“Evil be to him who evil thinks” nghĩa là gì?

“Evil be to him who evil thinks” -> nghĩa là điều tồi tệ, xấu xa sẽ xảy ra với những người nghĩ ác.

Ví dụ
Today DMK is hunted by its own shadow, past deeds and the nemesis (sự báo ứng) like the proverbial saying "evil be to him who evil thinks".

‘Evil be to him who evil thinks’. The evil in this case must be in the eyes of the beholders who see what they want to see. The man in question is harming no one but himself by risking pneumonia (viêm phổi) through hypothermia (sự giảm nhiệt).

"The old lady quite liked me as her 'kosher' customer so she'd keep stuff on the side for me. One day I was in there by myself, going through the box of books she'd kept for me, when a plain-clothes policeman walked in. He pointed to me with hostility (sự thù địch, chống đối) and said 'What is he doing here?' I will never forget her face. She picked up a copy of Robert A Heinlein's 'Stranger in a Strange Land' and said 'Evil be to him who evil thinks'. The man grumbled and went."

“Can't be arsed” nghĩa là gì?

Không làm sao có ăn. Photo by Adrian Swancar

“Can't be arsed” = không thể ngu xuẩn hơn -> nghĩa là không sẵn lòng hoặc mất hứng để hoàn thành xong công việc.

Ví dụ
He's also requested that it doesn't snow this year as he can't be arsed with being awoken by the sound of children sledding outside.

I can’t be arsed to check the stats either but I think James Outram (Wirral) may have forgotten to take off all the other teams’ penalties when calculating penalty-less points. Unless he’s trying to establish what a league table would look like if every team except MU could be awarded penalties.

I can’t be arsed to debate and discuss VAR, it’s all a farce (trò hề), but what I will agree on, just this once, is that in real time, it did seem as though Robinson clamped Azpilicueta royally, so was it clear and obvious? On the surface, yes, but with a closer, indiscriminate (không phân biệt) look, it’s harsh (lỗ mãng, thô bỉ). There’s certainly a fine line between lawful and unlawful conduct in the modern game, and perhaps I’m simply not cut out for this protective, soft variation.

“Climbing the walls” = leo tường -> nghĩa là lo âu hoặc bực bội đến điên cuồng.

Ví dụ
I climb the walls for having to live in a building which could be a potential fire trap.

Oh, and the colors. Aren't they mesmerizing (mê hoặc)? There are colorful neon lights shooting out in every direction. It's got to be the coolest ride here! You are practically climbing the walls with excitement, and soon you'll be climbing the walls for real! So buy your tickets, and get in line, as TheStreet takes your inner child for a spin on this longtime carnival favorite, The Gravitron!

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said after the case: 'Its been a nightmare (ác mộng). I like Pink Floyd as much as the next man but not when it’s being played ten times a day until 4am. 'He also seemed to like his late night love ballads - I’ve lost track of the times I’ve heard Barry White and Marvin Gaye coming from the house. 'But it was mainly Pink Floyd, and I think whenever I hear their songs again I’ll be climbing the walls. 'We just hope this teaches him a lessons and we can get a good night's sleep from now on.'

“Fall prey to” nghĩa là gì?

“Fall prey to” = làm mồi -> nghĩa là nạn nhân của ai/điều gì.

Ví dụ
Deni Avdija fall prey to an anti-Semitic hoax (trò đánh lừa chủ nghĩa bài Do Thái)? Israeli basketball player shares a dubious (mơ hồ, thiếu minh bạch) fan-made photo on Instagram, sparking controversy (sự tranh luận, bàn cãi).

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first phase of the Covid-19 vaccination drive on Saturday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged everyone to not fall prey to rumours (tin đồn) or misinformation about the coronavirus vaccines and requested everyone to put their trust in the vaccine makers.

At the end of the day folks, it seems evident that what happened in Oregon in 2016 is now happening throughout the entire nation. The story had been written that “Trump Supporters storm the nation's Capital” before it even happened. They just needed a few names and photos to fill in the blanks and make it look legit. I believe that the next staged event is planned for Jan. 20, 2021. The media is promoting the belief that an armed protest will happen at every state capital on that day. If it does, it will be carried out by radicals (người có quan điểm cấp tiến/cực đoan) and compensated (được đền bù, bồi thường) actors, not patriots (nhà yêu nước). I warn each of you: do not fall prey to their orchestrated chaos (sự hỗn độn đã được dàn xếp).

“Fit to be tied” = bực đến nỗi buộc lại -> nghĩa là tức đến nỗi làm điều không suy nghĩ, hết sức giận dữ.

Ví dụ
It all has Jones fit to be tied. “We got to pay defense. We got to pay additional defense this year,” Jones acknowledged, but he is also resigned to the reality of the situation. “Let me say this: The less the cap, the bigger impact will limit us on being able to make contracts.”

After five months of sharing a bathroom, they were both glad when he could move back to his own place. The nasty weather didn’t stop them — freezing rain, black ice on the roads — and my sister was fit to be tied.

Governor Tim Walz and his counterparts in Wisconsin and Michigan are asking the federal government (chính phủ liên bang) to tell Pfizer where to send millions of COVID vaccine doses awaiting shipment -- or allow states to purchase the vaccines directly. Walz says he's "fit to be tied" after the Trump administration promised to release vaccine doses held in reserve for second shots, but the Washington Post reported the reserve was already exhausted. The governor said, "they knew when they told us they were gonna release 'em they didn't have any. Who does that?" The Trump administration’s initial policy was to hold back second doses to protect against manufacturing disruptions, but that approach shifted in recent weeks.

"Have to be moving along” nghĩa là gì?

Như chưa hề có cuộc chia ly. Photo by lucas Oliveira

“(I) have to be moving along” -> nghĩa là đến lúc tôi phải rời đi.

Ví dụ
I have to be moving along for the Supreme Court. It's going to be a historic day. And I couldn't be prouder to report this from the ground.

I can say “I have time for a 20 minute run before I have to be moving along for work so, however far I can get, I'm going out for 20 minutes.”.

Mizan, you had said, “Give me back 10 years of my life.” Now I say again and again, Mizan, I wanted to give you 20 years, not just 10. I have to be moving along, but Mizan, it is you who have left without a word! How can we bear this pain?

“If need be” -> nghĩa là nếu nó cần thiết.

Ví dụ
He questioned whether whoever had made the call to ban the book had actually read it, given they had only quoted the blurb (lời quảng cáo/giới thiệu sách) in their decision. Taylor told the Herald the decision was "absolutely ridiculous" and he was prepared to take the matter to court if need be.

Owusu-Koramoah is a chess piece. He can blitz. He can drop back in coverage. He can rack up tackles. He can drop into a nickel-safety spot if need be – and keep up with wide receivers in the slot. If he’s on the board at No. 25, *technically* he would, by all accounts, be “the best player available.”

"I have instructed the Inspector General of Police to direct officers, men, and women of the police service to ensure the rigorous enforcement of the law on mask-wearing at all public places and in public transport," said the president. He also urged police to "ensure the closure of all night clubs, pubs, cinemas, and beaches that may be operating in defiance (sự công khai kháng cự hoặc không tuân theo, sự thách thức) of the law," adding that "they will be assisted by other security agencies if need be."

“I'm not made of money” nghĩa là gì?

“I'm not made of money” = tôi không được tạo ra từ tiền -> nghĩa là tôi không có nhiều tiền, thường dùng để từ chối khi ai muốn mượn tiền mình hoặc mua thứ gì cho họ.

Ví dụ
"I mean, I'm not made of money. But I've always felt like we're just meant to take care of each other, meant to look after each other in this world.".

"So Pinteresting! I used this adhesive film to turn two cheap Ikea tables into less cheap-looking Ikea tables because I'm not made of money but I would like others to believe I am. Super simple to use and a ton of it for the price; I was really pleased overall. The pattern actually looks like marble, not a weird pixel-y repetitive pattern, so that's great as well." —Spencer House

I know that this year has been tough for a lot of folks, and my heart hurts for all of those affected. I've been doing my best to support small businesses around me throughout the year, whether it's ordering takeout and delivery from small mom 'n' pop shops (oh, so much delivery) and purchasing handmade goods from individuals on Etsy and other sites. Unfortunately, I'm not made of money (don't we all wish we were?), but I have been trying to help those struggling businesses and individuals however I can.

Tình huống tệ nhất cũng đã xảy ra. Photo by Max Bender

“It can't be helped” = không giúp ích gì cả -> nghĩa là không có gì cứu vãn được tình hình, tình huống không tránh được.

Ví dụ
While others seemed more stoic given the current COVID-19 situation, as one Twitter user tweeted “This isn't anyone's fault, it can't be helped.

With that being the case, due to how jam-packed the series is, there’s bound to be some passing details that fly right under the fans’ radars. It can’t be helped, being a provider of minutely detailed quality entertainment is, at the very least, better than the generic bunch. Having one or two questions about the series only makes it more fun.

Yet, we can’t just cover things by livestream alone. I’ve seen many reporters fall into this trap of relying off of feeds, even before COVID-19 caused everything to move to livestreams and video briefings. Sometimes it can’t be helped. But a lot is missed when you can’t be there in person, especially to corner a lawmaker after a contentious (có khả năng gây ra sự bất đồng) committee meeting.

“It'll be a cold day in hell” = sẽ là một ngày giá lạnh ở dưới địa ngục -> nghĩa là điều không bao giờ hoặc không có khả năng xảy ra.

Ví dụ
"It'll be a cold day in hell when I see that all of my police officers are sent someplace else and I'm supposed to just be ok with it," he said.

Media has been capped, holding back on truth and integrity more than ever before. The new reality as my dad would say, “it’ll be a cold day in hell” when known cabal hui o fire-hydrant leg-lifting competitors will pay the same fees or that, FBI Kenji and Obums ways and means will follow suit imminently (sắp xảy ra), OR especially now, since the Kealoha tip of the iceberg, “guilty stolen mailbox fraud” have been sentenced.

Denny Tubbs of Marion: "Face masks are simply PPE. Personal Protection Equipment by definition. They are intended to protect the wearer. They have incorrectly stated that these are now for the protection of others, which is totally false. It should be one's choice whether they feel it necessary to protect themselves or not. For me, it'll be a cold day in hell before I put one on because of this farce (trò hề). I have not gone back to work yet. If my employer states we must wear a mask, I will part company with them, period. I'm 67 years old, I have worked since I was 10, and have never collected unemployment, and have never had to look for a job."

"Low man on the totem pole" nghĩa là gì?

"Low man on the totem pole" -> nghĩa là người có vị trí thấp nhất, ít quan trọng nhất trong nhóm, tổ chức.

Ví dụ
Bowens was the low man on the totem pole in new offensive (tấn công) coordinator and quarterback coach Mike Yurcich’s position room, as he was behind Sean Clifford, Will Levis, and TaQuan Roberson.

I’d just signed on (lập giao kèo) with the Pack’s practice squad after having gone undrafted as a receiver out of Indiana State and being cut by the Lions in preseason. It’s my first day on the job, new guy in Green Bay, low man on the totem pole.

We sheepishly (ben xlenx) said we didn’t know, even though this was only Martin’s fourth season of varsity (đội bóng trường đại học) ball. So being the low man on the totem pole, I volunteered to do some research. The rest is a combination of history, trivia (chuyện tầm phào) and minutia (vụn vặt).

He wasn’t alone. Dr. Phil Hellman, who operates a small private practice in Rochester Hills, said he feels like "the low man on the totem pole" because he's not affiliated (liên kết) with a big hospital.

"Is in a flap" nghĩa là gì?

"Is in a flap" -> nghĩa là trong trạng thái hoảng loạn, điên cuồng.

Ví dụ
The reason why TMC is in a flap is also because although BJP winning 148 seats in the Assembly looks like a tall order, TMC losing 62 seats or more is in the realms of probability (có khả năng).

JP (Junior Pigeon) is a permanent resident at private stables in Minster owned by resident Katie Leverett after he was rescued and hand-reared by the animal-loving 33-year-old. But now, Katie says JP is in a flap because he needs some company (bạn đồng hành) and a search high and low has come up empty-handed.

Private science tutor (gia sư) Eric Woo is in a flap over what he sees as his right to rear a small number of chickens in his five-room Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat.Mr Woo, 48, is regarded among the poultry-rearing community as one of Singapore’s leading chicken rearers, and has a Facebook hobbyist page with 800 followers.

Shakespeare was right, so apologies for the dramatic licence taken from Antony and Cleopatra, but the PR industry is in a flap over the issue of ageism (phân biệt tuổi tác) in the industry and the lack of older practitioners in agencies.

"All in one piece" = tất cả nguyên vẹn -> nghĩa là hoàn toàn bình thường, không bị thương, hỏng hóc.

Ví dụ
“It’s been so long, I don't even remember this motorcycle,” he said. “From what I understand, it was found in Placerville.” He says he was surprised to find the motorcycle all in one piece.

"7th in stage and all in one piece! Bit of an underlying (hiện hữu) issue with the bike but all in all we are in a pretty good position with Stage 7 down, looking forward to another one..." There was also another fine performance from Australian KTM rookie Daniel Sanders, who finished fifth on the stage and now lies ninth overall.

The new main is around 5,000 feet long and must be pulled through, back to the island, all in one piece and all at one time. As you might guess (phỏng đoán), a pipe nearly a mile long is a little long to transport in one piece on a truck.

“Lose a step” nghĩa là gì?

“Lose a step” = trượt chân -> nghĩa là mất đi sự nhanh nhẹn, khéo léo (thường dùng trong thể thao).

Ví dụ
But when Gainwell and Coxie opted out, it was fair to wonder what would happen to the 2020 Tigers. They did lose a step compared to last season's AAC title team.

“I’m not going to add like a crazy amount of weight. It’s not going to make me lose a step. I think if I add weight and strength in the right areas, it will actually make me get faster.”

While most players lose a step after something like that, Wild coach Dean Evason wasn’t surprised that Fiala proved to be an exception (ngoại lệ) to the rule. They worked together back when Evason was the coach of the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League and Fiala when was a teenager trying to break into the league.

"Live on the smell of an oily rag” nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Zeyn Afuang on Unsplash

"Live on the smell of an oily rag” = sống nhờ mùi giẻ thấm dầu -> nghĩa là sống tiết kiệm, sống với số tiền ít ỏi.

Ví dụ
The guys we get in from Vanuatu, they arrive, they work hard, live on the smell of an oily rag, and save all their money to take home with them.

The grassfed cattle industry is a major component (hợp thành) of Australia’s $72.5 billion per year red meat industry, but is overseen by a representative and policy setting body that by comparison lives on the smell of an oily rag, with an operating budget of a just a couple of million dollars annually.

Clubs live on the smell of an oily rag face tough times as coronavirus hits community sport. Read the daily sport headlines – or at least those that exist in this time of competitive dormancy – and one could be excused for thinking the only athletes affected by the coronavirus-induced halt (tạm dừng lại) to activity are professionals.

But then after a few more weeks she said he wanted to meet me. I remember it was a really overcast (u ám) day and pouring (như trút nước) down with rain. But I thought, "No, I'm going to dress up in my glad rags and bring a bit of joy into the room."

We're personally in favour of the kind of energy that sees you wear in your glad rags to do the chores (việc nhà), because when going out for drinks and dinner is still a way off, dressing up for the catwalk from your door to your gate is worth the effort.

“It is going to be a time to put in your glad-rags and enjoy yourself with your nearest and dearest. “If you’re coupled up then this proves to be wonderful for affectionate (trìu mến) activities, while if you’re single then make the most of your heightened attraction!”. "Bring up the rear" nghĩa là gì?

"Bring up the rear" có rear là phía sau, ở cuối -> cụm từ này nghĩa là di chuyển cuối cùng trong đoàn.

Ví dụ
Trains and bows bring up the rear on red carpet.

We need one adult to lead the kids, and another to bring up the rear.

As always, to avoid confusing children, no other Santas — save stuffed Santas or fake Santas — will be allowed in any other entries so that the real Santa and Mrs. Claus, who bring up the rear of the parade, can ride in grand style on the chamber’s own parade float, saving the best for last.

As friends and family members across the border in Fermanagh, Tyrone and Antrim are already being vaccinated, Israel leads the global charge with an ambitious (tham vọng) and aggressive (công kích) roll out, we in Ireland and the EU generally are among the others in helping to bring up the rear. This is simply not good enough.

"Button up one's purse" = cài nút túi tiền -> nghĩa là keo kiệt, bủn xỉn.

Ví dụ
You should not button up your purse on healthcare.

More than three-quarters of mothers on maternity leave have had to button up their purse, dip into savings or ask family for help to cover income gap.

Earlier this week, Apple introduced a cheaper version of its smartwatch, its latest attempt to broaden the appeal of its trend-setting products while many consumers are forced to button up their purse during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Button up one's mouth" = cài nút ở miệng lại -> nghĩa là im thin thít.

Ví dụ
So all people that make these kinds of complaints, you should stay in your home and button up your mouth because you’re making complaints that are nonsensical.

Shortly after a Chinese journalist used a private message to contact a resident of Wuhan whose son had just died of Covid-19, his grieving mother was telephoned by the local authorities warning her to button up her mouth.

All three proposals have been floated before but have been too controversial (gây tranh cãi) to win traction (lực kéo) with state legislators (nhà lập pháp). The normally talkative Grigsby is lying low now, following orders from the Rispone campaign that he button up his mouth. It’s his mouth that got him into trouble.

"Have all my buttons" nghĩa là gì?

"Have all (one's) buttons" = có tất cả nút -> nghĩa là tinh thần ổn định, vững chắc.

Ví dụ
Grandma still has all her buttons in spite of her other health problems.

I used to be very self-conscious (tự ti) about what people thought of me. I graduated from school early, I married early, I divorced early. I had a baby quality to my face for a long time and that, combined with being soft-spoken—well, people would assume (cho rằng) that either I didn't have all my buttons or I wasn't very bright.

So there he’ll be in the Senate (Thượng viện), his old self-righteous (tự cao), waiting for the chance to take a principled stand against the White House. And maybe angling to take Trump on in 2020. It’s true that he’ll be 73 by then, but given the current lineup of presidential possibilities, that would make him a youth vote candidate. Who would ever have thought that Mitt Romney could look that good? But at least he has all his buttons.

"Have kissed the Blarney Stone" nghĩa là gì?

"Have kissed the Blarney Stone" = hôn khối đá Blarney -> nghĩa là có khả năng nói trôi chảy, lưu loát, rất thuyết phục, bắt tai, đi vào lòng người nghe.

Ví dụ
Lassies and Lads, if you have the opportunity to kiss this block of blue stone you may acquire (nhận láy) the gift of eloquence (tài hùng biện). Commonly known as "The Gift of Gab."  Take it from me, "That's no Blarney." That's why a gillion people, famous and regular folk, have kissed The Blarney Stone for centuries.  If you plan to give it a smooch, it's not that simple.  The stone is located 85 feet up on the wall of the castle.  To kiss it you have to bend backward while holding on to a railing.  They say it's a good idea that someone holds your ankles while you're doing this.

Autumn in Ireland is bliss (hạnh phúc). Overseas visitors have kissed the Blarney Stone, finished their pint of the black stuff and gone home, leaving the country roads quiet and the cities more laid-back (hello, off-season rates).

Blarney ranks (xếp hạng) as one of Ireland's top tourist attractions and those who have kissed the Blarney stone over the years include Winston Churchill, Laurel and Hardy, Prince, Michael Madsen and Billy Connolly.

"Tell its own tale" nghĩa là gì?

"Tell its own tale" = tự bản thân đã nói lên (bản chất) sự việc -> nghĩa là chứng tỏ, biểu lộ rõ ràng về việc đã xảy ra.

Ví dụ
With almost 5 months into the calendar year 2020, gold ETFs so far have returned over 22% annualised (hằng năm), well maintaining its momentum (sức đẩy) even now. Does this make for gold to be the Student of the year – 2? Well, time will tell its own tale. Until then, focus on asset allocation and don’t let greed drive you investment choices.

No disrespect, but the fact that Accrington could cement (thắt chặt) a play-off position if they win one or two of their games in hand could tell its own tale. Sunderland might come good dependent on who they appoint.

That would be a waste of time, as the movies have already told that story through flashback. Instead, it’s part prequel (cuốn phim) and part reboot of sorts, choosing to tell its own tale around the mythology of the curse than bring back familiar ghosts for another romp.

I do still worry about our seemingly ingrained (ăn sâu) insistence (cố nài) on passing the ball backwards at every opportunity when we can be so devastating passing forwards. Three times we have scored two in the first half this season, three points taken each time-seems to tell its own tale.
