"Make demands of" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alex Radelich on Unsplash

"Make demands of/on (something)" hoặc "make demands on (someone or something)" = đưa ra yêu cầu -> nghĩa là gây áp lực lớn hoặc kỳ vọng cao.

Ví dụ
In order to make demands on others, we need to make demands on ourselves first Bringing children up means more than just teaching them the specific techniques of languages, mathematics or drawing.

With squad cars blocking traffic on I-80 in both directions, hundreds armed with signs and spray paint took a seat in the entirely peaceful protest that turned the interstate eerily (kỳ lạ) quiet as person after person grabbed the bullhorn to share stories of racism or make demands of local authorities.

The protest's organizers made demands of law enforcement in Saginaw. Some of the demands include 100 hours of training on mental illness and de-escalation (giảm leo thang) practices, secession from Michigan's "Secure Communities Partnership;" banning SPD's and MSP's use of K-9 units to attack, subdue (khuất phục) or threaten people; demilitarization (phi quân sự hóa) of SPD and MSP ban on ex-military equipment; and reformation of the Saginaw Citizen's Policing Review Board.

At its factory in Kentucky, Wald Sports manufactures baskets, which retailers say are in great demand this year. The company did not immediately get back to BRAIN with questions about how the company is dealing with the increased demand.

In such a scenario, many may opt for a less expensive used car. Experts also believe entry-level (cơ bản) used cars will be in greater demand, with many motorcycle owners looking for an upgrade. However, the price of used cars will depend on the supply side.

Another company that displayed immense strength amid the coronavirus outbreak-led volatility (biến động) is The Clorox Company CLX. It remains strong footed for obvious reasons. Its disinfectant (khử trùng) wipes, sprays, bleach, floor cleaners and other products remained in great demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Ride two horses at the same time" nghĩa là gì?

"Ride two horses at the same time/at once" = một lúc cưỡi hai con ngựa -> nghĩa là cố gắng đồng thời làm hai việc không thể xảy ra hoặc thực hiện được.

Ví dụ
Pointing out that the industry is at the crossroads of ICE, EV and hybrids, he stated that they need to ride two horses at the same time.

Horgan and his government are trying to ride two horses at the same time. They’ve accepted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, they’ve committed to reconciliation (sự hòa giải) with First Nations, they’ve claimed to be committed to protect British Columbia’s priceless environments, all the while, shamelessly infringing (xâm phạm) on Aboriginal rights and title, fracking, damming, and further alienating those with whom they claim to be reconciling.

“At the crossroads, we need either go to hybridisation (sự lai hóa) or electric or start investing to maintain the current product line up. We need to do both ICE and these for some time now. There has to be a decentralised team working on enhancing the value proposition for current products. We should be individually driven by a plant level or business unit level. At the same time, it must have a centralised organisation that is trying to push the interest towards R&D and this can happen only by building competency. We take engineers, build competencies for a particular technology and make vital collaboration around the world and work with them. Earlier, we were selling only parts and now we are selling solutions. We have moved up the value chain and enhanced it. It is entitled (được quyền làm gì) that we need to ride two horses at the same time,” stated, Sundaram.

"Nut-cutting time" nghĩa là gì?

"Nut-cutting time" có nut-cutting là đập quả hạch -> cụm từ này tương tự với "crunch time" nghĩa là thời gian mang tính quyết định, rất quan trọng liên quan đến kết quả của công việc (thời gian nước rút).

Ví dụ
“As far as this baseball thing, I see something happening right now,” Eckersley said from Pleasanton, where he’s been staying for the last month or so as he visits his daughter and her family. “The next day. I think it’s nut-cutting time right now, I really do.

“I don’t think he did, and again, I don’t know what the office saw, I know that I didn’t think he took things seriously enough, because again, he had the world by the balls and could have used it to his advantage and done just about anything he wanted to do, and sometimes when it was nut cutting time, he would choose to laugh at it and not go, and there’s a time to laugh and play haha and there’s also a time to just go.”

As part of that story I had an idea. A theory I wanted to test. You see, I think the modern gravel bike has a fatal flaw, a weakness that nobody is talking about in public. Quite simply, they suck going downhill (xuống dốc). Nobody mentions this in their media campaigns or carefully curated Instagram feeds, but they hurt. On the fireroad behind my house a 38mm tyre does little to dampen (làm mất hứng, nản chí) the sensation that your eyeballs are being methodically shaken from your skull. And, for me, that undoes any of the good things about gravel bikes (and I think there are quite a few). I have Views on bicycles. Strong ones. I believe that when we get down to nut-cutting time, there is no point in any bicycle, whether on asphalt (đường nhựa), gravel (sỏi) or dirt, that isn't fun on the way downhill.

Distractions will have less time to build up first thing in the morning, and if you are pulled away, you have the rest of the day to make up the time.

Mr Webster was among the students who opted out of paid clinical placements and instead continue his academic studies through an online timetable. “I’m comfortable with the decision I made but I of course am a bit anxious about when and if I’m going to make up the time, as I’m sure everybody else is,” he told Nursing Times. “There’s a lot of unknown about when [students] are going to be able to pick up those Nursing and Midwifery Council-required hours.”

“Seventy Bellambi relief workers went on strike for three and a half days over unhealthy job conditions and the ‘speeding-up’ tactics of the Public Works Department; when some minor concessions were made they returned to work. When they were not allowed to make up the time lost, and the ganger was sacked for refusing to speed up the work, all but one worker went on strike again. By this time the morale (tinh thần, chí khí) and determination (sự quyết tâm) of the men was high, and the strikers were well organised and militant. The rank and file job committee was enlarged to include relief, propaganda (sự tuyên truyền) and entertainment committees, and public support was won at mass meetings. Strikers’ representatives spoke at meetings throughout the South Coast area ... after three weeks their demands were granted.”

"Wet the/one's bed" nghĩa là tè dầm.

Ví dụ
In which case, I have a bit of advice for Bell: If you want your daughter to stop wetting the bed, do not put diapers (tã) on her at bedtime. The feel of bulky (cồng kềnh) fabric around the pelvic (xương chậu) area is associated with spontaneous release (tự phát). Diapers and pull-ups at night extend bedwetting indefinitely.

Tara Sabin said her stepson had a hereditary urological condition (bệnh tiết niệu di truyền) that made him wet the bed. When the urine (nước tiểu) was dark, she said she and her husband told Zachary to drink 64 ounces of water per day. Before Zachary’s death, Tara Sabin said her stepson was sipping water and throwing it up, The Gazette in El Paso, Colorado, reported.

What ads are mostly run on the telly today? I would guess how to lose weight, how to cure one’s self by either partaking of prescription (đơn thuốc) or over-the-counter drugs, what cars to buy, automobile repair insurance or ads by ambulance chasers to urge viewers to hire an attorney (luật sư) to represent them if they have ever used a product that allegedly caused them to have cancer or even wet the bed.

But there was no telling whether Miss Chandos would tumble into bed as quickly as we did. I certainly was not surprised to see her sit down and take up a book that lay on the drawers and begin to read.

He still felt something for her. Even if it was only lust. But no way in heck was she going to tumble into bed with him when he thought so little of her. Perhaps she should have insisted on clearing the air immediately when he first recognized her.

A: "What—and you just naturally assume that you're so sexy and I'm so responsive that we'll just tumble into bed together without a thought for the consequences?"
B: "That isn't what I meant."

"Reds under the bed" = Đảng Cộng sản núp gầm giường (từ "reds" tượng trưng cho Đảng Cộng sản).

Remembrance is not about a paranoid (hoang tưởng) hunt for ‘reds under the bed’. I’m not suggesting that the Leader of the Opposition is on the level of General Jaruzelski, Poland’s last Socialist dictator.

In a tense back-and-forth between the two, Mr Watt said he was "absolutely astonished (kinh ngạc) at what I'm hearing". "We are at a point in history where the strategic environment facing our country is extremely fragile (mong manh) and we see today a continuation of this 1950s McCarthyist reds under the bed hysteria (kích động) from members of the government,” Mr Watt said.

We seem to have a government more interested in fanning public hysteria over ‘‘reds under the beds’’, almost a new yellow peril (nguy hiểm), all suddenly requiring the Australian people to stand up against the Chinese hordes (bè lũ). It has taken what is a three-out-of-10 challenge to Australian national interests and values and turned it into a nine-out-of-10 existential threat.

"Make (one's) the bed (up)" nghĩa là dọn dẹp, sắp xếp, chuẩn bị giường ngủ.

Ví dụ

Ví dụ
And now the This Morning hosts are celebrating their 10 year wedding anniversary today (June 26, 2020) - oh how time flies!

Two years later, the Al-Nassr star recalled that moment – describing it as one of the best days of his life. “Wow, how time flies! "Hell of a time" nghĩa là gì?

"Hell of a time" = cái thời gian quái quỷ gì đâu -> câu tiếng lóng này dùng để diễn tả công việc vô cùng khó khăn và không dễ chịu tí nào; hoặc điều rất thú vị và phấn khích.

Ví dụ
My old man was a ballplayer. Long before he met my mother, he bounced around several minor leagues as a good-hit-no-field second baseman, and he had a hell of a time that he believed would never end. That’s why he made absolutely no plans for life after second base, which is how he wound up in the dye house of A. Hollander & Son, a firm that dyed fur pelts.

I’ve spoken in generalizations here about major takeaways from the memoirs (ký sự, hồi ký) of a few dozen students. These points don’t all apply to any particular student, but they were collectively enlightening to me, and I share them to add to our profession’s record of this moment. The last line of Granny’s diary entry for July 27, 1990, the day the coup d'état attempt broke out, comes to mind: “It’s a hell of a time.”

These arguments are no substitute for a proper conversation, but I feel my talent for that is atrophying (teo, hao mòn). All I can lay claim to is a surprising degree of self-control: not to say “you stupid ****”, in capitals, shows I am maturing as a person. But I must say, to appropriate one of the gags from that amusing film Airplane!, I sure picked a hell of a time to cut my intake of drink by 50 per cent.

"Walk and chew gum at the same time" nghĩa là gì?

"Walk and chew gum (at the same time)" = vừa đi vừa nhai kẹo cao su/vừa đi đường vừa kể chuyện -> nghĩa là diễn tả một cách châm biếm khi làm hai hoặc nhiều việc cùng một lúc. Câu này thường dùng mang tính tiêu cực về khả năng không thích hợp (nhiệm vụ, công việc,...).

Ví dụ
“Roosevelt also knew that in a highly dynamic time like his — or the one we’re in now — you have to do a lot more than one thing at a time. I was often criticized, just as President Obama is now, for trying to do too many things at once. Roosevelt understood that in a complex and perilous (hiểm họa) situation, you have to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, and he was masterful in doing a variety of difficult things simultaneously (đồng thời).

Let’s just say that this guy can walk and chew gum at the same time. One thing that he hasn’t often done, however, is to guest star on other actors’ series, but he memorably did it this past season on Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” As Dr. Benjamin Ettenberg, he caused our hearts to be broken when, as a potential (and perfect) love interest for Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), she dumped him to concentrate on her career as a stand-up comic. No, Midge, what are you thinking? Nonetheless, Levi’s Dr. Ettenberg made an enormous impression, and maybe, just maybe, he will return.

To counter this disastrous strategic error (lỗi về chiến lược thảm hại), I offer in place the simple but spot-on wisdom (sự khôn ngoan) of my grandmother: We must learn to walk and chew gum at the same time. The U.S. and its democratic allies must factor in far more seriously the need to eradicate (trừ tiệt) and mitigate (giảm nhẹ) the coronavirus and future pandemics, learn the present geopolitical (thuộc về khoa địa chính trị) lessons of the virus, and at the same time continue to go about reconfiguring (tái cấu hình) our militaries to deal with a world of increasing great power competition.

"Take time off from work" nghĩa là gì?

"Take (some) time off from work" -> nghĩa là nghỉ làm việc để dành thời gian làm việc khác.

Ví dụ
"Everyone agrees that workers need to be able to take time off from work when they are ill or need to care for loved ones," Lukas said. "The question is, how best can we provide that support without destroying true job flexibility (tính linh hoạt) and without taking away employment opportunities from women and low income workers."

Regardless of whether an individual infected with COVID-19 is considered to have a disability, job protections may exist to the extent the infected employee took time off from work. For example, the Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act under the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act provides eligible (đủ tư cách, thích hợp) employees with up to 80 hours paid sick leave for COVID-19 related reasons. Many states and localities have also passed leave laws for those impacted by COVID-19.

Before the pandemic, women did more unpaid work at home, were more likely to take time off from work to care for sick children, and to forego (đi trước) paid work to provide caregiving. Although many companies have implemented parental leave and flexible work arrangements to help, these accommodations generally are perceived to be for women alone. These perceptions fuel the motherhood penalty, reinforcing assumptions that women aren’t as committed to paid work and are distracted by caregiving — biases that limit women’s careers. These perceptions also stigmatize (bêu xấu) these programs for men, so fewer men fully use them.

"Early to bed and early to rise" nghĩa là gì?

Muộn rồi kìa! Photo by Acharaporn Kamornboonyarush from Pexels

"Early to bed and early to rise (makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise)" = ngủ sớm dậy sớm là tốt. Đây là câu nói nổi tiếng của Benjamin Franklin, nghĩa là nếu bạn giữ thói quen đi ngủ sớm và thức dậy sớm thì sẽ có cả sức khỏe, tiền tài và trí tuệ.

Ví dụ
I make no secret of the fact that I am an early-to-bed and early(ish)-to-rise kind of person. On weekdays, I wake up around 6:30 a.m. On weekends, I may go crazy and stay in bed until 8 a.m. This also means as time has evolved, I have given myself a pretty firm 9:30-10 p.m. bedtime. Yes, I am serious.

Early to bed and early to rise can make you a mother. Yes, researchers say women who go to bed earlier and wake up earlier are more likely to become pregnant than ‘night owls.’ Researchers from the University of Warwick in the UK explained that morning people tend to be healthier with fewer illnesses, and as a result they have better chances of getting pregnant.

How often have you heard the phrase ‘Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise’? But most people find it really difficult to get up early. It could be due to disturbed sleep or maybe going to bed early is just not their thing. On the other hand, some people get up early without a problem, rejuvenated (trẻ khỏe) and ready to face the world.

To be self-reliant, the government’s announcement on May 16 virtually banning defence imports — a boost for Make in India — and allowing 74 per cent FDI in JV through the automatic route, are near revolutionary steps, but requiring the defence procurement (sự nhận được, kiếm được) procedure (DPP) to be revised for the nth time.
