"Dereliction of duty" nghĩa là gì?

"Dereliction of duty" có dereliction là bỏ rơi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cố ý trốn tránh, không thực hiện nhiệm vụ được giao.

Ví dụ
From where I stand, given that we’re in the middle of a pandemic, I felt like it would be a dereliction of my duty and my commitment (cam kết) to the agency and to the people that we serve, to leave my post and without ensuring a smooth transition to the Biden administration.

Jeff McCausland Trump's Capitol failings define (định nghĩa) 'dereliction of duty.' No wonder Pelosi asked about nuclear codes. The past week has only reinforced (củng cố) his lack of fitness — a failing that could have catastrophic consequences.

Two Badaun police personnel have been booked for alleged dereliction of duty in the case of a 50-year-old woman’s gangrape (hiếp dâm tập thể) and murder. The woman was allegedly gang raped by three men, including a priest, in a Badaun temple, and later succumbed to her injuries.

The way this road is allowed to be rerouted is a shameful dereliction of duty by the respective road authorities (chính quyền). How could someone in authority allow the main contractor to provide such a bad road even if it is only for temporary (tạm thời) use?

"In single file" nghĩa là gì?

"In single file" -> nghĩa là xếp thẳng hàng nhau.

Ví dụ
In one of the photos, a group can be seen walking in single file along the narrow (hẹp) ledge. One of the teenagers was holding up his phone and filming. A police spokesman said officers from Sydney City Police Area Command were looking into the incident, which unfolded from about 2.30pm on Wednesday.

None of the boys spoke as they walked from the bus in single file, flanked by soldiers, into a government building. Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris, reporting from Katsina, said the boys walked barefoot (chân trần), some of them limping with blisters (bỏng rộp) on their feet.

From Friday, motorists were to be safely convoyed (hộ tống) in single file along the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful during daylight hours, 9am to 3.30pm, "ensuring traffic can be safely managed" past the steep roadside channels during daylight hours when conditions allow, says Bear.

As they entered the contemporary (hiện đại) Japanese restaurant, Kardashian and Thompson both wore masks, a fellow diner tells PEOPLE. Along with a third person, the pair came in single-file through the main entrance and headed to the glass-enclosed private dining room in the back of the restaurant, behind the chef’s kitchen. There was also a production crew of three people.

"Out of the loop" nghĩa là gì?

What did I do? 😔 Photo courtesy: Debbie

"Out of the loop" có loop là nhóm người -> cụm từ này nghĩa là 'ở ngoài nhóm', không được thông tin về hoạt động của nhóm; cho ra rìa.

Ví dụ
Remote work can contribute to “feeling out of the loop, because you’re missing the kinds of ad hoc (đặc biệt) conversations that tend to reassure us we’re in good standing,” Mr. Kramer said.

Age Scotland's chief executive, Brian Sloan, said: “While we welcome the introduction of the Protect Scotland app and the steps being taken to trace contact with the virus, many older people are at risk of being kept out of the loop due to technology barriers."

When asked why she felt “out of the loop,” Johansson mentioned that a big reason was Murray’s eccentric (lập dị) personality. He had a lot of energy and was prone to sudden shifts in his mood, which was the opposite of Johansson’s demeanor (thái độ) at the time. She also noted that she felt a bit isolated because everyone on set idolized Murray so much.

"Jump on a call" nghĩa là gì?

Ra là vậy! Photo courtesy: Irina Blok

"Jump on a call" = nhảy lên một cuộc gọi -> nghĩa là nói chuyện điện thoại.

Ví dụ
After the meeting, Trump spoke briefly with reporters but cut the session short to "jump on a phone call with Kim Jong-un".

Top spot Kent’s the Beach House is a solar-powered cabin that even requires you to bring your own drinking water, and was booking website Canopy & Stars’s fastest-selling place of all time when it went live this summer. It has no signal, no wifi, zero opportunities to ‘jump on a call’ and plentiful ways to embrace the world IRL (in-real-life), sea swims and all.

And when you consider the camera, the AI, and the sound improvements, it looks like high-end smartphones are on the cusp (trên đỉnh) of becoming the ideal videoconferencing (and collaboration) solution. Not only is it likely to be with you when you need to jump on a call, but it can better address the typical problems of doing so without a dedicated room.

"That's for damned sure" nghĩa là gì?

Khóa là chắc chắn không bao giờ chia tay. Photo by Tommy Lee Walker on Unsplash

"That's for damned sure" -> nghĩa là hoàn toàn chắc chắn, đó là sự thật.

Ví dụ
“He lived a life, that’s for damned sure,” Derek Trucks said Thursday. “I think he went out when he was ready and peacefully, and that’s a beautiful thing. We feel lucky that we had him.”

So while I have many criticisms (chỉ trích) of Vic Fangio, how he actually prepares and calls his defense is not one of them. This group was here to play and it is a crying shame that the offense and kicking units (because they are not special...that’s for damned sure) are so woefully (buồn rầu) behind them in execution, preparation, and ability.

“In some ways, I underestimated (đánh giá thấp) him,” Balderas said. “That’s something I have to learn from, too, and Giron is not a bad fighter. He’s a good fighter. I just don’t think he’s a better fighter than me, that’s for damned sure.

A lot more money was made than on fixing broken windows, that’s for damned sure, so it was fantastic for GDP and jobs, but very very bad for the national coffers (két bạc nhà nước).

"Lost without a cause" nghĩa là gì?

Ôi đi đường nào bây giờ?? Photo by Jordan Rowland on Unsplash

"Lost without a cause" = lạc lối vô cớ -> nghĩa là gặp khó khăn trong cuộc sống, thường trong trạng thái bơ vơ, vô định, không mục tiêu, mục đích.

Ví dụ
It has been a rollercoaster of a year. I missed my work and my clients (khách hàng) so much. It wasn’t a good time for me. I know lots of people enjoyed being off work but I felt lost without a cause.

When Emori approaches Nelson, he’s angry, but keeps up the façade (mặt tiền, mặt ngoài) of Emori’s identity. This is understandable behavior from him, as he’s being pulled in every which direction, lost without a cause upon the revelation (khám phá) of Russell’s true identity.

However, eagle-eyed Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) clocks Ben’s behaviour (hành động) and tells Jay not to get involved. The youngster finds himself lost without a cause and falls under Keanu’s wing and starts working for him.

I’m intrigued (hấp dẫn) by Werner posting up with a bunch of Stormtroopers like some post-WWII Nazis lost without a cause. Mandy himself is whatever so far but Pedro Pascal is forever gang in my book since Oberyn Martell. Time will tell, but right now, I’d much rather just rewatch Rogue One.

"Sent to the Tower" nghĩa là gì?

Nay đông thế nhở! Photo courtesy: Michel Gauthier

"Sent to the Tower" = đưa đến tòa tháp -> nghĩa là bỏ tù hoặc bị trừng phạt. Cụm từ này thường được sử dụng bởi người Anh vì "the Tower" ám chỉ Tower of London, một nhà tù nổi tiếng.

Ví dụ
Paul noted the song was comic rather than critical and noted how society has evolved (tiến triển) such that he could write a song like “Her Majesty.” “It’s just a cheeky little song. It sort of sums up how things have changed, doesn’t it? You can write songs like that and not get sent to the Tower.”

These are the very seats upon which Her Majesty would have parked her Royal behind. Assuming we’re not sent to the Tower for making such a comment, we’ll go on to say the interior was finished with a tan leather interior, acres of walnut veneer, vanity lights and picnic tables. No doubt the Queen was quite partial to (mê, thích) a snack on the way back from a private party.

He wrote the laws making the King, not the Pope, the head of the English Church, and declaring the English monasteries, with all their wealth, the property of the Crown. To achieve these epochal (trọng đại) changes, he had to impose his will on many people, and that is clear in Holbein’s painting. Cromwell is hard and heavy and dressed all in black. His mean little eyes peer forward, as if he were deciding whom to pillory (gông cổ), whom to send to the Tower.

"State of denial" nghĩa là gì?

Unacceptable. Photo by Francisco Moreno on Unsplash

"State of denial" -> nghĩa là trạng thái phủ nhận, không muốn tin điều gì là sự thật.

Ví dụ
Among the marchers (người diễu hành) was Hamid Niazi, who lost his wife, daughter and son in the crash. "I am not sure how I can explain that, I am still in a state of denial and disbelief. I can't believe that that happened to my family."

The Conservative government remained in a "state of denial" about the 14 million people living on the breadline (nghèo kiết xác), continuing its almost decade-long austerity (khắc khổ) measures despite the tragic social consequences.

Trump’s state of denial to the Biden-Harris election is a reality and cannot be undermined. His assertion (khẳng định) that the 2024 presidential elections will give him another opportunity to try his luck depends on his influence in the Republican Party (Đảng Cộng hòa). If he is again elected as president in 2024, he will be the second American president to win a non-consecutive (liên tục) term after Grover Cleveland who was America’s 22nd and 24th president.

"Life imitates art" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Kyle Head on Unsplash

Life imitates art! Visitors are locked in the Brazilian "Jurassic Park".

Welcome to Sharon Springs, a real life Schitt’s Creek in upstate New York. Life imitates art in this tiny, one-stoplight town which is home to a hotel, cafe, apothecary (nhà bán thuốc), and its own cast of colorful characters.

Life imitates art as hedge fund manager Jeff Ubben launches public-market impact fund.
The disaster played out almost exactly as it did in the dystopian future depicted in the famous novel. A chilling instance of life imitating art.

"Gales of laughter" nghĩa là gì?

Gì mà vui thế =)) Photo by Artem Beliaikin on Unsplash

"Gales of laughter" có gale là bùng nổ, nổ ra -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cười lớn tiếng, cười phá lên.

Ví dụ
We’re bringing in the new year with a series of virtual events to lift the spirits, induce gales of laughter and make us see the world anew. Featuring some of the brightest and funniest literary talents around, beloved personalities and bold artists with extraordinary (phi thường) stories to tell, this is a programme that promises to replenish (bổ sung) our sense of wonder. Opening and closing with poetry—from the exceptional T S Eliot Prize shortlist to a stellar digital edition Out-Spoken respectively—we’re bookending (liên kết) the series with electrifying performances to get the year off to a scintillating (sắc sảo) start.

But this was material conceived (quan niệm) in dialogue with an audience. There are no punchlines or conventional joke structures (cấu trúc), just an accumulation (tổng hợp) of airless nonsense that needs gales of laughter to keep it afloat.

It started last week, amid gales of laughter. ‘Sheemiss!’ my son cried from the stairs. I drew nearer to find my son pointing at me as he said one more time; ‘Sheeeeeemisssss’. He was calling me by my first name, in an adorably (dễ thương) sincere little act of rebellion (nổi loạn) that reduced him to dribbling, full-bellied hysterics (kích động).

In a Congressional hearing, Jim described an out-of-state academic hired by lobbyists (người vận động ở hành lang) to falsely dispute (lý sự) job-loss data as “an economic imbecile (khờ dại).” Afterward, facing Republicans who angrily demanded an apology, Jim was humble, stating, “You’re correct. I was wrong. He’s not an economic imbecile. He’s simply an imbecile.” We escaped amid gales of laughter.
