"Gaze at your navel" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Michal Vrba on Unsplash

"Gaze at one's navel" = nhìn chằm chằm vào rốn người ta -> nghĩa là quá bận tâm, tập trung vào vấn đề/việc cá nhân.

Ví dụ
Now, there is no time to gaze at your navel and read management textbooks before making a decision. Do you like weighing things up, seeking (tìm kiếm) advice and reading military history before making a call? Tough luck, because there is no rule book.

It’s a genre that critics love to bag on, and readers love to devour (ngấu nghiến). But we like to think that it’s not bad to write a memoir (hồi kí), it’s just very hard to write a good one. So we asked 10 of our favorite first-person authors for their best advice on the form. Get ready to take notes, gaze at your navel -- and learn from the masters.

He doesn’t gaze at his navel so much as wax poetic about it. What also distinguishes him is how he integrates (hòa nhập) crowd work. This comedy jargon (biệt ngữ) refers to the interplay comedians have with the audience.

"Listen with half an ear" nghĩa là gì?

"Listen with half an ear" = nghe một tai -> nghĩa là chỉ nghe vậy nhưng không chú ý hết.

Ví dụ
If you listen with half an ear to the Sundance buzz about Swiss Army Man, you might easily miss the admiring comments about wacko inventiveness and think it offers nothing but a farting corpse (xác chết, thi hài).

The union horror tales in Question Time have become so routine that it's possible to listen with half an ear while writing in Christmas cards, which is exactly what Tony Abbott among others was doing.

A few guides from Tortuguero National Park on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast are giving instructions: "Don't get in the way of the turtles! Watch where you step! Don't help!" The tiny animals have to find their way on their own. But many tourists only listen with half an ear - they're much too busy taking pictures and filming. "Oops!" A señora next to me has just failed to notice one of the small animals between her legs and accidentally knocked it over, but the turtle picks itself up and keeps going.

"In with a chance" nghĩa là gì?

"In with a chance" -> nghĩa là đang có cơ hội tốt/khả năng cao để hoàn thành công việc.

Ví dụ
Want to be in with a chance of winning a 50-inch television, a Racing TV membership for three years and a Zoom call with the legend that is Ruby Walsh?

The next edition of On The Ball City, for our home match against Derby County, is now available to order online with those who purchase a copy in with a chance of winning a signed programme.

For Bungay, Wigger had a fine chance in the 63rd minute, only to fire wide. With the scores level Watton were always in with a chance of snatching the points, and hooked one chance wide with six minutes left.

"Hum with activity" nghĩa là gì?

"Hum with activity" có hum là tiếng ồn -> cụm từ này chỉ nơi ồn ào, tấp nập và nhộn nhịp.

Ví dụ
When everything that can be done has been done, a big rain or spring melt, will be the test. Until it passes the test, the basement renovation cannot be completed and the upper story work won’t start. Meanwhile, upstairs, the library continues to be the place to find a new book to read, while the computers hum with activity.

Across the country, office lights will be turned on and windows thrown open. Work clothes and school uniforms will be pulled out of the wardrobe. Shops and factories (nhà máy) will start to hum with activity. As we enter this new phase, things will change. Businesses will need to become Covid secure to protect staff and customers. We will all need to stay alert as we go about our daily lives.

Hobbled by a shortage of workers, companies are finding it hard to resume operations at an optimal scale and with migrants (người di cư) moving back home, it could be a while before factories hum with activity. Companies are also grappling with a disruption in the supply chain, unable to source key inputs and components. Indeed, production levels are likely to stay relatively low until there are enough workers and also until retail sales outlets are re-opened.

"Knock over with a feather" nghĩa là gì?

"Knock (one) over with a feather" = quật ngã chỉ bằng một sợi lông -> nghĩa là làm ai rất ngạc nhiên/sảng hồn đến nỗi té/ngã ngửa ra.

Ví dụ
Well, knock me over with a feather. Studies from countries including the U.K., Australia, Switzerland, Canada, Netherlands, France, Ireland, Taiwan, and Iceland have all failed to find meaningful spread from school-age children. Sweden kept the younger grades open throughout the entire pandemic and didn't experience a single death. The Public Health Agency of Sweden found no measurable difference in outcomes for children between Sweden and Finland, even though Finland closed its schools.

You could knock her over with a feather—literally! Ariana Grande told her Instagram follower that she had a "magical" time performing "Bang Bang" at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in London Tuesday. During Grande's set, however, she was nearly taken down by model Elsa Hosk's angel wings. The terrified look on the 21-year-old pop star's face says it all!

You’ve heard President Trump and his unemployable sons complaining for months that mail-in voting would lead to widespread voter fraud (gian lận, lừa đảo). And now that Governor Newsom has ordered mail-in ballots be sent to every registered voter in the state, allow us to knock you over with a feather with the news that the California Republican party has been caught doing the voter fraud, putting out illegal and unauthorized ballot boxes as SFGate reports. That article picks up on an Orange County Register exposé on a California Republican Party operative posting a fake ballot box on social media, but reporting from other areas of the state has found more unauthorized GOP-owned ballot boxes in other parts of California.

"Lend a hand with" nghĩa là gì?

"Lend (one) a hand with (something)" = cho ai mượn một tay -> nghĩa là trợ giúp ai.

Ví dụ
But if Dad is stubborn (bướng, cứng đầu) and wants you to embrace the beard, you might as well lend him a hand with products to help him tame it. This kit comes with a beard brush, a beard wash and a beard control cream.

At the time Jesse their daughter — now activist and musician in her own right — was only seven, and Jackson their eldest son was only 12 — now accomplished guitarist and ex-husband of Meg White —. Patti’s brother Todd volunteered to move in with the family to lend her a hand with raising the children but unexpectedly died just a few weeks later of a stroke.

I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to thank the people who have supported and encouraged me in my efforts to serve the community that I love. In particular, I would like to thank my wife, children, parents, legislative aides, campaign volunteers and donors. I would also like to thank the people of Barnstable and Yarmouth who have supported me in the past, from those who invited me into their homes to share their concerns and express their hopes for our community, to those who reached out to lend me a hand with my campaigns and those who contributed to my success in large and small ways. Finally, I would like to thank my legislative colleagues, including every current and past member of the Cape and Islands legislative delegation.

"Learn to live with" nghĩa là gì?

"Learn to live with" -> nghĩa là học cách sống/quen với mọi điều trong cuộc sống, đặc biệt những điều không tốt đẹp, không mong muốn và cả sự khó khăn.

Ví dụ
“If you are going to be the coach of the Super Eagles, then you have to bring success and if you don’t have it, don’t sit down because people will come at you and Rohr must learn to live with it.”

As we move into the last quarter of 2020, the virus that has defined this troubled year is showing no signs of going away. In the absence of a vaccine or a broadly effective treatment, some are now saying that we must learn to live with COVID-19. But what does that actually look like?

Pubs and restaurants are closed — those that were still in business. Everyone is back in their masks. There’s a run on hand sanitiser and bog paper. Sound familiar? You bet. And you can pencil in the same scenario for 2022 (apart from England winning the Euros, obvs) . . . and 2023 and beyond. It’s another Groundhog Day in a battle we cannot ever win. Until we learn to live with this virus.

"Lead with his chin" nghĩa là gì?

"Lead with (one's) chin" -> nghĩa là ăn nói hung hăng, liều lĩnh hành động mà không thận trọng.

Ví dụ
But Turner doesn't appear ready to lead with her chin. Her voicemail message may end with "Be blessed," but will that be her tone during the campaign? She has conferred with well-known Democratic political strategist Gerald Austin, known for his take-no-prisoners style. He described his help as "free advice."

But perhaps he won’t. Perhaps Cummings will lead with his chin again at some point in the months ahead and suffer a knock-out blow as a result (much more likely according to the Mandelson precedent). In which case the lobby and his many detractors will get their pound of flesh but, again, the electoral fundamentals will not be much changed.

"Laura's instinct is to lead with her chin, and push things from a purely partisan standpoint, that I think will ultimately help Culberson,” said a Democratic strategist based in Texas. “That’s a highly educated district with a lot of thoughtful voters who are willing to step away from party, but you have to give them a reason to do it. But if you play to type, then so will the voters, which is defaulting to Republicans."

"Lay it on with a trowel" nghĩa là gì?

"Lay it on thick/with a trowel" có trowel là cái bay -> cụm từ này nghĩa là phóng đại; thổi phồng, tán dương hết lời; quan trọng hóa vấn đề; phản ứng thái quá.

Ví dụ
President Donald Trump appears to belong to what might be called the Benjamin Disraeli school of diplomacy. The British prime minister once counseled, “Everyone likes flattery; and when you come to Royalty you should lay it on with a trowel.”

Every country and every leader tried to work out how to deal with Trump. Elaborate psychological (thuộc tâm lý) analyses were written in foreign capitals (tư bản nước ngoài)– including our own. The general conclusion was that Trump was a narcissist (ái kỷ) who’d respond well to flattery (tâng bốc, xu nịnh). ‘Lay it on with a trowel’ was the consensus (sự đồng tâm/nhất trí), echoing former British PM Benjamin Disraeli’s advice on how to deal with royalty.

His great trick is that, unlike the Leichner makeup he favoured as a young man, he does not lay it on with a trowel. When he undercuts his sincerity – tenderness (tính mềm yếu, mỏng manh) is always hotly pursued by a barb – it only serves to make his narrative the more heartfelt. (“Syphilis (bệnh giang mai) probably, but at the thrilling stage,” he notes, finally, of a moment when, about to go on stage as Wilde in a production of David Hare’s play The Judas Kiss, he suddenly has the sense that “the whole universe has stopped in its tracks”.)

"How's with you?" nghĩa là gì?

"How's (it) with you?" -> đây là một câu chào hỏi/hỏi thăm sức khỏe như "how are you?".

Ví dụ
"What's up?" he asked WFAA's Kevin Reece on the computer attached to his wheelchair that allows him to compose words and sentences with the movement of his eyes.
"How 's with you?" he asked.
"I'm fine, how's with you?" Reece answered.

Places and Spaces I've Been unfolds over a series of revealing conversations. Jay-Z and Pharrell discuss music, beginning with memories of grunge and extending to minutia related to some of the former's most memorable bars. Pharrell also chats with N.E.R.D band mates Chad Hugo and Shae Haley, BAPE founder Nigo, Kanye West, and the aforementioned (đã nói ở trên) Buzz Aldrin. Buzz opens dialogue (cuộc đối thoại) with a simple, "How's it with you, bro?"

From stay-at-home orders to physical distancing, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact (ảnh hưởng/tác động sâu sắc) on Americans’ well-being. Physicians and other health professionals on the front lines of care also have felt the personal impact of this pandemic. To bring physician well-being in focus during these unprecedented times, AMA member Lanny F. Wilson, MD, has found that the simple act of asking, “How's with you?” can help.

"Down with the haps" nghĩa là gì?

"Down with the haps" có hap là sự may mắn, việc ngẫu nhiên/tình cờ -> nghĩa là biết điều đang xảy ra; thoải mái với điều đang diễn ra.

Ví dụ
For a young man leaving Alabama and not downing with the haps, it was a little scary.

“There’s a few jokes about it every now and then, but that’s probably a reflection of the group, no one’s pressuring him into anything or downing with the haps.”

“I think we owe it not only to the Marshalls but to the other islands of the Pacific to be sure we down with the haps, and, if we’re not comfortable with it, to determine what exactly we need to do to secure that waste.”

"Down with his apple-cart" nghĩa là gì?

"Down with his apple-cart" = lật đổ xe táo của anh ta xuống -> nghĩa là đẩy/hạ gục anh ta xuống đất, apple-cart trước đây được dùng như là từ lóng chỉ cơ thể con người.

Ví dụ
“He began to struggle with the officers, become combative (hiếu chiến, thích gây gỗ), didn’t want to be removed from the car,” added Green. “They force him out of the vehicle. He’s still resisting. They down with his apple-cart.”

“If you’ve watched any Aaron Donald football games, he jumps on the quarterbacks’ backs a lot,” Mitchell said. “He does it over and over again. I don’t think Aaron Donald did that to try and do anything wrong to Alex Smith. Aaron Donald, that is what he does. The second time when he grabbed him, the whistle was blown so quick that he just held him up — he didn’t down with his apple-cart.”

Thirteen hours later, and 1,200 miles away, at a Minneapolis convenience store called Cup Foods, George Floyd, forty-four, paid for a packet of cigarettes with a $20 note. An employee called the police to tell them she suspected the note was counterfeit (giả mạo). The police came seven minutes later to arrest Floyd. Over the next twenty minutes, they would pull their gun on him, pull him out of his car, and down with his apple-cart. Police officer Derek Chauvin, forty-four, would then place his knee on Floyd’s neck for over eight minutes. Floyd died. Chauvin is white; Floyd was black.

"Dispense with the formalities" nghĩa là gì?

"Dispense with the formalities" -> nghĩa là miễn lễ, bỏ qua các nghi thức hoặc chuẩn mực xã hội vì vấn đề quan trọng hơn đã nắm chắc trong tay rồi.

Ví dụ
A bid to open a world-leading tourist attraction in the borough centred around the hit TV phenomenon Game of Thrones will pass its final hurdle (chướng ngại) next week. Both will go to a sitting of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council’s planning committee, where councillors will be eager to dispense with the formalities and propel the process forward. The two applications will be rubber-stamped; one pertains to the actual state-of-the-art attraction and all it entails, while the other is for the development of a separate park and ride facility at a different location, to enable the hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to be ferried to the site.

Cummings, of course, denies ever making the statement, calling the claim “defamatory (nói xấu, phỉ báng).” But let’s dispense with the formalities. Does anybody really – really – believe that that wasn’t the first thought of Cummings and half the cabinet when confronted with an imminent contagion (sự lây, ảnh hưởng xấu) they understood was about to unravel a social and economic theory they have dedicated their entire political careers to turning into a mass cult? An economic theory from which — by happy coincidence — they derive their political power and class privilege.

South Fulton, Georgia Councilman khalid kamau prefers to be introduced simply as “Councilman khalid.” He wants to dispense with the formalities, and with all the barriers that are erected between elected officials and the people they serve. The veteran activist, who is in his second year as a young councilman, thinks a lot about how to change our politics and our governance. He examines and reexamines issues and social relations at every level—starting with his lower-case name, which he explains on his official website “comes from the Yoruba tradition where the community is emphasized over the individual.”

"Below the breadline" nghĩa là gì?

"Below the breadline" có breadline là người thất nghiệp đang chờ tiếp tế -> cụm từ này nghĩa là rất khó khăn, nghèo khó.

Ví dụ
The number of children living in poverty across the region has gone up. Now, around a third of all children across the North West are living below the breadline, according to new figures from Loughborough University commissioned by the End Child Poverty coalition (liên minh).

Last year, the Post told how more than 5,000 children in South Ayrshire were already living in poverty – with a staggering (kinh ngạc) 37 per cent of children in the Ayr North ward living in a household operating below the breadline.

Thanet still has the highest rates (tỉ lệ) of child poverty in Kent – with almost a quarter of the isle’s youngsters deemed to be living below the breadline.

Overall, 14.4 million people in the UK were living in poverty in 2018-19, up by 100,000 on the previous year, of which 4.5 million were children. About 4.5 million people – 7% of the population – were in deep poverty, and 7.1 million people (11%) were in persistent (bền bỉ) poverty, meaning they had lived below the breadline for at least two of the last three years.

"The nanny state" nghĩa là gì?

"The nanny state" = nhà nước vú em -> nghĩa là chính sách của chính phủ can thiệp, theo dõi quá mức vào đời tư của mọi người, được cho là không an toàn.

Ví dụ
Opinion: The nanny state is well and truly in charge now. Hard cases, they say, make bad law. Another week has passed and sport followers across the land remain locked out from seeing their teams play. Players can go to battle in full-contact matches on football, soccer and rugby fields as much as they like; that is safe, we are told.

The nanny state — a cliché (câu rập khuôn) much used by Boris Johnson in his days as a journalist — is in danger of killing us with kindness. The yawning absence of human contact has, for many, robbed life of its meaning.

Philip Davies was fed up (chán nản) with the nanny state and thought people should be allowed to choose to get coronavirus or not, and the ever more self-parodic Desmond Swayne reckoned pubs (quán rượu) should be allowed to determine their own opening hours.

From the moment COVID-19 arrived on U.S. soil (đất), conservative Christian men across the country rose up to sound the alarm to their fellow Americans. In their view, the real threat wasn’t the virus, but the nanny state’s response to it. The government, they argued, would use the virus as an excuse to get what they’ve always wanted — control.

“Fall about with laughter” nghĩa là gì?

“Fall about with laughter” có fall about là cười nhiều -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cười không kiểm soát/quá nhiều.

Ví dụ
What is it about Morecambe and Wise that means we still fall about with laughter at their antics (trò hề, người khôi hài), decades after they first dazzled the nation? "I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve analysed and try to answer that question myself," admits Gary.

'It was grapefruit (nho) baked in the Aga, with a cherry on the top, and then for the second course, a tuna bake which was tinned tuna, Campbells condensed mushroom (nấm) soup, spaghetti and a topping of potato crisps…' We fall about with laughter as I confess with shame to instantly recognising that dish and worse, continuing to make it myself. Summer Pudding was another of Alison's mother's favourites, made with the newly introduced sliced bread, 'terrible soggy bread but my parents' generation was entranced with it.'

“I became a sort of standup comic when my wife was awarded $20 million in the divorce, because it was the safest and most reliable way of earning money,” he says over the phone from Toronto, referring to his very public breakup from third spouse Alyce Cleese in 2008. (He’s now married to English jewellery (trang sức) designer and former model Jennifer Wade.) “I got to like it because there’s something very real about being out there on-stage, standing in front of lots and lots of people and making them laugh. If I can go out and make people fall about with laughter, I go back to have a glass of wine in a very happy mood.”
