"Lick her chops" nghĩa là gì?

"Lick (one's) chops" = liếm mép -> nghĩa là thể hiện sự háo hức, thiếu kiên nhẫn, nhất là khi ăn.

Ví dụ
That’s value that would probably make Warren Buffett lick his chops.

Margaux the French bulldog couldn't help but lick his chops at the thought of a beer brewed for dogs.

Adding a veteran like Beasley on a cheap deal makes a ton of sense. I think Beasley being he was already paid once would lick his chops to play for Pete Carroll.

It’s all for the cause of great taste, I must say, because these are truly fun and delicious Tex-Mex-y nachos. I eat a pizza-pie-slice’s worth, lick my chops like a drooling Bulldog, and call my friend Marie.

"Flap (one's) chops/gums" = vỗ miệng -> nghĩa là nói chuyện phiếm, nói xấu.

Ví dụ
Stop flapping your chops—I need some quiet so I can think!

Whenever Anna starts to flap her chops, I can't get in a word!

Always read the players mentality to see what state they are in, whether to stop asking questions and flap their chops. When the director is ordered to pressure, he will have to apply pressure accordingly, by over-pressure the player stubs.

What was the reason he gave for frequently running away from home when quarreling with his wife was: jealousy without cause, hit the child, disrespecting her husband, do not worry about home meals, don't know to take care of yourself and flap her chops.

"Fall on evil days" nghĩa là gì?

"Fall on evil days" = trúng ngày đen đủi -> nghĩa là gặp rủi ro hay xui xẻo.

Ví dụ
May all be happy. May all be free from disease. May all see the wellbeing of all. May none fall on evil days.

Pathetic lives, too sick to cure. There is no medication, we fall on evil days, we are walking evil ways. Hand in hand towards hell.

Our opportunities are great but let me warn you that when power outstrips ability (vượt quá khả năng), we will fall on evil days. We should develop competence and ability which would help us to utilise (tận dụng) the opportunities which are now open to us.

"Fall into depression" nghĩa là gì?

"Fall into depression" -> nghĩa là bị trầm cảm, tuyệt vọng; nghĩa khác là thời kỳ kinh tế suy giảm nghiêm trọng, đói nghèo lan rộng và tỷ lệ thất nghiệp cao.

Ví dụ
To make sure the elderly people who are taken out of their day care centers do not fall into depression from social isolation, Nevada Senior Services is asking their staff to call and check in with them at home.

Study shows that people who use social media for more than 5 hours a day are more likely to fall into depression compared to those who are online for about 120 minutes a day. Depression caused by social media can take only 6 months to occur.

People shun (xa lánh) them; do not invite them into events or parties even though the disease is completely non-contagious (không lây), and may even make sarcastic remarks about their appearances. That is why more than half of psoriasis patients fall into depression.

"Built on sand" nghĩa là gì?

"Built on sand" = xây trên cát -> nghĩa là xây dựng, thành lập trên nền tảng kém vững chắc.

Ví dụ
A shaky foundation (cơ sở) built on sand looks like this: Operators get too busy and distracted adding all the new digital ordering channels, contactless solutions (giải pháp), and other pandemic-friendly tools — and forget that if these solutions don't work well with your core foundational transaction engine (the POS) and other vital technologies in your stack — the guest and operator experience will continue to suffer long-term.

The biggest bee in my bonnet (mũ) about the game is that all we seem to care about is Super League, the highest level. But if we don’t have any foundations, it’s built on sand and it’s going to collapse (sụp đổ).

They were never going to make money, they had some funds (quỹ) that they were willing to gamble - just for the fun and for the buzz of it. That was short termism (thuật ngữ) at its best and at its very worst. Yes, it was great at the time but it was never going to last, their ambition for a magic carpet ride was built on sand and to a degree was illusionary.

The names and functions (chức năng) of the three branches (nhánh) of government, how bills are passed and how election systems are supposed to work. The USA used to have an excellent reputation for education. We cannot build on sand anymore.

"Rope of sand" nghĩa là gì?

"Rope of sand" = sợi dây bằng cát -> nghĩa là không khỏe mạnh, vững chắc hay ổn định như trông bề ngoài.

Ví dụ
The politicians are like magicians (ảo thuật gia). They control the common man’s will (ý chí). Depending upon them is like relying upon a rope of sand. There is a perception that only politicians can save the country since it is though people elect them.

Victorian traveller, Richard Ford, said that Spain is "a bundle of local units tied together by a rope of sand". And the truth is that a century and half later, many Spaniards are still arguing (bàn bạc) how to shape a nation, whilst not asking for total independence (độc lập).

"DoNo and Centerplan's claims are connected to the facts by a rope of sand. They fail because no reasonable (hợp lý) fact-finder could make the desired connection and rule in their favor," Moukawsher said. "Even viewing what they have submitted in the light most favorable to them, they have offered nothing to show genuine issues of material fact to be decided at trial."

“The Southern Baptist Convention, all they can do is give guidelines (nguyên tắc chỉ đạo),” Griffis said. “The adage when it was founded a long time ago was we’re basically held together by a rope of sand. We are Southern Baptist because we choose to be.”

"Who'd have thunk it?" nghĩa là gì?

"Who'd have thunk it?" nghĩa là 'ai mà ngờ được chứ?'; -> bày tỏ sự bất ngờ hoặc mỉa mai với nghĩa trái ngược.

Ví dụ
Who’d have thunk it? The Giants need Daniel Jones. The offense (dàn phòng vệ) has come to a halt without him and the Ravens are already ridiculously tough (cứng cỏi).

If I had offered you a bet (cá cược) that West Ham and Southampton would both sit higher in the table than Manchester City after twelve rounds of play, I’m guessing you would have taken that wager. Who’d have thunk it, right? Well that’s exactly what happened this weekend, when the Hammers and the Saints both won, while City could only manage a draw from the Manchester Derby.

“Who’d have thunk it?” In general, he said, “the philosophy (triết lý) is that right now, I don’t care what we did last year. What are values within the confines (ranh giới) of what we can do right now? What can we do to achieve them? And how can we do it it in a way that becomes memorable?”

Booms and busts in the economy, stock market surges (dâng trào) and crashes, interest (số dư) rates at 17 per cent or zero per cent. As they say, who’d have thunk it?

"Youth is wasted on the young" nghĩa là gì?

Học không chơi đánh rơi tuổi trẻ :D Photo by Alexis Brown on Unsplash

"Youth is wasted on the young" = thanh niên lãng phí tuổi trẻ -> nghĩa là người trẻ không hiểu giá trị, đánh giá cao những điều tốt đẹp nên khi về già sẽ khao khát hơn.

Ví dụ
George Bernard Shaw said that youth is wasted on the young. As millennial and Generation Z consumers begin to flex their financial might, banks cannot overlook (lờ đi) these ‘youths’.

Whoever said youth is wasted on the young didn't know Salenah Cartier. The 17-year-old Kingwood resident has an unwavering (vững vàng) persistence (kiên trì), entrepreneurial wit, and now, she has two college degrees. She is the youngest person to graduate from the University of Houston in 2020 after earning her bachelor's degree in psychology and a certification in corporate entrepreneurship from the C.T. Bauer College of Business.

'They say youth is wasted on the young and whilst (đôi khi) that's not true for everybody - like Emma - it is true for me because I matured very late,' he said. 'I feel very lucky that I have someone like Emma at this age, it's changed my life and I hope I can give her the kind of help and support that takes a lot of time to discover and amass (tích lũy).'

Anyone who believes that youth is wasted on the young, or that all young people have swallowed (nuốt chửng) the canard (tin vịt) that voting doesn’t matter, has never encountered PUSH Buffalo’s Street Team.

"Bronx cheer" nghĩa là gì?

Typical New Yorker. Photo courtesy: Angela Martini

"Bronx cheer" = chúc mừng kiểu Bronx -> nghĩa là bĩu môi và tạo ra một âm thanh bằng cách lè lưỡi và thổi để chế giễu hoặc coi thường người khác. Cụm từ bắt nguồn từ một sự kiện thể thao tại khu Bronx của thành phố New York.

Ví dụ
So, instead, Ivanka will carry her father’s political brand forward. But with New York giving the Trumps a “Bronx cheer,” Ivanka’s likely launch site will be Florida — a state her father won in 2016 and 2020, and the home of his glitzy (phù phiếm) Mar-a-Lago resort and country club.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s messaging about how to control the virus has been shaky at times. And he certainly deserves a Bronx cheer for attending a birthday party for his political adviser with several other families, defying his public advice to social distance. It didn’t help that the event took place at the French Laundry, a chic Napa Valley restaurant.

As everybody on this call and everybody in the financial world knows, the Fed reacted very swiftly, by Fed standards, by cutting interest rates this week. The markets were happy for about 15 minutes, and then they gave it a Bronx cheer. I think that illustrates a couple of things: It illustrates that feeding the beast when the beast is hungry is almost impossible. Or, you can feed him, but you’re never going to satiate (thỏa mãn) him.

"Fall into disuse" nghĩa là gì?

Thời nay ai còn dùng chiếc tivi này nữa :D. Photo by Sven Scheuermeier on Unsplash

"Fall/come into disuse" -> nghĩa là ít sử dụng hay bị bỏ đi không dùng đến.

Ví dụ
Istanbul’s doomed sea taxis fall into disuse, disrepair.

The pump had fallen into disuse and the joints had rusted solid. Since my books had fallen into disuse, I sold them to a used-book dealer.

These new patterns have entered the grammar of English and need to be part of speakers’ linguistic knowledge if they wish to discuss Brexit although some of these patterns might well fall into disuse once we talk about Brexit less.

Only narcissistic (tự yêu mình) authoritarians attempt to lead by force. Everybody else knows that it will only be a matter of time before rules proclaimed (tuyên bố) for rules sake either fall into disuse or, just as likely, are overthrown (lật đổ).

"Up the wazoo" nghĩa là gì?

Spam mail nhận được trong 1 ngày. Photo courtesy: xsix

"Up the wazoo" có "wazoo" là từ lóng mang nghĩa hậu môn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là số lượng rất lớn và nhiều, có thể đến thừa thãi. Chưa rõ nguồn gốc của cụm từ này là từ đâu.

Ví dụ
For me, each time I got to enter one of those universes was a thrill because I'm a grown-up geek kid with a comic book collection up the wazoo. My childhood was comic books. So when I knew that I was going to be General Var Suthra in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic , that was a big bing!

It will need to get its e-commerce side up to speed, fix 600 or so physical stores that have been severely under-invested in even as the malls they are often located in are dying slow deaths, find a compelling (hấp dẫn) promotional strategy that doesn’t involve endless one-day sales and coupons up the wazoo and generally remake a 119-year-old company that has been stubbornly resistant to change from both within and without.

Pyotr stops at an intersection (giao lộ), perplexed (lúng túng): there’s a surveillance camera hanging above an ideal wall for painting. “Minsk (thủ đô Belarus) has them up the wazoo, there’s also a smart system for identifying people. However, it doesn’t work when you need it to,” the artist explains. When he himself was beaten up by a group of strangers in civilian clothes (following the appearance of street art featuring portraits of the riot police (OMON) commander and the former interior minister), he wasn’t able to obtain any video surveillance footage.

"Fall into disgrace" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Hedi Alija on Unsplash

"Fall into disgrace" -> nghĩa là bị thất sủng, bị giáng chức.

Ví dụ
Banned for life from cycling which he once dominated, Lance Armstrong is still featuring in sports shows, with ESPN's 30 for 30 documentary series the latest to highlight the Texan's rise and fall into disgrace.

Wirecard was once the toast of the German fintech scene, but had a spectacular (ngoạn mục) fall into disgrace in June after auditor EY refused to sign off on the company’s 2019 accounts due to a €1.9bn hole in its accounts. It soon after filed for insolvency (tình trạng không trả được nợ).

Harvey Weinstein’s fall into disgrace bears remarkable similarities to the scandal a few years ago in the U.K. about the British celebrity, Jimmy Savile.  These two cases have common features in terms of how sexually predatory (xâm hại) behaviour is perpetrated, perceived, and ultimately perpetuated.

"Fall into error" nghĩa là gì?

"Fall into error" -> nghĩa là cư xử không đứng đắn, sống sai; nghĩa khác là bị lầm lẫn.

Ví dụ
If we Christians say either of these things without the other, we fall into error.

When I went off to college, I fell into error—that's why I've moved back home now.

Right now you feel a lot of noise around you, but don't obsess because, in reality, they are not saying anything interesting. Sometimes it is preferable to keep quiet and not fall into error.

To put it simply, judges are not infallible (không thể sai được). It follows that the Supreme Court in so far as it "embodies" justice will never fail to deliver justice but in so far as it fails to do so it will definitely fall into error.

"Fall into disfavor" nghĩa là gì?

"Fall into disfavor" -> nghĩa là bị ghét bỏ, không được ủng hộ hay đánh giá cao.

Ví dụ
However, capital may well dry up once oil demand peaks and the sector continues to fall into disfavor among investors.

By the mid-2000s, coal had begun to fall into disfavor because of the contributions it made to climate change, and in 2006, New York state officials threatened to sue (kiện) RG&E because Russell Station's pollution-control equipment was out of date.

As the volatile (không ổn định) political situation in Iran shifts power dynamics (động lực) and corruption charges are increasingly leveled against Iranian officials, those who fall into disfavor with the regime (chế độ) may seek refuge (trốn tránh) elsewhere.

Police are still trying to establish a motive for Cornelio’s murder. Unless killers are caught and the brains are held accountable, permanently silencing journalists can become a bad habit. The same goes for shutting down media organizations who fall into disfavor with those in power.

"Fall into decay" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Phil Henry on Unsplash

"Fall into decay" = bị phân rã -> nghĩa là suy tàn, suy sụp (quốc gia, gia đình...) hay đổ nát, mục nát (nhà cửa...).

Ví dụ
Our neighbors want to see change; they will not just sit idle and watch children and families fall into decay. They are stepping up and doing something very real.

First and foremost, it is the recent birth of Erdoganocracy – Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has transformed into an institution rather than a political figure, an individual. This disastrous process has let Turkish political culture fall into decay.

For far too long, properties have been allowed to lay vacant (trống rỗng) and dilapidated (đổ nát) and allowed to fall into decay. The city needs to create a system to better incentivize (khích lệ) these property owners to make these assets serviceable.

Joseph David Delory wrote, "Renovation (cải tiến) is far better than the other option of letting it sit vacant and fall into decay and disrepair. From what I have read about the plans it seems like the developer intends to preserve the historic character of the building. I am all for it."

"Into cold storage" nghĩa là gì?

"Into cold storage" = vào kho lạnh -> nghĩa là bị gián đoạn, trì hoãn.

Ví dụ
UK property market (thị trường bất động sản) moves into cold storage, experts predict transactions could plunge (lao xuống) 50 per cent year-on-year, but what could it mean for house prices?

That means that the know-your-customer and anti-money-laundering (chống rửa tiền) rules required by exchange-hosted wallets would apply to anyone who wants to redeem fiat or take their cryptocurrency (tiền mật mã) into cold storage.

"We knew that they (Congress) were planning to push this bill (dự luật) into cold storage and we did not want that to happen. So we decided not to table it in the Council (Hội đồng). But it will be passed and implemented in the coming days," he insisted.

"Curse of knowledge bias" nghĩa là gì?

luôn tự soi mình... Photo by Gian Paolo Aliatis on Unsplash.

'Curse of knowledge bias' = định kiến trong tri thức -> nghĩa là không muốn tìm hiểu hay không thèm quan tâm đến những ý tưởng của người khác; nghĩ rằng người khác khó mà hiểu được hết những ý tưởng siêu việt của mình.

Ví dụ
To beat the curse of knowledge, the Heath brothers suggest using concrete language, as well as storytelling. A story format is a great way to illustrate something complex. As to why, the Heaths and other experts believe storytelling forces the use of understandable language and concepts.

Why is it so common for companies to message the post-purchase delighter, rather than the purchase driver? I believe it stems from the cognitive fallacy psychologists have dubbed the “curse of knowledge.” Often when we’re inside a company making a product, we are very familiar with the pain and solution. We are well past the stage of needing the purchase-driver message, so we become disproportionately immersed in the post-purchase delighters.

We may not know the term, but we all have been involved in situations where the curse of knowledge has been in play. A common occurrence is when C-level executives give speeches at a company-wide meeting. C-level jargon is typically very different from that of someone operating a piece of manufacturing equipment. If the executive is unaware of that, it won't be long before a majority of those in the audience will be zoned out due to a lack of understanding what the speech has to do with them.

"Bloom of youth" nghĩa là gì?

"Bloom of youth" = tuổi trẻ nở rộ -> nghĩa là giai đoạn đáng nhớ, thành công nhất của thời thanh niên, tuổi trẻ.

Ví dụ
But more I cannot wish you than to wish you find your love, your own true love this day, standing there, gazing (ngắm nhìn) at you, full of the bloom of youth - standing there, gazing at you with a sheep's eye and a licorice (cam thảo) tooth.

Their bodies may be weary (mệt lử) sometimes, and their faces may no longer carry the bloom of youth (though this is so often replaced, if only the world could see it, by something richer and more beautiful).

Sisters Who Make Waves tends to whet (khuấy động) this appetite of the audience. Rather than beautiful girls in the bloom of youth, the reality show, in a break from tradition, focuses on the charm of mature (trưởng thành) women.

Take for example the Greek God, Narcissus, a hunter, who was known for his beauty and was fixated (gắn bó) with his physical appearance. The story goes, one summer he got thirsty after hunting. In a water pool, he leaned over and saw himself in the bloom of youth.
