"Gum-shoe" nghĩa là gì?

"Đây chắc chắn là vật hung thủ đánh rơi." Photo by Noelle Otto from Pexels

"Gumshoe" từ lóng chỉ thám tử/ đội điều tra/ cảnh sát điều tra. Ngoài ra "gum-shoe" cũng nói đến kiểu dáng đế giày êm, nhẹ, làm bằng cao su.

Ví dụ
Many of their cases have a sad ending. They are gumshoe investigators (điều tra viên), not miracle workers. They must write and read, and write and read. Unique and interesting, a detective’s day is never just another day.

True to form, the Horseshoe Bay police department botches (làm hỏng) the investigation (cuộc điều tra), loses track of Josh, and creates another mystery (bí ẩn). Nancy and her gumshoe crew ponder (suy nghĩ) how Josh procured the rare poison (chất độc hiếm), White Baneberry, in the first place.

Launched (ra mắt) on PC VR headsets back in 2017, L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files takes a few missions (nhiệm vụ) from the original L.A. Noire (2011) and lets players gumshoe around 1940s Los Angeles through a VR adaptation (phỏng theo) of the game’s clue gathering (thu thập manh mối), witnesses interrogation (thẩm vấn nhân chứng), and high-speed car chases.

"Shoe polish" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by andres chaparro from Pexels

"Shoe polish" = xi đánh giày. Nghĩa khác là một loại rượu whiskey.

Ví dụ
Negroamaro offers herbs (thảo mộc), red and blue fruit, licorice (cam thảo) and tar, plus a curious note of shoe polish that is very characteristic (đặc trưng) of its wines.

You can find a slew of videos online addressing this, along with wild stories about how to use coffee, tea, shoe polish, and other mysterious stuff (thứ bí ẩn) to make a guitar look old. And, of course, the web is full of DIY relic (vết tích) photos.

For everyday quaffing (nốc cạn một hơi), this cabernet sauvignon-merlot (rượu vang nho trắng và đen) blend is a fantastic buy. It’s classic Bordeaux, with an earthy nose displaying scents of blackberry, graphite (than chì), cedar (cây tuyết tùng) and dried rose petals. Flavors of saddle leather (da yên ngựa), blueberries, saline (mặn như muối) and shoe polish – Kiwi black – fill out the palate (lấp đầy khẩu vị).

"Play the race card" nghĩa là gì?

"Play the race card" = viện cớ, cáo buộc người khác phân biệt giới tính khi sự thật không phải vậy.

Ví dụ
Generally, I try as much as possible not to play the gender card. This is because nobody gives you anything in life; you have got to take it, period!

One reason the African American people are in even tougher shape than much of the rest of the 99% of us is that, sadly, they have often allowed black politicians to play the “race card” to avoid their responsibility to the African American community.

"Actually, from the past to the present, the relationship we have between the races has always been great. It is just that politicians always play the (race) card and undermine our unity. They are not putting enough effort and always unable to finish a task," commented another person.

"Play to the crowd" nghĩa là gì?

"Play to the crowd" = Chơi giữa đám đông -> Chơi, hành động hoặc cư xử đúng cách người ta/khán giả/mọi người muốn; đáp ứng được thị hiếu tầm thường/khán giả khó tính nhất.

Ví dụ
However, if there ever was a kid who didn’t need a reminder of that it’s the young sophomore (học sinh năm thứ 2) from High Point. Plenty of the top wrestlers in Atlantic City like to play to the crowd, talk a big game and go through their own histrionics (đóng kịch, đạo đức giả, có vẻ đóng kịch). That’s not Soldano’s way.

Hitchcock acknowledges, “This is a recent composition of ours written by Graham Russell. It’s a beautiful love song — a love story — called ‘I Adore You.’” Walking around the stage as they sing and play to the crowd and to each other, the two musicians share the lead on this gorgeous folk-rocker which features an intricate (rắc rối, phức tạp) Aaron Mclain guitar solo.

It didn’t seem like Simpson was joking but he’s not always easy to read. He doesn’t typically play to the crowd though. He has crazy hops, but it wasn’t until Michigan’s last home game, a week ago, that he dunked for the first time in a college game. “Sometimes I can be so locked in, I just think about getting the two points,” he said. He hopes to dunk again on Thursday (6:30 tip time, FS1).

"Soft power" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Austin Distel on Unsplash

"Soft power" nghĩa là quyền lực mềm, là dùng khả năng giành được những thứ mình muốn thông qua việc gây ảnh hưởng để khiến người khác làm theo. Đặc điểm của quyền lực này là thực hiện thông qua sự hấp dẫn và thuyết phục, không ép buộc.

Ví dụ
Soft power is defined as a persuasive approach to international relations and diplomacy (ngoại giao) that doesn’t involve coercion (sự ép buộc) and trades on a country’s cultural and economic influence.

Hallyu, or the ‘Korean wave’ of culture, has been a deliberate tool of soft power. South Korea isn’t alone in this; many countries invest in cultural councils and exchanges partly to strengthen diplomatic aims.

According to Dan Shah, Director of Research at the British Council, ‘soft power is an area where we benefit from a position at the top of world tables’. The report, which presents a comparison of the soft power of the UK and six other ‘soft power superpowers’ – China, Germany, India, Japan, Russia and the USA – provides an in-depth look at the current status of UK soft power, and areas for improvement.

"Play the hand is dealt" nghĩa là gì?

"Play the hand (one) is dealt" = Chấp nhận, giải quyết hoặc tận dụng mọi tình huống/cơ hội có được; tận dụng theo khả năng mình có.

Ví dụ
A substantive appointment is in the offing at Treasury with President Uhuru Kenyatta forced to play the hand he is dealt with following the arraignment (buộc tội, tố cáo) of CS Henry Rotich.

Ultimately, Khan must play the hand he is dealt which in this case is a minority government. He should focus his efforts on pushing economic reforms (cải cách kinh tế) through collaboration instead of consolidating political power.

While most dispensary operators would welcome additional space, members of the cannabis industry know that it’s important to play the hand you are dealt. With all their experience and ideas, Sanders and Williams have big plans, but they’ll have to work with what they have for now, which will likely turn out just fine for the retail and cannabis veterans (người từng dùng/thử cần sa). “We would have loved to make the store bigger, but we made the most of the space we have, in terms of design aesthetic (thẩm mỹ) and customer experience,” said Williams.

"Play the dozens" nghĩa là gì?

"Play/shoot the dozens (hàng tá)" = Thi đấu/chơi trò nói xấu, lăng mạ và sỉ nhục họ hàng của nhau (thường là về mẹ mình) trước mặt nhiều người. Kiểu câu không quá nặng hay không quá thô lỗ. Nhất là ở cộng đồng châu Phi/những người Mỹ gốc Phi.

Ví dụ
We’re learning how to play the dozens on what may be the funniest episode of Black-ish yet!

By default you can play the dozens of titles Valve has whitelisted, but checking that magical "Enable Steam Play for all other titles" box blasts the door wide open. Still, there's a bit of anxiety involved in plunking down your hard-earned money for what could technically be considered a gamble. Especially titles that employ nasty DRM or use anti-cheat hooks like Easy Anti-Cheat.

Now, after 1960, when we got moving, they couldn't say we were lazy and dumb and apathetic (thờ ơ, lãnh đạm) and all that anymore so they got sophisticated and started to play the dozens with us. They called conferences about our mamas and told us that's why we were where we were at. Some people were sitting up there talking with Johnson while he was talking about their mamas. I don't play the dozens with white folks (người da trắng). To set the record straight, the reason we are in the bag we are in isn't because of my mama, it's because of what they did to my mama. That's why I'm where I'm at. We have to put the blame where it belongs. The blame does not belong on the oppressed but on the oppressor, and that's where it is going to stay.

"Invest my time in something" nghĩa là gì?

Tập trung nào, mai thi rồi Photo by from Pexels

'Invest one's time in something' = dành nhiều nỗ lực, thời gian để hoàn thành mục tiêu hoặc nhiệm vụ.

Ví dụ
While Jackson found the words flowed, she was stymied in landing an agent. After 35 rejections – the average is 80, she noted – Jackson decided to self-publish – to invest her time in creating stories rather than getting a contract.

“I’ve had to learn not to take life and my job so seriously and invest my time in other things that make me more happy. I think I’ve finally found that balance and these guys have helped me through it, because of the relationships we’ve built.’’

“Time management is very important in life. People who know the value of time only succeed in life. So students should invest their time in creativity and innovations. At the same time, they should also learn to live independently. They should not depend on others to wash their clothes, clean their rooms etc. Self-serving mentality (tâm lý tự phục vụ) is makes a person disciplined (kỉ luật) and result oriented,” he said.

"Play telephone tag" nghĩa là gì?

"Play telephone/phone tag" = Gọi điện liên tục cho ai nhưng toàn đúng lúc người đó bận, rồi lúc người đó gọi lại thì mình lại không bắt máy được.

Ví dụ
I miss Ms. Sadie. I want to call her like I used to and play telephone tag until we reached one another. I am constantly grappling with the sadness of unfinished business and stories untold that comes with a life extinguished before her time.

Rather than replacing workers with automation, app-based platforms actually can empower the men and women on site by helping them to be more productive, Mr. Frinault explains. They don’t have to run to the site office or play telephone tag for instructions if the job details are just a swipe away.

Maybe some people are afraid. What are you going to do? Just try it. They interview you and everything and then they explain the whole system to you. When I first started it wasn’t on the computer, it was all phone calls. You play telephone tag and you finally connect and they’ve already got another ride. With the computer, it’s so efficient. There’s always someone if you have questions or if there is a problem, there is always someone you can talk to and they’re very helpful.

"Invest in myself" nghĩa là gì?

NASA partners with 17 companies to invest in the future of Urban Air Mobility.

For me, there is no better investment than one made on one’s self. In 2020, you should invest in yourself or stand the risk of being left behind by your peers (đồng nghiệp). By investing in yourself, you will be able to stand the test of time.

We all invest in the people and things that surround us. When you go out with your friends, you’re investing in your relationship with them. Whether you spend your time posting on social media or playing video games, you’re making an investment.

One can invest in small amounts through systematic investment plans (SIP) with as little as Rs 500 every month. The catch here is you need not have to wait for a long tenure (thời kỳ) until you accumulate more money to make an investment decision. With mutual funds (quỹ tương hỗ), an investor can make optimum use (sử dụng tối ưu, tận dụng tốt nhất) of the available cash and thus maximize his/her returns (lợi nhuận).

"Play Russian roulette" nghĩa là gì?

"Play Russian roulette" = Chơi bài Rulet/cò quay Nga -> Liều làm gì; bất chấp nguy hiểm có thể xảy ra. Đây là một trò chơi rất nguy hiểm mà người chơi tự cầm súng bắn vào đầu mình, súng chỉ có một viên đạn và người chơi không biết súng sẽ nổ hay không.

Ví dụ
"Justice is not a Pandora's box that can be opened as desired to see what is hiding in it, nor a game of chance where the accused must play Russian roulette with the prosecution," Martineau's ruling says.

Nathaniel Hendren, 30, pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree involuntary manslaughter (tội ngộ sát không cố ý/vô tình) and armed criminal action for killing off-duty officer Katlyn Alix, 24, in January 2019. The pair had been playing a Russian Roulette-style game with a handgun in his apartment in Carondelet, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

In the race to slash (cắt bớt, giảm) oil prices, Russia might well succeed in undercutting both the United States and Saudi Arabia and riding out the financial shock waves far better than Wall Street or Riyadh, Ford suggested. "Both the United States and Saudi would do well to remember that you should never play Russian roulette with a Russian. They invented the game," Ford warned.

"Water power" nghĩa là dạng năng lượng được tạo ra từ nguồn nước chảy.

Ví dụ
Grundfos’ Hydro MPC E water boosters which have state-of-the-art (hiện đại nhất) Grundfos MGE motors, offer IE5 class of efficiency, making them an ideal candidate for water power boosting with minimum energy consumption (sự tiêu thụ).

The company hired Jones S. Davis to design a new mill. In 1877, paying nearly $200,000, Davis built a 3-story brick textile mill with a central stair tower situated at a right angle with the granite mill. In anticipation of (để phòng bị) future expansions, he provided for twice the necessary water power.

Next to a picturesque pile on a valley cliff top in Northumberland sits the world’s first domestic hydroelectric power plant (nhà máy thủy điện). It was installed in the 1870s by armaments engineer and industrialist William, first Baron Armstrong. One historian described him as a “brilliant and inventive man who manufactured killing machinery in large quantities”. He also showed us how to live with water power.

Photo by Mike from Pexels

"For want of a nail (the shoe was lost)" hoặc " for want of a shoe the horse was lost", "for want of a horse the man was lost" có nghĩa là vì một lỗi/ mất mát nhỏ có thể gây ra hậu quả lớn.

Ví dụ
Numeroff and Bond were not telling a “for want of a nail”–type story about an endlessly slippery slope (dốc trơn trượt). They just wanted to entertain children and enjoy the absurdity (ngớ ngẩn) of animals eating human food.

It is only a matter of time before their wishful thinking that CAA will help them in the Bengal elections (cuộc bầu cử) turns out to be a mirage (ảo ảnh), despite the pathetic (thảm bại) performance of the Trinamool Congress till date. As that old proverb goes, “for want of a nail a kingdom was lost.”

Our current predicament (tình trạng khó khăn) vis-a-vis China reminds me of Benjamin Franklin’s proverb, “For the want of a nail, a kingdom was lost.” In the story, a messenger (sứ giả) sets out to warn the king that the kingdom is being invaded (xâm chiếm). But his horse throws a shoe along the way and goes lame. The rider never reaches the king with his message. The kingdom falls. Let’s not be that kingdom.

"Shoe the goose" = đi giày cho ngống -> làm cái việc vô ích, vô nghĩa.

Ví dụ
We all hate doing this job. It's shoe the goose! We are impassioned (mê hoặc) by meaningful work. We all want to make a buck; but it's not the same as making a difference.

Because of the hunter's need, I can have him do any work I wish: useful but not indispensable (cần thiết) work too painful or hazardous (nguy hiểm) for my own undertaking (công việc đảm nhận); or shoe the goose work.

At Whalley the carving (trạm khắc) of a goose fixed into the frame devised for shoeing vicious (hung dữ) horses has an explanatory inscription (khắc chữ giải thích) : 'He that meddles (can thiệp) with what man does, let him come here and shoe the goose'; in other words, waste his efforts (nỗ lực).

"Play politics" nghĩa là gì?

"Play politics" = Đàm phán chính trị; hành động vì mục đích chính trị cá nhân hơn là theo nguyên tắc/vì lợi ích chung

Ví dụ
The bottom line is public safety. Time to take politics out of keeping communities safe for everyone living in them. Who wants violent felons (người phạm tội nghiêm trọng) roaming our streets with the blessings of liberal politician? Don’t play politics with public safety.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has accused the president of “playing politics” with the virus. Trump responded by calling her “incompetent.” (người không có đủ thẩm quyền, kém cỏi) Pelosi then attempted to travel the high road, saying, “Lives are at stake. This is not a time for name-calling or playing politics.”

It goes almost without saying that it is foolhardy to play politics with a possible impending pandemic (đại dịch đang đe dọa). Rising above politics, however, is tough for politicians and almost impossible for China’s Communist rulers who always and in every way put their ideological (thuộc hệ tư tưởng) interests above all else regardless of the consequences to others.

"Walk a mile in (someone's) shoes" = đi một dặm trên đôi giày của người khác -> dành thời gian để cố gắng tìm hiểu, cân nhắc về quan điểm, năng lực, kinh nghiệm của người khác trước khi đánh giá.

Ví dụ
If you're mad at someone walk a mile in his shoes. If you're still mad, you won't kill him as you're a mile away!

The people that know and love you all are very proud of the adults that all of you children have become, and remember that we are here for you and still love you. Some people post (đăng bài viết) things not thinking of the children or the grandchildren and that just shows their ignorance (thiếu hiểu biết). Let them try walking a mile in your shoe.

“If I could be you, if you could be me for just one hour, if we could find a way to get inside each other’s mind.
If you could see you through my eyes, instead of your ego (cái tôi), I believe you’d be surprised to see that you’ve been blind.

"Play gooseberry (quả lý gai)" = đi kèm theo một cô gái để giữ gìn; đi kèm theo một cặp tình nhân để giữ gìn; kỳ đà cản mũi người ta đang hẹn hò.

Ví dụ
"All your cared about is that I'd found someone and left you behind to play gooseberry to Billy and Paul." "Eileen showing her true colours.

Ed was only too happy to play gooseberry to the pair, despite reportedly having dated former country and western singer Swift, 25, two years ago. Stocky Sheeran had earlier come face-to-face with his waxwork (hình nhân bằng sáp, vật nặn bằng sáp) at New York’s Madame Tussaud’s, approving of his likeness.

Everyday life may be full of funny moments, but it’s fair to say that most of them aren’t found during the commute to work; traffic jams (ùn tắc giao thông), roadworks and incompetent drivers raise stress levels like little else. The prospect of watching two people make small talk in a confined space as inane (ngớ ngẩn, vô nghĩa) radio jingles play gooseberry in the background doesn’t sound like a promising start for a comedy series.

"(Only the wearer knows) where the shoe pinches" =(chỉ người đi mới biết) giày chật ở chỗ nào -> khó khăn là chỗ ấy, rắc rối phiền toái là chỗ ấy.

Ví dụ
Only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches. Who can understand this better than food delivery boys who drive around the city to deliver food on time. Well, not always.

He grew from the ranks (hàng ngũ quân đội). He is an insider and he knows where the shoe pinches, so it is a good appointment (chỉ định) from Mr. President and we are very happy about it.

Only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches. For me, the winter season starts with the first whiff of cold air (luồng không khí lạnh). The first thing I pack away is my sandals and flip flops — I need to keep my feet warm with socks and shoes.

Periodical exit surveys (điều tra xuất cảnh định kỳ) of persons visiting these offices should be able to pinpoint (định vị) where the shoe pinches — outdated procedures (thủ tục lỗi thời) and haphazard (lung tung) ways of working, involving queries (chất vấn) after queries, before arriving at a decision.

"Play the wag" nghĩa là gì?

"Play (the) wag" = Ngoảnh đi, quay đi hoặc thoảng qua -> Tự vắng mặt hoặc rời đi sớm hơn so với thời gian quy định, như đi làm về/tan trường sớm hơn mấy bạn khác (trốn học).

Ví dụ
"Do you think what he's trying to do is get the liberals all mad, to get the Iranians really upset, because he's trying to play wag here?

I think no one came closer to the solution than Weekley. He did not say anything about the second half of the word, but here I have a suggestion. Scalawag may be scal-a-wag, a formation like rag-a-muffin and cock-a-doodle-doo, a compound with -a- in the middle. Wag “a mischievous person” (originally “a mischievous boy”!) is a noun in its own right; to play the wag is slang for “play the truant (trốn học, trốn tiết).” If it could be shown that scall had sufficient currency in American English (in western New York or elsewhere), a scalawag would emerge as a scabby wag, whereas diminutive horses, predial slaves (người nô lệ gắn chặt với ruộng đất), criminals wearing bells like the lepers (người hủi, người bị bệnh phong) of old, scavengers (công nhân quét đường), and their daughters will stay where they belong: in Shetlands, Hebrides, Switzerland, and France. Good riddance (sự tống khứ, sự trừ khử) if you ask me.

"Soft underbelly" nghĩa là gì?

Hóng một trận cầu đỉnh cao. Photo by Mike from Pexels

"Soft underbelly" có từ "underbelly" là phần bụng dưới, mặt dưới của cơ thể con vật. Cụm từ này có nghĩa là điểm yếu, khu vực/vùng dễ bị tấn công của một quốc gia, tổ chức, cá nhân.

Ví dụ
Chennaiyin FC, meanwhile, showed urgency (gấp rút) to keep the ball and their passing became more fluid (trôi chảy). They weren’t sharp in attack (tấn công sắc bén) but FC Goa’s soft underbelly was exposed in the second half.

It was also due to America’s drive to control Germany’s influence. At the same time, Bosnia represented (đại diện) NATO’s soft underbelly as NATO was expanding (bành trướng) eastwards against Russia – impossible to leave the area under the control of Serbia, seen as Russia’s client state (nhà nước phụ thuộc), or under Croatia, seen as Germany’s client state.

BVB also committed 14 fouls (phạm lỗi) and earned five yellow cards at Borussia-Park; perhaps not ordinarily figures to be celebrated, but for a team that has often been accused (buộc tội) of having a soft underbelly in recent years, this new steely (cứng rắn) side and ability to grind out scrappy (tranh chấp) wins are much-vaunted (ca ngợi nhiều) hallmarks of champions.

"Soft sell" = (cách) bán hàng nhẹ nhàng, lịch sự, không phô trương, không quảng cáo rầm rộ.

Ví dụ
ENCOMIUM, a media, tech and events company, publishes (xuất bản) ENCOMIUM Weekly, Nigeria’s most authentic (chính xác) soft-sell magazine (since May 27, 1997).

An effective case study makes readers want to learn more about the product it features. It’s a soft sell designed to lure your prospects (lôi kéo khách hàng tiềm năng) into requesting more detailed information. If you’ve mirrored the reader’s problem successfully, the case study will propel (đẩy) them deeper into the sales funnel (phễu bán hàng) and closer to buying.

Marketers are going to have to rethink mobile advertising strategy (chiến lược quảng cáo trên điện thoại) if they plan to utilize TikTok as a platform (nền tảng). “On Instagram, it’s a lot of buy this, buy that, use my promo code,” said TikTok influencer Alejandro Bogliari. “But on TikTok, it’s about being funny and entertaining. You put the product inside a video and do a soft sell.”

"Soft pedal (something)" có từ mới "pedal" nghĩa là cái bàn đạp trên chiếc xe đạp hay trong đàn dương cầm, để điều khiển những cử động hoặc âm thanh theo ý mình muốn. Vì thế người Mỹ dùng "soft pedal khi muốn nói là họ làm nhẹ bớt tầm quan trọng của một điều gì.

Ví dụ
Many American presidents have soft-pedaled the brutality (hành động tàn ác) of their Cold War (chiến tranh lạnh) allies (đồng minh) and have continued this ugly tradition into the modern era with the Gulf Kingdoms.

"Dead and buried" nghĩa là gì?

Biển này có ý gì thế? Photo courtesy: Martin Bartholmy

"Dead and buried" = chết và đã chôn -> sự việc đã hoàn thành, chấm dứt; không còn được sử dụng.

Ví dụ
Many people think slavery is dead and buried but it still goes on in some parts of the world.

However, the sideways step by Western Digital into data centre systems under Milligan’s leadership, looks dead and buried. This led to acquisitions (thu nhận được) of companies like Tegile and Amplidata and then the sale of the resulting data centre systems assets. IntelliFlash went to DDN and ActiveScale went to Quantum.

It's Thatcher's legacy which plays an especially important role in the popularity of these memes, particularly as many of those who create, share or like memes about the politician's death were born after her premiership (nhiệm kỳ thủ tướng) ended. Amelia, a young Labour activist who has created Thatcher death memes before, says she thinks people her age feel its generational impact from their parents. “For a lot of us, disliking Thatcher is the logical conclusion," she says. "Two generations of hurt can be traced back. That’s not easy to forgive. You can dispute (tranh luận) whatever claims they make regarding current, living left-wingers; you can’t dispute the fact Margaret Thatcher is dead and buried."
