"Speak softly and carry a big stick" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Geron Dison on Unsplash

"Speak softly and carry a big stick" = nói nhẹ nhàng và cầm cây gậy lớn -> nghĩa là cố gắng đàm phán trong hòa bình và luôn sẵn sàng đối đầu bằng cách phô trương sức mạnh vũ trang.

Ví dụ
When President Theodore Roosevelt first said his now famous line, “Speak softly and carry a big stick,” he envisioned (hình dung) a policy of quiet but real power; power that didn’t need to flaunt (khoe khoang), or antagonize (tạo mối thù), but rather could rest confidently in its ability to release absolute destruction if the need ever arose.

Collier is not known for being an outspoken (thẳng thắn) personality (tính cách), tending to follow the ‘Speak softly and carry a big stick.’ West African proverb she had painted on custom sneakers last season.

This will be our only spoken statement in front of council (hội đồng) tonight. We prefer to speak softly, and carry a big stick. That stick is our current campaign to Defend, Not Defund, culver city Police Department.

"By a whisker" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Chris Kendall on Unsplash

"By a whisker" -> nghĩa là suýt chút nữa thì thắng/thua, trong gang tấc; whisker là ria mép, tóc mai, "xém đường tơ kẽ tóc" đó các bạn.

Ví dụ
Malaysia's Muhyiddin wins vote to replace speaker by a whisker. Muhyiddin's coalition (liên minh) won by two votes in first test of parliamentary majority since manoeuvring (diễn tập) to power in March.

Sukesh Kant, 50, of Lakhimpur Kheri tried to commit suicide (tự tử) by jumping in front of the train but was saved by a whisker. Suffering from acute (gay gắt) depression, he was disappointed and disillusioned (vowx moongj) with life. He had returned from Surat where he worked in a textile mill after it was shut.

He missed the GM norm by a whisker for no fault of his as he was paired in the last round with an opponent below the required 2340+ rating. It’s very unfortunate. He has come this far on several occasions before and the norms (quy tắc) have sadly eluded (trốn tránh) him.

Làm sao để phát triển năng lực quan sát?

muốn quan sát tốt thì phải có lý thuyết nhé :)
-----
trích dẫn hôm nay… is a remark made by Albert Einstein during a 1926 lecture in Berlin; I encountered this astute quotation in this excellent June 24th, 2020, essay at AIER by Barry Brownstein:

Whether you can observe (quan sát) a thing or not depends on the theory (lý thuyết) which you use. It is theory which decides what can be observed.

DBx: And what is true in physics is also true – indeed, more intensely so – in economics and other social sciences which study phenomena (hiện tượng) of vast complexity (vô cùng phức tạp). Those who approach observing – those who count (đếm), measure (đo lường), compare (so sánh) this quantity to that, and track  (theo dõi) quantitative trends (xu hướng định tính) – without first getting their theory straight (hiểu rõ lý thuyết) and sound produce nonsense. This nonsense might well have all the trappings of high science; it might look to the unsuspecting (không nghi ngờ/hồ nghi) eye to be the work of penetrating genius. But unless the data gathering (thu thập) and processing (xử lý) are built upon sound theory (lý thuyết vững, hợp lý, có logic), it’s all rubbish (rác rưởi) – which is why some ways of teaching economics are better than others.

"Send him to the locker room" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Bob Newman on Unsplash

"Send one to the locker room" = rút về phòng thay đồ -> nghĩa là loại ai khỏi vị trí/tình huống cụ thể vì lối chơi/khả năng/hiệu suất kém.

Ví dụ
He and Ojeleye helped fuel an 8-0 run that would put the Celtics up 56-43 with 3:30 to go in the half before the SMU product went down with a knee to the groin (háng) that would send him to the locker room shortly before the break.

It was obvious (rõ ràng) he was not playing at his best, consciously or not. Davis has always let minor, nagging injuries send him to the locker room. But that’s not the point, really.

And before officials could send him to the locker room for an extended intermission (tạm ngừng), Marchand made sure to have some fun with Stars fans surrounding the penalty box. The Bruins winger (cầu thủ chạy biên) was very curious how much money those fans paid to see him play hockey.

"I'm not my brother's keeper" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Ashkan Forouzani on Unsplash

"I'm not my brother's keeper" = tôi không phải người quản lý em tôi -> nghĩa là không chịu trách nhiệm về hành động hoặc nơi ở của người khác.

Ví dụ
“Look, if you want to wear a mask, go ahead. If other people don’t, leave them alone. You are not your brother’s keeper.” So an anti-mask type to me in the comments section yesterday. This is the third time in this debate (cuộc tranh luận) over masks that I’ve been reminded by Trump supporters that I’m not my “brother’s keeper.”

I’m not my brother’s keeper, I’m my brother because what you sincerely (chân thành) want for others will happen to you.

Absolutely. I'm not my brother's keeper, even though he's my twin. And in fact, there might even have been plausible (đáng tin cậy) charges (buộc tội) that the Russians could have come up with. I don't know. You know, maybe he'd been in a traffic accident or something. But I think that the fact that it's espionage (hoạt động gián điệp) is just such balderdash (nhảm nhí). It's just incredibly fictional (hư cấu).

"Not have a penny to bless yourself with" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Haseeb Jamil on Unsplash

"Not have a penny to bless yourself with" (cách nói cũ) nghĩa là rất nghèo, vô cùng nghèo khó.

Ví dụ
You have threescore and eleven quarterings in your coat of arms, it is true, but you have not a penny to bless yourself with.

You are indebted extremely much money, but you don't have a penny to bless yourself with and, what's more, you cannot make out your debts even theoretically.

Too late she recalled how the Press had lovingly interpreted Grant's roared (gầm rú) assurance that without him she wouldn't have a penny to bless herself with.

Though you may not have a penny to bless yourself with, the Lord Jesus will bless you freely. The depths of your misery are not so deep as the depth of God's mercy.

I'll never be able to prove it but I don't suppose he even realized you'd gone. He slept downstairs, remember, and I'll bet a pound to a penny.

I'll bet a pound to a penny the library is somewhere near here. Then she spots it listed on a road sign and walks in that direction. Ha! There you are!

"Count the pennies" nghĩa là gì?

Còn từng này sống sao? Photo by André François McKenzie on Unsplash

"Count the/one's pennies" = đếm từng đồng -> nghĩa là chi tiêu cẩn thận.

Ví dụ
If you ever expect to be wealthy , you must not only learn to count straight, but you must learn to count your pennies.

A frugal (tiết kiệm) person is someone who counts his pennies. Every leader is going to need a lot of money to help him fulfil his vision. How is this money going to come? By being frugal!

You see him? He takes only bread this morning, as if he were French. The storm delays us and adds two days or three days to our journey, so he counts his pennies and worries. He must buy himself a new chemistry book, as well.

Because no one's sympathy (đồng cảm) comes winging towards you , you are someone with no name, a wanderer (kẻ lang thang) without provenance (nơi bắt đầu) and destination , you have to count your pennies and you have no friend to vouch (xác minh) for you.

"Not have a penny/cent to (one's) name" hoặc "without a penny to one's name" nghĩa là nghèo rớt mồng tơi, không có lấy một đồng.

She decided that junior would have to give her five pounds for him not to be locked up. Five pounds in those days was a lot of money. He did not have a penny to his name and he knew without a doubt that he would go to prison.

These are selfless (vị tha) prayers of the selfless person; those that have freely given-up the treasures of this life for those stored in Heaven. Fr. Jacob does not have a penny to his name, nor would he accept one if it were to be used for personal gain.

Thanks to Bessie Mae Brown's southern cooking, I'd developed, around my middle, a little cushion of fat, my 'insurance packet', as I thought of it. You might not have a penny to your name, but as long as you have that little cushion of fat, you're ready to rub elbows (giao tiếp), a civilized man!

"In for a penny, in for a pound" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alex Kotliarskyi on Unsplash

"In for a penny, in for a pound" nghĩa là việc đã làm thì phải làm đến nơi đến chốn, không làm nửa vời. Cụm từ xuất hiện từ thế kỷ 17, ban đầu có nghĩa là nếu một người nợ một xu (penny) thì cũng có thể nợ một bảng Anh (pound).

Ví dụ
I wasn't a terribly active member, but in for a penny, in for a pound, as they say.

In for a penny, in for a pound, we agreed to become the distributor for the sunscreen products too.

Cameron smiled. In for a penny in for a pound, his pragmatic (thực dụng) grandmother who'd raised him used to say. She'd emigrated from Ireland with her husband, who'd died of cancer three months after he'd been sworn in as a U.S. citizen.

Wellington took a calculated risk ordering a general advance; his army was in poor condition to follow up success. Some on his staff urged caution, but the Duke dismissed misgivings with his famous phrase, 'Oh damn it! In for a penny, in for a pound.'

"I felt like a penny waiting for change" nghĩa là gì?

Bất lực. Photo by brut carniollus on Unsplash

"I felt like a penny waiting for change" = cảm thấy tiền có thể bay đi bất cứ lúc nào -> nghĩa là cảm thấy vô dụng hoặc vô giá trị, bất lực.

Ví dụ

James was so hurt by my reaction that they didn't order dinner and left me there alone, feeling like a bad penny waiting for change.

I felt like the proverbial (tục ngữ) penny, waiting for change. My store went broke and I lost it even before it was opened. The best job I could get was driving a taxi cab, or working part time for the post office. There were no jobs. I asked God what do I do?

Most people I've worked with are fine in one setting but others are problematic (khó giải quyết)—certain people, places and situations feel intimidating. My dad used to say, “I felt like a penny waiting for change.” As an example, consider your foot. You've had it a long time and yet even before birth, it was complete.

There is nothing to worry about. Or do you have any questions? Or maybe you're going to look twice at every penny to be spent on her shoes?

Don't do anything so extravagantly (ngông cuồng) foolish as to own a car unless you can put its running and maintenance on the firm's expense account. Live simply, look twice at every penny, spend nothing unnecessarily.

She bore (sinh) eleven children; she buried one of them stillborn (chết non), but the rest of us were raised to be loving and courageous. She would look at every penny twice to make sure it was put to the best use possible.

I guess you'd want me to tell him to stay lonely for the rest of his life. To do what you're doing and turn his back on this new person he'd grown to care about so he could spend the rest of his life lighting candles to your memory.

It is not unusual to find a manic depressive (rối loạn xúc động, hưng trầm cảm) drinking to excess or spending money like it was going out of style. If they don't have money to spend, the manic depressive will use their credit cards, or borrow.

"You're spending money like it's going out of style," I said. "I have a pile of bills on my desk that would choke an accountant."
"What I spend, I need to spend," she claimed. "Isn't it mine to spend, too?"

It would be sadly ironic if visitors with many pounds to spend were dissuaded (khuyên ngăn) from our destinations for want of “spending a penny”.

He was also a skilled inventor (one of his most lasting gifts to humanity is the coin-operated toilet door. When you 'spend a penny', you owe it to Jasper Maskelyne).

Another local saying comes to mind and is frequently used by residents in the area: 'I want to spend a penny.' Years ago, to gain access and use a public toilet, a penny coin was put in the slot in the door to open it.

"Don't spend it all in one place" = đừng tiêu hết đấy nhé -> là câu nói sau khi bạn cho ai một đống tiền.

Finally, Dad steered (lái xe) into the Silver Dollar City parking area and stopped. He gave me fifty dollars - the most I'd ever held at one time - and said with a wink, "Don't spend it all in one place."

It has a bookstore gift certificate in it, and he told me through as sincere a grin as I have ever seen, "Hey man, don't spend it all in one place." I looked at the slip of paper. It was a gift certificate. How could I not spend it all in one place?

“Not to worry,” Leo replied, tucking the paper in his pocket and walking off whistling.
“Well,” said Farmer Ben as he paid the cubs, “you should be proud of the good job you did all summer. Now don't spend it all in one place.”
“We won't,” said Brother. “But we will put it all in one place—the bank!”
