"Highways and byways" nghĩa là gì?

"Highways and byways" -> nghĩa là toàn bộ đường đi, con phố của một khu vực.

Ví dụ
Amazon has revealed the first of three customized electric delivery vehicles to be built by Rivian. The company says it expects to have 10,000 of them in service by 2022 and a total of 100,000 plying (làm việc miệt mài) the highways and byways of North America by 2030. It’s all part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge, which commits the company to being carbon neutral by 2040.

Most Black travelers in America know the Green Book, a travel guide published from 1937 to 1966, by name and by heart. For decades its existence distilled a sense of safety, certainty, and preparation for Black people who took to the highways and byways of this vast (to lớn) country.

Autumn. Many consider it the finest (đẹp nhất) of seasons. Even folks who don't usually venture out to the countryside are tempted to take to the highways and byways during September and October.

We’re going to be spending a lot more time outdoors this autumn, trampin’ (đi bộ) the highways and byways, which is why we’re pretty taken with these Lennox boots from Sorel (main picture). Fully waterproof (chống nước) with a grippy sole, they’ll keep you on your toes.

"Hightail it out of" nghĩa là gì?

"Hightail it out of" -> nghĩa là nhanh chóng rời đi.

Ví dụ
Ask yourself: “Where are some areas I might feel uncomfortable, and what would be the escape routes?” This could be remote stretches of road or parts of the path that have blind spots. Having a plan in mind can make you more confident (tự tin) should the need arise in real time to hightail it out of there ASAP.

Cal Fire spokesman Scott McLean said responders occasionally (thỉnh thoảng) find wildlife (động vật hoang dã) in the course of firefighting. “Not an overabundance, of course, because they’re smart enough to hightail it out of there,” he said Friday.

After he was shot, the ornery (xấu tính) cowboy used his final moments to urge his companions (bạn đồng hành) to hightail it out of there rather than risk confronting (đối mặt) the Robin King directly.

Malone was adamant that he and Harriet (Katherine Dow Blyton) belonged together — so much so that he begged (cầu xin) her not to marry Will. What’s more, he even suggested that they hightail it out of the village together.

“Be infested with” nghĩa là gì?

“Be infested with” -> nghĩa là bị tràn vào/vây quanh quấy phá, phá hoại (thường là côn trùng).

Ví dụ
If the center seam of the pod pops with gentle pressure, they can be picked. Don’t collect pods that are already open, as they might be infested with insects. Place collected pods in paper bags or paper grocery sacks. Plastic bags collect unwanted moisture (hơi ẩm).

Ticks travel on their hosts and can be found in many places outdoors, including parks and backyards. Using precaution (sự đề phòng) in areas most likely to be infested with ticks, such as wooded or grassy areas (especially where deer and other wildlife are present), is the best way to avoid potential infection.

The most common cause of skin allergies (dị ứng) in dogs is fleas (bọ chét). Flea allergy dermatitis (viêm da dị ứng), or FAD, occurs when a dog’s immune system (hệ miễn dịch) overreacts to the proteins in the flea saliva (nước bọt). A dog doesn’t need to be infested with fleas in order to suffer from flea allergy dermatitis, either, as one bite can be enough to make a dog itch for days. Many breeds are predisposed (ảnh hưởng đến, dẫn đến) to allergies, and these sensitivities develop when your dog is between one and three years old. It could start as a seasonal allergy and grow into a year-round irritation, too.

“Be in good odour with” nghĩa là gì?

“Be in good odour with (one)” -> nghĩa là có cảm tình/quan hệ tốt đẹp với ai.

Ví dụ
“It helps him to be in good odour with them [Saudi officials],” the source said. “The regional politics are very important to them. He will do what he has to do.”

Across the other side of the country, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is prepared to offer a multi-million-dollar incentive to get the grand final. Queensland is already in good odour with the AFL — when McLachlan first asked states to help save the season, WA made a “take it or leave it” offer with rigorous quarantine conditions, but Palaszczuk responded with a deal that gave players some freedom of movement.

“On 15 November, his (Chanda’s) fall from grace was confirmed when the Drug Enforcement Commission arrested him on suspicion of corruption (tham nhũng) in public office. No observer in Lusaka believes this could have occurred if he had remained in good odour with the President. As Chanda’s star has waned, that of his great rival, Kaizar Zulu, has climbed ever higher, ending a long period out in the cold.”

“Be hoist with his own petard” nghĩa là gì?

“Be hoist with (one's) own petard” có petard là bộc phá để phá cửa -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tự mình mắc vào bẫy mình đặt; gậy ông đập lưng ông.

Ví dụ
For years, Mr. Modi has won crucial support from moderates and the middle class by projecting himself as India’s “economic messiah,” said Sumantra Bose, a political scientist at the London School of Economics. And if the economy can’t pull itself out of a nose dive, Mr. Bose added, “the messiah may be hoist with his own petard.”

“In the end it is her animosity (hận thù), frenetic (điên cuồng), irrational (mất lý trí) and baseless actions against this president that will ultimately hoist her on her own petard,” she continued. “And might I add, no one deserves it more.”

Mr Kuten, I get it that Christians are anathema (đáng nguyền rủa, nghê tởm) to you. That's okay. No harm done. Your vindictiveness (tính chất hận thù) is only words, and words don't kill. People do. But beware of the hate speech mantra. As a self-appointed crusader "to call out especially those leaders who would divide us", you are being hoist with your own petard.

"The train has left the station" nghĩa là gì?

Tàu đã rời ga không thể quay đầu. Photo by Mark Plötz from Pexels

"The train (has) (just) left the station" = tàu vừa rời ga -> nghĩa là vụt mất cơ hội/khả năng/lựa chọn.

Ví dụ
“In the early days of COVID, some transactions got completed,” said Paul Reaumond, a vice chairman (phó chủ tịch) at CBRE. “Some renewals (gia hạn), expansions, new transactions, deals where the train had left the station—most of those folks went ahead and finalized the transactions.

The most explicit (rõ ràng) warnings were made to Dobrynin. At the end of September, Kissinger called in the Soviet ambassador (đại sứ) to say that Moscow's lack of help on Vietnam made progress on arms control talks unlikely. As they were talking, Nixon telephoned, by prearrangement (sắp xếp trước). "The president just told me in that call," Kissinger said to Dobrynin, "that as far as Vietnam is concerned, the train has just left the station."

“The national economy is changing,” says Cathy Kunkel, who is seeking a congressional (quốc hội) seat in West Virginia’s Second District. “From a West Virginia perspective (quan điểm), we can’t change that. That train has left the station. We need to manage the transition that is now underway. I certainly understand the frustrations — that livelihoods are vanishing (biến mất). But if we refuse to change and keep saying no, no, no, we will get run over by this train.”

"Be caught with chaff” nghĩa là gì?

"Be caught with chaff” có chaff là lời bỡn cợt, trêu chọc -> cụm từ này nghĩa là dễ bị lừa, cả tin.

Ví dụ
He was commenting on the police's “Semak Mule” website and application, which the public can use to check on bank accounts used by scammers. “MCPF welcomes the introduction of the Semak Mule application as it can assist the public in being more vigilant against scammers. “The public must also step up their vigilance (sự cảnh giác, thận trọng) and not be caught with chaff by scammers, ” he added. Lee reminded members of the public to always verify any calls received from any so-called authorities.

I am not one who is caught with chaff. Intelligence is different from information and being smart is in many ways having objectivity. The dots weren’t connecting. So, I got up one morning, had breakfast, and shot the tube. In fact, I emptied the entire clip into it. Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Click-Click-Click ----. Blimey! I shot the telly! Perhaps you will choose to consider me a happy idiot, who doesn’t think about what he doesn’t think about, but this is not the case. I most assuredly have all my marbles and maybe even some of yours! Better go check.

Part of the reason so many both on the left and in the liberal establishment hold such intense hatred for the tabloid press and for right-wing broadsheets is that they believe them to be incredibly dangerous. A large portion of this fear rests on their low view of the general public. The narrative such people use to explain their own repeated electoral defeats blames dull-headed Brits who are caught with chaff by rampant misinformation (thông tin sai/đánh lạc hướng tràn khắp), and fake news – and supposedly extreme-right commentators whose views they lap up. We saw this theme played out on a grand scale in the wake of the Brexit vote, when Leavers were branded brainwashed idiots (những tên ngốc bị tẩy não) swayed by whatever ‘far right’ rubbish they happened to find in the paper or on TV.

“Be au fait with” nghĩa là gì?

“Be au fait with” có au fait (tiếng Pháp) là đúng với thực tế (to the fact) -> cụm từ này nghĩa là được trang bị đầy đủ kiến thức/thông tin mới nhất về chủ đề nào đó.

Ví dụ
You may be au fait with London’s finest fashion influencers, but cross the channel and there’s an equally as stylish pool of Parisian style mavens to offer daily inspiration.

“It has become essential that people are educated around the risks, are au fait with the clever tactics being used, know about the latest scams, so they can identify some of the most common threats,” concludes Collard. “This is the only way to minimise the risk of being duped and maximise personal and professional protection.”

Lightroom has been around long enough now that most photographers are au fait with it, many even experienced. But with modern software — particularly in our industry — the depth is almost unknowable. So, here are 15 tricks which can save you time, and I'd bet there are very few photographers, if any, that already knew all of these.

“A word with" nghĩa là gì?

“A word with (one)" -> nghĩa là một cuộc đối thoại/nói chuyện ngắn hoặc sơ lược với ai, đặc biệt là về sự cảnh cáo, quở trách hoặc cuộc điều tra.

Ví dụ
Oliver's sister Kate Hudson also recently opened up about her time during the pandemic, and revealed that she had initially took it upon herself to have a word with her brother to make sure that he was looking after himself, as his routine in quarantine was very different to her own.

While bowling, he was encountered by a situation that seemed familiar. RCB’s Aaron Finch had walked way out of his crease before a ball was bowled. Ashwin, however, did not do the ‘Mankad’ and allowed him to return back to the crease (nếp gấp). The whole incident had Delhi Capitals’ coach Ricky Ponting laughing out loud as well. Before the start of the season, he had a word with Ashwin to not use Mankad’ as a mode of dismissal.

When my sister called the other day, in a meltdown over our dad’s persistent social life, she pleaded with me to have a word with him. She’d done “bad cop” by yelling at him, and insisting he was going to get himself killed. It was my turn, and I had to do “good cop”. I had to appeal to his emotions, and persuade him to – for our sake at least – stop frolicking (vui nhộn, nô đùa) around as if there isn’t a pandemic on. Which of us is more deranged, it’s – at times – hard to tell. Especially over all the crying and yelling.

Ví dụ
The Stoke Seniors group is gathered and the room is alive with the sound of a piano, soon to be playing a recognisable, You’ll Never Walk Alone to a chorus of singers.

For the third consecutive year, Yanney Heritage Park will be alive with the colors and sights of the season during the Holiday Light Festival. The event is scheduled Dec. 5-12 at the popular park in southwest Kearney.

The hills are alive with the sound of Florence Price’s music these days. My Urbana, Illinois 24/7 classical station programs her by the hour, it seems. And justifiably so: Price (1887-1953) was the first African-American woman composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra, and her lifetime compositional output was astounding in its quantity (số lượng) and variety (sự đa dạng).

“A passing acquaintance with” nghĩa là gì?

“A passing acquaintance with” = sự hiểu biết thoáng qua/ngẫu nhiên -> nghĩa là kiến thức hạn chế, không biết nhiều về ai/điều gì.

Ví dụ
I met one of these people a long time ago, and at the time there was no reason for us to become friends. There was no reason for us to not become friends either, mind you, it was just that it was a passing acquaintance with no reason to be anything more. No reason except this person was Vicki Evans, that is. There was no such thing as “passing” anything with Vicki. Vicki liked to talk and she liked people, and she frequently added those two together to make friends with the most unlikely of people. No, actually, it was more than that. Vicki was one of those people who made themselves family.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have a family connection to Joey Smallwood; he was my mother’s brother. But I’m not his apologist. I’ve never been a member of any political party. I write this letter as a proud Newfoundlander who fears for the future of my province. I was also a journalist who believes that facts matter. Oddly, much of the information outlined above is either unknown or ignored, although anyone with 20 minutes to spare and even a passing acquaintance with Google could have discovered it.

Trump is the ringmaster (người chỉ đạo buổi biểu diễn xiếc) of today’s supercharged political circus. The role comes naturally to him. It is a part of his persona and his modus operandi (cách làm việc). He is a master of innuendo (lời ám chỉ) and hyperbole (lời ngoa dụ). He is not troubled by moral or ethical standards (tiêu chuẩn đạo đức), and has no more than a passing acquaintance with the truth. He delights in churning up chaos and seeks to exploit it to his advantage. He early latched on to Twitter, and he spews out with seeming impunity so many tweets that opponents are hard pressed to know how or whether to respond. Mud-slinging seems to be the one part of the job that he truly enjoys. One must grudgingly concede that he has a certain gift for it.

“With all mod cons” nghĩa là gì?

“(With) all mod cons” có mod cons là viết tắt của hai từ modern conveniences -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cùng với những tiện nghi hiện đại.

Ví dụ
Located just outside Glasgow, the luxury pad boasts an original Victorian structure which has been redeveloped and transformed with all mod cons, 10 acres of land and a host of adjoining (gần kề, kế bên) buildings - not to mention a massive man-made pond with its very own island.

This homeowner with an eye for style and the patience for attention to detail describes her interior design style as transitional (chuyển tiếp, quá độ)– classic but with all mod cons. Initially the stylish interiors of this period property are what visually dazzles you but look a bit closer and the home is packed with Syrie's beloved modern gadgets.

Even better, each beautifully-designed apartment is stunningly presented with all mod cons and its own balcony or ground-floor terrace. Unsurprisingly, they are selling quickly, so here's everything you need to know about the apartments at Henty Close off Long Road at the new Aura development, Trumpington Meadows Osprey Drive and Trumpington Meadows Riverside.

"Stay in the background" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Atahan Demir from Pexels

"(Stay) in/into the background" nghĩa là đứng ở vị trí kín đáo (không ai để ý); tránh mặt.

Ví dụ
She needs to keep being pressed and not allowed to stay in the background. This is her job.

"Ellen, Martin might be dangerous (nguy hiểm). If you want to meet him, please stay in the background, go, and have a cuppa and cake at the coffee shop. I'll introduce him to you if everything is safe,” I said to her anxiously.

Omo but jokes apart, Prince is THAT man. He has been there for her since last night, knowing very well that Dora would be overwhelmed (choáng ngợp). And he made sure to stay in the background so she has all the attention and shine.

The road to a success like this is never easy - even if it looks like that from the outside... And I’m thankful for the people who continuously walk by my side through the tough times, the lows to arrive at such highs together with me. Above all my boyfriend and coach @antony_pumpkin who has my back no matter what and was the loudest (and for the most part the only one) in our box. But most of our supporters had to stay in the background in their home unfortunately, still they’re a huge part of this achievement and I wanna thank them here!

“With you in a minute” nghĩa là gì?

“With you in a minute” = tới bên bạn trong một phút nữa -> nghĩa là xin hãy kiên nhẫn đợi thêm chút nữa, tôi sẽ có mặt sớm nhất có thể.

Ví dụ
“My biggest pet peeve (chọc tức, làm phiền) is when you are at a bar and no one acknowledges that you are waiting. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fine if it’s busy, but it makes a big difference when a bartender takes a minute to say, ‘Hey, I’m in the weeds right now, but I’ll be with you in a minute.’ Because I don’t mind waiting.”

“A person will ask, hey, why am I stopped? And they go, ‘Oh, we’ll be with you in a minute.’ I’m like, why don’t you just tell the person, ‘Listen, this is why I stopped you,'” said Starling. “Because now it automatically takes that one barrier of like, ‘Whoa, I don’t know what’s going on’ to this and I stopped you because your taillight (đèn hậu) is out.”

“I’ll never miss a pickup,” he said. One of the toughest old officers in the Newark Traffic Club, Thevenet ate it up. He nodded, asked questions, and made notes in the points directory. Finally, Thevenet shook Jim-the-driver’s hand and turned to me. “I’ll be with you in a minute,” he said. Five minutes later, the receptionist called me in. Five minutes after that, I was back out on the street. Thevenet had taken my literature, thanked me for stopping by, and shown me the door.

"There's gold in them there hills" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jakob Owens on Unsplash

"There's gold in them there hills" = có vàng ở ngọn đồi kia -> nghĩa là nơi này/việc này rất có triển vọng để kiếm tiền.

Ví dụ
Pandemic brings us all closer together- and that can only better for business .Let me say this: a crisis (khủng hoảng) can be good for business. We might all be reeling (quay cuồng, lảo đảo) from the effects of lockdown, but there’s “gold in them there hills”.

In 1885 the Harney Peak Tin Mining Company sent a “young lawyer to the Black Hills to handle mining claims,” because of the gold rush. “There’s gold in them there hills” was a common phrase used shortly after the gold was discovered in 1874 — and it started a stampede (chạy loạn) to the Black Hills by thousands in search of the precious metal and it was only natural that land claims would follow.

“This was like loading up a backboard and going cross-country to California, because there’s gold in them there hills, kind of thing,” he chuckled (cười thầm).

Anais was raring (nôn nóng) to go after finding five small specks a few days earlier near Golden. “She gets the tiniest little pieces, but it’s so fun,” said Teri. “We’ve been watching the Beverly Hillbillies.” She stopped, looked at the surrounding mountainous area and added, “There’s gold in them there hills.” And while the hunt for gold was a fun family outing, the real treasure, she said, was time spent together in a beautiful and quiet setting.

Ví dụ
I think if things are still carrying on I think you can apologise (xin lỗi) for them - I think for things in the dim and distant past it is very hard to apologise for things which you have no direct responsibility.

I confess that I am astonished (kinh ngạc) by the furore (cơn giận dữ) the wearing of masks has caused. In the dim and distant past, I was once responsible for a change in school uniform policy. It felt like a routine decision at the time.

In the dim and distant past, when I took the role of chairman (chủ tịch), I talked about diversification (đa dạng hóa) of income streams and this has been a prime example of what can be achieved.

"When you think that you've got one of his tactical (tấn công) plans covered (khống chế), he'll hit you with another tactical plan or revert to the original one that you thought he was going to start with," he observed. "In the dim and distant past, we played the first leg and what we can remember from the first leg we've put to good use.

"A thing of the past" nghĩa là gì?

"A thing of the past" -> nghĩa là lỗi thời, cũ rích, không còn xảy ra nữa.

Ví dụ
As a kid, waking up and finding out you have a snow day is one of the highlights (điểm nhấn) of many people's childhoods. But with remote (từ xa) learning, those snow days could be a thing of the past. Especially for students in the Hayward School District.

How purposeful (có mục đích) clinic design can help make COVID a thing of the past. To help lower case counts in your area, ensure your building systems and space modifications address the current reality.

It was something many customers never thought twice about until it was taken away. Now customers and restaurant workers are yearning (mong muốn) to get back inside. Although dining inside a restaurant may seem like a thing of the past, if Kern County makes it to the red tier, it may begin again.

“The gorge rises at it” nghĩa là gì?

“The gorge rises at it” có gorge là những cái đã ăn vào bụng -> cụm từ này nghĩa là bị nổi giận/phẫn nộ, xuất hiện trong vở kịch Hamlet của Shakespeare.

Ví dụ
The mother of a man who was killed by a Hamilton County deputy says the gorge rises at it. This week the district attorney (luật sư) announced a deputy's use of force was justified when he opened fire on her son during a traffic stop. It was the deputy's first of three shootings this year.

“Still Your Best” is battered in fluid layers of dark acoustic guitar playing, and Giveon’s heavy baritone. The gorge rises at it, the fact that a former lover has moved on with someone that he considers a downgrade (giáng cấp). He strokes his ego by expressing to her that his feelings and emotions will never belong to her again.

"Would (just) as soon (do something) as look at (one)" -> nghĩa là rất muốn/cố ý làm hại ai.

Ví dụ
Brooke Tyler Benson’s Jess is all sass and attitude. A Madonna in leather miniskirt and fishnet stockings, she would as soon shoot you as look at you. “I have a hard time keeping friends,” she confesses in a monumental understatement.

The heart of “The Finest Hours” cuts back and forth between Bernie and his crew and Sybert and his men, all desperately trying to stay alive and afloat in ferocious (dữ tợn, hung ác) waves (especially effective in the film’s 3-D version) that would as soon kill you as look at you.

That's Tommy Lee Jones as a West Texas law man unnerved by the violence around him. Josh Brolin plays a local man who comes across millions in drug money and walks off with it. Sent to recover the cash is Javier Bardem, who chills the blood as a man who quite literally would as soon kill you as look at you.

“(He’s) a criminal (tội phạm) who will stop at nothing (and) do anything to win,” De Niro told us. “We have to win it. Everybody has to join. We have to speak out and win this fight, period. We can’t let this go further. If (he gets) another four years, we’re into fascism (chủ nghĩa phát xít), American-style, period.”

“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” tells the story of Scott Pilgrim, a bass guitarist for a garage-rock band, who starts dating the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers. Sounds simple enough? Well, it is not. He has to fight an army of her seven evil exes who will stop at nothing to eliminate him from her list of suitors.

“Organizations like HMRC, which oversee the tax affairs of millions of people, are a top target for malicious hackers who will stop at nothing to steal confidential data (dữ liệu mật). “Up and at them” nghĩa là gì?

“Up and at them/up and at 'em/up and Adam” -> nghĩa là thức dậy và bắt đầu hoạt động, làm việc hoặc hòa nhập với mọi người.

Ví dụ
President Trump was up and at 'em this morning with one message on his mind that he felt the need to repeat over and over and over AND OVER again -- America, vote ... MAGA.

It seems people may have been a little lethargic (ngủ lịm, lờ phờ) and less keen to get up and at them for a morning workout. It’s clearly the case, with over 1.5m people already streaming the 30 minute workout after Joe uploaded it to YouTube – with many others heading to social media to let The Body Coach know they couldn’t tune in live but will watch it later on.

"Everything is measured and there is a lot of positivity, building players, building levels—he's working on it all the time," former Rangers centre-back Gareth McAuley, who played under Gerrard last season, told BBC Sport in January. trích dẫn hôm nay… is from near the 20-minute, 30-second mark of Russ Roberts’s splendid August 2019 EconTalk podcast with George Will; specifically, it’s Will commenting on (one of the many) figments of the distorted economic imaginations of Trumpians and Progressives (original emphasis):

And what the Trumpian Right and the Progressives want is to pull up the drawbridge (cầu bắc qua hào của một lâu đài, có thể rút lên để không cho ai qua lại; cầu kéo), raise the walls (xây tường), and somehow coerce (ép buộc) the manufacturing jobs [to] come back to the United States. We have people in the White House who talk about repatriating (hồi hương, trở về nước) our supply chains (chuỗi cung ứng). Now, these people have no clue what the supply chain of a Boeing Dreamliner looks like. Or even a much simpler gadget like an iPhone looks like. Repatriating the supply chains–trying to repatriate Boeing supply chains–would simply make Airbus the indisputable (không thể cãi, không thể bàn cãi, không thể tranh luận) winner in the commercial aviation competition (cạnh tranh hàng không thương mại).

After his wife Cloe passed away in 1992, he took up travelling and his family “didn’t see him for dust,” his daughter Kathy said. Kathy later travelled with him to his favourite haunt (nơi được nhiều người đến) at Playa de Coco in Costa Rica and on cruises to Alaska.

Dal says problems began with a bounced check from his bank and that a former business partner, someone he calls mike zap, wasn't working hard enough to make the business successful. "Ultimately I would’ve gotten rid of Mike Zap anyway because I didn’t see him for dust," said Dahele.

Faldo was the closest witness (nhân chứng) as Woods recorded that two-under-par round of 70. “He came back in 30 and that was the start,” said the six times major champion. “And then we didn’t see him for dust for about the next 12 years.”
