Không khí Giáng sinh tưng bừng trên thế giới

cảnh sát greenwood tìm thấy túi ma túy trong hộp tặng quà giáng sinh... :D
-----

Greenwood PD made a post on Facebook, sharing a photo of a small bag that allegedly (bị cáo buộc) contained (chứa) marijuana inside of it.

...Greenwood PD has been collecting toys through Operation Santa Claus for local families in need who have kids for more than 30 years. They also accept new, unwrapped toy donations and money to help offset the costs of buying the gifts and providing wrapping paper (giấy gói quà), etc. to the families.

"Great talkers are little doers" nghĩa là gì?

“Great talkers are little doers” -> nghĩa là kẻ nói nhiều nhưng làm chẳng bao nhiêu.

Ví dụ
John won't stop blabbing (nói ba hoa) long enough to get anything done here. Man, great talkers are little doers!

Blow the trumpet of the iconic MMGS, if you don’t blow it with signposts (biển chỉ đường) everywhere, no one will blow it for you! May the God of all grace not allow us to be what Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of America calls, “great talkers and little doers”.

I have been reflecting (phản ánh) on what we should to do to escape from the brink (bờ vực) that a former United States envoy to Nigeria, John Campbell predicted (dự đoán) in his strange (2010/2013) book, ‘Nigeria: Dancing on the Brink’. I have come to the conclusion that what we need after all is not a strong political leader. We don’t need orators the iconic Benjamin Franklin calls “great talkers, little doers” too.

"Word on the wire" nghĩa là gì?

"Word on the wire" = lời nói trên dây -> nghĩa là thông tin được lan truyền giữa nhiều người, thường trong trường học hoặc nơi làm việc.

Ví dụ
The word on the wire is that Newcastle have met Strasbourg’s £13m valuation (định giá) and will begin talks over personal terms in the coming days, as Steve Bruce looks to reinforce (củng cố) a midfield currently being held together by the Longstaff brothers.

With a reputation for prioritising (ưu tiên) attractive, attacking football, the word on the wire in Spain is that Setien may well end up plying his trade (làm việc) with Barca, and sooner rather than later.

Word on the wire is that Idris Elba is going to be a dad — again! The British actor's girlfriend, Naiyana Garth, is pregnant with the couple's first child (Elba's second), sources confirm to Us Weekly.

Of course, the only way that we’ll actually see Mel Gibson and Tom Hardy in a new Mad Max film together is if a new Mad Max film is actually greenlit by Warner Bros. And there was some concern on that front earlier in the year as Mad Max: Fury Road, despite its absolutely stellar (xuất sắc) reviews, crawled its way to its ultimately satisfactory, but hardly scintillating (sắc sảo) box office total of $374.7 million (against a $150 million budget), the word on the wire is that a sequel is currently in development.

"All fur coat and no knickers" nghĩa là gì?

"All fur coat and no knickers" = (mặc) áo choàng lông nhưng không có đồ lót -> nghĩa là chỉ được cái mã bề ngoài.

Ví dụ
Judging the book by its cover, you’d think the library would be sprawling (trải dài) off the page. Instead, the library has for some time been “all fur coat and no knickers”; whittled down (cắt xén) to a budget line that grows with nothing to show.

THIS bombastic (khoa trương) Jamie Foxx action thriller (giật gân, ly kỳ) has potential, but is ultimately all fur coat and no knickers. If you could take a pill that would give you superpowers for five minutes, you’d take it, right?

This team from the Parc des Princes are the best footballing example of a team being all fur coat and no knickers —  although maybe this team are proving they do have some substance (tố chất) after all.

‘These have a lovely yeasty bakery bread smell. There’s not much fudge (kẹo mềm) inside, but I like the texture a lot. The flavour is all fur coat and no knickers – there’s no discernible flavour, and no sea salt.’

"For want of a better word" nghĩa là gì?

"For want of a better word" = (thật ra) muốn nói hay hơn -> được dùng khi người nói không thể tìm được câu phù hợp.

Ví dụ
If it’s warmth (ấm áp) and waterproofness you are after, you need to look for an overshoe (giày rộng) with some sort of treatment on the outer layer to repel the rain. These will still probably be made of neoprene but will look a bit more rubbery (for want of a better word).

It required one person at the helm (bánh lái) to have a real grasp on what it was that they wanted to achieve, a real and clear vision for what it would ultimately be, and real faith from Diego and I that that would be achieved. There were moments where we were like, ‘There is just no way this can work. It makes no sense. We’re completely lost.’ However, Tara would be there, and the producers said, ‘We’re watching the dailies (nhật báo). It’s working.’ There was a lot of reassurance because it felt so unnatural and, for want of a better word, clunky.

Nuclear armed North Korea, under the Kim dynasty (triều đại), remains well, for want of a better word, North Korea – predictably unpredictable. In between oscillating (lung lay) from threats of unleashing Nuclear Armageddon to sending soft feelers of reconciliation (giải hòa) to staving off (ngăn chặn) an implosion from within, the hermit kingdom continues to confound friends and foes alike.

Personally, there’s also a sense of excitement that comes with the whole thing, too. Like many young people, I know it’ll be a while until I’m able to receive the vaccine, but the idea that it’s coming – that, somewhere down the line, I’ll be able to live my life without fear of spreading the virus to a vulnerable family member and hug my friends without a second thought – feels, for want of a better word, incredible.

"A game in hand" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ryoji Iwata on Unsplash

"A game in hand" -> nghĩa là 'vẫn còn một trận chưa đá/đấu'.

Ví dụ
A fourth defeat in six Premier League games at Old Trafford this season could see the Red Devils finish the weekend eight points off the leaders, albeit with a game in hand.

Manchester United and Manchester City, separated by just a single point, both have a game in hand that could take them to within touching distance of the top of the Premier League. On paper, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Pep Guardiola are doing OK.

If Arsenal FC is fifth in the English Premier League table having played 10 out of 38 league matches and Tottenham Hotspur is in the number four spot 1 point ahead but having played 11 games already, it is then said that Arsenal has a game in hand compared to Tottenham.

"Mum's the word" nghĩa là gì?

lascot studio from Pexels

"Mum's the word" có mum là lặng im, làm câm lặng -> cụm từ này nghĩa là (yêu cầu ai) hãy giữ bí mật.

Ví dụ
Mum’s the word for inspirational (truyền cảm hứng) star of an inspirational night as sportswomen of the year are celebrated.

‘Mum's the word’ on man who fell to his death inside airport Westin hotel in Romulus. The Wayne County Airport Authority is releasing little information on the Nov. 27 death of a man at the Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport hotel in Romulus.

Trump still lets loose (thả rất nhiều) occasionally with an intensive barrage (phòng ngự) of nighttime tweets, but they are increasingly devoted to his delusory (bịp bợm) allegations about how the election was stolen. Mum’s the word on the coronavirus epidemic, which is now killing 3,000 Americans a day – similar to the number killed at Pearl Harbor in 1941 or in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Their failure to make such a demand gives the impression that attention to ethics (đạo đức) in the council is predicated (xác nhận, khẳng định) on who is the violator. If it’s someone with whom council members have a contentious (hay cà khịa, bất đồng) relationship, as many of them did with Evans and Orange, then it’s a swift boot. However, if it’s someone who is part of the circle, then everyone looks the other way and mum’s the word.

"A fat chance" nghĩa là gì?

“A fat chance” có fat là chậm chạp, trì độn -> từ này nghĩa là sự đen đủi/không may, không tin điều gì đó sẽ xảy ra.

Ví dụ
Don’t take a “fat chance” with your fertility (khả năng sinh sản) this festive season. During lockdown, we saw many people taking self-care seriously because of the much-needed benefits it provided for people’s mental and physical well-being.

England head coach Eddie Jones has specified that he wants 20 English players to make the tour, an endeavor (sự cố gắng) he believes will stand to the players ahead of the 2023 Rugby World Cup. There’ll be fat chance of that if Gatland picks a team anything like Warburton’s.

I do understand it – his ex was a piece of work who cheated on him and then took him to the cleaners – but I know it’ll be different with us. I don’t want a big white wedding – fat chance at the moment – but I want us to commit to each other properly and for us to feel like a proper family.

"Around the block" nghĩa là gì?

“Around the block” = quanh (quẩn) khu nhà -> nghĩa là người có kinh nghiệm trong cuộc sống hoặc lĩnh vực cụ thể.

Ví dụ
"The new hire is young, but she's been around the block. She was managing a whole department at a prominent Marketing firm before she came here."John said.

With nearly 150 professional kickboxing bouts in multiple promotions and tournaments (vòng thi đấu) under his belt, it's safe to say Thailand's Superbon Banchamek has been around the block.

“These guys are just top quality people and players, and then you look and see all the experienced guys who have been around the block. Our biggest strength is our collective (tập thể). We’d pretty much do anything for each other.”

The practice has existed for more than a century in some Cambodian villages, where residents like 64-year-old Ek Chan trust their ability to fend off evil spirits and disease.

James Aspell, 34, posted photos of his formal application to make his shuttered “400 Rabbits Tequila and Mezcal Cocktail Bar” in Nottingham an official place of meeting for religious worship (thờ phượng tôn giáo).

He was also shown smiling and giving the thumbs-up while mailing the form for the now-reverentially named Church of the Four Hundred Rabbits.

To get approved, he needs people to sign up and say they are part of his congregation (giáo đoàn) — telling Nottinghamshire Live that they can register as a “bunny believer” or “reverend (đại đức) of the righteous rabbits.”

“With places of worship allowed to open in all tiers we thought f–k it let’s start a religion!” he explained on Facebook to his new congregation, who would otherwise be barred under the UK’s strict lockdown rules, which would only allow him to serve takeout if he sold food.

...The lorry attendant (phụ lái xe tải) claimed that his lorry was stopped at a roadblock after exiting the Senawang toll plaza at about 2 pm.

“A policeman then asked the lorry driver and attendant to show a letter from their employer  (chủ lao động) allowing them to transport the goods, failing which they have to pay a fine… In the event they were unable to do so, they were told to hand over the onions,”
