"Law of the jungle" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Nate Johnston on Unsplash

"Law of the jungle" = luật rừng -> nghĩa là kẻ mạnh nhất, tàn nhẫn nhất trong nhóm/xã hội sẽ sống sót.

Ví dụ
UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash on Friday welcomed an agreement on the demarcation (phân ranh giới) of maritime (biển) borders signed recently between Egypt and Greece, saying it is a “victory for international law over the law of the jungle”.

Where there are no property rights, the law of the jungle prevails (thắng thế). And now vulnerable (yếu đuối) groups, and the capital’s population as a whole, are facing a new danger – the ING City project, which has the makings of an environmental and human disaster.

In a lengthy essay (bài văn) published this week on the website Medium, Mr. Zarif wrote that the international community faced an important decision: “Do we maintain respect for the rule of law, or do we return to the law of the jungle?”

"Be ruled out of court" nghĩa là bị cản trở bởi những tình huống không lường trước, trở nên bất khả thi. Thường nghe ở Anh.

Ví dụ
Such questions may be ruled out of court, but it leaves the idea of non-separability (không tách rời) (coupled with locality) something of a mystery.

The problem is not that society's usual standards of evidence and procedure in coming to judgments of social policy have been misapplied to gays; rather, when it comes to gays, the standards themselves have simply been ruled out of court and disregarded (bỏ qua) in favor of mechanisms (cơ chế) that encourage unexamined (không bị tra xét) fear and hatred.

How can a slave prove outrages (xúc phạm) perpetrated (phạm tội) upon him by his master or overseer (giám thị), when his own testimony (lời khai) and that of all his fellow-slaves, his kindred (họ hàng), associates, and acquaintances, is ruled out of court? and when he is entirely in the power of those who injure him, and when the only care necessary, on their part, is, to see that no white witness is looking on.

"No hard and fast rules" nghĩa là không có quy tắc nào cứng nhắc, bất di bất dịch cả.

Ví dụ
No hard and fast rules are being proposed in the RMP for developing and meeting these objectives.

There are no hard and fast rules for writing philosophy (triết học) and any more than there are hard and fast rules for writing poetry or history.

As there are no hard and fast rules ordaining (quy định) the sizes of severance packages, likewise there are no hard and fast rules overseeing what exactly goes into them.

There are no hard and fast rules as to how long we should go on with a programme before changing it, as this depends so much on the type of programme, the person it is for, and the person or people running it.

"Rule (someone or something) with a rod of iron" hoặc "rule with an iron rod/hand/fist" nghĩa là thống trị bằng bàn tay sắt, độc tài, độc đoán, hoặc kiểm soát ai/điều gì một cách nghiêm ngặt, cực đoan.

Ví dụ
Well, Jesus is going to rule with a rod of iron and everybody will live a perfect life.

He that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations, and he shall rule them with a rod of iron.

As kings, the saints (thánh) will rule with a rod of iron and will conduct war tribunals (tòa án), judge, and administrate punishments (quản lý hình phạt) on sinners (tội nhân).

The man child is a prophetic (tiên tri) picture of the birth of Christ's full spiritual (tâm linh) stature in as many disciples (tông đồ) (men and women) that qualify to rule the nations with a rod iron during the millennial reign (trị vì) of Christ, with Christ.

"Cause the ruin of" nghĩa là gây ra sự đổ nát hoặc tàn phá cái gì.

Ví dụ
Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of one for whom Christdied.

The rents of the landlords (địa chủ) might be reduced without causing the ruin of the agricultural classes.

In particular, he noticed if we say that non-Euclidean geometries (hình học) cause the ruin of the Kantian theory of space, then we necessarily have also to say that relativity (thuyết tương đối) causes the ruin of his theory of time.

Considering the moral (đạo đức) person of the State as a being produced by reason because it is not a man, he might wish the enjoy the rights of the citizen without wanting to fulfill the duties (làm tròn nghĩa vụ) of the subject, an injustice (bất công) whose spread would cause the ruin of the body politic.

"Lie in ruins" = nằm trên đống đổ nát -> nghĩa là bị phá hủy, tàn phá hoàn toàn.

Ví dụ
The great construction projects of the final great age lie in ruins, destined (dự định) never to be completed.

It seems to lie in ruins, waiting for a modern miracle to resurrect (hồi sinh) it and imbue (hấp thụ) new life to the Chinese society it has traditionally defended.

I will scatter (làm cho chạy tán loạn) you among the nations and will draw out my sword and pursue you. Your land will become desolate (tan hoang), and your cities will lie in ruins.

Villages lay in ruins because there was no one to tend them. The ground was strewn (ngổn ngang) with the skulls and the bones of thousands of Indians who had died and none was left to burry them.

"Self-preservation is the first law of nature" nghĩa là gì?

"Self-preservation is the first law of nature" = tự vệ là quy luật tự nhiên -> nghĩa là mọi sinh vật đều chiến đấu để tồn tại, đó là điều bình thường khi con người luôn nghĩ đến bản thân trước hết.

Ví dụ
For the security forces to allow such large movement of people from the North to the South is, indeed, a worrisome development and indicates that they are overwhelmed and lack the capacity to protect the South and South East from this health and security crisis (khủng khoảng). Self-preservation is the first law of nature. We cannot fold our arms and watch a crisis grow.

For as long as I can remember in my adult life, the notion (khái niệm) that self-preservation is the first law of nature had appeared so obvious that it was never questioned.

While urging all communities in Igboland to be vigilant (cảnh giác) and resist any violation of the lockdown, ASATU noted that self-preservation is the first law of nature. The group also warned any persons living in the bushes in Igboland to leave immediately, saying that such people constituted a security risk.

"The letter of the law" = câu chữ của luật -> nghĩa là đúng như trong luật, áp dụng luật pháp.

Ví dụ
If you are trying to force these people to move out, you must work closely with your attorney (người được ủy quyền). Depending on where you live, it can be very difficult to evict (đuổi) tenants (nguời thuê). You need to follow the letter of the law in order to ensure that you can get them out.

When he first started in law enforcement, he says it was very much about the letter of the law and things were handled in very specific (củ thể) ways.

USA Today turns over some op-ed space to David Rothkopf, host of Deep State Radio, who declares that “the threat posed by Trump’s musing about illegally delaying the election must be seen not in terms of the letter of the law but of Trump’s intent (mục đích), of his situation and of his history.”

-----
A German court has ruled hangovers are an "illness", in a case against the maker of an anti-hangover drink.

The firm was taken to court in Frankfurt after being accused of making illegal (phi pháp) health claims (tuyên bố về sức khỏe) about its anti-hangover shots and drinks powders.

In its ruling, the court said illnesses (bệnh, thời kỳ đau ốm) included even small or temporary changes (thay đổi nhiệt độ) to the body's normal state (trạng thái bình thường của cơ thể).

Food products (thực phẩm chức năng), including drinks, cannot be marketed (không được tiếp thị là) as being able to prevent (ngăn chặn) or treat (điều trị) illnesses, it added.

"Information about a food product cannot ascribe (gán cho, quy cho) any properties for preventing, treating or healing a human illness or give the impression of such a property," the superior regional court's ruling said.

"By an illness, one should understand even small or temporary disruptions to the normal state or normal activity of the body."

This, it said, includes the tiredness, nausea (buồn nôn) and headaches (đau đầu) commonly associated with hangovers - and which the company, which was not named in the ruling, claimed its shots and powders could cure.

"Hard cases make bad laws" nghĩa là gì?

Mateus Campos Felipe on Unsplash

"Hard cases make bad laws" = vụ (kiện) khó tạo ra luật tồi -> nghĩa là luật dựa trên những tình huống/trường hợp đặc biệt thì khó áp dụng trong cuộc sống.

Ví dụ
As the old legal maxim goes, “hard cases make bad laws.” We can say the same when it comes to personal experiences: lived experiences make bad policy (chính sách).

They say "hard cases make bad laws" and this is one of those cases. My natural inclination is to side with the Davids (the mural artists), not the Goliath (Mercedes), but if Mercedes is found to be infringing (vi phạm), that sets a precedent that can be wielded against everyone, not just giant corporations (who will always be able to afford lawyers to argue their case).

It is often said that "hard cases make bad laws." While a total handgun ban (lệnh cấm) makes sense on a superficial level, many lawful gun owners are appropriately skeptical that such a ban would be anything more than symbolic (tượng trưng).

"Can't say fairer than that" = không thể nói hay hơn vậy nữa -> nghĩa là không thể đưa ra lời đề nghị nào hấp dẫn hơn thế.

Ví dụ
If you cannot enjoy outdoor exhibits such as the Gruffalo Trail due to heavy rain you can get a voucher to comeback free of charge within the following month. You can't say fairer than that, can you? And while you are at it, why not learn the local dialect and say it in Forest?

“I hope it’s taken away the uncertainty,” said Robinson. "I’m saying, for every game that is played behind closed doors, we will give you a pro-rata refund. I can’t say fairer than that. “I waited until we had some indication of when the season would start and then I was also told the Government was hopeful some fans might be allowed back in sooner than we originally anticipated.

New Super Lucky's Tale is the sort of game that gives you a nostalgic (hoài niệm, nhớ quê hương) feeling even though you've never played it before. "That's easy for you to say" = nói như bạn thì dễ thôi -> nghĩa là bạn dễ dàng nói ra điều đó vì nó không ảnh hưởng tới mình giống như với người khác.

Ví dụ
“That’s easy for you to say. You’re not the one being stared down by these home made goodies. Could I have one now, and a couple later?” he asked,.

“That’s easy for you to say. I’m the one under attack here. Does it have a stinger? Oh no, it could sting me and I might die out here. I want my mommy.”

And I looked at him and I said, “Yeah, that’s easy for you to say because you have money. If you don’t have the money, like me, you’re struggling for the money.” And he looked at me, and it’s 33 years ago now, it was 1987, he looked at me, he said, “No, you’ll see someday when you have money, you’ll realize it’s important, but it’s not the most important.” I know that probably sounds cliché (nói sáo, rập khuôn). I came from a blue-collar neighborhood. So, we were always budgeted, and we were always struggling with dough. "Say to myself" nghĩa là gì?

"Say to oneself" = tự nói với chính mình -> nghĩa là tập trung suy nghĩ.

Ví dụ
Every time it seemed to be time to move on, something made her stay. Usually it was a fresh challenge to overcome. Give it six months, she’d say to herself when things got difficult. If it’s still bad then, it will be time to leave.

The state of our world, from climate change (biến đổi khí hậu) to gun control, keeps me up at night. I want to believe in an optimistic (tươi sáng, lạc quan) future for my (unborn) children and that we have the power to change our trajectory (quỹ đạo, đường bay). When I’m struggling, I say to myself, just focus on the immediate next step and it will all come together.

When you have more time to yourself, you might think of trying new things to alleviate the boredom. For example, you might say to yourself, “Self, if you can’t take a shopping trip to New York, why not try some yoga?”A few of us had been working out in the swimming pool in the evenings, which was great, but we wanted to mix it up a bit before casting directors for ‘Cocoon III’ started beating down the door, contracts in hand.

"I can't rightly say" nghĩa là gì?

"I can't rightly say" = tôi không thể nói chính xác/biết chắc chắn được.

Ví dụ
I've seen a lot of funny theater, so I can't rightly say if "The Play That Goes Wrong" is the funniest thing I've ever seen. But I can't rightly say it's not the funniest thing I've ever seen. And it certainly is the show that had me laughing the most consistently all the way through the entire thing.

Even so I can't rightly say that Stewart has been that sorely missed or that we were all that desperate to hear from him. Functionally speaking, the Jon Stewart worldview has never left us: the brand of probing skepticism he honed to a needle's point on "The Daily Show" is being carried forward by its alumnus Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Hasan Minhaj and Stewart's successor Trevor Noah.

I can’t rightly say that the vast majority of middle school and high school leaders are guilty of being so callous (nhẫn tâm). But it sounds like your kid’s principal could be one of the countless authority figures in our schools who, despite choosing a vocation that demands that they respect the humanity of children, operate as if younger people are second-class citizens. There are a number of reasons why certain adults behave as such, ranging from being stretched thin by a lack of resources to simply believing that they do not owe kids the respect it takes to hear them out. But the throughline is that it is a truly unhealthy way to behave toward people whose futures are so deeply tied to how they fare in their care.

"Can't say that I have" = không thể nói là tôi đã -> đây là cách trả lời "NO" lịch sự cho câu hỏi nghi vấn về việc ai đã làm gì hay đã từng ở đâu.

I told them I was already planning to break the law by turning left out of their parking lot and risking a ticket. Karen quickly stopped me. “No, you don’t have to do that,” she said. “Haven’t you ever driven through the neighborhood where Ash Creek is? Just turn right at the next stoplight.” “Can’t say that I have,” I told her. And we lived in Fairfield for 32 years. Where does this mystery road go?”

“People who engage in (tham gia) mob (đám dông) justice should know that the law will definitely be after them. “There is nobody who is above the law despite whatever grievances (mối bất bình) one might have. You cannot be a law unto yourself.”

"Strange to say" nghĩa là gì?

"Strange to say/relate" -> nghĩa là 'ngạc nhiên thay'.

Ví dụ
It sounds strange to say, but I know many of our students will have been disappointed that they lost the chance to ‘prove themselves' by taking their end of year exams.

Sure, it sounds strange to say Jackson has to improve throwing the ball after he led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes and ranked third in the league with a 113.3 passer rating. But Jackson has even acknowledged he needs to get more consistent with his passing, especially deep downfield. On throws of 20 yards or longer, Jackson completed 36.2% of his throws (17 of 47), which ranked 21st in the NFL.

It might seem strange to say, with the Flyers still in control of this matchup, leading three games to two with a chance to finish off the Canadiens on Friday night, but the top seed in this unique Eastern Conference tournament is fortunate to have the hold on this series that it does. Montreal is the scariest kind of playoff team — the underdog that has nothing to lose and is playing like it — and it will take more than some sloppy (cẩu thả, lỏng) defensive play and a soft goal allowed by Carter Hart for the Flyers to finish off the Canadiens.

"That is to say" = ấy là điều để nói -> nghĩa là nói cách khác; hoặc làm sáng tỏ và giải thích rõ hơn.

Ví dụ
That is to say, Subkhonov listens to the rapper’s high-energy music as one of many defensive tactics deployed against the perpetual enemy (kẻ thù bất diệt) of all cross-country truck drivers: drowsiness (tình trạng uể oải, ngủ gà ngủ gật).

In verses 18-23, Jesus explains the soils. He says that the seed sown along the path which was devoured by the birds, is the Word of God but it is not understood or appreciated and then the evil one (the devil) interferes and snatches away what has been sown in the hearer’s heart (v. 19). That is to say, that the hearer is the intentional target of misinformation (sự báo tin tức sai), lies, and “fake news” (spiritually speaking). So although the hearer heard the Word of God, he dismisses it and moves on to other things that sound easier or more appealing to him.

I’m taking a look at Grado’s GW100, the company’s first pair of wireless headphones, and they are unique. Every pair of wireless headphones I’ve ever reviewed have been a closed-back design. That is to say, they are isolated from the outside world with a passive acoustic seal formed by earpads so that the intrusion of external noise is kept to a minimum as well as preventing the leakage (sự lọt qua) of the sound. Wireless headphones are mainly used by people traveling on trains or walking to work who want to hear their music without wires and without hearing the surrounding sounds.

Not at all. But relaxation or recreation is the reward we give ourselves AFTER we perform our duties. They are not meant to be a substitute (thay thế) for work or responsibilities.

When we work hard we are sure to reap (gặt hái) a rich harvest (vụ mùa bội thu). Laziness is the worst enemy of success. It is said, an idle brain is a devil's workshop. Please think for a moment what makes you inactive and lazy. "Ain't got the brains God gave a squirrel" = không có bộ não mà Chúa ban cho một con sóc -> nghĩa là não rỗng, ngu ngốc hoặc thiếu ý thức. Cụm "ain't got the sense God gave geese" có nghĩa tương tự.

Ví dụ
If you can't see that Miss Prescott here's a lady, then you ain't got the brains God gave a squirrel.

I know this sounds like I ain't got the brains God gave a squirrel, but that baby sorta looks like you.

You're either about Satan's work or you ain't got the sense that God gave geese, and we don't have much time to sit and ponder (trầm tư) which it is.

Hell, he was so drunk he was always hitting everybody up for a handout. Then he'd come in here and drink it away. He never had the brains God give a squirrel.

"A light bulb going off in your brain" nghĩa là gì?

Điều khiến bạn ấn tượng nhất dạo gần đây là? Photo by Burly Vinson from Pexels

"A light bulb going off in (one's) brain" = ánh sáng lóe lên trong đầu -> nghĩa là bị ấn tượng hoặc được truyền cảm hứng bởi một ý tưởng, cái nhìn sâu sắc... "Go off" được hiểu là bật, hoạt động.

Ví dụ
When we discovered the five love languages, it was like a massive light bulb going off in both of our brains at once. I suddenly realized that Sam's main language was Acts of Service.

When you first start to feel, it will be like a light bulb going off in your brain and suddenly it all starts to fall into place. I used to be the sort of horse breaker that used martingales (đai ghì đầu), running reins (dây cương) etc...

After the session, a woman in her early forties approached the platform (bục diễn thuyết) to speak with me. We shook hands, exchanged pleasantries (lời nhận xét lịch sự), and then she got right to it. “Your speech caused a light bulb to go off in my brain this morning,” she chuckled.

"I have never talked to anyone about this. I have been living this way for so many years, and now by me just speaking out this stuff it feels like a 1000 pound weight has been lifted of my chest." At this moment I noticed there was a new expression on his face, which I had never seen previously. It was like a light bulb went off in his brain.

"All brawn and no brain" nghĩa là gì?

Em trông hiền vậy lại bảo em không thông minh là em buồn đó. Photo by Gregory Rogers from Pexels

"(Be) all brawn and no brain(s)" = toàn là bắp thịt và không có não -> nghĩa là đầu óc ngu si tứ chi phát triển, chỉ có thế mạnh thể chất còn lại không được thông minh cho lắm.

Ví dụ
She decided it must be because he was all brawn and no brains.

Graumin hated all of the clans, really, but the bears held a special place in his heart. The bears were lumbering (ì ạch), mindless oafs for the most part, all brawn and no brains.

I met her running down the stair the other day, and I thought there was an earthquake coming. But it was only her great feet pounding on the stairs. You can keep your Mollies! I don't want them. All brawn and no brains or charm!

No order will ever come from him which should properly come from the commander (trung tá) or from another officer. To the enlisted (nhập ngũ) men, the sergeant (trung sĩ) major (thiếu tá) is no caricature (tranh biếm họa) of the all brawn, no brains type top kick we see in the movies.
