"Stand well with" nghĩa là gì?

Hợp tác cùng tiến lên. Photo by Oleg Magni from Pexels

"Stand well with one" = đứng về phía ai, chấp nhận, đồng ý, đồng thuận điều gì đó với ai.
Ví dụ
They want to stand well with the business people with whom they work or the office where they work or the little group in their social circles.

He had no wish to stand well with ministers (bộ trưởng). He wished to stand well with the respectable part of mankind (nhân loại) in general, for he was not indifferent to the vox populi (tiếng nói của nhân dân).

In many other views too, it was of importance for us to stand well with France. We had claims to adjust with other powers, the favourable adjustment (điều chỉnh phù hợp) whereof depended much on her success.

I think that in the majority of cases it is unconscious (vô thức) and not calculated; that it is born of the human being's natural yearning (khao khát) to stand well with his fellows, and have their inspiring approval and praise—a yearning which is commonly so strong and so insistent that it cannot be effectually resisted (kháng cự), and must have its way.

"Flower children" nghĩa là gì?

"Flower children" nghĩa là nhóm thanh niên biểu lộ ý tưởng của mình bằng hoa.

Ví dụ
The Hippie Dash is a 5K fun run/walk that raises awareness and funding for people with disabilities (khuyết tật). Far out dudes, hip chicks, flower children and funky fidos are invited to don their best ’70s attire as they move and groove their way through a psychedelic (ở trạng thái lâng lâng) 3.1 mile course.

The hippy flower children in the 1960s and 70s protested and demonstrated their power softly and passively in the manner of their hero Gandhi (the Babuji of Indian Independence). The exhibition is also about that sort of resistance and power and at the same time about the Sufi poetry power of love - love being the subtext of all life and understanding.

During the summer of 1967, thousands of flower children streamed across America searching for peace. Many members of the LGBTQ+ communities saw the developments of that time as guiding the way to greater liberation, however, over 50 years later the community – both globally and here at home in the UK – must continue its fight for equal rights.

Không smartphone, cuộc sống liệu có hạnh phúc hơn?

sao lại thế được, điện thoại giờ như pacifier đấy...
In light of consumers’ growing dependence (ngày càng lệ thuộc) on their smartphones, this article investigates the nature of the relationship that consumers form with their smartphone and its underlying mechanisms (cơ chế ẩn bên dưới). We propose that in addition to obvious functional benefits (lợi ích chức năng hiển nhiên/rõ rành rành), consumers in fact derive emotional benefits (lợi ích tình cảm) from their smartphone, in particular, feelings of psychological comfort (an ủi tâm lý) and, if needed, actual stress relief (giải tỏa căng thẳng). In other words, in a sense, smartphones are not unlike “adult pacifiers.” This psychological comfort arises from a unique combination of properties that turn smartphones into a reassuring presence for their owners: the portability of the device, its personal nature, the subjective sense of privacy experienced while on the device, and the haptic gratification (hài lòng về xúc giác) it affords. Results from one large-scale field study and three laboratory experiments support the proposed underlying mechanisms and document downstream consequences of the psychological comfort that smartphones provide. The findings show, for example, that (a) in moments of stress, consumers exhibit a greater tendency to seek out their smartphone (study 2); and (b) engaging with one’s smartphone provides greater stress relief than engaging in the same activity with a comparable device such as one’s laptop (study 3) or a similar smartphone belonging to someone else (study 4).

What was undeniable (không thể phủ nhận) was his staying power. Fisher coached 270 games for the franchise, which also was known as the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Oilers during his tenure. That is nearly three times the number anyone else has been in charge.

"Flatter to deceive" nghĩa là gì?

Để em nói anh nghe lời tỏ tình dễ thương Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels

'Flatter to deceive' = (ai/thứ gì) dường như tốt hơn hoặc hứa hẹn hơn so với thực tế.

Ví dụ
The statistics actually suggested Keita played well, but watching the game with your own eyes, it was hard not to feel underwhelmed (không gây ấn tượng) by the Guinean’s impact, as he continues to flatter to deceive in a Liverpool shirt.

So far the impact on western economies appears to be limited, although purchasing managers’ indices published on Friday flatter to deceive. While figures for the Japanese and Australian economies pointed to a sharp slowdown, the data for Europe has been better.

Corruption (tham nhũng) will continue and President Akufo-Addo will only pretend (giả vờ) to fight it. The president may personally not involve himself in financial shenanigans (sự lừa dối, bê bối) (because he touts himself as ‘incorruptible’), but his appointees will. Seized excavators will continue to be whisked away (gạt đi, xóa bỏ) as if they are chaff (chế giễu, lừa gạt), yet the criminal masterminds will hold on to their position and go unpunished. President Akufo-Addo will continue to ‘flatter to deceive’ by ordering for the summary arrest of his appointees and party members who engage in corruption and later clear them.

"Thin edge of the wedge" nghĩa là gì?

Cẩn thận không ngã!! Photo by: Red Hat Factory on Unsplash

"Thin edge of the wedge" = cạnh sắc của cái nêm -> nghĩa là những thay đổi hoặc diễn biến nhỏ báo trước những điều không lành hoặc kết cục xấu.

Ví dụ
It’s on the thin edge of the wedge to even use the terminology (thuật ngữ) of this town being “predominantly Aboriginal” as I have never seen InDaily using the terminology of a town being “predominantly white.”

‘Murwillumbah Hospital has a well-functioning, stable and busy ED which retains staff and which the community relies on (dựa vào), and people have serious concerns that these cuts could be the thin edge of the wedge for eventually closing down the hospital.

They will not be the only ones anxious that this is the thin edge of the wedge. What other disadvantaged groups may they later have to report on in the era of identity politics and interlocking circles of oppression (đàn áp)?

"Make great strides" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Etienne Girardet on Unsplash

"Make great strides" = bước tiến dài -> nghĩa là tiến bộ/tiến triển nhanh, đáng kể.

Ví dụ
He is continuing to make great strides during physical therapy (điều trị) and is walking unassisted (không cần hỗ trợ). Check it out. We want to thank Cindy Moore for her donation of treats, as well as Quilts for Cops for their donation as well.

"They have been able to make great strides within rare conditions and conditions that previously were not treated," she said. While they may be very effective, they are also very expensive.

We agree with the Remkes Committee that every sector in the Netherlands should help tackle (xử lí) nitrogen oxides. Our goal is for our airports to be emission free by 2030. This programme intensifies the approach we adopted a number of years ago. We can make great strides with measures that tackle multiple types of emissions.

"Touch bottom" nghĩa là gì?

"Touch bottom" = Chạm đáy -> Chạm chân dưới đáy biển, chạm đến mức tệ nhất/thấp nhất, thất bại nặng nhất.

Ví dụ
“There was a time when we didn’t know when we were going to touch bottom but it’s clear that we have now,’’ Mr Pallas said. “I’m not putting the glasses down that we’re through the worst of it yet but all the data coming back is looking quite encouraging.’’

So starting with Harsco Environmental, revenue and EBITDA is projected to increase low single digits as a result of new contracts and products growth. We also expect to benefit from some improvement on restructuring savings during the year. We are not anticipating much tailwind (gió xuôi) from the steel industry. Although market fundamentals likely touch bottom a couple of months ago, and one of our major customers is pointing to a more normalized growth rate for the industry in 2020.

A prime example is “Rose Room,” a slow-burning, mid-tempo rock tune with impulsive guitar crunchiness and a punchy rhythmic sensibility. “It’s about that feeling when your life is kinda falling apart,” Birnbaum says, “and you touch bottom, and then you push back really hard. I’ve dealt with pretty bad depression for my whole life, and it can be incapacitating (bất lực, làm mất khả năng). And then there’s always a point where some instinct kicks in and breaks me out of it, usually after things feel pretty bad. And it’s just like, ‘You have to get your shit together, right now.’”

"Not touch with a bargepole" nghĩa là gì?

"Not touch (someone or something) with a bargepole" = Không thèm lấy cây sào để đụng vào -> không muốn dính dáng với ai/cái gì

Ví dụ
“Charities need to be run as businesses,” said Ms Bell. “This place has been in liquidation (sự thanh toán mọi khoản để thôi kinh doanh, sự đóng cửa) twice, we wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole if we didn’t think we could do it.” Ms Bell is now leading a dedicated team of former Gorgie City Farm staff who looked after the animals during the winter.

This summary does no justice to the strategy, which is bulging with proposals. It does not even touch the 15 more detailed papers written by individual members. That is a lot of work speedily done. Speed was unnecessary since this ‘national’ government has thrown out ‘secular’ economists, and will not touch them with a bargepole. They should do more careful and detailed work; they have all the time in the world for it.

Boss Ian Baraclough said: ‘Whilst it is a totally normal reaction to defend a team-mate who is the victim of what we all agree was a serious incident, we all recognise that striking out has no place on a football field. ‘Both players were keen to protect their team-mate, but accept the punishment from the compliance officer and are keen to draw a line under the affair.’ Meanwhile, Baraclough on Tuesday night told Mohsni he would not touch him with a bargepole. Whilst admitting Erwin should have walked away from Sunday’s incident, the Fir Park manager believes the Tunisian has bigger issues.

"Not touch a drop" nghĩa là gì?

"Not touch a drop" = Một giọt cũng không đụng -> Không uống rượu, thậm chí một giọt cũng không uống luôn.

Ví dụ
Women who drink a glass of wine every day have healthier hearts than those who do not touch a drop, a study suggests. Researchers found women who regularly consume up to 14 units of alcohol steadily over the course of a week had a lower risk of heart disease than teetotallers (người bài rượu) or binge-drinkers (người uống đến khi say bí tỷ mới thôi).

In some ways it makes sense - as alcohol limits don't take into account things like the driver's tolerance or if they're on antibiotics, for example. And that means the safest way to stay clear of conviction is to not touch a drop before driving. “It can be tempting, particularly in the height of summer, to enjoy a drink in a nice pub beer garden before heading home," said Mark Tongue, from Select Car Leasing , who are advising UK motorists to adopt a zero tolerance booze policy this summer.

Born into a poor Dublin family of 12 children and the son of a violent alcoholic father, Talbot himself began drinking heavily at the age of 12 when he worked for a wine merchant. According to one account, he once pawned his boots in order to buy a pint at a pub. With the help of a priest, he lifted his elbow for the last time when he was 28, vowed to stop drinking, and did not touch a drop until he died of a heart attack in 1925 at the age of 69. He became a devout believer (tín đồ sốt sắng, thành kính), going to Mass often and practicing penitential rites (nghi thức ăn năn, hối lỗi), such as keeping a small chain around his leg. He became a temperance (sự không uống rượu) campaigner.

"Power lunch" nghĩa là gì?

"Power lunch" là bữa ăn trưa trong đó các doanh nhân thảo luận về các kế hoạch, ý tưởng hoặc quyết định quan trọng.

Ví dụ
Sessions lunched at Blue Plate Diner on South Memorial Parkway, taking part in a Huntsville power lunch with Madison County Commission Chair Dale Strong, District Attorney Rob Broussard, Sheriff Kevin Turner and Circuit Judge Alan Mann.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday hosted a power lunch very few could put together in the current political scenario (viễn cảnh) as the big guns of the east enjoyed a sumptuous spread of Odia delicacies along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

But beyond the white and yellow walls of 24 W. 55th St., New York City’s “power lunch” scene that we once knew and loved is all but over. It wasn’t always as real as nostalgists claim — there were tourists as well as Rockefellers even at the hallowed Four Seasons — but there was substance behind the myth. The afternoon ritual was truly one of the things that made the city special.

"Finishing touch" nghĩa là gì?

"Finishing touch" = Lần chạm cuối cùng/quyết định -> Sự thay đổi/sự bổ sung thêm lần cuối, hành động và nỗ lực cuối cùng/quyết định để hoàn thành việc gì.

Ví dụ
Gabriel Jesus said he was delighted to provide the finishing touch after coming off the bench to fire City to victory at Leicester. The Brazilian made an almost instant impact at the King Power Stadium, firing home an 80th minute winner from Riyad Mahrez’s superb run and assist.

This indoor season was one of the best the Utes have ever had, and this weekend was a terrific finishing touch to that part of the year. The Utes will now have a bit of a break before heading into the outdoor portion of the season, where they will need to continue moving forward with the competitive edge they have been playing with up until this point.

Adding more flavor to that liquid gold is the brown butter which is butter that is melted and transformed into brown butter solids making everything more delicious. Let’s not forget the hint of fleur de sel (muối hoa) — an expensive form of sea salt harvested in parts of France. The truffle (nấm cục) honey is obviously great on top of yogurt and accompanies cheeses, ice creams, and nuts as a finishing touch.

"Pass the baton" nghĩa là gì?

Tôi đọc xong rồi, giờ đến lượt ông. Photo by: Ben White on Unsplash

"Pass the baton" = trao cây gậy -> nghĩa là giao trọng trách, trách nhiệm cho người khác (trong cuộc đua tiếp sức, người chạy sẽ đưa cây gậy cho người tiếp theo).

Ví dụ
Mastercard President and CEO Ajay Banga told CNBC Tuesday that he has led the company for more than a decade (thập niên) and that it is time to pass the baton.

It’s probably time to pass the baton on in a couple of years. I’m 33 now, still feeling good. I wouldn’t want to stop now and think, ‘what if I’d gone another year?’ I think I’ll know.

“This is the right time to pass the baton to the next generation of leadership, given the continued success of our business and the spin-off (lợi ích phụ) of our market data and trading operations,” Smith said in a company statement.
