"Gain dominion over" nghĩa là gì?

"Gain dominion over" -> nghĩa là lên nắm quyền/sức mạnh.

Ví dụ
Melange is a life-extending and mind-enhancing substance that enables those who use it to navigate through space, making the control of its production and distribution key to control over the galaxy. The Atreides family, led by Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) is given control of Arrakis by the Emperor, who secretly plans with the rival Harkonnen clan to destroy the Atreides line in a plot to gain dominion over Arrakis.

Soon after, an inflammatory post by Wall Street Journal reporter brought to netizens notice that Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and members of the press were shoved by police during another Lower Manhattan scuffle on the same night. The video footage that was released on Twitter shows officers using their vehicles to gain dominion over the tense encounter.

“It is illegal for God to do anything on the Earth,” she averred, “unless he works with someone.” The someone, or someones he is talking about comprise what they call “the body of Christ,” who are empowered to gain “dominion” over the Earth and to enforce their understanding of God’s agenda. This is what many observers call Dominionism.

"Come in over the transom" nghĩa là gì?

It’s funny to watch economic development take credit or pose with any business real estate or relocation transaction. One wonders how much they had to do with it or did it just come in over the transom?

If you've developed unique, effective teaching or leadership strategies, you might want to write a book to share those ideas with the world. But how do you get published? I've been in the industry for more than 13 years and have seen many proposals come in over the transom—some that were very well done and some that were missing key pieces. Here are my suggestions for preparing a proposal that will rise to the top of a publisher's inbox.

Because the deal was, in effect, a management buyout of the company, Fresh Market set up a special three-member committee of independent directors to evaluate the Apollo proposal, as well as any others that might come in over the transom after the company decided to put itself up for sale shortly after September 1, 2015. As professional referees, the special committee hired JPMorgan Chase as its financial adviser, and Cravath, Swaine & Moore as one of its legal advisers. Their job was to evaluate the various proposals to buy Fresh Market, a collection of 186 stores in 27 states as of March 2016, and to make sure that the one chosen was, in the parlance (lối nói) of Wall Street, “fair” to the public shareholders of the company “from a financial point of view.”

"After the party is over" nghĩa là gì?

"After the party is over" = sau khi tiệc tan -> nghĩa là sau cuộc hân hoan, vui mừng và phấn khích là khoảng thời gian trở nên tĩnh lặng, đầy suy tư và có cả sự lưu luyến.

Ví dụ
Whatever comes after that — like if you're elected prime minister in 2021 — it's like coming after the party is over and the only thing you have left to do is to wash the dirty dishes.

You know, whoever is president in 2021, it's basically like coming to a party after the party is over. And the only thing left to do is to wash the dirty dishes. And the next few months will be - you know, the government will hand out trillions of dollars. So it's extremely crucial to understand the choices we are facing and to focus attention not just on the limited health issues of how many new cases or how many ventilators in New York but to focus on the political level because the choices we face are in the end political of what is more important and who should get the resources.

For instance, some of the events are going to feature DJ’s who are known around the world, as well as live musicians who will perform on stage. These types of events can get very rowdy and people may get into fights and even damage property. But when it comes to house music festivals, you shouldn’t worry too much about what happens at the end of the night. Because after the party is over, people tend to go home, pack up their things, and take a long rest. Also, since you will be able to party all night long, you won’t have to worry about leaving your house all day. With house parties, you can also sleep in your house.

"A fuss over nothing" nghĩa là gì?

"A fuss over nothing" = la lối om sòm chẳng giải quyết được gì -> nghĩa là thật sự không quan trọng khi ứng phó với vấn đề bằng sự căng thẳng, giận dữ hoặc lo lắng.

Ví dụ
Other people thought the OP was making a fuss over nothing. "Why couldn't you consider him first?" one person commented. "This shows you care less about him and more about your friend." "I understand both your perspectives," someone else wrote. "You are loosing a key part of yourself but what you did was also very tacky (xơ xác, tồi tàn) and inappropriate if you are in a relationship. So I side with him, even though I sympathize with your point of view."

Vinay Gupta, dean of examinations, said the university has given a unique password to each of the 60 colleges. “We cannot distribute the admit card in person this year, given the circumstances, and we had to switch to the online mode. We do not expect our students to search for the roll numbers of other students and pull out their personal details. Students should have a moral responsibility to not indulge in something like that, considering the prevailing situation. Some students are trying to create a fuss over nothing,” he said.

So Boris Johnson is right that the time to act in order to save Christmas is now, when Tory backbenchers (thành viên của nghị viện Anh, nhưng không giữ trọng trách trong chính phủ) and rightwing commentators are still harrumphing that it’s all a fuss over nothing. Wait until they’ve fallen sheepishly (bẽn lẽn) silent and it will be too late. Infection rates among middle-aged people, who don’t shake this virus off so easily, are already creeping up, and cases are beginning to emerge in care homes too. Nobody wants to condemn fellow human beings to a miserable turkey-for-one. But unless they can get cases down in the next few weeks, politicians may be left with little choice.

"Under the baton of" nghĩa là gì?

"Under the baton of" -> nghĩa là ở dưới que của người chỉ huy dàn nhạc, được chỉ huy bởi nhạc trưởng.

Ví dụ
Yang, who was born and raised in Beijing, has been playing the cello since he was 8. At 14, he was already a promising cellist when he first performed with a symphony orchestra in Xiamen, Fujian province, under the baton of China's first female conductor, Zheng Xiaoying.

Thousands of locals and tourists who filled the iconic park enjoyed PPO’s rendition of holiday classics such as “The Nutcracker Suite,” “Kumukutikutitap,” and “So This Is Christmas.” The orchestra, under the baton of maestro Herminigildo Ranera, was also joined by the Baguio Ballet and The Nightingales.

The China NCPA Orchestra, resident orchestra of the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), announced its 2020-21 season on Nov. 12, with Ludwig van Beethoven's "Egmont" in Chinese translation being performed on the opening night. To commemorate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, the orchestra will present the legendary composer's nine symphonies and 11 overtures under the baton of Music Director Lyu Jia. Australia-based composer Yu Jingjun's new work "About Beethoven," commissioned by the orchestra, will receive its world premiere during this season.

"Stand from under" nghĩa là gì?

"Stand from under" = đứng từ dưới -> đây là cụm từ cổ về hải quan, nghĩa là thận trọng về điều gì hoặc nếu cần thiết có thể chạy xa khỏi vị trí cái ở trên sắp rơi xuống trúng mình.

Ví dụ
I see I was in a fix now. But it warn’t no use to worry; there warn’t nothing to do but just hold still, and try and be ready to stand from under when the lightning struck.

The cupola (mái vòm) of the Catholic Church, on Mississippi street, was moved several feet from its position, and it was thought last night that it would fall before morning. It leaned considerably to the northwest, and is liable to tumble at any time. Stand from under.

The city council’s reticence (tính trầm lặng, dè dặt) to enforce regulations struck the health board like a virus. Coroner Schuyler Kelley and Dr. W.W. Crawford resigned out of frustration. “This is not the time to stand from under,” Dr. Ernest Chartres-Martin scolded Crawford. “This is the time to see the city through. I’ll see the council damned before I resign.”

"Live under the cat's foot" nghĩa là gì?

"Live under the cat's foot" = sống dưới chân mèo -> nghĩa là bị chi phối/lấn át bởi ai (thường là bởi vợ).

Ví dụ
In this particular case, the woman in question grew up with a controlling mother who was domineering, and a father who went to work and came home to live under the cat's foot.

“I don’t play often enough at home; as a matter of fact, I’ve lived under the cat's foot to do that,” Travers told The Daily Times this week, pausing to shout into the background: “Hey! Nag me! I gotta play!”

"I always made up an excuse to the point where it was like, I'm too busy. How can I get away to do this? There's no way I can be away for X-amount of period of time to partake in this. Finally, after many years of living under the cat's foot, we decided at the 11th hour we were going to fill in the application. Just a few days later, we were on vacation in Cape Breton and got a call."

"What goes over the devil's back comes under his belly" nghĩa là gì?

"What goes over the devil's back comes under his belly" = cái đi qua lưng quỷ thì nằm dưới bụng của hắn -> nghĩa là chịu hậu quả do chính hành động mình gây ra; hoặc lâm vào cảnh tồi tệ do hậu quả của hành động tương tự mình đã làm với người khác.

Ví dụ
Too late for him to regret for what he's done. What goes over the devil's back comes under his belly!

What goes over the devil's back comes under his belly. Sorry, you should fix yourself and do not expect to be forgiven.

He used to hit me, then he was bullied by gangsters 2 months later. "What goes over the devil's back comes under his belly".

"Have a grip on himself" nghĩa là gì?

Trấn tĩnh bản thân thật tốt trước khi làm việc gì. Photo by Rojan Maguyon from Pexels

"Take/get/have a grip on (oneself)" nghĩa là kiểm soát/kiềm chế bản thân, làm chủ được mình.

Ví dụ
After many nights of getting up and pacing her living room floor in an attempt to get a grip on herself, she decides to go see her doctor to find out whether something is wrong with her heart.

Angrily, Gorman Diller tried to corral (chấn chỉnh) his runaway mind before he gave himself away. Be quiet, and get a grip on yourself, he mentally told himself. You're on the brink of panicking (hoảng loạn).

When I hear others judging her, telling her to get a grip on herself and move on, trying to realize that he is not into her (as if she doesn't already know that) all I can think is, "wow, you people have no ideal!"

He was now in a new role, his smile was back, and this new job had restored (khôi phục) his self confidence. On occasion in his previous role he had been caught in the crossfire. In the new role he was determined to keep a grip on himself.

"Gripe my ass" nghĩa là gì?

Rợn cả người. Photo by Roger Brown from Pexels

"Gripe one’s ass/butt/soul" = quặn cái mông -> nghĩa là điều gì gây khó chịu, phiền phức hay chọc tức ai.

Ví dụ
DeWitt certainly gripes my ass because he has been listening to the Associated Farmers too much.

You know what gripes my ass about you, Kramer? What gripes my ass is that I coulda been like you.

So after everyman, woman, and child is wiped out and gone, like you imagine, those same goddamn cockroaches (con gián) will be still crawling around happy as you please over the ruins of everything. Now the picture of that really gripes my ass.

It gripes my butt no end to see grown men sitting in an eating place with their caps or hats on. One of the basic lessons I learned in good manners when I was growing up was to remove my cap when I sat down to eat, no matter whether it be in a fast food place or a more expensive restaurant. When I see men wearing their caps or hats while eating in a public place I automatically label them, in my mind, as being dumb.

"All is grist that comes to the mill" nghĩa là gì?

Mọi thành quả bạn gặt hái được hôm nay là nhờ những sự việc đã trải qua trong quá khứ. Photo by from Pexels

"All is grist that comes to the/one's mill" = lúa nào cũng xay ra được -> nghĩa là những người bạn gặp gỡ, tất cả mọi chuyện bạn trải qua hoặc gặt hái được trong cuộc sống đều mang lại lợi ích/tác dụng nhất định.

Ví dụ
All this is grist, that comes to the mill of the anti-vivisectionists (chống giải phẫu sinh thể) who disparage (miệt thị) the scientific gain flowing from experiments on animals with all their might, and who point to the sometimes most unfortunate mistakes, that were the result.

Will you send me any scrap-book (sổ lưu niệm) you have of my Father's newspaper-cuttings, and please keep turning over in your mind any way you can help me in collecting material; all is grist that comes to my mill and the more saturated (thấm nhuần) I am with the subject before I begin to write the better the work will be.

So much the worse for us all; so much the worse for Europe today, lying helpless under his spell, where he is vouchsafed (hạ cố) the role of the man of destiny and all - conquering (chế ngự) hero, and where, thanks to a combination of fantastic chances or mischances — everything is grist that comes to his mill, and he passes unopposed (vô đối) from one triumph to another.

"Grody to the max" nghĩa là gì?

Quái dị! Photo by BROTE studio from Pexels

"Grody to the max" (tiếng lóng) nghĩa là lố bịch/kỳ quặc ở cái tầm, không thể tả nổi. "Grody" được cho là bắt nguồn từ "grotesque" (kỳ cục).

Ví dụ
As the Los Angeles Times wrote in 1982, “Grody is used to describe a disgusting object. Moon Zappa calls her toenails ‘Grody to the max,' which means disgusting beyond belief.”

She's a bubbly (năng động) mall rat with hair teased (buộc) sky-high. He's a charming punk (tay chơi rock) from the wrong side of the Hollywood Hills, and her friends think he's grody to the max.

I love that you just used the word “grody.” That needs to come back. We need some more Valley speak in this world. Like, “TROS was grody to the max, fer sure. I know, like, gag me with a spoon!”

When Julie (Deborah Foreman) dumps her preppy (giàu có) boyfriend, the last thing she expects is to find love with the rockin’ Randy (Nicolas Cage). The future’s open wide for Julie … but when her disapproving friends find Randy to be grody to the max, she is caught up in a culture clash between her Valley lifestyle and her Hollywood punk (phong cách rock).

"Stick at nothing" nghĩa là gì?

Joe Biden, người nước Mỹ muốn. Photo by The Review Univ. of Delaware

"Stick at nothing" = không bấu víu điều gì -> nghĩa là sẵn sàng làm mọi cách, không từ thủ đoạn nào để thực hiện nhiệm vụ/mục tiêu.

Ví dụ
Republicans will stick at nothing to stay in power. This gross (trắng trợn) use of power is wrong. The American people have spoken, and they want Joe Biden to lead.

The SSC of MSU-GSC actively listens to the needs of the students. SSC has initiated (khởi xướng) a call for an Academic Break. We will stick at nothing to aid the students in the challenges presented by the new learning environment. SSC stands with the students and for the students, always.

I can't, and won't, believe it myself. But even if it should be true, I am quite sure you will find a way out of it for us. I will stick at nothing, and Miss Silvester (as you will see by her letter) will stick at nothing either, to set things right. Of course, I have not said one word to my darling Blanche, who is quite happy, and suspects (nghi ngờ) nothing.

The Duke (Công tước) of Orleans was, just then, extremely jealous of the Count (Bá tước) de Melfort; and the Lieutenant (Trung úy) of the Police told the King, he had strong reasons for believing that the Duke would stick at nothing to rid himself of this gallant (dũng cảm), and that he thought it his duty to give the Count notice, that he ought to be upon his guard.
