"Flavor of the month" nghĩa là gì?

"Flavor of the month" = hương vị của tháng -> nghĩa là điều gì nổi tiếng trong khoảng thời gian ngắn, nhất thời.

Ví dụ
McElwee evaluated (đánh giá) 40 different land management and food production strategies that can reduce carbon pollution. Her goal was to identify solutions that offer climate benefits with fewer drawbacks (hạn chế). “We found some things that don’t sound particularly sexy, they don’t sound like they’re the flavor of the month, but they can be really important and they don’t get us significant trade-offs and risk,” she says.

Your goal will be to stay focused on your core (cốt lõi) values and key objectives, avoiding the “flavor of the month“ project or initiative. These become time-wasters and huge distractions to your team.

Crypto (bí mật) apps are the flavor of the month, with PayPal joining Square, Robinhood, Revolut and Ziglu, who are all competing in this space. ZenGo CEO Ouriel Ohayon talked up (bàn tán) the non-custodial aspect of the Visa-backed card, which he says sets it apart from the likes of PayPal.

"A pinch and a punch for the first of the month" nghĩa là gì?

"A pinch and a punch for the first of the month" -> lời trêu chọc trẻ con khi véo và đấm ai đó ngày đầu tháng (theo đúng nghĩa đen).

Ví dụ
Another theory is linked to that other traditional playground saying 'a pinch and a punch for the first of the month'. Once someone had inflicted (nện) their pinch and punch on an unknowing victim, saying 'white rabbits, no return' meant the victim wasn't allowed to pinch and punch their attacker back. Therefore, saying 'white rabbits' as soon as you awake on the first is supposed to protect you from those pesky (khó chịu) pinchers and punchers all day long.

A Kiwi woman's father has upped the ante (đặt cược, tăng giá) in their 15-year long prank battle by involving Air New Zealand staff. Christchurch-born actor, Bridie Connell, who now lives in Melbourne, has been in an epic war with her father on who can wish the other a "pinch and a punch for the first of the month" first.

It’s the first of February which means two things. Firstly, it’s still cold outside. Secondly, there’s a good chance someone you know has taken the opportunity to physically assault you whilst shouting “a pinch and a punch for the first of the month!” followed by “white rabbits, no return!”.

"Every month he would wait for the girls to arrive so he could do a pinch and a punch for the first of the month. "He was great at carrying on the banter (giễu cợt) with customers, and he could relate to everyone, from all walks of life.

"Rough as bags" nghĩa là gì?

"Rough as bags"  = thô như túi -> nghĩa là thô lỗ, tục tĩu, không lịch sự.

Ví dụ
In a sport of princesses, she was rough as bags. She had public tantrums with her trainers, swore (chửi thề) profusely at competition judges, skated to heavy metal tracks rather than excerpts from Swan Lake and wore tacky costumes she ran up herself; profiles noted she drove a truck and had been shooting and skinning (lột da) rabbits almost as long as she had been skating.

“I was as rough as bags to begin with but it soon came back,” he said of his flying skills. He describes the experience as a healing one and after spending nine months flying around the US talking to other veterans (cựu chiến binh) his rehabilitation (phục hồi) was complete.

It is during this last playing of the Butterworths that Beth ‘drops her bundle’, and says to the table: ‘It’s not anti-anything. I wish I was like Cheryl [Butterworth]. Cheryl’s better than me. She’s rough as bags, but she’s got more heart (tấm lòng).’

"Dumber than a bag of hammers" nghĩa là gì?

"Dumber than a bag of hammers" = ngu hơn túi đựng búa -> nghĩa là rất ngu ngốc, đần độn.

Ví dụ
The characterization (miêu tả tính cách) is both unique and outstanding, and much of the entertainment comes from seeing what happens as a result of these characters colliding (va chạm) with one another, regardless of whether they’re smarter and more cunning (xảo quyệt) than meets the eye, or if they are dumber than a bag of hammers.

The public displays of acrimony (gay gắt) between California lawmakers and President Donald Trump's administration continued on Sunday, with Representative Jared Huffman labeling Education Secretary Betsy DeVos as "rich, white, and dumber than a bag of hammers." Huffman, a Democrat who hails from Northern California, tweeted the insult from his personal account and directed it at Trump.

There are only two possible explanations for why this might be. The first is that people are dumber than a bag of hammers. The second is that when people tell you what they think about “reopening” and “masks,” they aren’t actually talking about the coronavirus. They’re telling a story about how they see themselves and their place in the world.

We next get a peek at Paul Drake's home life. His pregnant wife is preparing dinner and he's complaining his “dumber than a bag of hammers” boss forced (bắt ép) him to change his report of the crime scene.

"No mean feat" nghĩa là gì?

"No mean feat" nghĩa là đạt được thành tựu/thành công vĩ đại, nhưng không hề dễ dàng.

Ví dụ
In 2004, Woods got his hands on a 155ft megayacht (siêu du thuyền) worth a whopping (khổng lồ) £15 million and named it 'Privacy'. Unsurprisingly, running Privacy is no mean feat and it costs £1.5 million a year to do so.

Today the park is much loved by sports enthusiasts (đam mê), popular for both cricket and croquet. Creating level fields for sports in this area was no mean feat back in the day in 1930s; it was done with manual labour (lao động chân tay).

Realistically (thực tế), it was unlikely that Mitchels were going to loosen their grip on the county title but nonetheless this completed the hurling (môn bóng gậy cong) calendar for the season which is no mean feat given the obstacles (trở ngại) faced.

Those World champions who have failed to deliver at the highest level, have done a better job at elevating (nâng cao) the Intercontinental championship. Both titles have a rich history in WWE and wearing a world title or Intercontinental title is no mean feat.

"Talking point" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Mimi Thian on Unsplash

"Talking point" nghĩa là luận điểm, chủ đề có thể thảo luận.

Ví dụ
Haig had prepared a set of "talking points" for Kissinger to use in his meeting with Hoover that day. They indicated two things: that Haig was handling most of the details of the wiretap (nghe lén) program, and that both men were solicitous (lo lắng) of Hoover.

Cross talk (nói chuyện riêng) does more than wastes time—it kills opportunities. To prevent cross talk, and to help groups that are dealing with complex, boundary-spanning (bắc cầu) challenges, we need to get the group to the talking point—the point at which they are effectively engaged in exchanging meaning through open and focused dialogue.

In preparing for his February 21 meeting with Le Duc Tho, Kissinger paced up and down (đi đi lại lại) his small office practicing what he would say. "We are both scholars, men with an acute sense of history," Kissinger intoned (ngâm). Tony Lake and Richard Smyser, another foreign service (ngoại giao) officer on the staff, listened to Kissinger's rehearsal sessions and helped turn them into talking points.

"Nine times out of ten" nghĩa là gì?

"Nine times out of ten" = chín trong mười lần -> nghĩa là mọi lúc/luôn luôn, thường xuyên.

Ví dụ
“Nine times out of ten, half the time I’m refunding (trả lại) them for toilet paper and stuff,” said the worker. She adds that seeing empty shelves in not just limited to Atlanta. “[It's] outlets all over from Douglasville to Atlanta to Decatur.” Reports out of California also show a shortage of things like toilet paper, but baked goods aren't spared there either with flour becoming scarce (khan hiếm) for many shoppers.

"I can text the teacher if I see Carson needs a juice box or something," said Ford. "But nine times out of ten, she's already giving him something when she gets the text. I'm so grateful that she's giving him the chance of a normal year."

According to his former midfield partner Fletcher, the Irishman was nice to him nine times out of ten. “The great thing about Roy Keane is that he says ten things to you,” Fletcher said.

We’re not allowed to leave prison unless we have somewhere to be paroled (cam kết không tái phạm) to, so a lot of people come out into compromised situations. Every person that comes out, nine times out of ten, they are homeless.

"That does the trick" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Caleb Woods on Unsplash

"That does the trick" -> nghĩa là đó là tất cả mọi thứ cần thiết để hoàn thành công việc.

Ví dụ
Although there’s third-party (bên thứ ba) software (phần mềm) that does the trick for some Nikon cameras, this tool will allow people to use a wider range of models as webcams.

Transitioning from personal to professional life and back again requires a shift in roles and mindsets, and the time we typically spend commuting (di chuyển, đi làm) can help us make these shifts more easily. For a construction executive we know, it’s the simple act of changing from work boots to comfortable shoes and 10 minutes walking the dog that does the trick.

I can see where he’s coming from but there may be a bit more to the story. I too began teaching when the cane (roi vọt) was still in use but, as an old deputy (người đại diện) principal told me: "It’s not the cane that does the trick, it’s the talk that goes with it." In fact, I’d say that it’s what does the trick whenever we attempt to improve behaviour.

Hold an unlit (chưa cháy) match between your teeth while you chop (cắt) onions — it's the true secret weapon. Whether the sulfurous end of the matchstick stops the fumes or it's having to breathe out of your mouth that does the trick — whatever the reason, it makes chopping onions a breeze.
