"As busy as Grand Central Station" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jay Clark on Unsplash

"As busy as Grand Central Station" -> nghĩa là rất tấp nập/hỗn loạn, như Nhà Ga Trung Tâm ở New York vậy.

Ví dụ
"'This place is as busy as Grand Central Station'; what other building do we use that same simile (so sánh) for? When you talk about the fact that there was a radio station here, every Saturday people longed to listen to [it] because they had these romantic (lãng mạn) tales of New York City," Roberts said. "That films were made here - 'North by Northwest.'"

Comparing (so sánh) a place to Pitt Street is an Australian way of saying it’s as busy as Grand Central Station, so be prepared for the crowds if you visit the Central Business District (CBD) on weekends or evenings.

More almost-comic frustrations mark Gillis' "Long Journey Across a Short Street", directed by Richard C. Sarafian, in which a closed dress shop suddenly (bỗng dưng) becomes as busy as Grand Central Station while Jericho tries to dig a tunnel (hầm).

The entrance hall at Holy Angels Academy looked as busy as Grand Central Station at rush hour (giờ tan tầm) on Sunday. Parents crowded around an information table and picked up information packets, while Principal Rosemarie McGoldrick talked to people individually about why they should enroll (đăng ký học) their children in her school. Nearby, students were organizing groups to take tours of the building.

"Ripe for the picking" nghĩa là gì?

"Ripe for the picking" = đủ chín để gặt hái -> nghĩa là ở vị trí lý tưởng hay giai đoạn hoàn hảo để tận dụng, khai thác, kiếm lời.

Ví dụ
Florida may be ripe for the picking, computer scientists say, because numerous (vô vàn) counties rely on voting machines that are drawing fire for their vulnerability to a cyberattack (tấn công mạng).

Bank of America shares 12 under-owned stocks likely to soar (vụt lên) on earnings this quarter with investing conditions ripe for the picking.

While HBO's recent Perry Mason reboot (khởi động lại) brought with it a good amount of prestige (uy thế) thanks to a high profile cast and creative team, it's far from the first classic series reboot to find its way to TV screens in the Peak TV era. CBS alone has made a cottage industry out of rebooting their classic properties, from S.W.A.T., Hawaii Five-O, Magnum P.I. and MacGyver to its upcoming Equalizer reboot. To wit, it's become increasingly clear that not every beloved show of the past should be brought back to life. Here are ten that we think are ripe for the picking.

While BlackBerry may not be ripe for the picking today, as the company continues to recover (hồi phục) from a brutal pandemic-plagued first half of the year, the patience of investors with the conviction and discipline (kỉ luật) to ignore medium-term stock price moves could stand to be profoundly rewarded at some point over the next three to five years.

“He who excuses himself, accuses himself” nghĩa là gì?

“He who excuses himself, accuses himself” -> nghĩa là có tật giật mình.

Ví dụ
There's a Latin saying that pretty much sums this one up: "Excusatio non petita accusatio manifesta." It roughly translates to "he who excuses himself, accuses himself." Don't rely on excuses to justify your incompetence (sự kém cỏi, bất tài).

”He who excuses himself, accuses himself”. Mark Rebel said: “Success occurs when your dreams get bigger than your excuses.” If you are an entrepreneur, realise that people don’t pay for excuses; people pay for services. You can make excuses or you can make progress, the choice is yours. Once you realise that you are the only one holding yourself back, you’ll stop making excuses and you will start making changes. Nobody owes you anything; you will have to earn it. There are no failures in life, only excuses. My fellow Nigerians, let’s ask not what the country can do for us, let’s ask what we can do for our country!

This orgy (cuộc chè chén trác táng) of recrimination (sự tố cáo/buộc tội lẫn nhau) is patently insincere. Does anyone believe these people, or imagine that their contrition is real? Of course not. Qui s’accuse, s’excuse, the French say: who accuses oneself, excuses oneself. The whole rigamarole (sự kể lể dông dài, luyên thiên) is a self-justifying performance by whites for an audience of likeminded other whites: beatified souls who have achieved a state of grace. They stand in opposition to bad whites, who refuse to apologize for their privilege.

“Other times other ways” nghĩa là gì?

“Other times other ways” -> nghĩa là mỗi thời mỗi cách.

Ví dụ
Sample this: Brezhnev pleading with Indira Gandhi, “I want to get out of Afghanistan. Please show me the way.” And Indira tartly responding, “The way out is the same as the way in”! Or of Nehru’s PMO in 1957 calling Rasgotra, then a junior officer at our mission to the UN, to convey Nehru’s specific instruction that Rasgotra “personally” take “special care of a young man of great leadership potential” — one Atal Behari Vajpayee, just elected for the first time to the Lok Sabha. Autres temps, autres moeurs. (Other times, other ways)

"You can become a better leader by reading," said author James Stavridis. "It exposes you to other situations, other places, other times, other ways people have chosen to exercise leadership." Stavridis — a retired United States Navy admiral and current dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University — worked with his co-author, R. Manning Ancell, to survey more than 200 four-star military generals about what they read and have read.

“What will be will be” nghĩa là gì?

“What will be will be” -> nghĩa là chuyện gì đến rồi cũng sẽ đến.

Ví dụ
“I think I showed my TT legs in the last TT,” Geoghegan Hart said atop Sestriere. “We’ll see what happens tomorrow, we’ll give everything and what will be will be.”

“What will be will be. I know we’ve done the best we could. It’s time to stop blaming. The virus is out there in the world and we just have to get on with it. I don’t have much more to say on that matter to be honest.”

Speaking to The Sun's Fabulous magazine on Sunday, she said of her romantic endeavours: 'I've been on a few dates, but I'm not putting pressure on it or looking to settle down. I have just surrendered with my love life and what will be will be.'

“So many men, so many minds” nghĩa là gì?

“So many men, so many minds” = chín người mười ý” -> nghĩa là cuộc sống rất muôn hình vạn trạng; mỗi người đều có một ý nghĩ riêng.

Ví dụ
"So many men, so many minds. So many political parties, so many discontented or, on the contrary, positive assessments. How can we speak without a clear defined criterion that this was more transparent (rõ ràng) and that was less transparent or non-transparent at all?" Zakharova added.

Franklin made his first principle the diversity of human opinion, citing an ancient adage, “So many Men, so many Minds.” Most of what is printed, he argued, concerns an opinion, by nature subject to disagreement. This fact makes the purveyor of opinion subject to a particular “Unhappiness” not experienced by “the Smith, the Shoemaker, the Carpenter, or the Man of any other Trade,” who can do business with people of all viewpoints without offending any of them.

The title of María Manda’s new exhibit, ‘So many men, so many minds’, comes from a famous Tolstoy quote, so be sure to tell your date that when you go to this watercolour and drawing exhibit. You’ll be sure to seem super knowledgeable. If you’re too lazy to google it, here’s the full quote: “If so many men, so many minds, certainly so many hearts, so many kinds of love.” The exhibit features pieces that often started as simple sketches, and then evolved into something completely different on canvas, where María Manda projects her ideas of alter egos (người bạn ruột, người thay thế tôi hoàn toàn), thoughts and dreams. This is her second private art exhibition (triển lãm nghệ thuật). We think Tolstoy would approve.

“Speak one way and act another” nghĩa là gì?

“Speak one way and act another” -> nghĩa là nói một đằng làm một nẻo.

Ví dụ
All I want to say is, what happened to someone who wants everyone to be KIND, then turn around and act and talk this way. What happened to KINDNESS?????????? Speak one way and act another, so sad.

“Talk is cheap.” “Actions speak louder than words.” “You have to be willing to put your money where your mouth is.” “You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?” Phrases like these remind us that people nowadays are keenly aware of hypocrisy. They can smell it a mile away and love to point it out. If you consistently speak one way and act another, you won’t fool people for very long. You’ll be called out for the fraud that you are.

"It deepens the distrust between students and administrators when they speak one way and act another, and this is an example," said Eric Holmberg, student body president. "It is hypocritical in the sense that the university is more fearful of challenge and discomfort than any student I know."

“You get what you pay for” nghĩa là gì?

“You get what you pay for” -> nghĩa là tiền nào của nấy.

Ví dụ
You do realize that the sayings “you can’t buy love,” “you get what you pay for” and “you lose them how you find them” are all trite for the same reason: because they’re true!

For those prices, one would hope you get what you pay for. And GM is was intent on convincing the cashed-up crowd that fell for the original Hummer that an all-electric version is not just an alternative, but a superior option.

While there are really great affordable skincare brands on the market, sometimes you get what you pay for, which is why La Mer products can cost you upwards of thousands of dollars. But, if you’ve ever dreamed of seeing if the highly-coveted brand is worth the hype, Nordstrom is running a limited time price match promotion on La Mer’s best sellers.

“Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” nghĩa là gì?

“Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” -> nghĩa là không có gì quý hơn độc lập và tự do.

Ví dụ
At about 5:50am, when the honour guards prepare to carry out the ceremony, the door of President Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum opens and the famous quote “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” appears.

The narrator is put in charge of planning the escape and organises it, but simultaneously reports everything to his leader among the communists (người cộng sản). For, as he says, “Uncle Ho himself, at least when he was alive, was the most committed man ever, the one who had asserted that ‘Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom.’ These were words we were willing to die for.”

The past 72 years have seen numerous achievements of historic significance, marking the development in all aspects of the Party, State and people. However, many mistakes and lessons have also been acknowledged. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, glazed over by Marxist-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts, the nation has insisted on the path of national independence and socialism (chủ nghĩa xã hội). The Party organised and encouraged the people to complete the cause of national liberation (giải phóng đất nước) and reunification (sự thống nhất lại), build and defend the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland. Resistance wars and national defense wars have shined the truth “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” as a cultural value for the viability of a nation that loves peace but has never bowed to invasion (kẻ xâm lược).

"When the time is ripe" nghĩa là gì?

"When the time is ripe" = khi khoảnh khắc chín muồi -> nghĩa là thời cơ thuận lợi để làm điều gì đã đến.

Ví dụ
Establishing diplomatic (ngoại giao) relations is not China's top concern about ties with the Vatican, Yan Kejia, director of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Religious Studies, told the Global Times. "China will give serious consideration (cân nhắc) to this issue and make a decision when the time is ripe," said Yan.

The commissioner (ủy viên hội đồng) said there were other innovations that the government had in the offing, and would be made public when the time is ripe. He noted that the ministry has produced quality hand sanitisers which are already in circulation.

Bryza underlined that when the time is ripe for negotiations (thương lượng), Russia could play a significant role while Turkey could encourage Baku “to be satisfied with their gains up to that point and to return to negotiation again about the future of Nagorno-Karabakh and about the full withdrawal of all Armenian troops.”

It is with a somewhat heavy heart (không vui, không hạnh phúc) and regret that we have made this decision and wish the organisers success with all future shows. Drupa has always represented some of the best of what can be achieved at a face-to-face event for the global printing industry. For me, personally, it would have been my fifth Drupa. It’s always been a highlight of the calendar and I look forward to returning to future events when the time is ripe.

"Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship" nghĩa là gì?

"Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship" = chú ý tới phí tổn, rò gỉ nhẹ cũng đủ để làm con thuyền to chìm -> nghĩa là chi tiêu không kiểm soát với lượng nhỏ lâu dần cũng sẽ trắng tay.

Ví dụ
Benjamin Franklin once said, "Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship." He perfectly explains the effect small expenses can have on personal finances (tài chính). Every little bit adds up when you are watching your spending.

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship.” As the Covid-19 pandemic wreaks (trút giận) havoc (tàn phá) across the world, businesses in the U.S. have not been left unscathed. In fact, almost 2% of small businesses in America have shut down permanently, according to an April survey by researchers from leading universities.

If taking a risk doesn’t hinder (cản trở) decisions even though the investors are not trustworthy, then confidence in your product or service becomes mandatory (bắt buộc). Quoting Benjamin Franklin, the man who tried till he succeeded, “Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship.” Spending within your means and needs remains a priority when finance is murky (u ám).

One of my favorite quotes comes from Benjamin Franklin: “Beware of little expenses, a small leak will sink a great ship.” My grandmother Big Mama had a similar mantra (thần chú). She said: “You can’t have a dollar without a penny.” And by that she meant that every penny is important. Franklin and Big Mama influenced my own twist on the notion that small purchases add up. So to my children I warn, “Never say something like, ‘It’s just $3.’ ”

"Kitchen-sink drama" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Annie Gavin on Unsplash

"Kitchen-sink drama" = vở kịch căn bếp -> nghĩa là phong cách nghệ thuật, sân khấu nổi tiếng của nước Anh sau Thế chiến II nói về cuộc sống hằng ngày của người dân.

Ví dụ
Too in love with the way it looks to wallow (đắm mình) too long in kitchen-sink drama, and too hard-hitting to feel like the high-flying Hollywood fantasy it sometimes wants to be, Eternal Beauty ends up being everything at once – an all or nothing psychodrama that revels in its own excess. It might be a bit messy, conflicted (mâu thuẫn) and chaotic (rối loạn) at times, but that’s sort of the whole point.

The films deal with topics which remain relatively untouched such as abortion (phá thai) (Karel Reisz’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning) and domestic abuse (Ken Loach’s enthralling debut Poor Cow) – but topics still fiercely relevant today. Kitchen sink drama has even kickstarted social change: two TV films that Loach directed, Up the Junction and Cathy Come Home, influenced the passage of the Abortion Act in 1967 and inspired the founding of homeless charity Crisis.

‘The Mackenzies’ is a perfect example of suburban (ngoại ô) kitchen sink drama. The song tracks an encounter between the neighbour who lives across the street and the main character, “the kind of guy who sees a neighbour outside and stays inside and hides,” thinking “I'll run that errand (lặt vặt) another time”, whose car breaks down in front of his house, and is invited in to the said neighbours’ house.

Throughout His House, Weekes’s seamlessly (liền mạch) blends (hòa trộn) horror with elements of kitchen-sink drama and African folklore, morphing the domestic space into an uncanny (huyền bí), liminal zone where the distinctions between past and present, as well as Africa and Europe, are blurred beyond recognition.

He further explained to police that he likes to sit and listen to music in his truck and that someone may have mistaken him playing "air drums" on his knees as an obscene act from afar.

Last week, police in St. Petersburg Florida were arresting a woman for trespassing in a gas station and repeatedly kept asking for her name.

The woman would just not comply, however, and for as many times as police would ask her name, she would tell them it was "My butt just farted."

Well, unfortunately for Ms. "My butt just farted," she had her last name tattooed on her back, so it wasn't long before police found out she was really 33-year-old Melinda Lynn Guerrero. Police believe she may have been under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol during the incident.
