"Draw to a close" nghĩa là gì?

“Draw to a close” -> nghĩa là đi đến kết thúc.

Ví dụ
Assessment phases for Metrolinx’s GO expansion (mở rộng) draw to a close. The latest design of the transit system will deliver 15-minute, two-way, all day service on core segments (đọan cốt lõi) of the GO rail system.

Ottawa under pressure (chịu áp lực) from First Nations as fish farm consultations draw to a close. Ottawa is coming under increasing pressure from First Nations in B.C. as deadlines around contentious (tranh cãi)  fish farms on the West Coast draw near.

Dane, Milwaukee Recounts Draw To A Close. The ten-day vote recount (đếm lại) effort, which involved hundreds of processors (người xử lý) and cost the Trump campaign an estimated $740,000, shifted the results of Dane County’s election by 58 net votes, up from 45 reported yesterday.

"Good for nothing" nghĩa là gì?

“Good for nothing” -> nghĩa là không có giá trị, không có ích gì.

Ví dụ
What drew me to this place in the beginning were, of course, chukars, game birds plentiful (phong phú) on its dry, wind-swept slopes (con dốc). If you don’t hunt chukar, it’s a place easy to dismiss as good for nothing but rattlesnakes (rắn đuôi chuông) and sagebrush (cây ngải đắng).

In the spirit of keeping my friends close and my enemies (kẻ thù) closer, I maintain a rogue (giả mạo) email account for updates from the Trump folks. Usually, it’s good for nothing more than a few laughs like the time Eric promised to mail me a “special hat” if I’d send his dad some money.

"I became confused (bối rối) and what not, because all of a sudden I was one of those people that were not to be spoken of — one of those dirty, good for nothing black people that didn't belong in (thuộc về) this country … That's when my life went out of control, because I didn't know who I was."

“You can't sit in two chairs at once” nghĩa là gì?

“You can't sit in two chairs at once” = bạn không thể ngồi trên hai ghế một lúc -> nghĩa là không thể làm nhiều việc cùng một lúc nên cần biết ưu tiên việc nào quan trọng nhất để làm trước.

Ví dụ
It's impossible for you to accomplish these things simultaneously that may result in nothing. Just do what's on the top of your privilege first. Again, you can’t sit in two chairs at once.

They say you can’t sit in two chairs at once. They’re clearly unaware of the Hyundai Motor Group. No, not the Hyundai Motor Company that has sold India some great cars through its wholly owned subsidiary (phụ trợ) Hyundai Motor India Ltd. since 1996, but the aforementioned parent organisation that also owns the newest Korean kid on the Indian automotive block, Kia Motors. Just a few hours ago, my inbox rattled with two new emails, one from Kia and one from Hyundai, both announcing the appointment of Euisun Chung as chairman of the Hyundai Motor Group. Makes me wonder why they were both skittish (hay lồng, bất kham) about this story.

“Once over lightly” nghĩa là gì?

“Once over lightly” = một lần khinh suất -> nghĩa là rất nhanh chóng/vội vàng, qua loa và cẩu thả. Thường dùng như một tính từ đứng trước danh từ.

Ví dụ
“ACT is concerned that the Prime Minister, who yesterday voiced confidence in the PHARMAC model, will attempt to run a once-over-lightly review by officials that won’t get to the heart of the issues.

This kind of “once-over lightly” approach to the complex requirements of a police investigation is a worry to Glynn Rigby. “Some of the statements are weak…it’s been a very cursory (nhanh, lướt qua) interview with neighbours and potential witnesses. And perhaps they haven’t grasped some of the broader issues that they should be addressing from a more investigative point of view.”

Made as part of the Australiana collaboration between Screen Australia and Vice, Burlesque Boys encapsulates (tóm lược) both the strengths and weaknesses of the series. The filmmaking isn’t especially polished and – at just 30 minutes – there’s the feeling of everything getting the once-over-lightly. But this is also a genuine peek into a corner of Australia most of us have no access to: behind the scenes with a group of male strippers. The faint flavour of This Is Spinal Tap adds to the fun. MH

“Once and for all” nghĩa là gì?

“Once and for all” = một lần và mãi mãi -> nghĩa là lần cuối; hoặc mãi mãi/vĩnh cửu.

Ví dụ
A COUPLE who sent love letters to one another during the Second World War are set to celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary... proving once and for all that love is stronger than oak!

It is vital to not only reverse the widening gender gap in economic outcomes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic but to aim at closing the gender gap once and for all. The results of the high-frequency phone surveys provide a rich evidence base for policymakers and are an opportunity we cannot afford to miss in closing Ethiopia’s gender gaps (khoảng cách giới tính).

"We've got to all take this really helpful guidance and live it for a few months as we fight back this second wave once and for all and as the vaccine comes into this city more and more," the mayor said. "So this is our last big push where we can get through soon to the point where more and more New Yorkers will be vaccinated and we turn a corner."

“Once a priest, always a priest” nghĩa là gì?

“Once a priest, always a priest” = một lần là linh mục, cả đời là linh mục -> nghĩa là khi ai đó làm công việc gì thì sẽ luôn giữ tính chất/cốt cách đúng với công việc đó dù sau này không còn làm việc nữa.

Ví dụ
“Once a priest always a priest.” White commented, “He was ordained (phong chức), he was a priest his whole life (and) his spirituality comes out in his music, all you have to do is listen and you’ll hear it.”

Many people embrace their retirement years as a time to reflect and experience life as more free individuals. Some people travel, some take a nap every day. Still some golf and spend time with family and friends. We all know people who keep working or explore new work as a second calling. But, what about priests? Are their experiences of retirement any different? Is it once a priest, always a priest?

In 1969, feeling he could no longer support the church’s views on divorce and remarriage, intercommunity services (dịch vụ dùng chung) and the celibacy (sống độc thân) of priests, Leo Lynch resigned from what he called his “institutional” church. Lynch married the former Judith Hayes in 1970, and continued to minister to the faithful, celebrating Mass with the Emmanuel Catholic community. As people told his family Monday, “once a priest, always a priest.” He had many gifts, including playing the padre (linh mục) in the Midland Music Society’s 1980 production of “Man of La Mancha,” one of several roles he held in community theater.

"Simple forms of life" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Bill Oxford on Unsplash

"Simple forms of life" -> nghĩa là dạng sống đơn giản (thường được dùng trong khoa học).

Ví dụ
Simple forms of life are quick to colonise (thuộc địa hóa) new 'desert' landscapes created by shrinking (co lại) Arctic ice (băng Bắc Cực).

Over the last decade, astronomers (nhà thiên văn học) have expended great effort trying to find what traces of simple forms of life—known as “biosignatures”—might exist elsewhere in the universe.

That makes phosphine potentially what scientists call a biosignature — a chemical signal that can be detected (khám phá) by spectroscopic telescopes (kính thiên văn quang phổ) that could indicate (chỉ ra) a planet harbors (chứa) at least simple forms of life.

“If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times” nghĩa là gì?

“If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times” -> nghĩa là nhắc ai đó quá nhiều lần (gắt gỏng, cáu kỉnh).

Ví dụ
Telling or instructing does none of these things. It stifles creativity and innovation and encourages a culture of dependency on the leader, seeing them as the person with all the answers. If you've ever found yourself saying (or thinking) 'how many times must I tell you?' or 'if I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times!' you'll know this to be true.

I put it down to jealousy because she often finds us gazing into one another’s eyes and she wishes I would do the same with her. “Enough is enough,” she said to me when my mate had gone. “He spends every moment of the day with you and if I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times. I don’t want that dog on our bed.” There really is no point arguing with her when she gets in one of those moods.

If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times–cheques (ngân phiếu, séc) are expensive! According to research by Deloitte, the total cost to the economy for all the cheques Canada cuts each year is $5.8 billion. Prepaid is not only significantly cheaper–an electronic payment costs less than a dollar–it also offers a plethora (trạng thái thừa thãi) of other advantages over both cheques and alternative cashless transactions (giao dịch thay thế không tiền mặt). Combining the benefits of old-world cheques with new-age digital payments, prepaid is a secure, traceable (có thể theo dõi qua dấu vết), and auditable form of payment that is reliable and fast. With more than 550 million Canadian cheques produced each year by businesses and government agencies, there is a large, untouched market opportunity in Canada for emerging payments like prepaid.

"Oh my days" nghĩa là gì?

“Oh my days” -> nghĩa là câu cảm thán thể hiện sự kinh ngạc.

Ví dụ
"Oh my days, that's shocking! That is so random"

Oh my days! John knocks in a fine red but then misses an almost dead-straight blue!

A man then walks out in front of the car to examine (kiểm tra) the damage done to it. A cry of "Oh my days" can be heard before another person shouts: "one more".

In the middle of chomping into a mince pie, Holly made a face and she hid her mouth behind her fist. Alice continued: "You're going to get icing sugar all over your carpet but oh my days, this is just - Holly, eat it!"

"Have a bad case of the simples" = ngu nhất trong những người ngu -> nghĩa là rất ngu ngốc.

Ví dụ
That boy has a bad case of the simples. He can't understand anything.

During the covid pandemic, they have a bad case of the simples when they escape in isolation.

She behaves smart enough on the playground, but get her in the classroom and she has a bad case of the simples.

Masks help stop the spread of coronavirus - the science is simple and I'm one of 100 experts urging governors to require public mask-wearing. But there are still some cases have a bad case of the simples who not wearing masks.

“There are only 24 hours in a day” nghĩa là gì?

“There are only 24 hours in a day” = một ngày chỉ có 24 tiếng thôi đó -> dùng để thôi thúc/yêu cầu ai đó hoàn thành công việc nhiều hơn có thể chỉ trong một ngày.

Ví dụ
There are only 24 hours in a day. We have to use our time wisely, maintain our own self-care, and guard against burnout. That means understanding that people are not going to be as productive as this period continues with no real end in sight.

The value of friendship has been and remains unequivocal (rõ ràng) for me. But the place I turn for a lot of my emotional nourishment is the same place where many are inclined to cut corners. This corner-cutting is necessary too, because there are only 24 hours in a day and, with an increasing share devoured by work, less time remains for family, meaningful hobbies or friendship.

Something has to go. There are only 24 hours in a day. What are you willing to give up? What are the most important things in your life? This was coming from the guy who is typing at his computer to get an article done about balance and sport rather than taking 30 minutes to get a quick workout in (ok, guilt has taken over, I'll be right back!). There are always going to be parties, there are always going to be nights out at the movies or video games night, but consider those times to be useful for catching up on schoolwork, studying for a big test, or getting in a couple more reps of practice to make sure you are prepared for game day. There might also be a time in your life when you have to decide on committing to just a few activities or even focusing on one. Remember, there are only so many hours in your day.

“The dear only knows” nghĩa là gì?

“The dear only knows” = "God only knows", chỉ ông trời mới biết -> nghĩa là không ai biết; tôi không biết/chẳng có khái niệm gì.

Ví dụ
The dear only knows what the Covid situation will be by July, but if the deity is a hip-hop fan, they're sure to grant a temporary reprieve (sự hoãn) for Longitude in Dublin in July.

The re-election of Trump was supposed to usher in the Great Awakening, an Armageddon-like version of a near future where only the true Q believers would remain in the upright. The dear only knows how the QAnon con artists will try and explain this one away.

After the Liverpool game and in the absence (sự vắng mặt) of more forwards, Roy Keane, a former United player and now a commentator on Sky Sports, analyzed Kun's situation and blamed his injuries on a possible overweight. “My problem with Agüero is that when he came back he looked overweight. The dear only knows what size of pants he is wearing. It seemed heavy. Sometimes you come out of injury and it can be difficult to run. Typically, it takes players two to three weeks to regain that speed. I was worried when he came back because he looked really overweight. It is difficult to catch up but you have to try not to gain kilos, “he said in the microphones.

"As simple as a child" nghĩa là gì?

"As simple as a child" -> nghĩa là hồn nhiên như đứa trẻ.

Ví dụ
But what if this technique could be simplified — the first step as simple as a child blowing bubbles with a straw?

In a letter of sympathy (sự cảm thông), the secretary of the nearby Sinn Féin Club wrote of Mick: “Physically a giant, he was as simple as a child. Earnest (tận tâm) and sincere, he was amiable (tử tế), jolly (vui vẻ) and cheery (vui tính)."

Shahnawaz found Bangabandhu to be “as simple as a child yet unbending in courage; as strong as steel when necessary. Coupled with this was his incomparable strength (sức mạnh vô song) of mind and steadfast (kiên định) devotion (chân thành) to his own ideals."

Something as simple as a child’s birthday shouldn’t affect the likelihood that he or she or a family member gets the flu. The toll the Covid-19 pandemic will take this winter is hard to predict (khó có thể đoán trước). Let’s not give ourselves more problems than we already have.

“Change is the only constant in life” nghĩa là gì?

“Change is the only constant in life” = chỉ sự thay đổi mới bất biến trong cuộc sống -> nghĩa là không có điều gì là mãi mãi.

Ví dụ
If change is the only constant in life, then 2020 has been one of the most consistent years in human history! Navigating the changes, however, is an ongoing learning curve. The pandemic — and the measures now in place to control it — have affected every facet of our daily lives. From the way you work to the way you express affection, it seems the ground is constantly shifting beneath our feet.

Heraclitus, the Greek philosopher said, “Change is the only constant in life.” We are always having to adapt and change to adverse situations in our lives – whether it is an election, pandemic, financial issues, or the death of a loved one. With your Resilience Toolbox in hand, you’ll be able to find a light in whatever you experience. But like all good things in life, you must practice it. So don’t wait – try something new and positive and see where this takes you.

Some wise person once said, “change is the only constant in life”. That has certainly been true for most of us this year. We have all had to cope with changes in the world, in our community, in our everyday work or school life and personally. Learning to wear a mask was stressful for most of us. The lack of socialization wasn’t a welcomed change for most of us. If you read this column on a regular basis, you know I have had to adjust to some health issues this year. Not being able to wander the woods alone was a drastic change for me. Not hugging or visiting my grandkids was a struggle. Accepting the fact that I am one of those fragile (yếu ớt) elderly people they talk about on the news was a kick in the stomach. That realization has brought about the biggest change of all for me. I have moved to town. I am making my home in a lovely place where everyone has gray hair or no hair at all and we all have wrinkles (nếp nhăn).

“Able to take only so much” nghĩa là gì?

“Able to take only so much” -> nghĩa là không thể chịu đựng được sự đau đớn về thể xác hay tinh thần (hơn được nữa).

Ví dụ
Some of the children are able to take only so much in the end, especially in light of a horrific sexual crime.

Able to take only so much insult, Cena in The Marine reaches a breaking point and finishes off three guys in quick succession, like a pro security officer of a compound should.

Need I add, not all atheists (người vô thần) have the same disposition (sự sắp đặt, mệnh trời). In fact, many find the hostility of the new atheists an embarrassment. I have met many a cordial (ghét cay ghét đắng) conversationalist who is atheistic in his or her belief, and we've had the best of conversations. Many have remarked that they have been able to take only so much of Dawkins and his followers and then stopped even reading them. Whatever worldview we espouse, dialogue and debate should take place with civility and courteous listening. But our times make that ideal so elusive (thoái thác, lảng tránh). Holding a supposedly noble belief and reducing it to ignoble means of propagation (lan truyền) makes the one who holds that belief suspect.

“In line with” nghĩa là gì?

“(Be) in line with (someone or something)” -> nghĩa là nhất quán hoặc hòa hợp/theo thỏa thuận với ai/cái gì

Ví dụ
Latvia: "A missed opportunity to adopt a territorial reform in line with the European Charter of Local Self-Government"

The Cabinet has approved plans to give the judiciary a pay increase in line with other rises in the public sector despite concerns raised by the Green Party.

This reduction is in line with a general global decline in the percentage of deaths caused by communicable diseases. For example, HIV/AIDS dropped from the 8th leading cause of death in 2000 to the 19th in 2019, reflecting the success of efforts to prevent infection, test for the virus and treat the disease over the last two decades. While it remains the fourth leading cause of death in Africa, the number of deaths has dropped by more than half, falling from over 1 million in 2000 to 435 000 in 2019 in Africa.

“For (one's) (own) sake” -> nghĩa là làm vì lợi ích (của ai đó) hoặc vì bản thân.

Ví dụ
“My job in some sense is to teach and encourage (khuyến khích) young people in math, which is very close to my heart,” Urschel said. “Math for its own sake is a pretty reasonable pursuit (theo đuổi) because no matter what field you go into, you really need to able to think reasonably to some degree.”

The run of injuries (chấn thương) has seemingly locked Joe Burns in for a start at Adelaide Oval but the Queenslander will be desperate (tuyệt vọng) to find form against the pink ball at the SCG if not for his own sake than to end speculation over his spot in the XI.

The truth haunted (ám ảnh) him and, as the only child to know the true stakes of their situation but unable to tell anyone, Ray became isolated in the nightmare (ác mộng). He grew up scared, not just for his own sake, but for his family's as well.

“Keep sight of” nghĩa là gì?

“Keep sight of (someone/something)” -> nghĩa là giữ vị trí để có thể quan sát được ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Much has been said of the challenges (thách thức) faced (đối mặt) by businesses – and economies as a whole – during 2020. However, there are some good news stories to keep sight of amid these too, and the growth (sự tăng trưởng) in African economies is one such example.

I have to say that the decision we are taking will help to make our streets safer, because I believe that whenever we take action in the sector of transport and especially road transport, we must always keep sight of our goal to halve (giảm một nửa) the number of casualties on Arizona roads.

Make sure that any device has the necessary updates, such as operating system updates (like iOS or android) and software/antivirus updates. Ensure your computer, laptop, or device, is used in a safe location, for example where you can keep sight of it and minimise who else can view the screen, particularly if working with sensitive personal data.

"Cheer him to the echo" nghĩa là gì?

"Cheer someone to the echo" có cheer là chúc mừng và echo là tiếng vang -> cụm từ này nghĩa là vỗ tay chúc mừng/hoan nghênh nhiệt liệt thật lâu.

Ví dụ
As the last triumphant (hân hoan) notes rang out from the aria which Pavarotti gave to the World Cup, Puccini's Nessun Dorma from Turandot, the audience rose in the rain to cheer him to the echo. Prince Charles and Princess Diana were for once very much extras in someone else's great show.

They know that Tendulkar's greatness transcends (vượt qua) the fallibility (có thể sai lầm) of the instant, and they cheer him to the echo all the way off. At the end of my aisle, two people get up and leave. They've come to see Tendulkar, and not even Sehwag will do.

Aside from Lennie Hayton, Lena says her near and dear have never been particularly impressed by her talent. “My daughter used to say, ‘ Why don’t you sing like Patti Page?’ And my granddaughters like Blondie, and they like Kiss.” Still, she doesn’t suffer from lack of adulation (nịnh hot). At every performance, crowds cheer her to the echo. At one point when Lena is telling the audience about her days at Café Society Downtown, she lists some of her heroes. Nat Cole, Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson. She says the names lovingly. “I have known the best,” she says. And been the best, too.

"As miserable as sin" nghĩa là gì?

"As miserable as sin" = khốn khổ như phạm tội -> nghĩa là khốn khổ, bất hạnh đến tột cùng.

Ví dụ
Many entrepreneurs (chủ doanh nghiệp) are as miserable as sin. And it’s because, as Schumacher says, the unlimited pursuit of wealth means you don’t enjoy life. Happipreneurship is the opposite of that.

"To see the artwork ,very 1980s it was hilarious, we look as miserable as sin, the perms, outfits - it brought it all back. But it was the time. “I am so thrilled (rùng mình) with it all and the response which has been absolutely amazing. But it really is a joy and so exciting for us. We don’t take it for granted -it’s another chance for us. There is life in the old birds yet.

I actually gave up for three years and was as miserable as sin for the entire time before deciding I “would just have one” with a beer in a pub on the day the smoking ban (lệnh cấm) was brought in.

All of these things could mean that you are going to be in your house for longer that you might expect. As a result, the money return will mean very little if you are as miserable as sin.

"Short but sweet" nghĩa là gì?

"Short but sweet" = ngắn nhưng ngọt -> nghĩa là ngắn gọn, súc tích (đầy đủ thông tin).

Ví dụ

Typically, several children read award-winning essays (bài văn) from the VFW's essay contest, sing patriotic (yêu nước) songs and get to mingle with the veterans afterward. "All bets are off" nghĩa là gì?

"All bets are off" = tất cả đặt cược bị hủy bỏ -> nghĩa là tình huống tưởng như biết chắc/đoán trước trong tương lai giờ trở nên hoàn toàn khó đoán, không biết được điều gì sẽ xảy ra; nghĩa khác là thỏa thuận/hợp đồng không còn hiệu lực.

Ví dụ
“The next two or three weeks will really tell the tale,” he said “If we do a really good job, we can stay just a little bit ahead of where the COVID numbers are — as long as we don’t have a major (nguy hiểm) surge (trào lên). If we have a major surge, I think all bets are off.”

But it’s 2020, so all bets are off — and even Kanye West urinated (đi tiểu) on social media so there’s that. In all seriousness, though: Had a cop been nearby, the reveler could have been arrested and charged with indecent (khiếm nhã) exposure under Florida law.

All bets are off in 2020, and the boxing world just served up another stunner (cực kì hấp dẫn) in a year that many thought couldn’t get any stranger. Logan Paul, yes that Logan Paul, is set to fight Floyd Mayweather February 20th, 2021.

And here we are, once again. The North London Derby is back, and so too are a select number of fans for the first time since the pandemic began.
