"Power them with" nghĩa là gì?

Mẹ luôn được tiếp thêm năng lượng khi bên con! Photo by Irina Murza on Unsplash

"Power something with something else" có từ power là cấp nguồn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là sử dụng cái gì như nguồn năng lượng cho một cái khác hoạt động hoặc thực hiện chức năng.

Ví dụ
Potter believes that many of the buyers of Tesla’s solar panels and batteries will be owners of Tesla cars who want to power them with clean energy rather than with utility-generated electricity.

Enterprise IoT (Internet of Things) can be leveraged for business automation through the effective restructuring of sensors or nodes for smarter automated systems. Smart nodes can render data in adversarial conditions and reduce power consumption.

As the industry moves toward electricity and autonomy, one of the most compelling (hấp dẫn) business models for a wannabe self-driving car company is as follows: operate a fleet of vehicles in a city where there are lots of riders who can access the service using smartphones, run those vehicles day and night, 24/7, and power them with electricity.

"Lust for power" có từ lust là sự thèm khát, lòng tham -> cụm từ này nghĩa là khát khao mãnh liệt, tham lam muốn giành được quyền lực hoặc quyền kiểm soát; sự thèm khát quyền lực.

Ví dụ
Princess Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher, was one of the truly good people in a universe in which it's easier to join the dark side out of fear and a lust for power than to join the light side.

Upon splitting from the urSkeks to become the living embodiment of their dark and violent natures, the Skeksis set about amassing (tích lũy) as much power as they could over the world of Thra and it's inhabitants. That same lust for power quickly evolved into a desperate push for survival.

In a recent Twitter exchange, the tweeter summarized the issue with admirable (and rare) clarity: “a dollar is a unit of entitlement, an authorization to obtain resources, goods, and services.” In other words, the person with the dollar does not simply have something to use in exchange with others. Money is a means to command others to give up their goods, the ultimate expression of power. Money releases our savage lust for power and innate desire to cause harm to one another.

"Fall from power" = rớt khỏi (vị trí) quyền lực -> cụm từ này nghĩa là mất quyền lực hoặc quyền hạn trong một tình huống nào đó.

Ví dụ
President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday swore in Italy's new pro-European government, heralding (báo trước) a fresh start for the eurozone's third-largest economy as the right-wing falls from power.

Capping one of the most dramatic falls from power in Hollywood history, Harvey Weinstein was convicted Monday on one rape and one criminal sex act count, guilty verdicts that could put him in prison for up to 29 years.

After falling from power, Mubarak faced multiple charges and was convicted of conspiring (âm mưu) to kill protesters. However he was acquitted (được tha bổng) and freed in 2017, much to the revolutionaries’ disgust.

"Fish or cut bait" nghĩa là gì?

"Fish or cut bait" = Câu cá hoặc cắt mồi -> Một là phải cam kết làm việc hiệu quả, nếu không thì dẹp sang một bên và đừng làm tốn thêm thời gian nữa.

Ví dụ
How did this shift, drift, disregard come about ? We'd best pull up our notes from those numerous meetings, and get ready to 'fish or cut bait.'.

Our region deserves better than this and when it comes to a caribou recovery plan it’s time for Premier John Horgan and federal Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson to fish or cut bait.

It’s fish-or-cut-bait time. The city is looking for supporters of maintaining the Haiku Stairs, the controversial Koolau ridge-hiking attraction, to come up with concepts for how it could be repaired and managed.

"Cut-off point" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut-off point" = điểm giới hạn, điểm ngưỡng

Ví dụ
Before Smith's second birthday—the cut-off point to receive the new drug treatment—the toddler was unable to talk or even crawl around, being forced to scoot on the floor if she wanted to move.

Last week saw the ASX200 run parabolic on earnings exuberance (tính dồi dào, đầy dẫy) up to mid-session Thursday – the cut-off point for this table – before falling ill. It is important to note the data below, while ASIC’s most recent, pre-date the virus sell-off.

The only real difference between Declan’s situation and mine is timing. How can it be fair that some disabled people receive additional support, when others don’t? How can we justify an arbitrary (tùy ý, không bị bó buộc) cut-off point having such a significant impact on a person’s quality of life?

"Cut your peaches" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut your peaches" = Cứ tiếp tục việc bạn đang làm.

Ví dụ
Cut your peaches to keep fit. You will be able to successfully curb mounting domestic expenses by cutting corners.

There is no scale for productivity except the quality of your work. For a quick check, ask yourself the following questions and see if the answers satisfy you enough to cut your peaches, or if it is a waste of time.

Thankfully, you indicate that adultery (ngoại tình, thông dâm) and self-gratification (sự tự làm thoả mãn mong muốn) are not options; so those on the table are either to move to a life of celibacy (sự sống độc thân, không lập gia đình), more or less forcing your wife into the same, or to cut your peaches.

"Cut to the pith" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut to the pith (of something)" = Tập trung trực tiếp vào phần chính, phần cốt lõi, phần chủ yếu.

Ví dụ
With fine art you often have to wade through the arty speak to get to the pith of its concepts. Sometimes, this rhetoric acts as justification enough for things like appropriation and context. An artist from a prestigious (có uy tín) art school, with the right contacts, can combine whatever elements they please to produce 'accepted' art. I chatted to Bethany Hughes, Collections Curator at the Arts Council Collection about this paradigm (niệm giới, thế giới quan, sự biến hóa), and she had some interesting points.

The Aggies didn't choose their schedule this year, but this particular test suits their mentality. The established, the comfortable, the content: they don't pack their bags and leave home, looking for themselves. It's the young, the undefined, the restless and insecure that hit the road in search of identity, redemption (sự mua lại, chuộc tội, sự thực hiện), or both. In travel we strip ourselves of the superficial labels of home and past and cut to the pith of ourselves. Or, like that trip I took with my family back in the mid-Nineties, we simply find out what, exactly, we are not.

"Cut to ribbons" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut (someone) to ribbons" = Cắt thành từng mảnh dải ruy băng -> Chỉ trích/đánh giá/phê bình ai thật tệ.

Ví dụ
The message was different and it cut me to ribbons. The pastor that I was podcasting told me for the first time in my life that my heart mattered.

“On my 40th birthday, my friends were taking me on a bar crawl in Manhattan and we wound up at Julius Bar, which is in the movie,” he said. “I had these bunny ears on and went over to her and said, ‘Lee Israel,’ and she said, ‘Yes,’ very warily, and I said, ‘I’m Jeff Whitty and I wrote the screenplay of your life.’ She said, ‘I was looking at you with those bunny ears on and I told me friend that I couldn’t wait for you to leave.’ So she cut me to ribbons in one sentence and I’ve never laughed so hard. We got along really well.”

Where I failed in my tactics in that match was assuming my brawn could get me through the match but four much faster cruisers cut me to ribbons as they sailed circles around me while an enemy destroy shelled me from afar. Tactics (chiến thuật, kế sách) play a huge role in this game, something that took me some lumps to understand. It’s all fun and games when you’re defending a base as you and a couple of teammates are devastating everyone in sight but much different when you have to thread through the island terrain (địa hình, địa thế) to try to outflank (đánh vào sườn) an enemy. That’s usually when you find yourself in the crossfire of a group of ships and you’re very quickly on fire.

"Cut the comedy" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut the comedy" = Ngưng làm trò hề, đùa cợt, ngớ ngẩn hoặc dừng ngay mấy trò lừa bịp.

Ví dụ
If David Spade could cut the comedy and take on a serious role, he'd definitely be a contender. Our most serious choice for Duane would be Ryan Reynolds.

What to expect from the full moon effect: you’re often cast in the role of the class clown or chief entertainer, using wit, wisdom – or gossip – to keep your audience enthralled (mê hoặc, mê mệt) and to fulfil your hunger for attention. But this Leo full moon suggests that it may be time to cut the comedy and work on being taken more seriously. Going too far with humour or spilling too many secrets could backfire during this time of heightened emotions, so know when to speak up and when to hold back. Completing a presentation, exam or written project (perhaps a blog or your life story) that has a bit of star quality about it is also likely now.

Odekro’s report is inundated (tràn ngập) with a list of impeachable parliamentarians yet the laws are lax. Sometimes I lay the blame squarely on ourselves for not mounting series of nationwide demonstration against the yearly meaningless ex-gratia (việc trả bồi thường không có quy định trong hợp đồng) paid to members of parliament. Why wouldn’t they become Oliver twists? For crying out loud, the government has recently secured a loan facility to build Eastern Corridor road. If we were that rich, would we have borrowed for that capital intensive project, bearing in mind we would be paying interests? Parliamentarians are no longer funny. They should cut the comedy!

"Your point is well taken" nghĩa là gì?

"One's point is well taken" = ý kiến, quan điểm hay, dễ hiểu, hợp lý, có thể áp dụng.

Ví dụ
So I would disagree a little bit with your conclusion, but your point is well taken.

His point is well taken, but the strength of the Big Ten is skewing (nghiêng, lệch) things a bit in the computers.

So they get energized about creating value (tạo ra giá trị) and we're doing all the things we said we would do. But your point's well taken about do we simplify (đơn giản hóa) and do we focus on things and that's one of the things we're doing in the first half.

Fitzgerald’s point is well taken. While Evers campaigned (vận động) on increasing education funding (ngân sách giáo dục), he needs to work with Republicans (Đảng Cộng hòa) in the coming year on the best approach considering that they’ve increased education funding of late.

"Cut the apron strings" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut the apron strings" = Cắt dây tạp dề -> Không lệ thuộc vào ai (bố mẹ), sống độc lập, tự độc lập.

Ví dụ
Better yet, why not cut the apron strings to its American UFCW parent completely and become a real independent Canadian union like Unifor?

In chimp society females leave the nest, while males stay with their parents. But some chimp females seem less willing to cut the apron strings. New findings suggest that while the risks of inbreeding push some females to leave home and start their families elsewhere, the perks of having a powerful mom on hand can make it worthwhile for other females to stay.

So by all means, run along and play outside — but I’ll be staying in, reading brilliant books, surrounding myself with entertaining people and pursuing indoor games of varying wholesomeness (tính chất bổ ích, tính chất lành mạnh). You can cleave to Mother Nature all you like, but thank goodness I cut the apron strings decades ago. Because I’m wild enough to understand that this obsession with the wild is little more than the hysterical (quá kích động, cuồng loạn) reaction of misanthropes (kẻ ghét người) who would willingly wipe out everything that makes our modern world the wonder that it is.

Ví dụ
“Well bust my buttons,” said Louie. “The kid done it. It's a miracle, I'm telling ya'. What I jus' seen was a miracle.”

Well bust my buttons and holy-shit! There was indeed another Louis Potato in this world - and I have his address and photo! It's gotta be five o'clock somewhere!

I'll say the movie is Carolina Cannonball and the jackpot (giải độc đắc) is six hundred and fifty-one dollars. That's right? Well, bust my buttons. That was a right lucky guess.

"Well, bust my buttons," the caterpillar answered happily. "If it isn't our good friend Francis. What brings you into the Flea Market?"
"Why, to see you, Penelope." Francis grinned (cười toe toét).

"Cut your losses" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut your losses" = Không bỏ công sức, thời gian và tâm trí vào việc không có kết quả/dẫn đến thất bại; từ bỏ công việc đó trước khi nó trở nên xấu hơn hoặc mất mát thêm.

Ví dụ
Even if you have not spent your budget and are on a losing run, walking away for the day may be a good choice. Sure, you could win big on the next game but sometimes it is just better to cut your losses at the right time.

That’s precisely what you need to do. Admit that what you thought was right is not and cut your losses by changing strategy. The sunk cost effect implies that you need to accept the fact that the cost has already been incurred, cannot be recovered, and there’s nothing you can do to salvage (cứu hộ, cứu đắm) it by continuing down the same road.

If you have proven that your idea is dead, just let it go. Sometimes, you need to cut your losses and move on in order to preserve your most valuable asset — your time. Often entrepreneurs fail because they make the mistake (sometimes repeatedly) of becoming fixated (gắn bó, lưu luyến) on pursuing whatever they believe is a good idea without truly analyzing if that idea can make money.

"Be well turned out" = xuất hiện tốt, đẹp -> mặc đẹp. Ngược lại "be badly turned out" nghĩa là mặc xấu.

Ví dụ
'Seldom have I seen anything more slovenly (cẩu thả) and badly turned out.' John said.

Grethe was in her early thirties, a tall, smart girl who always made sure she was well turned out.

'Well, you certainly look it.'
'Thanks.' She returned his gaze. 'You look well turned out, too, but I expect you always dress like that for work, don't you?'

There was an open jeep full of policewomen in front of me. I admired how well turned out and relaxed they all seemed, in comparison to the policewomen I am used to seeing in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. I almost felt like I could have been on a large-scale (quy mô lớn) film set, surrounded by actors doing a dry run before they shoot the scene for real.

"Cut in line" = Nhảy vô ở giữa hàng hoặc giữa dòng người đang xếp hàng đợi, chứ không chịu đứng đợi ở cuối hàng như theo thứ tự.

Ví dụ
A man is facing intimidation (sự hăm dọa) charges after pulling an AK47 on a driver he thought cut in line at the McDonald's drive thru, according to court records. Justin Stewart has been charged with two counts of intimidation.

A ticket seller from China is going viral for scolding a woman who cut in line twice at a railway station. The video, which was posted on China’s social media platform Weibo, shows the ticket seller confronting the unruly passenger (hành khách ngỗ ngược, ương nghạnh) when she cut the line twice while buying her ticket, South China Morning Post reported.

Nebraska is full of hospitable people, but when you are in their house on a Saturday in the fall, they’ll talk to you, they’ll feed you, they’ll let you cut in line if you ask nicely, but that’s not to say they want you to settle in and get comfortable.

He snorted just a bit, looked at me the way a new father looks at his baby's first staggering experiments in walking, and cut eyes at his assistant.

Before I cut my eyes at city boys pretending not to see my pregnant belly by burying their head in a book called 'The Success' or something on the Central Line, there were a few challenges I had to complete. "Cut (someone) dead" = Hoàn toàn làm lơ/mặc kệ ai.

Ví dụ
She continued: “What worries me is some people don't know, and they think: 'Ooh, get her – she cut me dead!' when I didn't see them at all.”.

They behaved towards me with a warmth, a sincere interest which for many months deceived and flattered me so that I was at a loss to explain why they not only did not invite me to their own houses, ... [b]ut ... when I met them on the street, [they] likely as not ... cut me dead. It was the very lack of condescension (sự chiếu cố, kẻ cả, hạ mình), the tactful omission (sự bỏ quên, bỏ đi khéo xử) from their conversation of anything which might remind me, to my embarrassment, that I was not of the sisterhood that finally enraged (nổi giận) me.

At the same time, as his gambling debts and other financial problems multiplied, he was blaming his estranged wife for his predicament (tình thế khó khăn, tình huống khó chịu, tình trạng khó xử). "Cut and thrust" = (cuộc đánh giáp lá cà) chém và đâm (lưỡi lê) -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cuộc cạnh tranh/tranh luận hết sức sôi nổi và ác liệt, nhất là trong giới kinh doanh (thương trường như chiến trường).

Ví dụ
"It's a very different proposition having 800 trade steers as your entire herd than it is running a 500-head cow-calf operation with some trade steers on the side," said Mike Stephens, Meridian Agriculture. "If you are going to become a trader you have to enjoy the cut and thrust of the market.

“No I don't think so,” the Premier said. “I think people have views and there's the usual sort of cut and thrust of politics. “I’ve always found it’s best not to be distracted by those sort of things. “You get debate from time to time, but the thing that I'm focused on now ... is delivering on the trust that's been placed in us, delivering on the promises that we made and responding to other issues.”

Minis are best known for being fun to drive, for having the ability to cut and thrust, for being able to find holes in traffic that other cars can't, and for lively and quick steering. Despite being a size up on the "fun size" Minis, the Countryman and Clubman successfully translate a good amount of friskiness (tính nghịch ngợm; tính hay nô đùa) to a bigger footprint. Steering is direct and communicative in both vehicles. The lower-riding Clubman, which is essentially a stretched Cooper Hardtop, felt particularly sharp and eager to change directions at the slightest provocation (sự khiêu khích, trêu chọc). That liveliness can feel darty and jittery (dễ bị kích thích) at highway speeds, something commuters should note, but it's very much the driving enthusiast's choice here. The Countryman, which is on larger platform shared with the BMW X1 and X2, isn't as sensitive and relaxes more readily than the Clubman.

"Sword-and-sandal" = kiếm và dép -> (thể loại phim ảnh) kể về những câu chuyện ly kỳ, thần bí xung quanh các nhân vật cổ đại, thần thoại.

Ví dụ
Inspired by big-budget Hollywood biblical epics like “Spartacus,” “Samson and Delilah” and “The Ten Commandments,”the low-budget “sword and sandal” genre dominated (ảnh hưởng lớn) the Italian film industry in the late Fifties and early Sixties.

Director Neil Marshall’s ability to add insanity (điên rồ) and verve (nhiệt tình, hăng hái) to any genre has proven to be consistently addictive. After tackling werewolves (người sói) and the apocalypse (tận thế), it made sense for him to explore the sword-and-sandal genre.

When I was a young girl, I hated Aphrodite.
