"Soft reboot" nghĩa là gì?

Làm lại thế nào thì tùy, em chỉ cần có phim để xem thôi. Photo by from Pexels

"Soft reboot" có từ "reboot" là khởi động lại nguồn -> khởi động lại thiết bị mà không cần phải rút dây cắm. Cụm từ này cũng nói đến loại phim hoặc chương trình truyền hình làm lại nhưng thay đổi hầu hết nhân vật, bối cảnh... so với phim gốc.

Ví dụ
Westworld creators (người tạo ra) Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are attempting a soft reboot in Season 3 to unlock the abundance of potential (tiềm năng phong phú) packed into its core concept.

It's already possible to reboot userspace in Android 11 with this command (lệnh). In a quick test of a fresh Android 11 install (cài đặt) on a Pixel 2 XL, the speeds weren't too remarkable (khỏe). Results varied across several tests, but soft reboots only averaged about 15% faster than a full reboot — that means you're only shaving off 2-4 seconds.

Following the middling reception (tiếp nhận) Resident Evil 6 received, the developer (nhà phát triển) took action by going back to the drawing board. The result, of course, was a soft reboot in the form of Resident Evil 7 which, despite making some controversial (gây tranh cãi) changes, marked a welcome return to the series’ survival horror roots (phim kinh dị sinh tồn).

"Soft job" nghĩa là gì?

Nếu phải lựa chọn, hãy cứ chọn việc nhẹ lương cao. Photo by bongkarn thanyakij from Pexels

"Soft job" = công việc nhẹ nhàng, không áp lực.

Ví dụ
They talk about looking for gold at the end of a rainbow (điều ao ước); but if a man wants an employment (công việc) that'll last him till he dies, let him start out on the soft-job hunt (săn).

Suppose (giả sử) you had just gone to classification (phân loại) and had been given a choice between two jobs. One was a pretty soft job and the other was a little harder but the kind of thing you liked to do. So which do you choose?

More women are in soft jobs. The kind of work women finds representation in has, meanwhile, been heavily skewed towards (chuyển hướng mạnh) those that require soft skills (kỹ năng mềm) and not those that need managerial skills (kỹ năng quản lý).

"Soft core" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alexander Krivitskiy from Pexels

"Soft-core" là thể loại phim người lớn (porn) với mức độ nhẹ, ít trần trụi hơn và không bạo lực. Mạnh bạo hơn thì có "hard-core" nhé. Ngoài ra "soft-core" cũng chỉ chung những loại hình như âm nhạc, game... là mức độ nhẹ.

Ví dụ
We all know the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is essentially (về cơ bản) softcore porn.

Wikipedia helpfully describes softcore porn as "sexually arousing (gợi dục) and aesthetically (có thẩm mỹ) beautiful."

In their distinctive (đặc biệt) softcore EDM, it's hard not to see a through line to Lauv whose debut album “~how i'm feeling~” drops today.

The album is your classic (cổ điển) softcore-pop experience, perfect for those study vibes I know fellow students seem to be looking forever for.

"Soft berth" nghĩa là gì?

"Ai cũng chọn việc nhẹ nhàng, dồn hết cả lên đầu tôi." Photo by from Pexels

"Soft berth" có từ "berth" nghĩa chính là cái giường ngủ trên tàu, nghĩa khác là địa vị, việc làm -> tình huống/công việc/vị trí dễ dàng.

Ví dụ
This he agreed to, but he did not want the instructor (hướng dẫn viên) position at Pendleton they offerred to him; he termed that a “soft berth.” His buddies thought he was crazy for wanting a return to combat in the jungle (chiến đấu trong rừng).

"Thank God I've already shaved (cạo râu). If there's one thing I loathe (ghét) it's shaving. Those lads in the House of David—what a soft berth they picked for themselves .” Young Poole stood up . He took off a faded dressing gown (áo choàng) made of toweling and went, in his underwear, to the basin (bồn rửa).

The literary students read Rupert Brooke passionately (một cách say mê); the lounge-lizards worried over whether the government would permit (cấp phép) the English uniform for officers; a few of the hopelessly lazy wrote to the obscure (vô danh) branches of the War Department, seeking an easy commission (nhiệm vụ) and a soft berth.

"Play me false" nghĩa là gì?

"Play (one) false" = Đánh lừa ai; phản bội ai.

Ví dụ
Yasmine Hamdan more explicitly (rõ ràng, dứt khoát) eschews (kiêng cữ, tránh làm) such idealising sentimentality in her gorgeous hymn to a bygone Beirut. Assuming the translation doesn’t play me false, it wasn’t all “arak-drinking” and “card-playing” back then; this “fancy living, excess of splurging, exploded vanity (hư ảo, rỗng tuếch)” was smothering (bao phủ) the city she loved.

When Aaron McGruder’s instincts play him false, which happens often enough, they usually take him to more original places than this. The show hits rock bottom when Tom angrily tells the singer that he’s starting to wonder if he even really beat his girlfriend. The singer is indignant (căm phẫn, phẫn nộ): “Don’t you ever question whether I beat Christiana. I whupped that bitch’s ass!”

The airspeed indicator may be the oldest and most fundamental of the flight instruments, but it is also the one least suited to its job, which is primarily not to tell us how fast we are going but rather where we are in the flight envelope. It is pleasant to know, as we cruise along, that we are indicating 137 knots; but the airspeed indicator is most important at low speeds, close to the stall, and it is there that it is most likely to play us false.

"Play all the angles" nghĩa là gì?

"Play (all) the angles" = Chơi mọi ngóc ngách/góc -> Tận dụng mọi cơ hội/phương cách có được để đạt mục đích của mình.

Ví dụ
That's OK because they're successful hard driving business executives who play all the angles? That's male privilege at its absolute best.

As a properly starchy (chứa tinh bột) Mary Poppins, Hux delights kids at birthday parties. As the booty-shaking MC Sweet Tea, she leads her Tastee Hotz dancers in feminist rabble-rousers like “Why Don’t Saint Sensations Get Paid?” In “A Day Late and a Dollar Shot,” an immersive Hux production staged at the New Quorum in 2019, she was a bourbon-swilling Storyville denizen (cư dân) who knows how to play all the angles. And when she steps up to the mic with Malevitus, she’s a high priestess of rock and roll who calls down our collective demons in an ecstatic exorcism (phù phép, thần chú xuất thần).

But three things above all that I must verify is no, Detective Flores did not “save your life,” and no, he will not be turning up any “missing ex-boyfriends” from my past and no, I am not a “serial killer.” My goodness, those things are so far from the truth. After getting over the initial shock and indignation (sự căm phẫn, phẫn nộ) that he would propose such notions and the realization that, while, this Detective really does play all the angles, I actually got a small laugh out of such ridiculousness and even cried out,” what a freaking bone-head!” in reference to him. (Jail has made me no less a dork (kẻ ngớ ngẩn, ngu si) that I was prior to my rest).

"A soft answer turneth away wrath" nghĩa là gì?

Giận quá mất khôn, nhẹ nhàng, thẳng thắn thì mới giải quyết được vấn đề. Photo by Svyatoslav Reyentenko

"A soft answer turns/turneth away wrath" = một câu trả lời nhẹ nhàng sẽ xóa tan cơn thịnh nộ -> tương tự một điều nhịn là chín điều lành.

Ví dụ
What if someone expresses a strong controversial (tranh cãi) opinion that is opposite to my point of view?
At the conclusion (kết thúc) of his/her remarks, briefly express thanks in a respectful (tôn trọng) voice. Then, present your ideas with a calm voice, and hopefully with logic. Remember, “A soft answer turneth away wrath”.

If this observation seems mushy (ủy mị) and unsatisfying (không thỏa mãn), it’s because it is. Hard-edged prescriptions (toa thuốc) may do more harm than good, inviting vinegar (giấm) where balm (dầu thơm) is needed. Evangelical (theo đạo) or not, we could do worse than to heed Proverbs 15:1 “A soft answer turneth away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

This may not always be easy, but I encourage (khuyến khích) couples to try to do their best to speak softly and kindly to each other, even when they are upset. The Bible (Kinh thánh) says in Proverbs 15:1 that, “A soft answer turns away wrath…” Believe it or not, we can express ourselves in a disagreement (sự bất đồng) without raising our voices or being abusive!

"Nice play, Shakespeare" nghĩa là gì?

"Nice play, Shakespeare" = Vở kịch hay đấy, Shakespeare/đúng là vở kịch của Shakespeare -> Cách nói châm biếm về hành động/điều gì ngớ ngẩn, vụng về và dại dột của ai.

Ví dụ
Nice play, Shakespeare! Bend it the other way, already. Do you really expect an answer?

Nice play, Shakespeare! It's clear that the Democrat's whole case in the court of public opinion.

“She just kept me in suspense,” Richard said. “I’d say prayers. I told God, ‘If you don’t give me her, I’ll never talk to you again.’ Nice play, Shakespeare!

"Power hitter" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by sefton Marks on Unsplash

"Power hitter" nghĩa là người có khả năng đánh bóng ở khoảng cách xa trong môn bóng chày, cricket.

Ví dụ
While Davis likely won’t be the power hitter who slugged 53 home runs in 2013, any form of success is a welcome sign for a player whose confidence was sapped over the last few seasons.

So what are the potential causes of his lethal efficiency? What changes did he make, if at all, from a year ago? Why is staying connected so important in terms of getting to the ball? Does he have any commonalities (tương đồng) to fellow lefty power hitter Alex Toral?

Given the Dodgers' depth in the outfield (khu vực xa cửa thành), the team will continue to take a conservative approach to bringing Pederson back, but it looks as though he'll be able to avoid a trip to the injured list. The left-handed power hitter slugged a career-high 36 home runs during 2019 and registered an impressive 920 against right-handed pitching.

"Have it to play with" nghĩa là gì?

"Have (something) to play with" = Có dư thừa/quá nhiều cái gì để làm một việc nào đó hoặc tùy ý sử dụng, ví dụ như có nhiều tiền bạc/thời gian để làm việc gì.

Ví dụ
"Once you get a mark you have time to play with. Take a few steps back, take a look up. If there’s something on great, if there’s nothing on, keep the ball.

It's unclear. Under the UK's unwritten constitution, a new PM doesn't need to establish his or her working majority with an immediate affirmatorry vote. So the next PM will have time to play with, but still faces two challenges.

Now that the Sox have money to play with, they’ll likely try to lock up both Devers or Rodriguez soon. Rodriguez, who’s a free agent after 2021, would be more of a priority than Devers, who is under control for three more years.

"When the band begins to play" nghĩa là gì?

"When the band begins to play" = Khi ban nhạc bắt đầu diễn -> Khi mà tình hình trở nên nghiêm trọng, rắc rối và phức tạp.

Ví dụ
So keep shouting from the rooftops about Manchester's secret gig movement, just remember to keep it shtum when the band begins to play.

I was nearing 4,000m on the ascent to Colombia’s Cerros Los Nevados when the band begins to play. My trekking partner, delirious (hôn mê) from the cold, thinning air had begun to struggle with his balance as we slowly pushed up the volcanic mountainside and I was close to follow.

Moreover, it was compounded by Dr. Murphy deciding to bring the patient to the hospital instead of just calling EMS when the band begins to play, which would have resulted in faster transportation as well as faster provision of care. Summed up, The Good Doctor is fun to watch, but it has its share of questionable moments from the perspective of accuracy.

"A soft option" nghĩa là gì?

"A soft option" = phương án mềm -> sự lựa chọn/ phương án dễ dàng hơn, nhẹ nhàng hơn, ít cạnh tranh hoặc ít gây áp lực hơn so với các lựa chọn khác.

Ví dụ
Professor (giáo sư) Danny Dorling recently declared (tuyên bố) Geography as being a ‘soft option’. I don’t believe these subjects are ‘soft’ subjects.

He described the penalty (hình phạt) as "merciful" (nhân từ) and noted that higher courts (tòa án) had continually stressed (nhấn mạnh) the sentence should be seen as serious and not a soft option compared to incarceration (tống giam).

Contracts (hợp đồng) with soft options typically contain a clause (điều khoản)that allows the government to extend a contract simply by providing written notice (thông báo bằng văn bản) to the contractor with an agreemet to negotiate (đàm phán) the terms and conditions of the extension.

"(As) soft/smoohth as a baby's bottom" = mềm mại như mông em bé -> rất mượt mà. Các cụm có nghĩa tương tự là "soft as silk", "soft as a baby's backside, "soft as down", "soft as velvet".

Ví dụ
This song will hit your ears as soft as velvet.

My first memory of what ‘good skin’ feels like is my grandfather putting my hands on his face after shaving (cạo râu). ‘Soft as a baby’s bottom,’ he’d declare.

Visitors spend as much time soaking in the pools (ngâm mình trong hồ bơi) as they do soaking up the serene (thanh bình) atmosphere, and they emerge deeply restored (phục hồi), with skin as smooth as silk.

What if a lip balm (son dưỡng) and a lip gloss (son bóng) had a baby? It'd be a lip oil! This soft-as-a-baby's-bottom, too-good-to-be-true texture (kết cấu) hugs your lips with a hydrating (ngậm nước) cherry oil that smells as delightful as it feels.

"Exercise power over them" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Lauren York on Unsplash

"Exercise power/influence over (somebody/something)" nghĩa là khẳng định quyền kiểm soát, quyền hạn đối với ai hoặc cái gì đó.

Ví dụ
Speaking from her home in Devon, she told GMB’s Richard Bacon and Susanna Reid: ‘I have no regrets at all. If you actually listen to what I said, it’s quite clear I said that throughout history there’s been a pattern of people turning on those who exercise power over them.

You’ve not only learned the names of so many things, you’ve also acquired massive naming powers, which are a bit like Jedi powers. Like Adam and Eve before you, you can name the details of the world in a way that escapes most of us, and when you name people and things, you exercise power over them.

A harmonious (hòa hợp) political future requires new approaches to using technology and AI not just to innovate, but also to explain and involve average citizenry (toàn thể công dân) in the governing process, which would return to the governed a sense of pride and investment in their governing systems. Even as we are confronted by greater and greater challenges, we must acknowledge the right of the governed to feel seen by the systems which exercise power over them.

"Soap scum" nghĩa là gì?

Có người giàu sẽ có người nghèo, đó là đặc điểm của xã hội. Photo by Sahab Shamilov

"Soap scum" = lớp cặn xà phòng (lớp bọt còn lại bám vào các vật thể vì chưa rửa sạch). Nghĩa bóng chỉ một người bần hèn, đê tiện, cặn bã.

Ví dụ
Just because someone is poor does not mean that person is the soap scum of the Earth.

You can also mix it with baking soda and a teaspoon of salt to create a soap scum-removing paste (hỗn hợp loại bỏ).

'He was cleaning my shower screen with it and it looks amazing – all the soap scum has gone.' Magic eraser. Look at that shine!

There's no law against the kind of crap (nhảm nhí) you dish out, Mister, but I have to tell you, there has to be a special place in hell for soap scum like you, lying scum! This man died we don't know how, but it wasn't little green men, Goddamn you!”

"Soft Soap" = xà phòng mềm, là loại xà phòng bột hay lỏng mà người ta dùng để rửa tay hay giặt rũ quần áo, chén bát. Ngoài ra, người Mỹ còn dùng từ này để chỉ những lời nói quá hay tâng bốc để thuyết phục người khác.

Ví dụ
If Andrew Bailey thought he could soft-soap his way to approval (chấp thuận) by the Treasury Select Committee as Governor of the Bank of England, he will be chagrined (bất mãn).

I loved how this week Marco Vallerand said that Saturday’s game against Fife wasn’t “just another game” and that the team had “revenge” (trả thù) on their mind going in. I love a bit of revenge, it’s an under used word in these soft soap days we live in.

Whitty never tried to soft-soap or minimise (giảm thiểu) the situation. In a worst-case scenario (trường hợp xấu nhất), 80% of the country could get the virus, the mortality rate (tỷ lệ tử vong) could reach 1%, with the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions (mắc bệnh nền) most at risk, and there would be no chance of the NHS having enough beds.

"Soap plant" nghĩa là gì?

"Soap plant" = cây xà phòng là loại cây có thể làm thành xà phòng thiên nhiên như soapberry, soapwort. "Plant-based Soap" nghĩa là loại xà phòng làm từ thiên nhiên.

Ví dụ
“We’re constantly (thường xuyên) washing our hands, especially with all the sickness going around,” she adds. But because you get 17 ounces with this Live Clean soap — most hand soaps offer around 12 ounces — she is “sure it will last us much longer than our typical (thông thường) plant-based hand soap.”

Poison oak (sồi độc) was sprinkled (phun, tưới) along the route, but the docents (giáo sư) were quick to point it out to their fellow hikers. They also pointed out some of the more pleasant native flora (thảo mộc)– buttercups ( cây mao lương hoa vàng), golden poppies (anh túc vàng) and the Indian soap plant.

What Matt deems (xem là) “plant-based soap,” Laundry Soap Nuts are a new eco-friendly (thân thiện với môi trường) laundry product that contain detergent (chất tẩy) and will break down completely in your washer. They come in muslin (vải mỏng) bags and will make your clothes, sheets, and towels feel (and smell) perfectly fresh and clean.

"Turnabout is fair play" nghĩa là gì?

"Turnabout is fair play" = Xoay ngược lại thì mới công bằng -> Ai cũng có cơ hội để làm điều gì; thật đáng cho ai chịu lại tai họa/đau khổ khi họ đã gây đau khổ cho người khác (gieo nhân nào gặp quả nấy).

Ví dụ
After losing to the Rochester Falcons the last time they met, the Avondale Yellowjackets decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. Avondale beat Rochester 48-40 on Friday. That was the first win for the Yellowjackets since their win over Rochester when the two teams previously met in February of last year.

After Adam Stoler first started attacking me some time ago, I started keeping a file of his letters. Up to this point, I have ignored him. But enough is enough, and so turnabout is fair play. I’ll just add the following to what Mr. Warren had to say about Mr. Stoler: Mr. Stoler inanely contradicts himself from one letter to another, and even within the same letter.

Jumping right into the action with Murtagh and his Regulators (sounds like an 80s band), we can’t help but wince (nhăn mặt, cau mày) — alongside Jamie when he surveys the damage — as North Carolina officials are brutally tarred and feathered. Though Murtagh answers their cries for mercy with a turnabout-is-fair-play mentality, it’s difficult to feel aligned with such violence …no matter how good he looks in a bonnet (mũ bê-rê).

Ăn từ từ thôi nhé. Photo by: MAX LIBERTINE on Unsplash

"Chomping at the bit" = ngoác mồm ngoạm miếng bé xíu -> nghĩa là nóng vội, mất bình tĩnh, thiếu kiên nhẫn khi làm việc gì.

Ví dụ
Goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons is “chomping” at the bit to start his first Chesterfield game. The 25-year-old, who is on loan (cho mượn) from Notts County until the end of the season, has not been able to prise the number one shirt from Shwan Jalal so far.

The quiet, unassuming (khiêm tốn) figure of Ryan Oosthuizen is a perfect example of what the Blitzboks are about, and the lanky (gầy và cao) 24-year-old is chomping at the bit to contribute to his team’s fortunes at this weekend’s Los Angeles Sevens.

Danni Wyatt admits she is “chomping at the bit” to begin England’s quest to win the Women’s T20 World Cup and believes their experience of Australian conditions will stand them in good stead.

"Build a better mousetrap" = làm cái bẫy chuột tốt hơn -> nghĩa là phát triển hoặc tạo ra sản phẩm mới tốt hơn cái đang được sử dụng rộng rãi.

Ví dụ
As they say, if you can build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your company’s door. Your mousetrap ingenuity (khéo léo) forces my business to innovate (phát triển) as well. To succeed, I must learn from your successes, avoid your failures and figure out how to compete in the mousetrap marketplace.

Because nearly 20 years ago, a few doctors, public health experts and officials realized that nearly no one was meeting a national need for such specialized care and figured, why not Omaha? “We all wanted to build a better mousetrap,” said Dr. Phil Smith, an infectious disease (bệnh lây nhiễm) expert (chuyên gia) who led the effort to create the biocontainment unit at Nebraska Medical Center.

The key to a functional government for both McArthur and Pike is to listen to the people, and, if required, build a better mousetrap to make things work for future generations. “I will always be listening,” McArthur said. “I will have my beliefs (lòng tin), but I will always listen to all points of view and decide accordingly.”

"The way it plays" =  Bản chất nó như vậy, cách nó diễn ra là như vậy không thể thay đổi được.

Ví dụ
“For me, Pep is the best coach I had and the best coach in the world,” the 41-year-old told Goal and SPOX. “You can immediately tell that a team is coached by Pep by the way it plays. That's why I'm convinced he will win that title again.

You can see this team’s coach in the way it plays. There’s an irony (mỉa mai, châm biếm) of course in their moniker (tên lóng, bí danh). At its best, Team Fun is no fun to play at all. Nothing is conceded. No sacrifice is too great. And the team is the most important thing. That’s who Coach was as a player, and that’s damn sure who this team is this season.

Although it may not be the main draw, the Versus RPG mode is the first option players will have when starting up. It plays a tad differently than regular one-on-one matches, but it also acts as one of the two ways new players can learn how the basic control scheme works. The first few quests will act more or less like tutorials and the way it plays is a little bit more like an arcade (dãy cuốn) beat ’em up than a straight fighter.

"Soap up/down" nghĩa là chà, cọ xà phòng vào ai/cái gì (tắm bằng xà phòng chẳng hạn).

Ví dụ

"Don't drop the soap " nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Felipe Vallin from Pexels

"Don't drop the soap!"

Medal said his new book, “Don’t Drop the Soap,” provides a comedic look (cái nhìn hài hước) at what life is really like behind bars (sau song sắt).

One simple tweet from Nicki Minaj is causing a flurry of speculation (xôn xao dư luận) on Twitter. As seen below, Minaj tweeted a suggestion to some unknown person to not drop the soap, and she included an emoji of a monkey with his hands covering his eyes.

"Don't drop the soap!" is a joke premise so prolific (sinh sôi nảy nở) that it barely even registers as a rape (hiếp dâm) joke anymore. The danger here is strikingly obvious. By normalizing (bình thường hóa) a rape joke to such an extent that most people don't even register (nhận thức) it as a rape joke, we also normalize the sentiment behind it––that prison rape is okay, and possibly even deserved.

"(Well), wash one's mouth out with soap" = rửa lại mồm bằng xà phòng -> cảnh cáo ai nói năng cẩn thận, tránh "vạ miệng".

Ví dụ
Remember when your moms threatened (dọa) you with washing your mouth out with soap? I went through a period when I could not control my language.

Then depending on what it was she'd heard me say, she might tell me to go wash my mouth out with soap! Have you ever had to wash your mouth out with soap? It's disgusting (kinh tởm).

While you may feel I am pushing the envelope (phong bì) at times, think of it more like a thank-you note. Please be advised (thận trọng) that I have kept my foul (tục tĩu) language to the bare bones, knowing my mother might read this and seek to wash my mouth out with soap.

According to the district, Guyette Duhart, who worked at Polo Park Middle School in Wellington, was upset with the student, telling him "you need to have your mouth washed out with soap." "It’s horrifying (tệ hại) to hear," a mother said after picking up (đón) her child from school Thursday afternoon.
