"What's your beef with" nghĩa là gì?

Hãy nói ra điều thầm kín. Photo by cottonbro from Pexels

"What's (one's) beef (with)" nghĩa là có vấn đề gì, vấn đề của bạn là gì...

Ví dụ
Not making trouble, I can tell you that! What's your beef with those people?

“What's your problem with her, anyway?” Gabe asks the black man. “She never did anything to you. What's your beef with her?”

John: "What is it?" he asks. "What's your beef with Ted?"
Jerry: "What's my beef with Ted?" Jerry asks, eyebrows raised, voice still low. "The question is, Johnnie, what's your beef?"

A: "What's your beef with law enforcement, anyway?"
B: "I don't have a beef. I just know that law-enforcement agencies are made up of humans. And as such, they're prone to (thiên về) human error. Even when people have good intentions, sometimes things get missed."

"Have a beef with (someone or something)" nghĩa là bất đồng, phàn nàn hoặc tranh chấp với ai/điều gì.

Ví dụ
He acts like someone that has a beef with you and wants to get your dander up (chọc tức).

Whoever they had beef with or problems with, now it’s going to come up and affect them now that they’ve got those executive positions with the Knicks.

We have no beef with having stuff. Scavengers (người bới rác) need not swear off possessions and need not vow to be minimalist antimaterialists (người phản duy vật). Some are. Some are not.

Anyone who has a beef with such things really has a beef with God the creator and is guilty of rejecting His handiwork. Perhaps you have a racist attitude because you had a negative experience with a person of another ethnicity.

"Poetry in motion" nghĩa là gì?

"Poetry in motion" = thơ ca bay bổng -> nghĩa là cái gì rất thanh lịch, uyển chuyển và duyên dáng, nhất là khi khiêu vũ hoặc hoạt động nghê thuật.

Ví dụ
“Watching Lolo play soccer is like poetry in motion,” Lemon Bay coach Katie Cooke said. “She reads the play well and comes up big when we need her too. Lo has a knack (sở trường) for finding the back of the net and she does it in exhilarating (vui vẻ, hồ hởi) fashion. Her passion for the game is second to none and you know it as soon as she steps on to the pitch.”

At its best, NBA basketball can be pure magic, poetry in motion, the salve that soothes (làm dịu) your raw nerves; lord knows that, thanks to the combination of the coronavirus pandemic and the country’s ongoing reckoning with the racial justice movement, police brutality, and pervasive structural inequality, there are plenty of raw nerves across the country these days.

For Delhi, Goel bowled alongside Bedi, their action contrasting each other’s with the former hailed for his economy of movement and accuracy and the latter for his action described as poetry in motion.

"A boon and a bane" = vui vẻ và tai ương -> nghĩa là cái gì vừa có lợi vừa có hại.

Ví dụ
The NBA’s hiatus (gián đoạn) has been both a boon and a bane. For fans it has been a worrying time, going through for months without watching competitive basketball.

The year 2020 has been a boon and a bane for the environment. In the initial (ban đầu) two months of the lockdown, we cheered for all the goodness — pollution levels were at the lowest, waste generated was down by almost 50 per cent, no noise pollution, hidden wildlife made cameo appearances — that made us believe nature was healing.

"Beef to the heel like a Mullingar heifer" nghĩa là gì?

Em hờn vì mọi người nói em mập! Photo by Magda Ehlers from Pexels

"Beef to the heel like a Mullingar heifer" (tiếng lóng) nghĩa là béo, chân bự, mập chân. "Mullingar heifer" là loài bò cái tơ được nhân giống ở Mullingar, thị trấn ở hạt Westmeath, Ireland.

Ví dụ
He's soft as mush, short in the reach, slow as molasses, and beef to the heel like a Mullingar heifer.

'Beef to the heels like the Mullingar heifer' is a saying that often irks (làm khó chịu) the neighbours in Meath, who regard the Royal County as the best land in the world for beefing up any animal.

“Nay, don't talk as if we were looking out for fillies, Top! No, I don't know that I have. And you?” “Nothing. The county's out of the question, and the rest of them are beef to the heels like Mullingar heifers."

As mid-century goes mainstream you are seeing more and more hairpin legs on sofas, sideboards, bedside and tables. The design is elegant and works really well in small spaces because it allows the furniture to seemingly float. It is the anthesis of the chunky (chắc mập), “beef-to-the-heel like a Mullingar heifer” wooden block leg.

"Cry in(to) (one's) beer" nghĩa là buồn phiền, sầu muộn về điều gì.

Then he asks me, “Good surprises or bad surprises?” I got the sense that bad surprises would make me want to cry in a beer, and since I had a deadline to meet, I chose good.

So, if your own vacation plans have been dashed, there’s no need to cry in your beer; our state is richer than any others in foamy beer destinations and our local economy and especially our local breweries (nhà máy bia) and their employees could use your support.

Post the score of the game below, if the Bengals win, we’ll randomly select a winner to receive a $50 Big Ash Gift Card. If the Rams win, everyone gets to cry in their beer during Un-Happy Hour with 50% off on all Big Ash Brand taps for an hour following the game (must be present to win).

“The hotel is close enough to the field that fans and guests can hear the roar from Lambeau on Sunday,” says Michael Buta, Regional Director of Operations for MCR. “Go Pack go!” Afterward, toast the team’s latest victory (or cry into your beer) at one of the city’s buzzy (sôi động) craft breweries.

"Out at elbows" nghĩa là mặc quần áo rách rưới, tồi tàn, nghèo.

Ví dụ
He keeps no staff; only one middleaged man, usually a little out at elbows, who sits in a high Pew in the hall, and is rarely overburdened (làm quá sức) with business.

A farmer has quite as much business in the field, or about his ordinary occupations, with ragged garments (quần áo rách rưới), out at elbows, and a crownless hat, as he has to occupy a leaky, windbroken, and dilapidated (ọp ẹp) house.

This breed was out in full force and was equally as good in quality as was Chicago, where we never saw a better lot of dogs. Tim won in the challenge class, although not in good condition and a trifle (một chút) out at elbows.

For things, as well as people, get out at elbows ; and time wears holes in feeling as well as in velvet and corduroy (nhung kẻ). Love and hope and happiness and aspiration all go threadbare (xác xơ), and fail into rents as the months pass on and winter frosts wither (khô héo) up and blight the last of the summer flowers.

'In the extreme' nghĩa là ở mức độ cao nhất, cực kỳ.

Ví dụ
The presence of a pack of at least six wolves was confirmed late last year in the extreme northwest corner of Colorado. There have been several sightings by wildlife officers, hunters and landowners.

We have to admit that the test drive footage is boring in the extreme. But Japan has some of the harshes (khắt khe) traffic laws in the world, so everybody takes it nice and easy. Thankfully, we can spice things up with track footage.

A government auditor from Western Australia kept information about every police officer in the state on their laptop, which the corruption (tham nhũng) watchdog (người kiểm soát, kiểm tra) has described as “naïve and silly in the extreme”.

Ví dụ

"Go out of his way" nghĩa là rất cố gắng, nỗ lực làm gì.

Ví dụ
Pokimane did go out of her way to acknowledge all the fun she had at the Offline TV home, however. "As amazing of an experience as that was — and I wouldn't trade it for anything — I do feel like it is kind of time for me to try something new," she said.

At full-time (kết thúc trận đấu, hết giờ), Klopp marched onto the pitch and summoned his bemused (sửng sốt, kinh ngạc, điếng người) players (các cầu thủ) towards the Kop end. They sheepishly (bẽn lẽn, e lệ, ngượng ngùng) held hands in a line and took a bow, to all intents and purposes looking as though they were celebrating a draw at home to the team 13th in the Premier League. Social media was ablaze (rực cháy, bốc cháy) that night. But Klopp? He didn’t care. He didn’t go out of his way to explain that the gesture was to thank fans for staying after the Crystal Palace criticism.

When Meghan joined the royal family, the Queen seemed to go out of her way to make sure that she was fully embraced. She broke with her own traditions to invite her to family holidays -- even before her wedding -- and included her mom, Doria Ragland, as well. Meghan, for her part, delved into royal work full steam ahead, with a drive that impressed both Queen and the public. (She did event after event and went on a royal tour while pregnant.)

What struck many people as deceitfulness was often the result of Kissinger's attempts to win approval from opposing groups; during Vietnam, for example, he would attempt to convince dovish Harvard intellectuals that he was still one of them while simultaneously trying to impress Nixon with gutsy hardline advice. Kissinger would go out of his way to curry favor with the American Right after they attacked him over detente (chính sách hòa hoãn)-while at the same time making disparaging comments about Reagan and prominent Reaganites to his intellectual friends. Historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., a longtime friend of Kissinger's, referred to this trait as "his refugee's desire for approval."

Sách "Biến động" - tranh bìa thật đẹp

shared from fb hoai phuong tran,

4. Biến động: Tranh "A Samurai rides to a meeting with Commodore Matthew Perry" của Ishii Shigeo, hoạ sĩ Nhật đầu thế kỉ 20.

If you're somebody who only comes to these events to play a new game, rub elbows with a PR person to make sure they remember you come review code time, and grab a free drink, these events are a lot of fun.

It will require the Chinese tech titan to increasingly rub elbows with some of its international peers, many of which are just as powerful and ambitious. Alibaba is well-equipped for the task, though.

During my three years at ASU, I was very fortunate. I had countless opportunities to cover professional and collegiate sports. From the PGA Tour to MLB spring training and the College Football Playoff, I gained experience reporting at high-profile events. I had the chance to rub elbows with some of the biggest names in professional sports, including Mike Trout, Rickie Fowler and Devin Booker.

"Go down on (one's) knees" nghĩa là quỳ xuống.

Ví dụ
Take a knee is a protest against the unfair treatment of Black Americans - but has now become a globalised symbol of fighting racism. It initially gained worldwide attention in American football, as some players would go down on one knee during the national anthem (quốc ca) at the beginning of the game.

“This is a Black man going down to his knees and putting his arms and his instrument behind his back, saying, ‘Take me, arrest me.’ And in a way, as I was doing it, it felt like surrender (đầu hàng),” he says. “We surrender to the hope that everyone will come together on this issue and try to fix it and try to make things better. We kneel because we have tried so hard that it's hard to stand.”

Nazi Germany (Đức Quốc xã) never was able to position itself for an invasion of Britain (which itself speaks well of the British). So Hitler resorted to nightly bombing raids (đột kích) he thought would bring Great Britain to its knees (as did U.S. Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy). But months later, the British survived the Blitz and the Nazis had to concede that Great Britain was not going to go down on its knees (much less surrender to a monster like Hitler).

I do that because I don't want to become target-conscious on long putts (cú đánh nhẹ). Putting the ball to the fringe (mép) lets me work on speed. It's the last thing I do before going to the tee. (Well, if it's a big tournament (vòng thi đấu) and my knees are shaking, I may make a detour (chệch hướng) to the restroom.)
