"Sold a pup" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Pavel Anoshin on Unsplash

"Sold someone a pup" -> nghĩa là mua phải thứ hoàn toàn vô giá trị, bị lừa đảo, lừa bịp.

Ví dụ
Most pets are for families with kids who are bored (chán nản) in the Lockdown. But be warned, there are many scammers (kẻ lừa đảo) out there and you might get sold a pup.

Consumers are being sold a pup. The cost-benefit analysis purportedly (tự cho là) justifying (bảo chữa) the grid link is a travesty (nhại lại). Aside from the standby plant being omitted from the project cost, its fundamental assumptions are false and important calculations and data on costs and profitability have been withheld from public scrutiny. I for one have raised a Freedom of Information request to obtain the figures.

MIKEL ARTETA is now finding out that life as Arsenal boss is not all it is cracked up to be. Only six months into his first manager’s job, he is already wondering if he has been sold a pup by the Emirates executives.

"Weigh his words" nghĩa là gì?

Nói phải đúng, không thì dựa cột mà nghe. Photo by: Jackson Simmer on Unsplash

"Weigh one's words" có từ weigh là cân nhắc, xem xét cẩn thận -> cụm từ này nghĩa là suy nghĩ, cân nhắc kỹ trước khi nói, phát biểu.

Ví dụ
Weigh your words before mocking (trêu trọc) the overweight (béo phì). Somebody carrying extra pounds may be suffering from a thyroid (tuyến giáp) problem.

Weigh your words before discussing (bàn bạc) something prestigious (uy tín) with someone influential. Financial crunch faced by you is likely to ease soon.

This won't stop just with some controversial (gây tranh cãi) statues and Hamilton should really weigh his words, something he's not used to do.

"With time to spare" nghĩa là gì?

"With time to spare" = còn dư thời gian -> nghĩa là không vượt quá thời gian đã định, sớm hơn so với yêu cầu.
Ví dụ
Special shout out to Jim McKenna, who improves as moderator every meeting. No one believed he could pull off the feat of getting through 40-ish articles in his predicted 120 minutes, but he did so with time to spare. Very impressive.

“The changes our brokers need to implement are subtle and are really around expanding on steps that brokers already do. We’ll continue to support our brokers every step of the way to ensure they understand and can implement any necessary changes easily.” Connective plans to put the finishing touches on its compliance policies and procedures as soon as possible, to ensure the changes are implemented for its broker network with time to spare.

It was well past midnight when I arrived back in the newsroom, to the clicking and clattering of typewriters. The keys did not press down easily, and were in dire need of a little WD40. This could be a little stressful with the editor waiting for your proofread (đọc rà soát) copy. But it didn’t faze (làm bối rối, làm phiền) me. Typing at a deliberate pace with accurate statistics, good notes and great quotes, I always turned in my article with time to spare.

"While an hour away" nghĩa là gì?

"While (a period of time) away (doing something)" có while away là giết thời gian -> cụm từ này nghĩa là làm đại việc gì đó cho vui, để bớt nhàm chán vì đang rảnh.

Ví dụ
Young couples work for years to buy a home of their own, while two hours away in Huizhou, thousands of modern apartments stay empty.

Pretty much all of the imagery either have rose petals, coffee, wine and food, but this one stands out for the iPhone with its stock photo of a woman playing a Ukulele. Honestly, best way to while an hour away in the bath.

There’s a lot to see within a few miles of Staniel Cay—and even more tranquil (yên tĩnh) deserted beaches on which to while a day away—so it’s a little disconcerting to see the masses beating tracks for the island with only one unlikely, rather smelly attraction in mind: a motley gaggle (một bầy ngỗng sặc sỡ) of greedy, amphibious (lưỡng cư) swine (con lợn, vật ghê tởm).

"Times change and we with time" nghĩa là gì?

"Times change and we with time" -> nghĩa là khi thời gian trôi thì con người và mọi hoàn cảnh cũng thay đổi theo (chúng ta thay đổi theo thời gian).

Ví dụ
You may be surprised to realize that self-awareness (tự nhận thức) isn’t a destination, but a journey. Because times change and we with time. That way, we always need to keep up with our emotions, feelings, and expressions.

“Kids under the age of 12 to 14 should play a less contact form of soccer which we should develop for them. Kids between 12 and 18 can play but should not head the ball. I know this is difficult for many people but science evolves. Times change and we with time It is time for us to change some of our ways,” he said.

Your kitchen is arguably an essential space in your house. It’s THE point of social interaction and family tete-a-tete. However, you know what they say; times change, and we with time. Your kitchen also is a natural recipient of this change in needs – A very strong driving force to upgrade your kitchen. But most of us chicken out before taking the plunge (quyết tâm hành động, liều). Either we aren’t sure where to begin or we can’t place the factors that scream for your space rejuvenation (sự làm trẻ lại).

"Up to your ears in debt" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Karolina Grabowska on Pexels

"Up to your ears in debt" -> nghĩa là nợ nần ngập mặt, nợ nần chồng chất.

Ví dụ
If you can afford to buy a million-dollar house you shouldn't need a leg up (hỗ trợ) from the Government, unless you are up to your ears in debt.

Why you should still throw at least some money into savings, even if you're up to your ears in debt. Setting aside some money for savings is essential (quan trọng) for indebted millennials: Focusing solely on debt keeps you in the past, but savings (even small amounts) offer optimism (điều lạc quan) for the future.

In the short-term, spending your loan money on something else apart from your tertiary education may not seem like a big deal. Others have done it, you tell yourself as you make a mental note to take up a part-time job to earn some cash on the side. But then the semesters zip by (vèo qua) and the little you earn, you spend on gas for those long road trips with friends. Before you know it, you’re graduating and up to your ears in debt.

"Have a tin ear" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Agung Pandit Wiguna on Pexels

"Have a tin ear" = có tai bằng thiếc -> nghĩa là không có năng khiếu hoặc hiểu đầy đủ về cái gì, không am hiểu âm nhạc; "đàn gảy tai trâu".

Ví dụ
Trump seems to have “a tin ear” when it comes to military issues, said Peter Feaver, a professor of political science and public policy at Duke University and former adviser (cố vấn) to Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

He ignored covid red flags raised by US intelligence agencies in January. Despite evidence (bằng chứng) from South Korea on the efficacy (hiểu quả) of mass testing (thử nghiệm), it was too late by the time the US ramped its efforts up. All along, he seemed to have a tin ear for scientists.

New Zealand First promised the farmers that we would not have a tin ear, that we knew how critical they were to our economy, that we also believed that they were interested in reform (cải cách) as we are.

After a lengthy trade riff by Trump, with all his favorite lines (“The EU is just like China, only smaller”), Haley asked him about a trip she wanted to take to India to visit the Dalai Lama. The purpose of this trip was unclear, other than getting a photo op with the Dalai Lama, always good for an aspiring pol. But the minefield she strayed into by raising the China trade issue showed a political tin ear: once Trump wondered how China would view Haley’s seeing the Dalai Lama, the trip was essentially dead. This episode confirmed to Pompeo how far out of line Trump had allowed Haley to drift, and why it had to stop.

"Fall on deaf ears" nghĩa là gì?

Không nghe thấy gì hết!!!! Photo by: Seth Doyle on Unsplash

"Fall on deaf ears" = (như) nói vào cái tai điếc -> nghĩa là bị phớt lờ/bơ.

Ví dụ
"Our efforts to get any timeframe on when this package might receive government approval (chấp thuận) appear to fall on deaf ears," he said. "In contrast, key competitor countries, including Canada, the UK and New Zealand, announced student visa packages upwards of two months ago."

“I knew it was the right thing to do and I knew at Zillow it wouldn’t fall on deaf ears,” Piccini said. “I knew that people there would really want it to come to fruition (đâm hoa kết trái).”

Shearer's plan is likely to fall on deaf ears after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed the next transfer window (mùa chuyển nhượng cầu thủ) won't be a busy one at Old Trafford. "I think it’ll be a calm transfer window or a sightly different kind of window"’ Solskjaer said.

Young Americans are having less sex -- and they can't even blame (đổ lỗi) the coronavirus pandemic for this one.

Sexual inactivity increased among young American men between 2000 and 2018, according to researchers from Indiana University and Sweden's Karolinska Institutet who studied survey data from US adults. Postponement of adulthood and the growth of the internet and digital media could be reasons for why.

Researchers analyzed data looking at sexual frequency and number of sexual partners, looking at responses supplied by more than 4,000 men and 5,000 women for each question.

Men who were unemployed, had part-time employment or lower incomes were more likely to be sexually inactive, researchers found, noting that the percentage of sexually inactive 18- to 24 year-old men increased from 18.9% between 2000 and 2002 to 30.9% between 2016 and 2018.

Women aged 25 to 34 were also having less sex,

First dates are always nerve-racking. What if you don't fancy them, or they don't like you? What if you have nothing to talk about and it's really awkward?

Naked speed dating events became a hit before lockdown, and many could now move online, offering people the chance to get to know each other without the distraction of clothes.

The events were held in pubs, with guests changing into robes on arrival before stripping off as they sat down. They would have three minutes with each potential match before moving on, just like in traditional speed dating.

It's the news many single people up and down the country have been waiting for since lockdown began – they will soon be able to have sex with someone they don't live with for the first time since March 23.

Speaking at the No.10 Downing Street press conference today (Wednesday, June 10), Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed a new "bubble system" is to be introduced on Saturday that will allow English people living alone to meet up with members of another household indoors.

Socialising in such a way, including getting frisky between the sheets, had technically been made illegal (phạm luật) in April when new coronavirus legislation was introduced.

"With friends like that, who needs enemies" nghĩa là gì?

Trông cả hai đều khó ở. :D Photo by Caleb Betts on Unsplash

"With friends like that, who needs enemies?" nghĩa là bạn bè mà đối xử với nhau như kẻ thù, bạn bè cái quần què.

Ví dụ
Pakistan says they are our friends and India is our enemy. I agree India is our enemy, but with friends like these, who needs enemies?

Dancehall music is winning this weekend, and the Unruly Boss also sounds off with his “message to the homies” on “Friends Like These.” Popcaan returns with some subtly (khôn khéo) packaged words of wisdom on toxic, negative company and their evil intentions. ‘With friends like these, who needs enemies?’ he asks on the melodic, contemplative (suy tư) track released on June 26 on the Unruly Entertainment label.

The thing is, Kelly and Sue were actually close friends for a large portion of Borneo, working side-by-side as part of the Tagi 4. But when Kelly began having second thoughts about the alliance (liên minh) and backed out of the group, Sue took it as a personal affront (sỉ nhục). Rather than talk it out, Sue cut Kelly off, leading to the infamous “snakes and rats” speech where she told Kelly she wouldn’t give her a drink of water if she was on the ground, dying of thirst. Who needs enemies when you’ve got friends like that?

"My enemy's enemy is my friend" nghĩa là gì?

Không bỗng dưng Trung Quốc trở thành kẻ thủ của nhiều quốc gia. Photo by Aleksandar Pasaric from Pexels

"My enemy's enemy is my friend" hoặc "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" = kẻ thủ của kẻ thù là bạn -> nghĩa là hai phe đối lập có thể làm việc cùng nhau chống lại một kẻ thù chung.

Ví dụ
In politics, there are no permanent enemies, and no permanent friends, only permanent interest, so goes the saying. Your friend today will be your enemy tomorrow and vice versa. An enemy of your enemy is your friend.

I would request other countries of the world to make their own versions of Chinese Mosquito Killer Tennis Racket – it is truly one of the greatest inventions of the century. Upon further inspection (kiểm tra), I found that my bike is thankfully Japanese. Chanakya says an enemy’s enemy is our friend, so I washed it and showered it with love and affection.

India’s neutrality stance (lập trường trung lập) is stupid. Chanakya said, my enemy’s enemy is my friend. America has a problem with China, Japan has a problem with China, Vietnam has a problem with China, Singapore has a problem with China. Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, they all have a problem with China. Why should we not aligning with them? It’s a common sense that we should align with America and we are heading in that direction. We already have strategic partnerships (đối tác chiến lược). We need to deepen them. We must go all out for the alliance (liên minh) with America, Australia and Japan. This should be the basic alliance and Vietnam must be a part of it.
