Tổng thống Mỹ Donald Trump dương tính với virus corona

lây từ cố vấn thân cận sinh năm 1988 xuất thân người mẫu hope hicks... ;)
President Trump revealed (tiết lộ) early Friday morning that he and the first lady, Melania Trump, had tested positive for the coronavirus, throwing the nation’s leadership (quyền lãnh đạo đất nước) into uncertainty (bất định) and escalating (leo thang) the crisis (khủng hoảng) posed by a pandemic (đại dịch) that has already killed more than 207,000 Americans and devastated (tàn phá) the economy (nền kinh tế).

Mr. Trump, who for months has played down (nói giảm nhẹ) the seriousness of the virus and hours earlier on Thursday night told an audience that “the end of the pandemic is in sight,” will quarantine (cách ly) in the White House for an unspecified period of time, forcing him to withdraw at least temporarily from the campaign trail only 32 days before the election on Nov. 3.

"Word salad" nghĩa là gì?

"Word salad" nghĩa là hổ lốn từ/cụm từ gây khó hiểu, "xà lách chữ" -- bỏ một đống chữ vào một cái tô, trộn lên, rồi đổ ra, không nghĩa lý gì cả.

Ví dụ
To understand the term, magnetic fuzz, “a skilled artisan must wade through a morass of uncertainty and contradiction,” the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said in a nonprecedential opinion. “It is this word salad of inconsistent indirect definitions and examples that so flummoxed the district court,” the appeals court said.

Tuesday’s presidential debate (tranh luận tổng thống) was a cringeworthy (gây xấu hổ) travesty (bắt chước, bôi bác). Moderator Chris Wallace quickly lost control of Donald Trump by allowing him to bulldoze over himself and former Vice President Joe Biden. It was 90-plus minutes of attacks on Biden — both personal and political, outright lies (nói dối trắng trợn), open hostility (thù địch) and grandiose (vĩ đại, hùng vĩ, lớn lao, đại quy mô) plans with zero details. In other words, Trump’s usual empty-word salad.

In scholastic debates, one frequently deployed technique for winning a contest without really winning the argument is called “spreading,” which involves tossing so many points out there that your opponent fails to respond to them all. It helps if the “spreader” isn’t inhibited by facts, logic, or syntax, which is why it’s a likely tactic for Donald Trump in his debates with Joe Biden. Nobody tosses up a word salad like the 45th president.

"Stumble at a straw" nghĩa là gì?

"Stumble at a straw" = vấp phải cọng rơm -> nghĩa là bị cản trở/đảo lộn bởi vấn đề nhỏ nhặt.

Ví dụ
This was Kevin’s last opportunity to sample the MP4-29 before Australia. His morning’s running stumbled at a straw that required a long stop to cure – nonetheless, like Jenson yesterday, he was able to get back on track before the end of the morning’s session, and got a sizeable number of laps under his belt before the end of the day.

Last Friday, the New York Times dropped a story that instantly changed the conversation around the 2020 Democratic primary: Michael Bloomberg, the Times reported, was preparing to enter the race. His motive? Concerns that no one in the huge primary field can take out Donald Trump. But the wealthy ex-New York mayor (thị trưởng) may see his White House hopes stumble at a straw: almost no Democratic voters want him to run.

"One cannot be in two places at once" nghĩa là gì?

"One cannot be in two places at once" -> nghĩa là một người không thể ở hai hoặc nhiều nơi, làm hai hoặc nhiều việc đồng thời cùng một lúc được; "thân này ví xẻ làm đôi được".

Ví dụ
You should do your homework first because one cannot be in two places at once.

Tonight, I have to dance at my best friend's wedding, so now I will prepare dinner for my family. You know, one cannot be in two places at once.

“One cannot be in two places at once". That saying holds true for the average man, but it most definitely does not apply to the Fastest Man Alive. The Flash can run to fast that he can create multiple copies of himself, sometimes called time remnants (tàn dư, cái còn lại), through manipulating the time stream. Bart Allen, or Impulse, is one of the speedsters (xe cao tốc) most associated with this skill -- he used it during his time with Young Justice.

"Crazy enough that it might just work" nghĩa là gì?

Đâu có ai bình thường khi yêu. Photo by julio andres rosario ortiz on Unsplash

"Crazy enough that it might just work" = đủ điên rồ để hoạt động -> nghĩa là có cơ hội thành công mặc dù rất kì lạ/khác thường.

Ví dụ
By creating a counter-protest, “Depreciation Day” nudges into the picture, and reminds (gợi nhớ) reporters that not everyone has warm loving feelings for the restaurant. Or at least, that’s the plan. What do you think — crazy enough it might just work, or just crazy?

Japan is taking this to its logical conclusion (kết luận) after its economic minister announced he wants the Nikkei to go up 17 percent in the next month alone. It's a crazy plan. Crazy enough that it might just work.

A Reddit user by the name of u/Ihaha07 recently showed how they were able to turn a working fireplace into a fridge in just a few basic steps. And it’s crazy enough that it might just work for other players, too.

If you've ever found yourself wishing that Miss Patty would work her sensually (dâm dục) liberated magic on uptight town leader Taylor Doose, then this fan theory may be just what you're looking for. And, yes, it might be crazy, but it's also crazy enough that it might just work — as Bustle's Michelle Lulic pointed out, Miss Patty and Taylor may seem like opposites, but they also have a lot in common (điểm chung).

"Make goo-goo eyes at" nghĩa là gì?

"Make goo-goo eyes at (one)" -> nghĩa là nhìn ai với ánh mắt tình tứ và say mê, thường ám chỉ hai người để ý nhau.

Ví dụ
Their wedding kiss lasted for more than a minute. They make goo-goo eyes at each other. They're as touchy-feely as teens. They're seniors from Alabama and viral Internet stars. They obviously adore each other.

The display case by the front door, with its rotating cast of guilty pleasures, beckons passerby. It’s hard not to leer at voluptuous (gợi cảm, khoái lạc) layer cakes festooned with marshmallows (kẹo dẻo) or Oreo cookies, piped rosettes and other highly enticing frosting décor. You’ll likely make goo-goo eyes at a New York cheesecake and unconsciously lick your lips over a berrylicious cobbler before making your selection.

The two grew up in the same neighborhood, but didn't date - "or make goo-goo eyes at each other" - until they were students at Booker T. Washington High School," said Mary. The couple dated two years and and married after Willie's graduation and Mary a senior. Willie works for Willis-Knighton Health System and Mary retired after being employed 39 years at Fryemaster. They have three children: Willie Bradford III, of Houston, and Kelisha Bradford and Marlon and Candace Bradford, and their daughter, Bellair Bradford, all of Shreveport.

"Laugh at the carpet" nghĩa là gì?

"Laugh at the carpet" = cười úp mặt lên thảm -> nghĩa là cười ngượng ngùng/xấu hổ; nôn mửa lên sàn (bất kể sàn có trải thảm hay không).

Ví dụ
You used to wake up to laugh at the carpet from your roommate. You still do, but now your roommate is a dog.

"At 2:44 p.m., Mr. Joseph is seen seated, covered in perspiration (mồ hôi)," the suit said. "He continues to laugh at the carpet. After raising himself to the window, Mr. Joseph yells 'I'm throwing up! I can't breathe!' "

Thaxter testified that he saw a student playing basketball outside who appeared sober. The one who answered the door was unsteady on her feet and had slurred speech, he said, and that another tried to run from police, he said. The last was passed out on a couch next to laugh at the carpet.

"Leap at the chance" nghĩa là gì?

"Leap at the chance/an opportunity" có leap là nhảy lên, lao vào -> cụm từ này nghĩa là nắm ngay lấy cơ hội.

Ví dụ
So it’s no surprise to see the NBA leap at an opportunity to begin the process of returning: The league is exploring the idea of reopening team facilities as early as May 1 in states that have loosened stay-at-home restrictions, two sources familiar with league operations told

The actor, who has already voiced an animated Man of Steel, would surely leap at the chance to play him in the forthcoming superhero movie (bộ phim siêu anh hùng sắp tới).

The Clear Clear fruit allows the user to turn themselves and other objects invisible at will. While many swordsmen would leap at the chance to get this fruit, Zoro is not one of them. Zoro fights with a swordsman's honor code, and would only stoop (hạ mình, cúi xuống) to a sneak attack if it would save his friends.

Để chống dịch Covid-19 hiệu quả

đó là trả tiền cho người dân để họ tiêm vắc-xin, ở mỹ là 1.000 usd/người ;)
...According to data collected by Opportunity Insights, a research group based at Harvard, consumer spending (chi tiêu dùng) has fallen the most in high-income (thu nhập cao) ZIP codes. But those with high incomes have experienced almost no fall in employment (không bị mất việc). They are spending less not by necessity but by choice (tiêu thụ ít do lựa chọn).

Paradoxically (nghịch lý thay), this behavior may be helping to drive the stock market (thị trường chứng khoán) higher (tăng điểm). When income isn’t spent, it is saved. Over the last four months, the personal saving rate (tỷ lệ tiết kiệm cá nhân) has reached its highest levels on record. An increase in saving makes more dollars available for lending to borrowers and thereby reduces interest rates (giảm lãi suất). Since January, the yield on 10-year inflation-adjusted bonds has fallen more than 100 basis points. As the return on fixed-income assets declines, expected cash flows from owning stock become relatively more attractive, and stock prices rise.

...No vaccine will be 100 percent effective, which means that getting vaccinated won’t be sufficient to protect yourself from the virus. But if enough people get vaccinated, society will develop herd immunity (miễn nhiễm cộng đồng). With widespread, even if imperfect, vaccination, the virus won’t be able to spread. No one knows for sure, but experts believe that 70 to 90 percent of the population will need to be vaccinated.

Immunology, meet economics. One of the first principles of economics — perhaps the most important — is that people respond to incentives. Applying this principle to the case at hand, Mr. Litan recommends that the government pay $1,000 to whoever gets the vaccine. With a large enough incentive, most Americans are likely to get vaccinated.

"Lie at death's door" nghĩa là gì?

"Lie at death's door" = nằm tại cửa thần chết, hay knock on death's door = gõ cửa thần chết -> nghĩa là sắp chết, hấp hối, lâm chung.

Ví dụ
The median stay for Covid-19 patients who died in the hospital was only five days, compared with two weeks in the United States. “That really speaks to a system that abandons its people until they are so sick that they are almost at death’s door,” Apoorva said.

In hindsight (sự nhận thức muộn), I know that I never got close enough to knock on death’s door. I suffered excruciating (hết sức đau khổ) pain and relentless (gay gắt, không ngơi ngớt) bouts (cơn) of high fever (40C/104F) for 12 days while in isolation at home, but my body held firm. I spent a week in hospital, but didn’t need intensive care. My lungs were infected with a mix of virus and bacteria (vi khuẩn), but it didn’t graduate to acute respiratory syndrome (hội chứng hô hấp cấp tính).

Most miners receive no benefits for black lung. To receive benefits, a miner must have worked for 15 years in the mines and be 100 percent disabled. This places many miners in a Catch-22 situation when they begin to develop black lung. They are faced with a choice of either leaving mining, and giving up their source of income, or continuing to work until they lie at death’s door.

Bill Edgar has, in his own words, “no respect for the living” (không tôn trọng người sống). Instead, his loyalty (trung thành) is to the newly departed clients who hire Mr Edgar — known as “the coffin confessor” — to carry out their wishes from beyond the grave (ngôi mộ).

Mr Edgar runs a business in which, for $10,000, he is engaged by people “knocking on death’s door” (gõ cửa thần chết) to go to their funerals (đám tang) or gravesides and reveal the secrets (tiết lộ bí mật) they want their loved ones to know.

“They’ve got to have a voice and I lend my voice for them,” Mr Edgar said.

Mr Edgar, a Gold Coast private investigator, said the idea for his graveside hustle came when he was working for a terminally ill man.

“We got on to the topic of dying and death and he said he’d like to do something,” Mr Edgar said.

“I said, ‘Well, I could always crash (lẻn vào không có giấy mời, lẻn vào không có vé) your funeral for you’,” and a few weeks later the man called and took Mr Edgar up on his offer and a business was born.

In almost two years he has “crashed” 22 funerals and graveside events, spilling the tightly-held secrets of his clients who pay a flat fee of $10,000 for his service.

"Don't give up your day job" nghĩa là gì?

"Don't give up your day job" -> nghĩa là đừng từ bỏ công việc hiện tại để theo đuổi ước mơ vì khả năng thành công là rất nhỏ.

Ví dụ
Don't give up your day job! The agent who advised (tư vấn) John Bishop NOT to go into comedy (hài kịch) full-time.

The old adage "Don’t give up your day job" doesn’t exactly apply (áp dụng) to Southland chiropterologist (bat expert) Dr Ian Davidson-Watts who, until recently, was the Gore District Council’s regulatory and planning general manager.

Don’t give up your day job, Mason. Chelsea battered Everton on Sunday with this goal from Mason Mount the pick. It was a very smart finish from the England youngster (thanh niên), though we are not sure about that celebration!

Let’s keep up the good work and support each other to get through these difficult days and look after the most vulnerable (dễ tổn thương) members of our society. As some have told us today upon release of our video- Don’t give up your day job!

"Nothing to sneeze at" nghĩa là gì?

"Nothing to sneeze at" có sneeze là hắt hơi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đáng quan tâm, đáng có; không nên xem thường.

Ví dụ
In the end, missed chances and a really fun and up to task Leeds side made for an OK night for City. Still, a draw away from home is nothing to sneeze at. Keep in mind this first month will essentially be pre season for Man City.

Weight was the biggest factor for Bavarian brand, however. BMW said the canvas top is roughly 40 percent lighter than its predecessor (người tiền nhiệm). Considering there are almost 500 pounds of difference between convertible (có thể bỏ mui) and standard 4-Series coupes, that’s nothing to sneeze at. But is it aesthetically (về mặt thẩm mỹ) pleasing?

In addition, having more-frequent traffic on the website creates potential for decent advertising revenue, even in a scenario without TikTok. Walmart launched its in-house advertising offering earlier this year, a timely endeavor as e-commerce sales jumped 97% last quarter. The retailer also announced a partnership with Shopify SHOP -2.41% in July that would add 1,200 more small-business vendors (đại lý) to its third-party marketplace, which should further help its advertising business. has more than 400 million monthly web and mobile visitors, according to SimilarWeb, nothing to sneeze at.

"Pale at the thought of" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jose de la Cruz

"Pale at the thought of" = tái mặt nghĩ về -> nghĩa là sợ hãi, lo lắng và mệt mỏi khi nghĩ về điều đang xảy ra.

Ví dụ
Be kind. So often we scoff (chế nhạo) at the everyday niceties (sự đúng đắn, tế nhị), at the empty smiles and faceless ‘how are you’s. So often we pale at the thought of ringing a friend we haven’t spoken to in a while. College, to me, now seems unreal, like a dream I had about someone else’s life; so often I wonder whether I should be disturbing my friends, emailing my professors, sharing my experience. I’ve decided to ignore those doubts, though. Physical self-isolation is bad enough. And trust me – if they’re your friends, they will always be happy to hear from you. Especially in a time like this.

If you turned pale at the thought of paying close to $1,000 to get the new iPad Pro and its trackpad-equipped keyboard cover, don't worry -- there will be a much more affordable alternative. Logitech has introduced a $150 Combo Touch keyboard case for the 2019 iPad, 2019 iPad Air and 2017 iPad Pro that includes a trackpad to take advantage of iPadOS 13.4's imminent mouse support. They all attach using Apple's Smart Connector and offer many perks similar to Apple's Magic Keyboard, including backlit keys and trackpad gestures.

Some gardeners pale at the thought of planting the above collection of species, typically grown indoors, in the ground outside. Greater attention than usual should be paid to the soil, which must drain well to satisfy the requirements of these tropicals (nhiệt đới). A major concern, of course, is protection from cold and, in truth, it would be better not to make a shade garden of these tropicals where winter freezes occur. But I have seen all of them growing well in the San Fernando Valley where overhead protection was provided by tall trees. In fact, the deeper the shade, the warmer the location, since heat absorbed by the ground during the day cannot escape to the sky at night, being trapped by foliage (tán lá) overhead.

"Pounce at the death" nghĩa là gì?

"Pounce at the death" -> nghĩa là ghi bàn gỡ hòa vào phút cuối.

Ví dụ
Millwall pounce at the death to seal amazing victory.

It was unclear exactly who he was singling out for the “childish decisions” that he said cost his side so dear but the finger could probably be pointed at Chris Smalling, who was left bamboozled (lừa bịp) by Riyad Mahrez’s quick feet for Jamie Vardy’s opening goal and was then at fault for allowing Maguire to pounce at the death. Yet the evening could have ended so differently had United been more clinical in front of goal, with Anthony Martial also spurning a great chance just after the break.

Earlier, Danny Graham poached an 87th-minute equaliser to earn Swansea a 2-2 draw (hòa) with Arsenal at the Liberty Stadium in a game that finished amid a rapid exchange of goals. Arsenal fought back from behind to lead through a quick-fire pair of strikes from Lukas Podolski and Kieran Gibbs in the last 10 minutes, only for Graham to pounce at the death to take the tie to a replay. Swansea had led through a 58th-minute effort by Michu, scorer of both goals in a 2-0 Premier League win at the Emirates Stadium in December, but Swansea appeared to be heading out until Graham found the roof of the net with three minutes to play.

"Lie down and die" = nằm xuống và chết đi -> nghĩa là bỏ đi, từ bỏ hi vọng, mơ ước đi.

Ví dụ
Even if they’re without Adebayo and Dragic on Sunday, Miami leader Jimmy Butler said the team isn’t going to lie down and die, according (theo như) to ESPN’s Malika Andrews.

We don’t lie down and die on the battlefield (đấu trường) of reality TV! We persevere (kiên trì). Let us persevere together, much like the Spartans at war with the Trojans after the horse thing. Just like that.

They didn't give in. They didn't lie down and die. That's positive and will stand us in good stead against teams in and around more where we expect to be.

“We’re quite happy for four days’ rest. We’ve got a small squad (nhóm) but the boys have earned the right to go there. “It can be easy to lie down and die but we never have done. We’ll enjoy the rest and win.”

"Self-praise is no recommendation at all" nghĩa là gì?

"Self-praise is no recommendation at all" = tự khen mình không phải điều khuyến khích -> nghĩa là nếu tự khen mình thì người khác nghĩ bạn tự cao tự đại, khoe khoang và họ sẽ xem thường bạn.

Ví dụ
Ok so the saying is true that “Self-praise is no recommendation at all”?

Never praise yourself in front of them! Self-praise is no recommendation at all.

It is important for our customers that we make a decision at an early date, as it would otherwise be time for them to begin investing in their trade fair presentations (trình diễn).

"Top of the morning to you" -> nghĩa là lời chào buổi sáng.

Watching this line up made me excited about fashion, it felt so modern (hiện đại), and every girl looked glowing, sexy and comfortable. Bravo to Piergiorgio and his team.
