"An axe hanging over" nghĩa là gì?

Nếu hết khẩu trang, hãy thử cách khác Photo by cottonbro from Pexels

'An axe hanging over someone or something' = (người) bị đe dọa/có nguy cơ bị sa thải; (vật) có nguy cơ bị phá hủy hoặc kết thúc sớm.

Ví dụ
If this system was used today, Gold Coast, Manly and the Bulldogs would be the three sides with an axe hanging over their heads.

Sources also say the fourth-generation Mini range is likely to shrink, with an axe hanging over future versions of the cabriolet (xe mui trần) and the three-door hatchback.

We thought Brooks would have been fired (sa thải) at the end of last season, so the fact that he stuck around this long is already a surprise. Considering the ax hanging over him, we won’t be surprised if he’s the first NBA coach to be fired during the 2019-20 season.

Managers such as Jim McInally, boss at Peterhead for more than seven years, and, in the Premiership, Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes and Tommy Wright of St Johnstone, with five years plus of service, are very much the exception in an occupation where the spectre of an axe hanging over heads looms ever large (hiện ra rõ nét).

"Pared to the bone" nghĩa là gì?

Mọi giao dịch được thực hiện online là đủ Photo by ThisIsEngineering from Pexels

'Pare (something) to the bone' = giảm, cắt giảm một cách đáng kể.

Ví dụ
This is a key part of the People’s Assembly’s strategy in challenging the orthodoxy (tính chính thống) that there is no alternative to the continued cutting of services that are already pared to the bone.

The first of 75 customer cars are rumoured (đồn đoán) to be completed late this year. At US$1.8 million, it’s more like a dream than a real thing, but it’s a useful reminder that sports cars are infinitely better when pared to the bone. Other cars deserving honorable mentions this year are the Polestar 1, BMW M2 Competition, Audi RS6, Porsche 718 Spyder, and Peugeot’s lovely e-Legend concept.

Competition law is struggling to come to grips with the internet. Web platforms have an incentive to pursue growth over profits. They operate on the basis that long-term customer lock-in is far more strategically important than the short-term benefits of quarterly profits. This often leads them to pare prices to the bone so as to maximize customer growth—behaviour that would ordinarily have attracted the attention of the competition regulator.

"Make allowance for" nghĩa là gì?

Mùa dịch nên làm việc tại nhà Photo by Polina Zimmerman

'Make allowance(s) for someone or something' = chuẩn bị đầy đủ, xem xét, tính đến cái gì khi đưa ra quyết định; chiếu cố, tha thứ hay chấp nhận ai trong một số trường hợp đặc biệt.

Ví dụ
Kipling's lead notes, "If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you. If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too......You'll be a man my son."

One thing about the Covid-19 pandemic (dịch bệnh) is that it is forcing companies to rethink the virtue and necessity of allowing people to work from home. Even bosses who are control freaks (người thích kiểm soát) have to make allowance for such work flexibility in times of crisis.

In view of the large current-account deficits (thâm hụt) that will inevitably accumulate, CBCS sees no other option than to make allowance for the countries to deviate from (lệch khỏi) the financial standards laid down in the Kingdom Law on Financial Supervision of Curaçao and St. Maarten.

"Get riled up" nghĩa là gì?

"Get riled up" = Bị chọc tức/phát cáu.

Ví dụ
“He likes to get riled up and play,” Fountain said. “Sometimes, with the keepers, he’ll throw his head around a little bit, to show you he’s a tough rhino (tê giác). It’s just hard to take him seriously when he’s so cute.”

“The problem is when I watched it live like we all did, is he’s a politician that inspires anger really well,” McCain said. “If you want to get riled up and angry, he’s a politician who does it well. The ‘I feel your pain and fear,’ incapable of it. He could have been reading the phonebook last night. He should have been saying, ‘I understand Americans are scared.’ Have a Ronald Reagan-esque moment.”

And while Englander has been accused of accepting envelopes of cash and the services of an escort, the indictment (sự truy tố, buộc tội) does not say that Lee or any other city official also received those things, she said. “Prostitutes (mại dâm, sự bán rẻ danh dự/tên tuổi) make a difference in an election. Cold cash makes a difference,” Feng said. “Sad to say, I don’t know if voters get riled up” about potential violations of gift laws, she said.

"Get even with" nghĩa là gì?

"Get even (ngang bằng) with" = Trả thù lại ai (khiến họ chịu nỗi đau tương tự như họ đã gây ra cho mình)

Ví dụ
Who could she want to get even with? Liesl and Spinelli both come to mind in this scenario.

Nathan Schwing, 40, admitted to making threats to a Crawford County Sheriff’s deputy after he was stopped for suspicion of OVI. Schwing threatened the deputy, his family and to get even with him when he was released from jail.

Tom Brooks of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, decided to get even with his ex-girlfriend Darcey Silva's twin sister Stacey and her fiancé Florian, with pictures of him and another woman who is definitly not Stacey. Tom was certainly the pot calling the kettle black when he himself has been accused of cheating on his girlfriend, Darcey Silva.

"Got to get up pretty early in the morning to do" nghĩa là gì?

"(You've) got to get up pretty early in the morning to (do something)" = Sáng phải dậy thật sớm để làm việc -> Thành công không dễ dàng đến với bạn vì yêu cầu phải có năng lực và kỹ năng nhất định.

Ví dụ
Tonya Wilbanks has been the owner of Daylight Donuts in Wagoner for some 20 years, and much like the giant rooster out front, you've got to get up pretty early in the morning to pull the wool over her eyes. "It was just a gut instinct that I had," she said.

You’ve got to get up pretty early in the morning to get one over on (vượt trội, giành lợi thế hơn ai) John Werner. Seriously. As sportswriters go, ol’ John tends to rise and shine a lot earlier than the rest of us. It’s a career built for night owls, really, given that most games (and newspaper deadlines) hit their strides in the evenings.

You’ve got to get up pretty early in the morning to be Jessica Alba. Sadly, it’s not just a turn of phrase. The actress, Honest Company founder, mom and America’s most admirable girl boss shared a peek (lén nhìn, lột vỏ) into her typical day, and it starts at 5:45 a.m. And after that? Let’s just say it’s not all crazy-adorable kids and eco-friendly lip balm.

"Get along famously with" nghĩa là gì?

Friendzone. Photo by  Yanapi Senaud

"Get along famously with" = Có mối quan hệ rất tốt đẹp/vô cùng chan hòa và sống hòa thuận với ai.

Ví dụ
Byford will stay on the job until Feb. 21. Friends told CBS his next stop may be a return to London, where, after his stint in New York, he might be in line for the top job at the London Underground. By the way, he is said to get along famously with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

I think it’s quite interesting because you know people used to say this about Manmohan Singh. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh used to get along famously with both President Bush and President Obama and now you’ve seen two American presidents engage very well with the Indian Prime Minister.

The problem here is that, even if we allow for a certain amount of hyperbole (lời nói cường điệu, ngoa dụ), the guys you’re interested in aren’t really into you and only start dating you after you’ve given them the full-court press. The problem with this is that while you two may well legitimately be friends and compatible (hợp nhau) on an emotional level, that doesn’t translate to “compatible for a relationship”. I’ve got a number of friends who I get along famously with, but if we tried to date, someone would almost certainly end up on fire before our second anniversary. Even when they’ve decided they’re cool with hooking up with you, “you know what, a blowjob would be nice tonight” doesn’t necessarily mean that you two have what it takes for a successful relationship. And if they’re someone who’s conflict averse, doesn’t have as strong of a personality or isn’t good at enforcing their boundaries, then it’s entirely possible to end up running roughshod over them (hà hiếp áp chế, chà đạp họ).

"Get a second breath" nghĩa là gì?

"Get a/(one's) second breath" = Lấy hơi thở lần hai -> Có thể thở bình thường trở lại/lấy lại năng lượng sau một quá trình mệt mỏi.

Ví dụ
“It was a hard shift, and we found it hard to get a second breath in that first half,” Botes said.“We tried to stick to our structure, and had a get together at half-time to say we needed to revert back to what we have been training for over the past six weeks.

The 18 percent Saturday jump for “Widows” isn’t great for an adult film. And with “Creed 2” and “Green Book” either opening or widening this weekend, it appears unlikely that this will get a second breath. That’s sad: This was a different kind of film, and it fell far short. This will be noticed.

It was a relief to come through the first training session, let alone the first game. Especially when it was coming to 35, 50 minutes on the clock and I had a look up and I was breathing hard. ‘You think: “Ten minutes still to go here, Scott, try to get a touch of the ball and try to kid on you’re still looking forward to passing.” But it was hard. ‘Everyone’s first game back is always exactly the same, it takes five, 10 minutes to get into the game and then you have to get your second breath and then you can kick on from there.’

"Get a yen for" nghĩa là gì?

Get a yen for LOVE. Photo by  Kelly Sikkema

"Get a yen for" = Thèm thuồng/khát khao.

Ví dụ
When Americans get a yen for chocolate bars, they find no better source for their craving (sự thèm thuồng) than convenience stores. In fact, recent sales data gathered from retail channels indicate convenience stores accounted for even a bigger share of chocolate candy sales in 2018.

Many people – at one point or another in their life – get a yen for adventure. A desire to push at the boundaries of their life and try something radically different. For Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) instrument and calibration (sự định cỡ, hiệu chuẩn) lead Derek Murtagh, that desire took him to Australia. BMS and his girlfriend brought him back.

Sometimes, I just get a yen for a well-made curry, and nothing else will do. So I wanted to share my own curry recipe with all of you out there who get the same itch. Here’s the answer—a white fish curry that, believe me, is simply kick-ass. Caution your guests not to eat the star anise or green cardamom (bột gia vị bạch đậu khấu) pods as the heat of both is intense.

"Get a toehold" nghĩa là gì?

"Get a toehold" = Có bước đệm/vị thế ổn định có thể dẫn đến thành công.

Ví dụ
More long term, Nathan also says the military has a number of research centers around the world that specialize in disease surveillance (sự giám sát) "before they can get a toehold on our troops,” including in Egypt, Peru and Singapore.

This quintet (bộ năm) of firms have powerful insights to share on how they've built lucrative revenue streams around G-Cloud, where they've gone wrong, and what advice they would have for budding suppliers looking to get a toehold on the framework.

The other end of the spectrum (mật độ)? They tend to be notoriously (lừng danh, khét tiếng) high-priced metros like Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco, which basically require buyers to take out harder-to-obtain jumbo loans to get a toehold in the real estate market (thị trường bất động sản). While the threshold (ngưỡng cửa, bước đầu) differs from county to county, many mortgages (vật cầm cố, tài sản thế chấp) in such places are too big to be sold under Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. They start at $484,350 and require a minimum of 20% down.

"Get a taste for" nghĩa là gì?

"Get a taste for" = Có vị giác với điều gì/muốn nếm thử ->  Có sự ưa thích/ưu tiền; sở thích, thị hiếu về.

Ví dụ
STUDENTS at a Keighley school have been getting a taste for how to cook Italian food. Holy Family pupils were visited by staff from Keighley restaurant Ponte Vecchio, who demonstrated the preparation and cooking of some typical dishes.

Now that NIS America has dropped a demo for The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III, which is finally heading to PC on March 23. So, I decided to sit down with it and get a taste for myself. After playing the demo, it’s clear that, even though this is the third iteration (lặp lại), the game will offer new combat elements to keep the familiar saga from growing stale.

Capcom has released a demo of Resident Evil 3 for fans and, unlike the Resident Evil 2 demo which had a one-hour time limit and only allowed for one attempt before locking you out, you can replay this demo as often as you like. This is a relief because the demo is significantly shorter than an hour, I was actually done within thirteen minutes on my first playthrough and only fifteen minutes with the extra exploration of the map, but is that enough to get a taste for what Resident Evil 3 has to offer?

"Get a roasting" nghĩa là gì?

"Get a roasting" = Nhận sự chế nhạo; lời giễu cợt cay độc.

Ví dụ
Moment Kate Garraway and Ranvir Singh get a roasting from Good Morning Britain producers after disrupting Martin Lewis' money segment to 'have a little chat'.

Why we have to wise up to waste! Supermarkets, coffee chains and Amazon all get a roasting from Hugh Fearnley- Whittingstall in a new episode of War On Waste - but there is hope, he says.

He's sported green hair as the Joker and perfected the man bun (búi tóc). But Jared Leto's loose and lustrous (bóng láng, chói ngời) locks were garnering the most attention, as he posted a selfie to Instagram this week. The 47-year-old got roasted in the comments by actor Zach Braff and comedian David Spade after he shared a snap which showcased his shiny long hair.

"Get a can on" nghĩa là gì?

"Get a can on" = Làm một lon -> Say rượu.

Ví dụ
Do you come under that rare category of people who drink like a tanker and still never get a can on?

“The feeling when you are going to get a can on home alone in your underwear with no intention of going out.”

“The vast amount of contact I have with people playing shows makes me the most dangerous person in the room especially because I am also singing and spraying spit for hours at a time,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “In the bars people get a can on and say ‘f--- the virus’ then they want to hug and kiss on you/me. The prevailing attitude becomes an insensitive petri dish of disdain (sự khinh thị) and complacency (tính tự mãn) that does not adhere to the decency of simple respect for fellow citizens, therefore I plan on starting some live online shows in this brave new world which I will announce accordingly.

"Beggar belief" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Yi Liu on Unsplash

"Beggar belief" = niềm tin của kẻ ăn xin -> nghĩa là không thể tin được, khó diễn tả thành lời.

Ví dụ
The long and short of it is that the Government should be making it easier for veterans (cựu chiến binh), service personnel, and their families to connect with one another and access peer-led mental health (sức khỏe tinh thần) support. It is beggar’s belief that people who have risked their lives for us are being let down. Accessing mental health support is a battle they should not have to fight.

"We've asked for pins (provisional (tạm thời) improvement notice) on building sites where laws are being breached (phá) and every time they come up with an excuse (cái cớ). "It beggar's belief that after one so called breach by protesters they get a notice." Mr Cocker has been contacted for comment.

The only evidence required to overturn (lật đổ) it was contained in video footage lasting less than one minute! It really does beggar belief that our governing (quản trị) body (nhóm) can get something so wrong. I genuinely feel for SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell who is now trying to right a wrong that is not of his doing. Thankfully the power brokers at Hampden have seen sense and a new hearing was convened (triệu tập).

"Preach at" nghĩa là gì?

Chúng ta hầu hết, đều thích nói hơn là bị nói. Photo by Charles Deluvio on Unsplash

"Preach at/to (someone)" nghĩa là đưa ra lời khuyên thừa về giáo lý, cách cư xử... một cách lải nhải khiến người nghe khó chịu, lên lớp.

Ví dụ
I cannot begin to count (đếm) the times when a few words of encouragement (khích lệ) changed the course of events in my life. No one needed to preach to me or give me a philosophy (triết lý) of life.

As more awareness (nhận thức) about post-election night shifts (ca đêm) has spread, experts (chuyên gai) have started preaching to the media that it needs to better educate voters (giáo dục cử tri) not to expect a “winner” to be known on election night or even in the next several days.

Preaching (thuyết giảng) is an announcement (thông báo) with both certainty and authority (uy quyền). For many people today the word “preach” has negative connotations (ý nghĩa tiêu cực). Dr. Donald Miller has said that “One of the signs of the 20th century is the statement, 'don't preach at me.'

"Preach against" nghĩa là gì?

"Preach against (something)" nghĩa là đưa ra cảnh báo mạnh mẽ, nghiêm khắc chống lại điều gì.

Ví dụ
Graham has said that while he believes marriage is solely between a man and a woman, he is not preaching against anybody. He is scheduled (dự kiến) to speak at Cologne Lanxess Arena on June 20.

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) chairman (chủ tịch) responsible for religious affairs (vấn đề tôn giáo), Right Reverend Bishop George Desmond Tambala has urged Catholic nuns (nữ tu Công giáo) in the country to preach against tribalism (lòng trung thành) for the sake of (vì lợi ích) unity and peace (đoàn kết và hòa bình).

"Church pastors (mục sư) discuss witchcraft (ma thuật) regularly and preach against it all the time, drawing from their experiences (kinh nghiệm) during their training and in their ministries," Uchendu, a professor (giáo sư) of history and international studies (quốc tế học) at the university, said in response to the protests about the conference (hội nghị).

"Preach about/down (someone or something)" = thuyết giảng, giảng giải điều gì mang ý gièm pha/chỉ trích/ bôi xấu.

Ví dụ
“I burnt these churches because of anger arising from the fact that these churches preach about prosperity (thịnh vượng) but I have remained poor all throughout,” He said.

In school, they preach about anti-bullying (chống bắt nạt) but I think this is one of the biggest lies they tell. They don’t teach us how to deal with it, but if we stand up for ourselves, we’re in the wrong. There are different forms of bullying and it isn’t just hitting and punching (đánh và đấm).

“We are stuck between a rock and a hard place but I am doing what I think is best for the safety of my family. I look, listen and watch and if things don’t move quick enough then I’m prepared to do what I need to do to protect (bảo vệ) my family the best I can,” he says. “How can you preach down social distancing (cách ly xã hội), the banning of group gatherings (tụ họp nhóm) yet allow kids to go to school?”

"Not in the same class" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Brooke Lark on Unsplash

"Not in the same class" = không cùng đẳng cấp -> nghĩa là không cùng trình độ, kỹ năng hoặc chất lượng.

Ví dụ
Diggs caught the “Minnesota Miracle” touchdown bàn thắng) in the 2017 playoffs against the Saints and followed it up with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons (with 15 of his 30 career touchdowns), but he is not in the same class as Hopkins.

While the Lions are certainly not in the same class as some of the top Super Rugby sides this year, that resilience (đàn hồi) and composure (điềm tĩnh) is important for the Rebels to maintain.

Allen has shown significant improvement, but he's not in the same class as other potential (tiềm năng) AFC quarterback opponents, like Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. The Bills have a few quality wins, but they lack that signature win against an AFC elite team.

"Be preaching to the converted" nghĩa là thuyết phục, chỉ cho ai những gì mà họ đã biết quá rõ, bày cho thầy tu đọc kinh.

Ví dụ
The reaction is a mixture of positive, negative, transfixed (sững sờ), bemused (lưỡng lự). I'd been to a couple of Throbbing Gristle gigs and they were all preaching to the converted. To me, the interesting thing in life is going out there into the unconverted (không thay đổi) zone.

“We now seem to be facing the health version of global warming (nóng lên toàn cầu). Exaggeration (phóng đại) in almost everything. Certainly in description, and certainly in behaviour (hành vi).” It may be a reassuring (trấn an) message. After all, he is preaching to his converted.

What do you make of Microsoft's efforts to ensure (đảm bảo) top-notch backwards compatibility (tính tương thích) with its existing games? Do you think this will be something that the average person on the street will appreciate (đánh giá cao), or is the company simply preaching to the converted?

"A guilty conscience needs no accuser" nghĩa là gì?

"A guilty conscience needs no accuser" = lương tâm tội lỗi không cần người tố cáo -> có tật giật mình, biết mình sai nên luôn thấp thỏm lo lắng, dễ chột dạ.

Ví dụ A guilty conscience needs no accuser. This is bolting the gate when the horses have left the stable (hành động lúc này là quá muộn). The corruption (tham nhũng) will continue unabated (không suy giảm).

A guilty conscience needs no accuser,’ is an old adage (ngạn ngữ) that fits well with what recently transpired (diễn ra) in cotton trading contracts (hợp đồng giao dịch) at the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX).

He knows what he is doing, and he is calculated (tính toán). What he does matches who he is. He is a predator (lợi dụng người khác). He is befriending (giúp đỡ) all of these parents to have access to their kids. He didn’t help them. He made them worse. A guilty conscience needs no accuser. When you’re telling him he is guilty, you are telling him something he already knows.
