"Screw the pooch" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Zach Castillo on Unsplash

"Screw the pooch" có screw (up) là xử lý một tình thế rất kém -> nghĩa là gây ra lỗi lầm lớn, làm hỏng việc.

Ví dụ
The process of making beer, however, is an entirely different deal. It’s much safer. Even the most unskilled homebrewer (nhà nấu bia) probably isn’t going to screw the pooch bad enough to produce a brew toxic (độc hại) enough to get someone sick or put them six feet in the ground.

And then, too, there was “screw the pooch.” A cleaned-up version of a decidedly coarser (tục tĩu) term, it meant, in the pilot’s argot, to crash your jet or lose your spacecraft or do anything else that amounted to not flying your mission as you were expected to fly it. We all screw the pooch sometimes—at work; in our relationships; with our finances.

The Houston Astros are good at baseball–even better when they know what pitches are coming–but they screw the pooch when it comes to crisis (khủng hoảng) management.

"That's a new one on me" nghĩa là gì?

Trời ơi, xịn quá vậy! Photo courtesy: rickmontana83

"That's a new one on me" = vụ này mới à nha -> biểu lộ sự ngạc nhiên khi nghe một tin tức mới lạ.

Ví dụ
While in the car Monday morning, I happened to tune in (bắt trúng đài) to Mississippi Public Broadcasting; about the first words I heard were "barbecue sundae." Now, I admit, that's a new one on me. (Some of you are saying, "Where've you been?")

I picked the grocery option. Trader Joe’s seemed to be the most popular grocery chain mentioned in the comments. Field of Greens was mentioned. That’s a new one on me, but apparently there’s one in Mooresville.

Coming to a Corolla near you? Not for a while, I expect. Same goes for seat kinetics (ghế mang tính động năng), which periodically adjusts the seat position as you drive, moving the seat back, height and angle seemingly at random. That's a new one on me.

"Nice work if you can get it" nghĩa là gì?

"Nice work if you can get it" -> cụm từ này dùng để diễn đạt sự ghen tỵ/đố kỵ với ai có công việc ngon lành và lương cao hơn mình (trúng mánh nhé! vớ bở nhé!)

Ví dụ
Stephen Curry, Dwight Howard, Hakeem Olajuwon and Dirk Nowitzki are also unsurprisingly among the NBA’s richest, with their wealth encompassing everything from fashion lines to luxury estates (đẳng cấp, tài sản xa xỉ). Nice work if you can get it! Enjoyed this? Check out our list of the 10 most popular NBA arenas too.

In case you’re wondering (you’re not), Eminger kicked around the league for another four years, and he was out of the NHL before he turned 30. He made just a tad over $10 million in his career. Nice work if you can get it. The Flyers, meanwhile, probably wish they had just held on to that draft pick, especially if it would have netted them John Carlson.

“Years of doing voiceover (thuyết minh), I can look at a sentence, and if you tell me, ‘We need this in six seconds,’ I can tell you whether or not I can do it in six seconds, five seconds, four seconds, based on how it looks … Truly, it sounds stupid but you’ve got to use your imagination, distance from other characters… A lot of things going at once. It’s weirdly exhausting,” he said on Shepard’s podcast. Other voice-over actors say it’s nice work if you can get it, but voice acting is not easy to break into at all.

"Mess with the bull and you get the horns" nghĩa là gì?

"Mess with the bull and you get the horns" = chọc tức con bò đực thì sẽ bị húc thôi -> nghĩa là nếu bạn chọc giận ai đó thì bạn sẽ bị trả thù lại.

Ví dụ
Mess with the bull and you get the horns, right? For mere mortals (nguy đến tính mạng, gây chết), that’s certainly true. For Cody Webster of Wayne, not only does he mess with the bull, he makes a living by doing so.

“Well, you mess with the bull and you get the horns — Mother Nature can be a bitch,” Swan concluded. “I bet you when they get it on, music just spontaneously (tự ý, tự nhiên) plays and doves just appear out of nowhere,” he shot back.

“Take the bull by the horns” is a good one. Face your troubles head on. Yet a similar saying warns against careless assertiveness (sự khẳng định, quả quyết): “Mess with the bull and you get the horns.” That expression was made particularly popular in classic films like The Breakfast Club and Some Kind of Wonderful.

"He will get his" nghĩa là gì?

"(One) will get (one's)" -> nghĩa là sẽ nhận sự trừng phạt/hậu quả xứng đáng với việc mình đã gây ra.

Ví dụ
He cheated on his ex-wife send married the woman he was cheating with. I believe he will get his in the end.

Don Warren said it would be meaningful for the family and for his nephew’s memory if police do manage to make an arrest but that, ultimately, he takes comfort in another thought. “I’d like to see them get their justice,” he said. “But even if they don’t arrest him, I know he will get his in the end. You can’t live on peacefully after something like that.”

“Nobody made you move,” Chris Mitchell said. “Nobody made you move.” “How do you keep saying nobody made me move?” Diagiantomasso said. “This man came to the house and said I had to get out with a court order.” “Dave you voluntarily moved and you never spoke to me,” Mitchell said. “You know where my office is.” David now left frustrated under a new rook still sorting everything out. “He took me for a fool,” Diagiantomasso said. “He will get his in the end.” David tells News 4 he has hired a lawyer. According to court documents, Mitchell was charged with a felony forgery (giả mạo trọng tội) of a home deed.

"Get an eyeful" nghĩa là gì?

"Get an eyeful" = có được người đàn bà hấp dẫn/thấy cảnh hấp dẫn -> nghĩa là thấy hoặc nhìn cái gì với ánh mắt ngạc nhiên và bất ngờ.

Ví dụ
Lake Travis residents get an eyeful as Thunderbirds fly overhead in salute (để chào) to frontline workers.

“Caught in the Act” a second season episode has the Dunphy kids surprise their parents with breakfast in bed – and they get an eyeful.

The nonprofit Oregon Observatory is dedicated to providing public access to the heavens. Unlike most research observatories (đài thiên văn) where visitors admire telescopes (kính thiên văn) from afar, it encourages aspiring astronomers (nhà thiên văn học) to get an eyeful through its scopes, typically 12 to 15 on a given night. Celestial (thuộc vũ trụ) bodies are the stars of the show. And they’re easy to spot, thanks to clear air and the darkness; Sunriver, the surrounding resort town, has a stringent lighting ordinance (sắc lệnh, quy định ánh sáng nghiêm ngặt) that protects the night sky from light pollution (ô nhiễm ánh sáng).

"Go along to get along" nghĩa là gì?

"Go along to get along" = đi theo để có quan hệ tốt với -> nghĩa là làm cho phù hợp với/đúng chuẩn mực với những mong muốn chung của mọi người để không làm nguy hiểm đến an ninh hay phá hoại đồ đạc/của cải của ai cả.

Ví dụ
Unlike primitive societies (xã hội nguyên thủy) where life is uncertain, a modern society will preserve your life and freedom as long as you go along to get along, and that is a good thing. This was Rousseau’s social compact and it’s still an influential idea. It went further.

I love what Pencil Preaching brought to the fore in the resistance to the Babylonians. However, this part of the article troubles me: "Early Christians faced similar pressures to go along to get along in the Roman Empire, to accept cultural dominance (sự hội, ưu thế văn hóa) and even cosmic (có trật tự, hài hòa) claims about divine rulers and gods who needed worship to hold the political order together."

Bryan DuVal Cubero(pictured above): I was a U.S. Army Veteran Airborne Paratrooper, Private Security Contractor (retired), College Graduate, Union member, Hispanic-American, Resident of Maryland, born and raised in Washington D.C. and a strict Constitutionalist. I want freedom for all citizens in Maryland and the United States. No exceptions and equal rights (quyền bình đẳng) and protection for all regardless of race (chủng tộc), creed (tín ngưỡng), color (màu da) or ethnicity (nguồn gốc). I have common sense, Good Ideas, I will vote the way the voters want me to vote, because I work for them, I'll fight for term limits and I will self impose term limits on myself. I work hard and despise corruption (tham nhũng) in the government, I don’t go along to get along. I will fight to make the government smaller and more efficient so as to divert tax dollars to worthy/needed projects/programs.As an elected official you will never have to listen to me or do what I say. I will listen and do what you want and vote as you want me to vote on the issues that are important to the voters in the 5th district of Maryland.

"Write if you get work" nghĩa là gì?

"Write if you get work" -> theo nghĩa cổ thì cụm từ này dùng để chào tạm biệt một cách gần gũi và thân thiết tương tự với "Good-bye, call me sometime". Cụm từ này được dùng phổ biến trong những năm 1940s trong một chương trình radio "Matinee with Bob and Ray" và nó được dùng như là cách kết thúc tin nhắn mang tính thương hiệu của họ.

Ví dụ
And then there were the boys’ unforgettable signoffs (cách kết thúc tin nhắn): “This is Ray Goulding, reminding you to write if you get work.” “And Bob Elliott, reminding you to hang by your thumbs.”

Check all details related to your bank plus financial matters about insurance issues, shared property, taxes and debt because something might head off into left field if you’re not watching. (“Goodbye! Write if you get work!”) Little surprises are popping up everywhere with everyone today.

Like radio comedy itself, they began as a kind of rumor to me; my father used to like to repeat their sign-off line, “Write if you get work…. and hang by your thumbs.” Wally Ballou, the roving reporter played by Elliott, whose broadcasts always began halfway into his first name ("--ly Ballou here”), was a name I knew long before I ever heard that character, “winner of over seven international diction awards,” speak.

"The biter gets bit" nghĩa là gì?

"The biter gets bit/the biter bit" = người cắn lại bị cắn -> nghĩa là người làm việc xấu thì sẽ chịu đau khổ và tai họa tương tự với hành động mình đã gây ra; 'bợm già mắc bẫy cò ke'.

Ví dụ
It isn’t a surprise any longer when players dive in the hope of winning a cheap free-kick (or penalty), but the repeat offenders might have to understand there is zero sympathy (không thông cảm) when the biter gets bit.

On the other hand, Lee Jang Woo is in talks to play the role of architect Woo Jae Hee. He’s a straightforward (thẳng thắn) man who easily gets angry, and at the same time, he’s described as handsome, smart, and so overly confident that he is often seen as arrogant (kiêu ngạo). He often becomes the biter bit, but he skillfully gets himself out of these situations by pretending it was all planned from the beginning. At work, he is extremely sensitive about small details.

The glee at the turn in Warner’s batting affairs, then, has had a moral undertone: he is the transgressor (người vi phạm, tội nhân) caught up with, the biter bit. And this is, of course, an illusion (ảo tưởng, ảo giác). Warner’s dismissals (sự sa thải) have nothing to do with his being bad, or flash, or rich, or any of the other assumptions harboured about him, which seem at times to personalise more general objections to the state of the modern cricket, or sportsmanship, or Australia, or masculinity (tính chất đàn ông), or whatever floats your boat. They are part of cricket’s currents, not to be averted (ngăn chặn, tránh) by piety (lòng hiếu thảo, mộ đạo), penance (sự ăn năn, hối lỗi) or self-abasement (sự tự hạ mình), and will resolve as these things usually do, through the swirl of skill, conditions, and chance.

"Out to get" nghĩa là gì?

"Out to get (one)" = ra ngoài để bắt ai -> nghĩa là có ý định hãm hại ai.

Ví dụ
Flynn case shows James Comey, FBI leaders were 'out to get' the Trump administration.

THE ‘MURDER HORNET’ IS OUT TO GET BEES, NOT HUMANS. SO WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL FREAKING OUT (sốc, sợ hãi) OVER IT?

“It has been out to get him since the moment he succeeded in doing what they all believed was impossible, taking the UK out of the EU.”

When he re-offended, he was living with his long-time girlfriend in the home. After he was incarcerated (bị bỏ tù, tống giam), she took everything from the home and left. He lost the house at that time. So he literally has nothing. Nothing is ever his fault, everyone is out to get him. Or so he says.

"Not get a look in" nghĩa là gì?

"Not get a look in" = không được ngó/xía vào -> nghĩa là không có cơ hội làm gì hoặc không thể thể hiện khả năng của mình về lĩnh vực nào đó.

Ví dụ
Allen’s functional play brings us to Lock, who completed his second post-injury week of practice on Friday. Is the clock even ticking until Lock gets a chance? Fangio said on Wednesday that it’s not “vitally important,” for Lock to play this year. It would be a tough sell to the fan base if the Broncos are out of playoff contention and Lock doesn’t get a look in December.

When it comes to burgers we're spoilt for choice here in Leicester. But if you're hankering for something a little more gourmet (người sành ăn) than a quick cheeseburger to go, where should you be heading? We put it to our readers - and something of a bunfight (tiệc ngọt, tiệc trà) followed. Because when it comes to the city's best burgers, there's some pretty strong opinions on which takes the crown - and the likes of McDonald's and Burger King really don't get a look in.

“My thesis has always been, be all things to all people in so far as there will be cycling declines in touring and when the Australian dollar is doing it really tough. And the agents and managers demand ridiculous money because and AEG or Live Nation does a global deal with an artist and we don’t get a look in. so we’ve branched out, we’re a proudly Australian company. We’re touring all sorts of different stuff in Asia. This week, we’re promoting the Brazil football team vs South Korea in Abu Dhabi. We do that because we’re in the content game.”

"More you get, the more you want" nghĩa là gì?

Hạnh phúc là biết thỏa mãn với những gì mình có. Photo by Alex Blăjan

"More you get, the more you want" = càng có lại càng muốn thêm nữa -> thành ngữ này nghĩa là con người ta thường không bao giờ thỏa mãn với những gì đang có.

Ví dụ
The more you get the more you want, is a symptom (triệu chứng) of many. And so it is with an examination of a list of the All-Time Bowl Players, part of an outstanding new book published by the Football Bowl Association.

The irony (sự mỉa mai, châm biếm) is that the more we do and get, the more we want, which leads us to do quite some bizarre (kì quái) things we wouldn’t usually do. It’s a slippery slope (dốc trượt), because on the other side a young person will be criticised and castrated (bị thiến, cắt xén) for not doing anything and will be pressured to do something, anything, the bigger and more complex, the better.

“Some people would say it’s not as big, but for us at Atlantic we take it as seriously as ever. It’s everything for us. Streaming is really important but today you get the Radio 1 and Capital playlists and everybody will be waiting for that news at 5pm. It’s been like that for over 30 years. The whole record industry comes to a standstill (ngừng lại; đi đến chỗ bế tắc). I can be a bit old school at times, but the artists still love airplay because you can hear it, you can feel it, so I still get a massive buzz out of hearing our records on the radio. It’s a drug, it’s addictive, the more you get, the more you want. Don’t tell my wife or my kids, but first thing every morning I open my eyes and the airplay is there. It’s the first thing I look at, even on holiday. I’m such a sad bastard (con hoang, kẻ tàn nhẫn).”

"Catch some Z’s" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Kinga Cichewicz on Unsplash

"Catch some Z’s" -> nghĩa là đi ngủ. Trong hoạt hình hoặc truyện tranh, chữ Z tượng trưng cho việc ngáy khi ngủ.

Ví dụ
If you're in the market for a new spot to catch some Zs, you'll want to check out this weekend's Memorial Day mattress (đệm, nệm) sales.

Most dogs will sleep during the day while their families are at work and school, so having us around constantly (liên tục) during lockdown means many dogs aren't getting the rest they need. A quiet spot where they won't be disturbed by video conferences or children will help your dog catch some Zs.

For short-term sleep problems, your healthcare provider may suggest a drug or supplement to help you catch some Zs. If your doctor prescribes (kê đơn) sleep drugs, it may only increase your sleep by about 20 to 30 minutes.
