“Birds in their little nests agree” nghĩa là gì?

“Birds in their little nests agree” = chim trong tổ (nhỏ) nên đồng ý với nhau -> nghĩa là những người cùng chung sống nên thuận hòa; thuận vợ thuận chồng tát biển Đông cũng cạn.

Ví dụ
"'Birds in their little nests agree,'" sang Beth, the peace-maker, with such a funny face that both sharp voices softened to a laugh, and the "pecking" ended for that time. "Really, girls, you are both to be blamed," said Meg, beginning to lecture in her elder-sisterly fashion. "You are old enough to leave off boyish (trẻ con, như trẻ con) tricks, and to behave better, Josephine. It didn't matter so much when you were a little girl; but now you are so tall, and turn up your hair, you should remember that you are a young lady."

The website also cited a time when Garner "hooked up" with Vartan before her separation (ly thân) from Scott Foley in 2003. She was allegedly cheating on Foley on set. In addition, Garner has reportedly been leaning on Vartan during the most trying years of her marriage with Affleck. Meanwhile, Foley spoke out regarding the issue at the time and confirmed that their split was not the result of a third party, but it was because of Garner's fame. He said their separation was nobody's fault, People relays. After Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's divorce, they continue to be like “birds in their little nests agree” for the sake of their three children. The two also announced in a joint statement that they will commit to co-parenting their kids.

“Bird in bosom” nghĩa là gì?

“Bird in (one’s) bosom” = chú chim trong lòng -> nghĩa là lời tuyên thệ về việc giữ mãi niềm tin, sự quy phục, lòng trung thành hoặc lương tri trong tâm trí mình.

Ví dụ
I will love you forever, babe! I keep the bird in my bosom till my last breath.

Compare the evidence (bằng chứng) from Icelandic with (among a host of others) St. Lawrence’s turn me over, I am well done, while he is being tortured on a gridiron (bồn chồn như ngồi trên đống lửa), and Ralph Percy’s words (at least such is the tradition) addressed to Henry VI at the battle of Hadgeley Moor (1462): “I have saved the bird in my bosom.” He may have meant that his oath of loyalty and the wound will stay forever in his breast. This is all “literature,” rhetoric (tu từ học) based on classical models. We have no idea what people really said in the throes of death (sự giãy chết).

“A bird's eye shot” nghĩa là gì?

“A bird's eye shot” -> nghĩa là cảnh được quay phim hoặc chụp từ trên cao (cảnh trong mắt chim).

Ví dụ
Bird's eye shot of Victoria Evans Evans will row some 1.5 million strokes from Gran Canaria to Barbados.

Ignore the age-old argument of putting your food in the middle so you don't knock it off and spill it all over the carpet (thảm). The textures and colours of the floor can help accentuate (làm nổi bật) your food, by contrasting with the setting around it. Placing your dish on the edge and capturing a bird's eye shot will add an artistic edge to your image – just remember to put it back in the middle so you avoid a cleaning job later in the day.

One of the best sequences in Wes Anderson’s new stop-motion film, Isle of Dogs, is of a sushi chef preparing a boxed lunch. In a bird’s-eye shot, we see the chef’s hands pin a still-living fish, chop off its head and tail, set it to the side in a shallow bowl (chén nông), and fillet the carcass. A wriggling octopus leg is held deftly, cut into neat rectangles, and pressed onto handfuls of vinegar rice. The chef dots vivid-green wasabi on each slice of octopus, arranging the sushi carefully in a lacquered bento box. This beautifully executed sequence is identical to the process so many sushi shokunin undertake, as they stand behind counters performing for hungry audiences. It is also the only scene in Isle of Dogs that needs to be set in Japan.

“Not hear a dicky bird” nghĩa là gì?

“Not hear a dicky bird” = tiếng chim non cũng không nghe được -> nghĩa là không nghe được cái gì cả.

Ví dụ
Peter, we won't hear a dicky bird from Pavee Point. The only time you hear from that shower is when travellers are been “victimised”.

13th June 7am the owner said “Very sad to report that does indeed appear to be my Land Rover. Thanks very much Wrexhamdotcom and for your vigilance (sự cảnh giác, thận trọng). I just wonder when The Old Bill will match their powers of observation as I have yet to hear a dicky bird from them.”

You have to ask yourself with this large and growing evidence of maladministration (sự cai trị xấu, sự quản lý tồi) by the local authority, why the elected councillors never make any public protest about the management of the Council. Despite the appalling decisions and the way this Council degrades the quality of life we do not hear a dicky bird of protest against the regime (chế độ cai trị) of Jo Negrini, Tony Newman and all the supporting cast in this rotten performance.

"Hit two birds with one stone” nghĩa là gì?

“Hit/kill two birds with one stone” = một lần ném trúng hai con chim -> nghĩa là hoàn thành/giải quyết hai công việc cùng một lúc, một phương án lại giải quyết được hai vấn đề; tiếng việt hay gọi là 'một mũi tên trúng hai con chim', dịch từ tiếng hán 'nhất tiễn song điêu'.

Ví dụ
"We hit two birds with one stone. Since most, if not all, barangays nationwide have a public school, these schools provide viable spots for cell sites that would ensure nationwide internet access,” the chair of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture said.

He got a chance to kill two birds with one stone, as it were, with his episode of the Jazz’s “Quarantine Cookbook” online video series. In the various installments, players partner with team chef Anthony Zamora to bring their favorite meal to the masses. Bradley’s nearly 9 minutes of making a healthy shrimp alfredo saw the usually reticent (kín đáo, dè dặt) and spotlight-avoidant big man get to show off both his cooking skills as well as a newfound comfort and confidence with being the center of attention.

Although I don't necessarily advocate the killing of birds - it is pretty cool when you can "kill two birds with one stone." Two of my favorite activities are playing golf and viewing wildlife It's extra cool whenever these two different paths collide (va nhau, đụng nhau). While playing a round of bad golf recently at the fabulous Devil's Thumb Golf Course in Delta, we came upon a half dozen antelope (loài linh dương) who were lounging in the rough of this particular hole.

“A touch of the sun” nghĩa là gì?

“A touch of the sun” -> nghĩa là bị say nắng nhẹ/bị sốc nhiệt, thường sẽ bị sốt, đau đầu hoặc mê sảng.

Ví dụ
To the Anglo-Saxon reader all this talk was meaningless: we saw a brilliant, compassionate and independent man. If it is not absurd (vô lý, ngớ ngẩn) to say it of a Mediterranean, he had not only a touch of the sun, but a touch of the Protestant. His sane and unyielding sense of the unique value of the individual human being, stands out as the one lasting gain after the ideological battles of the Thirties and Forties in France.

With the Tour riders out of sight, it was time for us to get back on our bikes. The remainder of the Galibier proved to be the steepest part of the climb. We were tremendously over geared with only four racing gears on our rear blocks. The lowest gear was by no means low enough and we were all suffering unknowingly from a touch of the sun, having been exposed to it at the high altitude (độ cao so với mặt biển) for several hours. For my part, if there had been no spectators, I would have dismounted and walked to the top, but there was no lack of encouragement from the crowds and honour meant that I just had to keep going.

From the incredible climate, the stunning beaches and once in a lifetime opportunities El Gouna isn’t a location to be missed. When the winter months set in, and the days get shorter, your mind inevitably drifts towards a touch of the sun. Situated on the eastern coast of Egypt and although located only four and a half hours from the UK; the typical climate of El Gouna couldn’t be more diverse. With never-ending clear, blue skies and continuous hours of hot sunny temperatures, combined with soothing coastal breezes (gió từ bờ biển nhẹ), guarantees El Gouna an admirable vacation at any time of the year. Placid (bình yên, yên lặng) and pleasurable sea temperatures, with low relative humidity (độ ẩm) levels all year round create an ideal holiday whether you want to visit in winter or summer.

“Rain stair-rods” nghĩa là gì?

“Rain stair-rods” -> từ cổ nghĩa là trời mưa nặng hạt, mưa rất to.

Ví dụ
At the handover in Hong Kong in 1997, it began to rain stair rods at the start of the display.

Well, that’s marvellous advice. Thank you, Mary. But I do not live in a giant pile with a huge garden in the land of eternal sunshine. I live in a narrow townhouse (những dãy nhà cùng kiểu, được xây sát vách nhau) in north London and will be spending my summer this year in it, where it will rain stair-rods from the minute my five-year-old, Kitty, and three-year-old, Sam, break up from school, until the minute they return in September.

“The upper layer has washed out in the rain water. Now the muddy layer is left and is dangerous specially when it rains heavily and it gets difficult to see where the road is exactly and where its borders are. There are no sign boards or anything for people to know that the road is in dangerous condition. Also during the last few days when there was no rain, the contractor concerned could have put layer of concrete (bê tông) but he failed to do so. Now the road has become muddy (bùn, lầy lội) and slippery (trơn),” said Hemant Mandrekar.

“Pour with rain” nghĩa là gì?

“Pour with rain” -> nghĩa là mưa như trút nước.

Ví dụ
Unfortunately this bout of good weather will be extremely short lived as it's going to pour with rain the next day on February 2.

Plan for the weather. We live in the UK; we don’t have a climate, we have weather. Even in the summer, it can pour with rain for days on end (mấy ngày liên tục). What are your options? Buying waterproof clothes is one option. Decent waterproof clothes make running in the rain much easier. Be thorough – waterproof socks make running through puddles a possibility knowing that your feet will not get wet.

"There’s going to be disasters (thảm họa, thiên tai); people having to pull out, it’s going to pour with rain, but that’s what we’re going to create. We don’t want it to be easy or boring, I want it to go down in history. The only way you do that is by creating an environment of total madness. My old man said, 'Are you mad, you don’t need extra risk on top of what we got', but I said if we do what everyone else does, that’s boring.

"Hold down the fort" nghĩa là gì?

Mẹ vắng nhà thì chơi với bố!! Photo by: Juliane Liebermann on Unsplash

"Hold down the fort" = cố thủ trong thành -> nghĩa là thay thế ai kiểm soát, chịu trách nhiệm cái gì khi họ vắng mặt.

Ví dụ
The Eagles are going to count on (tin tưởng) a pair of talented juniors to hold down the fort for an offensive line that needs to develop depth.

His amazing wife has been by his side the whole time, while trying to hold down the fort with their six kids, ages 5, 6, 9, 11, 12 and 13. There are three boys and three girls. Kevin is being given incredible care at one of the area's best medical facilities, MD Anderson Cooper at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

Nurkic, 25, is now about 15 months removed from the compound (xương hở) leg fracture (gãy) he suffered during a game against the Brooklyn Nets in the 2018-19 season. He has not played since, and Portland traded for Whiteside last summer to hold down the fort at center in Nurkic’s absence.

"Tighten the reins" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Rosie Blamey on Unsplash

"Tighten the reins" = siết chặt dây cương -> nghĩa là bắt đầu kiểm soát/điều khiển cái gì thận trọng/cẩn trọng hơn.

Ví dụ
If more people throughout the state refuse (từ chối) to wear masks or follow social distancing rules while interacting (tương tác) with others, authorities may tighten the reins on reopening procedures.

By replacing his popular prime minister with a little-known bureaucrat (quan chức nhà nước), French President Emmanuel Macron has signalled that he intends to tighten the reins on government ahead of a bid for reelection in 2022, analysts say.

The novel coronavirus that causes the disease (bệnh) known as COVID-19 is sweeping across the Middle East and reigniting religious tensions (căng thẳng), as governments tighten the reins on long-held practices in the name of fighting the pandemic.

"Hold the reins" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Sheri Hooley on Unsplash

"Hold the reins" = cầm dây cương -> nghĩa là nắm quyền kiểm soát một nhóm/tổ chức hoặc tình hình.

Ví dụ
Less than a year later, the Mizo National Front metamorphosed (biến hóa) from a 25-year-old extremist (cực đoan) group into a political party to hold the reins of Mizoram without contesting any election.

Despite being the single largest party with 20 seats in 42 member ZP, BJP could not manage to hold the reins of the ZP even in its third attempt (cố gắng, thử).

Don’t make “inclusion” your answer, though. That’s in his family’s control, not yours, and 30 years of letting them hold the reins on your feelings is enough.

"Shoot daggers at" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Etty Fidele on Unsplash

"Shoot daggers at one" = bắn dao găm -> nghĩa là nhìn ai với thái độ rất giận giữ, nhìn trừng trừng, hằn học; "mặt như đâm lê" hoặc "ánh mắt viên đạn" đó các bạn.

Ví dụ
One moment sees Amber shoot daggers at Danny - after he appears to have made a controversial (gây tranh cãi) comment - while Molly-Mae opens her mouth in shock.

Not long after that we were invited bowling with a group of work friends and someone joked that we should all wear white jeans. I turn up (xuất hiện) in mine, as does another guy and my girlfriend shoots me daggers all evening.

Then shoot daggers at her whenever she does wear it. Pretend to be nice in front of your friends of course, but make sure to go off on her the minute you're alone.

"At daggers drawn" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Goutham Ganesh Sivanandam on Unsplash

"At daggers drawn" = lăm le rút dao -> nghĩa là hục hặc với nhau, sẵn sàng đánh nhau.

Ví dụ
I think Buhari did not discount the allegations (lý lẽ) against Magu, but he would not bend to the will of the senate under Bukola Saraki which was at daggers drawn with him.

The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, former Minister of Works Senator Dayo Adeyeye and 13 other aggrieved (buồn phiền) leaders have for some time been at daggers drawn with Governor Fayemi over the control of APC.

This is as remarkable (xuất sắc) as it gets. These two parties were always at daggers drawn. They could never really come together across the divide.

One year ago, Edo Kurniawan, a jovial (vui vẻ, vui tính) 33-year-old Indonesian who runs the Asia-Pacific accounting and finance operations (hoạt động kế toán và tài chính) for global payments (thanh toán toàn cầu) group Wirecard AG, called half a dozen colleagues into a Singapore meeting room. He picked up a whiteboard pen and began to teach them how to cook the books (xào nấu sổ sách).

His company would soon become one of Germany’s most valuable financial institutions (tổ chức tài chính giá trị lớn nhất nước đức), but as Mr Kurniawan spoke, the task at hand was to create figures (ngụy tạo số liệu) that would convince (thuyết phục) regulators (nhà điều tiết/quản lý) at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to issue a licence (cấp giấy phép) so Wirecard could dole out (phát chẩn, bố thí, phát nhỏ giọt) prepaid bank cards in the Chinese territory.

The group was seeking to take over payment operations (tiếp quản, chiếm hoạt động thanh toán từ citigroup) from Citigroup, covering 20,000 retailers in 11 countries stretching from India to New Zealand. Regulatory approvals in every territory were crucial, even if it meant inventing numbers to be used in the Hong Kong licence application.

Mr Kurniawan then sketched out a practice known as “round tripping”: a lump of money would leave the bank Wirecard owns in Germany, show its face on the balance sheet of a dormant subsidiary in Hong Kong, depart to sit momentarily in the books of an external “customer”, then travel back to Wirecard in India, where it would look to local auditors like legitimate business revenue.

In isolation, Mr Kurniawan’s scheme might have appeared to be the act of a rogue (thằng đểu, xỏ lá, ba que, lừa đảo) employee in the provincial outpost (tiền đồn) of a little known financial group. But the account of what happened, in a preliminary report on the investigation by one of Asia’s most eminent legal firms, indicated it was part of a pattern of book-padding across Wirecard’s Asian operations over several years. Documents seen by the Financial Times show two senior executives in the Munich head office had at least some awareness of the round-tripping scheme: Thorsten Holten and Stephan von Erffa, respectively the company’s head of treasury and head of accounting.

Sao đãng trí thế không biết?

để quên 3 kg vàng trên tàu hỏa... :D
While many of us have left something on a train - a phone, a wallet, headphones - it's highly unlikely you've wandered onto the platform leaving a bagful of gold behind.

Well, one person in Switzerland has. And the authorities would quite like to find them.

The hoard, worth around £152,000 ($191,000), was found on a train between St Gallen and Lucerne.

The owner has five years to stake their claim (có thời hạn 5 năm để đòi lại) at the prosecutor's office in Lucerne, an official statement said.

Ơ, thế cảnh sát cơ động kỵ binh thì như nào nhỉ?

A traveller says he was left ‘humiliated’ (nhục nhã, bẽ mặt) after KFC refused to serve him at a drive-through while he was riding a horse and cart.

Ian Bell, 55, made it as far as the kiosk window last week only for a manager to come out and say he would have to leave for the health and safety (sức khỏe và an toàn, của khách hàng khác) of other customers.

He says he doesn’t understand, as his horse Jon Jon is as ‘good as gold’, adding: ‘Horse and carts were around long before motor cars.

Thế mới làm lãnh đạo được

ứng cử viên quốc hội brooklyn hồi 19 tuổi từng... đứng xem một cặp đôi làm tình bên cửa sổ, và chổng mông chế nhạo họ :D

Emily Gallagher, who is mounting a primary challenge against Assemblyman Joe Lentol (D-Williamsburg), recounted the strange escapade in a 2003 Livejournal post back when she was a 19-year-old student at Ithaca College in upstate New York.

According to the post, Gallagher was visiting friends in Syracuse when she spotted (phát hiện ra, chợt thấy) a couple doing the dirty (làm điều bậy bạ) through a window and stopped to watch.

When the pair realized they had an audience Gallagher decided to dropped trou.

“Not only did I stare at people who were having sex in front of a window, but I remained even after they noticed me... I waved, smiled, and when the girl flipped out I mooned her," Gallagher wrote. "You’d think i was on drugs... but no!”

The 36-year-old community activist’s other past posts reveal similarly sophomoric behavior.
