"One-upmanship" nghĩa là gì?

Luis Villasmil on Unsplash

"One-upmanship" -> nghĩa là cố giành và giữ lợi thế hơn người khác.

Ví dụ
Flipkart, which is fighting a close battle with US e-tail giant Amazon for one-upmanship in India’s booming e-commerce (thương mại điện tử) market, will use Cleartrip to diversify (đa dạng  hóa) and expand into other product categories, such as online bookings of hotels and flights, to boost its overall gross merchandise value (GMV).

The top teams in the NHL’s East Division played a high-stakes game of one-upmanship in the hours before the trade deadline Monday, while the West leaders made depth moves designed to extend their Stanley Cup playoff runs. The Ducks did what they’ve done all season — not much.

So, Bengal elections have turned into a hot no holds barred electoral (bầu cử) battle wherein both Modi and Mamata are unwilling to bend. It has turned into a game of one-upmanship.

Ankara insists (khăng khăng muốn) it was a straightforward error, but many others, knowing Erdogan’s obsession with status and macho (trượng phu) one-upmanship and the quasi-monarchical trappings with which he surrounds himself, struggle to believe that.

"Last thing on your mind" nghĩa là gì?

Markus Winkler on Unsplash

"Last thing on your mind" = điều cuối cùng ở trong đầu -> nghĩa là điều không quan trọng, không đáng để quan tâm vì còn nhiều thứ khác quan trọng hơn.

Ví dụ
When you’re craving a savory (món ăn mặn) indulgence (ham mê) and your calorie count is the last thing on your mind, an order of mozzarella sticks is pretty tough to beat.

What does dating look like in a pandemic? When the world is crumbling (vỡ vụn) around us, dating might be the last thing on your mind. Or, it might be your main distraction from the disaster we experience every day. Whichever one it is, love and sex are still an important part of our lives, and the pandemic has unquestionably changed how we date, hook up and maintain relationships.

Disinfecting and properly storing your sexccesories may be the last thing on your mind after getting off, but not taking the time to do it could mess with your health and your toy’s shelf life.

EASTON, Pennsylvania, April 6 (TNSJou) -- Lafayette College issued the following news: If you're facing a medical emergency, inquiring (tò mò) about treatment costs is the last thing on your mind.

"It slipped my mind" nghĩa là gì?

Daria Nepriakhina on Unsplash

"It slipped my mind" = trượt khỏi não tôi mất rồi -> nghĩa là tôi quên béng mất rồi.

Ví dụ
I never gave a man of the match in the game for whatever reason, maybe it slipped my mind. There was probably three or four Everton players you could have given it to, but I watched the game again yesterday morning when I got up and their Man of the Match was the manager, Carlo Ancelotti.

It's already empty and it ain't even suppertime (giờ ăn tối)/ Honey, no, I don't miss him/ In fact, it slipped my mind/ There's a hole in the bottle of wine.

We found [the Chat is] way too much for staff and committees (ủy ban) to manage, so that’s a county-wide decision. I’m sorry, that was a decision that was made above my level and I intended to tell everyone, but it slipped my mind.

“I read the script and thought ‘This makes no sense’. All I had to do was go in and have a meeting, and I didn’t. “It slipped my mind. Probably because I was convinced (thuyết phục) there was no point and nothing would come of it.

"Not show her face" nghĩa là gì?

"Not show one's face" -> nghĩa là không lộ mặt, không đến chỗ đông người do xấu hổ, tội lỗi.

Ví dụ
If she knows what's good for her, she won't show her face around here anytime soon.

They can't show their faces in this town anymore after what happened two years ago.

"Many people were crushed (đè bẹp) under train seats in the collision (vụ va chạm)" a passenger with gauze taped to her elbow told Taiwanese broadcaster EBC, which did not show her face or give her name.

"You can make everything with nothing," is the motto of this foodie convict, who films himself in action with his phone but does not show his face on camera in order to remain anonymous (ẩn danh).

"Ball the jack" nghĩa là gì?

Tượng trưng thôi nhé, này chỉ là quả bóng bàn! Photo by Alana Mediavilla on Unsplash

"Ball the jack" có jack là biệt danh đoàn tàu, highball là tiến lên -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tăng tốc, đi nhanh.

Ví dụ
A: "Come on Tom, pick up the pace, ball the jack, let's move!" B: "Ugh, I can't run any faster this early in the morning!"

That means an Arctic blast (luồng hơi) can reach southern regions relatively quickly and Mediterranean heat can ball the jack into northern areas.

On the developer side, Informatica claimed that IDMC enables agility and collaboration with a low-code or no-code experience allowing customers to ball the jack from an idea for a new application or service to implementation, responding to dynamic business requirements and changes in real time.

"Idleness is the root of all evil" nghĩa là gì?

Kẻ lười biếng là kẻ luôn thất bại, thua cuộc. Photo by Gita Krishnamurti on Unsplash

"Idleness is the root of all evil" = lười biếng là cội rễ của mọi điều xấu xa -> nghĩa là nếu không có công việc hữu ích để làm, sẽ nghĩ ra việc có hại để giải trí cho bản thân; 'nhàn cư vi bất thiện'.

Ví dụ
Why do you make me do so many chores? Father: Idleness is the root of all evil.

When I'm off from school, my grandmother is always trying to get me out of the house, while reminding me that idleness is the root of all evil.

Gamblers (con bạc) of all backgrounds, ages, from pregnant women to 76-year-old grandmothers. Those "idleness is the root of all evil" choose to "kill" each other with a red and black game that is causing pain and complicated society.

"Hot diggety dog" nghĩa là gì?

"Hot diggety dog" có diggety là lạc quan -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cảm thán về sự phấn khích, thú vị, ngạc nhiên.

Ví dụ
Hot diggety dog! I can't wait to try out my new motorbike!

Our application was approved? Well, hot diggety dog!

America's most trusted man never hid his emotions: He wept at JFK's death and blurted "Hot diggety dog!" at the launch of Apollo 11.

"Cop yourself on" nghĩa là gì?

"Cop yourself on" -> nghĩa là tự khôn ra, dùng lý lẽ hay logic thông thường để hiểu ra tình hình.

Ví dụ
You might be thinking now, cop yourself on and stop over-thinking this.

I said then "right, cop yourself on now, get back on the saddle (yên ngựa), there's nothing you can do, everyone's on the same side" and I was just like feck (hiệu lực) this.

At 15, I got thrown into the pathway as they call it, into southeast and Leinster and Ireland underage structures. You cop yourself on a bit at that age and throw yourself into rugby.

That’s the whole reason they gave Tusla access. You can go to them and have the records checked, so in that case, you can access the records. Cop yourself on. We were lied to by the opposition. The records haven’t been frozen for 30 years.

"Play the ball and not the man" nghĩa là gì?

Nhìn vậy thôi chứ đoán được làm nghề gì không mng 😀. Paul Castanié on Unsplash

"Play the ball and not the man" = chơi bóng chứ không chơi người -> nghĩa là không vội đánh giá ai thông qua điều họ làm.

Ví dụ
Today's victory against the Aussies has proved that the best way to beat Australia in Australia is to play the ball and not the man.

I have never thought of myself as particularly confrontational (đương đầu), if you attack me, yes, I will fight back but I have always preferred to play the ball and not the man.

Rather than speak about how other people had voted and criticising them, what you need to focus on is justifying why and how you voted the way you did and that's how you would play the ball and not the man.

The nastiness (sự thô tục) and name-calling is not a good thing. We need to play the ball and not the man. Unfortunately we have seen allegations of lying and in previous years we have seen a member threatening to hit another. They are not helpful.

"Which is which" nghĩa là gì?

"Which is which" -> nghĩa là không thể phân biệt được, 'cái nào là cái nào'.

Ví dụ
Shoot, we both brought the same kind of backpack to class. Do you know which is which?

If you put the OnePlus 9 and 9R side-by-side face-up, you won’t really be able to tell which is which.

The two political parties have become so similar over the years that I honestly have a hard time telling which is which.

The comparison of each to a nonspecific (không rõ ràng) control like Chinese herbal medicine should allow us to determine in absolute terms which is which.

người đàn ông ở vienna, áo bị phạt gần 14 triệu đồng vì đánh rắm vào mặt cảnh sát, đã được giảm chỉ còn phải nộp 2,7 triệu sau khi kháng cáo :D

The unidentified culprit (thủ phạm) was fined for 'offending public decency' after farting (đánh rắm) provocatively (khiêu khích, trêu chọc) at police on June 5, 2020.

The man successfully challenged the hefty fine (khoản tiền phạt lớn) by arguing his flatulence (đầy bụng, đầy hơi) was a 'biological process' (quá trình sinh học).

...He also claimed that breaking wind should be seen as a right under freedom of expression (tự do biểu đạt), even if he had done so deliberately (có chủ đích, chủ ý).

Freedom of expression in Austria is not limited to communication and can take other forms, such as noises.

However, the sound or communication must have 'communicative intent', which, the court said, was not the case with a fart.

"Make an exhibition of yourself" nghĩa là gì?

Jonathan Borba on Unsplash

"Make an exhibition of oneself" -> nghĩa là hành xử ngu ngốc, thiếu suy nghĩ ở nơi công cộng; như cách các bạn trẻ hay nói: tự biến mình thành cái rạp xiếc.

Ví dụ
Don't over-indulge (quá nuông chiều). Several hours of drinking on a summer's afternoon can be highly intoxicating and you don't want to make an exhibition of yourself.

At my request, he rises from the couch in his London hotel room, pulls his sweater (áo) off, and proceeds to make an exhibition of himself, bringing me on a guided tour through the numerous works of skin art that decorate his arms and rather emaciated (hốc hác) looking upper torso.

He the can be seen clapping his hands above his head, before his friend pulls him away, clearly thinking that he's had enough. But it's not the first time that the actor has decided to make an exhibition of himself at a Hammarby match, as was filmed doing something similar back in 2010.

"Judge, jury and executioner" = thẩm phán, bồi thẩm và hành hình -> nghĩa là người có toàn quyền quyết định quyền sinh quyền sát.

Ví dụ
Cllr Richard Kemp, leader of Liverpool Liberal Democrats, today told the ECHO: "Joe wasn't the Mayor, but the Emperor. "He became judge, jury and executioner, and it demonstrated (hiện diện) all the problems with that new Mayoral system, putting all the power in just one pair of hands.

Family members of Dominique Williams expressed outrage (xúc phạm) Monday over his killing as the off-duty Pentagon police officer charged with murder in the shooting made his first appearance in a Maryland courtroom. “He became the judge, jury and executioner on his own free will,” said Erica Teel, a cousin. “Our family is devastated by this.”

However, his particular reaction was perhaps a tad (một chút) extreme, and certainly not heroic. He goes full-on vigilante, becoming judge, jury, and executioner for every manner of low-life who was somehow lucky enough to not be snapped out existence.

"The public has a right to know about these officers ... who're carrying a gun and can be the judge, jury and executioner," he said. Racop said he has published personal identifying information about police officers on his blog for years but has never heard about any of those officers coming to harm.

người đàn ông quốc tịch thụy sĩ 66 tuổi sống ở tây ban nha, chạy sai làn gần biên giới với pháp, trên ghế phụ là... một xác chết..., đang bị điều tra :)
An investigation has been launched after a man drove the wrong way down a highway in Spain with a dead body in the passenger seat. The unnamed motorist, 66, was arrested after he was involved in a crash close to the town of Girona in the northeast of the country.

When officers arrived at the scene of the crash and looked inside his vehicle they found the body of an elderly man in an advanced state of decomposition (phân hủy, thối rữa), which was covered with a blanket (phủ chăn) and strapped into the front passenger seat using the belt (đeo dây an toàn ở ghế trước).

A Catalonia regional police spokesperson told the AFP news agency that the driver was originally heading towards the French border.

After seeing French law enforcement conducting roadside border checks at the crossing into France near Le Boulou, he allegedly turned his vehicle around and drove the wrong way down the AP-7 highway.

Police alleged that the driver, a Spanish-Swiss dual national who lived in Spain, ignored signals to stop his vehicle and after nearly 20 miles of driving he turned off the road and crashed.

còn theo bài mới của nytimes thì Archegos Capital Management chưa bao giờ công bố bất kỳ thông tin nào về các khoản đầu tư cổ phiếu của mình (file 13F nộp cho SEC), trong lịch sử 8 năm qua...
Archegos Capital Management, the $10 billion firm that collapsed spectacularly last month, never publicly disclosed any stock investments. Even for a firm whose structure and strategy came with fewer regulatory requirements, that was a remarkable achievement.

Money managers with $100 million or more in stocks are generally required to declare what securities they are invested in every quarter. But Archegos, a so-called family office that managed the fortune of the former hedge fund manager Bill Hwang, did not publicly file such a document — called a 13F — in its eight-year history.

The lack of a paper trail is uncommon for a firm with so much money, according to securities experts.

...Archegos stayed largely under the radar until it fell apart last month. As a family office — a firm generally created to handle the investments of a single wealthy person and a small circle around them — it did not have to register as an investment adviser with the S.E.C., because it did not manage money for outsiders. Also, the firm frequently employed a kind of derivative — called a swap — that allowed it to invest heavily in the stocks of certain companies, including ViacomCBS, without owning the shares itself.

But Archegos invested substantial sums in plain vanilla stocks, according to a person briefed on Mr. Hwang’s portfolio and tax filings made by the Grace and Mercy Foundation, the charity Mr. Hwang founded and supported with some of his vast wealth.

"In trouble with the law" = có vấn đề với pháp luật -> nghĩa là bị công an tra khảo vì dính líu tới những việc phi pháp.

Ví dụ
The family's attorney (người thụ ủy) has advocated (bào chữa) for the most serious charges (tội danh) and sentence on behalf of his young client. Britt Reid is 35 years old and has served as a football coach several times under his father Andy Reid. He's been in trouble with the law before.

"Tech savvy" nghĩa là gì?

"Tech savvy" có savvy là hiểu biết -> cụm từ này nghĩa là người sành đồ công nghệ.

Ví dụ
Many companies are looking for tech-savvy employees that are able to work remotely (từ xa) and are even offering training to get everyone up to speed. "Tech Elevator" is a 14-week coding boot camp where students learn to become software developers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed B.C. seniors to become more tech savvy in an effort to stay in touch (giữ liên lạc) with family, according to a B.C. Hydro report on Thursday.

"The scales fall from your eyes" nghĩa là gì?

Harry Quan on Unsplash

"The scales fall from your eyes" = bụi rơi khỏi mắt -> nghĩa là cuối cùng cũng hiểu ra, sáng mắt ra.

Ví dụ
The claim irritates (làm khó chịu) me because it stifles (đàn áp) creativity and openness: of course a woman knows she is not the first to have a baby, but observing my friends has taught me that pregnancy is a process of discovery. It can make the scales fall from your eyes about all kind of things – the division of domestic labour, patriarchy, work, art and sleep.

This position will also be particular helpful for dumping (vứt bỏ) anything toxic that is dragging you down. Retrograde Mercury in Scorpio is right there – as is the Scorpio Moon. As a result, let the scales fall from your eyes as the hours begin to pass.

Then, you see a movie, or start watching a TV show, and you hear the phrase there. The scales fall from your eyes. You realize that all this time your friend was quoting (trích dẫn) a character.

It’s not there anymore, so why do this to yourself? Why, indeed. Enough is enough. The scales fall from your eyes, finally, and you let go 100%. It’s liberating, empowering, and healing. And, what’s more, it makes space for new news to flow into your world.

"Pull a fast one on" nghĩa là gì?

"Pull a fast one on" -> nghĩa là lừa đảo, trục lợi từ người khác.

Ví dụ
On April Fools’ Day, if you’re not the one playing pranks (trò đùa), there’s a good chance someone is going to try to pull a fast one on you.

The first of April is typically when people expect a silly gag (câu nói đùa) or a prank, or for a friend to pull a fast one on them. But for brothers Jimi and John Honochick, the silliness starts later in the month on April 10. The date marks National Siblings Day.

The truth, as we now know, turned out to be the opposite (đối lập). We are not imprisoned by grammar. We are liberated giải phóng) by it. Clarity is the enemy of ambiguity and ambiguity is the friend of every politician who has ever tried to pull a fast one on an unsuspecting public.

Ola did pull a fast one on all of us. Even some media (truyền thông) houses took Bhavish Aggarwal’s LinkedIn post about launching the first-ever fully autonomous, electric flying at face value.

"Strain for effect" nghĩa là gì?

"Strain for effect" -> nghĩa là cố gắng tạo ra hiệu ứng kịch tính hoặc đầy tính nghệ thuật trong bài phát biểu, buổi biểu diễn, bài viết, v.v...

Ví dụ
This speculative dystopia (sự lạc chỗ) may strain for effect but is carried through by sheer energy and verve (cảm hứng).

The book is competently done, with a direct style that doesn't strain for effect and a moral frankness and freedom from sentimentality (tính đa cảm).

Those performances help make up for the limitations of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez’s songs, many of them reprised from the film. Lyrics such as “love is an open door” sound a bit trite the second time around. And the synth-heavy music has a boisterous (dữ dội, náo nhiệt), schmaltzy (ủy mị quá đáng) air that often seems to strain for effect.

"Money laundering" nghĩa là gì?

Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash

"Money laundering" -> nghĩa là biến tiền kiếm được qua các hành vi phi pháp thành tiền hợp pháp; rửa tiền.

Ví dụ
For years, the United States’ anti-money laundering legislation (luật) has lagged behind those of other countries. Not only has this made it simpler for criminals to reap (gặt hái) the rewards from their illegal activities, it has also put the burden of identifying money launderers on financial institutions.

It is important to note that money laundering does not happen in a vacuum. It involves multiple players, some of whom may be acting completely within the law and in the belief they are assisting with a legitimate transaction.

Kuwaiti authorities had also investigated (điều tra) some social media influencers around the same time for money laundering. The company was in talks to raise fresh funds at a valuation of up to $1 billion when the Kuwaiti authorities started an investigation into its finances.

Others face multiple charges (tội danh) each including money laundering, obtaining by deception (lừa đảo) and possessing methamphetamine, cannabis and cocaine for supply.

"Toing and froing" nghĩa là gì?

Balkouras Nicos on Unsplash

"Toing and froing" -> nghĩa là đi đi lại lại nhiều nơi; nghĩa khác là liên tiếp thay đổi ý định.

Ví dụ
“It was really simple, we cut a sizzle and took it to her and she really loved it.” There was a bit of toing and froing to find the right treatment (điều trị), “eventually we got it to a place where she was genuinely excited and greenlit it.”

In short, both are porous (có lỗ hổng) between the lines, sitting in a decompressed shape that allows the attackers to burst straight through them, hence the toing and froing in Munich; once again, PSG and Bayern will cause serious damage in every transition.

It’s a bit of a cliche but it’s five cup finals to make sure we’re in the play-offs. We’re still in a good position to go and get second as well; it’s not in our hands right now, but there’s going to be a lot of toing and froing still to go from the other clubs as well.

Adams maintained: “I said it many months ago, I think it’s an extremely tight (khó khăn) league and there is a lot of toing and froing still to go. “We have got some really good games coming up to play and it’s really exciting being in the position we’re in.”

"Use as an excuse" nghĩa là gì?

"Use as an excuse" -> nghĩa là viện cớ, bịa lý do cho sai lầm, thất bại.

Ví dụ
“That's really the ultimate goal, and you have COVID to use as an excuse to kind of add to 17,” said Turbin. With the removal of preseason games, however, teams have a harder time evaluating new players who were drafted late.

In Cleveland for the second leg of a back-to-back (which you can’t even use as an excuse because the Cavs were also on the second leg of a back-to-back), the Celtics opened their night with misses on nine of their first 12 shots of the evening. It was enough to noticeably deflate the Celtics, and the Cavs pounded on that to the tune of a 17-point halftime lead.

Accustomed to being at the center of public criticism, the “coachmen” use as an excuse the expenses they have to face to justify the frequency of trips. “Taxes did not increase, and in fact many have not even obtained a license, but everything else is through the roof,” said a coachman (người đánh xe ngựa) from the stand located next to the Provincial Museum of the city. He considered himself lucky because he had his own horse and carriage (xe ngựa), although he was also hoping to meet the challenge of raising at least 200 CUP (Cuban pesos) a day to acquire the grass and molasses (mật đường) with which he feeds his animal.

"Urge to purge" nghĩa là gì?

"Urge to purge" = thúc để xổ ra -> nghĩa là cần nôn/ói ngay.

Ví dụ
There’s something about the warmer, sunnier weather of spring that brings out the urge to purge for many people. Spring cleaning tasks can include washing windows, cleaning carpets and emptying out cluttered closets. It’s a therapeutic chore for many, as a way to put the darker days of winter behind and embrace a new season.

Feeling the urge to purge? Then it’s time for some spring cleaning. With a few simple tips and tricks, your home — and mood — can be refreshed and revitalized. For the biggest payoff for your efforts, focus spring cleaning in the areas of the home that are used most: The kitchen and bathroom.

Unlike the 2013 movie (directed, written and produced by men), which imagined a 12-hour period of legalised violence as beneficial social catharsis, the International Women’s Day purge sees women share their stories of inequality in a rush from dawn to dusk (từ lúc hoàng hôn đến bình minh, tối đến sáng), capitalising on the empathetic audience they are suddenly afforded. But much like the movie, the IWD purge does not seem to affect high-ranking officials; it becomes entertainment for annual tourists. That being said, this year I am feeling the urge to purge.

"The sunny side of 20" nghĩa là gì?

"The sunny side of (an age)" = mặt chiếu sáng -> nghĩa là hơi trẻ so với mức tuổi (20, 30, 40,...)

Ví dụ
(Singing) Melindy was a mousy (lắm chuột, nhút nhát) living in a little housy and her life was one of wonderful ease. On the sunny side of 20 with a poppa (bố) who had plenty, her life was just a bowl of cheese. One day a kitty said, my, but you're pretty. I love you. Mousey near died, but replied, why I know nothing of you. You're just a kitty cat.

Despite still being on the sunny side of 30, I was given a great deal of responsibility and the freedom to put my ideals into practice. As now, I believed in regular exercise, that everyone could learn, and in the equality and infinite potential of each person. I taught and tutored our at-risk students, coached and was the assistant athletic director.

Well, that and the ability to perform precision-tool dancing, to sing on key and to perceive the stage as a snark-free zone, even when extolling Disney World as an earthly paradise or the bliss of having your own personal planet in the afterlife. If the audience wants to hoot at such declarations, it is welcome to. But those onstage must project an unflinching sincerity and optimism (lạc quan). These are traits that come more easily to the young, and most of the performers here are indeed on the sunny side of 40.

A hungry man is an angry man, [and] the reaction of the young one is to pick up the guns against the state and their fellow citizens.”

A hungry man is an angry man indeed. Looking forward to having chicken rice for dinner on Monday (Mar 8), a man placed an order via foodpanda. But he soon realised that his order could not be fulfilled in its entirety — the shop had run out of chicken, and he'd only receive four portions of rice with a side of vegetables.

One of the ways through which the government endears itself to its citizens, is by providing adequate food security. There is a popular saying in the lands of my father, that a hungry man is an angry man. This establishes the fact that no meaningful development can take place in a community where the people are poorly fed. Undoubtedly, malnourishment (thiếu ăn, suy dinh dưỡng) also results in poor health which affects productive capability of people.

"The in thing" nghĩa là gì?

"The (in) thing"-> nghĩa là phong cách, thời trang đang mốt, thịnh hành.

Ví dụ
Smart contracts are gradually becoming the 'in thing' across technological advances (sự phát triển, tiến bộ công nghệ), with hundreds of apps that use smart contracts already up and running. However, smart contracts are currently limited as they need oracles to communicate data from the off-chain world.

Big Data is the in thing. Enterprises can no longer dismiss it as hype. The early movers will reap in the significant benefits. The last two years have seen the big data phenomenon (hiện tượng) riding the hype wave and now reached the ‘necessity’ phase and increasingly inevitable for enterprise computing. But as we look at the adoption curve, in geography like India, its just about starting.

Recently though, there’s been one trend making waves on social media and the wider world and we’re not quite so taken by it. For those unaware of what the influencers are doing these days, it seems wearing your bikini top upside down is not only fashionable, it’s the in thing. Led by the Kardashian clan and Kylie Jenner, the new swimwear trend is all the rage and countless Aussie influencers are now getting in on the action by wearing their bikinis the wrong way up.

Off the same 2018 album with the song "Total Football," this potent ditty is a pair of jumper cables for a fresh-out-of-bed workout. If you're not up an at 'em after the first few bars, there's not much more help for you.

“The kids love ice fishing, it’s a bit of an event in our house. We tend to pack everything up the night before and when the alarm goes off we’re up and at them out the door right away before the sun comes up,” Cunningham said.

“Compared to 60, 80 miles away, we are selfishly relieved,” said Roberts, referencing the Bahamas, which were devastated by Hurricane Dorian. “Although we’re not completely relieved because of what’s going on over there. But we’re trying to get everything ready to go so we can be up an at ‘em here.”

"Sow your wild oats" nghĩa là gì?

"Sow one's wild oats" -> nghĩa là chơi bời tác tráng lúc còn trẻ.

Ví dụ
Because you’ve been in prison for 20 years, do you think it’s best for you to sow your wild oats or are you looking to jump into a committed (tận tâm) relationship?

I don’t think you’re ready for serious commitment and, if that’s what this is all about, then you need to admit it to yourself. If you want to be young, free and single and sow your wild oats, there’s nothing wrong with that, but leave your girlfriend first.

Still, Rinaldi wouldn’t necessarily recommend (khuyên bảo) that other women take exactly the same path she did. Instead, she’d advise younger women to “sow your wild oats before you settle down — that’s a no-brainer.”

Keep things honest, and if you really must stray, do it ethically (có đạo đức), which might mean breaking up your great marriage. I used your own word to describe your union in hopes of showing you just how big of a mistake you might be making. Respect your husband, his wishes, and the integrity (chính trực) of your relationship with him, or put an end to all of that and sow your wild oats.
