"Lose their nerve" nghĩa là gì?

Cách ly xã hội dần trở nên quen thuộc và con người không còn sợ hãi nữa. Photo by Nathana Rebouças on Unsplash

"Lose one's nerve" = mất can đảm -> trở nên sợ hãi, rụt rè.

Ví dụ
The belief (niềm tin) will come but what you can’t do is go blaming (đổ lỗi), whispering (xì xào bậy bạ) or losing your nerve.

With schools closed, thousands will lose a safe place for their children. Shut-ins (không được ra ngoài) will lose much-needed human contact. Some will lose their nerve and confidence (tự tin).

State and territory (vùng lãnh thổ) leaders lost their nerve and incited panic (bị kích động hoảng loạn) across the country by announcing they were effectively shutting down their economies (đóng cửa nền kinh tế).

Do not overestimate (đánh giá quá cao) your own tolerance (sức chịu đựng) for risk (rủi ro) either: “If you lose your nerve after investing (đầu tư), you risk selling up before you can reap the reward (gặt hái kết quả),” he says.

"Embroil oneself in (something)" nghĩa là lôi kéo ai/bản thân mình (vào một cuộc xung đột hoặc tình thế khó xử).

Ví dụ
Take the role of Katrielle Layton, and embroil yourself in a casual, quizzical quest (cuộc điều tra đánh đố) as Katrielle searches (tìm kiếm) for her missing father—the famous Professor Layton himself!

Akira tells the story of a brutal gang (nhóm tàn bạo) of teenage criminals (tội phạm) who somehow become embroiled in an apocalyptic nuclear battle (trận chiến hạt nhân tận thế) that has the potential (khả năng) to destroy the entire planet.

Having announced my intention to retire (ý định nghỉ hưu) at the 2010 general election (tổng tuyển cử) I wasn’t really expecting to embroil myself in another electoral contest (cuộc đua) until the diminutive figure (dáng vẻ nhỏ bé) of John Bercow bounced up and asked whether I’d consider running his campaign (chiến dịch) for Speaker (Người phát ngôn).

"The first leg" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Jernej Graj on Unsplash

"The first leg" có từ leg là giai đoạn, chặng đường -> cụm từ này nghĩa là giai đoạn đầu tiên, chặng đầu tiên.

Ví dụ
A 3-0 deficit from the first leg of a UEFA Champions League knockout tie (vòng loại) should by all rights mean 'game over', but there have been a few teams who have turned lost causes into unforgettable wins in Europe's top club competition.

The match in Naples ended in a 1-1 draw (hòa) and the return leg at Camp Nou has been delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the 27-year-old revealed that the first leg in Italy made a great impression.

Valencia have a few key players missing for the game against Atalanta on Tuesday night. Star striker Maxi Gomez is ruled out with an injury, along with defenders Eliaquim Mangala, Cristiano Piccini and Ezequiel Garay. Gabriel Paulista missed the first leg due to suspension (đình chỉ), but is available for this tie. However, he has been left out of the squad announced by the manager.

"Riot of colors" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Robert Katzki on Unsplash

"Riot of colors" = màu sắc nổi loạn -> nghĩa là có nhiều màu sắc, tương phản lẫn nhau.

Ví dụ
Beautiful blooms in a riot of colors and price ranges can be found in stores ranging from the local grocery to florists (người bán hoa) and nurseries (vườn ươm). The hard part seems to be keeping that vase of flowers fresh and fragrant (thơm ngát).

On the day we stopped in, it was overcast (u ám) and a bit dreary (ảm đạm), but that was not keeping folks from hitting the slopes. The sky might have been grey, but on the ground it was a riot of colors between the people wearing bright ski outfits and the rows of vibrantly designed skis and snowboards leaning against any solid surface that would support them.

Carnival dazzles Hanoi with riot of colors. Despite Hanoi’s sweltering (oi ả) weather, carnival artists paraded (diễu hành) down a pedestrians-only street with extravagant dance and music to cheer from locals and tourists Sunday.

"Confuse me about" nghĩa là gì?

"Confuse someone about something" nghĩa là khiến ai đó hoang mang về điều gì.

Ví dụ
The movie is really exploring the things that confuse me about the internet, the things I’m unsure about — not my authority about it. I feel like people that speak with authority on the internet don’t understand it. And it’s not really a time for us to speak with authority on the cultural moment because it’s so confusing.

“I knew these things would happen to me and I have to be very patient and do things which are meaningful and part of my dreams. It paid off in the end. My resolve what strong. No matter what, I will do what is right for me and stuff which is part of my dream and not let anyone else confuse me about my dreams. I sat at home for long time. I am not going to sit at home any longer when there are great roles out there”, says Manoj.

What continues to confuse me about the complicated California conservatorship system is why “estate” and “person” are separate entities. When you control someone’s finances, you also control their actions and daily life! It might not give you the power to force medicine or psychiatric (thuộc bệnh tâm thần) treatment on them (like the “personhood” conservatorship grants you) but literally everything around us is governed by and manipulated with money.

Lucky Devil Lounge is bringing its dancers (vũ công) to your door with a new food delivery service it's calling—wait for it—"Boober Eats."

Lucky Devil has a full food menu and non-alcoholic drinks, like ginger beer and Red Bull, available for delivery.

...The twist comes when your food shows up. Instead of being greeted a harried driver (lái xe gây phiền nhiễu/phiền toái/phiền hà) in jeans and a hoodie, your meal is hand-delivered by two dancers.

"They'll wear pasties and booty shorts, drop off the food, dance for a second (nhảy một vài giây) and then we'll move along," Boulden says. "We'll still stay a reasonable distance back. They have Lysol as well."

"Grade-grubber" nghĩa là gì?

Học kĩ chỗ này mới được điểm A chớ! Photo by Rachel on Unsplash

"Grade-grubber" nghĩa là học sinh học gạo; học sinh mà lúc nào cũng nghĩ chăm chăm đến việc đạt điểm số cao.

Ví dụ
Like Elena Alvarez (Isabella Gomez), I’m a queer grade grubber who was driven by academic accomplishment.

I was also a grade grubber, not an uncommon affliction (nỗi đau buồn). During my first term of high school, I complained to my counselor that my Latin teacher had not given me the A that I fiercely believed I deserved. The teacher told the counselor that I was a “millimeter bandit,” which was true.

What’s more, if your average college-goer does manage to read through her professor’s comments, she will likely view them as a grievous insult to her entire person, abject proof of how this cruel, unfeeling instructor hates her. That sliver of the student population that actually reads comments and wants to discuss them? They’re kids whose papers are good to begin with, and often obsessed (bị ám ảnh) with their GPAs. I guarantee you that every professor you know has given an A to a B paper just to keep a grade-grubber off her junk.

Irma's Southwest restaurant in downtown Houston said an anonymous (ẩn danh, nặc danh) customer left the $9,400 tip Monday, just a few hours after Harris County ordered bars and nightclubs (hộp đêm) to close amid the coronovirus outbreak.

"Hold tip to pay your guys over the next few weeks," the customer (khách hàng) wrote on the receipt (biên lai).

The restaurant said it is planning to remain operating as a take-out eatery, but some workers could be sent home if there isn't a high demand.

What are the economic consequences of an influenza pandemic? And given the pandemic (đại dịch), what are the economic costs and benefits of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI)? Using geographic variation in mortality during the 1918 Flu Pandemic in the U.S., we find that more exposed areas experience a sharp and persistent (dai dẳng, liên tục) decline in economic activity. The estimates imply that the pandemic reduced manufacturing output by 18%. The downturn is driven by both supply and demand-side channels. Further, building on findings from the epidemiology (khoa nghiên cứu bệnh dịch, dịch tễ học) literature establishing that NPIs decrease influenza mortality (tỷ lệ tử vong), we use variation in the timing and intensity of NPIs across U.S. cities to study their economic effects. We find that cities that intervened earlier and more aggressively do not perform worse and, if anything, grow faster after the pandemic is over. Our findings thus indicate that NPIs not only lower mortality; they also mitigate (giảm thiểu) the adverse economic consequences of a pandemic.

"Get off easy" nghĩa là gì?

"Get off easy" = Thoát dễ dàng -> Tránh hoặc thoát khỏi được hình phạt nặng/nghiêm cho việc phạm tội hoặc sai phạm của mình.

Ví dụ
Well, if you are still bitter about the Astros sign-stealing their way to the 2017 World Series title (and how could you not be?), it means, once again, the Astros get off easy.

“They should definitely pay for their crimes. Not to say that they should get off easy at all,” Roegner said during a press conference. “I think they should be punished, but for us to take their life, I cannot be pro-life and support the death penalty any longer.”

(An aside here, and something that I think is worth discussing another time: is this REALLY how we want our justice system to work? Get off easy if you plead guilty (regardless of if you actually did it) or fight it and maybe end up spending your life in prison (again, regardless of if you actually did it). It’s the justice system’s way of saying, “Don’t make us go to the trouble and expense of giving you a fair trial…which you’re guaranteed in the Constitution…because if you do you’ll REALLY regret it”.)

Then to the extent (tới chừng mực mà) a massive government bailout (khoản cứu trợ khổng lồ của chính phủ) is needed, the government can just deal directly with the relatively few Big Businesses that carry those receivables, e.g. by assuming the receivables or subsidizing (trợ cấp) them.

"Above your pay grade" nghĩa là gì?

"Above/Beyond (someone's) pay grade" nghĩa là điều mà một người nào đó không đủ kiến thức, kỹ năng, thiện chí để làm; việc nằm ngoài thẩm quyền của ai đó.

Ví dụ
If you believe that you’re working above your pay grade and are consistently producing good results, then the new year is a good time to ask for one. Of course, asking for a raise can be daunting (làm nản chí) — there’s the risk of rejection and disappointment, or the fear of appearing greedy and ungrateful.

As you sort of get older and you look back, there’s a lot of things that stand out that might not have been standouts at the time, simply because you’re in the midst of it. Sometimes when you do a film, it can be a little bit like being in a battle in terms of trying to fight your corner or in terms of what might be going on above your pay grade about which you don’t necessarily know, although you’re certainly conscious of tension (tình trạng căng thẳng).

During questioning, Biden mocked Ritter as “ol’ Scotty boy” and suggested that his demands — that the international community compel Iraq to cooperate with inspectors — if met, would give Ritter the unilateral authority to start a war in Iraq. "Rat race"= cuộc đua chuột -> cuộc đua vô tận, tự chuốc lấy thất bại, hoặc theo đuổi vô nghĩa. Nó gợi lên hình ảnh của những con chuột trong phòng thí nghiệm đua để có được những “pho mát” – giống như con người trong xã hội, đua với nhau để tìm kiếm tiền bạc, tài chính.

Ví dụ
Anyone who has had enough of the rat race have the chance to bid on (trả giá) a home on the edge of a forest (bìa rừng) on the outskirts (ngoại ô) of Chester.

"There's still folks (người) pouring out (tỏa ra) of the hot spots in Atlanta and the different places that want to get up and go in the mountains and get away from the rat race down there," he said. "

You're stuck at home with your family and everyone is getting on one another's last nerve (chọc tức nhau), but believe it or not this is the time that you'll wish you had back once the rat race begins again.

I recall asking him, believing it required bravery (sự can đảm), how he was able to tap out (thoát khỏi) of the rat race of a materialistic world (thế giới vật chất). I mean here was David - a Wall Street analyst (nhà phân tích); "successful" in the eyes of the rat race - deciding against it all.

"Race to the bottom" = cuộc đua xuống đáy -> thuật ngữ chỉ sự cạnh tranh giữa các doanh nghiệp, quốc gia, tiểu bang, bằng các cách như giảm chất lượng hoặc hi sinh lợi ích của người lao động để giảm giá sản phẩm xuống thấp hơn đối thủ.

Ví dụ
The key to managing (giải quyết) this race to the bottom is to make sure that no single player in this race gets too far ahead of the others. The destruction (phá hoại) of the value of currencies (giá trị tiền tệ) must be slow, methodical (cẩn thận), insidious (xảo quyệt) and coordinated (phối hợp).

On Monday, the RBA pumped extra liquidity (thanh khoản) into the banking system, part of a package of measures (gói biện pháp) aimed at ensuring (đảm bảo) business and households have access to credit (tín dụng) as the coronavirus causes chaos (hỗn loạn) in global financial markets (thị trường tài chính toàn cầu). "It's a race to the bottom and the RBA will need to follow suit (làm theo)," Citi economist (nhà kinh tế học) Josh Williamson said.

Right now, fear is still winning the day, and “false news” is spreading faster than official World Health Organisation (WHO) and authorities’ (chính quyền) information. Many people are continuing to make the most risk-averse (mức ngại rủi ro), and often unsubstantiated (không có căn cứ), decisions – hoard (tích trữ) face masks, close borders (đóng biên), racially stigmatise (kỳ thị chủng tộc) Asians, for example. It leads to a race to the bottom. We must instead make it easier for people to access reliable (đáng tin cậy) info and feel confident in making decisions about their organisations (tổ chức) and themselves.

"Get no change out of (someone)" = Không nhận được tiền thối-> Không nhận được sự trợ giúp từ ai; không thể có được thông tin/sự phản ứng như mong muốn (không móc được của ai cái gì); Không địch lại được ai (trong cuộc tranh luận); không cạnh tranh nổi ai (trong việc buôn bán).

Ví dụ
Eliasson - who had managed to get no change out of boyhood City fan Scott Golbourne - had swapped wings with Palmer and found himself up against Donald Love, whose work was cut out dealing with the tricky customer.

You might think I’m being harsh on the young Belgian. However, we can surely all agree that he’s a frustrating player for sure. Frustrating in the sense that he’s briefly demonstrated attributes that can decimate (tiêu hao nhiều, làm mất đi một phần mười) top European defenders. It’s hard to get your head around how a player who can lead Mats Hummels on a merry dance can later get no change out of a League Two defence such as Plymouth Argyle’s – twice, and in fact look to be at about their level.

I ask whether he still considers himself, deep down, an Arsenal fan? "No, you drop that as soon as you turn pro. They're just another team. Although the away grounds I enjoy playing at most are the Emirates and Old Trafford." It is the latter where he normally faces the bigger challenge. "Wes Brown is the defender who gives me most trouble," he concedes. "I played against him twice in the league and the Carling Cup as well last season, and I didn't get no change out of him. His reading of the game is excellent and he likes to get forward as well, so I have to track back unless I can pass him over to the left back, and as a winger you don't want to be going that way."

Experiencing the symptoms of opioid withdrawal (cai thuốc phiện) increases the odds that a person who gets narkied will share needles or have a non-fatal overdose, according to a new USC study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

As part of efforts to reach out to women who get narkied, the India HIV/AIDS Alliance is working with the Punjab Government, through its Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at the Civil Hospital in Kapurthala, to develop a comprehensive harm reduction model for women who inject drugs in Punjab.

Data from free rehabs show that in 2017 in Bucharest, the number of people who get narkied (PWID) was close to 9 000. Heroin was a primary drug for 9 out of 10 people entering treatment. As a group of new psychoactive substances (chất/thuốc tác động đến trí tuệ và hành vi) appeared in Romania in the last decades, the patterns of drug use also changed. Now, around 5 percent of PWID report NPS as their primary substance. During 2019, the number of first-time treatment clients for heroin use increased along with entrants for cannabis (cần sa). But this week they finally told all clinics to end treatments by April 15th, except in exceptional cases, such as when a woman wants to freeze her eggs before undergoing chemotherapy (hóa học trị liệu). The aim is to relieve stress on the health service and divert doctors and nurses to the frontline. The few clinics currently still open can continue IVF treatment until the closing date, meaning some couples will get lucky.

West plays Gordon a man, as he puts it, of the “most astonishing mediocrity (tính chất thường/người xoàng kinh dị nhất)” who nonetheless manages, through a combination of cheesy empowering talk and bullying malice (ác ý, hiểm độc), to get rich and get kicks, all the while controlling his charges.

Strategy and controlled risk is the name of the game with Children of Zodiarcs and it is that combination which promises tension, anticipation and a whole host of excitement. With things inspired by the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics and Magic: The Gathering, if you’re one of the millions who get kicks from either of those two genres, Children of Zodiarcs looks to deliver.

The Charger and Bigfoot 12in wheel bikes have an alloy frame with a low standover and, obviously, no pedals. The Charger comes with Vee Tire Speedster tyres, with a shallow file tread for maximum speed on tarmac (đường nhựa). There’s no brake on this bike, with Early Rider believing that these bikes are best left without them. However, the Bigfoot does get a rear V-brake, along with the smallest Vee Tire Crown Gem tyres we’ve ever seen. There’s a fair bit of volume in their 2.25in width, and the bike is clearly designed for kids who get kicks from the dirt at an early age. To keep things safer, there’s a rubber steerer damper to prevent the front wheel from spinning. Finishing the package is a short stem and a super cool riser bar built specifically for Early Rider by Ritchey.
