"Prevention is better than cure" nghĩa là gì?

Quyết tâm chiến thắng đại dịch! Photo by Min An from Pexels

"Prevention is better than cure" = phòng bệnh hơn chữa bệnh.

Ví dụ
It was a short work trip to Kyrgyzstan. I went there for a music video. The whole world is having trouble (gặp rắc rối) with the corona virus and one should take proper precautions (biện pháp phòng ngừa đúng đắn) to avoid any issue. Prevention is better than cure.

While speaking with us, Kiran said, "I believe, prevention is better than cure. In a crisis situation (tình hình khủng hoảng) like this, it is important for everyone to follow the basic precautionary measures (biện pháp phòng ngừa cơ bản) to be safe from Coronavirus. It all starts with an individual to take a personal interest (lợi ích cá nhân) and create public awareness (nhận thức cộng động)."

But our Islam (đạo Hồi) has also preached (thuyết giáo) “Prevention is better than Cure”. If you are suffering from a disease (mắc bệnh) and not taking medicines or going to hospital for cure this is insane (điên rồ), Islam does not preach this. Islam teaches us to both put our trust in Allah and utilize (tận dụng) all the possible means (phương tiện có thể) to protect ourselves and our bodies.

"Female of the species is more deadly than the male" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng dại, chị em chúng tôi không ngán một ai. Photo by Luis Fernandes from Pexels

"Female of the species is more deadly than the male" = giống cái (của muôn loài) nguy hiểm hơn giống đực -> ở nhiều loài động vật, giống cái có độc còn giống đực thì không, tương tự, phụ nữ nguy hiểm hơn đàn ông.

Ví dụ
The female of the species is more deadly than the male, the famed author (tác giả nổi tiếng) Rudyard Kipling wrote, and that’s certainly true for the mosquito Aedes aegypti (muỗi vằn), also known as the yellow fever mosquito. Only females feast (hứng thú) on human blood, transmitting (truyền) not only yellow fever but also dengue (sốt xuất huyết) and several other diseases.

The female of the species is more deadly than the male goes the saying but too often it is women who are the victims (nạn nhân) in our world. Oppressed (bị áp bức) and treated (đối xử) as second class citizens since the dawn of time (rất lâu về trước), things are at last changing for women in the western world but elsewhere they continue to have fewer rights (quyền) and less say then men.

The female of the species is more deadly than the male. It’s a great line, familiar (quen thuộc) as a pop song in the 90s but actually nicked (đặt biệt danh) from a poem by Rudyard Kipling. Anyone who’s watched a David Attenborough documentary (phim tài liệu) will appreciate its truth when we see killer females who make their male animal or insect partners appear like big wusses (nhát cáy).

"Get into bad company" nghĩa là gì?

“Get into bad company” = Kết bạn/giao du với những người xấu.

Ví dụ
“A positive and encouraging circle of friends will ensure that a child stays positive and does not get into bad company,” said Mr. Srivastava.

A parent Nayan Naik said that in ninth many weak students fail. “If the government is really interested in the students not dropping out from school (bỏ học), then, it should adopt pass policy till tenth so that they get government jobs,” he said. He claimed that after dropping out from schools, many students get into bad company, drugs and anti-social activities (ma túy và các tệ nạn xã hội).

Let us now have a look at astrological (thuộc chiêm tinh) pointers to your child’s habit tendencies. The fiery Sun is ill-disposed off to another fiery planet Mars, makes her impulsive (bốc đồng, hấp tấp), aggressive (hung hãn), and argumentative (thích tranh cãi, hay cãi lẽ). Moon opposite Uranus makes her unconventional (trái với thông lệ), careless, unstable, having a mercurial temperament (tính khí không kiên định). Mars placed adverse to mischievous Neptune makes her self-deluding and addictive. Also, it makes her vulnerable to develop inferiority (vị trí thấp hơn, kém hơn) complex. Venus opposite Mars, and also placed adverse to Neptune makes her vulnerable to get into bad company. She may unmindfully misdirect her energies towards unproductive ends. Afflicted Neptune in the 2nd accounts for her indiscrete (không rời rạc, gắn chặt thành một khối) statements that may offend others. All the more, because she is undiplomatic (không khéo léo, không tế nhị, không có tính chất ngoại giao) and tactless (không khéo xử, không lịch thiệp) as her lagna sign Sagittarius implies.

"Get into an argument about" nghĩa là gì?

Bắt đầu hót líu lo. Photo by Wynand van Poortvliet

“Get into an argument about (someone or something)” = Bắt đầu cãi nhau với ai

Ví dụ
As The Daily Mail previously reported in August 2018, Alley previously appeared on Celebrity Big Brother. During one episode, she and another houseguest started to get into an argument about politics. However, just before things started to get rancorous (hay hiềm thù, đầy ác ý), Alley left the room.

Jamie is then dispatched (được sai phái, giết đi) by Prince Charles to enlist more men and support for the cause, including Lord Lovat, who is his and Jenny's grandfather. As a result of this, Jenny and Jamie get into an argument about him going to beg him for help. However, Jamie makes it up to his sister when he decides to watch over her newborn while she and Ian get some rest.

Meanwhile back in Roswell, we see Maria and Michael at the Wild Pony that Maria bartends. She spots Michael with another woman and getting into an altercation (cuộc đấu khẩu, cãi lộn) with another man, and then leads the couple outside. Michael and Maria then get into an argument about how Michael is hurting her by showing off with another woman in front of her and using the excuse that he’s not relationship material. This causes Maria to take his keys and tell him he can pick them up the next day and walk home.

"Nutty as a fruitcake" nghĩa là gì?

Này thì quá là điên rồi! Photo by Aleksey Kuprikov from Pexels

"Nutty as a fruitcake" hoặc "nuttier than a fruitcake" = nhiều hạt/quả như bánh trái cây -> (tính tình một người) quái gở, ngang bướng, điên khùng.

Ví dụ
It was so clear to me that Leslie was as nutty as a fruitcake. I would have been in grave neglect of my duty (sao lãng bổn phận nghiêm trọng) if I didn’t give the judge (thẩm phán) my opinion.

Jayalalithaa once cut a birthday cake shaped like Parliament (Quốc hội) revealing (tiết lộ) that anyone who didn’t take her seriously on national politics (chính trị quốc gia) was as nutty as a fruitcake.

If you thought that this season is going to be comprised (chứa đựng) of packed storylines, you’re in for a real roller coaster ride (chuyến tàu lượn siêu tốc). It is going to be nutty as a fruitcake, which will make your mind go bats in the belfry (dở hơi).

When he was virtually unopposed (gần như không phản đối) that might have seemed adventuresome (thích mạo hiểm), but now, with voters looking on, he may have to come up with a salient defense (biện pháp bảo vệ) for a flight of fancy that’s nutty as a fruitcake.

"Kitty-corner" nghĩa là gì?

Thằng Tèo nó lại làm trò nữa! Photo courtesy: Kurt Bauschardt

"Kitty (catty)-corner" = góc của mèo -> nằm chéo khi nhìn sang cái gì/người nào đó ở đối diện.

Ví dụ
The City is seeking proposals (đề xuất) from experienced engineering firms (công ty) to assess the concrete in the Maple Avenue, Church Street and Sherman Plaza parking garages and the Service Center on Asbury Avenue kitty-corner from the Civic Center.

Park and his family moved from South Korea to the United States in the summer of 1980. He grew up in a tenement (chung cư) on 80th Street kitty-corner from what was then the Leben Home, a facility to house the many patients who’d been dumped there by the city’s psychiatric wards (khoa tâm thần).

Competing gas stations catty-corner from each other having a gas price war, to see who could go the lowest in price! There was one gas station down here with regular gas at $2.07 and the one on the opposite corner had regular gas for $1.99... And the prices had just changed! I know this price drop of Oil is bad for all sorts of reasons, but the one good reason is that individuals get cheaper gas, at a time when they really need to conserve (duy trì) their funds...

"Get into a fight" nghĩa là gì?

“Get into a fight” = Cãi nhau/đấu khẩu và đánh nhau với ai.

Ví dụ
On Dec. 7, Wagar was on the Banff Trail CTrain station platform when he got into a fight with an unknown male and pulled a knife, Drew said.

“In fact, he decided to get into a fight with Andrew Cuomo, about whether he could have ordered the ventilators (máy thông gió) on his own years ago or not,” said CNN political correspondent Gloria Borger. “Look, this is a president who is clearly worried about the economy, as everybody else is, and seems to be driven by his own instinct, as we all know, because he’s told us, more than the science.”

Recently, JBL took to Twitter and shared an interesting story from his stint (phận sự, công việc) in WWE years ago. The story featured a backstage fight between Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle. Former WWE Superstar explained that both Superstars returned backstage one night, after a match, and were visibly heated. He also said that he could hear the fight, and was the only person in the locker room at the time. After John Lairinaitis separated the two, Eddie sat with JBL and admitted that it’s stupid of him to get into a fight with Angle.

"Get into a mess" nghĩa là gì?

“Get into a mess” = ở trong tình trạng bối rối, lúng túng, hỗn độn và phức tạp

Ví dụ
He further added that he is worried about his health. “The priority is to take care of the health. I was down with dengue (sốt xuất huyết) in the last four, five months. So my immunity (hệ miễn dịch) levels are not so great as well. Considering that, it is important I don’t get into a mess like that and it will be very tough to recover from that.”

The first stop was the Arms and Armor collection; they wanted to see some swords. As they entered a high-ceilinged (cao tột độ, trần nhà cao) grand hall festooned (kết thành tràng hoa) with ceremonial flags, which hung above a display of lance-wielding armored (bọc sắt) knights on armored horses, Shelton talked about the origins of the movie, which centers on a heavily mythologized (thần thoại hóa) Civil War sword. “I wanted to make a movie with Marc,” she said. “And I’ve always wanted to make a comedy caper (hành động dại dột) where ordinary people get into a mess.” Mel’s caper involves a couple from out of town (Jillian Bell and Michaela Watkins), a Union sword that they inherit, and a band of pro-Confederacy conspiracy theorists (nhà lý luận) who want to buy it. “I could see Marc in a pawnshop (hiệu cầm đồ),” she said.

Enter the bad guys and the Deputy Police Commissioner. Our guys: Sidharth (Dulquer Salman) and Kallis (VJ Rakshan) and gals Meera (Ritu Varma) and Shreya (Niranjani Ahathian). The cop in place: DCP Pratap (Gautam Menon). The guys know you should not be in the same ‘trade’ for long. Now shift to ‘product lifting’ and sales from consumer products lifted from cars. In short, the two guys are white collar offenders. They have to get into a mess. The guys – gals have a huge ethical difference. While the guys are tech savvy (hiểu biết, lương tri) white-collar offenders, the girls are orphans (đứa trẻ mồ côi) living a decent (đứng đắn, tao nhã) life. One out from an orphanage and another the daughter of an alcoholic. They plan to move to Goa. No more shortcuts: clean life. Half time with reality. Not really. The police have them. Then comes the twist you were waiting for and even guessed if a fiction buff (người ái mộ).

After the story was published, 22-year-old Michigan Advance reporter Allison Donahue went to the Capitol to ask Lucido about the page. "Gaze into space" nghĩa là gì?

Chân ái Photo by Daria Shevtsova

'look/stare/gaze into space' = nhìn chằm chằm vào khoảng không, nhìn lơ đãng khi đang suy nghĩ.

Ví dụ
During a sleepless night (đêm không ngủ), Scott joins Logan as they enjoy coffee and gaze into space. When Wolverine complains of his sleeplessness, Scott teases him that it's because of his body hair. "Too hot for covers," he observes, "and too cool without them."

When astronomers gaze into space they can see many different things. Galaxies, stars, and even black holes can be spotted from our place here on Earth. However, one of the most abundant types of matter in the universe can’t actually be seen at all, or at least we’ve yet to invent the means to do so.

Don’t let your body language advertise how bored you are at the company meeting. Sit upright, don’t gaze into space or out of the window, and don’t doodle (viết vẽ nguệch ngoạc) or sneak a look at your phone. When you speak in meetings, touching your face or mouth might suggest that you are not telling the truth so stay aware of your actions.

"Richer than Croesus" nghĩa là gì?

Mark Zuckerberg - không có giàu nhất, chỉ có giàu hơn. Photo by Josh Skidmore

"Richer than Croesus" = giàu hơn cả Croesus -> cực kỳ giàu có. Cũng có thể nói "rich as Croesus". Croesus (Kroisos) làm vua nước Lydia từ năm 560 trước Công nguyên, cho đến khi bị quân Ba Tư đánh đại bại. Nhờ chinh phạt các miền đất láng giềng, nhà vua trở nên nổi tiếng về sự giàu sang của mình.

Ví dụ
It's a good thing Michael Bloomberg is richer than Croesus. Because he just blew $10 million on a 60-second ad (quảng cáo) that's going to blow up in his face.

Imagine being Mark Zuckerberg, who has become richer than Croesus by amalgamating (hợp nhất) vast troves (tìm ra) of nearly everyone’s personal data (dữ liệu cá nhân) and then using it piecemeal (từng chút một) for global corporations (tập đoàn), governments (chính phủ), political (chính trị) groups and who knows who else through his Facebook social media monopoly (độc quyền). Last year, his mass peddling (bán dạo) of our privacy put another $27.3 billion in his pocket.

The WeWork debacle (thất bại) is starting to shape up as one of those cautionary tales (câu chuyện cảnh báo) for anyone who thinks that leaving a nice steady corporate job (công việc đoàn thể ổn định) for a start-up with beer on tap and a cultish tendency (xu hướng tôn sùng) to founder-worship (thần thánh người sáng lập) is a good thing. It's also a cautionary tale for anyone who thinks they're going to leave a big bank for an armful (ôm đầy) of start-up stock (cổ phiếu) which will pop when there's an IPO and make them richer than Croesus.

"Get inside your pants" nghĩa là gì?

“Get inside (one’s) pants” = Vô bên trong quần của ai -> Làm tình với ai.

Ví dụ
So keep those cute rompers and short skirts down ladies and wait it out until you truly feel comfortable in your own soul before allowing a man to get inside your pants and your heart.

He boasts of how woke he is, how much he is a feminist (người bênh vực bình quyền cho phụ nữ), cynically using the language of concern and understanding to advance to his goal. With so many liberal, affirmative aphorisms (cách ngôn), he’s basically a walking Instagram post… but one who wants to get inside your pants.

In the end, Schue decided to stay after breaking down in the cafeteria and telling Emma that he cared too much about the kids and what they had done to “save [his] life.” When Schue first started crying in the cafeteria, the cynic in me thought, “Wow, he really wants to get inside her pants.” Why else would a grown man weep and then say that he was crying “because of the kids”? But it appeared to be genuine, considering how seriously he had entertained April’s offer. Sincerity = 1; cynics = 0

“Get in the way (of something)” = Chặn đường -> Cản trở, phá đám hoặc gây trở ngại.

He said these people’s financial situation “tugs on me every single day.” He promised that someone’s financial situation or immigration status will not get in the way of coronavirus testing or treatment. Anybody that needs a test will be eligible to get one at no cost, and certainly it’s the same for treatment,” Kemp said.

“I think that now, more than ever, it’s imperative that we have providers, whether it's physicians or nurses, in a clinical environment providing care,” he said. “I am supportive of the concept of moving medical students into the workforce, I’m also supportive of moving nursing students, who are in the same boat ... into the clinical environment too. This is not the time to allow bureaucracy (hệ thống hành chính quan liêu) to get in the way of taking care of patients.”

When you're sitting at home your kind of just going crazy. You want to go do something." "Day-to-day" = ngày qua ngày -> hàng ngày.

Ví dụ
So, as the coronavirus creeps (bò, trườn) in its petty pace (nhịp độ nhỏ) from day to day, we wanted to know how our Post readers are coping. And if you have any suggestions on how to get through this.

It’s no surprise that ISPA is a collaborative (cộng tác) program between Nike Sportswear and real athletes. The pair’s aim is to not just boost athletic performance but to improve the day-to-day commutes of regular city dwellers (người thành phố).

News that the U.S. now has more virus cases than any other country and that U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson tested positive probably added to the setback in overnight futures trading. Also, yesterday’s dramatic rise in jobless claims remains in focus. We can’t overlook the fact that this crisis has had a devastating impact on peoples’ day-to-day lives. Many Americans are hurting right now, and so are many businesses. These aren’t easy times for anyone.

“Get in the last word” = Nói lời cuối cùng trong một cuộc tranh luận hoặc bàn bạc khi đã kiên quyết và dứt khoát muốn kết thúc.

Ví dụ
Don’t you hate the part of us that has to get in the last word? We can’t let the matter drop. We spit out words fueled by the heat of the moment – words that continue to sting and cut long after they’ve left our lips. Long past the moment we regret saying them.

“A pattern of needing to get in the last word can be driven by the need to feel better about yourself by being ‘right,’” Smith said. “It can also be a characteristic of narcissism, although this attribute alone doesn’t make someone a narcissist (người tự yêu bản thân mình, ảo tưởng sức mạnh).”

“I didn’t say you were doing anything wrong,” the man interrupted. “You said I set up my son to work on an oil company!” Biden shot back, angrily. “Isn’t that what you said? "It looks like you don’t have any more backbone than Trump does,” he said, as the crowd booed. “I’m not voting for you,” the man said, dismissing the former vice president with a hand gesture and taking a seat. “I knew you weren’t, man,” Biden responded. “You’re too old to vote for me.”

"(No more than/ not a) snowball's chance in hell" = không có cơ hội nào cho quả cầu tuyết ở địa ngục -> không có cơ hội làm gì, làm điều gì vô vọng. "Hell" (địa ngục) từ xa xưa được cho là nơi nóng vô cùng.

Ví dụ
I don't honestly think there's a snowball's chance in hell this ban (lệnh cấm) will be lifted (bãi bỏ) by April 4, but if it is, we'll be ready and you'll have a place to go.

There is not a snowball’s chance in hell that the Olympics and Paralympics will go ahead (diễn ra) in Tokyo in July. The sooner that is confirmed, the better for all concerned (bên liên quan).

The FA have suggested (đề nghị) April 3 as the date the season can begin again. This won’t happen as there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell England will have dealt (giải quyết) with the problem by then.

We’re generally averse (không thích) to companies with declining revenues (doanh thu giảm), but we’re not alone in that. There’s no more than a snowball’s chance in hell that share price (giá cổ phiếu) will head back to its old highs, in the short term.

“Get in (one’s) face” = Đương đầu/đứng đối mặt để cãi nhau, đánh nhau hoặc mắng mỏ ai.

Ví dụ
Ashley said he turned around to leave, but the security guard “continued to follow me and get in my face, and that's when he reached up and grabbed me around my throat.” Police arrested John Griggs. 63 and charged him with second degree assault. Police describe the surveillance (giám sát, theo dõi cẩn thận) video on the arrest slip, describing a heated argument and then Griggs grabbing Ashley's neck.

My dog, Anna, came up to me this morning. She nudged (nhích, thúc bằng khủy tay) me with her snout (mũi). She pushed in and tried to get in my face. I pushed her away at first. I wasn’t in the mood. Like many of you, the news of what’s happening had gotten to me. Then I looked at her and wrapped my arms around her and gave her a hug. It felt good. I think many of us have truly missed that kind of contact.

Hutchinson said: "I had a 77-year-old woman two nights ago literally get up off the gurney and get in my face, saying to me, 'YOU'RE NOT TESTING ME?' I said, 'No, ma'am, I'm not testing you. You are going home and you're doing good right now. Assume you've got the disease. If you get worse, please come back.' I knew she was anxious and wanted to know for sure. It's also possible those elves are themselves getting bullied (bị bắt nạt), for their size and their ears and those little green dresses they wear. If so, they wouldn't want to get in bad with the bullies by holding them accountable; they'd risk being targeted later. That's the kind of thinking that drives collaborator elites to make nice with dictators (kẻ độc tài) or colonizers (tên thực dân, kẻ chiếm thuộc địa), to secure their own futures.

This much we know about Negan – he’s the ruthless ruler of the Saviors, the group of followers who do his bidding. He wears a leather jacket. And he dearly loves the sound of his own voice. In one windy speech after another, Negan keeps reminding everyone that they’re working for him, that they’re all going to be very sorry if they get in bad with him, and that he’s willing to kill anyone, and zzzzzzzzz…..

It is hard, he wrote, to convey “the fear with which Rothstein was regarded. Get in bad with a Police Commissioner, or a District Attorney, or a Governor, or anyone like that and you could figure out with a fair degree of certainty what might happen to you on the basis of what you had done. Get in bad with Arnold Rothstein, and all the figuring in the world wouldn’t get you anywhere. It’s true that nothing might happen to you but Fear. But that’s an awful calamity (tai ương) to come upon any man.”

"Some (people) are more equal than others" = vài người được bình đẳng hơn những người khác -> cho dù có bình đẳng thì vẫn có những người được đối xử tốt hơn. Cụm từ xuất hiện trong quyển "Animal Farm" của George Orwell: "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others."

Ví dụ
But Yale can’t just let the rat race (cuộc đua chuột vô tận - theo đuổi vô nghĩa) stop, not for one minute. After all, if we don’t have grades, how will we know what we’re worth (xứng đáng)? Yes, all students are equal, but some are more equal than others.

"Get going with her" nghĩa là gì?

“Get going with (one) = Bắt đầu mối quan hệ yêu đương/tình cảm với ai.

Ví dụ
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen Thursday night, the 53-year-old actress opened up about her teenage crush on the music icon — and her failed attempt to get going with him.

The character recently arrived while Tony was missing, with him held hostage (con tin, đồ thế chấp) at Breda McQueen's pig farm before finally being freed this month. With his wife Diane thinking he'd run off with another woman, it didn't take long for Edward to worm his way into the family and get going with her. As soon as Tony returned though, Diane felt guilty and decided to stick by her husband. Edward was left furious with the decision, and has since been tormenting a recovering Tony who remains haunted by his ordeal (sự thử thách, cách thử tội).

Why pick on Arcann? It relates to his romance; since Alliance Alerts aren’t generally required to be finished before moving forward in the main storyline, it would hypothetically be possible to have Arcann’s Alliance Alert sitting on a character for years before completing it and, potentially, choosing to get going with him. To prevent this from causing issues with future romances, we need to know that you can no longer begin a romance with Arcann via that mission once a character has begun the storyline in 5.10. (Remember: if you complete his alert before starting the first storyline mission in 5.10, then nothing will change with him or his alert at all.)

It appears many are. God bless you. We need more. A lot more. Do it in whatever way you think best, whatever way you can. You won’t regret it. Not for a second. Along those lines, here’s hoping the good folks at MUFFY are working furiously behind the scenes. Here’s hoping that they are close to hiring a director. Here’s hoping that they have selected a 2020 campaign chair so a fund raising drive can get going. Here’s hoping they are listening to people who know and deeply understand how non-profits work. Here’s hoping they will end the silence and tell all of us soon where things stand.

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – It was early in the game, about six minutes into Syracuse’s win over Boston College at the Conte Forum on Tuesday night, when Elijah Hughes pulled up for a 3-pointer on the left wing. Hughes buried the shot to give Syracuse an 11-8 lead. And that’s when Hughes felt … it. It is what all scorers feel when they know they’re on and the basket looks as big as the ocean. Hughes saw that 3-pointer go in and said to himself, “Let’s get going, kid.’’

'Be pushed for space' = có rất ít hoặc hạn chế về không gian.

Garlic. Yes, it’s easier to find if you’ve popped it in the fridge’s salad drawer, but if you're pushed for space, it's fine in a dry, ventilated (thoáng) area.

Start with the basics. Don't keep anything you don't need to. That downloads folder, for instance, is packed with items you've dealt with, that you don't need, or that you can download again if you ever want to. So trash them. You can do that manually, and you will do it manually when you're really pushed for space, but you can also get your Mac to do it. Choose the Finder menu, click on Preferences, and then on Advanced.

This family-owned British brand is best known for its luxury DAB radios but also makes fantastic wireless desktop speakers. Insightful, musical and rich in dynamics, the MR1 Mk2s sound like a ‘proper’ hi-fi. In addition to Bluetooth connectivity for streaming you get an optical input capable of supporting hi-res audio up to 24-bit/192kHz, plus an optional battery pack for portability. If you’re pushed for space these desktop speakers are a perfect balance of impressive performance and dinky dimensions.
