"Keep your pants on" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng lo! Nó không cắn đâu :D. Photo courtesy: norman scobbie

"Keep one's pants/shirt on" = giữ lấy cái quần/áo -> nghĩa là bình tĩnh, không nên tức giận hay mất kiên nhẫn.

Ví dụ
"I know at the time (Eddie) was a bit uncertain as well, but then the next day when we all came together to talk about it, it was like keep up the good work, don't do that again, but keep having fun on the TV and Sam keep your pants on.

She later told Carla what happened and how she has realised she is better off without him, which caused Carla to storm over to Adam's and call him out on his behaviour, branding him a "rotting chimp-man who can't keep his pants on".

Just keep your shirt on – the old monument will be gone soon enough. Then, I suppose, the air will be a little fresher, the birds will chirp a little sweeter, the lion will lay down with the lamb, and, oh, those ballyhooed (rùm beng) free food giveaways can begin again, in earnest (sốt sắng; tha thiết), on the town square.

"This is why we can't have nice things" nghĩa là gì?

"This is why we can't have nice things" = đây là lí do tại sao chúng ta không thể có những điều tốt đẹp -> câu đổ lỗi cho ai hoặc một nhóm vì hành động họ gây ra hỏng hóc, hư hỏng cho điều gì có giá trị.

Ví dụ
Calvin Singleton wrote: "This is why we can't have nice things." But others argued that both images are "acts of graffiti no matter who has done them". Liam Masey said: "So someone has graffitied a wall, the council try preserve (bảo tồn) it and then there's an uproar that someone else has graffitied the same wall. Both the same act despite who did either."

A young woman had climbed onto a hatchling (mới nở) that was emerging from its egg, and was seen gleefully (vui sướng) rocking the exhibit and posing for the camera. After her antics were shared on TikTok and later reposted on Facebook on Thursday (Oct 15), netizens called the visitor out on her inconsiderate behaviour. Several of them asked whether visitors are allowed to ride on the dinosaurs while others lamented "This is why we can't have nice things."

A glaring example occurred early on when a “wfh happy hour” between VC Hunter Walk and journalist (nhà báo) Casey Newton got Zoombombed. Chipotle also had to shut down a public Zoom chat when one of the attendees pushed porn (đồi trụy) to hundreds of participants, according to a New York Times report. This is why we can’t have nice things, even while working during quarantine.

BBC Radio 2 listeners have voted U2’s ‘The Joshua Tree’ the greatest album of the 1980s. This is why we can’t have nice things. The poll was announced to coincide (trùng với) with National Album Day, which was on Saturday. Did you listen to lots of albums? Did you listen to ‘The Joshua Tree’? Did you do either of those things remembering that Saturday was National Album Day?

"Like a chicken with the pip" nghĩa là gì?

"Like a chicken with the pip" = như gà bị ứ đờm -> nghĩa là rất yếu ớt/yếu đuối, mệt mỏi và u sầu.

Ví dụ
“This morning, I went to Lahad Datu Airport and I saw a man sitting on the side of the road like a chicken with the pip while surrounded by airport staff.

A six-year-old Eastern Cape boy who was reported missing on Monday has been found alive and unhurt but like a chicken with the pip , police said on Saturday.

Ndhlovu went on to say that he was hustling for a job at Kiss FM then but things weren’t just falling in place. He said this left him like a chicken with the pip but he kept asking God to come through for him.

"Play kissy-kissy with" nghĩa là gì?

"Play kissy-kissy with" -> nghĩa là hôn ai đắm đuối nơi công cộng; hoặc bợ đỡ/nịnh hót ai để có được sự cảm tình của người ta.

Ví dụ
“It’s really the only time my husband and I will be openly demonstrative, where we might hold hands and play kissy-kissy with each other,” he said.

On New Year’s Eve 2008, they ended up having their first kiss as they watched the ball drop in Times Square. “We were in front of people, and he’s not a big PDA guy,” the musician told Glamour in an interview. “I figured, I’ll go in for it because he can’t leave me hanging, right? So I made him play kissy-kissy with me.” Mike enjoyed that kiss so much, he asked Carrie to marry him the following year.

The film’s protagonist (vai chính), Damien Booster (Aaron Burt) shares that fear, but doesn’t seem to be quite ready to acknowledge that to himself or his charming girlfriend Danielle (Emily Pearse). After seven months of dating, Danielle’s ready to say those three fateful words. Damien, who won’t even play kissy-kissy with her, does everything he can to avoid the subject. An unrequited “I love you” is dangerous territory for any relationship, but his noncommittal (không hứa hẹn/cam kết) response to meeting her mother is enough to drive a heartbroken Dani to leave.

"Your mother wears army boots" nghĩa là gì?

"Your mother wears army boots" = mẹ mày xỏ giày lính -> như câu chửi "mẹ mày là con điếm"; trong Thế Chiến II, gái điếm đi theo các đoàn binh sĩ, và đôi khi đi giày lính.

Ví dụ
Gone are the days when “your mother wears Army boots” was a familiar playground taunt (lời trêu chọc). Today having a military mom is a badge of honor (vinh dự). Just ask former Miss Rhode Island Alexandra Curtis, who is now 2nd Lt. Alexandra Curtis and tromping through Fort Sill’s muddy West Range for the culminating training exercise of Field Artillery (FA) Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC) Class 3-20.

When I was in elementary school (admittedly a good many years ago), the most stinging (nhức nhói) taunt one could fling against another classmate went: “Aww, your mother wears Army boots!”

When I was a kid, the taunt “Your mother wears Army boots” had not yet gone completely out of fashion. But the razz (trêu trọc) packed no punch for me. I could respond, “Actually she wears Marine Corps boots, and she will beat the hell out of your mother.”

"All the worse for wear" nghĩa là gì?

"All the worse for wear" -> nghĩa là hỏng hóc, xuống cấp trong quá trình sử dụng, cũng dùng để miêu tả ai đó sau quãng thời gian chịu đựng khó khăn về tinh thần hoặc thể xác.

Ví dụ
As captain, Robbo organised (tổ chức) the parties more or less. He sorted one out where we were going to a comedy club in Oldham, then onto a party in Haydock. We all piled on to the club coach – a beautiful coach – there were beers had and we were soon all the worse for wear. There’s a bridge that you’ve got to go over to reach the club and Derek, the driver, says to Bryan: “I’m not going to get the coach over the bridge, Bryan. It won’t fit (vừa vặn).”

She watches as someone in a parka finds her secret door and enters. As the man descends down the stairs she clocks him with the butt of her rifle. But it's Simon, looking all the worse for wear after two years of walking through the zombie apocalypse (tàn lụi) to get back to his family. In an incredibly cute moment, Kaya introduces their toddler (con nhỏ) JZ, aka Junior Z, to his daddy.

The Port of Galilee is an economic engine for Rhode Island, bringing in $66 million in seafood last year and supporting 200 commercial fishermen and other businesses in the fishing industry. But Rhode Island’s largest fishing port has been looking the worse for wear for a long time now. Bulkheads are rotting (mục nát), piers are sagging (lún) and asphalt is crumbling (vỡ vụn).

She was feeling and looking the worse for wear after her boozy (say sưa) night out and wanted to go to sleep to recover. She wasn’t happy they didn’t vacate the room quickly enough for her so she went to the en-suite shouting and punched the mirror.

"Raise hob with" nghĩa là gì?

"Raise hob with" có hob là viết tắt của từ hobgoblin (yêu quái, quỷ) -> cụm từ này nghĩa là làm gián đoạn/phá hoại.

Ví dụ
The company says it is ready to resume 1,000 daily flights from Wednesday, July 1. However, an ongoing dispute with the pilot's union could raise hob with some reports that Ryanair is considering cutting flights or operational support services from Dublin and Cork unless union members back down.

Michele Chilcott, headteacher at South Wilts Grammar School, said: “We have written to all parents and carers to explain the situation. I am really grateful to them for their understanding and support as we know this will raise hob with these families. The safety of everyone within our school community is the most important thing and we will continue to work with Wiltshire Council and Public Health England to ensure this is managed closely so that the rest of the school can continue.

Hurts was able to raise hob with his legs, too, but that production also saw a decline over the last two months of the season. During September and October Hurts managed 7.8 yards per carry and a touchdown once every eight rushing attempts. In November and December he averaged just 3.9 yards per carry and a touchdown once every 23 attempts. Hurts also had a career high eight fumbles this year, double his total from the past two seasons.

"Jump ship" nghĩa là gì?

"Jump ship" = nhảy tàu -> nghĩa là bỏ việc hoặc trách nhiệm, nhiệm vụ được giao, đặc biệt là để làm ở một nơi khác.

Ví dụ
Executives (giám đốc cấp cao) often find it hard to jump ship after helping steer the same workplace for years.

Providing the UK doesn’t jump ship and agrees on a final round of talks, there will be several more weeks of negotiations before it becomes completely clear in what manner the UK is headed out of bloc.

The Nintendo 64 is a console which tends to divide gamers. Launching back in 1996 (or 1997 in PAL regions) as the gaming industry's bread-and-butter (cơ bản) switched from sprites (hình sprit) to polygons, the console represents — from a certain perspective — the first time Nintendo really dropped the ball (phạm sai lầm). Tired of the platform holder's licencing terms, many developers jumped ship to Sony's PlayStation, attracted by fairer deals and cheaper disc-based media. In the meantime, Nintendo doubled down on an esoteric (bí truyền) piece of hardware with confusing, kiddy-coloured controllers that were arguably out of step with gaming's maturing audience.

Thấy tui đeo kính thế nào? Photo courtesy: hippybob123

"Make a pig's ear of" -> nghĩa là làm việc rất tệ, dở, sai hoặc vụng về; phá hỏng.

Ví dụ
Involvement in such a high stakes (nhiều rủi ro) game is a new experience for Jones’ men, but the Longton captain is confident they won’t make a pig’s ear of matters.

Only could Newcastle United with the current owner and this Head Coach, make a pig’s ear of signing two free transfers (including a goalkeeper we didn’t need) while extending the contract of a striker that doesn’t score and rehiring a player that had actually left the club.

SNP and LibDem MPs also asked about communication with the Scottish Government and why Nicola Sturgeon had not been told about the change to the 'Stay at Home' message on Sunday. Pete Wishart, long-serving SNP MP, said the government had made a "pig's ear" of the message.

"Ravished with delight" nghĩa là gì?

"Ravished with delight" -> cụm từ cổ này nghĩa là vui sướng/mê thích cực kỳ.

Ví dụ
Talking about the content, the actor revealed that web series will focus on the younger audience and will be bolder and fresher than TV. This news is definitely going to make their fans ravished with delight. Ram and Sakshi were last seen together on a hit TV show ‘Bade Achche Lagte Hain’. The show became popular and ran for three years making Ram and Priya household names.

The coinage 'Altruistic Capital' caught my attention as soon as I came across it while scanning through my mails. I operate an NGO that is enabling enterprising youths and women in Africa to set up small scale enterprises. Recently, I have encountered two newly employed salaried workers in our team with an incredible deposit of what could be best described as 'Altruistic Capital'. Ravished with delight by their extra commitment to service which even financial reward cannot afford, I eagerly desire a means of recruiting more of these class of employee to work in a newly built Table water factory. Evidently, high productivity is guaranteed with a workforce lavished with 'Altruistic Capital'. Now I got a clear insight and direction. Thank you Nava Ashraf for your inspiring work.

"Pay with the roll of the drum" nghĩa là gì?

"Pay with the roll of the drum" -> nghĩa là trốn nợ.

Ví dụ
Justice, the richest person in the state, owns a complex business empire of coal and agricultural entities that are perennially mired in litigation, often over unpaid bills. The farming company is no different. It is named in a long-running lawsuit that alleges the Justice businesses transferred assets between them in an effort to pay with the roll of the drum.

Detectives later learned Thomas had a dispute with Crouse’s son, who Thomas believed left town to pay with the roll of the drum. State police pulled Thomas over 11 days after the shooting and arrested him with a loaded gun that matched the type of gun used in the shooting.

A Mareva injunction (lệnh huấn thị, lệnh của tòa) is a temporary injunction awarded by the court to freeze someone’s assets (phong tỏa tài sản), preventing them from disposing of them to pay with the roll of the drum. You can ask the courts in the Bahamas to grant an injunction under s2(1) Supreme Court Act 1996 where it appears to the court to be just and convenient to do so.

"Part brass rags with" nghĩa là gì?

"Part brass rags with" = cắt đứt giẻ lau -> nghĩa là kết thúc/chấm dứt quan hệ với ai.

Ví dụ
Buffalo Bills open search for new stadium naming rights partner, will part brass rags with New Era.

Varinder Kumar, son of Raj Kumar, a resident of Piplanwala village, in his complaint to the Model Town police said his brother Ajay Kumar (21) had told him that he had an affair with a girl of the village. Devi Kamal, mother of the girl, called the victim to her residence and threatened to part brass rags with her daughter. He said the victim was beaten up but somehow escaped from there. Later, Ajay consumed poison (thuốc độc). He was rushed to the hospital where he died.

Bigg Boss 13 is known as much for its relationships as it is for its controversies, in fact it is hard to tell both apart many a times. Paras Chhabra’s budding romance with Shehnaaz seems to be a case in point. A day after his girlfriend Akanksha Puri laughed off Shehnaaz Gill and Mahira Sharma’s face-off over him, he has said on camera that he tried to part brass rags with Akanksha many times but couldn’t as she would end up in tears.

"A cure worse than the disease" nghĩa là gì?

"A cure worse than the disease" =  phương thuốc còn tệ hơn căn bệnh -> nghĩa là phương án giải quyết vấn đề/khủng hoảng dẫn tới kết quả còn tồi tệ hơn ban đầu.

Ví dụ
“The solution to the current mess in Philhealth is to thoroughly investigate (điều tra) allegations of massive and systemic corruption and hold both the appointees and the appointing powers accountable,” Nagkaisa chairperson Sonny Matula said in a statement. The group also believes that privatizing (tư nhân hóa) healthcare is a “cure worse than the disease.”

Just as significantly, let us beware of a cure worse than the disease. It is tempting, seeing liberal democracy at its nadir (điểm thấp nhất), to heed an attempt at rescue from big business. Perhaps, in recommitting themselves to all their stakeholders, we might hope that the Business Roundtable will save America from angry, underpaid crowds.

At this point, one does have to ask the question: Is the lockdown a cure worse than the disease? This question is by no means (hoàn toàn không) unique to India. Throughout the advanced nations of the West, and within sub-national jurisdictions (quyền thực thi pháp lý) in federal states such as the US and Canada, political leaders and ordinary folks are asking whether the damage to the economy, to livelihoods, to the social fabric, even to mental health, is worth the putative (được cho là) gains of the lockdown in terms of containing the spread of the virus and “flattening the curve".

Don’t misunderstand me — I am not here to perpetuate (duy trì) the sentiment (quan điểm) that the shelter-in-place is a “cure worse than the disease.” I believe we can effectively stem coronavirus cases with physical distancing, but we can also do more for our children. Much in the way that we prepared for the surge in COVID patients, we need to prepare for the surge of patients stressed and strained by this virus.
