"Off the boil" nghĩa là gì?

"Off the boil" = ra khỏi điểm sôi -> nghĩa là không được tốt, linh hoạt hoặc thành đạt như trước nữa, không còn ở đỉnh cao phong độ nữa.

Ví dụ
I see why he’s continuing to get starts as he works very hard as a Mourinho-esque defensive winger, but he was a passenger offensively in this match. He’s not contributing (cống hiến) much apart from defense, and that’s where Spurs really needed the extra help especially in a match where Sonny was off the boil. Call this 2.76 stars, really.

When most men go off the boil, Gordon Ramsay turned up the heat, completing the hellish (khủng khiếp) Ironman at Kona in Hawaii in just over 14 hours in 2013. Six years later, at 52, he welcomed his fifth child and is now at the age when his father died of a heart attack.

Of course, if you’re wondering who the favourite is, you mustn’t know your darts at all! Don’t worry, we are here to clue you in. It’s ‘The Green Machine’ Michael van Gerwen! Under normal circumstances we would be talking about Mighty Mike being an almost unbackable frontrunner for the tournament he’s captured three times in this career (2014, 2017, 2019). But, MVG has been uncharacteristically (khác thường) off the boil in 2020.

Everton have gone off the boil after a flying start but still have the players to hurt Chelsea if Lampard’s players are not fully focused.

“If the worse comes to the worst” nghĩa là gì?

“If the worst comes to the worst” -> nghĩa là trong trường hợp xấu nhất.

Ví dụ
There are no plans to switch to (chuyển sang) online learning at this time, but board officials say they’re prepared if worse comes to worst. The first 1,500 Chromebooks to arrive in the province are on the ground in Labrador and will be delivered to students once they are configured (định hình) week.

"The prime minister should have dissolved (giải tán) the House of Representatives and held a snap general election when his approval ratings were high, right after he formed his Cabinet (nội các). If worse comes to worse, there might be an LDP leadership election before (Suga's term as party president ends in) September next year."

It could take shape as a platform release — a one-week qualifying (tiêu chuẩn) run, possibly only in the area surrounding New York City. If worse comes to worst, it could end up being limited to a virtual cinema platform, and it might: Southern California theaters are already closed, and the New York region could follow suit.

“A stroke of luck” nghĩa là gì?

“A stroke of luck” -> nghĩa là may mắn bất ngờ.

Ví dụ
Stuck in Vietnam a stroke of luck. Actually, it’s safer here. Timothy Bandors, another American, has a very different experience of Covid-19. He chose to stay back in Vietnam on safety considerations.

A Stroke Of Luck Boosts Oxford/AZ’s “Vaccine For The World”. AstraZeneca's research head admits (thừa nhận) that the half dose approach was a lucky mistake – but one that could boost the vaccine's effectiveness and supplies. The US regulator may not be persuaded, however.

The stroke of luck that led to Nottingham's Jonathan Van-Tam helping country through a pandemic. Nottingham's own Professor Jonathan Van-Tam was plunged into the spotlight at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. As one of England’s three Deputy Chief Medical Officers, he swiftly developed a reputation (danh tiếng) for his no-nonsense (thẳng thắn) responses to questions about the developing pandemic.

"Pussyfoot" nghĩa là gì?

"Pussyfoot" nghĩa là người hành động thận trọng.

Ví dụ
The New Zealand government doesn’t like rising house prices. It is putting pressure on the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to take into account housing as part of its remit (khỏi phải chịu thuế). It’s a pussyfoot approach. The really effective way to bring down house prices is to increase stamp duty on the sale of new and existing homes.

Out  of the blue, Vice President Agnew spoke up. It was all "pussyfooting," he said. If the sanctuaries (mật khu cộng sản) needed to be cleaned out, then the U.S. should get on with the job. Both Fish Hook and Parrot's Beak should  be attacked  and  done  right. Nixon,  who hated  to seem  less tough than  his advisers, was taken aback.

The owner of a local coffee shop is catching flak for criticizing (chỉ trích) Mayor G.T. Bynum’s handling of Oklahoma’s phased-in business reopening plan as a “pussyfoot response.” “First of all, my criticism was not intended as name-calling. I used the word, ‘pussyfoot’ to describe how I saw the mayor’s handling of the reopening of Tulsa businesses. Pussyfoot, by definition, means ‘to act in a cautious or non committal way,’” wrote Franklin, who signed the statements “your roastmaster.”

Magnificent Christmas party <3. Photo by Ibrahim Boran on Unsplash

"No expense is spared" = không để dành lại khoản (tiền) nào -> nghĩa là chi nhiều tiền đủ để (sự kiện, lễ cưới, buổi tiệc v.v...) hoành tráng, xa hoa.

Ví dụ
A bacchanalian night, where the champagne and dresses flow gold, and no expense is spared. A riot (bạo lạc) of hedonistic (sự khoái lạc), epicurean delight (vui sướng tột độ).

Iconic (mang tính biểu tượng), unequalled fidelity (độ trung thực không so sánh được), perfect at birth, flawless (hoàn mỹ). An exclusive and unparalleled example of what can be done when no expense is spared. Driven (thúc đẩy) only by perfection.

No expense is spared when treatment is required, either. According to Business Insider, President Donald Trump’s stint at the presidential suite of Walter Reed Medical after being diagnosed (chẩn đoán) with COVID-19 resulted in a hefty (khủng) US$650,000 bill.

"Enough and some to spare" -> nghĩa là dư thừa.

Ví dụ
If you don't stop her, grandma will keep refilling your plate because she made enough and some to spare.

Some developers learned the hard way that pricing an app too high, or just slapping a price onto an app that does almost nothing will not pave the way to success. In contrast, others learned coding the hard way, and the benefits of their strivings were enough and some to spare.

Don’t be stingy (keo kiệt). The average roll of dental floss (chỉ nha khoa) contains 120 yards—that’s longer than a football field! So, tear off enough and some to spare. Drs. Lee recommend using about 18 inches. This way you’ll be able to use a clean section of floss as you advance from one pair of teeth to the next. You can wind the excess from either end around your forefingers or middle fingers on both hands; then release from the finger on one hand and take up on the other.

"Be going spare" nghĩa là gì?

"Be going spare" có spare là dự trữ/dự phòng (cho lúc khẩn cấp) -> cụm từ này nghĩa là có sẵn để lấy/yêu cầu.

But they are in need of more material, and are appealing for anyone to can help to get in touch. Mr Kirkup said: “The group needs fabric that might be going spare in people’s homes."

The cargo planes are not quite being loaded yet. But within the next five years, it is a fair bet that some new vaults will be needed in Frankfurt and some space will be going spare in New York and London.

Hangovers aside, downsizing would paint an optimistic picture in the full-sized world too. All that food and land that downsized people no longer need? It’ll now be going spare, thus everything will become really cheap. Everyone benefits.

"Tall, dark, and handsome" nghĩa là gì?

"Tall, dark, and handsome" = cao, rám nắng và đẹp trai -> nghĩa là những tiêu chuẩn mà phụ nữ muốn nam giới có.

Ví dụ
Bill was born at home in Spiceland, to Charles Gene Lacy and Evangeline Glidewell Lacy. He attended elementary, junior high and high school in Spiceland, graduating in 1958, a little late due to having rheumatic (thấp khớp) fever when he was young. He grew to be 6'5" tall, dark and handsome.

He is tall, dark and handsome, with soulful (có hồn) brown eyes and a luxurious mane (tóc bờm) of rust-colored hair. He is caring, affectionate and steadfast. He turns heads and lights up eyes whenever he strolls into a room.

While most romances specify (chỉ rõ) their protagonists’ hair and eye color, there’s typically a scrim of haziness (mơ hồ) about their exact appearance. That haziness allows the reader to project their own particular preferences onto the love interest. Tall, dark, and handsome means different things to different people, after all.

His classic, tall-dark-and-handsome leading man good looks and the sexualized nature of the film made him the new prime target for tabloids (báo), gossip magazines and hordes (đám) of fan girls (and women)— he became the man that your wife and her friends were talking about in what would be best described as ‘locker room talk’.

"Facts are stubborn things" nghĩa là gì?

"Facts are stubborn things" = sự thật là những thứ cứng đầu -> nghĩa là sự thật bất di bất dịch, không thể thay đổi.

Ví dụ
In the words of John Adams, “Facts are stubborn things”, and while I believe allegations of voter fraud (lừa đảo) should always be investigated, I have learned through research and speaking to my colleagues that true voter fraud is isolated (cô lập) and infrequent (hiếm khi xảy ra), as confirmed by FBI Director Christopher Wray, and recently, Attorney General William Barr.

Facts are stubborn things because they are attached to reality as it is, not as we wish it to be. In her book Practical Mysticism, Evelyn Underhill, author (tác giả) of two classics, Mysticism and Worship, wrote: “Mysticism (đạo thần bí) is the art of union with Reality.” By reality she meant not just the Divine Reality but the everyday reality too. The two are not detached from one another. That is a good definition of true religion: the art of union with reality.

Facts are stubborn things. The ODA’s CAFO-permitting program contains a huge loophole (lỗ hổng) that allows CAFO owners to completely circumvent (làm hỏng) all the other rules by simply selling the manure (phân bón) to third-party brokers.

You’re insane. Bob is correct, whether you like it or not. Facts are stubborn things, aren’t they? With many years of experience in international distribution (phân phối), I do not agree with it, but that’s the reality.

"In bad sorts" nghĩa là gì?

"In bad sorts" -> nghĩa là cáu kỉnh, khó chịu, không vui.

Ví dụ
Fabien Wardezki and Sandra Kalemba will be leaving New Zealand in bad sorts after having their luggage (hành lý) and passports stolen. The two were planning on flying to Hawaii, but will now be forced to return home.

"I don't do well with losing, I don't sleep at night," Rowland said."It puts me in bad sorts." He said he is happy with the two recent additions in guards EJ Gallup and Shea Bromirski, saying both can help on the offensive end. But neither of them own a 6-10 frame that Rowland dearly covets (thèm muốn).

Others close to the Favre family have claimed Favre was in bad sorts over not being selected by Dancing with the Stars. Favre claimed the producers of Dancing with the Stars just didn't seem to have any interest in him, and this was just way too much to take for the Super Bowl hero's larger-than-life ego.

The decision to shut down or sell a company is a nerve-racking (khó khăn và khiến người đưa ra quyết định phải lo lắng nhiều), white-knuckled (lo lắng, hoảng sợ) process down to the last minute. The process is all-consuming, and leaves many in bad sorts. While one would assume that it would be tough for employees and founders to move on to the next opportunity, once there’s finality, it can be a lot easier to move on.

A new ad from the anti-Trump Republicans at Project Lincoln mocks (chế giễu) President Donald Trump for letting campaign chief Brad Parscale get rich at his expense.

Post-pandemic, many employers that watched insurers get rich at their expense are going to follow the example of their self-insured brethren—and opt out of the traditional insurance market, too.

"Our research has shown us that in many towns and cities across Britain, people are being forced to work against their will, living in extreme poverty and in fear for their safety, all so ruthless criminal gangs can get rich at their expense."

"Laugh at her expense" nghĩa là gì?

"Laugh at one's expense" -> nghĩa là cười nhạo.

Ví dụ
It wasn't the first time during the episode where Allison was the butt of the joke, as the Today show's graphics department seemed to have a laugh at her expense.

They cut over to Sylvia Jeffreys who couldn't help but get involved in the fun, joking: "What the duck, you guys?" They all laugh at his expense, and it's something that has never happened during one of the Simpson boy's infamous crank calls.

Sandilands said he is happy with people having a laugh at his expense. "If you are that much an ego lunatic (kẻ điên rồ) that you can’t see you own flaws (khuyết điểm) and faults and have a laugh at yourself, and be self-deprecating (tự ti), then this is not the business for you."

"Live at his expense" nghĩa là gì?

"Live at his expense" -> nghĩa là sống ăn bám vào ai.
Ví dụ
The only thing I didn't do again was to live at your expense.

You are fed up (chán ngấy) with the authorities and and its leaders. You are fed up with the crooks (kẻ gian) and thieves who live at your expense.

He's on welfare. He lives at our expense, we pay taxes and he doesn't do a fucking thing. Twice a month he goes to the clean, spacious welfare office at 1515 Broadway and receive his checks.

If you can offer your tenant (người thuê) somewhere else to live at your expense during the time of the repair, then this seems reasonable. If the tenant suggests a hotel or other accommodation, which is what an insurer (công ty bảo hiểm) often provides in similar situations, then you will have to reach some kind of compromise (thỏa thuận) if you want to get on with getting the work done.

America says "wants to dominate the energy market, damn the expense about oil prices". The US official says the country's goal is to gain dominance in the energy market, no matter what happens to oil prices.

"Messi will be out of contract with Barca at the end of this season, how great it would be if he called and expressed his wish (bày tỏ nguyện vọng) to join Napoli. The club has hung number 10, but Messi definitely wants to pay tribute (tôn vinh) to Maradona by dedicate (cống hiến) to the club for 1-2 years and damn the expense". Boateng said.

"Pad your expense account" nghĩa là gì?

"bao gái" không tính vào tiền công ty nhé... Photo by Matt W Newman on Unsplash.

"Pad your expense account" có pad là nhồi nhét những thứ thừa -> cụm từ này nghĩa là dùng tiền công ty cho chi tiêu cá nhân.

Ví dụ
Claim more money than spent, add false expenses. How can I pad my expense account if I don't have receipts?

Like inflating (thổi phồng) income tax deductions, padding expense account reports is something everyone knows is wrong, but many do anyway.
Have you been padding your expense account, Johnson? You're going to have to explain some of these mysterious out-of-state charges.

Of those who do pad their expense reports, 39% did not label it “fraud” in the criminal sense if the exaggerated (tăng quá mức) amount was 10% or less of the total.

"Not a bad sort" nghĩa là gì?

"Not a bad sort" = không phải loại tệ đâu -> nghĩa là nhìn chung không phải loại người cáu kỉnh, xấu tính, khó chịu.

Ví dụ
The thing about Alex is, he's not a bad sort of fellow, nor is he insensitive (không nhạy bén) to other people's feelings. Raiff gives us enough context of his life so we understand his reluctance (miễn cưỡng) to turn away from his family, with whom he's so emotionally close.

Muscat’s successor, the present prime minister, actually defends Muscat, saying that he’s not a bad sort. Unlike Konrad Mizzi, who has now been booted out (đuổi, tống cổ) of the Labour parliamentary (nghị viện) group.

“You’re not a bad sort,” she continues, looking at me sappily (hạnh phúc). Blankly. Her smile is turning generic and there’s a familiar rush (luồng) of delight and disgust coursing through me. “Nice of you to say, darlin’,” I say, pushing away the bad feeling, and she giggles again. “You’re a hoot.” She snorts.

The Home Office's first view was to refuse (từ chối) his request for nationality in 1952, but senior figures at the Home Office decided that driving offences (vi phạm), and there were almost 40, were not sufficient grounds for refusal. Joe was pleased to learn he was described informally by one official as 'not a bad sort of fellow'."
