"Extend credit to" nghĩa là gì?

Nhớ ra ngân hàng để được chỉ dẫn tận tình nha. Photo by bongkarn thanyakij from Pexels

"Extend credit to (one)" = gia hạn thẻ tín dụng cho -> cho phép nợ tiền/ cho phép mua bằng thẻ tín dụng.

Ví dụ
Meanwhile, the country's credit ratings have slipped, making international suppliers (nhà cung cấp) less willing to extend credit to importers (nhà nhập khẩu).

The Fed could also enhance (tăng cường) banks' ability to extend credit to businesses (doanh nghiệp) and households (hộ gia đình) and liquidity (thanh khoản) to financial markets.

At the same time, tougher regulation (quy định) on affordability (khả năng chi trả) has limited the number of consumers lenders can extend credit to, the trade body (cơ quan thương mại) said.

This explains why many analysts (nhà phân tích) characterise the land in Zimbabwe as dead capital, as it cannot be collateralised (thế chấp). Because of that, banks are not willing to extend credit to farmers.

"Buy on credit" nghĩa là gì?

"Buy (something) on credit" = mua bằng thẻ tín dụng -> mua trước trả sau.

Ví dụ
For at least six months before you apply for a loan (vay), avoid buying big-ticket (giá trị lớn) items, such as a new car or a washer/dryer set or anything else you need to buy on credit.

If she must return something she bought on credit, she should have the seller write down that she won't owe (nợ) any more money. She may not shop around to get the best buy. She may just buy where she knows she can get credit.

Washing machines, radios, refrigerators, and automobiles all had a great deal of appeal for the average consumer, but few had enough available cash (sẵn tiền mặt) to purchase them. The answer to this was the practice of buying on credit.

Sometimes people use credit to buy things that they want, but do not have a plan to repay (hoàn trả) the money that they borrowed. This leads to people not paying their bills, losing the goods and services that they bought on credit, and making it more difficult to borrow money in the future.

"Play for laughs" nghĩa là gì?

"Play (something) for laughs" = Chỉ chơi cho vui, cho mọi người cười/gây tiếng cười cho mọi người.

Ví dụ
He's a full foot taller than she, which they sometimes play for laughs. But it also makes sense. She's tiny, but tough; he's a bear, but a softie.

Ferrell is a major source of the problem. His casting as husband Pete dulls the movie’s inciting incident, because viewers have been conditioned to see him as just the kind of buffoon (anh hề) who might run away from his family in an impending disaster. With Ferrell in the lead, everything becomes a joke, and it’s often unclear whether the writers intended for him to play for laughs or if that’s just the way Ferrell’s gangly, wide-eyed shtick renders material this tonally confused.

What Fulljames never anticipated when asked to work on the opera was the opportunity to play for laughs. “When I met Adams early on, I was expecting to have an earnest conversation about politics, but his principal concern and advice to me was ‘get the humour right’, which, it soon became clear to me, was all about it’s importance in humanising the characters, not about creating caricatures (tranh biếm hoạ) and not about being crude. So Kissinger needing to excuse himself to go to the toilet is deeply human, and it should be funny, but it shouldn’t turn him into a figure who’s lampooned (đả kích, bài bác).”

"Play footsie with" nghĩa là gì?

"Play footsie with (one)" = chạm nhẹ vào chân ai để tỏ tình/quyến rũ; hợp tác/tham gia thực hiện kế hoạch với ai.

Ví dụ
Watching the finance committee on-line, it's clear that the staff rolls over the council members who show up to play footsie with them.

“We are not going to allow you to play footsie with the DG (director-general) and allow you to protect each other… This is why it’s hard for names to come out. In every instance, the DGs name is crossed out… This kind of dishonesty makes me sick to the pit of my stomach.”

The sudden and mysterious escape of Ehsanullah Ehsan, a former spokesman of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and later Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, clearly indicates how the security agencies play footsie with terrorists. The man involved in the attack on Malala Yusufzai and numerous killings surrendered after negotiating a deal with the military establishment and there is complete silence on the government’s part on how such a high-prized terrorist can escape from under the nose of the security agencies.

"Give a credit to" nghĩa là gì?

Không có huấn luyện viên thì không có tôi ngày hôm nay. Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels

"Give credit to (someone)" = ghi vào bên có của ai (một món tiền...) -> công nhận ai có (công trạng, đức tính gì).

Ví dụ
It passed in the senate (thượng viện) with 69 percent of Democrats (đảng Dân chủ) in favor and 82 percent of Republicans (đảng Cộng hòa), led strongly by Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen (R-IL). Let’s give a little credit to the Republicans.

“We have to give tremendous (rất lớn) credit to Donald Trump,” Mr. McAuliffe said. “He has been the single biggest driver to the Democratic Party of Virginia. There are a lot of like-minded (cùng chí hướng) Republicans who said, ‘I can’t vote for Trump but you got to give me somebody who we can vote for.’ Biden was always at the top of that list.”

“I asked him could I go to the NBA if I came to his program,” Allen said. “He told me if I listen to him and do all of the things that’s required (yêu cầu) of me at this program, then I’m going to be a pro. Now look at me, a 14-year-veteran (người kỳ cựu) all coming from coach Sutton. I’ve got to give all my credit to him because he straightened me up (vực dậy) a whole lot.”

"Play first chair" nghĩa là gì?

"Play first chair" = Chơi ghế đầu -> Người nhóm trưởng trong ban nhạc/nhạc cụ; hành động như một người lãnh đạo.

Ví dụ
He was orphaned at age five, but before World War II, Jack Tueller would play first-chair trumpet in the Brigham Young University orchestra.

As a matter of fact, many secret meetings have been organized with many people who want to be in charge of the country's government after Erdogan. I want to write the names of the different profiles that could play the first chair in the leadership of Turkey after Erdogan.

What tips would you give to someone aiming for a c-level position? A great C-level leader is like a great conductor. A conductor's job is to bring a set of individual voices together to create harmony through music. This requires both developing and inspiring the individuals as well as ensuring the voices come together to deliver the musical piece. The conductor's job isn't to play first chair in each musical group but instead to get the most out of each musician in the orchestra. The same holds for a C-level executive. It is about creating great outcomes through others. To do this you need to invest time into the development of your leadership and people development skills, skills like conflict resolution, empathetic listening, etc., the tradecraft of leadership.

"Take/get credit (for something)" hoặc "have the credit of" = hưởng công trạng về (việc gì) -> được công nhận, khen ngợi, tán thành cho điều gì (không cần biết xứng đáng hay không).

Ví dụ
Presidential hopeful Mike Bloomberg gets credit for leading New York “through” the 9/11 attacks in a campaign ad (chiến dịch quảng cáo).

Mocking (chế nhạo) an earlier Obama tweet as a "con job," Trump blasted (phá hoại) Obama for "now trying to take credit for the economic boom taking place under the Trump administration (chính quyền)."

Frank Lampard spoke to the media after his press conference (cuộc họp báo) today, and while the focus was heavily on him and his changes to the lineup (đội hình) and formation, the manager himself wanted the players to take the credit.

Income inequality (bất bình đẳng thu nhập) has started shrinking (thu hẹp) in Canada, and policies designed to help low-income earners (người có thu nhập thấp)― including minimum wage hikes (tăng mức lương tối thiểu)― can take credit for some of that.

"Play fast and loose" nghĩa là gì?

"Play fast and loose" = lập lờ hai mặt; chơi nhanh nhưng không chắc chắn -> Hành động cẩu thả, thiếu suy nghĩ và liều lĩnh trước ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
The unwillingness of the Leader to discuss the Chief Executive’s absence from work is very worrying from a council leader who has already proved himself willing to play fast and loose with the rules governing appropriate conduct for councillors.

This week, The Namibian reported that Goeiemann ignored the public bidding process and hand-picked a Dubai state-owned company to run the newly built N$4,2 billion Walvis Bay port terminal. He is not the only executive director to flout the very tenets (giáo lý, chủ nghĩa) of good governance and play fast and loose with public funds.

The strange virality of the Corona poll demonstrates that there are ruthless PR flacks who are willing to play fast and loose with the truth. It also shows that there are many journalists at supposedly trustworthy news outlets who are so desperate to rush to publication that they can wind up misinforming their public. (What else is new?)

"Play down to" nghĩa là gì?

"Play down to (someone or something)" = Hạ mình lại/chiếu cố cho ai, hạ bớt lại sự quyết tâm/tham vọng của mình khi thi đấu với ai (nhường họ); bớt lại sự quan trọng của cái gì.

Ví dụ
This take us to the third key which is for the OKC Thunder to play their own game. Play with the same intensity they would any other match and not play down to their competition.

"I'm very fortunate, that in my first year on varsity (trường đại học, đội đại diện cho trường đại học), I had Angela as a teammate for her last season," Shaw said. "It helps that she is a tall player. When I go into the game, I'm not scared of any opponent because I practice against Angela. It definitely built my confidence. Angela doesn't play down to anyone. She plays the same defense on me that she plays in the games.

They also beat a Jimmy Butler-less Heat team at home, but other than that you’d be hard-pressed to find any impressive wins in there. Most of the time the Kings play down to their opponents, like narrow victories over the Grizzlies and Pistons this past weekend. They’ve gotten pasted by most of the real teams that they’ve played during this time (Thunder by 20, Lakers by 16, Bucks by 12 without Giannis, Mavericks by 19, Thunder again by 4 where they blew a 19-point lead).

Cadet Manqueros’ personal dedication (sự cống hiến), accomplishments (tài nghệ) and leadership (khả năng lãnh đạo) reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program.

"Dance on someone's grave" = nhảy trên mộ -> vui mừng vì ai đó đã chết hoặc vì họ thất bại.

Ví dụ
“I have not thought about it, but when I die, just dance on my grave and water the plants with what you are drinking. Please do not clone (nhân bản) me, because after a while your clone is not as bright as you are.”

Characteristically (đặc trưng), he revelled (say sưa) in his imminent (sắp đến) extinction. “Bloom, Brontosaurus, Bardolator” he called himself: a dinosaur and a worshipper of Shakespeare. On social media, academics and critics have been queuing (xếp hàng) to dance on his grave. The irony is: they are doomed, not him.

Recently many commentators have asserted (khẳng định) that the Tea Party (đảng Trà) was a failure and is dead. A NY Times article said “the ideas that animated the Tea Party movement have been largely abandoned by Republicans under President Trump”, because deficit spending (chi tiêu thâm hụt) has ballooned (tăng vọt) since he took office. Senator Rand Paul said “The Tea Party is no more.” A New Yorker article noted “the movement’s failure”, because they did not achieve a repeal of Obamacare. Jeff Jacoby, the conservative columnist (nhà báo chuyên mục) for the Boston Globe, “mourned its demise in February 2018 under the title, “The Tea Party is dead and buried, and the GOP just danced on its grave”. He focused on the Tea Party’s inability to get Republicans to rein in spending.

Ví dụ
People tend to to follow winning athletes because it allows them to bath in their reflected glory. This is a psychological (thuộc tâm lý học) term that refers to our desire (mong ước) to associate ourselves with success or prestige (uy thế).

Jay was recently announced (công bố) as a Class of 2020 inductee (người được tuyển) into the Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame. Because Jay predates the Athletes of Week feature of the Cape Gazette and The Whale, it was decided to frame his photo and allow him to bask in the reflected glory of his past.

While the Carnival parade (diễu hành) used to be a chance for Brazilian politicians (chính trị gia) to bask in the reflected glory of the celebration, today they often find themselves at the center of samba (điệu nhảy người Brazil) schools’ criticisms (chỉ trích) and so are avoiding Brazil's largest cultural show.

Young men and women slog through years of training just for a fleeting (thoáng qua) shot at competing (thi đấu) in the Olympic Games.

In this episode (tập phim) of the wildly popular Into the Basket, Julie DiCaro, Evan Altman, and Brad Robinson discuss the long and boring slog through spring training.

The bond market (thị trường công trái) seems overbought, but its extreme moves (động thái cực đoan) also could be an indication (dấu hiệu) that we might have more pain to slog through before things improve.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) seems determined (quyết tâm) to slog through the race out of some combination of stubbornness (bướng bỉnh), righteous (chính đáng) indignation (phẫn nộ) and obliviousness (lãng quên).

"Flog learning into somebody" nghĩa là đánh để bắt ai phải học.

Ví dụ
School-teachers may no longer flog learning into their pupils. The lecture system (hệ thống bài giảng) had changed too.

At Antioch, Pennell introduced the course (khóa học) Didactics to Antioch, which involved the training of teaching methods (phương pháp giảng dạy). Up until then, it was assumed (cho rằng) all a teacher needed was a strong will and right arm. Pennell, however, tried to get teachers to do more than flog learning into their students.

The father of the celebrated (lừng danh) Archdeacon Paley, taught a grammar school within a mile of my native village. He was more remarkable (chú ý) for his severity (nghiêm khắc) than any other teacher known in those parts. He lived and taught there somewhat before my time; but many an eulogy (ca tụng) I have heard pronounced upon him, when I was a boy, for his flogging qualities. “He was a prime (tốt nhất) teacher,” said the men of that day, “for he flogged learning into his scholars (học giả)."

"Play a trick on (one)" = Lừa lọc ai, làm ai bối rối/mơ hồ về điều gì; cố tình đánh lạc hướng ai; đùa giỡn ai.

Ví dụ
The story goes that children would dress in costume and go from door to door and say ‘Fastelavn is my name and if you don’t give us the rolls we’re going to play a trick on you.’ In fact, the idea of Halloween trick or treat comes from that tradition.

One of the most recent viral clips from Youtube shows the terrible blooper that starred a young Uber Eats deliveryman who had to deliver some pizzas. He tried to record a video for his social networks and had no better idea than to impress his ‘fans’ with a risky acrobatics; However, he never imagined that his work backpack would play a trick on him and make him look ridiculous.

Picked on by some because we didn't rodeo (cưỡi ngựa, quăng dây, diễn mô tô) or play football, Forrest and I finally found someone we could harass. We were going to play a trick on this poor guy and opened his locker on the sly. His lunch, well, stunk. So much so, we got an idea. We swapped his daily sandwich for Mighty Dog. By Purina. We were in line shaking with excitement to see if he would eat it. Our friend (maybe not by his definition) normally ate his sandwiches in five bites.

He was impressed (ấn tượng) by the number of people who must have slogged their guts out digging (đào) the pool.

I just feel for the blokes (gã) that go in there week in week out, flog their guts out to no avail (ích lợi), knowing they're going out to get flogged.

“The biggest-ever month, I made £30,000,” she says, brushing out her curls. “I slogged my guts out. It was amazing money-wise, but difficult mentally (về tinh thần).”

Good move for him I think. Rather than flog his guts out in mid-table (đội bóng giữa bảng) he gets a pay rise to play in an easier league (giải đấu), and gets to experience a new culture.

A Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri has remanded (tạm giam) one Mohammed Haruna in prison for flogging his teenage daughter to death.

It's abused (lạm dụng) here and it sucks as it's something I enjoyed on the previous record (bản thu âm) as it was littered in intervals (quãng). But seriously, they're flogging it to death now.

“The average number of books in a U.S. household is 114, according to a just-published paper called "Scholarly culture: How books in adolescence enhance adult literacy, numeracy and technology skills in 31 societies." 114 is a good number. The paper's authors studied 160,000 adults between 2011 and 2015 and found that just having 80 or more books in a home results in adults with significantly higher levels of literacy, numeracy, and information communication technology (ICT) skills. The paper finds, "Growing up with home libraries boosts adult skills in these areas beyond the benefits accrued from parental education or own educational or occupational attainment."

"Split the log" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Oleg Magni from Pexels

"Split the log" nghĩa đen là xẻ khúc gỗ, ngoài ra từ "log" có thể hiểu là viết tắt của logarit trong toán học -> giải thích, phân tích, cắt nghĩa loga.

Ví dụ
The roof is often formed by splitting the logs into two and is covered with material (vật liệu) that will render the roof waterproof (chống thấm nước).

Therefore, if I have 6 compute nodes (điện toán tập trung) and a 10GB log file, I will split my log file allocation (phân bổ) into 6 approximately 1.6GB allocations.

You could also split the log file based on the virtual host (máy chủ ảo) for combined (kết hợp) log files; the split-logfile script (bản thảo) supplied with Apache can be used this way.

Unfortunately (không may), neither format (định dạng) includes the name of the virtual host (a %v variable), which you need to split the log by host. Therefore, if you want to do this you'll need to define (xác định) a new logfile type.

Việt Nam làm gì để kích cầu trong dịch Covid-19?

1/ central banks should develop a facility to assure that credit is not cut off to key sectors of the economy, come what may. Steadily available credit is much more important than lower-priced credit.

2/ as huge excess capacity at major global ports suggests, this is a moment for less — not more — interference with trade flows. Though it may go against the president’s instincts, the United States should lead a global effort to reduce tariffs as a source of stimulus for the duration of the health emergency.
