"By and large" nghĩa là gì?

"By and large" -> nghĩa là 'nói chung', 'về tổng thể'.

Ví dụ
It’s always been strange that Trump, who will never be mistaken for a rigorous (chặt chẽ, nghiêm khắc) constitutionalist and who personalizes everything, has elevated a couple of hundred judges who, by and large, are deeply committed to the Constitution and feel no particular personal loyalty to him.

In the past, the Army had flagged overweight compared to its requirements which has also been addressed. “The Army wanted to lower the weight so they can carry it in the mountains. They wanted around 18 tonnes — by and large we are in that range,” the official said.

Service members’ ability to use social media also allows higher-ups, such as Maj. Gen. Tammy Smith and Maj. Gen. Patrick Donahoe, to listen to and respond to the concerns of their subordinates and the civilian population. Service members, interested civilians, national security academics and professionals, politicians, and journalists are now regularly interacting with one another on social media. This helps the greater population view service members as people beyond their military affiliation, which is key to healthy civilian-military relations. Especially in politically turbulent (hỗn loạn, bất an) times, it is important to remember that, by and large, we’re in this together, and social media provides that link.

"By all odds" nghĩa là gì?

"By all odds" -> nghĩa là hiển nhiên, hoàn toàn chắc chắn, không thể bàn cãi, không thể phủ nhận.

Ví dụ
He wrote a colleague that the “poverty and riot situation has gotten so bad that it is by all odds the number one problem for Control Data.

If we cannot develop a wise and sustainable way of using our resources, our posterity will be pushed towards cannibalism, by all odds.

Sadly, at the same time, there are others who will not be mourned, at least not for long, and we as Minnesota taxpayers are complicit. These are aborted babies. In 2018 alone there were 4,256 abortions (phá thai) funded by you from your state taxes. For 2019 and 2020 the data is not available, but by all odds the numbers have increased. This is indeed a “pandemic” by any reasonable measure. As a Minnesota taxpayer, I am deeply offended and if you believe that there is an inalienable right to life you should be too. It is time to eliminate tax-funded abortions.

"By all means" nghĩa là gì?

"By all means" -> nghĩa là chắc chắn/tất nhiên; nghĩa khác là bất chấp mọi giá/mọi cách có thể.

Ví dụ
In case you don’t have time to search for the coat to end all coats, we've done some of the legwork for you. If you already have 'The One', by all means, stick to it - we all need to be thinking about how much we consume.

I might mention, though, that debunked methods don’t necessarily mean a plant will quickly die outright (ngay lập tức). If you’re currently doing one of the methods frowned upon, but your plants are beating the odds, by all means keep doing what you’re doing. But given the opportunity, it’s best to avoid these practices.

It’s no coincidence that one of the most engaging encounters I had with a serious text all summer came at a cabin in a remote, mountain hamlet where getting internet meant walking three blocks to stand outside town hall. We may think we’ve advanced so much over ancient monks (thầy tu) in caves. But their ability to concentrate, to be present (evidenced by the writings they composed mentally, without word processors or an ability to edit) makes you wonder. If we’ve been invited to the assembly, by all means we should gather for the feast (leaving aside the issue of COVID restrictions on worship). But even when we come, the struggle remains, in our hearts and minds, to actually be present.

"By all accounts" nghĩa là gì?

"By all accounts" -> nghĩa là theo thông tin thu thập được; theo những gì mọi người nói.

Ví dụ
By all accounts, we can see a bright light at the end of the tunnel with the encouraging news that a vaccine against COVID-19, the menace that has just about made life miserable (nghèo khổ), will soon be available.

First of all, you can't help but feel for a kid like Austin Davis. By all accounts he's an extremely hard worker, a very humble kid, an excellent teammate, a very unselfish and helpful veteran (người kỳ cựu) and, on top of all that, a damn good big man.

As Nifty closed on 13,518 points and Sensex ended the day on 46,099 on Friday, Zee Business Managing Editor Anil Singhvi while analysing this rally said that Indian Stock Market stood strong on Friday despite a little slowdown in global market. Despite losing minor points early in the day, Indian equity benchmark (đối chuẩn) indices (chỉ số), Sensex and Nifty, ended the week higher for the sixth consecutive week on Friday. That is a magnificent performance by all accounts.

The victim said he drove away from McJunkin and McJunkin allegedly fired four more shots at the rear of the vehicle.

The victim said at this point he jumped out of the car (nhảy ra khỏi xe) and into the woods. He kept running and eventually had his sister go back to get his car. He said when she got to the cemetery, she found it on fire.

"Bit by bit" nghĩa là gì?

"Bit by bit" = từng tí một -> nghĩa là dần dần, từ từ.

Ví dụ
Hidden away in the heart of the Deep South, one of the nation’s greatest wildernesses is being destroyed, bit by bit, in a silent massacre (cuộc tàn sát).

A mother mentally, physically, emotionally gets involved in raising her children, she minutely checks everything starting from number of ounces (một chút, số lượng rất nhỏ) per feeding, changing diapers (tã lót), checking how many hours the kid has slept and bit by bit everything.

Bit by bit, politics began to restore the power of the wealthy, reducing their taxes while cutting government services to make up the revenue loss. Gross misjudgments in international affairs led to the pointless Vietnam War. Our interventions in the Middle East were, at bottom, a means of securing rights for American oil companies.

Ví dụ
“They told me I did a great job and all, and I’m always going to appreciate them for giving me the opportunity and drafting me,” Johnson said. "But it definitely kind of stung a little bit. But it was one of those things like I've just got to prove myself to someone else, and that’s fine by me.

"Once a whore, always a whore" nghĩa là gì?

"Once a whore, always a whore" = một lần làm gái, cả đời là đĩ -> nghĩa là một khi đã làm điều xấu xa, đồi bại hay trái đạo đức thì sẽ mãi thế.

Ví dụ
The hero does not judge prostitutes. In fact, he shows them kindness, refuses to judge and will do anything to help them out of their predicament. He rarely forms a romantic relationship with one, though, because – well, once a whore always a whore.

Meanwhile, Linda (Rachel Keller) and her friends are busy giggling over Linda’s bachelorette party (tiệc độc thân) plans. They joke about Betty still leaving messages on Dan and Linda’s answering machine. Linda reenacts (ban hành lại) a message, using Betty’s language and calling herself “the whore.” She toasts to herself, quoting Betty, “Once a whore, always a whore.”

The losses to the prostituted individual are limitless. They are limitless not only because they are innumerable (vô số) but also because there is no cap, no ceiling, no time-frame limit on when they will cease intruding into a woman’s life. There also are no socially accepted boundaries which a woman can erect between prostitution and herself. The common saying: ‘Once a whore always a whore’ makes reference to this. A woman may be a former prostitute of several years, like myself, who worries about the impact of her history on her child, or she may be a former prostitute decades older than me who worries about the teasing and bullying of her grandchildren.

"Do a roaring trade" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Bundo Kim on Unsplash

"Do a roaring trade" -> nghĩa là buôn bán/công việc kinh doanh rất thuận lợi.

Ví dụ
One of the most iconic (biểu tượng) car brands in the world continues to do a roaring trade in Ireland, with Blackwater Motors in Cork heading into 2021 offering test drives on the brand new ID-3.

In these grim (dữ dội), locked-down times, the idea has obvious appeal (hấp dẫn). When - finally - pubs and restaurants are free of this accursed (đáng nguyền rủa) virus, they will no doubt do a roaring trade. But looking at the data, I’m far less convinced (thuyết phục) by the argument that the economy will surf a tsunami of Covid savings.

Pre-lockdown – that’s post-spring lockdown and pre-autumn lockdown – it tends to do a roaring trade. Let’s both hope and assume it continues to do so once lockdown is lifted and people can resume to some sort of normality.

It’s pleasing to see this uplift (nâng lên) as it reinforces WA can do a roaring trade and it’s this sort of business activity that helps the local regional economy and contributes to WA’s recovery journey.

"Once the word gets out" nghĩa là gì?

"Once (the) word gets out" = một khi lời nói phát ra ngoài -> nghĩa là ngay khi mọi người bắt đầu tìm kiếm; hoặc ngay khi tin tức bắt đầu lan truyền.

Ví dụ
“Once the word gets out they were foxed by two girls,” implies that the only eyewitnesses, the gang and Betsy and Tracy, will either not tell of the hitchhiker (người đi nhờ xe), or did not see him.

“It’s a big crowd,” said Richard Patterson. “Once the word gets out. It’s getting more and more popular.” Those crowds can also still eat outside in San Mateo County. “Oh yeah, and that’s a big thing,” said Scott Sutton. “That place we were just at across the street, they were serving a lot of people. It was huge.”

“A lot of the vendors (người bán dạo) don’t have anything to do on Friday mornings, and they’d rather be doing something,” Smith said. “We were pretty busy here a while ago,” Smith said Friday morning. “I think it’s going to be a pretty good turnout.” Some of the vendors have a loyal following in St. Helena. Jess Arnsteen, culinary (thuộc bếp núc, nấu nướng) farm manager for Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch, hopes that will translate into a good crowd once the word gets out.

"A man can die but once" nghĩa là gì?

"A man can die but once" -> nghĩa là ai rồi cũng phải chết.

Ví dụ
“Well, that’s exactly what I feel, too,” replied Newton, “and here is my hand and heart to stand by you, my brave friend, to the last drop. Thank God, a man can die but once; and there is not so much in this life that a man need be afraid to leave it, especially when he is in the way of his duty.

[Pause] I don’t know. I mean, John was my age. Hal was a bit younger. It’s tough, and it’s so fucking grisly the way this happens. I have a sister in hospice in Florida. That’s age-appropriate, but still brutal. It’s what’s going on right now. I acted in Henry IV in boarding school, and Feeble says, “By my troth, I care not. A man can die but once. We owe God a death and let it go which way it will. He that dies this year is quit for the next.”

Muki sighed. “Lads, I am about to die,” he began. He was certain he was on the verge of a stroke, and the last thing he wanted was to flood his ailing innards with wine. And yet, Muki also knew he was at a gosh darn wedding and that weddings are specially charged, sacred days that temporarily reorganize the universe entirely around love and joyousness (sự vui mừng) and mirth (vui vẻ). Muki considered this, considered his glass, and pushed a great gust of air out of his weathered lungs. His lips formed that air into words: “So be it! A man can die but once!” And then Muki started to drink and drink. He drank until 2 in the morning. Then Muki asked to be carried to a bed, groaned once, and died. He was, the paper reported, “the merriest wedding guest of them all.”

"Doped to the gills" nghĩa là gì?

"Be doped to the gills" có dope là thuốc có hại, to the gills là đầy ắp, đầy ự -> cụm từ này nghĩa là phê thuốc, gần như tới mức rối loạn tâm trí.

Ví dụ
There’s Froome, who remains a lightning rod for controversy among naysayers despite emerging as the most successful grand tour rider of his generation. Whether it’s his sometimes awkward (yet highly effective) riding style that irks (làm phiền) the purists, or the incredulity (hoài nghi) among doubters who won’t believe anyone can win a grand tour without being doped to the gills, Froome, despite his Boy Scout demeanor and impeccable professionalism, oddly seems to draw the ire from a wide spectrum of the cycling public.

My old CSC jersey may have been the fatal (tai họa) attention but are things really that bad? That everyone who even acts like they’re into cycling over the mountains must be juiced up, doped to the gills, still taking the Smarties?

I no longer pay attention to professional cycling, save for a couple stages of the Tour each summer. I and everyone else watching shares the memory of Lance’s cover up. When I try to suspend (ngừng) my doubt and tune in, the thought still carousels through my mind: “I wonder who’s doped to the gills.”

Ethiopians and possibly the Kenyans doped to the gills. Some hide out and then race a handful of times and smash world records. More than elevated air methinks (đối với tôi)!

"Ply your trade" nghĩa là gì?

"Ply one's trade" -> nghĩa là làm việc.

Ví dụ
I’m not getting any younger and that’s usually the pathway of a professional rugby player, that you ply your trade here, you go as far as you can go and then look overseas (nước ngoài) for a different experience and culture.

If you're into dinosaur hunting, Ireland is one of the most frustrating (khó chịu) places to ply your trade. Not only is the island famous for not having any snakes, it also doesn't have any dinosaur fossils (hóa thạch) – at least, not until now.

And we ended up with a fantastically inventive (đầy sáng tạo) and fresh range of characters and ideas which Melissa Hardinge, Damian Kavanagh and Anne Gilchrist at the BBC allowed us to make. As long as we didn't swear they were happy. And I hope we've helped in a small way to encourage comedy writers and performers to realise children's television is a rich and rewarding arena in which to ply your trade.

It is in here where you must ply your trade, working the world with the Exo Stranger in order to take control of its power before Eramis the Kell of Darness places it on her Fallen forces.

"The inside dope" nghĩa là gì?

"The inside dope" có dope là tin riêng -> từ này nghĩa là thông tin không được phổ biến rộng rãi, thông tin mật, tin nội bộ.

Ví dụ
Their emergence (vấn đề nảy ra) is alarming because their high priests do not preach (thuyết giáo) peace and reconciliation. QAnon believers take their cues from a mysterious online source, purportedly a high-ranking government official with all the inside dope on the domestic threats to the American way of life.

The supposed proof? Enigmatic (bí ẩn) posts on anonymous (nặc danh) message boards from a “Q Clearance Patriot” who claims to have the inside dope on a coming “Storm” that will wash away this faction and purify (làm sạch) the country.

Exclusive! Here's all the inside dope from Priyanka Chopra - Nick Jonas Wedding. Keeping in sync with the theme of the nuptials (lễ cưới), the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur was decked up in white.

"Dunning–Kruger effect" nghĩa là gì?

ảo tưởng mình khôn... Photo by MayoFi on Unsplash.

At the company I helped start, Alpha Health, we use automation (tự động hóa) at the crossroads of machine learning (học máy) and healthcare. But it is automation with a human touch. We designed this system to be flexible (linh hoạt) enough to allow for the outlying events or functions that we haven't yet anticipated (chưa dự đoán được) — the unknown unknowns, if you will. It's essential to understand a bit about the Dunning-Kruger effect and the blind spots we all have as humans to grasp why this is significant.

In recent decades, psychologists (nhà tâm lý) have revealed that we are beholden to all sorts of biases (thiên kiến) and mental blind spots (điểm mù trí tuệ) that put a positive spin on our characters. In one study from the 1960s of drivers (tài xế) hospitalised (nhập viện) by car accidents (tai nạn ô tô), for instance, all judged their driving ability to be better than average. This “illusory superiority” (ảo tưởng tự tôn) bias has been demonstrated many times since. Indeed, it turns out that the worse we are at a particular task, the less likely we are to recognise our own incompetence – something known as the Dunning-Kruger effect.

At the same time, more individuals are trading stocks and options (ngày càng nhiều cá nhân giao dịch cổ phiếu và quyền mua). What’s driving this behavior?
I think there are a few things happening. First of all, we have the classic Dunning-Kruger effect, which predicts that people who are the most ignorant (ngu dốt) about something will be the least aware of their own ignorance. They have the highest sense of false confidence. Meanwhile, things like Robinhood [the zero-commission trading app] have made it easy to trade, and there’s been a huge marketing push that actually has coincided with Covid-19. I’m not a fan of these platforms, by the way, because I think they take advantage of (lợi dụng) people who have no idea what they’re doing and who might end up losing a lot of money. I also think that with so many things being out of our control, people see this as a way of reclaiming agency and being able to actually play with risks, but on their own terms, or so they think.

Tạm biệt Jakarta

tổng thống Joko Widodo tuyên bố Indonesia dời đô... tới đảo borneo...
-----

President Joko Widodo said the move was necessary (động thái cần thiết) because the burden (gánh nặng) on Jakarta was “too heavy”, but environmentalists (nhà môi trường) said the $33bn relocation (dời địa điểm) needed to be carefully handled (xử lý cẩn thận/chu đáo) or it would result in fleeing one ecological disaster (thảm họa hệ sinh thái) only to create another.

...As well as dire problems (vấn đề khốc liệt) of pollution and traffic congestion (tắc nghẽn giao thông), Jakarta suffers from severe subsidence (lún trầm trọng), which makes the coastal city (thành phố duyên hải) extremely vulnerable (cực kỳ dễ bị tổn thương) to rising sea levels (mực nước biển dâng cao).

Poor urban planning (quy hoạch đô thị yếu kém) on land that was originally swamp (đầm lầy), along with the unregulated draining of aquifers (tầng ngậm nước), has left 40% of the city under sea level. The worst affected neighbourhoods are reportedly sinking 10-20cm per year – one of the fastest rates in the world.

...The relocation aims to ease the pressure on Jakarta by moving its administrative functions about 1,000km to Kalimantan, which is the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo (which is also shared with Malaysia and Brunei.) Jakarta will continue to be a commercial and financial centre (trung tâm thương mại và tài chính), and the majority of its nearly 10 million residents are likely to stay.

When did China pivot from seeing the internet as a US-generated threat (mối nguy) to something it could use to discipline (kỷ luật, kỷ cương) and punish  (trừng phạt) its own population (người dân)?
It’s not just the internet, it’s technology in general. If you go back to even the late 1970s and early 80s, the way the Chinese Communist party (CCP) talks about technology is as a tool of social management. It’s a way of not only coercive (ép buộc, cưỡng bức) control, but also sort of cooperative control where you participate in your own management. It’s this idea of shaping the environment, shaping how people think, how they’re willing to act before they even know they’re making a choice. That’s the party’s idea.

When did that develop into what is called the social credit system?
Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin spoke about this in 2000. He said we need a social credit system to merge rule by law and rule by virtue. I don’t see it as different from the way Hannah Arendt describes how regimes attempt to make the law inseparable from ethics in The Origins of Totalitarianism.

...The most egregious example of this surveillance technology would be in Xinjiang for controlling the Uighur [Muslim] population?
The most visibly coercive forms of what the party is doing are unfolding in Xinjiang. It’s a virtual police state. There are QR codes on people’s doors for when the party goes in to check on who is in (có mã qr ở cửa để người của đảng vào kiểm tra ai ở trong nhà). Some researchers have found that if someone leaves through the back door instead of the front door, that can be considered suspicious behaviour (đi cửa sau thay vì cửa trước cũng bị coi là hành vi đáng ngờ).

Chess has enjoyed a huge boom (bùng nổ lớn) in internet play this year as in-person events have moved online and people stuck at home have sought new hobbies (sở thích mới). But with that has come a significant new problem: a rise in the use of powerful chess calculators to cheat on a scale reminiscent (làm nhớ lại, hồi tưởng) of the scandals that have dogged cycling (đua xe đạp) and athletics. One leading ‘chess detective’ said that the pandemic (đại dịch) was “without doubt creating a crisis (khủng hoảng)”.

The problems are not confined to (không giới hạn ở) chess, with similar issues reported in poker, bridge and even backgammon, but they are perhaps most disruptive (mang tính chất phá vỡ/phá bĩnh/phá hoại) for a game with a reputation for gravitas (vẻ trang trọng trong cử chỉ) and class (sự thanh nhã, thanh cao).

“The pandemic has brought me as much work in a single day as I have had in a year previously,” said Prof Kenneth Regan, an international chess master and computer scientist whose model is relied on by the sport’s governing body, Fide, to detect (phát hiện) suspicious (tỏ ra có sự nghi ngờ, ám muội, mập mờ) patterns of play. “It has ruined my sabbatical.”

Chess.com, the world’s biggest site for online play, said it had seen 12 million new users this year, against 6.5 million last year. The cheating rate has jumped from between 5,000 and 6,000 players banned each month last year to a high of almost 17,000 in August.

Tesco, Lidl, Asda, McDonald’s, Nando’s and other high street retailers all source chicken fed on soya supplied by trading behemoth (gã khổng lồ thương mại) Cargill, the US’s second largest private company (công ty tư nhân lớn thứ hai mỹ). The combination of minimal protection for the Cerrado – a globally important carbon sink (đầm lầy) and wildlife habitat (môi trường sống động vật hoang dã) – with an opaque supply chain (chuỗi cung ứng mù mờ) and confusing labelling systems (hệ thống dán nhãn gây khó hiểu), means that shoppers may be inadvertently (tình cờ, không cố ý) contributing to its destruction.

...So where, exactly, is this soya originating from? Avara’s supplier, Cargill, buys soya from many suppliers in the Cerrado, at least nine of which have been involved in recent land clearance. Analysis by the consultancy Aidenvironment of the land owned or used by these companies since 2015 found 801 sq km of deforestation – an area equivalent to 16 Manhattans. It also detected 12,397 recorded fires.

The Brazilian government has steadily (đều đặn) relaxed controls on deforestation (nới lỏng kiểm soát về phá rừng) – and sometimes tacitly (ngầm, không nói ra, ngụ ý) encouraged it – over the past decade, most notably by the relaxation of the Forest Code in 2012.

The UK imports 700,000 tonnes of raw soya beans each year, many from the Cerrado, It also buys almost three times this quantity of processed soya feed, the majority from Argentina.

The decision hammers another nail in the coffin (đóng đinh vào cỗ quan tài) of Trump’s increasingly desperate effort (nỗ lực ngày càng tuyệt vọng) to subvert (lật đổ, phá hoại) the will of the people (ý nguyện của người dân) and deny Joe Biden the presidency.

The suit filed by Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general, sought to invalidate (vô hiệu hóa) the results in four swing states (bang dao động), asking the court to extend the deadline for election certification so alleged voting irregularities could be investigated.

Felicity Lawrence ở tờ the guardian (tháng 3/2019) quy phong trào "uống sữa là yêu nước" ở china là nguyên nhân tác động môi trường trên thế giới, như nuôi bò tạo ra phát thải khí nhà kính, cạn kiệt nguồn nước, phá rừng trồng đậu v.v...

When the People’s Republic of China was born in 1949, its national dairy herd was said to consist of a mere 120,000 cows. Yet today, China is the third-largest milk producer in the world (sản xuất sữa lớn thứ 3 thế giới), estimated to have around 13m dairy cows, and the average person has gone from barely drinking milk at all to consuming about 30kg of dairy produce a year.

...Now the global impact (tác động toàn cầu) of China’s ever-expanding dairy sector (ngành sữa ngày càng mở rộng) is causing concern in other countries. Dairy farming requires access to vast quantities of fresh water: it takes an estimated 1,020 litres of water to make one litre of milk. But China suffers from water scarcity (khan hiếm nước), and has been buying land and water rights abroad, as well as establishing large-scale processing factories (thành lập các nhà máy chế biến quy mô lớn) in other countries.

Farmed animals are also one of the most significant causes of man-made climate change (biến đổi khí hậu). Livestock currently account for about 14.5% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions (phát thải khí nhà kính), more than the entire global transportation sector (ngành giao thông vận tải). Cattle account for more than two-thirds of those livestock emissions. Ruminants (động vật nhai lại) have a disproportionate impact because their digestion releases vast quantities of methane, a particularly potent greenhouse gas, and their excreta (phân) produces nitrous oxide. On top of that, large areas of forest are being cleared to make more land available for crops to feed farm animals, releasing carbon dioxide. China already imports 60% of the total volume of soyabeans traded worldwide, to make the high-protein feed it needs. Its demand for soya is a major driver of deforestation of the Amazon and Brazilian savanna (hoang mạc, thảo nguyên). Delivering milk across long distances to urban supermarkets produces yet more emissions.

...if the additional milk to meet demand in China were mostly imported, we would have to find two new countries the size of Ireland (diện tích đất bằng 2 lần nước ireland) and give them over completely to producing feed just for cows milked either in or for China.

One per cent of the world’s farms operate 70% of crop fields (cánh đồng hoa màu), ranches (trại nuôi gia súc) and orchards (vườn cây ăn quả), according to a report (báo cáo) that highlights (nhấn mạnh) the impact (tác động) of land inequality (bất bình đẳng đất) on the climate and nature crises.

...Taking the rising value of property (giá trị tài sản) and the growth of landless populations (dân số ko sở hữu đất) into account for the first time, the report calculates land inequality is 41% higher than previously believed.

...Landlessness was lowest in China and Vietnam, and highest in Latin America, where the poorest 50% of people owned just 1% of the land.

Asia and Africa have the highest levels of smallholdings, where human input tends to be higher than chemical and mechanical factors, and where time frames are more likely to be for generations rather than 10-year investment cycles. Worldwide, between 80% and 90% of farms are family or smallholder-owned. But they cover only a small and shrinking part of the land and commercial production.

Over the past four decades (since 1980s), the biggest shift from small to big was in the United States and Europe, where ownership is in fewer hands and even individual farmers work under strict contracts (hợp đồng hà khắc) for retailers (bán lẻ), trading conglomerates (tập đoàn thương mại) and investment funds (quỹ đầu tư).

Ward said these financial arrangements are now spreading to the developing world, which is accelerating (tăng tốc) the decline of soil quality (giảm chất lượng đất), the overuse (sử dụng quá mức) of water resources (nguồn nước), and the pace of deforestation (tốc độ phá rừng).

3 người giàu nhất thế giới Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk và Bill Gates đóng thuế thu nhập bằng…0

Tesl TSLA -2.7%a CEO Elon Musk has moved his primary residence from California to Texas, according to reports on Tuesday, which means the three richest people in American—Musk, Amazon AMZN +0.5% CEO Jeff Bezos and Microsoft MSFT +1.3% cofounder Bill Gates—now all reside in states that don’t collect income tax (thuế thu nhập).

Musk’s move was anticipated (dự đoán trước), following reported rumors  (tin đồn) from his friends and associates that the Lone Star State (bang ngôi sao cô đơn) would become his next home. This summer, he relocated his private foundation to the city of Austin. Musk, who is worth just shy of $140 billion, previously clashed with California officials over the state’s coronavirus restrictions (hạn chế đi lại vì covid), going so far as to sue Alameda County in May and threaten to move his company out of the state after its factory wasn’t allowed to reopen.

...Washington and Texas are two of nine U.S. states that don’t collect income tax. The rest are: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wyoming. The Tax Foundation, a leading nonprofit, notes that Tennessee and New Hampshire still tax interest (lãi cho vay) and dividends (cổ tức), but the latter is scheduled to phase out this tax in 2025.

“It's quite possible [California] is on the wrong (sai lầm) side of the Laffer Curve (đường cong laffer),” Arnold wrote on Twitter, referencing the economic theory (lý thuyết kinh tế) that supposes tax revenues will fall if governments set rates too high and can increase if rates are lowered.

"Fall into the hands of" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Erico Marcelino on Unsplash

"Fall into the hands of" -> nghĩa là rơi vào tay/lọt vào tay (ai).

Ví dụ
It has been that way since the beginning of time. Even David in the book of II Samuel 24: 13-14 said, "I am in great distress (kiệt sức). Please let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies (lòng nhân từ) are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man."

However, these mobile devices use cloud services for data storage, file sharing and backup, making it more vulnerable to security breaches (vi phạm bảo mật). Besides, stolen or lost mobile devices that fall into the hand of a hacker could result in data breaches.

The Steelers may have struck gold again with the 2020 2nd round selection Chase Claypool. No one doubted (không ai nghi ngờ) he would benefit the Steelers tremendously (rất nhiều). Now, after two weeks, 31 other NFL teams might regret they allowed him to fall into the hand of the Steelers. What he can do for the Steelers should scare the daylights out of the rest of the NFL.

"Old hand at" nghĩa là gì?

"Old hand at" -> nghĩa là người có kinh nghiệm.

Ví dụ
The away fighter (võ sĩ sân khách) won’t mind roughing it up (tấn công thô bạo), and he’s an old hand at the rabbit punch, the dig to the kidneys, and he’s not above hitting an opponent when they’re down.

Despite being only 12 years old, Emily Booth is something of an old hand at hospital emergency departments (ED) for children. This eloquent (tài hùng biện) girl, who lives in Brighton, was on one of her regular holidays to Cork in August where her mother Noelle O’Riordan is from.

Of course, the senior quarterback (tiền vệ) is an old hand at this kind of stuff. He’s starred for all three of Mart’s state championship teams since he’s been in high school, and can’t wait to try to make it four in a row when the Panthers (14-0) face Windthorst at 7 p.m. Wednesday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

With lockdown, hundreds of parents and teaching staff currently using the books were told they could not bring them into school as, by their nature (bản chất), they get passed from hand to hand. Therefore, Donna has spent months creating an app which also provides a digital version of the book.
