Đừng "xuôi theo dòng nước"

đừng chỉ theo ý sếp, cần biết phản biện, bảo lưu quan điểm...
-----

-----
...35 miles away, the Onagawa nuclear power plant was to be built.

Similarly, it was built on a hard rock base next to the sea.

But the main difference between the two companies was a man named Yanosuke Harai.

He was Vice President of Tohuku Electric, he remembered a shrine (đền thần đạo) he visited as a child, dedicated to the people killed in a massive tsunami 1,000 years before.

So, because Harai was Vice President, he was able to insist that the site be moved inland to another site of solid rock 50 feet above sea level.

He also insisted a sea-wall be built 50 feet high, even though everyone insisted 30 feet was more than adequate.

And, because he knew that before a tsunami all the sea water recedes, he had emergency systems built to make sure there was always enough water for the cooling system.

Everyone thought it was a ridiculous concern, what a waste of money.

No one could understand his obsession with tsunami’s, any sane person would concentrate on earthquakes.

But, against all objections, Harai insisted and Onagawa was built to be tsunami-proof.

He blamed “the Japanese mind-set of obedience and reluctance to question authority.”

It’s good to register that.

Photo by Erik Mclean from Pexels

"Bow the knee" = quỳ gối -> nghĩa là thể hiện sự đồng tình, chiều ý. "Bow the knee before someone" nghĩa là chịu phục tùng ai, chịu khuất phục trước người nào.

Ví dụ
I’m not coming to no bow the knee to have you blow smoke up my ass. It shouldn’t have took the murder of George Lloyd to bring you to the table and decide that racism is enough.

Freedom of speech and freedom of expression must be protected “by people who do not bow the knee” and understand history and the classic literature produced by Western civilisation (nền văn minh).

"We're in solidarity (đoàn kết) with you and what's happening in America… and we will bow the knee," the boy's father said before he knelt (quỳ xuống) at the front of the press conference with family and legal representatives (đại diện pháp lý).

If you've been following my articles and broadcasts, you know I take strong exception to the BLM movement because of its radical social agenda, and I refuse to bow my knee to mobocracy (quần chúng thống trị). At the same time, I absolutely want to show my solidarity to my black friends in times of pain and frustration, and I want to be an ally to combat racism wherever we find it.

I saw all the sights - sunrise at Tongariki, sunset at Ahu Tavai, went round the offshore (ngoài khơi) Motus (the famous Bird Islands) in the world’s smallest boat and I didn’t stop smiling the whole time. And the first time I saw the view from the lip of the crater (miệng núi lửa) of Rano Kau, I literally fell to my knees in awe (kinh sợ). Easter Island is unforgettable.

The professor of linguistics (ngôn ngữ học) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology continued that Republicans had disappeared as a party and remained silent during some of Trump’s actions, like firing inspectors (thanh tra) general in place to monitor corruption (tham nhũng). “It’s worse than the old Communist Party. The leader gives an order; we (fall) on our knees,” Chomsky said.

Like Marshmello’s February 2019 virtual concert, or Travis Scott’s more recent April 2020 in-game concert event, it has become a whole *thing.* And if you are knee-deep in the world of Fortnite because you play or your kid is obsessed (ám ảnh), then you’re going to need to know everything about this show.

Attorney General Barr has stated in press conferences and media appearances that he is investigating (điều tra) foreign instigation (xúi bầy) of violence and domestic terrorism (khủng bố). His department is also knee deep in its investigation into attempts by the Obama administration to discredit (mất uy tín), delegitimize (mất tư cách) and ultimately debilitate a duly-elected (bầu chọn hợp lệ) president.

He'd purchased ball tickets since he was knee high to a duck's ass. He even knew a couple of five-year-olds that played the numbers. All that stuff was a lot of bull. College was bull too.

I have known the name and celebration of Juneteenth since I was knee-high to a duck. We gathered with family and friends to celebrate the honor and dignity (nhân phẩm) of life and liberty. And we celebrated our desire — and that of our ancestors — for the pursuit of happiness.

When there was no firm (bền vững) job offer, Martin rang him back later and told the Fianna Fáil leader he could "do a good job in education''. Within three years, at the age of 36, he was Minister for Education. Referring to this later, he said, "A dumb priest never got a parish.''

I haggle (mặc cả) about everything and 90pc of the time, I get something off. I came from a poor background and my granny always said: "A dumb priest never got a parish."

-----
Do you work with symbols, things, or people? The answer determines how you were affected by the virus crisis.

If your value comes from working with symbols (words, computer code), then you are more likely now to work from home. Otherwise, your work was not heavily disrupted.

If your value comes from working with things, then if those things were “essential” you kept working. In fact, work to deliver things actually increased. If you made things that were not so essential, you may have experienced a short-term layoff.

If your value comes from working with people, then you have had to shut down or operate in a greatly altered environment. Think of a restaurant server, a hair stylist, a teacher, or the proprietor of a small shop.

The virus crisis is going to exacerbate (làm trầm trọng) some of the class differences that Joel Kotkin talks about. The class least adversely affected includes those who were already separating themselves as an upper crust. The class most adversely affected includes those who already were suffering declines in status and relative economic strength.

"At/above sea level" nghĩa là bằng/trên mực nước biển.

Ví dụ
According to Bryant, that has a lot to do with the elevation (độ cao) of his orchard; most of the peach trees sit between 1,300 and 1,400 feet above sea level.

Flightradar24 data showed two helicopters monitoring his June 19th march from Brooklyn Museum to Borough Hall, one flying at 500 feet and another as low as 375 feet above sea level.

Administration might also suggest stopping new developments below 250 metres above sea level, continuing with the existing flood plan, leaving the communities untouched or redeveloping them with new anti-flood regulations (quy định chống lũ).

The trough (vùng lõm) at mean sea level runs from northwest Rajasthan to northwest Bay of Bengal across northeast Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh, northern parts of Chhattisgarh, southern parts of Jharkhand and northern parts of Odisha and extends upto 1.5 km above mean sea level, the IMD said.

"Level a charge against" nghĩa là gì?

Cảnh sát cũng có thể là tội phạm. Photo by Erik Mclean from Pexels

"Level a charge against (one)" nghĩa là buộc tội ai.

Ví dụ
The settlements with federal prosecutors (công tố viên) could be announced as soon as Friday and include a penalty of about $3 billion, according to a separate report from Dow Jones. Whether government lawyers plan to level criminal charges against individuals connected to the bank was unclear.

Minnesota Attorney General (viên chưởng lý) Keith Ellison will increase the charge against a fired Minneapolis police officer to second-degree murder in the death of an unarmed black man and level charges against the three other fired officers in a case that has led to more than a week of sometimes violent protests across the United States.

Though multiple survivors have alleged (cáo buộc) that Maxwell participated in Epstein’s alleged crimes, she’s never been criminally charged (buộc tội hình sự). One thing that could stymie (cản trở) potential efforts to level charges against Maxwell is the infamous 2008 plea (bào chữa) deal that Epstein struck with the US Attorney for Miami, Alexander Acosta, which found him serving just 13 months in prison after initially facing charges that could have garnered him a life sentence (án chung thân).

She's probably the only woman living who'd be prepared to sink to your level. I know you fancied her all the time.

Don't sink to his level. Why not? Why should you have to behave well while he is behaving badly? Because you have to keep your faith in yourself alive. The more you act like him, the more you will dislike yourself; it will make you weaker, not stronger. Taking on his behaviors gives him more power over you, not less.

"Significance level" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by bongkarn thanyakij from Pexels

"Significance level" hoặc "level of significance" nghĩa là mức ý nghĩa thống kê, thường được thể hiện dưới dạng giá trị p (p-value).

Ví dụ
Two years plus interim (tạm thời) periods were required at significance levels between 40% and 50%, with one year and interim periods required at significance levels over 20%.

Sample size (quy mô mẫu) for these trials would depend on the choice of noninferiority (không thấp kém hơn) margin, significance level, power, and the underlying variability in the trial (thử nghiệm) end point.

Reasonable expectations are that the statistical significance of phase II will be confirmed in phase III and that trials that record a significance level under the threshold (ngưỡng cửa) in phase II will be suspended (tạm ngưng).

Perhaps counterintuitively (trái ngược), the lower the statistical (thống kê) power, the lower the probability that an observed effect which reaches an arbitrary statistical significance level (such as p < 0.05) actually reflects a true effect, making the discovery of false positives more likely.

"Lower myself to some level" nghĩa là gì?

"Bạn không cần phải hạ thấp mình trước bất kỳ ai." Photo by Polina Zimmerman from Pexels

"Lower (oneself) to (some level)" nghĩa là hạ thấp bản thân, khom lưng cúi mình trước hành vi vô đạo đức, không ra gì.

Ví dụ
You should not lower yourself to the level of being sacrificial fodder (thức ăn gia súc) because you are too high a value.

Instead of presuming to raise them up to me like some pedant (nhà thông thái rởm), I lower myself to their level so as to put myself within their reach. What's more, I feel better for it.

'I won't lower myself to her level again,' she said resolutely. 'She has lost a child,' Carmel said gently. 'Time will ease the pain for both of you although you won't think it now. I'm glad you've come to this decision.'

Oh come on, Jesus Christ, I've never been so horny as to lower myself to do something like that. I had no regard for her at all. She might as well have been a hooker (gái điếm). What makes matters worse, I know her history.

"Go level with" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ketut Subiyanto from Pexels

"(Go) level with (one)" hoặc "be on the level" đều có nghĩa là trao đổi thẳng thắn, trung thực với ai.

Ví dụ
One other thing, you think I'm doing this for you. Think again. I'm gonna level with you. Do me the favor to listen.

Look, Tom... I'm gonna level with you. We've never seen eye to eye, you and me. I think your methods are questionable.

“I'm gonna level with you,” José said, settling behind his desk.
"I appreciate that," I said, on full alert. Whenever people tell you they're going to level with you, expect a lie.

He sighed. 'I'm gonna level with you. Suppose you were to come and live here. You got white friends, right?' I nodded. 'Okay. Pretty soon, they're gonna start visiting here regular. Maybe some of 'em'll get to like the area; why not? What then?'
