"As a service" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Torsten Dettlaff from Pexels

"(Something) as a service" = cung cấp dịch vụ -> các sản phẩm được triển khai dưới dạng dịch vụ và khách hàng được lựa chọn theo nhu cầu ( tùy biến cao; trả phí theo nhu cầu sử dụng; không phải vận hành, bảo trì, nghiên cứu và phát triển). Nó được thiết kế để đáp ứng sự tùy biến cao theo nhiều nhu cầu của khách hàng. Ví dụ "software as a service" là phầm mềm dạng dịch vụ.

Ví dụ
Almost a year and a half ago BBVA launched (ra mắt) its first Banking as a Service business – BBVA Open Platform – in the U.S.

Platform (nền tảng) as a service is the term given to the collection (sưu tập) of services and solutions (giải pháp) that make use of cloud computing (điện toán đám mây) services in order to create a platform for clients (khách hàng) and users (người dùng) to manage, run, and develop relevant applications (ứng dụng liên quan) while forgoing (bỏ) the extremely complicated (phức tạp) task of creating and maintaining (duy trì) the required infrastructure (cơ sở hạ tầng).

IT organizations (tổ chức) are already familiar with as-a-service offerings, such as software (phần mềm) as a service and infrastructure as a service. The common theme with these offerings is the way in which the technology (công nghệ) is acquired (dành được). The customer doesn't own the technology used to deliver these services but instead is charged for their use. In the case of storage (lưu trữ) as a service (SaaS), this typically means a charge per gigabyte or terabyte per month, based on a tier of performance (trình diễn).

"Streaming service" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by John-Mark Smith from Pexels

"Streaming service" = dịch vụ, nền tảng cho phép truyền phát dữ liệu (âm nhạc, phim ảnh...) tới máy tính và các thiết bị di động thông qua Internet. "Streaming server" là máy chủ được dùng trong truyền phát. "Streaming service" phổ biến hiện nay có Netflix và Spotify.

Ví dụ
The Disney+ streaming service has more than 50 million global subscribers (tài khoản) five months after launching, Disney announced (công bố) yesterday.

For the sake of (vì lợi ích) your sanity (sự đúng đắn) (and ours), we didn't include entirely free streaming services like Crackle, Vudu, Tubi, or anything that streams live TV.

WarnerMedia hoped to launch (ra mắt) its new streaming service HBO Max next month with a reunion special (hội ngộ đặc biệt) for the hit comedy (bộ phim hài ăn khách) “Friends.” It won’t be ready.

The good thing about being trapped (mắc kẹt) at home due to the novel (chủng mới) coronavirus is that you can play music while you work. The bad thing is that you can play music while you work. The sound from streaming services just isn't all that it can be.

"Press into service" nghĩa là gì?

"Press (someone or something) into service" = ép làm ->dùng ai/cái gì vì cấp bách cần đến, trưng dụng.

Ví dụ
A number of hotels in Apia have been pressed into service as quarantine facilities (cơ sở cách ly).

A bylaw banning (luật cấm) single-use plastic bags (túi nilon dùng một lần) went into effect (hiệu lực) on July 1, 2019. But Salmon Arm Mayor Alan Harrison said the city is in support plastic bags being pressed back into service.

Flooded with calls, police decided to press into service staff from Parihar (the family counselling (tư vấn) centre that runs the helpline (đường dây trợ giúp) along with police), who were working from home due to the lockdown.

Diplomatic (ngoại giao) staff around the world have been pressed into service trying to source equipment (thiết bị), Hancock said, with Whitehall officials (quan chức) in London trying to organise transporting (vận chuyển) it to the UK.

"Daily grind" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: averie woodard on Unsplash

"Daily grind" -> nghĩa là những công việc hằng ngày tẻ nhạt.

Ví dụ
I have been an Emergency Medicine Physician for almost 20 years. I have worked through numerous disasters (thảm họa), and I’m used to the daily grind of heart attacks, gunshots, strokes, flu, traumas, and more. It’s par for the course in my field.

Ethical roast sets ground rules for the daily grind. Dublin social enterprise hopes to perk up caffeine-hungry workplaces and homes with speciality coffees and a fairer supply chain for impoverished (nghèo khó) farmers, writes Katy McGuinness.

My coronavirus quarantine — daily grind brought to a halt (tạm dừng). After a ski (trượt tuyết) trip in Austria, during which he had direct contact with people who tested positive (dương tính) for COVID-19, DW's Peter Koppen was ordered to quarantine himself at home for two weeks. He shares his experiences.

"A mug's game" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Casey Horner on Unsplash

"A mug's game" = trò chơi của thằng ngốc -> nghĩa là công việc hoặc hoạt động ngu ngốc, nguy hiểm, dẫn tới hậu quả xấu.

Ví dụ
When the final cathartic plunge came in March 2009, nearly five months after the initial shock, nobody was talking about “buying opportunities” or “v-shaped recoveries.” The once-hopeful bulls had capitulated (đầu hàng), and the conventional wisdom was that stocks were a mug’s game.

Trying to pick the bottom of the market may be a mug’s game, but I’m a glass-half-full (cốc nước đầy một nửa - người lạc quan) kind of guy – in this case anyway. The difference in this bear market is the unprecedented (chưa từng thấy) level of fiscal (tài chính) and monetary (tiền tệ) stimulus that’s being pumped through the financial system.

Forecasting (dự đoán) productivity growth, meanwhile, is a mug’s game. We cannot reinvent antibiotics (thuốc kháng sinh) or chemical engineering, but many of the most productive inventions are not about big new breakthroughs; they are about working out how to use old inventions better.

"Give lip service to" nghĩa là gì?

Không nghe cave kể chuyện, không nghe nghiện trình bày. Photo by Cleyder Duque from Pexels

"Give/pay lip service to" -> nghĩa là lời nói đãi bôi, lời nói cửa miệng, lời nói không thành thật.

Ví dụ
My hope is that we no longer give lip service to the lessons learned (bài học rút ra) from these times.

Politicians (chính trị gia) pay lip service to these forecasts (dự báo) because they don't know what to believe in anymore.

If your white paper (bạch thư), with the best intentions (mục đích) to serve the public, does not give lip service to some parts of his half-truths and fake facts, the paper will be ignored (bỏ qua). That’s my explanation (giải thích) for the capitulating concession (nhượng bộ) in the open letter.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP - bộ Lao động và Hưu trí) has announced another new measure (phương pháp) in relation to coronavirus (Covid-19). One charity (tổ chức từ thiện) has welcomed the move (động thái). But in reality, the department has done nothing more than give lip service to millions of people. As the new policy chính sách) just papers over the cracks of a failing system (hệ thống lỗi).

"Out of service" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ricardo Esquivel from Pexels

"Out of service" nghĩa là ngưng hoạt động, không sử dụng được.

Ví dụ
The outdoor warning siren (còi báo động) at McKee Road and Alabama 251 is currently out of service.

Winnipeg Transit takes buses out of service after driver has flu-like symptoms (triệu chứng giống cúm).

Orange Line train (tàu) out of service after person reportedly licked (liếm) it amid (trong bối cảnh) coronavirus warnings (cảnh báo).

The state Department of Transportation (Bộ Giao thông Vận tải) announced Thursday that the Real McCoy II Ferry will be out of service for an extended period of time (thời gian dài) due to an unexpected mechanical failure (sự cố máy móc bất ngờ) that happened that morning.

"Made of money" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Micheile Henderson on Unsplash

"Made of money" = làm bằng tiền -> nghĩa là có rất nhiều tiền, rất giàu.

Ví dụ
Like many students at Case Western Reserve University, financial aid (hỗ trợ) was a major component (bộ phận cấu thành) in my college decision. As the son of musicians—the classical kind, not the high-dollar studio-touring kind—I’m not exactly made of money.

There is, however, another option (lựa chọn) for parents who aren't made of money. Tesco has copies for £45, Asda for £44. With many people lining up supermarket deliveries, it's easy enough to add one to the basket.

Those who are made of money to spend on Netflix already know what to do. The rest of us? On behalf (thay mặt) of the World Health Organisation, The African Union, your ancestors (tổ tiên) and on my own behalf, I would like to urge you to avoid large social gatherings where infection is likely to spread and stay at home watching old movies.

"Warts and all" nghĩa là gì?

chúng ta nên chấp nhận cả cái hay cái dở của nhạc sĩ thiên tài Beethoven. photo courtesy Spencer Means.

'Warts and all' = 'including features or qualities that are not appealing or attractive' -> nghĩa là những cái hay cái dở.

Ví dụ
When I was a teenager, I had a tendency (khuynh hướng) to tweet my thoughts incessantly (không ngừng). I recognised, along with the help of my mates, that allowing the world to regularly peek into my brain, warts and all, wasn’t the best for me or my wellbeing. Ever since, I’ve written my thoughts and feelings down on anything I could get my hands on.

Major efforts are afoot in engineering to develop ventilators to assist in what is expected to be a shortfall. The same kind of innovation in industry could make great strides in developing a proper, and possibly transformative, testing regime. One way or the other, the public deserves to know the full story, warts and all, at a time when reserves of national solidarity are being called upon to serve the greater good.

Any fears I had about delving too closely into his life, warts and all, were dispelled the night I heard the Vienna Symphony recreate the epic (đậm chất sử thi) 1808 concert Beethoven had given at the Theater an der Wien. Listening to his “Pastoral” Symphony that night, the bird calls he wrote for the woodwinds took me back to the bird songs I’d heard retracing his footsteps on the Beethovengang. Its rustic dance rhythms reminded me of Mayer am Pfarrplatz, the old wine tavern. The five-hour concert flew by. Knowing more, I decided, made me appreciate him more, not less.

* The tombs of Beethoven and Schubert flank a memorial to Mozart in the Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery), Vienna. Despite the memorial, Mozart is not buried here, but rather in St. Marx Cemetery (Sankt Marxer Friedhof) in Vienna's Landstraße District, although the exact location of his remains within the cemetery is not known. These three giants of Western music made their homes and careers in Vienna, but only Schubert was a native of the city. Mozart was born in Salzburg, Beethoven in Bonn.

"Own up to" nghĩa là gì?

tây ban nha phải thừa nhận vết nhơ thực dân của mình*. photo courtesy wikipedia.

'Own up to' = 'admit or confess to having done something wrong or embarrassing'; nghĩa là thừa nhận điều gì sai lầm, đáng xấu hổ, xấu xa.

Ví dụ
Both China and the WHO must own up to their own actions -- and inactions -- with this deadly disease that helped to bring the world to a standstill (bế tắc; dừng lại, đứng lại).

Neither geography nor the statute of limitations should be an excuse for Spain not to own up to its past and atone (chuộc lỗi; dàn xếp, hòa giải) for its colonial sins (những tội ác thời thực dân). One possibility is for Spain to establish college-level scholarships at Spanish universities for CHamoru descendants (hậu duệ) as compensation (đền bù, bồi thường).

I appreciated the candor of the Pasqualati House, a museum in one of his main Vienna homes. It acknowledged that there had been debate about which rooms Beethoven had actually occupied — and owned up to its tainted past (vết nhơ quá khứ), noting that the Nazis had evicted (trục xuất, đẩy ra đường) the Jewish family that lived there to create the museum, and some were killed in Auschwitz.

This government has to own up to the reality that even the food card distribution system will not effectively meet the needs of those requiring help in the manner it is being undertaken. It is totally unethical for government to boast they spent millions on food relief when in reality they only gave 197 food cards to each member of parliament with a list of thousands of children in each constituency that require assistance, essentially excluding thousands.

"Out of commission" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Radek Grzybowski on Unsplash.

"Out of commission" = "to make inoperative" nghĩa là không hoạt động.

Ví dụ
Unknown epidemiological links (mối liên kết dịch tễ học không rõ ràng) and a health dept practically out of commission as cases keep soaring (đạt mức cao, ở rất cao).

With the truck now out of commission until it gets repaired, the food bank is looking for other ways to store and transport food – especially with the Easter holiday coming up.

Officials in New Mexico’s largest city are warning that copper wiring thefts (ăn trộm dây đồng) have put some street lights out of commission, resulting in dangerous conditions for pedestrians and drivers.

Plans to renovate the city’s concert hall, the Beethovenhalle, for the anniversary went awry, leaving it out of commission for the big year, and all its creative Beethoven programming.
