"No half measures" nghĩa là gì?

Sẽ không có sự nhượng bộ! Photo by Binyamin Mellish from Pexels

"No half measures" = không giới hạn nửa chừng-> làm hết sức, chơi hết mình. "Half-measure" còn có nghĩa là biện pháp quyền nghi, biện pháp thỏa hiệp.

Ví dụ
I know from speaking to Chris Louis, Crump is already investing (đầu tư) and hunting down the very best equipment (trang thiết bị). There will be no half measures.

There is no half-measure in socialism (chủ nghĩa xã hội) because there can be no half-measures. People can’t opt out of socialist healthcare or socialist wealth redistribution (phân chia).

The fact that they have gone on to claim top spot (vị trí hàng đầu) bears out the club's decision, but could you imagine the fall-out if they had not? On field or off it, Goa don't ever seem to do half measures.

Similarly, there were no half measures when it came to their music. The Surfers took elements of punk, metal, psychedelia (ảo giác) and experimental noise to create a misfit (không phù hợp) rock governed only by chaos and fortuity (hỗn loạn và ngẫu nhiên).

He portrayed China’s leader (nhà lãnh đạo), Xi Jinping, as hungry for power (đói khát quyền lực, 'tham quyền cố vị'). He accused Mr. Xi of trying to cover up the coronavirus outbreak in central China. In one of his most daring writings, he urged Mr. Xi to resign, saying, “You’re just not smart enough.”

Then, over the weekend, Xu Zhiyong, a prominent (xuất chúng, nổi bật) Chinese legal activist (nhà hoạt động), went silent. The authorities in the southern city of Guangzhou detained (bắt giữ, bỏ tù) him on Saturday,

The activist is the latest critic to be caught up in Mr. Xi’s far-reaching efforts to limit dissent (bất đồng quan điểm, bất đồng ý kiến) in China. The crackdown (đàn áp), which has ensnared scores of activists, lawyers, journalists and intellectuals, is likely to intensify as the ruling Communist Party comes under broad attack for its handling of the coronavirus outbreak (đợt bùng phát), one of its biggest political challenges (thách thức chính trị) in years.

"Half-pint" nghĩa là gì?

"Half-pint" = một nửa (ly, cốc, "pint" là đơn vị đo lường chất lỏng), một xíu hoặc người yếu kém, bé nhỏ.

Ví dụ
I was honored (vinh dự) but somewhat bewildered (bối rối) by the title as a "half-pint" bespeaks a small amount.

Beers: We will be pouring a selection of eight cask-conditioned beers (vại bia) on the day, available at full or half pint pours.

He asked he clerk (người bán hàng) for a half-pint of Skol vodka from behind the counter, according to a Peoria County Sheriff's Office report.

A half pint of milk is provided to children of the Lincoln school at the morning recess, according to a plan worked out by the Parent Teachers Association of the school, collaborating (hợp tác) with Miss Ella May Harmon, home demonstration agent.

"Half-blind" nghĩa là gì?

Tôi làm được, bạn cũng làm được! Photo by Wallace Chuck from Pexels

"Half-blind" = mù dở -> bị mù 1 bên mắt, thị lực rất kém. Nghĩa khác là say sỉn.

Ví dụ
The dog, which was deaf and half-blind, was taken to a veterinary (thú y) office in Pico Rivera, rather than a shelter. The staff determined she was unhealthy and put her down.

Very few of the people where I worked or lived ever guessed I was half blind! I knew that some day I absolutely had to get the finest education possible in these United States.

Fury received an 11 year jail sentence (án tù) in 2011 when he was found guilty (phạm tội) of leaving Oathie Sykes, 44, half-blind after a brawl (cãi lộn) at a car auction (bán đấu giá).

In this traumatic (đau thương) time professional basketball player Eddie Shannon who played for my home towns team at the time came to visit me and my family. Eddie was half-blind too. Years later I understood the meaning of his visit and the words he had to say. ”Don’t let yourself be defined by this”, ”If I could do it so can you”…

-----
The coronavirus has the whole world on edge (bực mình, dễ cáu), but in China, where the epidemic (bệnh dịch) originated, people are taking every precaution (cẩn trọng, cẩn tắc) to avoid catching the virus, even at the risk of looking ridiculous (buồn cười, lố bịch).

A Chinese woman identified only as Ms. He went viral recently after being video-recorded while visiting a hospital in Luzhou, China’s south-western Sichuan Province, in a rather unusual getup – a giant inflatable giraffe costume

...Asked why she donned (mặc, khoác) the party costume (trang phục tiệc tùng) Ms He said that as the strongest member of her family, it fell to her to visit the hospital where her father usually treated his respiratory (hô hấp) problems before the coronavirus epidemic and ask his doctor to perform a virtual checkup, through a webcam. She did put on an expired (hết hạn) medical mask (khẩu trang y tế) she had lying around the house, but fearing it wasn’t enough to protect her, she decided to put on the plastic giraffe costume as well.

"Half-hearted about" nghĩa là gì?

Tình yêu không thể nói dối, vì vậy hãy yêu bằng cả trái tim. Photo by Andre Furtado from Pexels

"Half-hearted (about someone or something)" = nửa trái tim -> không cố gắng, nỗ lực hết sức mình để làm gì/ quan tâm hời hợt, thiếu năng lượng.

Ví dụ
Let's be very clear about one thing: Michael Bloomberg's half-hearted apologies about stop-and-frisk (Luật Chặn và Sờ - kiểm tra đột xuất) are a bunch of bullshit (nhảm nhí).

Oil and gas companies have frequently been pilloried (bêu rếu) for trying to burnish (đánh bóng) their green credentials (khả năng, phẩm chất) with half-hearted attempts at clean energy (năng lượng sạch) investments.

Half-hearted love is not true love. Certainly not. Love and half-heartedness have nothing to do with each other. Half-hearted love is an adulteration (giả tạo), a caricature (châm biếm), a desecration (xúc phạm) of true love.

During the third T20I of the ongoing India’s tour of New Zealand in Hamilton, India fast bowler (trong môn cricket) Jasprit Bumrah expressed displeasure (bất mãn) with fellow fast bowler Mohammed Shami after the latter put on display a half-hearted fielding effort at third-man.

"Half-baked" nghĩa là gì?

Nói gì mà nghe ngớ ngẩn vậy nhỉ? Photo by Charles from Pexels

"Half-baked" = nướng chưa chín hẳn -> chưa chín chắn, còn non nớt, khờ dại. Nghĩa khác là say rượu.

Ví dụ
Yet the countless loose threads and half-baked ideas only frustrate (thất vọng), with sounds and melodies contradicting (mâu thuẫn) each other at every turn.

Reem Shaikh is cast as Malala, and she never really manages to emerge beyond the half-baked role she is given to play out, in a screenplay that reveals no attempt to look at the pervading (xâm nhập) Taliban situation from the eyes of its protagonist (nhân vật chính).

I know everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. But let’s be honest. Sometimes a lot of those opinions can be downright crazy. And when it comes to Social Security (An ninh Xã hội), lots of people share their half-baked or out-and-out nutty (quái gở) ideas with me. Today, I’m going to share some of them with you...

"Half-naked" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Julia Kuzenkov from Pexels

"Half-naked" = bán khỏa thân. Đôi khi dùng để trêu ai mặc đồ thiếu vải.

Ví dụ
18-year-old American model Kaia Gerber, daughter of legendary supermodel Cindy Crawford, pleased his fans with a half-naked selfie, shared on his page in Instagram.

Rockets’ Russell Westbrook via twitter shared a poster of GQMagazine (March edition), where he is posing half-naked alongside his teammate (đồng đội) James Harden, who is dressed in a jacket.

A 31-year-old woman was arrested (bị bắt giữ) after police accused (cáo buộc) her of spitting (nhổ nước bọt) on an officer and twerking half-naked on top of a car parked outside of a North Austin grocery store (cửa hàng tạp hóa) Tuesday.

Stephanie and Stephen Bonner believe she was with their son Rhys on the night he disappeared (biến mất) from the Barlanark area. Two weeks later his "half naked" body found on marsh ground (đầm lầy) between Easterhouse and Gartloch Village.

"Half-inch" nghĩa là gì?

"Miếng thịt này là của meow ta!" Photo by Janayara Machado on Unsplash

"Half-inch" có nghĩa là lấy cắp, ăn trộm. "Half-inch" phát âm gần giống với từ "pinch" (ăn cắp, ăn trộm) trong tiếng Anh.

Ví dụ
This art was turned over and a lot of paintings were half-inched.

Someone had half-inched it! He called the police but it was probably already out of the country by then, these boys work so fast.

She shudders (rùng mình) and presses her hand to her eyes. Wets a bit of bog paper (giấy vệ sinh) from the roll she half-inched from a pub a few weeks back, dabs at the Cut.

Jenna's face was as white as death, thanks to the powder and foundation (phấn nền và phấn phủ) she had half inched when Helen showed her the theatrical (phô trương, màu mè) shop on South Molton Street that they used for college supplies.

"Half a truth is often a whole lie" nghĩa là gì?

"Cô ta nói mình giàu, nhưng lại không nói mình là con chủ tịch." Photo by fauxels from Pexels

"Half a truth is often a great/whole lie" = một nửa sự thật thường là những lời nói dối -> không nói toàn bộ sự thật mà chỉ nói 1 phần sẽ dẫn đến hiểu lầm, không khác gì nói dối cả.

Ví dụ
“I only told the half-truth about my father,” she said, “and a half-truth is worse than a lie."

A half truth usually becomes a whole lie. You can work at play, but not play at work. Success is often just a little way beyond where we stop. Life is not so short but what there is time for courtesy.

He replied “This is the source of contamination (gây ô nhiễm) in West, and the fact that a one sided truth is a half truth and is a lie. This is what the Western media often describe other groups, that other people are small minded and are insignificant.

Duality, it seems, is a shackle (sự trói buộc) that binds (trói, buộc) sincerity (sự chân thành) within inhibition (sự kiềm chế), leaving one half veiled (che đạy) from a curious eye. A person is the half he shows, and a person lives the half he hides, and two half-truths appear to be one big lie.

"Put to good use" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (something) to good use" = Dùng cái gì một cách có ích lợi và mang lại kết quả quan trọng.

Ví dụ
Why do we need such a definition of biological aging? A good definition can grab the essential characteristics of an entity and put them to good use. Two examples illustrate this.

Nick Connolly, managing director at End Youth Homelessness said: “I’m so excited that Mortgage Sleep Out is returning in 2020 and promises to be even bigger and better. The 2018 event raised a phenomenal amount of money that was put to good use to help homeless young people across the country. Just imagine what we can achieve this year.”

“There are billions of people in call centres today,” he said in an interview. “If I can automate [repetitive] functions they can focus on higher-level work, and that’s what we wanted to do. Those trying to solve simple requests shouldn’t. It’s one example where AI can be put to good use. Help desk employees want to work and become programmers, they don’t want to do mundane (thế tục) tasks. They want to move up in their careers, and this can help give them the roadmap (lộ trình) to do it.”

"To put it another way" nghĩa là gì?

"To put it another way" = Khi mình đang nói chuyện với một người, người ta không hiểu điều mình đang nói thì sẽ dùng cụm từ này để nói lại cái điều mình vừa nói, thường là theo 1 cách đơn giản và dễ hiểu hơn (trình bày bằng cách khác).

Ví dụ
At which point, anyone who is up to speed with internet slang might possibly mutter “MRDA”, an abbreviation for Mandy Rice-Davies Applies. Or, to put it another way: “Well, he would say that, wouldn’t he?”

To put it another way, you don’t want to just accept what a publisher tells you. Even the best publisher can make mistakes, so you also want to understand what claims they’re making, what their sources are and whether those claims have been vetted by independent fact checkers.

But in the case of a mortgage (tiền thế chấp), putting extra money toward the principal may not be the best choice; it's certainly not for me. After all, I have already identified a double-digit collection of dividend stocks that I can buy and hold over the next 10 or 20 years that should consistently deliver better returns than I would get by just paying down my low-rate mortgage. To put it another way, I'm taking advantage of the mismatch between today's low-interest (lãi thấp) rate environment and the higher yields I can earn to grow my net wealth.

"Putt along" nghĩa là gì?

"Putt along" = Di chuyển dọc theo cái gì rất nhanh/đầy tốc độ và đặc biệt đi bằng xe hoặc động cơ nào đó.

Ví dụ
I parked my flivver (xe ô tô rẻ tiền, tàu bay cá nhân) under the light at the west end of the shed and spent the night staring out the exit until daylight allowed me to fire up and putt putt along westward to Pagosa Springs, where I gulped (ngụm) down a pot of black coffee at Al’s Café and shared tall tales with the early morning truckers.

The added benefit is totally silent, emission-free cruising for up to 30 nautical (thuộc biển, hàng hải) miles (55.5 km) at 5 knots (9.26 km/h), perfect for enjoying the beauty and tranquillity (sự yên bình, yên tĩnh) of life at sea there is nothing like it. With the diesel engines, the Greenline 45 Fly can reach the top speed of 30 knots (56 km/h), and it can also putt along at up to 6.5 knots (12 km/h) in electric mode.

The addition of a Sport mode to a small hybrid hatchback (xe ô tô đuôi cong) unleashes a whole different kind of car. You can putt-putt along and save fuel, but move that lever to the left and the power is surprising. You’ll see 60 mph in as (relatively) fast as 9.6 seconds (obviously you’re not going to have to brace your neck), according to Motor Week. This acceleration comes thanks to the combined 139 horsepower from the 1.6-liter four-cylinder and the 32-kilowatt motor.

"Put up or shut up" nghĩa là gì?

"Put up or shut up" = Tiếp tục đứng lên hoặc là im lặng -> Thực hiện hành động/đưa ra các bước để giải quyết vấn đề mình không thích nếu không thì hãy ngừng than phiền về nó.

Ví dụ
Jenkins once insisted that Brown "put up or shut up" with his planned redevelopment of the Mechanic Theater site. The large hole created by the demolition has impacted leasing downtown and business recruitment, he charged.

After winning or tying in Iowa and New Hampshire, Bernie Sanders is looking to Latinos to build a delegate lead that could make him difficult to catch after Super Tuesday. Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar are fighting to prove their embarrassing polling numbers with people of color don't reflect reality on the ground. And it's put-up-or-shut-up time for Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren, who need a strong showing to prove they still belong in the race.

Typically in life, slicing crypto evaluation comes from the place you least anticipate it. And again on Tuesday, William Shatner — the 88-year-old who performed Captain Kirk within the authentic Star Trek collection — weighed into the controversy on whether or not Craig Wright truly is Satoshi Nakamoto, the nameless creator of Bitcoin. Shatner tweeted: “Ask your self why would somebody declare to be Satoshi and supply zero proof? Both put up or shut up, proper?” All of this comes as Wright continues to be wrapped up in authorized proceedings introduced towards him by the property of his late enterprise associate Dave Kleiman.

"Put up a struggle" nghĩa là gì?

"Put up a struggle" = Chiến đấu/cạnh tranh/đương đầu với quyết tâm cao và đặc biệt khi mình đang ở thế yếu hoặc cơ hội chiến thắng rất thấp.

Ví dụ
“The thing that I wanted was a conversation,” she said. “I didn’t want [a divorce] so I put up a struggle, but [now] I think that I have to go in the direction that he wants.”

The fourth charge indicates Conley put up a struggle when Joliet Police Officer Juan Santiago was attempting to arrest him for the burglary offenses (tội ăn trộm).

After several verbal commands, Allen unlocked the door, but still refused to provide identification. Once in handcuffs, Allen was escorted (hộ tống) to Trooper Andrew Mattern’s patrol car where she continued to put up a struggle, breaking equipment within the patrol car, police said. Police said while Trooper Mattern was attempting to place a safety belt on Allen, she turned her head, biting Mattern on his left forearm.

"Put one foot in front of the other" nghĩa là gì?

"Put one foot in front of the other" = Đặt một bên chân ở trước chân kia -> Tiếp tục đi/tiến lên phía trước; làm việc gì rất cẩn thận và dè chừng.

Ví dụ
“I do know that it's become a part of me, and like my dear friend and inspiration Charlie Cinto says, ‘As long as I can put one foot in front of the other, I'll be fishing.’ "

At the top of a muddy slope that drops into a beautiful valley, I take a deep breath and prepare to put one foot in front of the other. Walking down this track, strewn with roots and ruts, wouldn’t normally be too challenging. But today I’m attempting to reach the bottom at a faster pace. The trouble is, I’m struggling with my fear of falling.

Anyone who has run a full marathon knows about “the wall,” also known as the point where runners feel like they can’t go any further. This happens when runners hit the 20-mile mark which for many is the most challenging part of the race––their bodies send signals like muscle cramps and fatigue as a cry for them to stop. However, determined runners continue to put one foot in front of the other. Similarly, a marathon project, by definition, is a project that has been running forever and without an end in sight. Marathon projects typically result in teams who are frustrated and left with the perception that it will be impossible to deliver their project before the deadline (that’s already been pushed back three times).

"Put in an appearance" nghĩa là gì?

"Put in an appearance" = có mặt, đến cho có mặt một lát (ở buổi lễ...); chỉ xuất hiện/đến tham gia một xíu thôi (chỉ vì lịch sự).

Ví dụ
Just think, you’ll find “wings and wheels of all kinds!” And if the library fairy can take time out from sprinkling magic dust on the library books, she may even put in an appearance.

Yet with the next royal wedding looming, with Princess Beatrice set to tie the knot with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on 29 May, speculation has abounded as to whether her grandfather will be present at the event. Now the Express has reported that his attendance will be contingent on the state of his health, but – all being well – he is expected to put in an appearance.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex may have stepped back from royal duty after choosing between personal freedom and living life under the royal spotlight. However, before the transition officially occurs in spring, it's likely that Prince Harry and Meghan will return to the UK next month to attend their final engagements as senior members of the royal family. It has been widely reported that the pair will put in an appearance at the annual Commonwealth Day service alongside the royal family at Westminster Abbey in London on 9 March.

"Put in a hard day at work" nghĩa là gì?

"Put in a hard day at work" = Một ngày làm việc mệt mỏi; một ngày làm việc siêng năng/cật lực.

Ví dụ
You’re not alone because grocery shopping ranks pretty low on the list for people who just put in a hard day at work and are looking to relax. But a growing segment of residents in the Los Angeles area now have an alternative.

“Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy goodnight and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. “He wrapped me in his arms and said, ‘Your Mom put in a hard day at work today and she’s real tired. And besides — a little burned biscuit never hurt anyone!'”

Larry McClemons of Annandale, Va., spotted this squirrel (con sóc) lounging in a gutter of his roof. Said Larry: “It’s like he didn’t really care: ‘I’m comfortable. I’ve put in a hard day at work. I’m just waiting for the beer to get cold.’” Not long after he snapped the photo, Larry realized the squirrel had moved into his attic. He called a service to humanely relocate the squirrel.

"Put in my tuppence worth" nghĩa là gì?

"Put in (one's) tuppence (worth)" = Chỉ đáng giá 2 xu -> Chia sẻ/nói ý kiến, quan điểm hoặc suy nghĩ của mình mặc kệ họ muốn nghe hay không.

Ví dụ
Ed Conway was bashing away for Sky, but where was BBC economics editor Stephanie Flanders, who failed to put in her tuppence worth?

Now that I’ve put in my tuppence worth, I can get down to the really important stuff— planning my Cleveland wardrobe! See you all at the Citizens for Trump rally this afternoon.

The world has woken up to the maldistribution (sự phân phối không công bằng (tài sản)) of land in South Africa nearly 30 years after the collapse of apartheid (nạn phân biệt chủng tộc ở Nam Phi), but not in a good way. Both Donald Trump and his occasional carer Theresa May have put in their tuppence worth over the declaration by the government, the ANC government, that several election mandates later something is to be done about the fact that most of South Africa continues to be owned by the same small section of the population who owned it before – white people. How did it come to this, and what exactly is the ANC’s plan? Our first guest knows. He is a research fellow at the London School of Economics, McDonald Lewanika, so, we invited him into the Sputnik studio to explain.

"Put aside your differences" nghĩa là gì?

"Put aside (one's) differences" = Gạt mọi sự khác biệt sang một bên -> xí xoá những chuyện cũ, bỏ qua những chuyện bất đồng, cùng nhau hợp lại vì mục đích chung.

Ví dụ
When you have people saying 'Joe Biden's not in my party' or 'I don't agree with Elizabeth Warren,' well you have to put aside your differences.

“Sometimes you need to look at the individual and put aside your differences and support people/ambassadors who have supported you. “James supported our Boost brand over many, many years to help us get it to what it is today. We have a history of loyalty and continue to see value in James as an ambassador.”

Should I have put aside my differences and focused on the matter at hand, i.e. that the Women’s March was designed to give voice to women who feel betrayed by Trump’s agenda, a goal which, in principle, I have no reason to censure? Maybe, but this was as much an anti-Trump march as it was a women’s rights march, and though I did not vote for Trump and consider him unworthy of the office, it’s not as if I disagree with everything he says or every policy he has proposed. For example, while I lament his extreme rhetoric and his diatribes against trade pacts like NAFTA and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, I applaud his emphasis on lowering corporate tax rates and reducing regulations.

"Put the whammy on" nghĩa là gì?

"Put the whammy on" = Câu này dùng để chửi/nguyền rủa ai đó, "whammy" là cách đánh vần của từ có nghĩa rất xấu xa để nói với kẻ thù/người mình rất ghét.

Ví dụ
“I don’t want to put the whammy on my team, but they work really hard,” Fisher said, moments after South (9-5, 5-4) gave the rest of the Central Carolina Conference a reason to worry. “It’s nothing that I do. It’s always what the boys do. When they put their mind, heart and soul out here, you get results like we got tonight.”

Every year I offer my fearless WAMC predictions. I do that with some trepidation (sự rung chuyển) because sometimes I have been wrong. But hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Here are the rules: I predict some of these things because I want them to happen. Some I predict in order to put the whammy on them so that they don’t happen and some I actually think will happen. It’s up to you to figure out which is which.

I’m happy to have Raf and Peyton Alex Smith back, but something is definitely up. I’m especially nervous thanks to that whole, “The wolf among you has many faces” thing from the prophecy (lời tiên tri, đoán trước). I think somebody (maybe the Necromancer? Maybe Raf’s father?) put the whammy on him before Legacies season 2, episode 13, and he just doesn’t remember it. Unless it was a hybrid or someone as powerful as an Original who can compel (buộc phải) werewolves (người sói). Is anyone with that amount of power still alive (besides Kol, of course, but I don’t think we’ll be seeing him anytime soon)?

"Put the squeeze (ép, vắt) on" = (thông tục) dùng sức ép đối với ai để hành động theo một cách cụ thể nào đó; tạo ra khó khăn/vấn đề cho ai.

Ví dụ

He tried to shake down the CEO of a children’s hospital, he attempted to sell a U.S. Senate seat, he put the squeeze on a racetrack, and he lied to the FBI. Three passengers that took the same cruise from China to Vietnam in January have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus, with a further two suspected of being infected, the South China Morning Post has learned. The fact is, WORLD DREAM didn’t call Ha Long Bay on that specific 5-day cruise during Jan 19 – Jan 25 period, but the news raised concerns and fears to such an extent, that the authorities had to react and put the record straight.
