“Yesterday wouldn't be too soon” nghĩa là gì?

“Yesterday wouldn't be too soon” = ngày hôm qua đã không đến quá sớm như vậy -> nghĩa là điều đang được thảo luận cần diễn ra sớm nhất có thể, đặc biệt khi nó đã quá hạn.

Ví dụ
It's too late to do it now. So, yesterday wouldn't be too soon.

Can you please report the last project by this Friday, James? - Yesterday wouldn't be too soon.

No procrastination (sự chậm trễ, trì hoãn)! Do me a favor (giúp tôi) to finish this section. Yesterday wouldn't be too soon!

“You have to be cruel to be kind” nghĩa là gì?

“You have to be cruel to be kind” = phải tàn nhẫn mới là yêu thương -> nghĩa là bạn phải chia sẻ thẳng thắn để giúp ai đó nhận ra sự thật dù có thể khiến họ tổn thương.

Ví dụ
AS we're sure all parents will agree, sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind to your little ones - otherwise they'd watch TV all day, eat sweets for dinner and never go to bed of their own accord.

I am loathe to disagree with the advice from your mother, who sounds like a lovely woman and is right in many ways when she advises you to be kind, but I think you would be being kind in telling your friend to ease off. In the words of that old song, sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. You’re right: it’s going to be incredibly painful. But you will be doing your friend a huge favour if you are straight with her and tell her that if she does not calm down then you can no longer be friends with her. I would be very surprised if she has not been told this before. Her behaviour does sound very needy and a bit creepy at times. You won’t be the first person she has spooked and I suspect that you won’t be the last.

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. If you're Hakan Calhanoglu that means piling misery on the team you could well end up playing for at the end of the season. Calhanoglu has been a gem under Pioli and he is right to count himself as unfortunate in a number of games this season. The Turkish international is the most unlucky midfielder in Serie A with five efforts striking the post already this season. Serie A's MVP for the month of December, Calhanoglu is a man in form. The 26-year-old has six goals and nine assists in 21 games this season and Juventus will not need reminding of the Turkish star's ability - particularly from distance.

“You'll be the death of me” nghĩa là gì?

“You'll be the death of me” = (với tôi) coi như chết rồi -> nghĩa là tôi rất lộn ruột nếu thái độ cứ như thế.

Ví dụ
I can’t take it no more
Feels like I’ve been through the wars
And if you aren’t the goal
Then what are you at all
I’m falling slowly
So slowly no one can see
That I’m finding it hard to breathe
‘Cus you’ll be the death of me

Shamir summons grand psychedelic (ảo giác) drones — electric guitar haloed by sustained strings — and a stately beat for “I Wonder.” In his piercing high register, he sings suitably cosmic tidings: “I’ll be the earth with the disease/And you the human inside of me,” he promises. “And I wonder if you’ll be the death of me.” PARELES

I thought that we were meant to be
You took my heart and made it bleed
I gave you all my ecstasy (cực kỳ sung sướng, hạnh phúc)
I know you'll be the death of me
Left lipstick on my Hennessy
Felt like you took my soul from me
No way, I gave you all my ecstasy
I thought that you were meant for me
I know you'll be the death of me
Thought we were for eternity
You f---ed me up, both physically
And mentally, I can't believe

“Wouldn't want to be in shoes” nghĩa là gì?

“Wouldn't want to be in shoes” = không muốn xỏ đôi giày này -> nghĩa là ai đó đang hoặc sắp rơi vào tình cảnh khó khăn, tồi tệ hoặc không thể tránh được.

Ví dụ
We see a great risk that we wouldn't want to be in shoes for some time ahead.

This is an important win, we knew we wouldn't want to be in shoes and couldn't afford to lose any more games and it's been a very good week for us, winning three games, all away from home, and while playing some very good football

Let's bear this in mind eh, Mr Lewis in all his heart wasn't expecting to have a job the next day or even to be fired from one, he wasn't of the mind that people may want to hurt him or even to go somewhere for asylum (nơi ẩn nấp, nhà thương điên), or find somewhere to cool off. Listen he wasn't expecting nothing more than what he truly believe to have taken place - that the world would have ended. He's more hurting from this than even losing his job. He has taken a hard fall and is really in need of sympathy, in need to lifted up from caring hands. I certainly wouldn't want to be in shoes.

“Who shall remain nameless”

“Who shall remain nameless” = (thế) ai vẫn đang giấu tên đấy -> nghĩa là chỉ mặt ai đang giấu tên/ẩn danh trong cuộc tranh luận để không phải xấu hổ, rắc rối hoặc nhấn mạnh việc họ biết mình đã làm gì (sai).

Ví dụ
Headlines read that Americans are rebelling against wearing masks. Politicians, who shall remain nameless, appeared at public events without a mask, though citizens are threatened with arrest if observed without a mask.

Considering it's his character, Macchio takes the stance that the move was 100 percent legal, and Daniel is the rightful winner of the tournament. As the actor explains, "If you look at the tape, Jimmy, if you look at the tape, not only does the ref say 'point winner,' a win is a win, the opponent, who shall remain nameless at this point, literally arguably charged, ran into the kick. LaRusso had nothing to do but defend himself." It seems that in Macchio's eyes, the crane kick was a form of defense and therefore permitted by the tournament's rules.

The Supreme Court – the names of whose judges we cannot take – has laid down clear jurisprudence (án lệ) on this issue. “Membership” of a banned organisation – according to the Supreme Court – has to be understood as being limited to “active membership”, i.e., incitement to violence. If passive membership was also held to be a part of the UAPA, then its sections would be unconstitutionally broad, and would have to be struck down. Consequently, these judges – who shall remain nameless – have made clear that even at the prima facie stage – and notwithstanding Section 43(D)(5)’s high threshold for granting bail – it must at the very least be shown that if the prosecution’s (khởi tố, bên nguyên) case was taken to be true, it would have to meet the threshold for active membership.

"My spider-sense is tingling" nghĩa là gì?

"My spider-sense is tingling" = giác quan nhện đang kích thích -> nghĩa là trực giác mách bảo có điều không đúng; câu này bắt nguồn từ nhân vật Spider Man, giác quan nhện giúp cảnh báo anh về nguy hiểm sắp xảy ra.

Ví dụ
“My spider sense is tingling!” Thanks to Peter Parker, we all know that means impending (sắp xảy ra) danger. Inspired by Spider Man’s famous 6th sense, students at the University of Illinois have designed a suit that senses the near environment and informs the wearer of surrouding objects by gently pushing on his skin. The suit is called the “SpiderSense” and aims to give environmental feedback without sight.

But if I were a betting (cá cược) man — and I’m not, even though I like to act like it sometimes — I would bet this Patriots-Chiefs rematch, with a trip to Super Bowl LIII on the line, is going to be a classic. It just has all the makings for an epic AFC Championship Game, and I just have that feeling. My spider sense is tingling, so to speak.

This is Spider-man reporting, and I have to tell ya, my spider sense is tingling: there’s an orange Thanos on the lawn of the White House.

My spider sense is tingling I will keep a safe distance. Delusion of baby grandeur is a red flag.

"Fluff his lines" nghĩa là gì?

"Fluff (one's) lines" có fluff là điều sai lầm, ngớ ngẩn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là quên hay nói năng lộn xộn, như bài diễn thuyết hay lời thoại trong vở kịch.

Ví dụ
I feel so honoured to be asked to host. I'm hosting with Hugh Bonneville, who's incredibly calm, so hopefully he'll help me out if I fluff my lines or fall over.

Even the wedding day itself centred around invitees, the photographer, the reception, etc. My only memory of the ceremony vows was that I should not fluff my lines. I might as well have been reciting poetry.

Narendra Modi’s speech at the puja and brick-laying for the Ram mandir was a powerful one that hit all the notes you would have expected at an event that has been years in the making. The stage was set, and the consummate politician and speechmaker was never going to fluff his lines.

"Manic pixie dream boy" nghĩa là gì?

"Manic pixie dream boy" -> nghĩa là nhân vật nam đáng yêu, có tinh thần tự do, được dùng đơn độc làm người yêu hoặc phát triển cá nhân, thay đổi cuộc đời nữ chính (thường chán nản, vỡ mộng), thay vì là một nhân vật chính.

Ví dụ
Howl from "Howl's Moving Castle" — in all his manic pixie dream boy glory — pops up (xuất hiện) out of nowhere only to flip Sophie's world upside down, ultimately teaching her the importance of compassion (cảm thương) and putting others before herself. He was a flamboyant (lòe loẹt) and carefree spirit with a lost and gentle soul that needs to be protected.

Riley lives in TropeTown, where everyone plays stock roles in novels. Riley, a Manic Pixie Dream Boy, is sent to group therapy (điều trị) after going off-script. Riley knows that breaking the rules again could get him terminated (loại bỏ), yet he feels there must be more to life than recycling the same clichés (câu rập khuôn) for readers' entertainment.

I read Jennifer Niven’s All the Bright Places a couple of years ago, and it was a bit like playing knock-off John Green bingo, right down to the manic-pixie dream girl, only here, it’s a manic-pixie dream boy and he is literally manic (vui buồn thất thường), as the character played by Justice Smith in the movie suffers from undiagnosed (không được chẩn đoán) manic depression.

Now, his behaviour (hành động) is familiar to anyone with even a cursory (vội vã) knowledge of romantic comedies. He’s a cross between a Manic Pixie Dream Boy and what’s been more commonly viewed as a glorified stalker by critics who have started to revisit what we’ve grown to accept as normal in Hollywood’s idea of courting.

"Saintly black character" nghĩa là gì?

"Saintly black character" = nhân vật da đen thánh thiện -> nghĩa là nhân vật da đen xuất hiện đơn độc trong phim ảnh hoặc tác phẩm văn học để làm nổi bật các nhân vật da trắng khác, thường thông qua việc dùng sức mạnh ma thuật.

Ví dụ
The term, first attributed (tượng trưng) to director Spike Lee in the early-2000s, refers to films that usually feature a lone, saintly black character in a predominately (chiếm ưu thế) white universe who, either through supernatural or just plain saccharine means, only serve to enrich the lives of white characters.

Once again, he has a saintly black character (Murphy, as the titular Mr. Church) devoting (cống hiến) decades of his life to caring for a prickly, spoiled, privileged white character. When the film begins in the 1970s, Charlotte is a 10-year-old brat who's shocked and offended when her mother (Natascha McElhone) brings home a chef, as a gift from a dead lover.

However, there are many issues with the presentation. Like, for example, the fact that she's calling herself "Kobe Perry" even after those accusations (buộc tội) of cultural appropriation (chiếm đoạt làm riêng). And, on top of that, Minaj's game-changing halftime performance, which makes her the saving grace of the both the game and video, also falls into the Magical N*gro trap. (The offensive stereotype, as defined by Salon, casts a "saintly" black character as a disconnected, mystical mentor to a white hero, who then goes on to be the one to save the day.)
