"With a heavy hand" nghĩa là gì?

"With a heavy hand" = với bàn tay nặng nề -> nghĩa là vụng về, nghĩa khác là hống hách hoặc nghiêm khắc, làm mạnh tay.

Ví dụ
The museum won’t mark the floor with guides to keep people spaced, but will post recommended capacity numbers within spaces, “so they can see there are only supposed to be [for instance] five people in here, so if it’s good they can enter,” said Sharpe. “We didn’t want to hold anybody’s hand and say, ‘You have to go that way.’ There will be some self-governance (tự quản) , but we are not going to do it with a heavy hand.”

One can only hope the authorities (chính quyền) clamp down (tăng cường giám sát) with a heavy hand because this is about the future of the most popular sport in the state and also for all those thousands of children who would one day like to play like Mandar or even Maradona.

And he has done so with a heavy hand, frequently clashing (xung đột) with agency scientists and using the power of his position — the only Department of Interior political appointee outside of Washington — to intimidate those who are seen as standing in the way.

"Luckily for you" nghĩa là gì?

May mắn vì đã tìm thấy nhau. Photo by Studio Negarin from Pexels

"Luckily for (one)" hoặc "lucky for (one)" = may mắn cho bạn -> nghĩa là người nói có ý nhấn mạnh sự kiện/câu chuyện được nói đến sau đó hoặc trước đó có lợi cho bạn, giúp bạn thoát khỏi tình huống không may. Cụm từ thường đứng đầu hoặc cuối mệnh đề.

Ví dụ
Only it won't be so lucky for you if this case ever comes to trial.

Luckily for you, your husband is a sound sleeper, and is sleeping through the whole commotion (bạo động). Your parents call, to inform you that, they were on their way, as well as the police. As you hang up the phone, the police is already at your door.

Luckily for you, my kind heart has prevailed (thắng thế) and I'm willing to tell you my plan, but you must give me your word, as a perfect gentle knight, not to embark (lao vào) on any other adventures until you have brought this one to successful completion.

Negro, you must think I'm a fool. You would go crazy if Nokea had been with me or anybody else and you know it. There's no way you would be able to handle what you dished out to her. Luckily for you, Nokea is not capable of bringing that kind of hurt to you.

"It is better to be born lucky than rich" nghĩa là gì?

Bạn thích tiền hay may mắn? Photo by Karolina Grabowska from Pexels

"It is better to be born lucky than rich" nghĩa là thà sinh ra đã may mắn còn hơn giàu có, nhiều tiền không bằng gặp may.

Ví dụ
That's why it's better to be born lucky than rich. If you're rich, you may lose your money. But if you're lucky, you will always get more money!

It is an old saying and a true one, “It is better to be born lucky than rich," and very sincerely did our friend Banana subscribe to that which ages have believed.

Billy: "What do you think of that for a bit of luck, Mary? It's Jimmy Corbally again. You must get dizzy going around in circles, me ould pal." Mary: “You know, Billy,” said Jimmy cheerfully, “it's better to be born lucky than rich.”

It is a common saying, of undoubted authority among the indolent (lười biếng), that “it is better to be born lucky, than rich.” What that same luck is, distinct from Providence, which blesses well - directed endeavours (nỗ lực), it is not easy to say.

"The lunatics have taken over the asylum" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ensiha Digital from Pexels

Clarke could barely conceal (che giấu) his disappointment at losing, nor could his supporters. When the first Duncan Smith shadow ministerial team was declared, a known Clarke supporter commented: 'the lunatics have taken over the asylum'.

In England things just sort of exploded. It was bizarre (kỳ lạ), I remember being with them when "Monkey Gone to Heaven" entered the top ten. It was very surreal moment, the Pixies as a top ten single in England. It really felt like the lunatics have taken over the asylum.

After the economy fell apart in 2008, the Fed just accelerated (thúc đẩy) the policies that it had pursued in the 2000s. It was as if the lunatics had taken over the asylum. The Fed, historically the guardian of the currency, suddenly behaved like the ultimate populist (người theo chủ nghĩa dân túy), printing money like a madman, almost tripling the money supply in only two years (likely another huge mistake for which we will pay with hyperinflation (siêu lạm phát)). Deficits (thâm hụt) didn't matter. Feeding the economy was all that counted.

"Be out to lunch" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Thiago Miranda from Pexels

"Be out to lunch" nghĩa đen là bỏ dở công việc đi ăn trưa, nghĩa bóng là bảo ai điên, kỳ lạ, hoặc hay quên việc này việc kia.

Ví dụ
Yesterday when you were out to lunch the phone rang a couple times.

Here, for instance, is Roth's hero talking on the telephone to the wife of his old friend, who died suddenly at home while she was out to lunch: 'Was it a stroke or was it a heart attack?'

Conversely, she might be so messy that projects pile up on her desk and disappear into a black hole, never to be seen again. She's either in your face at all times or completely out to lunch.

“Maybe,” she thought, “if I send my notes to her, maybe they'll help her—help her to know she is not crazy, insane, a pure nut, a basket case, totally out to lunch... Maybe it'll help her to know that it happened to me too.”

"Launch your lunch" nghĩa là gì?

"Launch (one's) lunch" nghĩa là nôn mửa, cho ra hết.

Ví dụ
He opens his eyes and clears his throat, like he's about to launch his lunch.

Remember, if you feel queasy (buồn nôn), do not launch your lunch into the head as it will clog (tắc nghẽn) and overflow creating a stench (mùi hôi thối) that's hard to even describe.

Zymar stuck a finger down his throat and forced himself to vomit. After regaining his ability to breathe, Zymar turned to Lexington with a big grin on his face. "That damn snack machine won't get me now!" He was very happy about successfully carrying out the order to launch his lunch.

During the Gulf War in 1991 I heard from some usually reliable sources that President George Herbert Walker Bush had been taking the wrong prescription medication (thuốc theo đơn) and that this had made him disoriented (mất phương hướng) as well as delusional (ảo giác) (and had caused him famously to launch his lunch all over Japanese Prime Minister Takeshita, thus sponsoring a slew (lượng lớn) of second-hand "next time, lunch is on me" jokes).

"Let’s do lunch sometime" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Daria Shevtsova from Pexels

"Let’s do lunch (sometime)" hoặc "let’s do the lunch thing" nghĩa là lúc nào đó hãy gặp nhau và đi ăn trưa.

Ví dụ
Let's do lunch. I mean really—let's talk about lunch in ways that we never, ever do.

Canwd you're really wholesome (khỏe). I've always enjoyed randomly bumping into (tình cờ gặp) you on campus! Let's do the lunch date thing again pls.

A: "Please let's do. I 'm sure we'll see each other soon. Let's do lunch sometime. ”
B: “Well lunch is kind of hard for me with my schedule at the hospital, hut we'll get together."

"Let's do lunch. On me.”
I laughed, grabbing for his arm to keep the world from spinning. “It's always on you, Lee. Maybe this one should be on me—as thanks for being a great tugboat (tàu kéo)."

"A fully paid-up member of" nghĩa là gì?

"A fully paid-up member of" -> nghĩa là thành viên chính thức của một nhóm hoặc tổ chức, đã thanh toán đầy đủ lệ phí cần thiết để trở thành thành viên.

Ví dụ
I’m a fully paid up member of the dangerous botanists’ club. Dangerous because a growing fascination (mê hoặc) for plants means that walks and bike rides now take at least three times longer, and involve wriggling (luồn lách) into hedgebacks (hàng rào), dawdling on roadside verges and vaulting fences.

LET me start by cutting the crap and calling out the fibs (chuyện bịa đặt) surrounding Harry and Meghan’s biography Finding Freedom. The author Omid Scobie is a fully paid up member of the Sussex fan club.

Ben Godfrey, impressive despite being a fully paid-up member of Norwich’s leaky defence, looks set for a continental move this summer with Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan both interested.

Yaroslav Suris is suing Pornhub, which hosts millions of adult videos, claiming the site's lack of subtitles violates the rights of deaf and hearing impaired under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The ADA prohibits (ngăn cấm) discrimination (phân biệt đối xử) against people with disabilities (khuyết tật) in areas of "employment (tuyển dụng), transportation (giao thông), public accommodations (nơi trú công cộng), communications (giao tiếp) and access (tiếp cận) to state and local government programs and services," according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Suris argues that the deaf (điếc) and hearing impaired (nặng tai) can't understand the audio portions of the videos on the site, thus denying them similar access to the content,

"Bring it up to code" nghĩa là gì?

"Bring something up to code" -> nghĩa là cải tiến tòa nhà cũ hoặc nâng cấp các tính năng để đạt được quy định/tiêu chuẩn mới.

Ví dụ
“It sounded like to me that it’s going to take pretty much a whole new barn (kho thóc) to bring it up to code … I don’t know what else to do other than to save as much as I can,” she said.

Cloudy (không rõ ràng) titles (lai lịch) prevent (ngăn cản) heirs from borrowing money to improve the property or bring it up to code and they also prevent the heirs from selling. Claiming the property through eminent (xuất sắc) domain (nhà quý tộc) allows the heirs to claim their portion of the purchase by the municipality (tự trị) or buy the property back with clear title.

The county also is working on upgrades to the main Board of Elections building to bring it up to code, including one of the wheelchair ramps in the rear of the structure.

Mẹ tôi sẽ nghĩ gì về điều đó?

shared from fb hung nguyen,

"Have a lock on" nghĩa là gì?

"Have a lock on (someone or something)" = khóa chặt -> nghĩa là hoàn toàn kiểm soát và điều khiển ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Jay Inslee, who is running for a rare third term as governor, seems to have a lock on one of the two spots on the November ballot.

I always looked forward to the mail, in previous years. You could always count on exciting letters inviting you to attend a function, speak at a meeting, and invest in new ventures that would make you a lot of money. I remember when a new venture was a wonder drug like penicillin but I didn’t invest because it came from bread mold and I figured Mrs. Baird would soon have a lock on that.

Both events were reminders that the Midwest can pack an outsized punch. That is most obvious in politics: the stakes are high in a region in political flux (luồng chính trị). Unlike much of the coasts and the south, where voters for one or other party have a lock on outcomes, in this region many switch loyalty. If you want to know whether Mr Trump may win another term, a big part of the answer will be found, come November, in battlegrounds (chiến trường) like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania—three states he unexpectedly won in 2016—and Ohio or Iowa, which he might yet lose.

"Right up my alley" nghĩa là gì?

"Right up one's alley" = ngay hẻm tôi luôn -> thích hợp với khả năng, sở thích hoặc khiếu thẩm mỹ của mình.

Ví dụ
Sharon’s mom had an old cedar chest (tủ bằng gỗ tuyết tùng), one she had since the 1930s, and I overheard her say one day that she’d like to have it refinished (phục hồi). Ah, that was right up my alley. I could do that little task and return it to her better than new.

The president could latch onto (chấp nhận) a higher calling (xu hướng) in education, for example. He could create a made-for-TV series out of events that unfairly cast him as the villain. If the show’s good enough, it could be renewed as a scripted series. Trump, she recalls, has a background in reality TV. This will be right up his alley.

After the opera, and at the age of 65, she began a new career in real estate, and became very successful. She quickly became known in the industry as the 'Condo Queen'. During this time, she also started acting in several Hale Center Theater productions in comedic roles, which was right up her alley. Darleen was a hoot (vui tính), and people loved being around her to be entertained, and to be loved.

"Make buckle and tongue meet" nghĩa là gì?

"Make buckle and tongue meet" = để lưỡi (mồm) và dây lưng (bụng) gặp nhau -> cụm từ này tương tự với "make ends meet" nghĩa là đủ tiền trang trải cho cuộc sống.

Ví dụ
A young boy from East Los Angeles started his own plant business to help his mom make buckle and tongue meet after she lost her job during the pandemic.

With so many families facing financial hardship (khó khăn về tài chính) during this global pandemic (đại dịch toàn cầu), WAVE 3 News is dedicated to helping you find any way you can to make buckle and tongue meet. With families home more than ever before, that means more meals and more money.

It was also revealed that Cheung’s mum Davies Shally has been driving a seven-seater luxury car for almost three years, reported Hong Kong entertainment site Jayne Stars. The site said the 59-year-old took on the job with the ridesharing company to make ends meet. She also previously accepted minor roles in the 2016 horror flick Cases II and worked as a cashier at a bakery in Kowloon.

"The gift of tongues" nghĩa là gì?

"The gift of tongues" = chiếc lưỡi năng khiếu -> nghĩa là khả năng nói được các tiếng ngoại ngữ trong khi chưa bao giờ học, điều kỳ diệu này trong Kinh Thánh được gọi là "Ân tứ nói tiếng lạ".

Ví dụ
Then suddenly my mouth started moving and I was speaking in what seemed like a foreign language. This was deliberate and thought-through, but it was not intentional. I spoke silently so as not to disturb anyone in the house. I had never heard of the gift of tongues.

Perhaps the most revolutionary (bao hàm sự thay đổi hoàn toàn; cách mạng) aspect of the Spirit’s descent wasn’t the gift of tongues, or the number of people added to the church rolls after Peter’s sermon. Perhaps the most revolutionary aspect of the Spirit’s descent is found in how they lived with one another after the crowds left and after the tongues of fire ceased. Once the Spirit came, they lived differently. They lived with an awareness of one another, knowing that each life mattered. An individual need became everybody’s need. Nobody got left behind.

In 1935, Ragoso was appointed as assistant to the superintendent (người trông nom, coi sóc) of the Solomon Islands. The next year, he attended the 43rd General Conference Session in San Francisco, California. While in the United States, he had planned to speak in the Marovo language and be translated by Norman Ferris. At the beginning of the session, however, Ferris fell ill. The General Conference leaders suggested that Ragoso make his best effort to speak in English for his presentations. He was hesitant, but after praying about it, agreed to try. Those who heard him viewed it as “a modern miracle—the bestowing upon this humble faithful servant of Heaven the gift of tongues.”

"The rough edge of (one's) tongue" -> nghĩa là lời nói thô thiển, cay độc và tục tĩu.

Ví dụ
Barnie was a person of deep feeling, yet utterly devoid of sentimentality. And sometimes she could be too tough. If you were a young teacher, and she felt you were failing to communicate a topic to a pupil, you might get the rough edge of her tongue.

“I called him Peter Edward,” Clapton told the crowd, referencing the drummer’s real name. “I think he’s here somewhere and he’ll be playing music for you tonight and we’re going to help him along. He was a scoundrel (tên côn đồ), but I loved him and he loved me and that was that. I saw some people get the rough edge of his tongue, but I never did and I feel blessed. That’s why I’m doing this. I miss him.”

During her early career, Picturegoer magazine described Adrienne Corri as having “no nice little-girl-next-door nonsense about her”. Tales abounded of tantrums (cơn thịnh nộ) during rehearsals, and audiences, too, sometimes got the rough edge of her tongue. As she took her place for the curtain call among the cast of a critically-panned West End production of John Osborne’s The World of Paul Slickey, in 1959, she responded to audience booing by raising two fingers and shouting: “Go f--- yourselves.”

"Toss (something) back and forth" = ném qua ném lại -> nghĩa bóng là thảo luận, tranh luận về các ý tưởng, luận điểm hoặc cãi vã, chửi bới nhau.

Ví dụ
However, each part of the coauthored (đồng tác giả) paper is the product of an individual author who produces representations that can be tossed back and forth.

Another fireball materialized (hình thành) in thin air and began tossing left and right in a parabolic arc. It would disappear, then reappear, and continue its tossing back and forth again for several minutes each time.

My eye's tear as I toss back and forth. I stare with these same empty eyes and look at these same empty walls. These late nights are too quite and too tough on me. I spend a lot of time just lying here trying to sleep so hard.

After being toss back and forth a friend of my mom's took us in and she agreed to get help. There's life after the pain. On that day my mom admitted she had a problem and needed help was when her deliverance (giải thoát) took place.

Ví dụ
I could have bitten my tongue off. I wrapped my arm around her shoulder and pulled her close. She nestled into me, her head still turned in his direction. I longed to give her the world.

I could have bitten my tongue off (as is so often the case on that godforsaken platform). Not because the point about outside movement power is unimportant, but because I had been trying to put off getting sucked into the 2020 horserace for as long as possible.

“I was at my daughter’s softball game, and it took so long for him to get on. He finally hopped on, I was not in the room, I was on the phone preoccupied, and he goes, ‘Hahaha, right on time.’ I said, ‘Yeah, right on time if you’re three hours late!’ and not a peep was made on my phone call. Ví dụ
I just wanted to find out why you were tossing my name around.

People toss the name around as if we're all supposed to know everything about it.

One day every human who ever lived will bow down before the name of Jesus Christ. Those who toss His name around lightly will face unbearable shame in that moment.

Before he is expose and dare risk losing his flock (giáo dân) and “all” their money by leaving his church; he will “attempt” to “appear” to have converted from his wicked (gian ác) ways and even have the audacity (cả gan) to toss Jesus' name around at the end of a couple of prayers?

shared from fb đào trung thành,

"Friendship not passion is the basis of true, lasting love."

Prince Harry was first to drop L-bomb, left 'in a trance (hôn mê)' after first date with Meghan Markle, new book claims.

"There's so much I love about you, inside and out, and I won't drop the 'L' bomb yet, but I love your eyes, I love your lips, you're patter's alright. [...]

Want to drop the L-bomb for the first time? Does the world need to know how amazing your BFF is? Do you love your dog more than you could ever love any human? "Since Hector was a pup" = khi Hector còn là thanh niên -> nghĩa là rất lâu trước đây, từ thời xa xưa. Trong thần thoại Hy Lạp, Hector là hoàng tử thành Troia, là một trong những chiến binh vĩ đại nhất của cuộc chiến thành Troia. Hector là con trai của Priam, vua của thành Troia, và nữ hoàng Hecuba.

Ví dụ
