"Swear to" nghĩa là thề rằng, nói dứt khoát rằng cái gì là sự thật. "Swear to God" là thề với Chúa, có Chúa chứng giám điều đó là sự thật.

Ví dụ
“I swear to God, blood, we just got robbed by the police!" said artist Brandon Ehieze in an Instagram video capturing the incident.

We are not soldiers who take an oath to die for Ghana. We nurses do not swear to die for Ghana. We must therefore be given PPEs to protect ourselves as we work to save lives, and not die in the process!

"Fucking Rugrat, that wig-wearing (đội tóc giả) faggot (đồng dâm nam). I can't believe that fucking guy. I want to kill him," and Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) to then respond, "Swear to God, I want to choke him to death. Irresponsible little prick."

“Himanshi, I really love you. Will you marry me? I swear to God, I want to marry you.” This definitely had left Himanshi in a state of shock but she didn't refuse him and had said, “You are a nice boy but there are many other things right now. I am not refusing but we have to see many things after going outside. I hope you understand. I will only say that I am here for you and this is enough.”

NASCAR plans to welcome a small number of fans at a race Sunday near Miami and more later this month in Alabama. The decision had Confederate flag loyalists howling in protest (phản đối) and vowing to swear off the sport.

It is our in-house handicappers (thợ thủ công) day off so our editor steps in with the Free Horse Racing Picks this Monday. He's dealt with two bad days at Woodbine in a row which has caused him to swear off the track for a while but a good day at Golden Gate Fields kept his gander up.

Doughnuts. I don’t know about you, but I can’t live without them. Thank goodness bakeries and doughnut shops are considered "essential" businesses because I’m not sure I would have made it through the past three months. Every time I try to swear off doughnuts, I find myself reaching for one at a bakery or doughnut shop that just happens to be "on the way."

Many celebrities have also dished on the acne treatments (trị mụn) they swear by for clearer skin - and a lot of the time, the products are surprisingly affordable. Check out the products that celebs like Lili Reinhart and Madelaine Petsch turn to the most, ahead.

The entire Indian political spectrum—the Left, Congress, BSP, BJP, and newer players like Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan and Jignesh Mevani—swear by Ambedkar’s ideals, and talk about his contributions (đóng góp) on his birth and death anniversary. However, we rarely celebrate the day when his all-important undelivered speech Annihilation of Caste was published.

'Blocking and tackling' = chặn/cản và giành (bóng) -> kĩ năng, nhiệm vụ, vai trò cơ bản, cần thiết.

Ví dụ
Initially, the founders of Collab started with a studio program designed to work with emerging (mới nổi) entrepreneurial talent in the Atlanta area that may not have had access to mentors providing the same kind of advice on the basic blocking and tackling of starting a business.

And while A-B InBev’s portfolio might have transformed over the last eight years, its in-market blocking and tackling strategies (chiến lược) are mostly the same: dominate wholesaler mindshare (chiếm vị trí quan trọng trong tâm trí người tiêu dùng), control shelf space, maintain on-premise draft handles and focus on selling priority brands at scale.

Blocking and tackling weren't allowed while school was out and still is not permitted, which means that coaches will have to spend a significant amount of time at the beginning of fall practice to reacquaint (làm quen lại) their players with technique and to also get them the necessary repetitions (nhắc lại) to be ready for the season.

"Catch a snooze" nghĩa là gì?

'Catch a snooze' = ngủ giấc ngắn, chợp mắt.

Ví dụ
CNN's Richard Roth has the story on sleepy politicians who can't help but catch a snooze during speeches and conferences.

The lockdown (phong tỏa) was also an excuse for amateur DJ’s to play their music at top volume, ostensibly to entertain the neighbourhood – let’s hope there weren’t any health workers trying to catch a snooze before heading back out to a shift at the hospital!

The concept sedan was a showcase for technology that may soon find its way into cars, including a supersized digital display stretching across the length of the dash, and level 4 self-driving ability which is one step short of being able to catch a snooze in the back seat while the car drives you home.

The doors to this brand new building will be open and the felines (thuộc giống mèo) here will be able to meet their fur-ever families. This new facility was designed to feel at home, so the only cats that are in a cage are the ones that need an extra eye kept on them. There are four rooms and in there, the cats and kittens have an endless play pin where cats can run, jump and even catch a snooze.

"Swear blind" nghĩa là gì?

"Swear blind" nghĩa là nói dứt khoát, thề độc bởi vô cùng tin vào điều đó, đến mức mù quáng.

Ví dụ
'Control' in fact, is one of those releases (bản phát hành) where you’d swear blind that actual magic can be found within the code.

They are not allowed to present themselves this way, and the introducers, when approached, swear blind that they never said this “specifically”. But you know how this works as well as I do.

However, there is nothing phenomenal (phi thường) about an amateur trying to hang wallpaper. In my experience it is a messy, tricky, awkward job and every time I start it I swear blind I’ll never do it again.

They’ve been meeting with workmates in the uncanny environs (môi trường kỳ lạ) of RDR2 for some time now, and while they can’t swear blind that it’s the most efficient place to do business, it is at least not Zoom.

"Swear like a sailor" nghĩa là chửi tục, chửi thề (như lính hải quân).

Ví dụ
Are you kids bouncing off the walls? Are you fighting needlessly with your spouse? For most American families (and families around the world) the answer to these questions is an obvious “yes.” But are your kids also swearing like sailors?

For $60, the Cuss Collar, which fastens (buộc chặt) around a dog's neck, will spit out a swear word every time your dog barks. It's currently sold out, but those who are in desperate need to have their dog swearing like a sailor can sign up for details on its next drop by texting the number listed on the website.

They all act older, but they’re still just young, vulnerable kids. Kelly feels bad for trying to make all the outfield plays others could make, then is bummed when they ignore him post-game. Amanda is all tough, but really just wants to be part of a family, even if that’s with Buttermaker as her father figure. Tanner wants to fight everyone and swear like a sailor, but just wants to play ball and have friends.

Over the course of the years, certain movies end up in permanent ruts (đường mòn). Studios swear up and down they are in the works, yet they keep getting delayed year after year with no promise of completion.

Dr. Ish soon came back with the test results, which were positive (dương tính) for cocaine, even though she said she hadn't used in three months. June broke out into tears, swearing up and down that she wasn't using, as her daughter comforted her. The doctor told her it could be a false positive if she'd taken Sudafed recently, and June offered to take a blood test.

Trump’s birthday comes amid nationwide protests and outcry as part of the Black Lives Matter movement, following the tragic death of George Floyd. Just weeks ago he was mocked mercilessly (chế giễu không thương tiếc) as “Bunker Boy” after swearing up and down that he didn’t actually hide in a safe room beneath the White House on May 29 as protesters rallied for Black Lives Matter.

Also, the governor has the option to request that the state attorney (luật sư) general prosecute (truy tố) violations.

Delaney Robinson, a 19-year-old sophomore from Apex, went to an Orange County magistrate to swear out warrants on charges of misdemeanor (khinh tội) sexual battery (bạo hành tình dục) and misdemeanor assault (hành hung) on a female against Allen Artis, a 21-year-old junior from Marietta, Ga., who is a linebacker (hậu vệ) on the UNC football team.

The next morning, armed with a photo of the man they suspected of causing their injury, Gorcenski filed a police report with the UVa police department. After they gave the officer their statement, he suggested that they go before a magistrate and swear out an arrest warrant against the suspect (nghi phạm) — identified as Christopher Cantwell, a man who has risen to prominence (nổi bật) in the white nationalist movement through his podcast, “Radical Agenda.”

"Swear someone to secrecy" nghĩa là bắt ai hứa giữ bí mật.

Ví dụ

A decision of someone not wanting to come home might be personal, sometimes.I am told that before they go that they have taken a lot of money from their sponsors (nhà tài trợ), who swear them to secrecy.

However, Situ is aware that someone had touched her with a metal rod and given her something to smell. She insists on knowing who it is and Sahai refuses to tell her. However, she gets hysterical (kích động) and Sahai is worried that she will have a relapse (tái phát) and tells her it was Billy Biswas and swears her to secrecy.

To mention the fledgling enterprise (doanh nghiệp non trẻ) in the presence of a white master was a ticket to torture (tra tấn) and likely death by hanging, so everyone took precautions to swear new recruits to secrecy. With a few months, more than 60,000 enslaved people had heard about the effort, through well-wired plantation (đồn điền) networks.

"Swear like a trooper" nghĩa là gì?

"Swear like a trooper" nghĩa là nói tục chửi thề, mở mồm ra là chửi rủa, chửi rủa luôn mồm.

Ví dụ
“Jim was so charismatic – he’d be your enemy and your friend in a matter of 60 seconds, and he’d swear like a trooper,” Powell told the Coaches’ Voice. “A young Steve McClaren did a lot of the coaching, but Jim would be out there every day.

Many drivers get a bit potty-mouthed (mồm loe) when they are on the road but one motorist claims it's her sat nav that swears at her like a trooper. Tracy Dockerill says her sat nav is getting revenge for her shouting at it - by repeatedly branding her a 'motherf****r' when it gives directions.

Forget swearing like a trooper, the real phrase should be swearing like a Spaniard. Everyone in Spain, from sweet little kids to frail (yếu đuối) old ladies, peppers their everyday conversation with enough swearwords to make a sailor blush. So beware, the longer you live in Spain, the more normal you'll think it is to drop rude words into everyday conversation.

"Lost in the mists of time" nghĩa là gì?

"Lost in the mists of time" = lạc giữa thời đại -> nghĩa là bị lãng quên hoặc bị thất lạc vì đã diễn ra/tồn tại từ rất lâu.

Ví dụ
A more recent customer has been Dan Evans, the Hall Green star currently ranked No 28 in the world of men's singles. And, lost in the mists of time, is an incredible moment detailed below when The Beatles played next door just when the Fab Four were on the cusp (đỉnh) of greatness.

Well, surprise surprise, after I dug a little deeper, a word popped up that most of us would like to consider lost in the mists of time. Yep, you’ve guessed it– Brexit! It appears that while both Mr Cummings and Mr Johnson, both leading Brexiteers, were incapacitated with the coronavirus, a number of diehard (kẻ hết sức ngoan cố; kẻ cực kỳ phản động; người kháng cự đến cùng) remainers decided to use this uncertain period to devise a way to obtain a two-year extension of the transition period- due to be decided next month.

It feels as though the places we call home have been here forever. But nothing lasts indefinitely and dotted across the Yorkshire landscape – or beneath the North Sea – are towns and villages lost in the mists of time. In many cases, it was nature that snuffed out (chết, tiêu tan) their existence. For others, it was economics or grand designs that led to their demise (sự để lại, di tặng). Or it was a mixture of all three. Here are just 14 of these places which have disappeared, some leaving landmarks, others reduced to legends and footnotes in administrative records.

"Show a good time" nghĩa là gì?

"Show (someone) a good time" = cho ai có thời khắc tuyệt vời -> nghĩa là vui chơi, giải trí, tiêu khiển với ai; (tiếng lóng) khơi gợi, mơn trớn dục tình.

Ví dụ
Last week there was a lot of talk about Mike being under investigation (cuộc điều tra) with Greater Manchester Police. It has now been revealed he has been accused of (bị cáo buộc) telling a 17-year-old girl that he can “show her a good time” while in his police uniform.

I was over him when he got ghost. Then forgave him when he came back with the clutch block party plug. Since his debut in season 3, something about Nathan’s character has seemed sweet and genuine (chân thật). He smiles at Issa when he talks to her. He looks her in her eye. And when she needs something—whether it be to handle a rude passenger in the back of her party Lyft or to show her a good time on a ferris wheel—he’s there.

A man was sitting in a truck at the TA Travel Center and called 911 Sunday afternoon after 31-year-old Jessica Lee Nobles of Madison, Wis. approached him, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He told her to “keep on walking” and she then offered to show him a “good time.” When that didn’t work, Nobles asked him if he was interested in having sex with the child who was with her, the report said. He again told her no and then called 911.

"Screen time" nghĩa là gì?

"Screen time" -> nghĩa là thời gian người ta dành trên màn hình khi xem TV, nói chuyện và liên lạc với nhau qua các thiết bị điện tử hoặc các diễn viên thì đóng phim ảnh/diễn các show.

Ví dụ
Too much screen time isn’t going to make you go blind, though it can lead to eye fatigue (mỏi mắt) and headaches. But those excessive hours online can have a negative effect on family life.

Adults’ screen time can also be scheduled. Time spent watching TikTok videos or constantly streaming old TV shows can usually be used in more productive and fulfilling ways. Yes, physical exercise and outdoor time should be on the schedule, but art projects, reading, gardening or starting a new hobby can also deserve time blocks.

If every family member constantly has their faces buried in their favorite electronic time killers, there is usually less time for family sharing and interaction (sự tương tác). You may notice your kids aren’t sleeping as usual, they seem to get little or no exercise and have trouble showing up at set mealtimes. Look a little closer and you may find that your own screen time is also encroaching (xâm phạm, xâm lấn) on what should be other, normal activities for you.

“I'm happy that this time we landed right on time so our music can be the soundtrack to progress – and that's what it feels like,” Killer Mike said.

Team ‘Kone Bou’ has been shooting since June 11. Soumitrisha, who is playing Koli in the show, was excited to face the camera once again. Taking care of precautionary (đề phòng) measures, Soumitrisha reached the shooting set right on time on the first day of shoot.

The summit will feature some of the most dynamic culturally and socially impactful entrepreneurs (người khởi nghiệp, doanh nghiệp có tác động mạnh mẽ/có sức ảnh hưởng lớn trong xã hội) of our generation. The keynote speakers are artist, entrepreneur, philanthropist (nhà bác ái, nhân đức) and actor Master P, Romeo Miller, Shaun Ross, Ray J, Willie Norwood, LisaRaye McCoy, Omarosa, DJ Dimepiece, and 30+ additional world-renowned individuals from various industries. The speakers will be providing the keys to closing the racial wealth gap and creating generational wealth. In light of the recent racial pandemic (đại dịch có tính chủng tộc), this summit (hội nghị cấp cao) comes right on time to support the black community in understanding the importance of wealth building.

"Once upon a time" nghĩa là gì?

"Once upon a time" -> nghĩa là ngày xửa ngày xưa.

Ví dụ
Once upon a time a potentate (kẻ thống trị, vua chuyên quyền). Beherhaal, this is not about storybooks. This is the truth of today. This is the story of your making. You finished one.

Players don’t really have the capacity to surprise you anymore. Once upon a time, they would reveal themselves in stages, over seasons and years. A youngster would take his first steps in senior football, with his shirt hanging off him and his shorts below his knees and give little or no indication of what he might eventually become.

Except that this is not about once upon a time. This is about now. Time is cyclical (tuần hoàn, có chu kỳ). It has come back from once upon a time. And to the ruler. Remember how they used to be in those stories? “Ek atyachari raja thha... There was once a tyrant (bạo chúa, kẻ bạo ngược) king.” That would set the story up just right. Now! Let’s see what this tyrant king got up to and what happened to him in the end.

"There's no time like the present" nghĩa là gì?

"There's no time like the present" -> nghĩa là hiện tại chính là thời điểm thích hợp nhất để làm việc/hoàn thành công việc hoặc thực hiện càng sớm càng tốt.

Ví dụ
"There's no time like the present," says Ellen. "We know people who have gotten sick, we know people who have died and we know we're together." If there was a couple that embodied the phrase "go with the flow," (trôi theo dòng nước nghĩa là dễ dàng chấp nhận hoàn cảnh, theo xu hướng chung) it's Ellen and Alan. "It would be people like us who do something like this," says Ellen.

For those of us who are trying to broaden our worldviews (mở rộng thế giới quan), giving the reins to Black and POC filmmakers is a great way to do that. Movies have a unique ability to get under the skin and stick there, thanks to powerful imagery, impactful storytelling, and transformative performances. And if you don't already seek out films by Black creators, there's no time like the present moment. In a time when many of us are looking for ways to combat racism (đấu tranh chống biệt chủng tộc) in our society, diversifying our entertainment diet is one small, but meaningful step. Some of these are free to rent on Amazon, others available on Netflix or Hulu, and the rest are well worth a couple bucks to rent.

"Anecdotally (chuyện vặt) there's more attention being paid to women's sports," she said. "Government commitments obviously have been quite strong over the last while. There are lots of initiatives happening in sports all across the country. People are reviewing their policies, we are seeing improvements at least at the national level of more women on the boards. So there are things happening. They might just not be translating yet into these large statistical analyses (phân tích thống kê)," she said. She hopes the Rally Report's takeaway for people already working on achieving gender equity (bình đẳng giới tính) is to keep going. And for those who haven't started paying attention, "there's no time like the present."

"Mark time" nghĩa là gì?

"Mark time" = (quân sự) giậm chân tại chỗ theo nhịp -> nghĩa là chỉ đợi thời gian trôi mà không làm gì cả; không làm việc gì có giá trị chỉ ngồi đợi để xem hoàn cảnh diễn ra như thế nào.

Ví dụ
Camus writes that in a plague (bệnh dịch) there's 'nothing to do but mark time' but marking time is harder than it sounds. Is it Monday or Tuesday?

In this period of suspended living, which we have already been in for over the 50 days of counting, I wish that I could say that the end is nearing ... but I can’t. For now, this is our reality- that we will continue to find ways to mark time and choose to engage in community – virtually.

“Mathematics (toán học) is weak. Lessons in key stage 2 do not follow a sensible sequence and many pupils (học sinh) lack confidence in the subject. Work for the most able pupils is too easy and they mark time. On the other hand, pupils who do not understand something do not get the right guidance and teaching, so fall further behind,” the report said.

My own practice gun is a Ruger Gunsite Scout, and many's the time that I take it to the range with cheap ammo (đạn dược) and shoot the hell out of it.

It’s not to say people didn’t find the work as emotionally draining as the actors – many’s the time that audience members asked if they were receiving emotional counselling – but that they didn’t exactly separate the character from the actor.

Many’s the time that a last-minute replacement for an indisposed conductor (người chỉ huy, điều hành miễn cưỡng/không thích) resulted in a revelatory Cleveland Orchestra experience. Saturday night at the Blossom Music Center was one of those occasions. The very popular Bramwell Tovey, sidelined by illness, was replaced by Gemma New, a New Zealand native. New is music director of the Hamilton Philharmonic in Ontario, and is resident conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. She’s not exactly well known in the greater U.S., but if her work Saturday is any indication, she’s a conductor whose renown is sure to grow.

"We have dinner together six nights a week," Underwood revealed to PEOPLE. "I feel like that's something really important. What my husband and I talk about more than anything is how to make sure our children have a 'normal' childhood. That's hard with this particular life."
