"From the ridiculous to the sublime" nghĩa là gì?

Từ con vịt xấu xí trở thành thiên nga tươi đẹp. Photo by hp koch on Unsplash

"From the ridiculous to the sublime" -> nghĩa là từ điều nực cười thành điều tinh tế, tuyệt vời.

Ví dụ
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils went from the ridiculous to the sublime - and very nearly back again as they once more came from behind to win away from home, beating Sheffield United 3-2 at Bramall Lane to move up to sixth in the Premier League table.

There was no convincing (thuyết phục) official explanation and speculation (suy đoán) went from the ridiculous to the sublime, ranging from the theory one rider was genuinely ill and the other in a sporting gesture decided to leave the championship tied by extending their absence to the final race day of 2020 scheduled to commence (mở đầu) in 24 hours.

Anthony Martial’s night against Everton went quickly from the ridiculous to the sublime. At first the Frenchman struggled to have an impact, and then when he did get a chance inside the penalty area he had a comical (hài hước) miscue (đánh trượt). Martial touched the ball with his wrong foot and before he could shoot, it trailed off for a goal kick.

In just one week, Wanderers lurched (lảo đảo) from the ridiculous to the sublime and back again, and it is fair to say that patience (kiên nhẫn) is wearing thin with this frightening inconsistency.

"How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" nghĩa là gì?

"How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?"

Perhaps the vaccines will render (làm cho) all our problems as antique as the question of how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. But more than half of the French say they are opposed (phản đối) to vaccination.

Among the many philosophical (triết học) questions asked by medieval scholars was the following: how many angels can dance on the head of a pin? Logically angels are insubstantial (không có thật) and cannot possibly dance, let alone (nữa là) on the head of a pin.

As an aside, this used to be a somewhat what interesting blog, now its just repost of other peoples tweets. But like most leftist (phái tả) bubbles these days they freak out at any thing that might call into question it's dogma (tín điều). So I may or may not "get the fuck out". Block me if you must and keep discussing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. Oh, and try to lighten up a is too short.

Lawyers and judges can be like medieval theologians and scholars pondering (suy nghĩ) how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. They can argue endlessly over stuff that really doesn’t matter in real life.

"After you, my dear Alphonse" nghĩa là gì?

"After you, my dear Alphonse" = mời bạn trước, Alphonse yêu quý -> câu nói lịch sự dùng khi cả hai người đang làm việc giống nhau cùng lúc. Câu này có nguồn gốc từ hai người đàn ông lịch sự có tên Alphonse và Gaston trong cuốn truyện tranh Happy Hooligan từ những năm 1920.

Ví dụ
She cites "After You, My Dear Alphonse," in which Jackson pokes (trêu chọc) fun at a white woman's presumption that her son's Black friend is poor, and in need of food and clothing.

Opper died in 1937 and the strip faded (phai nhạt) from public visibility. However, the catchphrase “After you, my dear Alphonse” lived on. For many, it continues to this present day, used in situations when two people are being overly courteous (lịch sự) to each other or contemplating (suy ngẫm) how to return a shot down the middle of the tennis court.

“After you, my dear Alphonse,” was the thought that went through my mind. Then the general went down the line and put Chinese wings on us all. I could think of nothing as the general approached but the utter glee I felt that for a brief time at least my shirt was going to be gaudier (lòe loẹt) than Kiernan’s. The fact that it meant not a goddamn thing only added to my pleasure.

I promised Lisa not to get too after-you-my-dear-Alphonse in these framing (làm khung) posts. But I can’t sign off without telling you all that of the three Slate Movie Clubs it’s been my privilege (ân huệ) to host so far, this has been my very favorite (and, given how much fun they’ve all been, that’s praise indeed). I wish you all a wonderful year, both in the movies and out.

Phân phối vaccines chống Covid-19 như thế nào?

bằng xe đông lạnh vẫn thường để chở... tinh dịch bò nhé :)
The Covid-19 pandemic (đại dịch) has seen many companies pivot to (chuyển hướng) producing personal protective equipment, ventilators (máy thở), and masks (khẩu trang). Now the Indian bull semen (tinh dịch bò) industry is looking at whether its refrigerated supply network (chuỗi cung ứng đông lạnh)—known as the cold chain—can help with vaccine distribution efforts.

The Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna need to be kept at extremely low temperatures due to their mRNA genetic material. The AstraZeneca vaccine needs to be kept cold, but not as cold the other two. The tropical temperatures that cover much of India create a challenge (thách thức) to the upcoming (sắp tới) nationwide vaccination effort (nỗ lực tiêm chủng toàn quốc). It’s a logistical challenge the country’s bull semen industry is familiar with and wants to help solve.

"Show to advantage" nghĩa là gì?

"Show someone or something to advantage" -> nghĩa là phù hợp với lợi thế, thế mạnh của ai.

Ví dụ
Rain-softened ground didn’t help Caradoc’s well-backed bid for the John Smith’s Cup at York three weeks ago - in which he returned ninth behind Sinjaari - but Danny Tudhope’s mount has everything in place to show to advantage this afternoon.

Christians have always sought the smile of Our Lady, this smile which medieval (xa xưa) artists were able to represent with such marvelous skill and to show to advantage.

Maca had a strong vision for how she wanted our protagonists (nhân vật chính) to look and worked with me to really show them to advantage. I did have a lot of freedom in the environments and minor characters, and it was a lot of fun to try to match the palettes (màu sắc riêng) to the emotion of each scene.

State portraits cannot show to advantage in reproduction, but many of the items – miniature (thu nhỏ) portraits, prints, small artefacts (đồ tạo tác) and medical and scientific instruments, books, botanical works and herbaria, maps and documents – lend themselves well to plates in a book where they can be studied more easily than on the wall or in a case.

"There's no show without Punch" nghĩa là gì?

Không ai đến thì anh chơi solo!! Photo by Elizeu Dias on Unsplash

"There's no show without Punch" = chương trình không thể bắt đầu nếu thiếu Punch -> nghĩa là sự kiện, buổi biểu diễn không thể tổ chức, diễn ra như ý muốn được nếu thiếu người, yếu tố quan trọng nhất.

Ví dụ
Majella has added the perfect yin to Daniel’s yang, in terms of public appeal, unbending (không thể uốn cong) the stiffness (cứng nhắc), and here she pops her head in and out every so often, sometimes waving wildly. “There’s no show without Punch,” Daniel observes – either wryly or fondly; it’s hard to figure out.

Of course, when it comes to the rich taking ordinary (thông thường) folk for fools – there’s no show without Punch... so enter Donald Trump. We’ve finally found out that the President paid a whopping £587 in federal income taxes in both 2016 and 2017.

Still, there’s no show without punch and the campaign (chiến dịch) has attracted support from many golfers, along with Victorian Liberal MP Tim Smith –who has also urged the culling of flying fox bats – and cricketer Shane Warne, who did, in fairness offer his spin in more measured tones.

Didn’t bother (phiền) watching the Tory tub of lard debate on Channel 4 with the repulsive (đáng ghét), Leftie snob Krishnan Guru-wossname, who once refused to shake hands with a friend of mine — a brilliant journalist, far more accomplished than this posturing (điệu bộ) third-rate Jon Snow wannabe — because he was suspected of liking Mrs Thatcher. Why did former Brexiteer Gove and the rest of them go along with it? There’s no show without Punch.
