"Pox doctor's clerk" nghĩa là gì?

"Pox doctor's clerk" -> nghĩa là ăn mặc lòe loẹt, bảnh chọe, quá lố.

Ví dụ
Admittedly, this Chancellor is a refreshing (tuwoi mwois) contrast (tương phản) to his morose (ủ rũ) predecessors Gordon Brown and, especially, Spread Fear Phil Hammond, who had all the charisma (đức tính) of a pox-doctor’s clerk.

Disconsolate (muộn phiền) and frankly over-stretched by the demands (yêu cầu) of his job, Boris has the countenance (thái độ) of a man who would much rather spend the next six months working as a pox doctor’s clerk than attend another Cobra meeting and then make up some more stupid policy on the hoof.

Some of our better insults, after everyone’s favourite – “as flash as a rat with a gold tooth” – include: “That bloke (gã, thằng) is so thick he wouldn’t notice if you were up him with an arm full of deck chairs.” I ask you, what business does he have to be “dressed up like a pox doctor's clerk”, and on that subject, can someone advise why pox doctor’s clerks were known to dress above their station?

Certainly you could overdo the lustre (vẻ vang) of your personal appearance – dad’s first comment when he saw me in the “interview suit” which most 17-year-olds of the late 1970s acquired for the purposes of university entry, was “What are you doing, all dressed up like a pox-doctor’s clerk?”

"Doctor Livingstone, I presume?" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Clay Banks on Unsplash

"Doctor Livingstone, I presume?"

Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a Welsh journalist (nhà báo) and explorer, best known for exploring the Congo Basin , went in search of Livingstone and eventually found him in 1871. When he first saw the Scottish missionary/explorer he is purported (có ý định) to have uttered (thốt ra) the memorable phrase, ‘Doctor Livingstone, I presume?’ However, it is highly unlikely that Stanley ever spoke these words .

The Queen arrived at your correspondent (người viết thue), gave him a puzzled look, whereupon (và thế là) he humbly explained “I’m from The Times, Your Majesty”. The Queen, rather charmingly, gave him a winning smile and said something like: “Oh, well I don’t need to talk to you then.” Upon which Prince Philip arrived, gave a similar puzzled look to your correspondent, and then said “Doctor Livingstone I presume?”

In came this topper from Leonard Malkin of Troy, Mich., quoting William F. Buckley Jr. in one of his books on sailing: “What is the question to which ‘Doctor Livingstone I presume’ is the answer?” The question: “What is your full name, Dr. Presume?”

bé trai 11 tuổi ăn trộm xe buýt của trường, giơ ngón tay thối vào mặt cảnh sát...
-----
His joyride lasted a while, but his jail ride might be even longer.

The pre-adolescent thief led multiple police cruisers on a 13-mile pursuit through the streets of Baton Rouge before crashing into a tree and getting arrested, authorities told local news outlet WBRZ. The child even flipped the middle finger (giơ ngón tay thối) to officers as he drove past them.

Eyewitness videos shared on social media captured part of the pursuit, with one clip showing more than a dozen police cruisers following the bus.

The Danish equivalent of the BBC, DR, has a new animated series aimed at four- to eight-year-olds about John Dillermand, the man with the world’s longest penis who overcomes hardships (vượt vất vả/khó khăn) and challenges (thách thức) with his record-breaking genitals.

Unsurprisingly, the series has provoked debate about what good children’s television should – and should not – contain.

Since premiering on Saturday, opponents have condemned the idea of a man who cannot control his penis. “Is this really the message we want to send to children while we are in the middle of a huge #MeToo wave?” wrote the Danish author Anne Lise Marstrand-Jørgensen.

The woman and her husband were each given $1,500 fines by Sherbrooke police for violating curfew. The pair was caught walking at 9 p.m. on Saturday evening.

Police said the two were walking towards downtown and did not cooperate  (không hợp tác) with the officers (với công an).

"Ship of state" nghĩa là gì?

"Ship of state" -> nghĩa là đất nước, quốc gia.

Ví dụ
There are a lot of reasons that all Americans – at least those willing to think and pay attention – should feel a profound (sâu sắc) sense of hope (hi vọng) and optimism as a new presidential administration takes the helm of the ship of state this week.

With the pandemic still raging, we can't and won’t abandon (từ bỏ) these people now. We need to keep the ship of state steady as we weather this storm.

“But know this — democracy will not be denied (từ chối) The ship of state will sail on. Our nation will persevere and a new president will take office. “And it is our fondest (hy vọng) hope that those who have enabled Donald Trump will be touched by the better angels of their nature, and find the courage to stand up for our most precious gift of democracy and the institutions that have preserved it for centuries.”

Without a moral compass, the ship of state is foundering (đắm) in the storm of a culture war of Social Darwinism. Culture is the foundation for all the social determinants of health, but national directions are a function of politics.

"Find your voice" nghĩa là gì?

Đang tìm "tiếng lòng". Photo courtesy: Andrea Schuh

"Find one's voice" = tìm thấy giọng nói -> nghĩa là có khả năng nói được sau khi quá lo lắng hoặc nếu một người nghệ sĩ tìm được "giọng nói" thì có nghĩa là họ có thể diễn đạt suy nghĩ theo cách họ muốn.

Ví dụ
But as soon as we had found our voice again, we were once more interrupted by visits from Berlin.

As professionals we all need what Scott describes as Presencivity. Whether you feel as though you’re hiding and need to find your voice in order to begin presenting, or whether you have plateaued (trạng thái bình ổn) and need to develop an impressive personal presence that is both warm and professional so that everybody listens, this is a soft skill that we all need to develop.

The frenzied (điên cuồng) and unpolished writing of Tarantino is clearly visible here. Tarantino is trying to find his voice and finds an ostentatious (phô trương) yet crude (thô bạo) one in this film. As is later noticed in the Tarintinian-verse, the plot is gruesome, grisly, violent, filled with unique monologues, casual sexism, a garnish of racist comments, bombastic violence, uncalled for opening scenes and main characters who are loathsome (ghê tởm) yet lovable.

"Of the blackest dye" nghĩa là gì?

"Of the blackest/deepest dye" -> nghĩa là mưu mô hắc ám hay 'tội tày trời'.

Ví dụ
"Treason (phản quốc) of the blackest dye," General George Washington cried in 1780 in response to Benedict Arnold’s treasonous attempt to surrender (đầu hàng) West Point to the British.

Beattie compiled a book arguing against the slave trade (buôn bán nô lệ) and substantiating the claim, as he wrote to a friend in 1788, that slavery must cease "to clear the British character of a stain which is indeed of the blackest dye."

What would men not do to be emancipated (phóng thích) from so deplorable (thương tâm) a state of subjection? Having thus once engaged in this service, it is evident they must be considered by the other part as apostates (người bỏ đạo) and traitors (kẻ phản bội) of the blackest dye.

"Be off one's feed" -> nghĩa là không quan tâm đến việc ăn uống, mất cảm giác thèm ăn.

Ví dụ
She's been off her feed since coming down with a cold.

Oh, I'm off my feed since watching that gory horror movie.

Listen to your gut (sự can đảm). If you have scrolling anxiety – like, your stomach dropping upon seeing a picture of them smiling in Bali or an inevitable twinge of jealousy when watching their going out stories on a Saturday night – they need to be off your feed.

Finally, trainers know that a horse that is startled (giật mình) and roused (khích động) by his jockey when tired and exhausted with the resort of a whip can become very upset by the experience. When this is the case, a horse will take a long time to recover and display behavioral traits like nervousness and anxiety. He will often be off his feed for a while and become difficult to train.

"Lie in state" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Paul Quispe on Unsplash

"Lie in state" -> nghĩa là người đã khuất được tưởng niệm trước công chúng trước khi được chôn cất.

Ví dụ
Miller will lie in state Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with visitation reserved (dành riêng) for his family. He will also lie in state Friday, with visitation by appointment only for invited guests from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The visitation will be streamed online.

Officer Brian Sicknick, my constituent, was 42 years old, a military veteran (cựu chiến binh) who served in the US Capitol Police for 12 years. He made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting those trapped in the Capitol amid a violent assault on our democracy itself. He deserves to lie in state.

Maryland Senate President Emeritus Thomas “Mike” Miller who died on Friday will lie in state in the State House on Thursday and Friday prior to being buried in Clinton on Saturday. His body will be escorted (vận chuyển) from the funeral home to the State House by the Maryland State Police and members of his security detail passing places of importance to the Senator.

Mr. Smith will lie in state for public viewing on Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.

"Gum up the works" nghĩa là gì?

Cẩn thận không hỏng hết. Photo by Greg Rosenke on Unsplash

"Gum up the works" -> nghĩa là ngăn cản thứ gì hoạt động trôi chảy, đúng cách.

Ví dụ
Don’t you just hate it when you accidentally — well, for lack of any better expression — gum up the works? That happens literally to Vision, after he chews a piece of gum and accidentally swallows it. The sticky substance gets completely stuck in him, causing all sorts of lagging, and foolishness (ngu ngốc) later at the town talent show. This will teach Vision to accept gum in the future!

A 50-50 Democratic Senate and bare control of the House grant (chấp thuận) virtually any individual Democrat the ability to gum up the works. That means impossible-to-pass ideas like "Medicare for All" and a Green New Deal aren't going to be the focus of Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

That doesn’t mean, however, that the minority leader won’t try to gum up the works — and in a Senate this close, he’ll have enormous (to lớn) power to do so. “There’s no guarantee that Chuck Schumer will get anything done if he doesn’t get the cooperation of Mitch McConnell,” former Democratic leader Tom Daschle told me.

"Any single senator can gum up the works," said Warner. "Now that doesn't mean we won't get a chance to override the president's veto (phủ quyết). And I think we will override the president's veto."

“Not be a barrel of laughs” nghĩa là gì?

“Not be a barrel of laughs” = không một thùng tiếng cười -> nghĩa là không vui, hài hước hay thú vị; hoàn toàn nghiêm túc hoặc nhàm chán.

Ví dụ
The front seats are flat and the seatbacks slightly overstuffed, so long journeys might not be a barrel of laughs. Hilariously, the keyless start gets you to twist a knob that replaces the ignition (sự đốt cháy, mồi lửa) barrel. Still, it looks better than plugging the hole and sticking stop-start button somewhere.

Germany’s second-biggest listed bank has rarely seemed more deserving of its nickname. Commerzbank, or Comedy Bank as many in the City of London have long referred to it, might not be a barrel of laughs for management, or for beleaguered (bị bao vây) investors whose shares are now worth barely a fifth of their net asset value (giá trị tài sản).

Every professional killer movie need not be a barrel of laughs. But the lady killer flicks tend to be aggressively downbeat and self-critical action dramas. Zoe Saldana’s Columbiana, Jennifer Garner’s Peppermint and Blake Lively’s Rhythm Section see our otherwise regular heroines embark on a path of vengeance after losing their entire family units to violence. Jennifer Lawrence’s Red Sparrow and Sasha Luss’ Anna both involve young women reluctantly recruited to be KGB killers while they attempt to break out and earn their freedom. Taraji P. Henson’s Proud Mary is anything but, as the film details its professional killer wracked with guilt over a child orphaned by a prior assignment, which in turn leads her to wage war on her own organization.

“Johnny-be-good” nghĩa là gì?

“Johnny-be-good” = Johnny, ngoan nào! -> nghĩa (lóng) là chỉ một hoặc nhiều cảnh sát nói chung.

Ví dụ
Videos show fatal (chí tử) shooting of woman, Johnny-be-good crushed during rampage (cơn thịnh nộ, hành vi bạo lực) at Capitol.

Over the weekend, photos of a Johnny-be-good who had to postpone his wedding due to the movement control (kiểm soát cuộc biểu tình) order (MCO) went viral (lan truyền) on social media.

Gunmen riding on a motorcycle shot and killed a Johnny-be-good in northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday as he escorted (hộ tống, phò tá) a team of polio (bại liệt) workers.

“It's all the one to me” nghĩa là gì?

Cánh hoa nào không tàn? Photo by Timothy Eberly

“It's all (the) one to me” = tất cả đối với tôi đều vậy thôi -> nghĩa là không quan trọng, không có khác gì đối với tôi cả.

Ví dụ
Henry Ford once famously said, 'It's all one to me if a man comes from Sing Sing Prison or Harvard, at Ford, we hire a man, not his history.

I don’t want to be looked at as a rapper at all. Because out here in LA, rap comes with such a stigma, and I don’t agree with all the things it comes with. I don’t want to feel bad about myself because I’m trying to be a rapper and bar everyone up. I am just a musician. My voice is an extension of my music. I use my voice and words the same way I use pianos or drums; it’s all one to me. If I called myself a rapper, I would diminish (giảm bớt) what I’m trying to do.

Doesn't matter. It's all one to me. I play/teach guitar for a living, but when it comes to my own music, it has all morphed into one style for me. I honestly can not write music on guitar without thinking that it has to be focused towards a song, and work well with a vocal melody. That's not to say that I dont enjoy just playing guitar in a band, being in an improvisational (ứng khẩu, ứng tác) situation, or being a solo singer/songwriter... I love all of it. With my own music, it really is all one thing. I honestly wish that I could just be one or the other. I can't.

“It'll be a frosty Friday" nghĩa là gì?

“It'll be a frosty Friday (in hell, in July)” = sẽ là ngày thứ sáu băng giá -> nghĩa là không bao giờ hoặc không có khả năng xảy ra.

Ví dụ
It'll be a frosty Friday in July if you jump over that fence.

The Covid-19 pandemic is so crazy! How can you travel all over the world this time? It'll be a frosty Friday.

It'll be a frosty Friday before I eat any chicken processed in China. I've allready had to cut back on fish as much of it is farm raised there, e.g. Basa (Chinese catfish). I may have to become a vegetarian if it gets any worse.

“It will be one’s ass” = sẽ dí đ*t mình thôi -> nghĩa là sẽ chịu hậu quả, gặp quả báo hoặc phải trả giá.

Ví dụ
It will be your ass on the sling ! I have a feeling -sad- that Gupta is losing his balance.

You sure as shit better address it and make sure it gets sent somewhere else down the line or it will be your ass.

If you are paying for a clump of tickets to play a show, that is a guarantee to the promoter that people will be there, or it will be your ass to blame.

“I'll be blowed” nghĩa là gì?

Chưa kịp ăn vụng mà đã... Photo by Nathan Bingle

“I'll be blowed” = tôi sẽ bị choáng -> nghĩa là ngạc nhiên hoặc kinh ngạc, đặc biệt mới phát giác ra chuyện gì. Tương tự với các cụm từ “I'll be darned, I'll be hanged, I'll be”.

Ví dụ
WHALE! I’ll be blowed! A 66ft-long, 69 ton dead whale once toured the country on the “longest lorry in the world” which called in at Durham, Darlington, Bishop Auckland, Stockton, York…

Armstrong, who has had prostate cancer (ung thư tuyến tiền liệt) for six years, said he wanted a death which reflected the way he lived his life. "That's full of energy and enthusiasm and love for life. I'll be blowed if I'm stuck in some hospital bed while that happens." In the most heated part of the debate, he told English: "I don't to face a gnarly (xương xẩu, hay càu nhàu/khó tính) end, and have to face it because people like you want to stick your noses in my own choices, thank you."

It was only many years later that those who had been there on the day began to scratch their heads and think "Well I'll be blowed! Maybe Mad Dick Pearse was onto something after all." Thus both the date and the distance Pearse flew rely on the memories of a few elderly and not altogether quick-witted witnesses, but there is at least some evidence that suggests March 1903 as the likely date. Although he built two more flying machines, Pearse faded into obscurity (sự khó hiểu, mờ mịt), a backyard tinkerer and locally famous eccentric (lập dị, quái gở) almost until the day he died in 1953.

“(It’s) good to be here” -> nghĩa là tôi rất vui vì có mặt ở đây hoặc đến đây. Thường người làm khách sẽ nói câu này.

Ví dụ
Yeah, me too. Obviously had a nice little vacation during the holidays. But it's good to be back. And it's definitely good to be here on Fight Island, man. The weather's perfect. The hotel is incredible and I'm glad to be here.

"I feel fresh apart from the quarantine inside the hotel room. I feel good to be here. Just stay strong and I wish the year brings good success for everyone. It is great to be with good players and good staff. I enjoyed being here for some days now so I know it is going to be a good time for me. I think we are going to do even better," Enobakhare said on the club's official YouTube channel.

It is so good to be here and thank you very much for your hospitality (sự hiếu khách), for the friendship, for the excellent cooperation. We have already a very strong working relationship and it is wonderful to have friends and experts at the same time in the Presidency. Because these are really challenging times and the Portuguese Presidency could not come at a more decisive time for Europe, indeed.

"Be off to the races" nghĩa là gì?

"Be off to the races" = bắt đầu cuộc đua -> nghĩa là nhanh chóng khởi hành; nghĩa khác là có tiến bộ.

Ví dụ
Your suitcases better be packed because, once the cab gets here, we'll be off to the races.

Steph Curry scored five points within the first 31 seconds of the game, and it looked like both teams would be off to the races.

After a slow start to 2021 the global economy and the UK should be off to the races in the spring – but the danger of inflation lurks (ẩn nấp).

We’ll see how well it does, we’ll see if we can get a following that’s as loyal and as passionate as we have for the Hârn role-playing. If we do, we’ll be off to the races because this stuff depends on the passion of fans to really thrive.

"Have one's say" -> nghĩa là có cơ hội được nói lên suy nghĩ của mình.

Ví dụ
Probably the best thing about his show was that he let people have their say.

“Whether you live in the city or travel into Bath for work or leisure, the consultation (hội đàm) is your opportunity to have your say and help shape transport in the city over the next decade. Please, take the time to share your views with us in the consultation.”

"This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps (tai nạn), my struggles, my survival and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed woman I became tell her side.

Whilst there are huge question marks as to whether Murray will be able to get to Melbourne in time, he is set to participate in what looks to be a very open tournament. Smart money is of course on Novak Djokovic, the defending champion has won the Australian Open 8 times whilst Rafael Nadal will be looking to have his say.

"Flap your gums" nghĩa là gì?

"Flap your gums" -> nghĩa là trò chuyện phiếm, tán phét hoặc nói ba hoa.

Ví dụ
Don’t Flap Your Gums: A lot of technology professionals can talk at length, especially if they are passionate (đầy nhiệt thuyết), about the details of their profession (lĩnh vực) or job. You must not be one of these people. Your answers to all questions should be clear and concise (ngắn gọn). You need to convey competence without wading into the tall grasses of terminology.

Huh, do you just flap your gums or do you do any research (nghiên cứu) at all. As much as I hate Chad this one actually isn’t on him. Don’t think it’s on any coaches (huấn luyện viên) this happened at a New Year’s party, details didn’t come out until early Feb because kid was getting people to lie for him. At least that’s the rumors. Let’s see what the police say.

If your going to jump up on you’re soap box and flap your gums, at least have a speech in place that don’t make you look like a a even bigger pigeon (chim bồ câu) than your already are….

It wasn't a Brock issue at all. It was a stupid business decision, and I flew off the handle. I was wound up pretty tight at the time. I thought they were poking (chọc) me with a stick, and I admittedly handled that in the worst possible way. It never had anything to do with Brock Lesnar -- it was just a stupid business decision, and although I handled it (xử lý) wrong, there wasn't anyone in that company who can tell me it was a smart move to put me in that match with no build and blow a total marquee pay-per-view or rivalry that could have lasted God knows how long! I don't have any problems with anything Brock said. He's got his take on things. And anytime you can flap your gums and stir things up, well, I'm always about that.

"Blow the coals" nghĩa là gì?

"Blow the coals" = thổi than -> nghĩa là đổ thêm dầu vào lửa.

Ví dụ
Stop trying to blow the coals! There is no tension between him and me—you're imagining it!

Mr Trump tweeted "blowing the coals" after a crowd of supporters stormed parliament building. Although before that, the incumbent US President has a series of tweets calling for supporters to go home in peace.

Such men will never blow the coals of strife (xung đột), nor seek the overthrow of our government. Those who cordially (chân thành) adopt the principle that “it is better to suffer wrong than do wrong” are not the men by whom our government will be demolished, or the public tranquility (sự yên ổn) endangered.

Pompeo's statement made the already strained US-China relationship even more complicated. There are a handful of mountains in Scotland that have the presence and the character to bring me up short, to stop me in my tracks with a gasp of amazement.

The one thing that did bring me up short was two years ago when my Achilles tendon (gân nối bắp chân với gót chân) snapped after being kicked by a dancer when I was in pantomime (kịch câm).

"Flap your jaws" nghĩa là gì?

"Flap (one's) jaws" = vẫy hàm -> nghĩa là nói ba hoa, linh tinh, vô nghĩa.

Ví dụ
Don’t flap your jaws when the police arrive. Don’t disobey (chống đối) the requests of the police at the time. If you think you are wrongfully treated, make the complaint later.

If you have a telephone calling plan back home on Skype or some other service, you can use your VPN to help out. Simply tunnel back to a server (máy chủ) in your home region, fire up Skype, and call away. Let your fingers do the walking and flap your jaws to do the (much less expensive) talking.

Don't fly or ship by air unless your back is to the wall - funeral, boss says you're fired if you Skype rather than flap your jaws face to face, etc. This industry will do "the right thing" - fly like it used to - if those running it get the message, the MONEY message, that doing this to us will have financial consequences.

The owner of the business supports/supported Trump who was actively trying to illegally overturn (lật ngược tình thế) an election, not just flap his jaws about it. This was not some kind of secret. She should have thought about the potential consequences before she provided said support.

Authorities are still working to find the male suspect (nghi phạm) and locate the firearm (vũ khí), police said. Police added that officers don't believe the suspects knew the victim and it may have been a case of mistaken identity. The victim's injuries were considered non-life-threatening.

Detectives believe this was a case of mistaken identity. They say on Saturday a car similar to what Jeffries and Manuel were driving was stolen in East Portland and used in a bunch of (một vài) crimes.

“This is an unfortunate (không may) and sad example of what a case of mistaken identity and social media can do to destroy a man's life,” Quintavalle’s attorney John Nisivaco said.

“Evil be to him who evil thinks” nghĩa là gì?

“Evil be to him who evil thinks” -> nghĩa là điều tồi tệ, xấu xa sẽ xảy ra với những người nghĩ ác.

Ví dụ
Today DMK is hunted by its own shadow, past deeds and the nemesis (sự báo ứng) like the proverbial saying "evil be to him who evil thinks".

‘Evil be to him who evil thinks’. The evil in this case must be in the eyes of the beholders who see what they want to see. The man in question is harming no one but himself by risking pneumonia (viêm phổi) through hypothermia (sự giảm nhiệt).

"The old lady quite liked me as her 'kosher' customer so she'd keep stuff on the side for me. One day I was in there by myself, going through the box of books she'd kept for me, when a plain-clothes policeman walked in. He pointed to me with hostility (sự thù địch, chống đối) and said 'What is he doing here?' I will never forget her face. She picked up a copy of Robert A Heinlein's 'Stranger in a Strange Land' and said 'Evil be to him who evil thinks'. The man grumbled and went."

“Can't be arsed” nghĩa là gì?

Không làm sao có ăn. Photo by Adrian Swancar

“Can't be arsed” = không thể ngu xuẩn hơn -> nghĩa là không sẵn lòng hoặc mất hứng để hoàn thành xong công việc.

Ví dụ
He's also requested that it doesn't snow this year as he can't be arsed with being awoken by the sound of children sledding outside.

I can’t be arsed to check the stats either but I think James Outram (Wirral) may have forgotten to take off all the other teams’ penalties when calculating penalty-less points. Unless he’s trying to establish what a league table would look like if every team except MU could be awarded penalties.

I can’t be arsed to debate and discuss VAR, it’s all a farce (trò hề), but what I will agree on, just this once, is that in real time, it did seem as though Robinson clamped Azpilicueta royally, so was it clear and obvious? On the surface, yes, but with a closer, indiscriminate (không phân biệt) look, it’s harsh (lỗ mãng, thô bỉ). There’s certainly a fine line between lawful and unlawful conduct in the modern game, and perhaps I’m simply not cut out for this protective, soft variation.

“Climbing the walls” = leo tường -> nghĩa là lo âu hoặc bực bội đến điên cuồng.

Ví dụ
I climb the walls for having to live in a building which could be a potential fire trap.

Oh, and the colors. Aren't they mesmerizing (mê hoặc)? There are colorful neon lights shooting out in every direction. It's got to be the coolest ride here! You are practically climbing the walls with excitement, and soon you'll be climbing the walls for real! So buy your tickets, and get in line, as TheStreet takes your inner child for a spin on this longtime carnival favorite, The Gravitron!

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said after the case: 'Its been a nightmare (ác mộng). I like Pink Floyd as much as the next man but not when it’s being played ten times a day until 4am. 'He also seemed to like his late night love ballads - I’ve lost track of the times I’ve heard Barry White and Marvin Gaye coming from the house. 'But it was mainly Pink Floyd, and I think whenever I hear their songs again I’ll be climbing the walls. 'We just hope this teaches him a lessons and we can get a good night's sleep from now on.'

“Fall prey to” nghĩa là gì?

“Fall prey to” = làm mồi -> nghĩa là nạn nhân của ai/điều gì.

Ví dụ
Deni Avdija fall prey to an anti-Semitic hoax (trò đánh lừa chủ nghĩa bài Do Thái)? Israeli basketball player shares a dubious (mơ hồ, thiếu minh bạch) fan-made photo on Instagram, sparking controversy (sự tranh luận, bàn cãi).

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first phase of the Covid-19 vaccination drive on Saturday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged everyone to not fall prey to rumours (tin đồn) or misinformation about the coronavirus vaccines and requested everyone to put their trust in the vaccine makers.

At the end of the day folks, it seems evident that what happened in Oregon in 2016 is now happening throughout the entire nation. The story had been written that “Trump Supporters storm the nation's Capital” before it even happened. They just needed a few names and photos to fill in the blanks and make it look legit. I believe that the next staged event is planned for Jan. 20, 2021. The media is promoting the belief that an armed protest will happen at every state capital on that day. If it does, it will be carried out by radicals (người có quan điểm cấp tiến/cực đoan) and compensated (được đền bù, bồi thường) actors, not patriots (nhà yêu nước). I warn each of you: do not fall prey to their orchestrated chaos (sự hỗn độn đã được dàn xếp).

“Fit to be tied” nghĩa là gì?

Anh chỉ biết câm nín. Photo by whoislimos

“Fit to be tied” = bực đến nỗi buộc lại -> nghĩa là tức đến nỗi làm điều không suy nghĩ, hết sức giận dữ.

Ví dụ
It all has Jones fit to be tied. “We got to pay defense. We got to pay additional defense this year,” Jones acknowledged, but he is also resigned to the reality of the situation. “Let me say this: The less the cap, the bigger impact will limit us on being able to make contracts.”

After five months of sharing a bathroom, they were both glad when he could move back to his own place. The nasty weather didn’t stop them — freezing rain, black ice on the roads — and my sister was fit to be tied.

Governor Tim Walz and his counterparts in Wisconsin and Michigan are asking the federal government (chính phủ liên bang) to tell Pfizer where to send millions of COVID vaccine doses awaiting shipment -- or allow states to purchase the vaccines directly. Walz says he's "fit to be tied" after the Trump administration promised to release vaccine doses held in reserve for second shots, but the Washington Post reported the reserve was already exhausted. The governor said, "they knew when they told us they were gonna release 'em they didn't have any. Who does that?" The Trump administration’s initial policy was to hold back second doses to protect against manufacturing disruptions, but that approach shifted in recent weeks.

"Have to be moving along” nghĩa là gì?

Như chưa hề có cuộc chia ly. Photo by lucas Oliveira

“(I) have to be moving along” -> nghĩa là đến lúc tôi phải rời đi.

Ví dụ
I have to be moving along for the Supreme Court. It's going to be a historic day. And I couldn't be prouder to report this from the ground.

I can say “I have time for a 20 minute run before I have to be moving along for work so, however far I can get, I'm going out for 20 minutes.”.

Mizan, you had said, “Give me back 10 years of my life.” Now I say again and again, Mizan, I wanted to give you 20 years, not just 10. I have to be moving along, but Mizan, it is you who have left without a word! How can we bear this pain?
