"Namby-pamby" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Daniel Mingook Kim on Unsplash

"Namby-pamby" -> nghĩa là thiếu năng lượng, sức mạnh hoặc can cảm, yếu đuối/nhu nhược trong hành vi hoặc biểu hiện.

Ví dụ
The ex-soldier and star of Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins opened fire on mollycoddled (nuông chiều quá) kids and said they need to be ready for life in the real world. He moaned (than vãn): “We can’t live in a namby-pamby world and have everything wrapped in cotton wool. We can’t.

In other words, we will strive (cố gắng) to avoid legal jargon and namby-pamby language that attempts to camouflage (ngụy trang) our views or to avoid controversy (tranh cãi).

Since we sit in the heart and soul of the African American community, we are able to talk about things and be real and quit all this namby-pamby political crap. You know, we're trying to get down the facts, so we can solve some problems.

"Black Russian" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Anastasia Zhenina from Pexels

"Black Russian" là loại đồ uống mix đơn giản giữa vodka và rượu mùi cà phê, thường uống có đá.

Ví dụ
You've heard of the White Russian. Heavy with Kahlúa, guzzled (uống ừng ực) by Dudes, decadently sweet. The Black Russian is basically that, but less frivolous (phù phiếm).

One cake in particular is the top seller. Owner Amelia Stephens took a recipe from Southern Living magazine and tweaked (điều chỉnh) it to make the Black Russian Cake.

Despite the name the only thing Russian about this white Russian recipe is the vodka. Yes, while the origins are not clear, this take on the Black Russian features vodka and coffee liqueur. Just add cream or milk and you have yourself a white Russian.

Traditionally, White Russians are made with Kahlúa, Vodka and a splash of cream and served in an Old Fashioned Glass. Contrary to the name, the White Russian (or Black Russian - a White Russian minus the cream) did not originate in Russia. They were simply given the name due to the vodka.

"You can't polish a turd" nghĩa là gì?

"You can't polish a turd" = không thể đánh bóng cục phân -> nghĩa là không thể khiến những việc vặt vãnh trở nên hấp dẫn hơn, cố gắng vô ích mà thôi.

Ví dụ
“People said it couldn't be done, you can't polish a turd”, the President said. “But I've built a career on polishing turds. Coronavirus?

You can’t polish a turd, but you can do your darndest (do your best, làm hết sức) to make sure all your ducks are in a row, photographically speaking. To prove that you can make anything look good, I'm shooting an old potato.

The adage that you can't polish a turd holds true here, but a polished turd still looks a good deal better than one that's seen better days.

"Roman holiday" nghĩa là gì?

Đấu trường La Mã. Photo by ugur uğur from Pexels

"Roman holiday" nghĩa là một sự kiện/hoạt động giải trí mua vui dựa trên sự đau khổ, bóc lột của người khác. Cụm từ được lấy cảm hứng từ bài thơ Childe Harold's Pilgrimage của Lord Byron, bài thơ đề cập đến đấu trường mà các đấu sĩ phải chiến đấu đến chết chỉ để giải trí cho khán giả.

Ví dụ
In 'The City of God' Augustine was much too canny (khôn ngoan) to commit himself on the point of whether the sack of the city, after the Goths' Roman holiday, meant the end of the Empire.

What a picture of cruelty (tàn ác) we see in the Roman age, with its amphitheatres (đài vòng), its gladiators (đấu sĩ), its horrors on a Roman holiday, and its slave quarters! No hospitals for the sick, no asylums for the poor and needy .

Well is it for the sitting Member if party exigencies (khẩn cấp) or family ties enable him to secure a "leader"; then will he be as popular as ever was a General with animals unknown before, or slaves from new races, gracing his Roman holiday!

Rome was now a Christian city, but some of the old sins (tội lỗi) remained. The gladiatorial (đấu sĩ) games continued to make a Roman holiday for the people. Christians were no longer thrown to the lions, but those captured in war had to fight and kill each other.

"Roman hands and Russian fingers" là cách chơi chữ của cụm từ "roaming hands and rushing fingers", nghĩa là xu hướng tình dục (ở nam) thích sờ soạng trong vô thức, bàn tay hư hỏng.

Ví dụ
It's not uncommon problem for boys, probably a genetic defect (khiếm khuyết di truyền) passed on from generation to generation. My friends call it 'Roman hands and Russian fingers'. You're not alone in this, Alan, a lot of guys have this problem-you can't control your hands.

You heard the expression Roman hands and Russian fingers? Well. That was him. And in those days they didn't have laws against sexual harassment (quấy rối tính dục). A girl had to put up with some of that to keep her job. And if she couldn't handle her boss, it was her fault.

The show has been heavily praised for its writing, acting and design, and has taken home 15 Emmys. But its influence goes beyond just the entertainment world, as evidenced (bằng chứng) by the fact that even people who didn’t watch it still make references to it, whether discussing high fashion, workplace frustrations, or male co-workers with Roman hands and Russian fingers.

"What's that mean, 'Roman hands and Russian fingers'?" Emily asked.
"When young fellas begin taking a serious interest in girls, they sometimes touch a girl in ways they shouldn't. In my day we called that 'being forward'. Now I think it's called 'being fast' or something. Either way, nice girls put a stop to it immediately and stay away from boys like that."

Alan Shepherd, the first person to go, peed in his pants on the launchpad in 1961, but luckily was "totally dry by the time we launched," he later said. The Apollo astronauts had to use roll-on cuffs to pee, and plastic bags for everything else. Sometimes waste escaped, and floated around.

After the Apollo missions ended in 1975, engineers described defecation (ỉa) and urination (đái) as the "bothersome aspects of space travel."

China has militarised (quân sự hóa) several island chains (chuỗi hòn đảo) and shoals (bãi cát ngầm) in the region under Xi Jinping’s nine-dash line (đường chín đoạn) policy. Under the plan, China lays claims to several territories within the line although it runs from the mainland to within a few hundred kilometres of countries such as the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. Although the historical claims to the islands and territories has long been mentioned within China, current President Xi Jinping is attributed with changing the passivity of the policy.

"Bass-ackwards" -> nghĩa là hoàn toàn đối lập với những cách thông thường/thường lệ, rắc rối/khó hiểu.

Ví dụ
It’s really a beautiful irony (mỉa mai), and exactly the kind of completely bass ackwards poppycock we’ve come to expect from 45. Good thing he’s a goner come Nov. I just hope the D also take the Senate so they can reverse Trump’s most egregious (quá xá) BS (bullshit - chuyện vớ vẩn) asap.

"The glass of fashion and the mould of form" = tấm gương của thời trang và hình mẫu của hình thức -> nghĩa là người được ngưỡng mộ.

Ví dụ
Roughly speaking, and adopting some of Kenneth Tynan's analytic (Phân tích) adjectives, Olivier was earthy, animal and extrovert, Gielgud airy, spiritual and introvert; peasant and poet, burgundy and claret (rượu vang đỏ), masculine and feminine. Both were indeed the glass of fashion and the mould of form, the observed of all observers.

Barry Egan's account of the career of Ronan O'Gara (Sunday Independent, February 2, 2014) was heartwarming, reassuring (làm yên lòng) and at times touching, even tender, embodying all of the ingredients for happiness and fulfilment: glittering success in his sport; a beautiful wife and lovely family; excellent prospects for the future; the observed of all observers, the glass of fashion and the mould of form, to paraphrase Shakespeare.

"The world is your oyster" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Floriane Vita on Unsplash

The world is (someone's) oyster = thế giới là con hàu của bạn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là (ai đó) có nhiều cơ hội tốt, điều tươi đẹp ngay trước mắt.

Ví dụ
The beauty of the concept is that the world is your oyster, so long as you have decent Wi-Fi access. But, not all cities are the same when it comes to affordable accommodation, co-working spaces, safety and more.

"Chance, as you think about life after high school, remember that the world is your oyster! Continue to laugh, as laughter is the best medicine for the soul! Don't forget to continue on with your love for hockey, as it was a huge part of your journey! Congratulations Son on your 2020 Graduation! Mom and Dad are so very proud of you! We love you!"

If you like either Thief or Dishonored, you’ll want to play this thing, because it’s basically a combination of those two franchises with bits of survival horror thrown into the mix. Sneak through poorly-lit corridors (yes, there’s a light gem!), stab people in the neck with a sword disguised (giả dạng) as a walking cane, or throw bottles to create distractions – the world is your oyster. There are also multiple pathways to take, hidden switches and secret tunnels to find, and plenty of opportunities for stealth, making the Thief fan in me squeal with joy. On the standard difficulty level, saving is also limited to designated save points, but hey, at least you don’t need ink ribbons, right?

"As a general rule" nghĩa là trong phần lớn các trường hợp; theo lệ thường.

Ví dụ
“As a general rule, a campaign should be aware that, in most cases, the more closely a song is tied to the ‘image’ or message of the campaign, the more likely it is that the recording artist or songwriter of the song could object to the song’s usage by the campaign,” ASCAP says.

There is no “recommended” reliance rate for everyone, But, as a general rule, the higher your reliance rate, the more sensitive your portfolio may be to fluctuations in investment prices. What can you do, then, to either lower this rate or, at least, moderate the risk level attached to it?

To protect their privacy, individuals in all levels of management have to be extremely cautious before opening emails or alerts that appear to come from health experts, government agencies or businesses. And as we now know, consumers should be equally cautious (thận trọng) when responding to videoconferencing meeting invitations. "Armchair general" nghĩa là một người tuyên bố ngạo mạn về điều mình không chắc chắn hoặc thiếu hiểu biết.

Ví dụ
He was a world traveler who rarely left home, yet he plotted a course through history for Britain. George III, who reigned (trị vì) from 1760 to 1820, was a pathbreaking monarch and an armchair general whose thirst for knowledge led him to collect more than 55,000 maps, charts, prints and manuals to savor in his private library.

Perhaps you wish to bark your orders like an armchair general, rather than fiddle around with the rather clumsy army command controls? If so, then the Screamerlord mod lets you yell your commands to each squad with the use of a microphone. It works really well in general, though it does struggle if you have quite a quiet voice.

“I think this is the same mistake President [Barack] Obama made in Iraq when we withdrew the troops that actually created a vacuum and created ISIS and the caliphate,” Palazzo said. "And we had to go back and spend more blood and treasury to kind of defeat this enemy. And I’m hoping, not trying to be an armchair general, but I’m hoping this isn’t going to create another vacuum, that there’s generals in a room and that they have a plan. "

You won’t keep your opinions to yourself. If there’s something on your mind, talk to someone about it so they can guide you toward a solution.

There are certain hierarchies in sets, says Neeraj. You have to be obedient and should be ready to keep your opinions to yourself. “The reality is that talent and hard work is not what matters the most in movies.”

"A difference of opinion" nghĩa là sự bất đồng về ý kiến.

Ví dụ
On Thursday that same court issued a ruling forbidding the Defendant from taking the issue to the Eleventh Circuit on an interlocutory appeal. The Court found the issue of whether ringless voicemails were subject to the TCPA to be so clear cut that there is no “substantial” grounds for a difference of opinion on the subject.

Resolving them, Israeli and American officials say, requires resolving a difference of opinion between two close confidants (bạn tâm tình) of the president: Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, and David M. Friedman, the United States ambassador to Israel, who was Mr. Trump’s longtime bankruptcy lawyer.

We are expending more effort to generate hate than we take to understand an opposing opinion, the history and basis of the any historical responses. I once wrote that I long for the time when I could have a difference of opinion with someone, talk about our varying views and still be able to have a drink or share a meal after recognizing, respecting and learning from that different view.

WWE RAW had a lot of high points this week, but I have to say that I wasn't entirely thrilled by some of the stuff that happened during the show for sure. Juneteenth stems from June 19, 1865, when Union troops under Gen. Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas. Granger’s men marched through the city reading General Order No. 3 at municipal buildings and churches, declaring that all slaves were now free. African American leaders held the first celebration to mark the day on June 19, 1866. Trump’s assertion that he made the day famous is a matter of opinion, but we can fact-check his claim that "nobody had ever heard of it."

Ví dụ

I'm not usually one for mushy (ủy mị, sướt mướt) feelings, but in my humble opinion, Father's Day is a perfect opportunity to tell your dad you love him (I love you Dad) and be thankful for the affection and guidance your parents have given you.

"Six degrees of separation" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Perry Grone on Unsplash

The American film star is so prolific (phong phú), the idea goes, that every working actor is always just six degrees of separation—or fewer!—away from Bacon.

These are our neighbors, these are people we’ve gone to school with, people that we hang out with, and it's not even six degrees of separation. We’re next door neighbors (hàng xóm) when it comes to this stuff.

It’s common knowledge that ‘internet personalities’ all know each other. The perfect portrayal (miêu tả) of that was when YouTubers, Zak and Jay, recently attempted to test the six degrees of separation theory.

Q: "Homicide Hunter” has been a hit domestically and abroad. Did you ever imagine the show being so successful?
A: Absolutely not. I am living proof that even a blind pig finds an acorn every once in a while.

Using an old, time worn analogy (phép loại suy): Even a blind hog finds an acorn once in a while. So, my question is: Why is it that a politician can never find anything good about the opposing party? Is there some rule that condemns (lên án) you for life if you do so?

It’s not as if the government can’t do anything right. After all, even a blind pig can find an acorn once in a while, as my father used to say.
