"Advance the ball" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Daniel Norin on Unsplash

"Advance the ball" -> nghĩa là đưa bóng về khung thành; tấn công.

Ví dụ
Rodrigo Bentancur has been their best midfield option this season, showing great movement and an ability to advance the ball upfield. He finished this game having made 47 passes with a passing accuracy (độ chính xác) of 94%.

He was eventually tackled (xử trí) and fumbled (dò dẫm) the ball backward before kicker Josh Lambo was able to recover it for a loss of downs instead of giving Houston a chance to advance the ball.

The preference of Vinicius was a tactical (chiến thuật) move. You need someone to break the resistance with pace and dribbling (rê bóng) abilities and none could do this better than Vinicius Junior. In the first half, Real Madrid and Real Sociedad were tested constantly, and both did well enough to advance the ball.

"Ass over teakettle" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Athena Lam on Unsplash

"Ass over teakettle" = mông đít ở trên ấm trà -> nghĩa là lộn ngược, đằng chân lên đằng đầu.

Ví dụ
If there’s wave shelving over a dry reef anywhere on Oahu, this man is on it. Literally on the reef (đá ngầm), we mean. Bouncing on it, rolling over it, ass over teakettle, nearly naked, roped to a board with lots of pointy bits.

Juliana positions (xếp hạng) this bike as XC and trail. I position it from trail to enduro. Size-specific chainstays (xích tải) that are overall shorter than previous versions, coupled with a relaxed 65-degree headtube angle and 27.5-inch wheels, made this bike a playful, agile climber and gave it a solid (chắc chắn), planted feel on technical, ass-over-teakettle-steep downhills.

A glowing purple meteorite (thiên thạch) makes life, uh, difficult and gross for an isolated farm family after it crashes in their yard in the new film Color Out of Space. Because the family's patriarch (gia trưởng) is played by human-TNT hybrid Nicolas Cage and the director is Richard Stanley—who hasn't made a narrative feature since 1996's The Island of Doctor Moreau went so ass-over-teakettle that a whole documentary is devoted to its disaster-ness—you might not expect Color to be an exercise in subtlety.

"Tread on his heels" nghĩa là gì?

"Tread on (one's) heels" -> nghĩa là theo dấu chân ai.

Ví dụ
The Baggies had a strong appeal for a second-half penalty when Youssouf Mulumbu ghosted past Charlie Adam, only for Adam to tread on his heels. Referee Howard Webb looked to assistant Mike Mullarkey, who waved play on.

The excitement and anticipation are palpable as my group of four tread on his heels, lured (nhử mồi) on by what Jane Goodall called the “pant-hoot” call — a kind of bonding ritual (lễ nghi) that allows chimps (tinh tinh) to communicate with each other.

Till recent past, whenever a tourist-gora-couple walked on Srinagar streets, the little children of the mohalla would assemble & tread on their heels all around & sing an old Kashmiri-distich like a chorus with hand-clapping: Memsahib- Sahib Salaam, Pate Pate Ghulam” [Welcome Memsahib- Sahib, your servants follow you] The happy and smiling Memsahib-Sahib would then stop walking for a while, look behind and give some toffees (kẹo bơ cứng) to the singing-children.

"Bless the world with his heels" nghĩa là gì?

"Bless the world with (one's) heels" -> nghĩa là bị treo cổ.

Ví dụ
A few months later there was another change in Iraqi government and he blessed the world with his heels in public.

He was a zealous — perhaps overzealous — justice; once, he commanded the jury to redeliberate after they found a 70-year-old woman not guilty. They reversed their verdict (tuyên án), and she blessed the world with her heels.

"As per the doctor's report, she was strangled first. Prima facie it appears that in order to misguide (đánh lạc hướng) the police, the accused hanged the body from the tree so that it looks like suicide (vụ tự tử). Moreover, the feet of the deceased were touching the ground, which indicates that she blessed the world with her heels later," he added.

"Rules are made to be broken" nghĩa là gì?

"Rules are made to be broken" = luật được làm là để phá bỏ -> cụm từ này dùng để bào chữa/biện minh cho hành vi nổi loạn/chống đối.

Ví dụ
I try not to put the same Late Night host on my list twice in a row (it’s more of an aesthetic (có thẩm mỹ) thing than anything else), but rules are made to be broken, especially when they involve Charlize Theron fondly reminiscing (hồi tưởng, nhớ lại) about nights out with Rihanna.

As a general rule, I don’t think journalists, editors or commentators should call the President by his first name. It cheapens the office. Generally speaking. Certain previous incumbents regardless. In any case, rules are made to be broken (and, this headline needed it).

If you need to break rules, go eat a soggy pickle, or chicken with a fork, or even your friend without his consent. Or you can go to Arizona and spit. You could be charged up to $2,500 with six months in jail, but what the heck, it’s a law and lousy etiquette, but you could spread your possible contagion (ảnh hưởng xấu, dễ lây) there, not here. Whoever said rules are made to be broken and I am sure I have over the years, never watched their uncle on Zoom die alone in a room from a serious virus he caught from a rule breaker. Now do you want to cry uncle?

"Rule the school" nghĩa là gì?

"Rule the school" = cai trị/quản lý ngôi trường -> (lóng) nghĩa là có sức ảnh hưởng/nổi tiếng nhất trong trường học.

Ví dụ
When girls rule the school and why it matters. As first-time college students settle in on campus this fall, males almost certainly will find themselves outnumbered.

You are back at the bottom of the pack sweethearts. You no longer rule the school. You are no longer the 'bosses'. You are the youngest and newest members of your new school's student body. So be careful.

When 7-year-old Wakefield School student William Robinson saw the silent auction items (vật đấu giá) at the recent school gala, one in particular caught his eye - Principal For a Day. The chance to "rule the school" was too good to miss and William begged mum Kate Robinson to win the auction; "He thought it would be a good chance to tell the teachers what to do for a change." Following a bidding war with MP Damien O'Connor, who was also keen to take charge, Robinson won the auction for $75 and an excited William began planning his big day. Meetings with current principal Peter Verstappen took place with some robust discussions about what powers William held. A few ideas were vetoed (phủ quyết, bác bỏ).

"Do the unthinkable" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Aljoscha Laschgari on Unsplash

"Do the unthinkable" -> nghĩa là làm điều không thể ngờ, nhất là phi chính thống (dị) hay cực đoan.

Ví dụ
COULD RAVENS' LAMAR JACKSON DO THE UNTHINKABLE AND WIN NFL RUSHING TITLE (vị trí) AS A QUARTERBACK? Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is also a betting option at William Hill sportsbook to win the NFL rushing title.

How will students receive this “new” kind of learning? How will teachers be able to provide (trang bị) all that is needed with “excellence”? I realize that teachers are “magical” people who are multi-taskers and who can do the unthinkable," but there is a limit.

Victory in the first Test was unexpected, but can this West Indies team do the unthinkable, the unimaginable, and complete a series victory in England for the first time since 1988? The next five days will provide the answer. I'll be tuned in (sẵn sàng xem), will you?

"Wear the green willow" nghĩa là gì?

"Wear the green willow" = vác cây liễu xanh -> nghĩa là đau khổ vì mất người yêu hoặc vì yêu đơn phương (cây liễu thường ẩn dụ nỗi buồn).

Ví dụ
One night you told me you wear the green willow in your life.

Most people wear the green willow, but in reality people can grieve for all sorts of reasons. In essence, knowing what to expect and feeling secure and stable is important for our survival – so when a loss occurs in our lives, our world shifts and is turned upside down.

What does it mean to mourn (khóc thương) the mother you deserved? Exactly what it sounds like—to wear the green willow and support you didn’t get in childhood and adulthood. The mourning process includes all the interactions missed—the laughter and the sharing of experience, the loving touch, the attuned support of a mother who sees you and listens to you—as well as a cool-processed recollection of the interactions that hurt and marginalized (cho ra rìa) you.

"Laugh up your sleeve" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash

"Laugh up one sleeve" -> nghĩa là điều hài hước thầm kín, ý nhị; 'cười che tay áo'.

Ví dụ
Laughter is the best medicine. This means if you're ailing (ốm yếu) in any way, laughter will help you feel better. I believe that. When you laugh up your sleeve, you're discreet (dè dặt, kín đáo). But, unless your shirt is soundproof, you're going to get caught.

Sprenz is a master criminal craftsman, consummate (giỏi) liar, and accomplished actor obsessed with a need to steal cars, beat his wife and laugh up his sleeve at law and order. An ingenious (khéo léo, tài tình) mind gone awry (hỏng, thất bại), a bold band whose derring-do makes him (as) hard to trap as a greased pig.

And when a skillful impostor (kẻ giả mạo) who knows how to make clever use of circumstances comes to them he can manage to get rich in a short time and laugh up his sleeve over these simpletons.

“A hedge between keeps friendship green” nghĩa là gì?

“A hedge between keeps friendship green” = hàng rào ở giữa giữ tình bạn tốt -> nghĩa là tình bạn sẽ luôn tốt đẹp nếu hai người bạn tôn trọng sự riêng tư của nhau.

Ví dụ
“A hedge between keeps friendship green.” — proverb With houses being built cheek by jowl (xương hàm), and remodels going vertical to increase square footage, we get lots of questions about plants for screening and privacy. People are looking for plants that are narrow, fast-growing, evergreen and low-maintenance.

‘A hedge between keeps friendship green’. Pick your partners wisely and get a contract. China is full of opportunity, and it is also full of opportunists. It's not uncommon for western business owners to leave China empty handed after local business partners have exploited their knowledge to unfairly take control of the business.

“A hedge between keeps friendship green” the old British saying goes. If the hedge on your property line produces loads of edible berries, you will enjoy added nutrition (sự nuôi dưỡng, dinh dưỡng) and an opportunity to enhance the relationship with your neighbour with some free food. The idea of growing a hedge is appealing for several reasons. With the right plants and care, you can hide unsightly views, create privacy, or simply demark space in your garden that has a specific use, like a vegetable garden or a path.

"The green apple quickstep" nghĩa là gì?

Lỡ ăn quả hư có bị sao không? Photo by Khamkhor

"The green apple quickstep" = bước nhanh qua vườn táo -> (lóng) nghĩa là bị tiêu chảy, nhất là khi đang đi du lịch.

Ví dụ
An experimental vaccine helps protect monkeys against bacteria that cause the green apple quickstep in millions of children worldwide, researchers report.

In Mexico it's called "Montezuma's Revenge." In America it's called "The Green Apple Quickstep." In Bermuda it's called, "Oh no, I just had my roof painted, the pigeons (chim bồ câu) are back up there already and it's about to rain."

I doubt I need to go into much detail here. Suffice it to say that if you don’t carry toilet paper with you on the water, you are a fool. A damned fool. So what if 90 percent of the time you’ll be bailing out your amigos who’ve forgotten their's and are suddenly doing the green-apple-quickstep with a look of sheer terror in their eyes? Do you really want to fish all day with only one sock?

"From the sublime to the ridiculous is only a step" nghĩa là gì?

"From the sublime to the ridiculous is only a step" -> nghĩa là những điều tốt đẹp/cao quý rất dễ biến thành trò hề/lố bịch (từ sang chảnh đến ngớ ngẩn chỉ với một bước chân); như "gái xinh quẹt tay ăn bánh kem" đó.

Ví dụ
Is there a wine more synonymous (đồng nghĩa) with this time of year than rosé? Probably not, and producers know it, flooding the market each year with everything from the sublime to the ridiculous is only a step.

It is strange how often in life we go from the sublime to the ridiculous. Everything easily swings from one extreme to the other. You may feel that you are already giving it all you've got, but there's just a little more that you can find from somewhere.

“From the sublime to the ridiculous is only a step” is a well-known idiom that came to mind multiple times during our week with the 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 S cabriolet (xe mui trần). Could that step be the difference between the sublime and equally new C43 AMG cabriolet, with its sweet 362-hp twin-turbocharged V-6, and the ridiculously overpowered C63/C63 S cabriolets, endowed as they are with AMG’s hand-built, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 in 469-hp and 503-hp tunes? Or, considering the mass and structural challenges of convertibles, is that step Mercedes-AMG’s decision to risk diluting the street cred of its C63/C63 S coupes, being bad-ass creatures themselves? Regardless of the answer, a C63 S cabriolet is just a step away from two vehicles that could be fairly characterized as sublime, and we couldn’t wait to get our hands on one, drop the top, and determine where it fell.

"Step on the gas" nghĩa là gì?

"Step on the gas" -> nghĩa là nhấn ga tăng tốc độ.

Ví dụ
“I’m looking forward to it,” Noah Korner said. “It’s going to be a big difference. You get in that car and you step on the gas and it’s going to go. With the SK Light you step on the gas and you wait to go. It’s more of a momentum driving car. [The Tour Type Modified] is going to be like driving a Legends car again.”

For many entrepreneurs, we ask them to focus on one simple metric: healthy-unit economics. At any stage of the business and fundraising cycle, buying growth must be understood within the dynamics of healthy-unit economics. If the unit economics make sense, it may make more sense to step on the gas. If the unit economics don’t, it may make sense to be more careful.

As companies across the globe step on the gas to deliver a Covid-19 vaccine, Russia says it has completed trials on its vaccine candidate, according to Russian news agency TASS. “Clinical trials of vaccine against the novel coronavirus were completed on volunteers at Sechenov University, and the results of research proved the medication’s effectiveness,” chief researcher Elena Smolyarchuk is reported to have told TASS. This was tweeted by the Russian Embassy’s office in India.

"Step off the curb" nghĩa là gì?

"Step off the curb" = bước ra khỏi lề đường -> nghĩa là chết (ngụ ý từ lề đường lao vào đầu xe).

Ví dụ
Two men have stepped off the curb after their car crashed into a building in Fife.

“I thought I was going to step off the curb," Houvener said. "I thought that mistake, like me getting up, was going to cost me my life.”

"I was scared he was going to step off the curb and we were like one morning going to wake up and like 'Mr. Gonzalez, sad to hear that your father passed away (mất, qua đời) in the night,' something like that. I was so scared every single night because of that."
