"Get some shuteye" nghĩa là gì?

"Get some shuteye" -> nghĩa là đi ngủ.

Ví dụ
It's time for this blog to get some shuteye. It'll be back in the morning of course. Catch you next time.

South Africans, just like a multitude (vô số) of other nations across the globe have been struggling to get some shuteye this year.

You’ll have to consider many different things to ensure that you get enough sleep every night. Aside from having a high-quality mattress (đệm), the temperature of your room also affects your ability to fall and stay sleep. Regardless of how tired you are during the day, it’ll be challenging for you to get some shuteye if you feel too warm or cold.

These Tempur products aren’t going to make the stress and anxiety disappear in a puff of vaccinated smoke. But for the hours you’re trying to get some shuteye, for the hours you’re glued (dán vào) to a chair and your laptop, and for the hours you’ll spend on long hauls (and not driving); you will be grateful you have them, that they’ve restored a little bit of your faith in the concept of Quality of Life.

"Cringe away from" nghĩa là gì?

"Cringe away from" có cringe là co rúm -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tránh xa điều gì hoặc ai vì sợ hãi.

Ví dụ
But when they sound like regular guys without a serious overbite (quá mức) and skin like an overripe (chín quá) avocado it kind of makes them lose the potency (uy lực) of the look since the original voices are something to be scared of and cringe away from.

'The cysts (u nang) have caused me to not want to go out because I don't want it to be seen,' she explained. 'I'm always afraid for someone to make a loving gesture (cử chỉ) on the back of my head. I cringe away from that because it's embarrassing.'

With the hottest months of the year already upon us, a change in our body’s precipitation levels is quite obvious. Although most of us cringe away from sweaty palms or awkward summer hugs, sweating isn’t such a bad thing after all.

From his foul (sai phạm) treatment of his cloned servants to his embarrassing play depicting Dr. Manhattan's transformation, viewers cringe away from the screen whenever Adrian Veidt shows up.

Ý gì đây?

luôn "cảnh giác" với các con số được trình bày lẻ loi, không có bối cảnh...
-----
trích dẫn hôm nay… is from page 142 of the late Hans Rosling’s insightful 2018 book, Factfulness:

When I see a lonely number in a news report, it always triggers an alarm: What should this lonely number be compared to? What was that number a year ago? Ten years ago? What is it in a comparable country or region? And what should it be divided by? What is the total of which this is a part? What would this be per person? I compare the rates, and only then do I decide whether it really is an important number.

DBx: The heightened relevance today of this bit of wisdom is obvious.

Here’s a letter to the New York Times:

Editor:
So it has come to this: a contributing opinion writer – Dr. Richard Friedman – for the New York Times now advocates suppressing (đình bản, tịch thâu; đàn áp, chặn) the speech of those who dissent (bất bình) from the current consensus of “experts.” It’s terrifying (làm cho khiếp sợ, kinh hãi)… and predictable.

The historian of political thought David Hart calls governments’ responses to Covid-19 “hygiene socialism.” This description is apt. All genuinely socialist regimes, which require for their ‘success’ everyone’s obedience (tuân lời) to The Plan, stamp out (dập tắt, dẹp, nghiền nát) freedom of expression (tự do biểu hiện) and dissent. After all, because The Plan is said to offer the only hope of saving the masses from the chaos (hỗn loạn) and depredations (cướp bóc, phá phách) that allegedly would persist if individuals are left free, all opponents of The Plan are enemies of The People. And so in the name of The People, dissenters must be silenced – just as Dr. Friedman demands.

And thus does tyranny descend upon us all.

Sincerely,
Donald J. Boudreaux

"Dick measuring contest" nghĩa là gì?

"Dick measuring contest" = xem chim ai to hơn -> nghĩa là mấy thằng thi thố vớ vẩn xem ai bản lĩnh hơn.

Ví dụ
Things got so bad under Kushner's command that the president* actually got mad at him, which apparently happens once every Great Conjunction. But, by my lights, the worst episode in the piece comes when the CDC recommends face-covering generally for the country, and the assembled He-Men of the administration* decide to make wearing a mask a losing proposition (lời đề nghị) in the White House dick-measuring contest.

Thus is the methodology (phương pháp luận) in a dick measuring contest among men who pay amateur (nghiệp dư) athletes and put their name on buildings: If no one else is standing, yours is the biggest. Even if it’s still real small.

It said Fahl characterized (mô tả) losing an argument as “getting fucked in the ass” and she allegedly accused Torpey, a former South Orange village president, of engaging in a “dick measuring contest” with Burd, the emergency management coordinator, and others.

We could say Hopper/Welles is lightning-in-a-bottle history, though that’s maybe affording too much credit; one’s liable (có khả năng bị) to appreciate this two-hour dialogue as an intellectual game of cat-and-mouse, a constant attempt at outfoxing and play-acting, or maybe just a dick-measuring contest.

"Never start a land war in Asia" nghĩa là gì?

"Never start a land war in Asia" = đừng bao giờ khơi mào cuộc chiến trên bộ ở châu Á -> nghĩa là đừng bắt đầu một cuộc xung đột quá lớn hoặc quá nặng nề khiến khó có thể giành thắng lợi.

Ví dụ
You see, I fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous of which is “never start a land war in Asia,” but only slightly less well-known is “Never look for meaning in Spring Training.”

Sky Is Blue, Never Start A Land War In Asia, Loria Is Cheap. After fourteen years, it’s just really hard to get riled up (chọc tức) about this.  It’s not that Jeffrey Loria is never going to spend enough to make everyone happy- it’s that I don’t think he can.

If there’s one thing I know, it’s never start a land war in Asia. The second thing I know is if you are a showrunner for Game of Thrones and you are speaking with Jason Momoa at peak Khal Drogo, never challenge him to a feat of strength.

His favourite lesson from history, he says, is: ‘Never start a land war in Asia. And also: history should make us feel incredibly (phi thường) lucky to be alive now. The healthcare, the freedoms, the dating apps...we’re the luckiest people who ever lived.’

"Get the party started" nghĩa là gì?

"Get the party started" = hãy bắt đầu bữa tiệc -> nghĩa là làm việc gì với đầy nhiệt huyết, quyết tâm, nhiệt tình.

Ví dụ
Dr. John Sheehan (UW Oncology), Drs. Micah Chan and Gardizi (UW Nephrology), the Wisconsin Dialysis staff (especially Dawn) and my multiple myeloma support group (who could always make me laugh!). I will see you on the other side—someone has to get the party started. You know what a “control freak” I am!

Get the party started with this LED speaker. The wireless (không dây) speaker connects to your phone and syncs up the lights to whatever music you're playing.

Circa's stunning suite (căn hộ) collection spans from 822 to 1,612 square feet and are a glamorous way to get the party started. The one-bedroom accommodations feature spacious (to lớn) living rooms complete with floor-to-ceiling windows, sophisticated (sành điệu) lounge-style furniture, a black quartz dining table and full wet bar with refrigerator.

Why wait until the sun goes down to bring the bubbly (rượu sâm panh) out? Joy and celebration are big themes for you under the influence of this full moon. You're in the mood to get the party started exactly where you are, in the company of your main crew.

"I wouldn't kick you out of bed for eating crackers" nghĩa là gì?

"I wouldn't kick you out of bed for eating crackers" = anh sẽ không đá em khỏi giường vì ăn bánh trên giường đâu -> nghĩa là thấy ai vẫn đủ hấp dẫn để làm tình, dù có tật xấu.

Ví dụ
Toward the end of her life, I noticed she would read these cheap romance novels (tiểu thuyết) that she probably got from church bazaars (tạp hóa). Or she’d make comments about attractive men like, “I wouldn’t kick him out of bed for eating crackers.” But she was never a sexual being to me. She always felt old and her manner was very repressed.

Yes, Sookie sure is “spreading the wealth” so to say!!! She hit just about all the guys on the show so far, other than her brother and Andy Belf… all I’m wondering is when Lafayette is going to get his chance… lol… Just wonderin’ :) “Danger whore (gái điếm)”??? Yeah I’d say she is…. but I wouldn’t kick her out of bed for eating crackers!!!! lol

That question takes on a particularly meta edge when applied to “Micro.” One of the main characters on New Girl is a professional model; she used to date a character whose vanity is one of his funniest and most endearing idiosyncrasies (đặc tính). And, as a sitcom (tình thế hài kịch) produced in the post-Friends era, New Girl boasts an ensemble (ấn tượng chung) that you wouldn’t kick out of bed for eating crackers. (In fact, Nick would prefer to eat his crackers there.)
