"Your elders and betters" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Malcolm Lightbody on Unsplash

"Your elders and betters" -> nghĩa là những người lớn tuổi và nhiều kinh nghiệm hơn bạn, xứng đáng được tôn trọng.

Ví dụ
It’s in offices, too, that you meet your elders and betters, who can give you tips (lời khuyên).

There’s something intrinsically (bản chất) puerile (khờ dại)—mocking your elders and betters—about parody, and to pull one off successfully requires a blend of craft and cruelty.

But an elderly woman sitting in the adjacent (gần kề) seat attempts to stop her from sitting there, saying: “You have to respect your elders and betters and people who actually paid.”

"Better than a kick in the pants" nghĩa là gì?

"Better than a kick in the pants" = vẫn còn hơn bị đá vào háng/chim -> nghĩa là dù gì vẫn còn có lợi ích, có còn hơn không.

Ví dụ
Sure, banks will now be asked to offer a £500 risk-free overdraft (tiền chi trội), which is better than a kick in the pants – but we know, realistically, that that’s not going to go very far in a time of furloughed (phép nghỉ) employment, job losses and major delays in self-employed workers being able to claim their wages.

Hadley Boyle of Evertree Farm in Tikokino says the mayoral relief (phục hồi) fund (quỹ) is “better than a kick in the pants”.

If all goes well, you'll be able to claim up to 75% of the non-refundable portion (phần chia) of your trip, which is better than a kick in the pants.

"Abandon hope, all ye who enter here" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Emma Frances Logan on Unsplash

"Abandon hope, all ye who enter here" = hãy từ bỏ hi vọng khi vào đây -> câu thông báo về tình huống một đi không trở lại phía trước.

Ví dụ
The theme (nhạc nền) plays over the film’s opening like a bleak (trống trải, lạnh lẽo) warning for what lies ahead: “abandon hope, all ye who enter here”. The manner in which the sparse (thưa thớt), thudding, beat gives way to droning (âm thanh đều đều) synthesiser (nhạc cụ điện tử) serves as an auditory embodiment of the ‘thing’ itself, absorbing the soundscape around the audience.

‘Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here’: The Hell-Gates of Dachau. In a very real sense (ý nghĩa), the apocalypse that was the Holocaust was rung in on March 22, 1933, as Dachau received its first prisoners.

'Abandon hope all ye who enter here' is the supposed inscription at the entrance to Hell. This place is simply signposted (biển chỉ đường) Wilson Parking.

"With gay abandon" nghĩa là gì?

Cứ đánh đi, kệ hàng xóm!! Photo by: KAL VISUALS on Unsplash

"With gay abandon" -> nghĩa là bất cẩn, không suy nghĩ kĩ càng.

Ví dụ
Mr. Gonsalves and others use the term ‘democracy’ with gay abandon. He must know that throughout modern history, democracy is a chameleon term used for a variety of reasons and those of us who ought to know better should be careful not to ply (sử dụng dồn dập) this term without providing detail and credible information.

Remember there are many people in the world who find it a struggle (khó khăn) to get even one meal a day and here we are wasting food with gay abandon. But this pandemic has taught us that we need to utilize (tận dụng) the resources on hand as best we can and wasting is not an alternative.

How can this be when we have the same people who are to implement (thi hành) this plan removing all these trees with gay abandon?

"Not a minute too soon" nghĩa là gì?

'Not a minute too soon' = không hề là một phút quá sớm -> nghĩa là vào giờ phút cuối cùng (có thể được), vừa kịp lúc.

Ví dụ
In any case, we were back at square one (quay lại vạch xuất phát), and the whole world knew it. The only good news was that on December 10, Pat Cipollone started as White House Counsel (cố vấn pháp lý nhà trắng), not a minute too soon.

Mt Ruapehu's dry brown mountain has transformed to a white winter wonderland in the past few days and not a minute too soon as the first of its skifields gets ready to open its doors tomorrow.

On Wednesday, the ranking member of the House Judiciary sent a letter to Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., requesting Dorsey's presence along with other big tech CEOs at an upcoming antitrust hearing July 27. Not a minute too soon.

It is not a minute too soon to turn words and action, ideas into reality and commitments (cam kết) into concrete change (thay đổi cụ thể). And it is only through concerted (đồng lòng, nhất trí), collaborative (hợp tác) international effort, we will succeed in eliminating (xóa bỏ) the horror (sự kinh hoàng) of conflict-related sexual violence (bạo lực tình dục liên quan tới xung đột). And I continue to look forward to working with partners, with United Nations, but, most importantly, survivors, to put them at the heart of our response.

"Talk him off the ledge" nghĩa là gì?

'Talk someone (down) off the ledge' nghĩa là nói cho ai nguôi giận/lo lắng, cơn đau... sau khi họ vừa trải qua tình huống khó khăn.

Ví dụ
Meet Mark Shepard, the Jewish college student who talked Stephen Jackson off the ledge of anti-Semitism.

Talk yourself off the ledge with comforting self-talk after a setback. Self-soothing in the form of pep talks and supportive words (“You can do this”) reduces the stress and helps you hop back in the saddle and try again.

Kelly went on to say, “Paris was a complete disaster,” and that Trump had complained incessantly (phàn nàn không ngớt) on Air Force One flying back to Washington, and even thereafter. He kept rehashing what had gone wrong, along with demanding that Mattis and Nielsen be fired (bị sa thải), largely due to the Mexican border issue (vấn đề biên giới). Kelly said he had gotten Trump “off a number of ledges” but was not at all sure what would come next.

"In a funk" nghĩa là gì?

trump đi paris chẳng vui... Photo courtesy Jeanne Menjoulet.

'In a funk' nghĩa là rất chán nản, tuyệt vọng.

Ví dụ
'Julianne has had a hard time recently and is in a funk. The lockdown (phong tỏa) has brought up all sorts of stuff for her,' a source said.

Trump blamed Kelly, unfairly, marking a possibly decisive moment in ending his White House tenure (nhiệm kỳ). Trump was displeased throughout the trip (“He’s in a royal funk,” as Sanders put it) because of the disappointing election results, and nothing made things better.

I counted myself lucky; I was one of those who’d come through practically unscathed (vô hại, bình an vô sự). At the start of September I’d taken to my bed hurting all over, knowing enough about this brutal flu to be rather in a funk, but I’d found myself back on my feet in a matter of days. Colours appeared a bit silvery to me for a few weeks, as if I were looking through smoked glass. Apart from that, I was only a little lowered in spirits, nothing worth making a fuss about.

"Get the axe" nghĩa là gì?

cho một rìu... Photo by Dan Edwards on Unsplash.

'Get the axe' nghĩa là bị dừng/chấm dứt đột ngột; bị sa thải, bị đuổi học, bị (bạn...) bỏ rơi.

Ví dụ
Taco Bells Ends 7-Layer Burrito, Other Items Get The Axe As Chain Plans New Offerings.

Sixty-five percent of respondents said it was the Hong Kong-Macau consulate that should get the axe, the South China Morning Post reported.

Other bilateral and multilateral treaties (hiệp ước song phương và đa phương) involving Russia and the United States should also come under the ax, not to mention numerous multilateral agreements the US has unwisely (không khôn ngoan, ngu xuẩn, khờ, dại dột; không thận trọng) made.

Luckily, the Civic sedan is still around and available with a manual. Since it comes in hatchback form, you can also get it with quite a bit of space. So while it's always sad to see another car get the axe, the Civic Coupe is one that's easier to accept.

"Turn on the waterworks" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Verne Ho on Unsplash

"Turn on the waterworks" = bật nước -> nghĩa là bắt đầu khóc lóc để được thông cảm/đồng cảm.

Ví dụ
She cried over everything. Granted she did have reason to cry on a few of those occasions (tình huống), but she seemed to turn on the waterworks more than usual.

Sister Wives viewers learned this season that Robyn can turn on the waterworks just as fast as she can turn them off. Is that just Robyn with her natural emotions (cảm xúc) or did her acting days help her master (thuần thục) that skill?

Like my personality, my emotions are black and white and rarely ever in between. It does not take much to turn on the waterworks. I find myself teary when someone I love is upset.
