...South Korea’s most effective weapon (vũ khí lợi hại nhất) against the virus has been to rapidly expand testing (mở rộng xét nghiệm nhanh chóng). It is are now testing 15,000 people a day, according to government figures (số liệu do chính quyền công bố); 210,000 South Koreans have been tested since Jan. 3, compared to about 6,500 tests completed in the United States by Tuesday morning.

Some of South Korea’s measures have been controversial (gây tranh cãi). For example, people who are confirmed (xác nhận) to have coronavirus are tracked (bị theo dõi) by GPS, and a live map of their locations (without their names) is available for anyone wishing to avoid them. That may seem invasive (xâm lược, xâm chiếm, xâm lấn)...

...To stop the export of the virus, South Korea has implemented a three-step detection system at Incheon International Airport, with extra screening measures for passengers headed to the United States. Seoul wants to give other countries confidence they can keep doing business with South Korea and admitting South Koreans

"Catch some rays" nghĩa là gì?

Đi hấp thụ chút vitamin D. Photo by Lara Santos from Pexels

"Catch/bag/grab some rays" nghĩa là tắm nắng. Từ "ray" ý chỉ tia nắng.

Ví dụ
Bikini-clad (đồ bơi) women and men sporting swimming shorts are shown relaxing on their beach towels as they bag some rays.

On good days, we get some respite (nghỉ ngơi) when they nap, Ailise may catch a few rays of sun on the terrace (sân thượng) where she sets up a picnic and invents her own games.

I observe (quan sát) Squeaky the squirrel (sóc) emerge from his nest to catch some rays and grab a snack from his personal stockpile (kho dự trữ) inside the owl house my husband built for me several years ago.

There was a wooden bridge — not arched (cong), but straight — that spanned (bắc qua) the pool. Swimmers could walk from one side to the other. Or if in the water, could go under the bridge. Or they could climb up (it wasn’t very high) and sit there to grab some rays.

The church was consequently (là hậu quả của) closed and all its believers who attended the prayer sessions are being tested.

The new cases have fuelled the South Korean government’s vigilance (cảnh giác, thận trọng, đề phòng) to detect (phát hiện) new virus clusters, especially in city areas, even as it has managed to slow the spread of infections.

"Make a grab at" nghĩa là gì?

"Make a grab at (someone or something)" = cố nắm lấy ai/cái gì -> cố gắng đạt được điều gì.

Ví dụ
So out of my corner I stretched (vươn ra) a long shadow arm, reaching all across the ceiling (trần nhà), and pretended to make a grab at him.

When the penny (đồng xu) went in you could make the hand slide out across the turntable (bàn xoay), then propel (đẩy) it down to make a grab at the toys.

I mean, when starving (đói) people see you gobbling (ngấu nghiến) down food all by yourself, you know one of them will make a grab at it. So don't provoke (khiêu khích) them - don't air your clothes at the window!

Ambrose, the Hennwife's revolting (kinh tởm) Pekinese, he could make a grab at any time – a satisfactory consequence (kết quả thỏa đáng), this, of the fact that the Hennwifes now chose to regard Ambrose and himself as having about equal rights (quyền ngang nhau) in the house at large.

"Goober grabber" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by shattha pilabut from Pexels

"Goober grabber" nghĩa là người thu hoạch đậu phộng. "Goober" là tên gọi khác của động phộng/lạc (peanut) của người Georgia, từ này còn dùng để phân biệt người Georgia với người vùng khác.

Ví dụ
Georgian Confederate soldiers (lính) were often snidely (cạnh khóe) called "goober grabbers." Calling someone a goober today isn't a compliment (lời khen), but there's usually some affection (tác động) involved.

Before the Civil War (Nội Chiến) era Goober-grabber was a common nickname for a backwoods (vùng rừng xa xôi hẻo lánh) Georgian, but it was also applied to Alabamians, and the simple Goober was a nickname for North Carolinians.

The nicknames that do survive (tồn tại) are mostly associated with college sports teams. Television has carried those far and wide. But TV, the most ubiquitous (khắp nơi) venue of popular culture (văn hóa đại chúng) before the internet, has also done much to homogenize (đồng nhất hóa) American English, scrubbing away at accents and regionalisms (từ ngữ địa phương). Prune-pickers (Californians), Boll weevils (Texans), Goober-grabbers (Georgians) and Muskrats (Delawarean) might be ok with that.

"I love you to the moon and back" có nghĩa là bạn rất yêu người nào.

We love you to the moon and back. Thank you all, he couldn't have done it without you. Love you.

Sharing the picture, Shilpa wrote, "Your first milestone (cột mốc), my princess SAMISHA... Happy One month to you. Love you to the moon and back... (sic)."

He added, “You are the most beautiful, intelligent (thông minh), thoughtful (chu đáo), caring, incredible human and I couldn’t be more excited to do life with you. Here’s to forever and making our wildest dreams come true. Love you to the moon and back.”

Wes said he felt helpless when his grandmother, 73-year-old Arlene "Lee Lee" Tellis, was diagnosed (được chuẩn đoán) with stage 4 pancreatic cancer (ung thư tuyến tụy) in August. Already into drawing shoe and logo designs, he threw himself into creation (sáng tạo) of the sneaker that honors (tôn vinh) his grandmother's favorite words to him: "I love you to the moon and back."

"Tilt the balance" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Limor Zellermayer on Unsplash

"Tilt the balance" nghĩa là thay đổi sự cân bằng của một tình huống, ví dụ như một bên hoặc yếu tố được ưa chuộng hoặc đạt lợi thế hơn.

Ví dụ
A public financing plan that provides tax credits to people who make small donations—but not to those who make large contributions—could help tilt the balance in favor of “small money.” A plan that also matches small donations would go even farther.

As an ex-Kerry footballer who has seen Donie Buckley's coaching acumen (sự nhạy bén) up close and personal, Kieran Donaghy has no doubt he's a loss to the Kingdom. But is it a game-changer? A departure that could tilt the balance in favour of Dublin if it boils down to another Sam Maguire shootout between the pair?

By maintaining the current, historically high influx of immigrants, the plan would continue to tilt the balance heavily in favor of employers. Companies wouldn’t feel any pressure to raise wages. According to Harvard economist George Borjas, when the number of workers in a particular labor pool — such as college graduates — rises 10 percent due to immigration, wages for American workers in that group drop more than 3 percent.

In the Trump era, the Powell Fed is refilling it at the behest of a ruler with zero regard for institutional checks and balances or the basic tenets of capitalism. Call it Trumponomics, with Chinese characteristics.

The solution arrived at in our Constitution was to create a powerful government, but to separate its powers so no one person or faction could wield that power alone. There would be checks and balances throughout the system, a precaution Madison viewed as “necessary to control the abuses of government.”

No doubt influenced by his own years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps and years of scholarship as a foreign policy expert, Rep. Gallagher recognizes that Congress has ceded too much authority to the executive branch on national security and is a key voice in the burgeoning bipartisan (thuộc về lưỡng đảng) effort to restore checks and balances.

The report is due to be discussed by councillors (hội viên hội đồng) at Woodhill House next week. Aberdeenshire Council leader Jim Gifford said their budget proposals show the “challenge” they face as they attempt to balance the books.

We are on track to slightly better than balance the books and we do know that period 11 is looking pretty good as well. We are now pretty much at the end of the financial year, so I would not expect that to change very much, it will get a little bit better so I think we can say with some confidence that we will balance the books this year.

"Weigh (something) in the balance" = đưa lên bàn cân -> cụm từ này nghĩa là xem xét cả mặt tích cực và tiêu cực của một cái gì đó rất cẩn thận, đặc biệt là khi đưa ra quyết định.

Ví dụ
The Minister was entitled to (được quyền) have regard to these important factors and to weigh them in the balance, with the evidence, when coming to his decision.

This gives us an empirical basis for evaluating cryptography (mật mã) bans: we can actually take steps to quantify the costs and benefits of Barr's proposal and weigh them in the balance.

“For every 100 questions I have, maybe for 70 I get answers, for 20 I find partial insights, and the balance I don’t have answers for. But I expect that. I expect that a mortal, who must have faith, is going to have some questions that he can’t answer. “I think it's important to vote so that you get your say, and you can chose what you want your future Manitoba to look like,” said Dominik.

“It was good, it feels like I can actually put my opinion out there and get my say,” said Taylor. If people that are Taylor’s age — born between the mid 1990s and early 2000s, also considered Generation Z — continue to show up they have the power to determine who is in power and also what kind of government will be voted in.

“I was fine with that. But I wanted to have my say in court so I could put all this on paper. I did not get my say in court,” she said. “I did not get my say in Magistrate Court. The caliber 9R01 is regulated by Grand Seiko's proprietary Spring Drive regulator, which uses a quartz crystal and a steadily rotating flywheel instead of a standard balance wheel to keep the time.

The manually wound movement holds a 55-hour power reserve and features an extra-large balance wheel, a traditional 18,000-vph balance frequency, a column wheel with horizontal coupling, a patented V-shaped chronograph bridge — all signature elements of vintage Minerva calibers, along with the hand-decorated Minerva arrow on the bridge.

"Balance (something) with (something else)" nghĩa là cân bằng hai điều gì, cái gì; trung hòa cái này bằng một cái nào đó khác.

Ví dụ
“Some of our communities have multiple towers and we’d certainly like to balance them with some rentals and for-sale condos.”

Psychologist (nhà tâm lý học) Paul Sciberras said he too had seen patients discussing their worries about the virus. He stressed it was important that they have a space to express their fears but to balance them with rational (có lý) facts.

We live in a society with rules, and our little kiddos have brains that don’t intuitively or physiologically play by those rules. Like I helped my client to develop a give and take with his wife, we have to help our kids understand how to compromise (dàn xếp, thỏa hiệp) — not to turn off their brilliant, silly, energetic, emotional brains, but rather to balance them with everyone else’s idea of “quality function.” Why? Because maybe, just maybe, happiness lies somewhere in the middle for everyone.

"Get her onside" nghĩa là gì?

"Get/keep (them) onside (ở vào vị trí có thể chơi hợp lệ)" = Có được/giữ được sự ủng hộ, tán thành của ai.

Ví dụ
Kiwis took to Facebook to make light of Bridges' situation, with some saying it could win him the election. "His politics might appeal to the wealthy, but his latest social move could get him onside with the hip voters," one person joked.

One downside to meeting people on apps is you can’t be sure if they are completely legit (chính đáng, hợp lệ). Preece suggests that when you’re building a connection with someone there are certain things to look out for which may indicate they’re not the one. He advised that fake profiles will only have one or two pictures, so the person is difficult to identify and when you’re messaging they’ll say anything to get you onside. They may ask for money and get angry if they don’t get what they want quickly. Needless to say, block and delete.

Don't turn against her during this stressful and unsettling time, but rather get her onside and reassure her that you have her back. Then both of you do some legwork and research the virus, and reach out to people and organisations that will help (e.g. family GP). Armed with this greater information, then together you can decide on how to move forward as a team. Once you've agreed on this, keep checking in with one another on a daily basis to find out how you're both coping, and also what action steps you've taken. This way you can create a team response that is informed and constantly being monitored.

Ví dụ
Having determined that you were in fact active for that week, most guys would then start getting their ankles taped. How they got them taped always varied, but I never saw many guys who didn't get them taped at all.

"A lot of times when I show up on a call it's cops and mostly guys. And they're like, "Texas Parks and Wildlife sent you?' They kind of doubt me at first until I really get them taped and ready to go," Krobroth said.

"Get tongue around" nghĩa là gì?

"Get (one's) tongue around" = Uốn, cong/xoay lưỡi -> Chỉ khả năng có thể phát âm được từ khó.

Ví dụ
Say it with us: kartoffelpuffer (bánh kếp khoai tây). Even if you can’t get your tongue around the pronunciation, you’ll definitely want to stick a fork into these fried discs of starchy (có tinh bột) goodness. Serve with a side of vegan sour cream and/or applesauce (táo dấm đường).

Manju says the team worked on the look of the character, who goes through three different age groups. “I observed women in the area to understand how they wore the sari and how they walked, sat and spoke. Imbibing those things took some time. The Thirunelveli dialect (tiếng địa phương) was tough to get my tongue around. Although I speak Tamil, I’m used to the commonly-spoken urban Tamil. There were many words that I haven’t heard at all! I had to work on the intonations, pronunciation and the like,” she says.

Yeah, try saying that three times fast. Your tongue will be twisted from now to Halloween. If you can’t get your tongue around it even once, don’t worry about it. I can’t either. But, what I can pronounce is its common name: poison oak. Not only can I pronounce it but I can recognize it so I am left to wonder: If I can say it and I can recognize it when I see it and I know enough to not touch, rub or roll in it how the heck did I manage to get it all over my body? I dunno but I did. And as with all other causes-unknown mysteries, I’m blaming my husband. It’s ridiculous, pointless and in no way helpful to resolving the constant wide spread itching but it does give me someone to blame.
