But such is the force of habit, that (to the great annoyance (khó chịu) of his family, who wished him to "sink the shop”) he was always unhappy unless in the cellar (hầm) measuring his own coals.

Paul: "My lady, I mean, ordered me to give you a twitch (kéo, giật) of the elbow every time you spoke of the shop."
"A twitch! What for?" asked Paul.
“To make you remember to sink the shop, sir, now you are a great man,” answered Tim.

"Knocking shop" nghĩa là nhà thổ, nhà chứa (cách nói hài hước ở Anh).

Ví dụ
“We get a few giggles (cười khúc khích) when we say the name, The Galway Hooker,” ARK group bar manager James Connolly told Australian Bartender. “Believe it or not, it’s not an Irish knocking shop but actually a type of fishing boat famous from that part of the world.”

Aged eight he moved into his aunt Honey’s (real name Handsome Washington) brothel (nhà chứa) in Augusta, Georgia, where he perfected his “buck dance” – a solo gambol (đùa giỡn) native to North Carolina not unlike tap (quán rượu)– to entertain the troops (đoàn người) and guide them in to the knocking shop.

If you’ve never been camping, I can tell you now - it hurts, it really hurts. That is, unless you go for one of those fancy ‘Glamping’ breaks, whereupon your tent (lều trại) is not really a tent at all, but a luxurious (sang trọng) version of life under canvas (lều) with all the mod-cons (tiện nghi) one might expect in an Algerian knocking shop - or, so I’m told.

Nobody knows when the tide will turn, and I'm pretty sure that everyone wants to get back to some semblance (giống vẻ) of normal. With this in mind I would like to list my opinions of what I might consider placing on my shopping list.

So, with three weeks or more left of being confined (bị giới hạn) to our homes, Alicante’s Guardia Civil have produced a shopping list of what constitutes an ‘essential’ (thiết yeesi) product or service that warrants a ‘justified’ (chính đáng) reason to be out on the street during Spain’s lockdown, for those of you who are still in doubt.

Could you get the Synergy to take you to find the two girls, Sammy and Priyah, they know where they are, I‛ve just been thinking that if we‛re going to leave Eleanor, Dottie and Nichelle to watch the shop here you'll need a bit of female company and this job should be a doddle (việc dễ) so you'll have a bit of spare time to get them trained up while you're hanging about waiting.

"Blue screen of death" = màn xanh chết chóc -> câu châm biếm nói về màn hình xanh hiện lên mỗi khi máy tính dùng hệ điều hành Windows gặp sự cố.

Ví dụ
Many of the Blue Screens of Death are appearing intermittently (từng cơn), requiring a PC reboot, but other users are experiencing a loop of BSOD errors, meaning their computer crashes instantly on every startup.

The infamous (đáng hổ thẹn) Blue Screen of Death, also known as BSOD, has been around for so many years, and just like the rest of Windows features, it also received several revisions throughout multiple generations.

If you are using Windows, you might come across a blue screen of death or BSOD once in a while. BSODs can sometimes refer to some serious problems with your system, but in other situations, it can be small trouble, which can easily be fixed (sửa chữa) if you know what a particular BSOD means.

"Have the goods on him" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Caleb Oquendo on Pexels

"Have the goods on someone" có từ goods là hàng hóa -> cụm từ này nghĩa là có bằng chứng để buộc tội ai đó.

Ví dụ
“For the federal government at this point to become involved in two separate, very serious cases, they must absolutely believe that they have the goods on him,” said Steven Block, a former federal prosecutor (công tố viên) who also served as head of special prosecutions for Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.

We all know the definition (định nghĩa) of insanity (điên cuồng): “Doing the same thing over and over again, each time expecting different results.” That seems to be the Left’s strategy for impeaching (kết tội) President Donald Trump. We continually hear “the walls are closing in on Trump” or “this time we have the goods on him,” and other gleeful expressions of finally getting rid of the president.

I don't think Joe was inside Mario Tabraue's organization (tổ chức) deeply enough to have the goods on him.

shared from fb Tâm Huy Ngô,

(Language learning vs Lanquage acquisition)

Ps.
