"Public display of affection" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Eduardo Pastor on Unsplash

"Public display of affection" (viết tắt là PDA) nghĩa là thể hiện tình cảm nơi công cộng.

Ví dụ
Brody Jenner and Briana Jungwirth have sparked dating rumors (tin đồn) after being pictured together putting on a public display of affection at a beach in Malibu.

"Harry and Meghan were on a visit to Morocco and visited the stunning Atlas Mountains. While watching school children play football, Meghan leant into Harry and lay her head on his shoulder while he looked back at her grinning. It was a spontaneous and lovely moment and the kind of public display of affection that is rare amongst the Royal Family," he said.

"Certain love languages which are prevalent (phổ biến) in the West are much less common in non-Western cultures. For example, in my South Asian culture, directly praising someone is very uncomfortable and often not well received. Instead, praising that person to a third party is more highly valued when they hear about what you said about them through the grapevine. Also, public display of affection between spouses or romantic partners is also a major taboo."

He and his wife Annie, who went by the stage name Cleopatra, would regularly step into their "snake-pit" containing hundreds of the venomous animals and display them to spectators fangs-out.

Developers will also be able to measure each Core Web Vital in JavaScript using standard web APIs and report on each Core Web Vital without writing any code, using the Web Vitals Chrome Extension. The extension makes use of the web-vitals library to measure these metrics and display them to users as they browse the web. The extension can also be helpful in understanding the performance of your websites, your competitor’s websites, and the web at large.

All nine eggs died in the warmer water. The remaining (còn lại) eggs were checked through echo tests. In late January and early February, four babies were hatched (nở ra), and they all looked like 15-centimeter versions of their parents. “It was very difficult to hatch them because of so many unknown things,” Kazuhiro Takamiya, a 45-year-old curator (người phụ trách, người trông nom) at the aquarium, said. “We hope that we can display them to visitors as early as possible.”

"Drift off into la-la land" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Kinga Cichewicz on Unsplash

"Drift off into la-la land" có từ la-la land là trạng thái mơ hồ, mơ mộng, từ drift off là bắt đầu ngủ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đi ngủ.

Ví dụ
If the weed Twitterverse is to be believed, a lot of marijuana (cần sa) users rely on a nightly puff (hút thuốc) or two to drift off into la-la land.

But wait—before you drift off into la-la land, here are some interesting facts about daydreaming (mơ mộng) you may not have known.

Trying out different, soothing (dịu dáng, êm dịu) genres of music such as lo-fi playlists, ballads and even classical pieces can relax your heart rate and make it easier to drift off into la la land.

"Stem the tide" = ngăn dòng nước -> nghĩa là ngăn chặn không cho cái gì tiếp diễn.

Ví dụ
You've probably heard the term ‘flattening (làm phẳng) the curve’ as a way to stem the tide of coronavirus cases. The above video explains what that means.

Call of Duty: Warzone gets two-step authentication (xác nhận hai bước) to stem the tide of cheaters (người chơi ăn gian).

Despite the proclamations (công bố), DeSantis didn’t promptly identify outbreaks in elder care facilities and is now scrambling to stem the tide of cases and deaths, a Palm Beach Post investigation has found.

"A new broom" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Daniel von Appen on Unsplash

"A new broom" = cây chổi mới -> nghĩa là người được tuyển vào vị trí cấp cao với hi vọng sẽ đem lại nhiều thay đổi.

Ví dụ
When even Buffett proves to be mortal, it is always possible that a new broom will reverse the policy of buying back shares and will pay a dividend (cổ tức) instead.

Will a new broom at the head of the police force clean the Augean Stables? Much of this will be determined (xác định) by the spine and personality of the new Commissioner of Police.

Surely bringing in a new broom from outside the business was the best way to start this journey. Surely the mammoth task of reforming (cải cách) the culture of a business in the sort of position that IOOF finds itself in is best led by someone who is not a product of that culture.

"The mammoth task" có từ mammoth là con voi ma mút -> cụm từ này nghĩa là công việc khó khăn cần nhiều cố gắng để hoàn thành.

Ví dụ
The mammoth task to re-open schools in Wales has been laid out (đặt ra) with a myriad (vô số) of changes, adjustments and considerations needing to be mapped out (lên kế hoạch) in the coming weeks.

The mammoth task facing firefighters trying to extinguish the blazing (nóng rực) inferno (hỏa ngục) which has ravaged a Doncaster beauty spot shows no sign of letting up. Since last Sunday, crews have been battling to control the flames and extinguish all the embers on Hatfield Moors.

The report raised concerns over staffing and funds within the department, which faces the mammoth task of managing the new normal for schools and planning ahead in a shifting landscape.

"One over the eight" nghĩa là gì?

Từ từ thôi. Photo courtesy: Cycling Saint

"One over the eight" = quá tám -> nghĩa là say tí bỉ.

Don't listen to him. You can see he's had one over eight!

I suppose it wasn’t often that the boys of Market Snodsbury Grammar School came across a man public-spirited enough to call their head master a silly ass, and they showed their appreciation in no uncertain manner. Gussie may have been one over the eight, but as far as the majority of those present were concerned he was sitting on top of the world.

McDowell’s interests had turned to jazz while he was a student at the Chelsea School of Art in London in the 1950s. He took up (bắt đầu) the trombone and with fellow students formed a band as “an art school Dadaist lark”. It was known by a range of names, including Paul McDowell and his Gentlemen Ravers. Over several years, this group evolved into the Temperance Seven, which had nine members, so that it could be “one over the eight” (a demotic (bình dân) term for intoxication).

"New York minute" nghĩa là gì?

Nhanh đến chóng cả mặt. Photo courtesy: kenkantor

"New York minute" = phút giây New York -> nghĩa là ngay lập tức, rất nhanh và không chần chừ. Cụm này bắt nguồn từ hình ảnh New York trong mắt người dân thành phố khác là một thành phố bận rộn, nhộn nhịp nên mọi việc diễn ra rất nhanh.

Ví dụ
If you want to bask in (đắm mình) the glow of 70 minutes that flash by in a New York minute, spend some time with Kelli O’Hara.

New York is now live and will be regularly updated with new playlist curations (chọn lọc và biên tập) and recommendations. Whether you're interested in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra or music that's Uniquely The Bronx, you can find it faster than a New York minute on the hub.

In the mid-20th century, three young phenoms (hiện tượng) had New York abuzz (ồn ào) with baseball. With Mathew Barzal, Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko, the NHL has the pieces in place for a similar takeover of the New York City-area sports scene. Whether their talent becomes the next New York City miracle or fades in a New York minute remains to be seen. But this much is for sure: the region hasn’t seen this much hype about three young stars from the same league in more than 60 years.

"Born on third base but believes they hit a triple" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Anastase Maragos on Unsplash

The Irish, Italians and Jews all have people in their community who don’t identify with their heritage (di sản) or who think they’re better than others in their tribe (bộ tộc), when they’re really just better off. These are the folks who were born on third base but tell themselves they hit a triple.

Among the half-dozen people testifying (làm chứng) against the bill (dự luật) Wednesday was Rabbi Dan Fink of Boise. Fink, speaking on behalf of the Interfaith Alliance, said, “Folks, if you think we are in a place where we do not need affirmative (khẳng định) action, you were born on third base, and you think you hit a triple.”

Any governor (thống đốc) who gets away with bankruptcy (phá sản) will be committing political suicide. So, this virus is a perfect opportunity for Pritzker to get his cake and eat the whole thing, too. He’s worth $3.5 billion, what does he care if you lose your small business or job? The man was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple.

"I believe we've met" nghĩa là gì?

"(One) believe we've met" = tôi tin rằng chúng ta từng gặp nhau rồi -> sử dụng khi chào hỏi, gặp gỡ ai.

Ví dụ
I believe we've met before; you helped me move, did you?

Going out to join them, I extended a hand to Pierre, who shook it warmly as if we were old friends. 'I don't believe we've met, sir,' he said, however, introducing himself to me as if for the first time. 'Pierre de Fredi.'

He wondered how well the two had become acquainted during his convalescence (kỳ dưỡng bệnh), and then wondered why he cared. “And my aide, Johnny,” he continued. “And I believe you've met Corporal Kroger and Private Tate.”

“By securing high-tech equipment (thiết bị), implementing safety procedures (quy trình an toàn) and working closely with the state to determine a sensible reopen date, we believe we’ve met the challenge of creating a safe environment under the current conditions,” Mr. Kahn said.

"Believe it or not" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ryan Miguel Capili from Pexels

"Believe it or not" nghĩa là tin hay không thì tùy, dù bạn có tin hay không thì đó vẫn là sự thật. Cụm từ xuất hiện từ những năm 1800, đến năm 1918, cụm từ trở thành tên bài hát title dành cho sê-ri phim hoạt hình "The Greatest American Hero".

Ví dụ
Believe it or not, 75.2% of you said your home is cleaner during the quarantine while 24.8% say it's less tidy

Does ghost exist or not? This discussion has been happening from ages, to believe it or not is completely personal choice.

Believe it or not, about 250 orders (đơn đặt hàng) had already been placed until Thursday night. That's 250 life-sized cutouts that will be returned to their purchasers when this madness ends.

Jerry Stiller was one of those mensches (người chính trực) from an earlier era who is almost hard to believe in now, when they’re as startling to encounter as a member of a species thought to be extinct (tuyệt chủng) ambling (đi thong thả) into your living room. But believe it or not, there used to be an American strain of decency (đoan trang), even serious virtue, running through the culture. If you read up on the Civil War to any extent, you encounter a lot of it.

"Believe you me" nghĩa là gì?

"Believe you me!" có nghĩa nhấn mạnh là hãy thực sự tin tôi.

Ví dụ
There was a lot of yelling and screaming at us, and believe you me, I was scared.

What we need is to set up an integrated (hội nhập) and more comprehensive (toàn diện) structure so that all countries in the world – but particularly in Africa - are better prepared for the next pandemic. Because believe you me - there's going to be a next one.

But believe you me, another couple of weeks of this and we’re going to see some spikes (nhánh) of an entirely different nature, as those living alone, or struggling with addictions (nghiện ngập) or mental health issues, succumb to (chịu thua) their demons.

“All nationals who are not in T&T and want to return, you will be permitted (được phép) to return, as we’ve said and as I will repeat here this morning, what we are doing is very carefully managing the process and believe you me, we do understand the difficulties that each and every one of you nationals face who are outside of T&T wanting to return as well as your families and what it is you are going through,” Young said.

"The liar is not believed when he tells the truth" nghĩa là gì?

"The/a liar is not believed when he tells the truth" = đã là kẻ dối trá thì nói gì cũng chẳng ai tin -> nghĩa là khi bạn đã mang tiếng là kẻ nói dối thì nói gì cũng vô ích thôi, cho dù đó là sự thật. Câu nói được đúc kết từ chuyện cổ tích "Cậu bé chăn cừu".

Ví dụ
What does a liar gain by his lying? Not to be believed when he tells the truth.

As bluntly (thẳng thừng) stated by the Roman statesman (chính khách) Cicero, “A liar is not believed even when he tells the truth.” One seemingly harmless (vô hại) way in which a young person's personal reputation may be tarnished (vết nhơ) is failing to keep what appear to be small promis.

A shady (mờ ám) person never produces a bright life. Herbert Casson said, “Show me a liar and I will show you a thief.” A liar will not be believed even though he tells the truth. George Bernard Shaw said, “The liar's punishment (hình phạt) is not in the least that he is not believed, but that he cannot believe anyone else."

The moral (đạo đức) is stated at the end of the fable (truyện ngụ ngôn) as, “Even when liars tell the truth, they are never believed. The liar will lie once, twice, and then perish (mất phẩm chất) when he tells the truth.” In other words, it does not take many lies to make a liar, and when someone is considered a liar, this person suffers the consequences.

"Can hardly believe my eyes" nghĩa là gì?

Khá tò mò anh ta nhìn thấy gì :D. Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels

"(One) can hardly/scarcely believe (one's) eyes" nghĩa là những gì vừa chứng kiến thật khó tin.

Ví dụ
When Scott Ballif first pulled up to the Yampa Valley Golf Course he could barely believe his eyes. The first putting practice green he saw would have been more properly called a “putting yellow.”

Then in the 52nd minute, the moment arises. I’ve been playing for set pieces and when Plattenhardt whips in a free kick (đá tự do) towards an unmarked Harry Kane, I can scarcely believe my eyes. But just as I watch the ball sailing past Ederson, the Brazilian jolts up (đấm móc) an arm at the last minute to tip it over. I slam back in my seat with a bang.

Then, out of anxiety (lo lắng), I checked my email. There was a message there. Someone had found my songs on SoundCloud and sent me an email telling me that they loved my songs and to keep up the good work. It couldn’t have come at a better moment. The timing was uncanny (lạ kỳ). I had never gotten an email from anyone about my music before. I could hardly believe my eyes.

Thu Phương

"Not believe my ears" nghĩa là gì?

Speechless. Photo by Mason Kimbarovsky on Unsplash

"Not believe one's ears" = không thể tin vào tai mình -> nghĩa là sốc, ngạc nhiên vì những điều vừa nghe thấy.

Ví dụ
“I think I screamed when I found out. I was just ecstatic (ngây ngất). I couldn’t believe my ears. It’s such an incredible opportunity,” Victoria said.

For my birthday I got the usual sniggering cards (bài). One (three monkeys on the front) said: “Couldn’t believe my eyes. Couldn’t believe my ears. Couldn’t believe how old you are!”

I couldn't believe my ears. While we were all planning to go to college, thinking of flights of fancy, dreams of where we'd be in a few short years, he'd gone and left us behind. Made a decision without talking to any of us, like we didn't matter.

“I could not believe my ears that he would stoop (khom lưng) so low to tell folks what they should do, how they should think, and what it means to be black. That is as arrogant (kiêu ngạo), and offensive, and demeaning (hạ thấp mình) as I can imagine in this time that we’re living,” Scott said.
