"Lead poisoning" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Justin Schüler on Unsplash

"Lead poisoning" nghĩa là sự nhiễm độc chì.

Ví dụ
A new state public awareness campaign is soon taking flight to encourage hunters 'get the lead out' when they hunt wildlife. Eight eagles (đại bàng) have died since the first of this year -- all of the deaths are believed to be linked to lead poisoning.

The yellow item was a paint chip. Paint chips, which Holland said taste sweet, pose a significant risk to young children if the chips contain traces of lead. According to the Mayo Clinic, contaminated paint chips were the most common way for children to get lead poisoning.

Lead poisoning can have serious health consequences, especially for children under the age of 6. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention use a reference level of 5 micrograms per deciliter (đề-xi-lít) to identify children with blood lead levels that are higher than normal. Fifty children in Richland County met this threshold last year, but Corbett thinks that many children go untested.

"Share and share alike" nghĩa là gì?

Nhớ phải chia đều bằng nhau nha, không có đứa tị. Photo by Daria Shevtsova from Pexels

"Share and share alike" = chia sẻ bằng nhau -> chia các thứ một cách đồng đều.

Ví dụ
We have the best medical system (hệ thống y tế) in the world. If your sick they will help you. Share and share alike. We’re all in this together.

After much consideration (cân nhắc), Elsa placed Chi Chita with a younger litter so they would not be a threat (đe dọa) to her. Chi Chita quickly warmed up to the puppies and fighting for food was never an issue again – this group lived by the motto (phương châm) “share and share alike” which suited Chi Chita just fine.

The first way we can show we care is to take personal responsibility (chịu trách nhiệm cá nhân) for our hygiene (vệ sinh), health and the health of those in proximity (ở gần) to us. The WHO and others have made recommendations (khuyến cáo) as to how do to do that. But share your resources, too. Take a family a meal, help working parents with their kids or with a meal. You know what to do. Share and share alike.

"Share your pain" nghĩa là gì?

Một cái ôm là đủ rồi. Photo by Adrijana from Pexels

"Share one's pain" = chia sẻ nỗi đau -> đồng cảm, thấu hiểu nỗi đau.

Ví dụ
We need to be physically distant (cách ly thân thể), but we need to share our collective (tập thể) pain.

They pick Nancy up and share her pain and hold her while she cries and reassure (trấn an) her as best they can.

In a mysterious (bí ẩn) way, sharing our pain instead of hiding it, can bring healing not only to ourselves but to those around us.

Rather than trying to ignore (lờ đi), numb (tê liệt) or suppress (kìm nén) the pain, we must allow ourselves to feel those painful emotions (cảm xúc). Finally, true healing (chữa lành) requires that we allow others to share our pain and walk with us through it.

"Share in" nghĩa là gì?

Chia sẻ là hạnh phúc. Photo by Brett Sayles from Pexels

"Share in (something)" nghĩa là có phần trong cái gì/ tham gia vào cái gì.

Ví dụ
Small businesses to share in £25m pot (số tiền lớn) to help smaller businesses across Stafford during the coronavirus pandemic (đại dịch).

Often, the other party you are going to communicate (liên lạc) with is known, so keys can be created and shared in a secure (an toàn) manner before communication begins.

The need for food is a natural tendency (xu hướng tự nhiên), its realization (nhận thức) is — according to the dynamic theory (lý thuyết động) of natural law (luật tự nhiên) — required by human nature, because the desire for food is shared in common by all human beings.

Moreover I have also highlighted (nhấn mạnh) the Israel motif, suggesting that the Colossians faced a challenge similar to that in Galatians – a challenge from the synagogue (hội giáo Do thái) to the Gentile Christians who were assuming they shared in the inheritance (kế thừa) of the people of God, Israel.

"All sharped up" nghĩa là gì?

"All sharped up" = tất cả đều sắc nét lên -> trông bảnh, diện, sáng chói.

Ví dụ
Les Riczinger looking all sharped up after a visit to Doc Hess's one day.

A bunch of South Shore street punks (ban nhạc rock) all sharped up for a big night in New York town, they are so charged with energy and good humor they push right past the audience (khán giả).

I sent him some men's soap when I was at P.O.E. Ann and I got all sharped up in dresses for the dance last night. We even did our hair up in the morning so we would look nice and surprise the boys.

While I sit in the cart (xe đẩy), this guy all sharped up comes in the lobby (sảnh) with this gorgeous woman. He is hurrying her to the elevator (thang máy). She is a “woman of the night,” as they say.

"Sober as a judge" nghĩa là gì?

Không hiểu đang uống nước hay uống rượu Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels

'Sober as a judge' = tỉnh táo, không say; không thiên vị, đứng đắn, trang nghiêm (như quan tòa).

Ví dụ
After collapsing while performing on stage in Polokwane just last month, Emtee has come out saying he’s now free from all narcotics (chất gây nghiện, ma túy) and is as sober as a judge.

A disruptive (gây rối) drunk who stabbed (đâm) a police officer in the neck with a screwdriver must remain as a sober as a judge for the next three months or he risks prison time for his actions.

“It wasn’t my fault. I’m sober as a judge. What am I supposed to do when another truck hits me and makes me go off the road, and I try to get on the road and I get hit again?” Mauney said.

“In public presentations, he could be as sober as a judge. In private, I can’t imagine anyone who laughed more,” Kenyon said. “I’m biased, but he was probably the best wing man a guy could have.”

"Stone-cold sober" nghĩa là gì?

1, 2, 3 zô... Photo by Pressmaster

'Stone-cold sober' = hoàn toàn tỉnh táo, không say.

Ví dụ
If you’ve ever been intoxicated (say sưa) at 2:30 a.m., chances are you’ve ordered a handful of cheeseburgers from McDonalds. Jason Campeau ordered 60 of them the other day, and he was stone-cold sober.

But there’s one question that really haunts (ám ảnh) me at night, that I can’t get out of my head during each visit to Charles Village’s premier dining establishment. If by some freak accident I found myself at UniMini stone cold sober, what would I order?

It’s like one of those drinking games where if you get it wrong, you have to drink a shot of some spirit, and the more you drink, the worse you become at it. But here I am, stone cold sober, and I am touching surfaces like it’s a competition, then pawing my nose, mouth and eyes, and finally heading to the soap.

"Sober him up" nghĩa là gì?

'Sober someone up' = làm tỉnh rượu; đối mặt với sự thật.

Ví dụ
Although everything in nature is telling us to sober up as the world grapples with (vật lộn) the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian right-wing warriors have chosen to communalise (biến thành của chung) the human tragedy on Hindu-Muslim lines.

“It's not clear why he isn't supporting the child yet he is the father. He decided not to be responsible to his own child and seems not to have learnt any lesson from his mistake. A custodial sentence (án phạt giam) will sober him up. I sentence him to nine months in jail,” ruled Chitembwe.

Eventually, the other SWAT team members were able to get the sergeant (sĩ quan) under control, to an extent. They half carried him into a bathroom in Caldwell’s house, got him into the tub and doused (dội nước) him with cold water in an effort to sober him up. Instead, he apparently passed out, going in and out of consciousness (ý thức, tỉnh táo).

"Panic buying" nghĩa là gì?

Hốt em đi mọi người. Photo courtesy: Indrid__Cold

"Panic buying" = mua sắm hoảng loạn -> mua đồ tích trữ do dịch bệnh, thiên tai hay nhiều nguyên nhân khác.

Ví dụ
There is an early sign that supermarket panic buying may be on the wane (suy giảm), if figures (số liệu) from the online bank Starling are an accurate guide to how shoppers are behaving.

As pictures of empty shelves dominated our social-media feeds here in Britain, armchair critics (nhà phê bình suông) denounced (lên án) their fellow citizens as selfish and greedy. Stop hoarding! End the panic-buying!

YOU will note that when there is a surge (tăng lên) in the number of Covid-19 cases, people start panic buying. This has happened in several cities around the world. We have seen people stocking up on canned food, instant noodles, beverages, etc. We have also seen people fighting over toilet paper in supermarkets.

"In our midst" nghĩa là gì?

Hơ hơ, con bị ngộp quá bố mẹ ơi Photo by Cleyder Duque from Pexels

'In one's midst' = ở giữa, xung quanh, nằm trong số.

Ví dụ
The women who have been warning about the sick detainee (tạm giam) in their midst are at the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center, in a rural area of the state near Lafayette. It is run by the private prison corporation GEO Group and holds more than 400 women.

But in response to workers’ inquiries about possible infections in their midst, here’s a look at what these three companies -- all major Lehigh Valley employers -- have had to say: “UPS is not confirming employee cases for employee privacy reasons," a company representative said in a statement.

Official case numbers may be higher there because the local hospital is part of the Mayo Clinic system, which has its own testing capabilities. But the numbers stand out in contrast to other rural counties in Minnesota and surrounding states, leaving no doubt among residents that the virus is in their midst.

Ai thông minh nhất nhà nào? Photo by Julissa Helmuth from Pexels

"Not the sharpest pencil in the box/cup" = không phải chiếc bút chì mài nhọn nhất trong hộp -> không thông minh, thiếu khôn ngoan, khù khờ.

Ví dụ
He’s not the sharpest pencil in the box. He thinks companies endorse (tán thành) him instead of the other way around.

I would argue, based on both the public and private dealings with him, that Kriel is not the sharpest pencil in the box.

The cyclists were also described as being “not the sharpest pencil in the box” and “organ donors” (hiến tặng nội tạng) among other things.

The political view (quan điểm chính trị) of each cartoonish (tranh biếm họa) is easily identified. Opponents (đối lập) of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tend to see him as a corrupt tyrant (bạo chúa tham nhũng). Opponents of “Blue and White” party chief Benny Gantz tend to see him as not the sharpest pencil in the pencil case.

'In the midst of something' = ở giữa; trong lúc.

Ví dụ
“God is blessing in the midst of the storm. Thank you Jesus!” said one lady as she drove away with a smile and a car full of food.

“When I received the photograph from him that my mom is holding, and read the personal inscription, I couldn’t stop smiling. As my daughter said, ‘In the midst of the coronavirus, George Clooney comes through.’”

Even in the midst of this pandemic, there is inspiration all around. We are fortunate that Prince George has many strong leaders who have provided valuable information and guidance. It is incredible to know that first responders and essential workers, all workers and volunteers for that matter, bravely face this crisis locally and beyond.

"Get lost in translation" nghĩa là gì?

"Get lost in translation" = Lạc trong phiên dịch -> Dịch hoặc truyền tải không đúng nghĩa/dịch mất nội dung quan trọng.

Ví dụ
Face-to-face communication is becoming less common in the workplace due to the rise of remote work, coworking apps, and new technologies. It’s important that critical information or context of communications doesn’t get lost in translation.

In case you get lost in translation, a vector is an organism (cơ thể sinh vật, hệ thống tổ chức) that transmits a disease or parasite (ký sinh trùng) from one animal or plant to another. Are all these getting to you? Or you’re still dense? If you are, just bear with me as these might save your life. Never mind the others, I’m sure they’re not as important as yourself.

A word's meaning can sometimes get lost in translation as it crosses borders. That seems to be happening to the term "lockdown". About one-third of the world's population has now had its movement restricted in the fight against coronavirus, but those restrictions (lệnh giới nghiêm) vary so substantially from country to country that one word is being used to describe very different experiences.

"Get it in the neck" = bị cho một vố đau -> bị quở trách trừng phạt nặng nề.

Ví dụ
Long before Heston Blumenthal put it on the culinary (xào nấu được) map, the Thameside village of Bray was the unlikely home of British horror, and Black Park, near Slough, was its Transylvania. Here, many a Bri-Nylon-clad actress would get it in the neck from Christopher Lee’s Count Dracula.

Against that backdrop, the airlines are demanding $58 billion. If they don’t get it, they are telling the government they will start firing workers as soon as next week. As usual, the little people will get it in the neck while corporations and business leaders gorge (nhồi nhét) themselves at the public trough (máng nhào bột).

I offered him a chair to sit. It was a question of my honour. Though he was content to sit on the floor, because he himself considered anything – to which something as inconvenient as honour was now linked – rather unnecessary. He was powerful in a gruff (thô lỗ, cộc cằn), baulky way; if honour were to confront him, it would itself get it in the neck.

"Get into shape" nghĩa là gì?

"Get (someone or something) into shape" = Trở lại với trạng thái bình thường/chấp nhận được; có sức khỏe tốt/tập thể dục để duy trì sức khỏe; cải thiện bản thân/điều gì.

Ví dụ
Football teams are finished with preseason camps and well into the real season. The state’s deer hunters, the ones who hunt with guns, aren’t far behind, but they do have a few more weeks to get things into shape and fine-tune plans for opening day and put in a few adjustments for when things change.

"I’ve got two nice targets that are under my quarantine (thời gian cách ly, kiểm dịch), which is perfect, so I’m able to throw to them for a little bit," Sudfeld said. "But it’s hard. It’s kind of a day-by-day thing trying to figure out how to keep developing, how to get into shape this offseason without the full weight room, full workout, all that stuff."

Staying in shape — or just getting into shape in the first place — is hard work. That's why you make new years' resolutions, sign up for gym memberships and healthy meal kit delivery services and then buy smart scales to track our weight loss trajectory. But one of the most powerful tools in your fitness arsenal actually goes on your wrist. Fitness trackers are the coaches, cheerleaders, reminders and scorecards that keep us on track every day.

"Get into a stew" nghĩa là gì?

"Get in(to) a stew" = (thông tục) đứng ngồi không yên, lo âu/hoảng hốt và càu nhàu.

Ví dụ
Sometimes they get in a stew and nothing happens and other times didn't see it coming. It's not the easiest though on the West of Europe.

My feeling is that women should stop being so pathetic (thảm bại, đáng khinh). We cannot have everything our own way: equal pay, year-long maternity leave, seats given up on the Tube, while on the other hand we get in a stew over a fictional bit of nonsense where a woman struggles, tossing her long blonde hair, before getting down and dirty and sighing with pleasure.

They were then reported to have retired together to the Gansevoort Hotel and ordered up ice buckets and towels (wtf?) at 1.30 am. Both denied the claims but the gossip stuck and after much speculation the split announcement has finally come – however Giada didn’t seem too bothered a few days ago. She was spotted enjoying a boozy meal with fellow Food Network star Bobby Flay in Miami after a work event. How long before this amicable (hòa giải, thân tình) split turns sour? Still, lets not get into a stew about it – I’m sure she’s got a great sue chef (see what we did there?)

"Get in a snit" = Càu nhàu/tức tối và giận dữ.

Ví dụ
Boone left 20 outs for his bullpen to get. No reason to get in a snit about it. Guess what: he had 10 pitchers in the bullpen. He had a day off Monday. His top relievers were not stressed the previous day. They had played four games in the previous 13 games.

I just don’t see it that way. I want to know how black folks feel about issues. I do not think a white guy perspective is totally objective. We’ve have this problem for a long time and everytime blacks have a say about something, some white folks get in a snit about it.

Trump, don’t get in a snit just because everyone in Greenland and Denmark blew off your idea about the U.S. buying Greenland. Do what any good real estate guy does when he gets a “not interested, you’ve got to be kidding” reply to an unsolicited buy-out proposal. Make them an offer. A serious offer. An offer that can’t be ignored. An offer that’s really hard to reject.

"Poison them against" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ben White on Unsplash

"Poison someone against someone/something" nghĩa là nói xấu, đầu độc một người để người đó có cái nhìn tiêu cực, căm ghét hoặc coi thường một người nào đó/cái gì đó khác.

Ví dụ
Divorcing parents could lose custody (quyền chăm sóc) or be denied contact with their children if they attempt to poison them against their former partner, under the rules of a new pilot scheme (kế hoạch thí điểm).

Whereas in 2016 likely Republican voters were fed fake stories about Hillary Clinton being corrupt and dishonest, the 2020 electorate may get stories that poison them against centrist candidates like Joe Biden, along with fearmongering stories about candidates like Elizabeth Warren wanting to destroy the stock market.

My own parents had a horrific divorce. I don’t want my kids to go through (trải qua) what I did. But as they get older, they want to talk more about the differences between their dad and me, which is not surprising—they are trying to figure out the type of people they want to be! While I don’t want to “poison” them against their dad, I also will not give up on the values I hold dear.

"Get in wrong with (someone)" = Làm điều sai với ai -> Trở nên không thích ai hoặc làm điều khiến họ tức giận hoặc bị cảm thấy bị xúc phạm.

Ví dụ
The first Mirror's Edge and its sequel star is a courier named Faith Connors who gets in wrong with the authoritative, city bureaucracy (quan lại, công chức).

As the story begins, he’s been released early because a federal prosecutor wants him to testify against his beloved brother, who got in wrong with the mob (băng nhóm tội phạm). If Nate does, his brother – now old and ill – goes to jail. If he doesn’t – and flees to Canada, his plan – Grace who’s just been turned over to him, will be sent back to foster care.

Sir Alex Ferguson rarely gets in wrong with his new signings and those that he has never last two seasons at the Theatre of Dreams. Fergie bought Berbatov in 2008 for a fee of £30.75 million and let us not forget this is the same man that since day one of his managerial career has vowed never to pay over the odds for a player and turned down signing Ronaldinho because the fee was too high.

"Confuse someone/something with someone else" nghĩa là nhầm lẫn ai/cái gì với ai khác/cái khác.

Ví dụ
Don't ever confuse me with a cockeyed optimist. That's not how I roll. Put me down as a realist (người có óc thực tế). And as a realist, I don't see high school games, matches and meets being contested for the rest of the 2019-20 season.

At first we were nervous about swimming as there were sharks around, but after a while we got used to it. I am still careful and don’t swim at dawn or dusk, or in cloudy water where they might confuse me with their dinner, but snorkelling with sharks became a daily occurrence.

“I apologize again for the third time,” said Lauredo. “The study itself on financing is a foregone conclusion. ‘Don’t confuse me with the facts I’ve already made up my mind.’” He said repeating a concern regarding the task force’s presentiment towards assessment in his estimation.

“To have this mountaintop barn where we can go and have the idea that playing together is best and get in there and do that in a little weird way, it makes it like a show vibe, because the chemistry happens,” bassist Mike Gordon said.

"And when it was his time he was ready, and that's a testament (di chúc, Kinh Thánh) to the older guys, not just me, but all the other guys I shared that locker room with, how close knit (khăng khít, gắn bó) everybody was together. "Get hype" nghĩa là gì?

"Get hype" = Được bay bổng -> Cực kỳ phấn khích về việc gì.

Ví dụ
The team at Crunchyroll just dropped the final trailer for Tower of God — as if we needed another reason to get hype over the anime series.

Thankfully, many celebrities have also made bops that we can march to on our way to the guillotine (máy chém) (after giving them the option to redistribute their wealth, of course—word to Britney Spears). Here is a “playlist” of some of my favorite songs to get hype to in preparation for a protest (many of which were recorded by artists who I have a deep love for).

It's been about two years since Sivan released his sophomore album Bloom to extensive critical and commercial success. He's had the odd feature on songs here and there since 2018, like Charli XCX's "1999" and "2099," but he's managed to stay relatively quiet on the new music front — until now. All it took was one sweep over the sound wave for a Dropbox audio file on Instagram stories for fans to get hype.

"Get credit for" nghĩa là gì?

"Get credit for (something)" = Hưởng công trạng về (việc gì).

Ví dụ
The farmer doesn't get credit for all the wonderful things they contribute to our environment, like growing oxygen-producing plants and trees.

Bob Daisley got co-writing credit -- rightfully -- for the songs on ‘Diary Of A Madman,’ but for years, he didn’t get credit for playing bass on the album. The original album credited Randy Rhoads’ ex-Quiet Riot bandmate Rudy Sarzo (who joined for the tour but didn’t play on the album). Today, that’s been sorted, and rightfully so, as “Believer” features a nasty Daisley bassline that he deserves his credit for.

"They're going to get credit for the work they've done," Brown said. Other states, such as North Carolina, have switched to a pass/fail grading system for high school seniors rather than a numeric or letter grade while schools are closed. Brown said the department discussed the plan with several universities, which helped guide their decisions. "They do not want them to have a pass/fail — they want them to have a numerical grade," Brown said.

"Get cracking" nghĩa là gì?

Nghĩ nát óc. Photo by Mark Cruz

"Get cracking" có từ cracking là xuất sắc, cừ khôi -> từ này nghĩa là hành động nhanh chóng và đầy nhiệt huyết.

Ví dụ
The WHO has called the coronavirus pandemic (đại dịch) the “defining global health crisis (cuộc khủng hoảng y tế toàn cầu) of our time” and reiterated (nói lại, nhắc lại) for all countries to test suspected cases on Tuesday. It’s time for Japan to listen and get cracking on testing.

Malcolm Campbell urged staff to "get cracking" on the projects before the general election in September. "If the projects aren't up and going before the potential change of government, what then?" he said. "Mark my words, that money will go. We've had a politician promise it to us, but he might not be here by the end of the year and that promise will mean nothing after the elections."

It may be tempting to sleep in since you no longer have to report to duty at a specific time, but the hour that you get out of bed can make or break the structure of your entire day. I recommend waking up no later than 9 a.m. This way, you can still eat breakfast and get cracking before mid-morning. Similarly, I recommend going to bed at a decent hour (before midnight, at the very least), so it is easier to get up in the morning. When you wake and sleep at a consistent time each day, this allows for a more structured mindset, overall.

"Gentle giant" nghĩa là gì?

'Gentle giant' = những người trông to lớn, khỏe mạnh nhưng hòa nhã, trầm tính.

Ví dụ
Tributes have been paid to a Sheffield Wednesday superfan described as a ‘gentle giant’ after he passed away aged 59.

Ralph Huff need not remind me of Gilbert McGregor as a basketball standout in Raeford. I watched him play, too, and talented and imposing as he was, Gilbert McGregor was something of a gentle giant.

Brooklyn Justice Hon. Johnny Lee Baynes died on Thursday due to complications related to coronavirus. He is remembered by the legal community as a gentle giant for his size and demeanor (phong thái) in the courtroom.

McCoy Tyner, the piano titan best known for his work in the John Coltrane Quartet, played the Clearwater Jazz Holiday in 1989, and I got to meet him. What do I remember most? When he shook my hand, mine disappeared in his; it was huge! It reminded me of my interview with Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ spectacular tight end Jimmy Giles; my hand disappeared there, too. The other aspect was his warm and gentle nature. McCoy Tyner was truly a gentle giant, although he was not always gentle with those piano keys!

'Gentle as a lamb' = hiền lành như con cừu non -> nghĩa là hiền lành, dịu dàng, hòa nhã.

Ví dụ
To have known George was to witness what a true man should be. Honorable (xứng đáng, mang đến hoặc thể hiện danh dự, danh giá), ethical (đạo đức, (thuộc) luân thường đạo lý), and compassionate (thương hại, thương xót, động lòng thương, động lòng trắc ẩn). He was a man of faith, honoring his God and his fellow man. Strong as an ox, but gentle as a lamb.

“Willie” was an avid (khao khát, háo hức) hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed spending his time outdoors. He was “tough as nails, but gentle as a lamb,” and the type of person to loyally support his family and friends, and would also offer his help to anyone. We give thanks for the life of Jeremy.

Growing up, Dad always encouraged me; he wasn’t an enforcer. He’s as gentle as a lamb. Mum was the opposite. She would force me to go to the gym and eat properly. Dad would just say things like, “You should look after yourself and try to eat healthily.” Actually, he and I are not very good dieters (người ăn kiêng).
