"A dog-eat-dog world" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Mark Chan on Unsplash

"A dog-eat-dog world" = thế giới chó cắn chó ->  nghĩa là tình huống mà con nguời sẽ làm bất kỳ điều gì để thành công, kể cả có phải làm hại người khác.

Ví dụ
Robert Reich, former secretary of labor (lao động), was once asked after his departure from government to reflect (suy ngẫm về) on the transition. He is alleged to have said this: “Certainly at that level of government, it’s a dog-eat-dog world. On the other hand, after leaving government, I find that it’s just the opposite.” I’m guessing that Reich’s hidden meaning is simply that nothing in life is easy. Amen to that.

I once heard someone say of the pallet (tấm nâng hàng) industry, “It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there, and I feel like I am wearing ALPO underwear.” It is true that the pallet industry is among one of the most competitive industries in the United States. Customers will jump ship for a nickel (mạ kền) per pallet. At the same time, the pallet industry is friendly. It is filled with amazing people who have leaped (nhảy vào) from many different fields including banking, investing, retail, manufacturing and even law.

If you are in a position to fleece (lừa đảo) someone in dire need of a receiver, do so. This is the time to get your trades in before your league deadline. If moving a receiver, if you have a surplus (dư thừa), to upgrade another position is possible, then absolutely do it. It’s a dog-eat-dog world in fantasy football.

There is a school of thought (ý kiến, nhận định) that views the business world as a dog-eat-dog world in which greedy (tham lam) people cut corners and do everything they can to make as much money as possible. While this might be true of some individuals in the world of business (including some who have received a good deal of publicity in recent years), that is not true of the entire business community.

"Cap and gown" nghĩa là gì?

"Cap and gown" -> nghĩa là mũ vuông và áo choàng truyền thống hay được mặc trong các buổi lễ tốt nghiệp.
Ví dụ
Students will receive an email communication to their ACM student email account that outlines the details of the virtual (ảo) commencement (lễ phát bằng). Starting on Wednesday, Nov. 11, local graduates may pick up their graduation invitations, tassel, cap, and gown at the Advising Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday prior to the virtual ceremony (buổi lễ).

This time of the year isn’t just for sports apparel (quần áo) shopping. For seniors (sinh viên năm cuối) graduating in December, it’s also about ordering their cap and gown for winter graduation. But thanks to COVID, once again, graduation is canceled. So are seniors still buying their graduation gear? The answer is yes.

All vehicles will be asked to arrive at 5:30 p.m. and enter through Opportunity Avenue.  All other entrances will be blocked.   Students should be dressed completely in cap and gown on arrival.  Students will check in at a registration table in front of the SGTC gymnasium (phòng thể dục) and receive a graduation card and final instructions.

Details on the virtual ceremony, as well special photo studios that will pop up across campus in November and allow students to take cap-and-gown photos, will be shared with graduates soon.

"Dot the i's and cross the t's" nghĩa là gì?

Để kiểm lại link coi có thiếu chữ nào hem! Photo courtesy: Andrea Gantz

"Dot the i's and cross the t's" = chấm chữ i và gạch ngang chữ t -> nghĩa là tập trung và chú ý hết sức vào chi tiết của sự việc hoặc nhiệm vụ được giao.

Ví dụ
As Washington negotiators continue to battle over how to dot the I's and cross the T's to pass a new economic recovery bill with a second stimulus check (chi trả tác động kinh tế), many Americans are curious about K's, U's and V's (các dạng biểu đồ phục hồi kinh tế).

The US dollar and the United States Equities need upbeat news to balance any negative news regarding Trump’s condition. Trump has been hard at work while in hospital trying to continue his duties, mainly to dot the I’s and cross the T’s on a second stimulus bill, which the Federal Reserve believes is required to pull the United States economy out of the slump it is in. However, Non-manufacturing ISM’s are expected to print a slightly bearish figure (rớt giá) of 56, down from 56.9 the month before.

Dot the i’s and cross the t’s. Consider the home devices that constantly look (cameras – baby monitors/doorbells) and listen (those with microphones). As well as providing a spying risk, they provide hackers with a multitude (nhiều) of network entry points. Once in, lateral movement from one device to another is possible. So, while a cyber criminal may initially breach a connected doorbell, for example, they can eventually make their way to a corporate device being used in the home.

"Do someone's dirty work" = làm những công việc bẩn thỉu -> nghĩa là thay ai đó làm việc khó nhọc, mưu mô mà không ai ưa thích.

Ví dụ
My opponent has chosen to spend the final week before the election running a disingenuous (gian xảo) smear campaign (chiến dịch bôi nhọ) against myself and the State’s Attorney’s Office, instead of talking about his experience and his vision for the office. To make matters worse, he has employed a disgraced former assistant state’s attorney, Susan Jensen, to do his dirty work alongside of him.

Snobby (hợm hĩnh), egotistical, and out for blood (rất tức giận), Lenore— played by Sharon Stone in one of her best roles in years— hires Charles to do her dirty work in order to claim justice for her son. When Lenore finds out that Doctor Hanover is still practicing medicine after his botched and bloody attempt at curing Henry, she wants his head in a box.

First, the consumers we studied reported significantly lower levels of happiness when their products reminded them of humans. When autonomous products had “person-like” qualities such as human-like voices or faces, or when consumers named their products after real people, they felt less comfortable with having these products do their dirty work. In fact, some even described feeling “guilty” about using these products.

"One false step leads to another" nghĩa là gì?

"One false step leads to another" -> nghĩa là sai một li đi một dặm, tương tự với cụm từ "a miss is as good as a mile"

Ví dụ
“A miss is as good as a mile and having come so close last year maybe we should have taken it. Things weren't in place to take it last year, just wasn't the time,” said Bennett.

Go to the beach and don’t worry about the meter. What? But back home one false step leads to another. One minute over or under, one tyre past or present and the fine was absolutely warranted and rarely contested. We couldn’t walk away and he was laughing at us in his perfect suit and symmetrical (đối xứng) tie knot.

According to The Paper, Chen Xiangdong, founder and CEO of GSX, responded on his WeChat moments, claiming: “We are out of words for how shameless this report is.” Chen also quoted a Chinese idiom to argue the value of honesty: “As we often say, ‘one false step leads to another.’ This is how certain people, personalities, reputation (danh tiếng), wealth (sự giàu có), and organizations stand out from the rest. Because of trust and belief. It’s that simple.”

"A thief knows a thief as a wolf knows a wolf" nghĩa là gì?

"A thief knows a thief as a wolf knows a wolf" = trộm biết trộm như sói với sói biết nhau -> nghĩa là suy bụng ta ra bụng người.

Ví dụ
Tony: No no, I think they will poison him first. Then, they will take all his money.
James: Really? you're like a thief knows a thief as a wolf knows a wolf, right?
Tony: Lol!!!

Great minks think alike (tư tưởng lớn gặp nhau) is good but what do you think about "a thief knows a thief as a wolf knows a wolf"? Which is true for two of them?

In fact, "a thief knows a thief as a wolf knows a wolf" applies to this situation. Why can they think in the same way? You know they used to be put in the prison 2 years ago because of committing to a same crime.

"Town and gown" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Chris Ried on Unsplash

"Town and gown" = thị trấn và áo dài -> nghĩa là mối quan hệ giữa người dân địa phương và sinh viên đại học trong vùng.

Ví dụ
When it comes to the “town and gown” relationship, Short-Thompson said that she would commit to finding partnerships that would benefit both Macomb and Western. She said that this mindset would be part of a strategy (chiến thuật) to bring Western’s enrollment back to 10,000 students within 5 years.

Moving forward, I hope that NAU and the City can create a stronger and more productive town and gown relationship.  The key component (thành phần) is strengthening communication and having more frequent joint meetings with the City Council and NAU leadership to collaborate on issues of mutual interest.

At the time, Spruill said, the saying around town was, "We would love the university even more if it wasn't for the students." The Cotton District changed that, she and Ruby said. "There's always some natural tension (căng thẳng) in these town and gown relationships," Ruby said. "What Dan did in the Cotton District really brought the two together like nothing before."

In fact, he said, Wavelength has done good business over the years, bringing in not only locals (dân địa phương) from both town and gown, but out-of-town visitors.

"Knock into a cocked hat" nghĩa là gì?

"Knock into a cocked hat" -> nghĩa là đánh bại, vượt mặt.

Ví dụ
It’s worth reminding ourselves what counted as mainstream furniture design at that time. In the case of Aeron, the design may as well have come from another planet, when compared to the heavily upholstered (được phủ bọc) designs that it sought to (and eventually did) knock into a cocked hat. It looked so odd and met with such a negative reaction from its test focus groups that Herman Miller had doubts about launching it at all.

The arrival of Quinn's sculpture (điêu khắc) is an event, one that, through sheer verve and loveliness alone, seems to knock into a cocked hat the tired debate about what constitutes public art. This is public art, and let that be an end of it.

Typically, the Flag Police, though occasionally wrong, are rarely in doubt (nghi ngờ). This, however, is 2020. All bets are off. Routine quasi-official functions such as theirs have been knocked into a cocked hat.

How great is America when India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, gets a standing ovation (tung hô) at the World Economic Forum and not Donald Trump? How great is America when its mighty destructive forces, “the like of which the world has never seen”, are knocked into a cocked hat in Afghanistan?

"Knockdown drag-out fight" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Frank Busch on Unsplash

"Knockdown drag-out fight" -> nghĩa là trận chiến kéo dài, căng thẳng.

Ví dụ
Maybe Burr’s character overindulged (quá mê) in the beer samples because he gets even crazier after sampling too many.  Cause, I mean, you gotta drink at least 6 free beers before you know you like it, I guess, or that it tastes terrible, which Burr’s character (tính cách) decides. Burr and his son in the skit (nhóm) are also wearing their masks around their chin.  Burr then gets into a knockdown, drag-out fight with his son in the store over cereal.

You know, to take a step back here, the census (điều tra dân số) is ultimately about power, and it's about money. And so that there is a knockdown, drag-out fight over it should not be surprising if you look at it from that perspective. But certainly, this administration has made a number of efforts here to really try to put their stamp on how the count is conducted and who is included in this count. And they're trying to test exactly what their limits are at the Supreme Court now.

"I see this match as a pick 'em and a 50/50 knockdown drag-out fight that will really depend on who is having the better day in the end," said Shriver. "Kenin has improved so much from round to round, and this is an ideal (lý tưởng) time to keep getting better. She's certainly poised to win her second major title, but I still think this will ultimately be decided by Kvitova's racket.

Sheila, Brown’s alter-ego, like Nahla, is a fighter. The naughty nurse had more than one knockdown, drag-out fight with nemesis (kẻ thù) Lauren Fenmore (Tracey Bregman) on YR and they brought the drama — and the brawls (cãi lộn) — over to BB in 1992.
