"A plague on both your houses" nghĩa là gì?

"A plague on both your houses" -> nghĩa là 'cả họ nhà mày mắc dịch'.

Ví dụ
"So I wrote a book in great heat (nhiệt huyết) which said, 'a plague on both your houses,'" le Carre told the BBC in 2000. It was immediately hailed (hoan nghênh) as a classic and allowed him to quit the intelligence service to become a full-time writer.

However — considering the political divisiveness (bất hòa) of the last four years, if not longer — what made Stewart think a plague-on-both-your-houses political satire (châm biếm) would play in 2020? Jon, buddy, read the room.

Shakespeare had a bit to say about plagues (dịch bệnh) because disease was a commonplace (chuyện tầm thường) then. We know the famous line “a plague on both your houses” from “Romeo and Juliet” whether we know the play (vở kịch) or not.

Unfortunately, it has done nothing to alleviate (làm dịu) the hyper-partisanship coming from both sides of the aisle. At the risk of receiving snarky comments, I’m tempted to emulate (cạnh tranh) Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet and shout, “A plague on both your houses”!

"Not suffer fools gladly" nghĩa là gì?

"Not suffer fools gladly" -> nghĩa là không thể chịu nổi, từ chối giao du với người/hành vi ngu ngốc.

Ví dụ
“He did not suffer fools gladly but had a lot of compassion (cảm thông) for those in need,” his daughter said. “He had a great sense of humor and could be a man of few words. He was fun to be around, and his students loved him. His door was always open. He did not have a big ego (cái tôi) and could explain anything in 25 words or less.”

Sunderland fans are fiercely (mãnh liệt) loyal to the men who pull on the red and white of their favourite team, but they don’t suffer fools gladly.

His independent (độc lập), anti-establishment streak both brought him plaudits (hoan hô) and threatened the chance of future jobs. “I say exactly what I think and I don’t suffer fools gladly,” he once said.

We never give in, it’s the Scouse spirit (tinh thần) – we don’t suffer fools gladly, we hate injustice, and we have this doggedness (gan lì) to keep fighting.

"Those are the breaks" nghĩa là gì?

Mệt rồi, nghỉ thôi. Photo by Sid Leigh on Unsplash

"Those are the breaks" = đó là điểm dừng -> nghĩa là không thể thay đổi tình thế, nhất là những tình huống xấu, nên không việc gì phải buồn hết.

Ví dụ
Whether the Buckeyes make it to that Big Ten Championship Game is the sport's main issue (vấn đề) at the moment. Allowing a football factory ineligible (không đủ tiêu chuẩn) for its own league title game to play in the playoff might violate (vi phạm) a sense of fairness that would go beyond the CFP Selection Committee. If we've learned anything this season, those are the breaks. COVID-19 is calling all the plays.

Joking aside, hard to say Saturday wasn't the best overall team performance by MSU in 2020. A season-high 51 points. The defense was forcing (ép buộc) turnovers and the offense was gaining easy chunks of intermediate yardage consistently. Sure, the Bulldogs were the beneficiary (lợi lộc) of a couple abysmal (không đáy) gaffes by Missouri, but those are the breaks.

I haven't even seen it. All I saw was on the big screen. It just seems like those things work against (chống lại) us quite a bit for some reason. Just that play alone, we're probably going to go in at halftime ahead and it's probably a different second half. But those are the breaks in football and just hope some of them go our way.

Vanderpump Rules has been off the air for 80 years now. Unfortunately, those are the breaks when a stupid pandemic forces the shut down of businesses and makes an absolute (hoàn toàn) mess of the restaurant industry.

"Throw him to the wolves" nghĩa là gì?

Tại sao lại là tôi? Photo courtesy: Jesus Escribano

"Throw somebody to the wolves" = ném cho chó sói -> nghĩa là đặt một người vào tình huống mà họ bị khiển trách hoặc tấn công thậm tệ, và không đứng ra bảo vệ; nghĩa khác là hy sinh một người để cứu những người khác.

Ví dụ
After Mr. Agnew resigned in 1973 in the face of (mặc dù) extortion (tống tiền), tax fraud, bribery and conspiracy charges — he pleaded no contest to income tax evasion (trốn thuế) — and went into business, he and his wife dropped out of the public eye. The two emerged in 1994 to attend Nixon’s funeral, though Mr. Agnew believed that the president had thrown him to the wolves during Watergate to divert attention (hướng sự chú ý) from himself. Mr. Agnew died in 1996.

"People wondered if I'd really do [MMA], and I always said it had to be the right opportunity and the right conversation. The right conversation is giving me the chance to actually train, get ready and learn to [the point] where, when it's time for me to get into the ring with an elite MMA fighter, I'm ready. I don't think anybody could ever throw me to the wolves—I'm the wolf. We're just going to take my time and learn. I'm not going to go in there and give myself a disadvantage."

As NRA (Hiệp hội Súng trường Quốc gia) members and patriots who love our country and all the good it has done for Americans and for the rest of the world, we all know a fundamental decision will be made when we go to the polls in a few short days. However, as I have stated here in recent issues, and as you’ve read in Wayne LaPierre’s “Standing Guard” columns, the decision facing us in this election is of a different magnitude than ever before in our history. Voters will act to either save America, the America we love and cherish—or will vote to throw her to the wolves.

"The lowest common denominator" nghĩa là gì?

"The lowest common denominator" = mẫu số chung nhỏ nhất -> nghĩa là bộ phận trong xã hội ít sành điệu nhất hoặc có thị hiếu thấp nhất.

Ví dụ
Each channel of distribution has a different value (giá trị) proposition and will coexist. Content has traditionally been created to serve the lowest common denominator on TV or for big theatrical (sân khấu) productions, but the web is free of both constraints (ép buộc) and has definitely given a fillip (kích thích) to storytelling.

Kubernetes is turning the promise of multi-cloud into a reality. It removes the barriers (rào cản) to interoperability and portability of workloads by becoming the lowest common denominator of modern infrastructure (cơ sở vật chất).

Nothing like pandering (thỏa mãn) to the lowest common denominator. My kids would use this same argument with me. I've got a better idea. Enforce the current ordinance (sắc lệnh)! So sad that our city has become a restaurant oasis (ốc đảo) for our area, now we want the residential area to look like a rental storage area.

He is still loud. He is still crude, appealing (hấp dẫn) to the lowest common denominator. As usual, the show is still all about Carton and his world. Carton riffs and Roberts, who has no problem being covered in CC’s verbal sludge, tries to verbally counter punch.

Ví dụ
Due to the prolonged heavy rains, the water in the family's aquarium surged, fish overflowed, he rowed into the net to stop the fish but he was fed the fishes.

"2,000 children are fed the fishes each year, this is a very heartbreaking number," said a representative of the World Health Organization.

But when she climbed on the boat to perform the squid fishing (câu mực) challenge, she fed the fishes. Squid fishing is one of the popular recreational activities of tourists.

The brother saw that his brother was dropped into the sea by a wave, and immediately jumped down to save him. But both were fed the fishes. To this day, the bodies of both brothers have been found.

"Cakes and ale" nghĩa là gì?

"Cakes and ale" = bánh và bia -> nghĩa là những thú vui đơn thuần; xuất hiện lần đầu tiên trong vở kịch 'Đêm thứ mười hai' của Shakespeare: "Bạn có nghĩ rằng, vì mình có tài, sẽ không còn bánh và bia nữa không?".

Ví dụ
He believes simply that you can surprise or amuse the European or American with cake and ale.

Kids these days think only of cakes and ales—and not of the hard work they need to put in to be successful.

Peasants (người nhà quê) would normally enjoy some meat — a rare treat for them — along with cheese and eggs, cakes and ale.

"I am inclined to think that cakes and ale prevail most freely in times that are perilous (nguy hiểm) and when sources of sorrow abound." Anthony Trollope.

"Thine own self be true" nghĩa là gì?

"Thine own self be true" -> nghĩa là hành động đúng, theo lợi ích, niềm tin và mong muốn của bản thân. Cụm từ này bắt nguồn từ vở kịch Hamlet của Shakespeare.

Ví dụ
I hope that my love for God came through. And you'll always remember, "To thine own self be true."

Ms McDonald has all but issued a recruiting call as part of Sinn Féin’s poaching strategy, urging Greens: "to thine own self be true."

To thine own self be true on Facebook, individuals who express themselves more authentically on Facebook tend to report higher levels of subjective well-being. The findings, published in Nature Communications, suggest that if users engage in self-expression on social media, there may be psychological benefits associated with being authentic.

"Drown in self-pity" nghĩa là gì?

"Drown in self-pity" có self-pity là tự thương mình, tự thán -> cụm từ này nghĩa là chìm đắm trong nỗi buồn đến mức bê tha, tê liệt.

Ví dụ
It's hard to help someone who would rather drown in self-pity than find a solution to their problems.

The characters this season were a little too developed in my opinion; Dan (Kevin Alejandro) continued to drown in self-pity while attempting to go the extreme in self-help and kindness.

I was a big girl. But slowly I developed a defence mechanism (cơ chế phòng vệ), which would not let me get bogged down by insults. It was like, I am this person, take it or leave it. That attitude really helped me deal with this and not slip into depression or drown in self pity.

"Drown your sorrows" nghĩa là gì?

"Drown one's sorrows" -> nghĩa là uống rượu để nhấn chìm nỗi buồn, "mượn rượu giải sầu".

Ví dụ
Dani Dyer's nana takes her out for a beer to drown her sorrows after splitting (chia tay) from boyfriend.

In the year that King Uzziah died, Isaiah the prophet didn’t go to the bar and drown his sorrows. He didn’t go to the golf course. He didn’t go home and curl up in a fetal position. Isaiah went to the temple.

Theology, Sociology or Geography. These degrees have more than their last letter in common. Everyone mocks your degree so you drown your sorrows with this spirit and can often be seen crying over a McDonalds at 3am, pondering (cân nhắc) your unemployability (thất nghiệp).

"Unable to hear yourself think" nghĩa là gì?

"Unable to hear oneself think" = không thể nghe được ý nghĩ -> nghĩa là quá ồn ào, không thể tập trung được.

Ví dụ
But it paired, and I started playing my music and the sound was crisp (nhanh) and loud. At full volume, it felt like you could be in a night club, unable to hear yourself think.

If you walked by the Jacob and Dreizel Glueck Center for Jewish Study between the hours of 8:00-10:15 pm over the past two weeks, you might have wondered why you were unable to hear yourself think. The answer, of course, is due to the overwhelming (choáng ngợp) success of the Night Seder program, which has been producing an audible (có thể nghe thấy) buzz that very closely resembles the (now world-famous due to the recent 360° video the Yeshiva posted on Facebook) Torah buzz of mornings in the Beit Midrash.

Have you ever felt lost or come to an intersection (giao lộ), unsure of what path to follow? Are you constantly questioning and second-guessing yourself, wondering if you’re making the right decisions? Do you have dreams and desires that seem to have stalled?  Are you sinking from all the distractions and interruptions, unable to hear yourself think…clearly?

Playing at Eden Gardens is considered a rite of passage for a cricketer. Imagine trying to concentrate on your first ball, unable to hear yourself think as 66,000 screaming fans roar (gầm) the opposing bowler on.
