"Go into the red" nghĩa là gì?

"Go into the red" = "be in the red" -> nghĩa là mắc nợ (công ty, cá nhân).

Ví dụ
Ethereum investors go into the red with more than 6% in losses.

The report suggests that after the loss of €39.9 million recorded as of 30 June 2019 and the loss of €19.2 million in 2018, the Bianconeri will be in the red.

Bursa Malaysia continued to be in the red when the market resumed at mid-afternoon today, driven by foreign outflow (chảy mạnh ra) in lower liners (nhóm sàn thấp hơn).

Government books are now expected to go into the red this financial year with a forecast deficit (số tiền thiếu hụt) of $900 million, down from a Budget (ngân sách) forecast surplus (số dư) of $1.3 billion.

"Red-headed stepchild" nghĩa là gì?

"Red-headed stepchild" = đứa con ghẻ tóc đỏ -> nghĩa là đứa trẻ bị đối xử tàn tệ (tóc đỏ thì hiếm, và được sinh ra trong gia đình bố mẹ tóc không đỏ nên bị coi là con riêng trong vụ ngoại tình).

Ví dụ
I had the most significant relationship with Hunter probably in the last ten years. I’m his red-headed stepchild.

The red-headed stepchild of Best Picture Oscar winners, 1984’s “Amadeus” takes two niche indulgences - classical music and costume drama — and makes them sexy, silly and murderous.

Although Tamra Judge swears she left The Real Housewives of Orange County on her own terms, she's also claimed she was fired, characteristically talking out of both sides of her mouth. Tamra added, "It's kind of like a death. I've been in the Bravo family for 12 years. I'm a red-headed stepchild now."

"Red in tooth and claw" nghĩa là gì?

"Red in tooth and claw" = răng và móng vuốt nhuốm đỏ -> nghĩa là dùng chiến thuật tàn nhẫn trong xung đột, cạnh tranh.

Ví dụ
There’s such a thing as a politician (chính trị gia) red in tooth and claw; a blistering (làm phồng) orator (nhà hùng biện) temperamentally (thất thường) suited to the most cut-and-thrust aspects of political life.

Queensland politics may not seem cerebral (não = quan trọng) but nor does much of Australian politics. What makes the state different from others is a wonderful, red in tooth and claw combativeness. Opponents aim low and below the belt and often past the statistics.

Anyone who doubts that such a thing can happen in a country committed to capitalism (chủ nghĩa tư bản), red in tooth and claw, had better read about the break-up of Standard Oil a century ago. Now similar statutory (luật định) intervention (can thiệp) is being discussed by the European Union (Liên minh Châu Âu), where proposals include forcing Big Tech to sell subsidiaries (công ty con).

"As red as a poppy" nghĩa là gì?

"As red as a poppy" = đỏ như cây anh túc -> nghĩa là mặt ửng đỏ vì xấu hổ, tức giận hay vấn đề sức khỏe.

Ví dụ
The clock tower was as red as a poppy, glowing bright in the early hours of the morning.

I used to turn as red as a poppy when I happened to meet the eye of some spectator (khán giả).

Sometimes they’re disguised as compliments, at which point I go as red as a poppy and wish the ground would open up and swallow me.

She had suddenly become as red as a poppy, and said no more. He did not know what to reply, for he was happy and disappointed at the same time. He should love her less, certainly, if he knew that her conduct was light, but then it would be so charming, so delicious to have a little flirtation (tán tỉnh).

"Better dead than red" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Fred Moon on Unsplash

"Better dead than red" có red là người ủng hộ cách mạng, người ủng hộ các chính sách cấp tiến -> cụm từ này nghĩa là khẩu hiệu phản đối Đảng Cộng sản thời Chiến tranh lạnh (được biểu thị bằng màu đỏ).

Ví dụ
After several days of anti-Green posts, on Sunday, the page published, and then swiftly deleted, a post that began with the words "BETTER DEAD THAN RED".

"Better dead than red" … said Chris Matthews. The MSNBC host went into a protracted monologue (cuộc độc thoại kéo dài) after the Democratic (Đảng dân chủ) debate in New Hampshire Friday night.

But the messages, which include "America First" and "Better Dead Than Red," are code for for white supremacists (những người ủng hộ thuyết cho rằng người da trắng là ưu việt), Seattle police said Wednesday.

"It's pretty easy to look at all the stickers that have gone around campus for the Proud Boys, that have swastikas (hình chữ vạn, chữ thập ngoặc) on them, that say Patriot Front, that say ‘better dead than red,’" Gates said. I mean, take down those stickers and make a statement that says this is not acceptable.

"Not lay a finger on" nghĩa là gì?

"Not lay a finger on (someone/something)” -> nghĩa là không "đụng tay" (đụng chân) đến ai (đánh, làm tổn thương họ).

Ví dụ
The 73-year-old mayor responded to the allegations (cáo buộc) in a news conference of his own on Monday. "I can declare that I have never laid a finger on Shoko Arai," Kuroiwa said at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan in Tokyo.

Father Felix questioned the BBC's motifs in singling out Korindo in its news report, "The parish (giáo xứ)  also has a forest next to Korindo's operational area, which several untrustworthy (không đáng tin cậy) companies have tried to lay their fingers on.

He confirmed (xác nhận) that Alex had never previously ‘laid a finger’ on him, and he had never done anything to cause him to be in fear. Asked why he took the wrench (cờ-lê) with him, he said: “I thought it would show Alex I was serious about not wanting to pay anymore.

“Not my circus, not my monkeys” nghĩa là gì?

“Not my circus, not my monkeys” = không phải rạp xiếc, không phải khỉ của tôi -> nghĩa là không phải chuyện của tôi nên tôi không muốn xen vào.

Ví dụ
Amidst the controversy (tranh cãi), Shaughnessy posted a now-deleted Facebook post about the dispute containing the phrase: ‘not my circus, not my monkeys’. Shaughnessy removed the post after a member of the Jesus College MCR Committee suggested to Shaughnessy that the phrase could be triggering for black students.

During the investigation, others corroborated (làm chứng) Moore’s allegations that Beare would regularly racially (chủng tộc) profile and target Black student groups trying to plan events on campus. When asked to assist with events organized primarily by Black students Beare would state, “Not my circus, not my monkeys,” according to the lawsuit.

There is an unlovely 20-second gap, in the parenting experience, between any given negative event and a sense of solidarity (tính đoàn kết) kicking in: the quick thrill of “I’m all right, Jack”. Toddlers, screaming in the supermarket? Not my circus, not my monkeys. Schools closing down for two months straight, which realistically would mean the Easter holidays rolling into September, the world transformed into one endless summer?

"Binge and purge" nghĩa là gì?

"Binge and purge" = nhậu nhẹt và thuốc xổ -> nghĩa là ăn uống rất nhiều, tẹt ga rồi nôn mửa ngay sau đó.

Ví dụ
Grace Segers is facing down similar ghosts (ám ảnh). Segers, a political reporter for CBS, has spent her days during the pandemic working from home, next to a kitchen stocked with items she used to binge and purge: Ice cream and frozen entrees.

It was clear, due to the pattern of wear, that this patient had a history of bulimia (háu ăn) but wasn’t aware of the oral manifestations (hiện hình) that had resulted from her binge-and-purge habits.

Similarly, eating disorders (rối loạn) also bear a huge emotional toll on close friends and family. In one scene, Angela deliberately ruins her best friend’s engagement dinner in order to binge and purge on the engagement cake.

When I moved to university, with my own room and bathroom, it became a breeding (nơi sinh đẻ) ground for disordered eating; a place where I could binge and purge freely or not eat at all.

"Accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative" nghĩa là gì?

"Accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative" -> nghĩa là hãy tập trung vào những điều tích cực và quên đi tiêu cực.

Ví dụ
We voted for Joe Biden for all of his good traits (nét tiêu biểu) and skills to move us progressively and functionally forward. And, noted, we voted for Joe to eliminate all the bad residue (phần xấu còn lại) from Trump’s destructive wake. We chose Joe Biden because he’s the ideal individual to “accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.”

The DeSantis administration’s efforts to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative were not limited to significantly underreporting the state’s COVID deaths: They extended to suppressing data regarding COVID spread in public institutions such as public schools, hospitals, and prisons.

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer my obituaries to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative. Especially if they are about wonderfully talented people who brought a lot of joy into people’s lives.

Psychologists have argued that this emphasis (nhấn mạnh) on positive relationships and emotions in old age results from a conscious sense of impending (đang đe dọa) mortality. When the end is near, people accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.

"A dead clock is correct twice a day" nghĩa là gì?

"A dead clock is correct twice a day" = đồng hồ chết thì vẫn đúng hai lần trong ngày -> nghĩa là người sai cũng có khi đúng, dù chỉ tình cờ.

Ví dụ
"You know how I feel about the mayor, but even I think he's right this time. Even a dead clock is right twice a day."

Don't completely discredit (mất uy tín) other people as completely useless in life, even the worst can be used as bad examples. A dead clock is correct twice a day, appreciate the goodness, in life.

A former boss of mine used to say that there’s no one without a talent. He went on to buttress his point by noting that “even a dead clock is correct twice a day”. I’ve pondered on this over the years and concluded that he couldn’t have been more correct. When a clock stops working at 2 o’clock; the time it tells is correct at 2 am and 2 pm daily. This remains so even when the clock is left untouched for the next 100 years.

"As silent as the dead" nghĩa là gì?

"As silent as the dead" -> nghĩa là lặng như tờ (cảm giác ớn lạnh, điềm gở).

Ví dụ
In addition, I find it troubling that higher education minister (Bộ trưởng giáo dục đại học) Blade Nzimande is as silent as the dead on the matter.

The living city was almost as silent as the dead despite the 7,000 people, including children, from the various Commonwealth (toàn thể nhân dân) countries in attendance.

The machine broke down, none could fix it, and then, like in the Humpty Dumpty poem, technicians came from China to the rescue (cứu). They said the machine was fine, the problem was the table. This we know from statements by the Chinese Embassy (Đại sứ quán). The Health Ministry is as silent as the dead.

"As dead as a herring" nghĩa là gì?

Herring = cá trích. Photo by Ben Wicks on Unsplash

"As dead as a herring"= chết như cá trích -> nghĩa là chết thẳng cẳng.

Ví dụ
You thought you were as dead as a herring two hours since, and you are all alive and talking now.

I expect as Miss Flora will drop down as dead as a herring, for she doesn't think you're above the hatches. "Varney the Vampire" by Thomas Preskett Prest.

It was all figures—all figures, and to be relied on, and later on, when I put ‘em befo’ the Senate in a speech (bài phát biểu), I was cheered to the echo and the bill (dự luật) killed as dead as a herring.

The first mate now came forward and ordered him to knock off going on that way, when, without speaking he seized hold of one of the windlass bars (thanh chắn gió), and let drive with it at the mate's head, killing him as dead as a herring on the spot!.

“Bearer of bad news” nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jay Clark on Unsplash

“Bearer of bad news” -> nghĩa là người mang tin xấu/tin buồn.

Ví dụ
The British government's response has been mired in inaction, plagued by failures of the state to mobilise (huy động) and Johnson's own destructive habit of promising false dawns, simply because he cannot stand to be the bearer of bad news.

From being cooped up at home, learning virtually, to simply trying to understand the what, why and how behind the virus, kids have dealt with unforeseen obstacles, causing them to be more vulnerable (dễ bị tổn thương) and sensitive (nhạy cảm). While nobody wants to be the "bearer of bad news," the reality is, this year's holiday season will be like no other. While routine holiday plans change and uncertainty looms, many youngsters may misbehave, act out, and feel more anxious than usual.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news in a time when bad news seems to be in abundant (dồi dào) supply, but this reassuring sentiment (cảm tính) is false. More than 1.4 million children in the United States have been infected with COVID-19, with in excess of 6,000 having been hospitalized and more than 120 even dying. Pediatric COVID-19 cases now account for nearly 12% of the total cases in the United States. As we race to deliver safe and effective vaccines, it’s imperative that we also include children in studies, not just adults.

“Runt of the litter” nghĩa là gì?

“Runt of the litter” có litter là lứa đẻ, runt là con bé nhất, yếu nhất (khó sống, hoặc phát triển còi cọc) -> cụm từ này nghĩa là người yếu/nhỏ bé nhất trong nhóm anh chị em.

Ví dụ
ASHLEE Terry's family couldn't believe she decided to pick the runt of a royally bred litter by El Grand Senor from Group 1 winner Maja Mahi Mahi.

I’ve had three dogs come into and then out of my life. Before Brandy there was Sabrina, a Shetland sheepdog her breeders (người chăn nuôi) did not want because she was the runt of the litter. I realized those three lights were my three guardian angels — my Sabrina, my Brandy, my Guinness.

The litter (lứa đẻ) included two yellow Labs, originally named Graham and Cooper, and 11 black Labs, originally named Luna, Bella, Willow, Ellie, Brock, Theo, Benjamin, Winston, Astro, Bear and Harry. Nine males, four females. Benjamin, now called Parker, the last-born and runt of the litter, went to Barbara Lattoz and her daughter Natalie in Mahwah.

“A load of old cobblers” nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Mark König on Unsplash

“A load of old cobblers” có cobblers là chuyện tầm phào -> cụm từ này nghĩa là toàn chuyện tầm phào, nhảm nhí.

Ví dụ
Autumn by Karl Ove Knausgaard review – cliche, sentimentalism (tính đa cảm) and repetition (sự lặp lại). The celebrated author has written an address to his unborn child about the unnoticed (không được chú ý) strangeness of the world. It’s a load of cobblers.

The bringing back something unexpected (không mong đợi) from space genre began probably with The Quatermass Experiment in the 50s. This Russian effort has an intriguing (hấp dẫn) period setting and, within its limited ambitions, is well executed. The problem is that what it has brought back is a load of old cobblers.

Kernel of truth or load of old cobblers? All these make sense. Muscles (cơ bắp) stressed in a race or hard training session need rest to repair. The best rest is lying down, preferably asleep. On stage races, riders tried to take a short nap in the interval (khoảng thời gian) between getting to their hotel rooms and dinner; they still do. When you sleep, your body switches into full repair mode.

Ví dụ
“I was at the Fatboy Slim with my trouble and strife. Now I’m going to the rub-a-dub for some Britney Spears.” The tutorial is one in a series the newcomer will undergo (trải qua) to help him acclimatise (thích nghi) to life in the capital.

"Woman of God" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ben White on Unsplash

"Woman of God" = người của Chúa -> nghĩa là người mộ đạo, sùng đạo.

Ví dụ
The woman of God would undergo another one-year of service at a church to understudy the branch pastor (mục sư) of Adenta.

Martha was a true matriarch (người đàn bà phụ trách một đoàn thể hoặc một tổ chức; nữ chúa) and the roots that held our family together. She was a woman of God, of strong faith, who carried light and love everywhere she went.

This is a difference between the truly spiritual person and the highly religious. People who have a mere form of godliness cannot operate in the true Love of God. Oh, they can pretend (giả vờ) for a time, but the real man or woman of God exhibits (thể hiện) a pure love which is the mark of the Christian (người theo đạo Cơ Đốc).

"A stepping stone” nghĩa là gì?

“A stepping stone” = bàn đạp -> nghĩa là tình huống giúp đạt được mục tiêu hoặc kết quả mong muốn.

Ví dụ
Bill Roache initially saw 'Coronation Street' as a stepping stone in his career. The 88-year-old actor joined the ITV soap back in 1960, but at the time, he thought it would be a short-lived role on the show.

America's Poet film an honor and a stepping stone in faith for Montgomery's Jackson Cole. Cole directed and co-produced William Owens' film "Poetic Expressions of Hope, Love & Forgiveness," which premiered in person at Capri Theatre; Williams presented Cole with the True Artist Award.

How TikTok can be a stepping stone to a career in music? This is the year that TikTok became a monster. Instead of just a place where teens post dance moves to 30-second clips, it’s become a launchpad (bệ phóng) for artists’ music career. TikTok is both a new cultural phenomenon (hiện tượng) and a trend. In 2020, the platform became the #1 music search engine for generation Z people. All Jacksonville will gather around the festive board, and the citizens will appear in their best bib and tucker.

"Something nasty in the woodshed" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Will Swann on Unsplash

"Something nasty in the woodshed" = điều kinh tởm trong rừng -> nghĩa là có điều mờ ám, phạm pháp, trái đạo đức đang được che giấu công chúng.

Ví dụ
The book also contains the famous phrase ‘something nasty in the woodshed’. It’s a tribute to Gibbons’ spanking comic prose (nói một cách nhàm chán) that, when it was first published, critics believed that she was Evelyn Waugh writing under an assumed name (tên giả).

Our heroine, Flora Poste, is creative, witty, and a woman before her time. I love this character, but let’s also not forget the unforgettable character of Ada Doom, who famously coined the phrase “I saw something nasty in the woodshed!” as the response to any situation in which she finds herself in a pickle. I’m laughing even as I write this….and that’s good medicine.

Ada is always shut up in her room because she saw something nasty in the woodshed but there are plenty of others ready for her particular form of worthy interference, including handsome Seth who impregnates (làm có bầu) a village girl each time the Suke Vine is in flower, Urk, who likes Water Voles and Elfeen, who stands at Ticklepenny Corner and spouts peculiar poetry.

There’s something nasty in the woodshed at Arsenal and I’m not convinced (thuyết phục) this will have changed. Just who are the ‘dark forces’ Ozil talks about? Have all the clique who seem to have let agents in to run Arsenal’s transfer policy now been removed? I fear there may be more to be discovered which will make George Graham’s brown paper envelopes look like pocket money.

"Pace the floor" nghĩa là gì?

"Pace the floor" có pace là đi từng bước -> cụm từ này nghĩa là 'đi đi lại lại' trong phòng.

Ví dụ
Although nearly all schools in neighboring counties were closed as a result of the influenza (bệnh cúm) epidemic, all schools in the county and Sidney were open. Dorsey Nevergall has his display room ready but no new Dodges or Plymouths have yet made their appearance. As a result, he has a nice office at 111-117 West Court Street, and plenty of space to pace the floor.

Schumer remembers what the stresses (căng thẳng) of owning a small business was like for his own father, who ran an exterminator company.  "My father would actually pace the floor Sunday nights at 2 a.m. because he didn't want to go to work Monday morning," Schumer said.

So, next morning, after waiting for the restaurant to open, I can only pace the floor. I called them before they officially opened and, after asking if a wallet had been found, I was given a “yes”. In a matter of minutes, I was arriving at the front door. I quickly dashed in (lao tới) and immediately opened the wallet.

So, come the next debate I will fix myself an even stiffer (mạnh hơn) drink, pace the floor like an animal in a cage, pull at what little hair I have left and, if necessary, repair to the deck to howl at the moon. But, however excruciating (khắt khe), I will watch to the end. If Biden can take it, we can too.

"Confirmation bias" nghĩa là gì?

vẫn tin trái đất phẳng? Photo by CHUTTERSNAP on Unsplash.

"Confirmation bias" = thiên kiến xác nhận -> nghĩa là khuynh hướng của con người ưa chuộng những thông tin nào xác nhận các niềm tin hoặc giả thuyết của chính họ.

Ví dụ
Last week, I wrote about how to locate and determine reputable media sources. A friend pointed out that sometimes people will start at a predetermined conclusion and then find articles to back up that position. This is known as confirmation bias, or the tendency to seek out or interpret information in a way that supports existing beliefs or values.

We all are susceptible to confirmation bias — a tendency to interpret and recall information that supports our beliefs. Entrenched confirmation bias is at work among many community bankers when it comes to customers' changing preference for digital-first engagement. Let me explain.

The confirmation bias is another process that helps you justify your beliefs. It involves favoring information that supports your beliefs and downplaying or ignoring information to the contrary. Some researchers have called this “my side blindness” – people see the flaws in arguments that are contradictory to their own but are unable to see weaknesses in their own side. Picture fans of a football team that went 7-9 for the season, arguing that their team is actually really strong, spotting failings in other teams but not in theirs.
