"If the truth be known" nghĩa là gì?

Do công việc thôi chớ cũng sợ độ cao lắm! Photo by Victor Garcia on Unsplash

"(If the) truth be known" nghĩa là phải thừa nhận rằng; thành thực mà nói; thực tế là.

Ví dụ
If the truth be known, I learned everything I needed to know for survival in the corporate world of journalism by working at Sears.

The meal. And we agreed the benefits of healthy nutrition cannot be taken lightly. It is important. But, really, if the truth be known, I think if the dinner party had been all about pizza and beer or hamburger goulash it wouldn’t have mattered one bit because of the road trip.

The popular way to tackle the Limestone Way is to set off (bắt đầu lên đường) from Castleton, probably due to the range of places to stay overnight, the bus links there and the stunning (tuyệt vời) scenery from the outset. But if the truth be known, the southern reaches of the Limestone Way are less inspiring than the north, particularly the low-level last few miles after crossing the border into Staffordshire.

"Report in sick" nghĩa là báo ốm với cơ quan.

Ví dụ
Also, several workplace studies have shown that remote employees tend to take less time off, report in sick less frequently, and are more productive.

“We have had a number of staff report in sick because of respiratory illness (bệnh về hô hấp), and that’s not surprising because there is an awful lot of different viruses that can cause these chest infections.”

Most managers disapprove of employees texting them in contexts that fall outside of casual communication. For example, only a third of the managers Vejby interviewed found it acceptable for staff to report in sick by text. “The vast majority of managers felt disappointed if they received a text instead of a call, especially if they hadn’t talked with the employee in advance about appropriate ways to report in sick,” Vejby notes.

"Automated decision support" = (phần mềm) hỗ trợ việc ra quyết định tự động.

Ví dụ
Aided by the automated decision support of virtual shopping assistants, consumers will increasingly spend time on high-involvement shopping as well as getting help to automatically restock everything else.

Blood Glucose Predictions and Automated Decision Support will launch for people with type 2 diabetes who are not on insulin within 90 days. For insulin users, these features are expected to launch soon thereafter.

In the pediatric intensive care unit (khoa nhi hồi sức cấp cứu), without this automated decision support the rate of blood testing for AKI among high-risk patients was 60.5 percent, and with the automated decision support the rate was 69 percent. In other departments in Children’s Hospital, where rates of AKI are much lower, the automated decision support had no effect.

"Landmark decision" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Austrian National Library on Unsplash

"Landmark decision" có từ landmark nghĩa là bước ngoặt -> cụm từ này nghĩa là sự giải quyết pháp lý mang tính tiền lệ cho các trường hợp tương tự sau này.

Ví dụ
Fourteen years after Colombia's landmark decision to legalize (hợp pháp hóa) abortions (trình trạng nạo phá thai) in some cases, the country is once more bracing itself for a historic vote.

The judgment, seen as a landmark decision for the Indian military, means that all women will now be eligible for the same promotions, ranks, benefits and pensions as their male counterparts, irrespective of (bất kể) their years of service or whether they had retired.

The UK’s move to give Huawei a limited role in building its 5G network was a landmark decision and one that continues to divide MPs and the British public. But could it be a decision Boris Johnson and the country will come to regret? Can our security be guaranteed by only letting Huawei build the UK’s periphery 5G network?

"Cry bloody murder" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Ba Phi on Pexels

"Cry bloody murder" = kêu gào có án mạng, máu me -> nghĩa là gào thét, than vãn như thể gặp phải điều gì rất đáng sợ, ghê gớm; ('bớ người ta, giết người')

Ví dụ
Pain is a funny thing. Some patients cry bloody murder and yet the needle (kim tiêm) hasn’t even touched their skin. Others will be so oblivious (mù tịt) to the procedure (quy trình) that at the end, they will ask me, when are you going to start?

However, before you all start to cry bloody murder and try to siege (vây hãm) the Warner Bros. Pictures offices, it could be her last time playing Diana in a Wonder Woman solo movie.

So, nine games in, when the Washington Nationals were treading water, barely over .500 with a 5-4 record, all of the losses coming against either the Phillies or Marlins, was it really that surprising when Nats fans began to cry bloody murder, suggesting anarchy (hỗn loạn) to overthrow (lật đổ) the current bullpen?

"Better safe than sorry" nghĩa là gì?

Chậm mà chắc. Photo by: Taylor Smith on Unsplash

"Better safe than sorry" = thà an toàn hơn là nuối tiếc -> nghĩa là nên dành nhiều thời gian để cẩn trọng với hành vi của mình để sau này không phải hối tiếc vì bất cẩn, giống 'cẩn tắc vô ưu' hay 'cẩn thận vẫn hơn' đó các bạn.

Ví dụ
Though James Bond fans are probably disappointed (thất vọng) to hear this news about No Time To Die, it seems like a good call. Better safe than sorry is always a good rule of thumb, especially when something as dangerous as coronavirus is involved.

So, taking a “better safe than sorry” approach is probably best for overly cautious (cẩn thận quá mức) consumers. But Halden acknowledged that it might mean throwing away food that’s perfectly safe to eat. One of the best ways to combat this is to only purchase an amount of food your household can realistically consume. And food preservation methods like freezing can safely extend the shelf life of many foods.

Just the simple wear and tear over time. Especially those concussions. They can take a toll (thiệt hại) on you in the long haul. It's just better safe than sorry. But if it wasn't for that throughout the course of time, then I probably would have played for the next five years, at least. But I feel like I made a great decision as I move forward.

"Put it on the line" nghĩa là gì?

"Put it on the line" = Nói thẳng/trực tiếp.

Ví dụ
“Signing with them, they know what’s up. They know I’m going to come in, I’m going to put it on the line, like I always do. I’m going to come in and [be] well prepared, and that’s what they’re looking for. They’re looking for guys that come in and, and get after it, and can be marketable and eventually win that title.”

A budget defeat or passage of the Liberal motion would trigger the fall of the government and an immediate provincial election — something Higgs said again he is ready for."I'm prepared to put it on the line," he said. Asked Thursday if the controversy put the survival of the government in jeopardy, Health Minister Ted Flemming replied, "it's called democracy."

This life is not for those who need to be liked or popular. The best of my profession know that we have to be willing to put it on the line—and know that we will often pay a price (in some cases, our lives, and more often, our livelihoods) for doing so. We know that we will be targets of criticism and blame especially when we are wrong, but also, even when we are not.

"Put it about" nghĩa là gì?

"Put it/yourself about" = Quay đầu lại, đi ngược hướng lại; phân tán/chia sẻ tin đồn/thông tin chưa xác thực cho nhiều nơi hoặc nhiều người; ngủ/quan hệ với nhiều người khác nhau.

Ví dụ
“We had heard a couple of things about what they were like, in terms of how they played and some of the stuff that went on afterwards as well. They probably thought if they put it about, we would back down. Well they were certainly barking up the wrong tree with us lot!

“The thing that angers me is that, if I was a man, it [the bad image] would have all ended years ago. If I was Lenny Henry or Angus Deayton or any of the others, but it’s only ever me. I’m not like this slapper, I haven’t put it about. I was engaged twice. I was a relationship girl.”

They’re important, though, because those vehicles are what Rankin County will use to go out and rescue people in the flooding. There are also boats that are being held at different places around the county. Both of those are integral at a time like this because even though they say "put it about don’t drown all the time,” there are still people who try to do make it across flooded roads.

"Put (an act) in force" = thi hành một đạo luật

Ví dụ
A flood warning was put in force by the Environment Agency on both Monday, January 13 and Tuesday, January 14. But, in an update on Wednesday, January 15, it was confirmed that the risk of flooding has lessened.

In the eastern province of Zhejiang, the government has put in force a set of regulations on centralized funeral arrangements, which bans priests from attending funeral prayers (cầu nguyện cho đám tang) outside a religious place, reported

Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng visited the Conde Sao Januário Hospital, the Health Center in Hac Sa Van and the border of the bridge Hong Kong-Zhuhai -Macau today to inspect the situation and the measures that have been put in force by the Macau government.

"Put in a good word (for one)" = Nói những lời có cánh, khen ngợi ai/cái gì; ủng hộ ai/cái gì; giới thiệu ai/cái gì với ai.

Ví dụ
Apologies for informal text. I've left a voicemail for some of you today but also wanted to reach out here and put in a good word for Jeff Freeland.

He added he hopes his experience gives him a shot at a job with Berryville Graphics, and that his bindery (hiệu đóng sách) manager will put in a good word for him. Shipe said he is doing OK financially, but added that if the closing had happened a year ago that might have been different.

Fusil Raffles has also had a downbeat (chán chường, u sầu) season but Henderson hopes he can persuade racing’s rulers to restage the Kingwell Hurdle, lost with Wincanton’s card last weekend, at Kempton on Saturday, which would allow him to have a trial race. The trainer put in a good word for each of his Champion contenders but Sir Anthony McCoy, prowling the Lambourn yard unseen by most reporters, said: “There’s only one horse in that race,” a reference to Epatante, who carries the colours of his longstanding employer, JP McManus.

"Put 'em up" = Giơ tay lên (câu ra lệnh của các tên cướp cầm súng nói với các nạn nhân, 'Em là từ thông tục dạng rút gọn của "Them").

Ví dụ
Put 'em up!” an officer said as he approached the car. “Get on the ground, now!” Alamogordo police say they were on an unrelated call earlier.

But is the string really dead? Shake the string, and the lights come back! So you put ’em up and watch them die again the first time the wind comes up.

“The other day, after 10 years of being with my wife, I was like, ‘I’m finally gonna do a photo wall,’ ” continued the Jack Ryan actor. “So I got all these brand-new frames and I unwrapped them and I put ’em on the ground — you put ’em on the ground before you put ’em up where they’re gonna be on the wall — and the girls came over and they’re like, ‘Wow, you’re doing such a great job, Daddy.’ “

"Put backbone into" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (one's) backbone into" = Đặt xương sống/nghị lực vào việc gì -> Gắng hết sức để làm việc gì.

Ví dụ
A new book on Prime Ministers by Andrew Gimson describes how Sir Alec Douglas-Home was rejected by the Army in 1940 due to a spinal condition which required grafting bone from his shin (cẳng chân) on to his vertebrae (cột sống). He later joked that surgeons had ‘achieved the impossible – and put backbone into a politician’.

You may also spot Trevor Wright, the man behind William Creek and Wrightsair, the small scenic flight business that flies visitors to Lake Eyre. You can tell that he has put his backbone into this little place over the last 30 years, gradually taking over all facets of the town like a real-life game of Monopoly. But unlike Mr Pennybags, Trevor is as hardworking as they come.

Although not avowedly socialist in outlook, the leadership of the strike was by no means unaware of the political significance of what they were doing. At the Limerick May Day in 1918 one speaker, RP O’Connor, claimed to applause that he supposed they would be called Bolsheviks because they extended greetings to the Russian workers, but Irishmen could claim that as a small nation they had put backbone into any part of the world they were in.

"Put the plug in the jug" nghĩa là gì?

"Put a/the plug in the jug" = Đậy nút bình lại -> Vĩnh viễn không say rượu nữa, từ bỏ các nước uống có cồn nhất là rượu.

Ví dụ
Shelton's booze (say sưa) consumption is a significant part of his persona, but the source says he was happy to put the plug in the jug for good.

In my history of discussions with recovering people, many of them have had experiences like yours. Some have hit bottom, walked in the doors and permanently (mãi mãi, vĩnh viển) put the plug in the jug, but my guess is it’s at least 50-50.

According to Halacha (Jewish law), grape juice suffices in practically every situation where wine is required. So give yourself permission, or get permission from your rabbi, to “put the plug in the jug” and have grape juice at kiddush (Lưới chắn ở sông), the Seder, and wherever else alcohol is served. By the way, the obligation in Halacha is not to drink wine – it’s to hear kiddush spoken. So if you are at a Shabbat table and you don’t feel comfortable asking for grape juice, you don’t have to drink wine to have fulfilled your kiddush obligation.

"Put the wind up" nghĩa là gì?

"Put the wind up (one)" = Thổi bay/xoay ai như chong chóng -> (thông tục) làm cho ai hoảng sợ, lo lắng và khổ sở.

Ví dụ
"Everything will be told in the next month or so if we can put the wind up those who are currently in the top four as teams will look over their shoulder and think 'oh god, Arsenal have won three or four games on the bounce'.

The coronavirus scare has put the wind up a number of sectors including airports, oil stocks and airlines while there is so much uncertainty and the effects could linger (kéo dài, chậm trễ) given it has disrupted the Chinese New Year celebrations across many Asian countries.

But Cox used his final day in the job to put the wind up human rights lawyers. Speaking at the Institute for Government think tank yesterday, Cox complained about the “judicialisation of politics”, arguing that “there are a group of cases where you could argue that the courts have gone into areas that more legitimately would be decided by elected representatives”.

"Put the touch on" nghĩa là gì?

"Put the touch on" = Tác động, đả động tới ai -> Yêu cầu/gây sức ép cho ai để mượn tiền hoặc bắt đóng góp một khoản tiền cho mình.

Ví dụ
Soon enough Dr. Layoff reached his long, cold finger into Bechtel’s public relations department and put the touch on Junker, a fortysomething (những người có độ tuổi từ 40-49) technical writer. His response then would be woefully familiar today in this, another epoch (kỷ nguyên, thời đại) of job cuts.

Mrs. Schlader — Harriet to her friends (and they are legion (đám đông, nhiều vô số kể)) — will be asking for a million dollars. Don’t worry, she won’t put the touch on you — she just wants you to attend the summer musicals she and her family produce at Woodminster Amphitheater in Oakland’s Joaquin Miller Park. Buy a soda and popcorn, too, if you’re so moved, and maybe a few tickets for the drawing at intermission.

And to be sure, film school education gets gooned (ngu đần) on here as well, given the Jerome roomie who has aggressively put the touch on his innocent grandfather to bankroll (cung cấp vốn cho) his unwatchable slasher movie. If you take note of the “acknowledgement” credits at the end of the Illeana Douglas character’s own student film that we see in Ghost World, you’ll see that she hit her parents up for funding herself. This is one of the universals that pretty well offer proof that Zwigoff and Clowes know exactly what they’re doing.

"Put the tin lid on" nghĩa là gì?

"Put the tin lid on" = Đậy nắp thiếc lên -> Chấm dứt/giải quyết chuyện rắc rối hoặc tình huống tồi tệ theo cách tiêu cực nên kéo thêm sự khó khăn (đổ thêm dầu vào lửa).

Ví dụ
May almost put the tin lid on affairs in the last minute with a remarkable 45 yarder which was parried by the back-pedalling Hearts keeper. There was still time for a final twist and Clare pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box and drilled home to rescue a precious point.

Then, two weeks ago, the astonishing proposals for the ‘divvy up’ of convergence (hội tụ) funding put the tin lid on it. To make matters worse, having caused the controversy (sự tranh luận, bàn cãi) with ill-thought out convergence spending proposals, their hapless attempts to defend themselves have pissed off everyone.

Crashing defeat for Corbyn was on the cards already, of course, but this level of ignorance put the tin lid on it, as we say in South Yorkshire. Even if ‘The Queen’, as my grandma used to call the annual televised address, isn’t on your own Christmas Day schedule, you’d expect the leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition to know what time she spoke. This highlights the nature of modern British patriotism (chủ nghĩa yêu nước, lòng yêu nước). It’s there in the background, whirring away, influencing us far more than we might think.

"Put the skids under" nghĩa là gì?

"Put the skids (sự trượt, xuống dốc) under" = làm cho ai/cái gì bị thất bại.

Ví dụ
Nottinghamshire Police teamed up with three neighbouring forces during a cross-border operation aiming to put the skids under the illegal and anti-social use of off-road motorbikes and quad bikes.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) encourages whistleblowers (nhân viên kiểm soát) to speak out within the Justice Dept., "If you’re seeing things that are really wrong, you can do what a lot of whistleblowers did at the EPA that put the skids under Scott Pruitt.”

Their partnership put the skids under Pakistan and threatened to take Lanka home from a hopeless situation. Jayasuriya fell four runs short of a century, but got a pat on the back from Shanaka, the skipper for the T20I series. Having already shelled the chance of winning the series, the visitors will be looking to at least draw level when the teams lock horns in the third ODI in the national capital.

"Put the screws on" nghĩa là gì?

"Put the screws (ốc vít, tiền công) on" = Gây áp lực/đe dọa ai làm việc gì.

Ví dụ
“Listen to me. If you speak up, they'll put the screws on you and nothing will change… except you'll become a rat. And you'll never live it down.”.

“Bectu members working there will be extremely concerned to hear the PM threaten to ‘put the screws on the BBC’ - as should the general public be if they appreciate the value of a public service broadcaster free from political interference (sự can thiệp, trở ngại).”

But alas, New Yorkers are dealing with the Grinch that is trying to steal Christmas discounts. Bureaucrats want $7 million from B&H, and once the company pays, the stage is set for more lawsuits targeting all sorts of companies catering to consumers. Because once one business is forced to pay taxes on its countless rebates offered to consumers, the floodgates (cống tháo nước) will open for the Department of Taxation and Finance to put the screws on other businesses throughout the state.

"Put the roses back in (one's) cheeks" = Lấy lại/mang lại đôi má hồng -> Làm cho ai có sức sống/tươi khỏe và hồng hào hơn; hồi phục lại sức khỏe tốt.

Ví dụ
Talk about a 180-degree change for the better. She puts the roses back in her cheeks, more mature, and more comfortable with who she is. And you know what?

"There's so much more the body can endure and go through. Training in martial arts (học võ) is not only going to put the roses back in her cheeks but live longer.".

Norwegian Eilinn Seim, who now lives in Nice, France, spent hours in the gym every day following her mother's health scare as she believed it would put the roses back in her cheeks .

"Snap decision" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Nicola König on Unsplash

"Snap decision" có từ snap nghĩa là đột xuất -> cụm từ này nghĩa là một quyết định được đưa ra vội vàng, liều lĩnh, không có sự cân nhắc cẩn thận.

Ví dụ
When making a snap decision, most of it is based on experience and gut (quyết tâm) feeling. There is some sound judgment in there, but you’re sometimes making judgments in a matter of seconds. It’s not easy being that person.

Atlanta department rules require a minimum of two personnel to enter a structure in such situations. With no help immediately available, Capt. Dwyer made a snap decision. He broke down the door and dragged the victim out of the inferno (nơi rùng rợn).

Putting the properties up for redevelopment was not a snap decision for the city. The Garfield Lot has been designated for redevelopment for more than a decade, said city spokeswoman Sarah McKenzie.

"Reach/Arrive at a decision" có từ decision là sự quyết định -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đi tới một quyết định.

Ví dụ
Check for all the tell-tale signs of wiring damage and also look for several others factors to make a decision. Remember that hiring a licensed (có bằng cấp) electrician to inspect the property is the easiest and quickest way to arrive at a decision.

Before MGM Resorts can receive the go-ahead, however, it would have to stand scrutiny (sự kiểm tra kỹ lưỡng) by the Business Selection Committee set-up to specifically examine the validity of IR applicants’ bids. The Committee should arrive at a decision by July 2020 paving the way for an IR in Osaka.

The group, which intends to deepen cuts by additional 600,000 bpd until the second quarter, is waiting for a response from Moscow. The latter requested more time to access the impact of the virus and arrive at a decision. President Vladimir Putin will decide whether to support deeper cuts in a “timely manner”, his spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Thursday.

"Put the mouth on" nghĩa là gì?

Trẻ trâu...Photo by  Muhamad kamaran

"Put the mouth on (someone or something)" = Nói xấu ai/cái gì; nói những điều không tốt về ai/cái gì; tán dương việc gây ra cho công việc của ai trở nên xấu đi.

Ví dụ
After you leave your current job, don’t put the mouth on your former co-workers or company. Industries are small, word gets around, and no one wants an employee who is disrespectful of the past.

Ibrahimovic is not the first big-name player to put the mouth on France recently. Bayern Munich's France winger Franck Ribery told Germany's Bild-Zeitung last month he could consider taking German citizenship and staying in Germany after his playing career.

And I hate to bring it up and put the mouth on myself, but I seem to not fall off of all motorcycles as much as I did before that experience. All that sliding and skidding around on the verge of disaster without quite falling off (most of the time) just does something to recalibrate your internal 6-axis IMU. This KLX is a more sophisticated, more powerful version of my old TT-R in every way, and no doubt just as robust. Change the oil now and then, add gas and go.

"Put the mockers on" nghĩa là gì?

Bóng ai doesn't phai. Photo by  Jorik Kleen

"Put the mockers on (something)" = Nhạo báng cái gì -> Phá hoại, làm gián đoạn hoặc gây ra vấn đề cho kế hoạch/hoạt động/dự án của ai; mang sự xui xẻo đến cái gì.

Ví dụ
In the third T20I as well, it was New Zealand's game to win after they put the mockers on the Indian batting post the 89-run opening partnership.

Pompeo went on to mumble something about how when he had previously said that a UK deal with Huawei would put the mockers on any trade agreement with the US he had only been joshing (bỡn cợt, trêu chọc). Hey, if you couldn’t have some bantz with your friends, who could you have it with? I mean, sometimes things got a bit out of hand and people slept with each others’ partners, but nothing that couldn’t be resolved over a cold beer and a trade war. Or a military one, come to that.

Here’s hoping Storm Dennis doesn’t strike and put the mockers on us all. The whole country’s been battered and it was no different down in Gloucestershire. At least we know the drains on the gallops (phi nước đại, tiến triển nhanh) are working well! We know Riders Onthe Storm has been working well, too, and it would be nice to think he could blow away the other three today. But joking apart, that’s obviously not going to be a breeze with Cyrname in the field, because we know how good he is – especially at Ascot.

Đậy nắp lên, không là bay hết mùi thơm. Photo by Taylor Grote

"Put the lid on" = Đậy nắp lên cái gì -> (từ lóng) là đỉnh cao của, là cực điểm của; gây ra sự thất bại của cái gì, ngăn cản sự gia tăng/phát triển của cái gì.

Ví dụ
But when HR comes in to confine talent to boxes, to fit imagination into checklists, and to put the lid on enthusiasm, it all bursts into a violent clash of values: one that’s at the core of why companies rooted in tradition are struggling.

By retaining the same Cabinet as in 2015, the Chief Minister has signalled continuity and also put the lid on the ambitions of new contenders (đối thủ). Many analyses after the current Assembly election suggest that women workers turned out in large numbers and it remains to be seen what role Mr. Kejriwal gives to the women elected as MLAs on AAP ticket.

Boundaries (ranh giới) and limits are difficult to enforce today. Instead of trying to put the lid on your imagination, leave it off. Immersing yourself in artwork from another culture will trigger a wonderful idea. This inspiration can lead you down some exciting roads now, but be careful of getting too carried away. Before starting work on a complicated project, make a list of supplies. Having everything you need within arm’s reach will make your creative momentum flow like a mighty river. If you’re unsure how to achieve a certain effect, ask an experienced artist for help.
