"Have all the aces" nghĩa là gì?

"Have all the aces" = nắm giữ con át chủ bài -> nghĩa là có quyền lực, sức mạnh, kiểm soát người khác.

Ví dụ
Sundowns have all the aces in their pack. They have shown time and time again that they are one of the strongest teams in the final stretch.

We abstract (tách ra) from images, we recognise cats as having little triangular ears, they’re furry, they have a tail and we’re pretty sure fire engines don’t. But the mechanical system of recognition in machine learning systems doesn’t work the same way our brains do, so we know they can be brittle (dễ vỡ).

‘They are much better than this, but this puts us under great pressure now with scoring difference coming into the game the next day. ‘Kerry have all the aces. They can afford to lose the last game and scoring difference could cause a problem for us in this competition.’

When it comes to trade, foreign exporters have all the aces. American companies are forced to pay high tariffs (thuế xuất nhập khẩu) when exporting to countries like Korea, Colombia, and Panama, yet those same countries pay little or no tariffs when they sell their goods in our market. This puts our nation’s businesses at a disadvantage, and hurts American workers and farmers who are already struggling in a tough economy.

"Build a case" nghĩa là gì?

"Build a case" = dựng vụ việc -> nghĩa là tổng hợp, thu thập bằng chứng để ủng hộ điều gì hoặc kết tội ai.

Ví dụ
The second is policy (chính sách) outcomes (tác động) more broadly. In this case, the education system is assessed overall to build a case for the amount of quality teaching gained for Saudi Arabia out of the BLCSI program.

“They’re really viewed as hearsay (tin đồn),” Haushalter said. “We have to have corroborating (làm chứng) evidence from an eyewitness at the event.” But photos help build a case, she said, noting they must have a date stamp and information that identifies the location.

For more than five years, prosecutors from the Norfolk district attorney’s office and investigators from my team diligently (siêng năng) worked side by side to build a case that lay bare this scheme (âm mưu) and bring justice for commonwealth residents.

That certainly does have an impact (tác động), it certainly does build a case, and these are things that we all take very seriously in our considerations (cân nhắc) as to whether or not we look at making changes to the law.

"In grand style" nghĩa là gì?

"In grand style" có grand là to lớn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là rất sang trọng, quyến rũ.

Ví dụ
Nigerians, including those in the Diaspora, have extended their felicitations (khen ngợi) to one of Nigeria’s ranking lawmaker, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha who represents Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State marks her 51st birthday in grand style.

When it has come to India vs Australia series in the last one year, a very peculiar (khác thường) pattern has emerged. Australia have won the first game in grand style only to lose the next two. This was repeated in 2019 when Australia won in Sydney but were undone in Adelaide and Melbourne by the brilliance of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.

The band, of course, returned in grand style in 1978 with the album ESP and huge international hit single You Win Again.

They kicked off the ceremony with the traditional wedding which took place at the bride’s residence in Anambra. For the white wedding, the couple and their loved ones headed to the beautiful city of Lagos to celebrate. Nothing beats getting married to the love of your life in grand style, and we can attest (chứng nhận) that Brunella and Williams went all out in achieving that.

"No less than" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Budgeron Bach from Pexels

"No less than..." Còn "no less" thường nhấn mạnh ngạc nhiên một cách mỉa mai

Ví dụ
Her job is no less than to save an historic industry that was nearly lost to pollution (ô nhiễm) in the harbor from sewage (nước thải) and fertilizers (phân bón).

They were no less confused by its sudden disappearance overnight Friday. An adventure photographer said that he spotted four men dismantling (tháo dỡ) the structure, according to The New York Times.

Within the total provided, the conference (hội nghị) agreement also includes funding at no less than the fiscal year (năm tài khóa) 2005 level for activities throughout SAMHSA addressing the needs of the homeless as proposed by the Senate.

In fact, over the past seven seasons, the league has seen its salary cap (quỹ lương) per club increase by no less than $10 million per year; since 2012, the cap for each club has risen from $120.6 million to $198.2 million in 2020. Over the Cap estimates the 2021 salary cap will be $176 million, a decrease of $22.2 million or 11.2 percent from 2020.

"Nothing less than" nghĩa là gì?

2020 còn có thể tệ hơn được nữa? Photo by Polina Tankilevitch from Pexels

"Nothing less than (something)" nghĩa là cực kỳ, không có gì quan trọng/ đặc biệt/ tệ hơn được nữa.

Ví dụ
“The growth this service line has experienced over the past few years is nothing less than remarkable, and I am so proud to be part of Network that is committed to keeping care close to home for families in this community,” Haynos said.

She’s also promised to share her office with Angelenos overlooked in city governance — renters, bus riders, workers — which, due to the way L.A. is structured, will require nothing less than a major redistribution (tái phân chia) of power.

“What we’ve been given is nothing less than what the state guidelines that are in place for (levels) red and and orange, so yeah, I was being a little greedy (tham lam), but I definitely will feel satisfied with what we’ve been given for sure,” she said.

There are incredibly important policy questions hinging (xoay quanh) on the outcome, on topics including the pandemic, health-care reform and climate change. But there’s something even bigger at stake in Georgia: nothing less than whether or not we have a functioning democracy (nền dân chủ).

"Know little and care less" nghĩa là gì?

Chẳng việc gì phải bận tâm. Photo by Roland Hechanova on Unsplash

"Know little/nothing and care less (about someone or something)" nghĩa là chẳng biết và chẳng buồn quan tâm.

Ví dụ
I suppose Mrs Barwick might be mildly interested but most of them know nothing and care less, just so long as there are birds in the sky and fish in the sea and peat on the ground.

Many devoutly religious (sùng đạo) people, in particular, find it especially difficult to concede this in the case of others who know little, and care less, about matters that are most precious to them.

As if these demands aren't enough, the corporate producer must also be a politician able to defend the corporate media department to executives who know little and care less about the television production process.

Rather, I will single out some of the more interesting events that impressed me at the time and that in retrospect (nhìn lại) may hold some interest even for readers who know little and care less about the problems of the armed services (lực lượng vũ trang).

"Jump the shark" nghĩa là gì?

Kẹt rồi!!! Photo courtesy: The Skull

"Jump the shark" = nhảy qua cá mập -> nghĩa là sự việc đã đến thời không còn nổi tiếng nữa hoặc bắt đầu giảm chất lượng. Cụm từ này bắt nguồn từ một bộ phim khi bắt đầu hết thời, diễn viên chính diễn một cảnh phim nhảy qua cá mập để gây chú ý một lần rồi thôi.

Ví dụ
“This is Trump’s jump the shark moment,” John Feehery, a former key aide (sĩ quan phụ tá) to Republican congressional leaders, told the Daily News. “It’s all downhill from here.”

But as much as jumping the shark is generally seen as the irreversible death knell (hồi chuông báo từ) for a hit TV show, there are those precious few series which have actually been able to "un-jump" the shark, if you like.

This quote is a blend of two famous idioms: 'Don't look a gift horse in the mouth' and 'Jumping the shark'. The former is cautionary advice to not look for faults with something given as a gift, namely Rick's love for Beth. The latter is a general pop-culture term referring to when something (typically a show) begins to lose popularity and attempts a publicity gimmick that has the unintended effect of highlighting irrelevance. Ironically, the show has reached a point in its career where it is so popular that fans have begun to wonder when it will jump the shark itself.

"Less and less" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Süleyman Şahan from Pexels

"Less and less" nghĩa là ít dần, giảm dần, ít thường xuyên hơn.

Ví dụ
Of course, if your garden is truly sustainable (bền vững) and low-maintenance (ít phải giữ gìn), over time you should be able to rely less and less on your irrigation system (hệ thống tưới tiêu).

As the storm moves forward, it will encounter incresing opportunities to change course. Each prospective deviation (chệch hướng) opens up new possibilities. That's why the trajectory (đường đi, quỹ đạo) becomes less and less certain the more days we peer ahead.

Spenser starts off these novels in a position or stance (lập trường) of strength and certainty , full of impatience (mất kiên nhẫn) with his mixed - up clients who seem to have no idea about correct behavior . But as the series progresses he becomes less and less certain, less and less inclined to solve complex problems from behind a rigid screen.

This world had a stronger pull on you, so you stayed here, but with the link we'd created from the demonstration, you were able to draw others across—only as phantoms (ảo ảnh) at first, but eventually with more and more solidity. And less and less dependence upon your presence, as the links grew stronger and the worlds drifted (cuốn vào) closer.

"More than you can ever know" nghĩa là gì?

"Em là tất cả của anh." Photo by Prime Cinematics from Pexels

"More than you can (ever) know" hoặc "more than you('ll ever) know" nghĩa là rất nhiều, rất lớn, vượt quá mức mà bạn có thể nghĩ tới.

Ví dụ
Everything has been one big fat lie. You wanted to hurt me and you've succeeded, more than you could ever know. You've also reassured me that I did exactly the right thing in not marrying you, you selfish, narcissistic (tự luyến) bastard (đồ khốn)!

A message on the GoFundMe site said: “We’re sorry to announce that due to Covid-19 Yorkshire Belle is at risk. We are trying everything we can to get the boat back up and running for next year but we need help. Anything you can give would be appreciated more than you could ever know.”

But I want you to understand a secret about that wonderful power: The power of God is discovered in the power of His love. He loves you more than you could ever know! And though you may not see it, His love is reaching out to you at this very moment, seeking to fill all the places of need and hurt buried deep within you.

I, too, have been thinking that in only six and a half more weeks we'll be married. You and me darling, for the rest of our lives. That's the most wonderful thought I've ever had to think about. I love you more than you'll ever know and I want to live with you and be your wife and do my utmost (hết sức) to make you happy for the rest of my life. You mean so much to me darling, you'll just never know how much and I promise to cherish you forever.

"More than a little excited" nghĩa là gì?

Thật đáng mong đợi làm sao. Photo by Wictor Cardoso from Pexels

"More than a little (excited/shocked...)" nghĩa là khá, nhiều, rất... (về mặt cảm xúc).

Ví dụ
To be honest, I was more than a little surprised when the invitation arrived and accompanied by a personal note from Fowler himself.

Kate had long since sobered up (tỉnh rượu), spurred on (vội vã) at the prospect of catching an early flight to L.A. the following day and feeling more than a little excited about the trip.

I was ushered (được dẫn) into a common room at the school and asked to wait there. I think it was a girls' school, but I am not sure about that. I was nervous and more than a little excited to see Joyce.

It catered (cung cấp) mostly to the skiers who were visiting Stowe, and it was likely the young man behind the desk would be more than a little shocked when she checked out barely ninety minutes after checking in.

"Ride in style" nghĩa là gì?

Dream Limousines, Inc has a rich history of providing high-caliber (hạng cao) limousines and private drivers for all their clients. The services are great for travelers who need transportation to and from the airport, and individuals who just want to ride in style.

We've teamed up with Gear Patrol to give you the chance to win the best stuff to go with your ride. All you have to do is sign up below. One lucky winner will receive Gear Patrol’s grand prize valuing (có giá trị từ) $1,681 consisting of goods to help you ride in style.

Renting (thuê) a limo gives businesses and individuals safer transportation anywhere they want to go. The clients can hire a limo service for everyday use or when they travel. The private drivers won't pry into (tọc mạch) their business, and they remain discreet. The automobiles are beautiful and allow clients to ride in style.

Thinking about a big, ride-in-style SUV with abilities (khả năng) for the whole family, without discounting comfort, space or usability, the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban fits the bill exponentially well.

"Right out of the gate" nghĩa là gì?

Xuất phátttt! Photo courtesy: Peter Miller

"Right out of the gate" = ngay khi ra khỏi cửa -> nghĩa là ngay lập tức hoặc ngay từ khi bắt đầu. Cụm từ này xuất phát từ môn đua ngựa, các chú ngựa đều phải đứng sau "starting-gate" (rào chắn) để đảm bào tính công bằng của cuộc chơi.

Ví dụ
What makes MOON relevant (hợp thời) right out of the gate is that new innovators, such as the companies found in the rookie ETF, have histories of outperforming (làm tốt hơn) their established, large-cap (những công ty có giá trị vốn hoá thị trường hơn 10 tỷ USD) counterparts.

Slowing the pace of the transition could hamstring (làm què quặt) a new administration right out of the gate. The Trump administration, experts say, never fully recovered from the slow pace of hiring from its mismanaged 2016 transition after Trump tossed aside carefully prepared plans the day after his victory.

We got a lot of things right out of the gate. First, timing. A generation ago, the Bill Gates and Michael Dell types were the exception. But over the past decade, wunderkinds (thần đồng) became the rule: Digital natives had the vision and tools to disrupt (đột phá) pretty much every industry, and funders lined up to write billion-dollar checks to entrepreneurs not yet old enough to rent a car. Second, our process enabled us to evaluate thousands of nominees in an apples-to-apples (tương tự) way, and by bringing in legends from each industry as outside judges, the list carried extra validity. It clicked.

"What's the catch?" nghĩa là gì?

Ma thuật gì đây? Photo courtesy: Mr Kasman

"What's the catch" có "catch" là cái bẫy, mưu kế lừa người = cái bẫy là gì -> cụm từ này nghĩa là sự việc này có uẩn khúc, thường được dùng để hỏi vặn khi sự việc tốt đẹp đến khó tin.

Ví dụ
So the U.S. Court of Appeals (Toà án cấp phúc thẩm) for the 11th Circuit (khu vực) ruled it was unconstitutional (trái pháp luật) to force felons (người phạm tội) to pay all their financial obligations before allowing them to register to vote, but what’s the catch?

So, you might be thinking to yourself, "What's the catch?" The good news is that there's nothing out of the ordinary for a gaming laptop in the $800-900 price range. According to a review from NotebookCheck, the display panel isn't best-in-class and the RAM is only one stick of 8GB, but there aren't any surprises beyond that. The 256GB SSD is definitely on the small side, but both that and the RAM can be easily upgraded later on.

That’s a lot of good stuff, but remember, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. So, what’s the catch? Well apparently, there are quite a few, something that Zoom CEO Eric Yuan has publicly acknowledged and apologized for, himself. The bigger concern is, as the platform is being subject to more and more intense scrutiny (xem xét kỹ lưỡng) — since popularity also comes at a cost, obviously — more and more loopholes are also being discovered every other day. Some of them may be minor, some catastrophic (thảm hoạ).

Bài trước: "You had me at hello" nghĩa là gì?

"In the flesh" nghĩa là gì?

"In the flesh" = bằng xương bằng thịt -> nghĩa là hiện thân, xuất hiện ngay trước mắt, hoàn toàn có thật.

Ví dụ
Despite never appearing in the flesh in any of the movies, former Jedi padawan Ahsoka Tano is undoubtedly one of the most popular characters in Star Wars. A hero in every sense (ý nghĩa) of the word, Ahsoka’s journey spans almost the entire film saga, just in animated form.

Six relatives (người quen) of the victim (nạn nhân) were arrested in the case. They had allegedly colluded  (thông đồng) with various brokers in the flesh trade to send the child to them at a weekly package of Rs 1.5 lakh.

The pair are not believed to have seen in each other in the flesh since a chance meeting in Marbella in July. Although Fury has admitted he regularly calls Joshua on FaceTime demanding (yêu cầu) a fight.

Sport fans haven’t had to wait quite as long to see their heroes in the flesh again. But to suggest they are eager to get back into their team’s stadium is something of an understatement (nói giảm).

"Loaded for bear" nghĩa là gì?

"Loaded for bear" = nạp đạn và sẵn sàng đợi gấu đến -> nghĩa là sẵn sàng đương đầu với tấn công/chỉ trích, chuẩn bị đánh nhau hoặc cãi vã.

Ví dụ
“We’re loaded for bear and ready for a successful Christmas season like we had last year,” Reny said from his office in Newcastle. But last year’s Christmas had no COVID, meaning no fear of infection (lây nhiễm) or crowds, and no big unemployment spike (chông gai) hurting family incomes.

The community group Cops and Barbers certainly came loaded for bear Wednesday evening. The group pulled up with enough turkey (gà tây) at a community center along Tuckaseegee Road to serve 300 people.

"ALIENS BURNING ARMORED PERSONNEL CARRIER PX 1/18 SCALE VEHICLE – A PREVIEWS Exclusive! A lone survivor, floating through space. A distress call from a distant colony (thuộc địa). A group of battle hardened marines, full of confidence and loaded for bear.

Anyway Jackie came in loaded for bear, a young guy looking to set things straight. Long story short Squier suggested they light up some weed, they get stoned and all was well. Jackie is a pistol.
